Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste has become a major challenge for the conservation of the environment due to difficult degradation. For this reason, it is important to develop new recycling strategies for reusing this waste. In this work, the electrospinning technique was used to synthesize composite nanofibers of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), recycling PET (RPET) that was obtained from the chemical recycling of postconsumer PET with glycolysis and styrene (ST) as a crosslinking agent. The polymer solutions were analyzed by viscosity and frequency sweeping, while the composite nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), and nanoindentation to compare their properties. The PVP nanofibers presented an average diameter of 257 nm; the RPET/PVP and RPET/PVP/ST composite nanofibers had average diameters of 361 nm and 394 nm, respectively; and the modulus of elasticity and hardness of the RPET/PVP/ST composite nanofibers were 29 and 20 times larger, respectively, than those of the PVP nanofibers. Low-molecular-weight 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU) was used to modify bamboo strips catalyzed by maleic anhydride. In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to optimize the treatment conditions for DMDHEU modification of bamboo. Three selected parameters, DMDHEU concentration, curing temperature, and curing time, were further optimized using response surface methodology via the box behnken design (BBD). The equilibrium moisture content (EMC), water absorption (WA), anti-swelling efficiency (ASE), mechanical properties, and mold resistances to (Aspergillus niger V. Tiegh, Penicillium citrinum Thom, Trichoderma viride Pers. ex Fr., and Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat.) were evaluated as the dependent variables. The results show that the dimensional stability and mold resistance of bamboo were enhanced remarkably, and the modulus of rupture (MOR) of bamboo was decreased after DMDHEU modification, while the modulus of elasticity (MOE) changed slightly, and the parallel-to-grain compressive strength (CS) was increased. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to investigate the effect of modification on the bamboo microstructure and functional groups. In the context of SEM, TGA, and FTIR analyses, the thermal stability of bamboo modified with a medium or high concentration of DMDHEU was improved, the starch granules in the parenchyma cells of modified bamboo dissolved, and few resins were distributed in the lumens of treated bamboo. This study evaluates the effect of 1% to 5% NaOH treatments of cotton stalk particles on the chemical composition and physical and mechanical properties of particleboards produced with this material. Gas chromatography and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that the extractive, hemicellulose, and lignin content of the particles decreased during the alkali treatments, whereas the cellulose content increased. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated that the untreated particles exhibited higher thermal stability than the particles treated with NaOH. The decrease in thermal stability of alkali-treated particles seems to be due to degradation of chemical components. Alkali treatments raised water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling (TS) of the produced particleboards. Except for 1% NaOH, the treatments reduced the modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and internal bond (IB) strength in relation to the board made with untreated particles. The 1% NaOH treatment of cotton stalks was more effective and beneficial, leading to particleboards with satisfying MOE, MOR, and IB values that met the requirements for general-purpose particleboards used in dry conditions, as indicated by the TS-EN 312 (2012) standard. The new segmented poly(thiourethane-urethane)s (PTURs) based on 1,1′-methanediylbis(4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (HMDI, Desmodur W®), polycarbonate diol (PCD, Desmophen C2200) and (methanediyldibenzene-4,1-diyl)dimethanethiol were synthesized by one-step melt polyaddition method. The obtained PTURs, with a content of 30–60 wt% of the hard segments (HS), were tested in which the influence of changes in the HS content on their properties was determined. The polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermal analysis (DSC, TGA) and thermomechanical analysis (DMTA). Additionally, tensile strength, optical (refractive index, UV-VIS and color) and surface properties of the obtained polymers (contact angle and surface free energy) and adhesion to copper were examined. FTIR analysis verified the supposed structure of the polymers obtained and showed a complete conversion of the isocyanate groups. TGA analysis confirmed the relatively good thermal stability of the polymers. On the other hand, after performing the DSC analysis, it was possible to state that the obtained materials were partially or completely amorphous, and the microphase separation decreased with increasing HS content in the polymer. Similar observations were made from the DMTA data. In addition, the hardness, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, storage modulus, adhesion to copper, refractive index and total free surface energy increased with increasing HS content in the polymer. Significant effects of organoclay and poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde)- methylated (PMFM) impregnation on the mechanical, morphological, and thermal characteristics of raw pulai wood were investigated in this work. The material’s modulus of elasticity (MOE) as well as the maximum compression force (MCF) of the impregnated organoclay/PMFM pulai wood samples were optimized using a designed experiment. The MOE and MCF models had R2 values of 0.9228 and 0.8340, respectively. After the impregnation of organoclay/PMFM pulai wood samples, the MOE and MCF increased considerably, indicating that the pulai wood's mechanical characteristics had improved. The compositional analysis verified the polymerization and dispersion of organoclay and PMFM. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, reduction in the hydroxyl groups was detected. The impregnated organoclay/PMFM pulai wood samples had successfully filled the pores and cell cavities, as seen by scanning electron microscopy. The thermal stability of the impregnated organoclay/PMFM pulai wood samples was better than that of the raw pulai wood, with a higher glass transition temperature as determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The thermogravimetric study revealed that the impregnated organoclay/PMFM pulai wood samples had higher decomposition temperatures than the raw pulai wood sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Four types of treated wood (TW) were prepared by the impregnation of solid wood each with a solution of 4-methyl catechol at pH 8, a solution of 4-methyl catechol at pH 9, a solution of 4-methyl catechol at pH 10, and a solution of 4-methyl catechol at pH 11. These TW were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopic, 3-point bending, freefree- vibration, and thermo-gravimetric analysis. FT-IR result showed that TW had more than one carbonyl absorbance band between 1745 and 1690 cm-1, while raw wood had only one carbonyl absorbance band in this regard. TW at pH levels of eight and nine showed higher crystallinity index (CIXRD) than that of raw wood. The SEM micrograph of TW at pH 8 had a smoother surface compared with other treated wood and raw wood. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), and modulus of rupture (MOR) of TW at pH 8 and pH 9 significantly increased. The raw wood exhibited a higher water uptake compared with the TW. The utilization of forestry waste resources in the production of polyurethane resins is a promising green alternative to the use of unsustainable resources. Liquefaction of wood-based biomass gives polyols with properties depending on the reagents used. In this article, the liquefaction of forestry wastes, including sawdust, in solvents such as glycerol and polyethylene glycol was investigated. The liquefaction process was carried out at temperatures of 120, 150, and 170 °C. The resulting bio-polyols were analyzed for process efficiency, hydroxyl number, water content, viscosity, and structural features using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The optimum liquefaction temperature was 150 °C and the time of 6 h. Comprehensive analysis of polyol properties shows high biomass conversion and hydroxyl number in the range of 238–815 mg KOH/g. This may indicate that bio-polyols may be used as a potential substitute for petrochemical polyols. During polyurethane synthesis, materials with more than 80 wt% of bio-polyol were obtained. The materials were obtained by a one-step method by hot-pressing for 15 min at 100 °C and a pressure of 5 MPa with an NCO:OH ratio of 1:1 and 1.2:1. Wood protection through chemical modification has received increasing interest over the last decades due to the environmental issues related to conventional biocides or protecting products. Consequently, a wide range of new treatments are developed in laboratories, which are later scaled up in the industrial environment. The main goal of modifying wood for indoor–outdoor application is to change its hydrophilic character, which in turn improves the intrinsic properties of the material and its durability against external factors. Wood can be esterified through its hydroxyl groups to obtain a hydrophobic and photo-stable material. Chemical modifications of Pinus radiata D. Don wood using hexanoyl chloride (P6), dodecanoyl chloride (P12), and stearoyl chloride (P18) were carried out at different concentrations. Esterification was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) technique combined with a discriminatory analysis. Weight percent gain was associated with the number of carbons of the aliphatic chain of the fatty acid (P6 > P12 > P18). Moreover, an increase of wood density as a consequence of modification treatments was observed. A substantial improvement of the hydrophobicity of wood was observed by dynamic contact angle measurements. In addition, the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on color changes was reduced with the treatments. Furthermore, the P6 treatment presented acceptable values of modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR), being suitable for similar mechanical uses as non-treated pinewood. Photocatalytic cementitious materials are used in the exterior of the buildings and infrastructure for self-cleaning and air-purifying purposes. These materials are exposed to the aggressive exposure conditions like acid rain, runoff water and are subjected to the deterioration due to the leaching of calcium. The knowledge of leaching attack upon photocatalytic cementitious materials after the addition of nano-materials is necessary. In the current study, the influence of nano-silica addition on the leaching attack upon photocatalytic cement mortars was thoroughly investigated. For this purpose, photocatalytic mortars were made by adding 3% TiO2 and variable amount (0–2%) of nano-silica. Accelerated leaching environment was created by immersing mortars in 6 M ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) solution. The progressive development of the leaching depth in mortars was measured. The loss of hardened properties was monitored by evaluating the compressive strength, flexural strength, porosity, and dynamic modulus of elasticity. X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy tests were conducted to know the microstructural deteriorations. Results indicated that the leaching attack induced mechanical and microstructural damages in the mortars, but the addition of nano-silica decreased mechanical and microstructural damages in the photocatalytic mortars and increased the resistance of photocatalytic mortars to leaching attack.
