Introduction: The auditory and vestibular systems are located in the same peripheral receptor, however they enter the CNS and go through different ways, thus creating a number of connections and reaching a wide area of the encephalon. Despite going through different ways, some changes can impair both systems. Such tests as Auditory Evoked Potentials can help find a diagnosis when vestibular alterations are seen. Objective: describe the Auditory Evoked Potential results in individuals complaining about dizziness or vertigo with Peripheral Vestibular Disorders and in normal individuals having the same complaint. Methods: Short, middle and long latency Auditory Evoked Potentials were performed as a transversal prospective study. Conclusion: individuals complaining about dizziness or vertigo can show some changes in BAEP (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential), MLAEP (Medium Latency Auditory Evoked Potential) and P300.

BackgroundHearing loss can affect approximately 15% of the pediatric population and up to 40% of the adult population. The gold standard of treatment for hearing loss is amplification of hearing thresholds by means of a hearing aid instrument. A hearing aid is an electronic device equipped with a topology of only three major components of aggregate cost. The gold standard of hearing aid fittings is face-to-face appointments in hearing aid centers, clinics, or hospitals. Telefitting encompasses the programming and adjustments of hearing aid settings remotely. Fitting hearing aids remotely is a relatively simple procedure, using minimal computer hardware and Internet access. ObjectiveThis project aimed to examine the feasibility and outcomes of remote hearing aid adjustments (telefitting) by assessing patient satisfaction via the Portuguese version of the Satisfaction With Amplification in Daily Life (SADL) questionnaire. MethodsThe Brazilian Portuguese version of the SADL was used in this experimental research design. Participants were randomly selected through the Rehabilitation Clinical (Espaco Reouvir) of the Otorhinolaryngology Department Medical School University of Sao Paulo. Of the 8 participants in the study, 5 were female and 3 were male, with a mean age of 71.5 years. The design consisted of two face-to-face sessions performed within 15 working days of each other. The remote assistance took place 15 days later. ResultsThe average scores from this study are above the mean scores from the original SADL normative data. These indicate a high level of satisfaction in participants who were fitted remotely. ConclusionsThe use of an evaluation questionnaire is a simple yet effective method to objectively assess the success of a remote fitting. Questionnaire outcomes can help hearing stakeholders improve the National Policy on Hearing Health Care in Brazil. The results of this project indicated that patient satisfaction levels of those fitted remotely were comparable to those fitted in the conventional manner, that is, face-to-face.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is an adult-onset neurodegenerative disease caused by a polyglutamine expansion in the ataxin-3 (ATXN3) gene. No effective treatment is available for this disorder, other than symptom-directed approaches. Bile acids have shown therapeutic efficacy in neurodegenerative disease models. Here, we pinpointed tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) as an efficient therapeutic, improving the motor and neuropathological phenotype of SCA3 nematode and mouse models. Surprisingly, transcriptomic and functional in vivo data showed that TUDCA acts in neuronal tissue through the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), but independently of its canonical receptor, the farnesoid X receptor (FXR). TUDCA was predicted to bind to the GR, in a similar fashion to corticosteroid molecules. GR levels were decreased in disease-affected brain regions, likely due to increased protein degradation as a consequence of ATXN3 dysfunction being restored by TUDCA treatment. Analysis of a SCA3 clinical cohort showed intriguing correlations between the peripheral expression of GR and the predicted age at disease onset in presymptomatic subjects and FKBP5 expression with disease progression, suggesting this pathway as a potential source of biomarkers for future study. Background/objectives: To compare the prevalence of intra-ocular inflammation (IOI) between brolucizumab and aflibercept in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) after intra-vitreal injections (IVI) and to compare the IOI odds ratios (ORs) of both therapies with the prevalence of septic endophthalmitis after IVI that was previously reported in the literature. Methods: A total of 468 IVI of brolucizumab (117 eyes) were compared with 2884 IVI of aflibercept (305 eyes) regarding IOI and occlusive retinal vasculitis (RV) from December 2021 to June 2023 in this retrospective study. The OR was calculated for both anti-VEGF agents and was compared with the relative risk of septic endophthalmitis after IVI. Results: There were four eyes with unilateral IOI related to brolucizumab (3.42%), one presenting uveitis (0.85%), two vitritis (1.71%) and the last one presenting occlusive RV (0.85%), compared with two eyes presenting unilateral IOI (anterior uveitis, 0.66%) and none with RV from the aflibercept cohort. The incidence of IOI per injection with brolucizumab (0.855%) was significantly higher compared with aflibercept (0.069%, p = 0.004). The OR of IOI related to brolucizumab IVI compared with septic endophthalmitis was 20 times greater (1.49 for aflibercept, p = 0.646, versus 20.15 for brolucizumab, p < 0.001). The OR of RV with brolucizumab compared with septic endophthalmitis was 4.6. Conclusion: Data from our department suggest a much higher risk of IOI and occlusive retinal vasculitis after brolucizumab when compared with aflibercept. The risk of IOI and severe sight-threatening complications related to brolucizumab is greater than the risk of septic endophthalmitis after any IVI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and serves multiple functions such as barrier protection and thermoregulation. The maintenance of its integrity and healthy structure is of paramount importance. Accordingly, technological advances in cosmetic sciences have been directed towards optimizing these factors. Plant-derived ingredients have been explored for their bioactivity profiles and sustainable sources. Grape by-products contain a group of bioactive molecules that display important biological activities. Nonetheless, many of these molecules (e.g., phenolic compounds) are unstable and susceptible to degradation. So, their encapsulation using nano/microsystems (i.e., microdispersions) has been explored as a promising solution. In this work, two grape seed extracts were obtained, one from a single grape variety (GSE-Ov) and another from a mix of five grape varieties (GSE-Sv). These extracts were analysed for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, as well as their chemical composition and molecular structure. The extract that showed the most promising properties was GSE-Ov with a DPPH IC50 of 0.079 mg mL−1. This extract was encapsulated in soy lecithin microdispersions coated with pectin, with an encapsulation efficiency of 88.8%. They showed an in vitro release of polyphenols of 59.4% during 24 h. The particles displayed a zeta potential of −20.3 mV and an average diameter of 13.6 µm. Microdispersions proved to be safe under 5 and 2.5 mg mL−1 in HaCaT and HDF cell models, respectively. Additionally, they demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity against IL-1α when tested at 2 mg mL−1. Efforts are intensifying to identify new biofuel sources in response to the pressing need to mitigate environmental pollutants, such as greenhouse gases, which are key contributors to global warming and various worldwide calamities. Algae and microalgae present themselves as excellent alternatives for solid-gaseous fuel production, given their renewable nature and non-polluting characteristics. However, making biomass production from these organisms economically feasible remains a challenge. This article collates various studies on the use of lignocellulosic waste, transforming it from environmental waste to valuable organic supplements for algae and microalgae cultivation. During the transition from a healthy state to cardiometabolic disease, patients become heavily medicated, which leads to an increasingly aberrant gut microbiome and serum metabolome, and complicates biomarker discovery.sup.1-5. Here, through integrated multi-omics analyses of 2,173 European residents from the MetaCardis cohort, we show that the explanatory power of drugs for the variability in both host and gut microbiome features exceeds that of disease. We quantify inferred effects of single medications, their combinations as well as additive effects, and show that the latter shift the metabolome and microbiome towards a healthier state, exemplified in synergistic reduction in serum atherogenic lipoproteins by statins combined with aspirin, or enrichment of intestinal Roseburia by diuretic agents combined with beta-blockers. Several antibiotics exhibit a quantitative relationship between the number of courses prescribed and progression towards a microbiome state that is associated with the severity of cardiometabolic disease. We also report a relationship between cardiometabolic drug dosage, improvement in clinical markers and microbiome composition, supporting direct drug effects. Taken together, our computational framework and resulting resources enable the disentanglement of the effects of drugs and disease on host and microbiome features in multimedicated individuals. Furthermore, the robust signatures identified using our framework provide new hypotheses for drug-host-microbiome interactions in cardiometabolic disease. Climate is arguably one of the most important factors determining the quality of wine from any given grapevine variety. This study focuses on climate impacts on vines in the upper Douro Valley, which is one of the most important viticultural regions of northern Portugal. Two different phenomena are studied: cold air pooling and unprecedented rainfall totals. Cold-air pools can have several different impacts on viticulture, including timing of budbreak, final grape quality and yields. Cold pools were studied using high time resolution data from two weather stations located in the upper Douro valley. High rainfall during late spring (April to June) can promote growth of the vines but increases the risk of fungal disease. High rainfall during harvest time (August to October) also bears the potential for severe operational disruption and heavy economic losses. The probability of unprecedented rainfall totals in spring and the harvest season over wine-growing regions of northern Portugal has been assessed using an ensemble of decadal hindcasts and three different gridded precipitation datasets. The probability of a precipitation event with unprecedented totals was low (less than 0.04), although such an event would be highly damaging to the vines. A year similar to 1993, when both seasons were exceptionally wet, would be expected to occur, on average, just once in the next 70-80 years in the current climate.

One of the most frequent, most expensive and potentially more impactful tasks in crop management is surveying and scouting the fields for problems in crop development. Any biotic / abiotic stress undetected becomes a bigger problem to solve later, with a potentially cascading effect on yield and/or quality and, subsequently, crop value. For annual crops (such as corn, soy, etc.) this can be solved in a cost-effective way with Sentinel data. For permanent crops planted in rows (such as vineyards), the interference from the inter-row makes it much more challenging. Under a contract for the European Space Agency (ESA), Spin.Works has been developing an early anomaly detection system based on fusion of Sentinel-2 and UAV imagery, targeting an update rate of 5 days. The early anomaly detection is applied to vineyards, particularly, for nutrient and water stresses. The early anomaly detection system is integrated into Spin.Works’ MAPP.it platform and its development is being carried out in close cooperation with the internal R&D group of Sogrape Vinhos, Portugal's largest winemaker and a long-standing MAPP.it user.

Microbiome community typing analyses have recently identified the Bacteroides2 (Bact2) enterotype, an intestinal microbiota configuration that is associated with systemic inflammation and has a high prevalence in loose stools in humans.sup.1,2. Bact2 is characterized by a high proportion of Bacteroides, a low proportion of Faecalibacterium and low microbial cell densities.sup.1,2, and its prevalence varies from 13% in a general population cohort to as high as 78% in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.sup.2. Reported changes in stool consistency.sup.3 and inflammation status.sup.4 during the progression towards obesity and metabolic comorbidities led us to propose that these developments might similarly correlate with an increased prevalence of the potentially dysbiotic Bact2 enterotype. Here, by exploring obesity-associated microbiota alterations in the quantitative faecal metagenomes of the cross-sectional MetaCardis Body Mass Index Spectrum cohort (n = 888), we identify statin therapy as a key covariate of microbiome diversification. By focusing on a subcohort of participants that are not medicated with statins, we find that the prevalence of Bact2 correlates with body mass index, increasing from 3.90% in lean or overweight participants to 17.73% in obese participants. Systemic inflammation levels in Bact2-enterotyped individuals are higher than predicted on the basis of their obesity status, indicative of Bact2 as a dysbiotic microbiome constellation. We also observe that obesity-associated microbiota dysbiosis is negatively associated with statin treatment, resulting in a lower Bact2 prevalence of 5.88% in statin-medicated obese participants. This finding is validated in both the accompanying MetaCardis cardiovascular disease dataset (n = 282) and the independent Flemish Gut Flora Project population cohort (n = 2,345). The potential benefits of statins in this context will require further evaluation in a prospective clinical trial to ascertain whether the effect is reproducible in a randomized population and before considering their application as microbiota-modulating therapeutics.
