This is Volume 2 of the 25th Annual Proceedings of Selected Papers On the Practice of Educational Communications and Technology Presented at The National Convention of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology held in Dallas, Texas. This volume contains papers primarily dealing with instruction and training issues. Assistive technologies can in many ways facilitate the normal day-to-day lives of the disabled. As part of the ongoing research on assistive technologies at UTAS, Oman, that deals with augmenting and finding multimodal aspects of applications for the disabled, this paper aspires to investigate the role of deep learning in the field of image interpretation. Images are one of the most important mediums of conveying information among humans. Visually impaired persons especially with low cognitive abilities face insurmountable difficulties in understanding cues through images. This challenge is met by filtering words from image captions to facilitate understanding of the key notion conveyed by an image. This work utilizes the image captioning technique using deep learning frameworks such as convolution neural networks (CNN) and recurrent neural networks (RNN) to generate captions. These captions are fed to Rake, an NLP library that identifies keywords in the caption. The entire process is automated and uses transfer learning techniques for caption generation from images. This process is then further integrated with our main project, Finger Movement Multimodal Assistive System (FMAS) thereby incorporating text cues for interpreting images for the visually impaired. The objective of this research was to develop interactive multimedia for teaching speaking descriptive text to tenth-grader students of the culinary program. This research was conducted by using the research and development (R & D) approach adapted and modified from Borg and Gall. The procedures were conducting needs analysis, designing the program, validating to experts, revising, and producing the final product. The subjects of the research were thirty-five students in the culinary study program. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaires (a needs analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaires). The results of the data collection were analyzed quantitatively by using descriptive statistics. The result of this study was an interactive multimedia for teaching speaking descriptive texts to the tenth grader students in one of the vocational schools in Medan. The findings of this study showed that the interactive multimedia for teaching speaking descriptive texts has met good characteristics. It was indicated by the mean score of 93.3% for the content aspect, 93% for the media aspect, and 90% for the interactivity aspect based on expert judgments. The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Toolkit provides a wide range of online learning resources which are used in a mixture of self-study, blended, and classroom settings, primarily by students whose first language is not English. The Toolkit was developed by the eLanguages team at the University of Southampton and first licensed in 2004. This paper describes the most recent major refreshment project to improve both the functionality and appearance of the Toolkit. With the latest updates, we have aimed to increase the appeal of the resources to encourage greater autonomous usage by students, and to improve the ease with which staff can recommend and use Toolkit resources with their students. In this paper we introduce the key updates to the resources, including new functionalities and features, expanding the Toolkit with additional learning resources, a new visual approach, responsive feedback, accessibility upgrades, and strategies for increasing student usage. This paper details the motivation for and the main characteristics of "An Scéalaí" ('The Storyteller'), an intelligent Computer Assisted Language Learning (iCALL) platform for autonomous learning that integrates the four skills; writing, listening, speaking, and reading. A key feature is the incorporation of speech technology. Speech synthesis provides aural feedback which draws the learners' attention to errors in the text. Natural language prompts focus on common spelling and grammatical errors, further guiding the learners' ability to revise and self-correct written materials. While "An Scéalaí" is still in early stages of development, results of a feasibility study are positive and point towards directions for further development. Speech technology (automated speech recognition -- ASR and text-to-speech) offers great promise in the field of automated literacy and reading tutors for children. Students in third and fourth grades struggle with generating longer strings of text on a QWERTY keyboard because they still "hunt and peck" for AQ1 the letters and symbols rather than typing fluently. Thus, in addition to reading comprehension, students' performance is limited by their ability to translate their ideas into language and then transcribe those words into written text. Fourth grade students produce fewer words and recall less when typing or writing a response relative to speaking. Hence, speech technology is a crucial component in the development of iSTART-Early, an intelligent tutoring system that aims to provide online, automated reading strategy instruction and practice to improve deep comprehension for third and fourth graders. This paper discusses the key components and features of the speech technology incorporated into iSTART-Early. We also discuss some initial findings from pilot studies conducted with adults and youth for this ASR integrated tutoring system. Finally, we discuss considerations for future development of speech technology and integration with intelligent tutoring systems. [Paper published in: "ITS 2022." Large-scale, classroom-based experiments using adaptive instructional software pose somewhat unique challenges for experimental design and deployment. One reason for this is that adaptive software allows students to advance through the curriculum at different rates and encounter content at different times, meaning that content targeted for experimentation is often reached asynchronously by students within the same classroom. In addition, many pedagogical approaches subject to experimentation will require multiple "touch points" with students throughout a course. Nimble experimental methods necessitate that experiments are able to take place at any time during the school year, so a robust experimentation system may need to be aware of the student's educational experience(s) prior to the experiment, both to permit students to be excluded from the experiment (if desired by the researcher) if they have previously been taught the target content, and to ensure that the pedagogical approach taken during the experiment is consistent with that which has been experienced by the student before and after the experimental period. The UpGrade A/B testing platform (Ritter et al., 2020) is designed to help experimenters navigate these issues. This paper discusses several key design considerations for conducting digital experiments within adaptive educational software: ordering and sequencing, coordination of experimental activities, and exclusion criteria. Following this is an illustration of how these principles were applied in two recently-conducted large-scale experiments.

The use of technology is becoming widespread in science and technology classes due to its overwhelming benefits in learning. Yet many English language teachers lack knowledge of the existing technologies and the 'know-how' to use it in the classroom. In this paper, the researchers report the pilot study conducted to explore the effects of virtual reality (VR) headset, an inexpensive version of VR tools, onto the language learner's affective variables such as engagement, motivation, and independent learning. It also explores the effectiveness of VR headset onto the language learner's ability to learn vocabularies and to follow instructions. In a class of 55 students, only eleven students volunteered to participate. They were asked to wear a VR headset, identify the pictures aloud, and join the semi-structured individual interviews. Findings suggest very interesting results. Descriptive reports show very high mean scores of the learner's engagement (M = 4.63), motivation (M = 4.72), and independent learning (M = 4.63). The average mean score concerning their ability to follow instruction was 4.36. With regards to vocabulary test, the average mean score in the posttest was 2.73, higher than the average mean score of 1.18 in the pre-test. Despite the overwhelming benefits of using VR headset in the language class, this paper concludes with limitations as it only reports the results of the formative study.

The current study compared five free Text-To-Speech (TTS) systems, selected based on characteristics such as availability and capabilities. Tasks were completed by 37 English learners to evaluate these systems in terms of their comprehensibility, naturalness, and intelligibility. Text-To-Speech synthesizers (TTS) have raised the interest of researchers and teachers for their ability to enhance foreign/second language (L2) learning, particularly with regards to the development of pronunciation skills (Liakin, Cardoso, & Liakina, 2017). Despite some optimistic results, there are no studies that investigate TTS's pedagogical potential to enhance L2 Phonological Awareness (PA), especially in "foreign" language contexts, where access to rich aural input is limited in terms of both quantity and quality. The present study examines TTS's pedagogical potential as a tool to assist English L2 learners develop their PA, focusing on the morphophonological alternations that characterize regular past tense marking in English (past -ed). Results show that TTS contributed positively for the auditory perception and controlled (but not spontaneous) production of the targeted phenomenon. To efficiently create books and other instructional content from videos and further improve accessibility of our course content we needed to solve the scene detection (SD) problem for engineering educational content. We present the pedagogical applications of extracting video images for the purposes of digital book generation and other shareable resources, within the themes of accessibility, inclusive education, universal design for learning and how we solved this problem for engineering education lecture videos. Scene detection refers to the process of merging visually similar frames into a single video segment, and subsequent extraction of semantic features from the video segment (e.g., title, words, transcription segment and representative image). In our approach, local features were extracted from inter-frame similarity comparisons using multiple metrics. These include numerical measures based on optical character recognition (OCR) and pixel similarity with and without face and body position masking. We analyze and discuss the trade-offs in accuracy, performance and computational resources required. By applying these features to a corpus of labeled videos, a support vector machine determined an optimal parametric decision surface to model if adjacent frames were semantically and visually similar or not. The algorithm design, data flow, and system accuracy and performance are presented. We evaluated our system using videos from multiple engineering disciplines where the content was comprised of different presentation styles including traditional paper handouts, Microsoft PowerPoint slides, and digital ink annotations. For each educational video, a comprehensive digital-book composed of lecture clips, slideshow text, and audio transcription content can be generated based on our new scene detection algorithm. Our new scene detection approach was adopted by ClassTranscribe, an inclusive video platform that follows Universal Design for Learning principles. We report on the subsequent experiences and feedback from students who reviewed the generated digital-books as a learning component. We highlight remaining challenges and describe how instructors can use this technology in their own courses. The main contributions of this work are: Identifying why automated scene detection of engineering lecture videos is challenging; Creation of a scene-labeled corpus of videos representative of multiple undergraduate engineering disciplines and lecture styles suitable for training and testing; Description of a set of image metrics and support vector machine-based classification approach; Evaluation of the accuracy, recall and precision of our algorithm; Use of an algorithmic optimization to obviate GPU resources; Student commentary on the digital book interface created from videos using our SD algorithm; Publishing of a labeled corpus of video content to encourage additional research in this area; and an independent open-source scene extraction tool that can be used pedagogically by the ASEE community e.g., to remix and create fun shareable instructional content memes, and to create accessible audio and text descriptions for students who are blind or have low vision. Text extracted from each scene can also used to improve the accuracy of captions and transcripts, improving accessibility for students who are hard of hearing or deaf.

Digital accessibility has become an important topic in the field of HCI, but when looking at accessibility on a global scale, we find that the representation of accessibility research is mostly centered in the Global North with countries that are WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic). Our paper explores digital accessibility in Iran, focusing exclusively on its national policies on accessibility. Iran is a non-WEIRD country located in the Global South, with no reports on its digital accessibility status from the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies (G3ict). We found that there is not enough focus on accessibility in Iran's regulations and we conclude our paper by recommending directions for improving this situation such as HCI and disability organizations in Iran cooperating with G3ict. Twenty students who earned A or B course-grades in the proof unit(s) of a secondary course that addressed proof in geometry were asked to work on two proof tasks while sharing their thinking aloud and using smartpens. Students were classified into two categories: those who were successful with both proofs and those who were unsuccessful with both proofs. Large differences were observed in how often students in the two groups exhibited certain competencies. The largest gaps occurred in the ways that students: attended to the proof assumptions; used warrants in their proofs; and demonstrated logical reasoning. [For the complete proceedings, see ED629884.]
