Roll and lateral dynamics of a vehicle are heavily coupled together, the increase of roll stability does not necessarily result in the improvement of stability in the lateral plane, but the decrease in lateral stability possibly contributes to instability in the roll plane. To address this challenge, a comprehensive tune of coupled roll and lateral dynamics for a vehicle fitted with hydraulically interconnected suspension system is presented in this paper. A typical sport utility vehicle is selected and modeled with 10 degrees of freedom to conduct the dynamic simulation. Also, the fluid equations of the proposed hydraulically interconnected suspension system with nonlinear damper model are derived and incorporated into the vehicle model. Furthermore, the integrated model is validated by the field test. The simulation is also conducted to assess and compare the vehicle roll and lateral dynamic performances under fishhook maneuver. The results show that the well-tuned hydraulically interconnected suspension can suppress its body motion in roll plane, enhance the yaw rate tracking ability, minimize the sideslip angle at the center of gravity, and also decrease the slip angles for tires. Last, the parameter sensitivity analysis for a strongly nonlinear hydraulically interconnected suspension system illustrates how individual hydraulically interconnected suspension parameters (roll stiffness, roll stiffness nonlinearity, roll stiffness distribution ratio, and damping ratio) contribute to different dynamic aspects of a vehicle. The results indicate that, by controlling hydraulically interconnected suspension key parameters, the vehicle dynamic performance can be effectively controlled in both roll and lateral planes. The parameter sensitivity analysis findings have pointed out the direction for controller design and laid the foundation for active hydraulically interconnected suspension system development in the future. This paper presents the design of a central feedforward control for the two chassis control systems rear-wheel steering (RWS) and torque vectoring (TV) which have related areas of intervention in lateral dynamics. A control strategy is presented in order to follow desired target values consisting of yaw acceleration and sideslip angle velocity. Central attention is given to the use of additional tyre information with the aim of enhancing vehicle handling and stability. With the knowledge of the mounted tyre type, an adaption law for the desired target values is derived. Although the focus is based on the usage of new tyre information, this modelling approach basically has the potential to reduce the need for coordination among the two systems RWS and TV, exploiting the synergies between both of them. Starting from an extended single-track model an exact Input–output linearisation method is used to design the feedforward control. This is followed by a proof of stability for the external and the internal dynamics of the controller. For the subsequent investigation, in a preliminary step, real-world in vehicle tests are carried out under varying tyre types with a wide spreading of characteristics. This serves as a basis to identify the most important tyre parameters for the controller and to derive the target goals. Finally, the controller is implemented in a 14-DOF non-linear entire vehicle model in Matlab/Simulink, that serves for simulations with a virtual vehicle plant. The performance of the presented feedforward control is assessed by specified objective criteria for steady-state and transient open-loop manoeuvres in lateral dynamics. These criteria are used to investigate the effectiveness of the control design with the aim to achieve the defined target motion. This paper studies neural network models of vehicle dynamics. We consider both models with a generic layer architecture and models with specialised topologies that hard-wire physics principles. Network pre-wiring is limited to universal laws; hence it does not limit the network modelling abilities on one side but allows more robust and interpretable models on the other side. Four different network types (with and without pre-wired structure, recursive and non-recursive) are compared for the longitudinal dynamics of a car with gears and two controls (brake and engine). This work considers the problem of position and position-uncertainty estimation for atonomous vehicles during power black-out, where it cannot be assumed that any position data is accessible. To tackle this problem, the position estimation will instead be performed using power separated and independent measurement devices, including one inertial 6 Degrees of Freedom (DOF) measurement unit, four angular wheel speed sensors and one pinion angle sensor. The measurement unit's sensors are initially characterized in order to understand conceptual limitations of the inertial navigation and also to be used in a filtering process. Measurement models are then fused together with vehicle dynamics process models using the architecture of an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). Two different EKF filter concepts are developed to estimate the vehicle position during a safe stop; one simpler filter for smooth manoeuvres and a complex filter for aggressive manoeuvres. Both filter designs are tested and evaluated with data gathered from an experimental vehicle for selected manoeuvres of developed safe-stop scenarios. The experimental results from a set of use-case manoeuvres show a trend where the size of the position estimation errors significantly grows above an initial vehicle speed of 70 km/h. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) offer improved fuel efficiency compared to conventional vehicles at the expense of adding complexity and at times, reduced total power. As a result, HEV generally lack the dynamic performance that customers enjoy. To address this issue, the paper presents a HEV with electric All-Wheel-Drive capabilities via the use of torque vectoring electric rear axle drive (TVeRAD) to power the rear axle. The addition of TVeRAD to a front wheel drive HEV improves the total power output. To improve the handling characteristics of the vehicle, the TVeRAD provides torque vectoring at the rear axle. A bond graph model of the drivetrain is developed and used in co-simulation with CarSim. The paper proposes a control system which utilises control allocation to optimise tyre forces. The proposed control system is tested in the simulation environment with a high fidelity CarSim vehicle model. Simulation results show the control system is able to maximise vehicle longitudinal performance while avoiding tyre saturation on low mu surfaces. More importantly, the control system is able to track the desired yaw moment request on a high speed double lane change manoeuvre through the use of the TVeRAD to improve the handling characteristic of the vehicle. In this research, recognition sensors are used for tracking the outside world along with a steering assistance model that reduces delays inherent in the human cognition, decision, and operation decision-making chain, thereby minimizing vehicle behavior delay with respect to the vehicle position and steering wheel angle based on a read-ahead effect. Additionally, the creation of an emergency avoidance assistance program based on obstacle detection and a cornering assistance program based on white line detection are reported. The effectiveness of these programs using a driving simulator and a model vehicle was investigated. It was found that when the emergency avoidance assist provided by the obstacle detection program was used, the automatic override function was capable of successfully intervening to prevent accidents in situations where it determined that manual steering operations by the driver would be too late. Additionally, in experiments involving cornering assistance by white line detection, it is found that smoother steering around curves was facilitated by the system's ability to set up a optimal approach earlier than could be expected by the curve recognition processes used by human drivers, and that the vehicle was more stable at the curve exit. This paper studies a control architecture for vehicle lateral dynamics based on the execution of optimal trajectories via feedforward inverse model control. The focus here is on assessing the robustness of this arrangement when the vehicle real forward dynamics is not identically cancelled by the inverse model due to model approximations and parameter uncertainties. The trajectories that are considered are analytic solutions of the minimum square jerk optimal control problem for a simplified kinematic vehicle model in curvilinear coordinates. Various hypotheses are made concerning the mismatch between the inverse model and the actual forward dynamics of the vehicle. Closed-loop stability analysis shows that the studied control scheme guarantees asymptotic stability of both the nominal and the perturbed kinematic model with significant robustness margins. In addition to the theoretical robustness analysis, the same control scheme is validated in simulation using the industry-standard software for virtual vehicle testing IPG CarMaker. In this paper, a coordinated control strategy is proposed to provide an effective improvement in handling stability of the vehicle, safety, and comfortable ride for passengers. This control strategy is based on the coordination among active steering, differential braking, and active suspension systems. Two families of controllers are used for this purpose, which are the high order sliding mode and the backstepping controllers. The control strategy was tested on a full nonlinear vehicle model in the environment of MATLAB/Simulink. Rollover avoidance and yaw stability control constraints have been considered. The control system mainly focuses on yaw stability control. When rollover risk is detected, the proposed strategy controls the roll dynamics to decrease rollover propensity. Simulation results for two different critical driving scenarios, the first one is a double lane change and the other one is a J-turn manoeuvre, show the effectiveness of the coordination strategy in stabilising the vehicle, enhancing handling and reducing rollover propensity. This paper proposes a novel 2-step global sensitivity analysis algorithm to provide an in-depth sensitivity analysis of the vehicle parameters on the system responses. A 9 degree-of-freedom nonlinear vertical–lateral coupled vehicle model is developed, and 12 parameters along with 7 system responses are selected for the sensitivity analysis. In order to reduce the computational effort, the proposed 2-step algorithm calculates the elementary effects and selects 7 influential parameters from these 12, and then uses the Sobol' method to obtain the global sensitivity indexes of these influential parameters. An unscented Kalman filter is finally designed to show the effect and importance of the selected sensitive parameters on the observation accuracy. Simulations with different vehicle types, velocities and tyre models have verified that the proposed algorithm can accurately describe the relationship between the vehicle parameters and system responses, which is of directive significance to improve vehicle controller and observer performances. This study deals with a new integrated control sys-tem using active torque vectoring (ATV) and electronic stability control (ESC) for enhancement of vehicle directional stability and steerability. In this system, the stabilizing yaw moment is calculated using a novel constrained nonlinear controller with both input and state constraints. The proposed controller is designed using the prediction of continuous nonlinear vehicle model. It guarantees the vehicle directional stability by restricting the side slip angle in the admissible range when the yaw rate tracks its desired response for improved steerability. The calculated yaw moment is generated as driving and braking forces by integrated ATV and ESC systems. According to the integration policy, the required yaw moment is initially generated by ATV in the rear wheels to keep the vehicle driving performance. Because of limitation of ATV, if more yaw moment is required, the ESC system applies asymmetric braking pressure to front wheels to compensate the scarcity of ATV. By the proposed strategy, the small reduction of vehicle velocity is achieved and the vehicle drivability performance is maintained. In order to determine the full capacity of ATV, the active differential dynamics is considered in this paper. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the efficiency of proposed constrained controller in comparing with the unconstrained controller and a conventional nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) developed in the recent papers using 14-DOF vehicle model. Chassis integrated control can significantly improve vehicle handling stability and comfort. Because of the complexity of the problem, it has attracted significant research attention. We built a vehicle nonlinear dynamic model with multi‐degree freedom, including body movement, wheel movement, and electronically controlled hydraulic power steering system. We compared the magic formula tire model, Dugoff tire model, brush tire model, and LuGre dynamic friction tire model and steady model. The precision of the model was verified by a comparison between simulation results and the real vehicle test results. Then, based on the vehicle dynamics model, an AFS (active front steering) controller was designed based on sliding mode variable structure control, and an AFS and ESP (electronic stability program) integrated coordination controller was proposed. Finally, based on the nonlinear tire model and multi‐DOF (degree of freedom) vehicle model, sinusoidal and step steering angle input simulation analysis was proposed on different road friction coefficients. The results show that the vehicle has better response characteristics with coordinated control strategy when compared with AFS and ESP only control. This paper considers the problem of collision avoidance for road vehicles, operating at the limits of friction. A two-level modelling and control methodology is proposed, with the upper level using a friction-limited particle model for motion planning, and the lower level using a nonlinear 3DOF model for optimal control allocation. Motion planning adopts a two-phase approach: the first phase is to avoid the obstacle, the second is to recover lane keeping with minimal additional lateral deviation. This methodology differs from the more standard approach of path-planning/path-following, as there is no explicit path reference used; the control reference is a target acceleration vector which simultaneously induces changes in direction and speed. The lower level control distributes vehicle targets to the brake and steer actuators via a new and efficient method, the Modified Hamiltonian Algorithm (MHA). MHA balances CG acceleration targets with yaw moment tracking to preserve lateral stability. Robust estimation of vehicle sideslip angle is essential for stability control applications. However, the direct measurement of sideslip angle is expensive for production vehicles. This paper presents a novel sideslip estimation algorithm which relies only on sensors available on passenger and commercial vehicles. The proposed method uses both kinematics and dynamics vehicle models to construct extended Kalman filter observers. The estimate relies on the results provided from the dynamics model observer where the tire cornering stiffness parameters are updated using the information provided from the kinematics model observer. The stability property of the proposed algorithm is discussed and proven. Finally, multiple experimental tests are conducted to verify its performance in practice. The results show that the proposed approach provides smooth and accurate sideslip angle estimation. Due to the strong nonlinearity, coupling characteristics, external disturbance, and complex driving conditions, it is difficult to establish an accurate mathematical model for the autonomous ground vehicle (AGV). This requires the AGV path following controller to have strong robustness. In this paper, a robust AGV path following control strategy that is based on nonsingular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) and active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) is presented. First, the complex path following problem is simplified to a simple yaw angle tracking problem by constructing a desired yaw angle function that satisfies that the displacement deviation of AGV converges to zero when the actual yaw angle approaches the desired yaw angle. Second, an NTSM-ADRC controller is designed for the system, which uses the extended state observer to estimate and compensate the unmodeled dynamics and unknown external perturbations of the system in real time. In order to improve response characteristics of the controller, the nonlinear error feedback control law is designed by combining the NTSM and exponential approximation law. In contrast to the existing work, the improved controller can use the simple two-degree-of-freedom linear vehicle dynamic model to provide good performance in a range of driving conditions. Finally, the CarSim–Simulink simulation results of typical conditions show that the proposed control strategy can make the AGV follow the reference path quickly and accurately while ensuring the stability of the vehicle and has strong robustness. This study presents a novel approach in vehicle modeling to provide a unified reconfigurable vehicle dynamics model. The introduced vehicle model is applicable for analysis, design, and control of a wide variety of vehicles and can be reconfigured for four- and three-wheeled vehicles. Active steering, differential braking, torque vectoring, and active camber are included in the model as the actuators. The proposed set of model equations is reconfigurable and can be adjusted for various vehicles without need for new derivation. Two matrices are defined called the corner reconfiguration matrix and actuator reconfiguration matrix that are responsible for wheel and actuator configurations of the vehicle, respectively. The model can be reconfigured by setting the diagonal elements of these two matrices. The proposed reconfigurable model is compared with different high-fidelity vehicle models in CarSim for validation. Simulation results show that four-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicle models can all be drawn from the single unified reconfigurable model. Semi-recursive formulations and their various versions have made it possible to describe complex nonlinear systems such as vehicles precisely while still solving the relevant equations of motion in real time. An optimal combination of an efficient multibody formulation and a fast numerical time integration scheme are needed to accurately simulate complex systems in real time. This paper introduces a double-step semi-recursive multibody formulation and analyzes its performance with high-order numerical time-integration algorithms for real-time simulation. The Runge-Kutta, Gill, Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg, Adams-Bashforth-Moulton, and adaptive time step Runge-Kutta numerical methods are explained and compared. Results are verified against a commercial multibody software solution. A 15-degree-of-freedom sedan vehicle model serves as a benchmark to verify the theoretical results. The results highlight the differences between the numerical algorithms and suggest appropriate approaches for a nonlinear vehicle dynamics model, particularly for cases where simulation times are long. This paper proposes a robust road profile estimation method and vehicle parameter identification method through an optimization with an objective function and constraint conditions on estimated profiles. The methods require only vehicle response measurements, enabling easy and inexpensive, yet effective, road condition monitoring through the automated processing of smartphone data. A half-car (HC) model, representing both bouncing and pitching motions, is employed for the profile estimation. The road profiles at the front and rear tire locations are included as state variables in the augmented state vector and are estimated by combining the augmented Kalman filter (AKF), Robbins–Monro (RM) algorithm, and Rauch–Tung–Striebel (RTS) smoothing. The two independent state variables, however, correspond to a single physical profile, while their distance coordinates differ by the wheelbase. Therefore, the vehicle parameters are optimized through the minimization of the difference between the identified road profiles at the front and rear tire locations using a genetic algorithm. Three objective functions and three constraint conditions are proposed to automatically select the best vehicle parameters. With this HC model, the road profile is subsequently estimated by combining the AKF, RM, and RTS methods. Through numerical simulations, the accuracy of the profile estimation and validity of the parameter identification are clarified. The influences of different drive speeds and difference between the left and the right profiles are numerically investigated. Drive tests with three different vehicles and a reference laser profiler show that the algorithm can automatically compensate for differences among vehicles with different drive speeds and estimate profiles accurately. Many challenges still need to be overcome in the context of autonomous vehicles. These vehicles would be over-actuated and are expected to perform coupled maneuvers. In this paper, we first discuss the development of a global coupled vehicle model, and then we outline the control strategy that we believe should be applied in the context of over-actuated vehicles. A gain-scheduled H ∞ controller and an optimization-based Control Allocation algorithms are proposed. High-fidelity co-simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed control logic and the new possibilities that could offer. This paper presents the development of an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) platform, especially the derivation of the vehicle's simulation model and its control method to overcome strong sea current. The platform is designed to have a flattened ellipsoidal exterior so as to minimize the hydrodynamic damping on the horizontal plane. Four horizontal thrusters with the identical specifications are symmetrically mounted on the horizontal plane, and each of them has the same thrust dynamics in both forward and reverse directions. In addition, there are three vertical thrusters used to handle the vehicle's roll, pitch and heave motions. Control strategy proposed in this paper to overcome strong current is that: maximizing the vectored horizontal thrust force against the sea current without or with the least of the vehicle's rotation on the horizontal plane. For the vehicle model, due to it being symmetric in all of three axes, the vehicle dynamics can be simplified and all of hydrodynamic coefficients are calculated through both of theoretical and empirically-derived formulas. Numerical simulations and experimental studies in both of the water tank and the circulating water channel are carried out to demonstrate the vehicle's capability of overcoming strong current.
