The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is suffering from a substantial decline in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in exorheic basins, threatening water resources that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. TWS changes are commonly estimated using gravity satellites through observations of the total terrestrial mass storage (TMS) change, with an implicit assumption of a negligible contribution from sediment transport. Through long‐term (2002–2017) sediment flux observations in seven headwater basins on the TP, we reveal that the gravity satellite‐derived TMS has decreased at a rate of 3.85 ± 0.23 Gt yr−1 in the seven basins, of which 0.35 ± 0.04 Gt yr−1 is contributed by sediment transport. Neglecting this contribution leads to an overestimation of the TWS loss by 10.1 ± 1.3%, equivalent to the annual water demand of an additional 0.62 million people in the surrounding nations. Regionally, the overestimation is surprisingly high in the Indus River and Yarkant River basins, reaching up to 50.8%–77.6%. Plain Language Summary: Accurate quantification of the change in the terrestrial water storage (TWS) on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) is imperative to improve the assessment of water availability that are critical for ∼2 billion people downstream. Background: The microplastic transport of rivers is a complex spatiotemporal process; however, only limited knowledge exists on it, making its monitoring complicated. The study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal dynamics of suspended sediments and microplastics based on measurements (1) every five days for 2 years at one site and (2) annual repetition at 29 sites along the 750-km-long Tisza River for 3 years. Water samples were taken by pumping (1 m3). Machine learning algorithms were applied to Sentinel images to analyze the spatiality of sediment transport. Results: In the Tisza River (Central Europe), the microplastic concentration (MPCmean: 35 ± 27 item/m3) and the suspended sediment concentration (SSCmean: 60 ± 57 g/m3) showed high temporal variations. During low stages, the concentrations dropped as most transported sediments were deposited on the bottom. These sediments, including microplastics, were remobilized during flood waves, thus, higher MPC and SSC were measured. The first flood wave after a low-stage period had the highest concentrations. The increased transport capacity of the river during floods created large-scale suspended sediment and microplastic waves with increased concentrations. The mean MPC gradually increased between 2021 (19 ± 13.6 item/m3) and 2022 (23.7 ± 15.8 item/m3), and then it more than doubled (2023: 57 ± 44.8 item/m3). The tributaries acted as suspended sediment and microplastic conveyors. On the Sentinel images, medium-scale clouds were identified, with the suspended sediment clouds being more pronounced than microplastic clouds. Fewer and longer clouds appeared during low stages, separated by clearer water bodies. During flood waves, shorter clouds were detected. The tributaries with increased suspended sediment and microplastic transport created well-distinguishable clouds in the main river. Conclusions: Identifying suspended sediment and microplastic clouds in a river could support more precise monitoring. The hydrological background of the monitoring and the existence of these clouds should be considered, as sampling from clouds with increased SSC and MPC provides different data than sampling from the clearer water bodies between two clouds. This article presents a study on the wind-sand dynamics of blowouts in the Xilingol sandy grassland in Inner Mongolia, China. The study investigates the changes in airflow and sediment transport within the blowouts. The results show that the wind direction inside the blowout is influenced by the direction of the incoming wind, and the rate of wind speed acceleration and sand transport is primarily influenced by wind direction and wind speed. Soil erosion poses a significant problem in the Mediterranean region, posing serious threats to the environment and natural resources. The objective of this study is to identify and evaluate the risks associated with gully erosion in the Medjerda watershed in the northeastern part of Algeria. To accomplish this goal, two models were utilized: the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP) and the frequency ratio (FR). Twelve factors that contribute to soil erosion were considered in the study: slope, elevation, distance to streams, land use and land cover, drainage density (DD), topographic wetness index (TWI), rainfall, soil groups, lineament density, soil power index (SPI), sediment transport index (STI), and plan curvature. The results indicate that sediment transport index (STI), rainfall, and slope are the most influential factors in predicting erosion in the Medjerda Basin. To validate the models used, the area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) was employed. The AUC values obtained for the FR and F-AHP models were 75.5 and 73.7%, respectively, indicating their excellent accuracy in identifying the erosion susceptibility area. The accuracy ratings of both models demonstrate their outstanding predictive capabilities. Thus, the results of soil erosion susceptibility maps with a better success rate and forecast could be beneficial and effective for implementing various policy measures to safeguard soil. Foreshore slope is crucial in designing beach berm nourishment schemes and understanding coastal responses to wave forces. Beach berm nourishment often suffers from a high loss rate, necessitating theoretical research and design parameter comparison to mitigate these losses early on. This study uses Bagnold's energy conservation method and the small-angle approximation method to establish a relationship between cross-shore sediment transport and foreshore slope. The feedback mechanism between these factors shows that when the foreshore slope is fewer than 10 degrees, a smaller initial slope results in a reduced rate of sediment transport. Over time, the foreshore slope decreases and eventually reaches equilibrium, promoting the formation of an offshore sandbar, which helps reduce sediment loss. Using data from Guanhu Beach in Dapeng Bay, this study constructs a realistic numerical beach model to simulate the dynamic behavior of beach profiles with varying foreshore slopes under the influence of monsoon waves and storm surges. The simulation results support the feedback mechanism findings, demonstrating that profiles with minimal foreshore slopes experience the least initial sediment loss, thus facilitating sandbar formation more effectively. Vegetation plays a key role in trapping sediments and further controlling pollutants. However, few studies were conducted to clarify the erosion and deposition laws of sediments and the influence factors caused by vegetation patch properties, which is not conducive to the revelation of riverbank protection and erosion prevention. Therefore, this study investigated the change in scouring and deposition characteristics around submerged vegetation patches of nine kinds of typical configurations and their influencing factors. Vegetation patches were assembled from three vegetation densities (G/d = 0.83, 1.3, and 1.77, representing dense, medium, and sparse, respectively), and three vegetation patch thicknesses (dn = 170, 400, and 630, representing narrow, usual, and wide, respectively), to measure vegetation patch property influences. Flow velocity, scouring, and deposition characteristics under nine patches were determined by a hydraulic flume experiment, three-dimensional acoustic Doppler velocimetry (ADV), and three-dimensional laser scanner, and then ten geometry and morphology indices were measured and calculated based on the results of laser scanning. Results showed that both vegetation patch density and thickness were positively related to the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) above the vegetation canopy, and only vegetation patch density was negatively related to the flow velocity above the vegetation canopy. The relation between the product of density and vegetation patch thickness and erosion area in planform (EA) showed a power function (R2 = 0.644). Both density and vegetation patch thickness determined the scouring degree, but deposition location and amount did not rely on each one simply. On average, medium density showed the smallest maximum erosion length (MEL), EA, deposition area in planform (DA), and average deposition length (ADL) and a minimum of the above parameters also occurred at narrow vegetation patch thickness. The shape factor of the erosion volume (SFEV), the shape factor of the deposition volume (SFDV), ADL, and MEL of medium density and narrow thickness vegetation patch (G/d = 1.3, dn = 170) were significantly smaller than that of other types of patches. DA and equivalent prismatic erosion depth on the erosion area (EPED) were significantly linearly related (R2 = 0.766). Consequently, most sediment was deposited close to the vegetation patch edge. It is suggested that vegetation patch thickness and density should be given to control sediment transport. In particular, natural vegetation growth changes vegetation patch density and then alters vegetation patch thickness. Management and repair need to be first considered. Understanding the dynamics of shoreline change is essential for efficient coastal management. This research provides a thorough analysis of the long-term changes to the shoreline in the Tamil Nadu district of Tirunelveli, India, spanning five decades (1972–2022). Remote sensing techniques and digital shoreline analysis techniques were employed to investigate the temporal variations and underlying mechanisms influencing shoreline dynamics. Remote sensing methods include satellite imagery analysis, digital shoreline analysis techniques involve GIS-based mapping and measurement of coastal features. The statistical methods like EPR, LRR and NSM techniques were used in this study to identify the shoreline changes. It considers the sedimentary structures of tidal flats and grain size investigations in the region to improve our comprehension of the geological characteristics and sediment dynamics driving shoreline alterations. The findings demonstrate how the shoreline location at Koodankulam changed considerably during the course of the research. This study report spans a sizable length of time and provides significant insights on the long-term behaviour of the Tirunelveli district coastline. Sedimentary structures and grain size investigations provide insights into erosion, deposition patterns, and sediment transport, crucial for understanding shoreline dynamics. The three primary very high erosion hotspots in the research area are Kunjanvilai, Koodankulam, and Kuttam. At a rate of − 23.5, − 23.6, and − 23.6 m/year, maximum erosion is shown by EPR, LRR, and WLR. This study outcomes major two regions like Vijayapathi and Anjugramam are facing more accretion zone. A maximum of 13.33, 11.14, and 11.14 m/year is shown by EPR, LRR, and WLR. According to projection research, the spans will measure 60.67 km in 2042 and 59.62 km in 2032, respectively. The present paper develops a new framework to predict the mean flow through an array of cylinders in which the flow around the array (array‐scale) and the flow around individual cylinders (element‐scale) are modeled separately using actuator disc theory and empirical drag models respectively, and then coupled through the net drag force. Applying this framework only requires knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations for arrays of between 7 and 109 cylinders having different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and bounding shapes (circular, square) in both two‐ and three‐dimensional flows. In general, the framework outperforms existing models which require calibration and are only valid for part of the practical parameter space. The demonstrated scale separation suggests different combinations of element‐scale and array‐scale models/theories may be used for other arrangements of bluff bodies. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations of arrays of cylinders with different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and array shapes (square, circular). With only knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow, the framework predicts the mean flow exceptionally well across a wide range of practical flow conditions. This leads to a step‐change in our ability to predict the fraction of incoming flow passing through a porous array, hydrodynamic load on offshore structures, and sediment flux within aquatic vegetation systems when combined with bed load transport models. The framework could be an important guide for coastal and riverine restoration projects using aquatic vegetation and the design of offshore structures and turbine farms. The battering of bedrock by bedload collisions is the primary mechanism by which bedrock rivers erode and landscapes evolve. The energy imparted via impacts acts to detach bedrock via the growth and intersection of surface fractures. We present impact experiments designed to test the influence of particle impact energy on bedrock erosion rates. We found that erosional efficiency increased with increasing impact energy. Notably, these increases in efficiency are not captured by a widely‐used mechanistic bedrock erosion model. Observed increases in erosional efficiency were linked with enhanced elastic energy dissipation captured by differences in the coefficient of restitution. We suggest that this increase in energy dissipation is indicative of enhanced crack extension for high velocity impacts. Our experiments indicate a clear energy‐dependence for bedrock detachment processes that is not yet captured by bedrock incision models but may be integrated into long‐term erosion rates and landscape evolution. We designed an experiment where we hit a bedrock sample with a steel ball at a range of impact energies, over and over again, up to 30,000 times, and measured how much material was chipped away. High energy impacts eroded more material, but this increased efficiency of erosion is not fully captured by impact‐based erosion models. We hypothesize that for higher energy impacts, a larger fraction of the incoming energy is used to crack the bedrock, more easily eroding material. We liken the relative influence of these high energy impacts to a battering ram, where only a few strikes can easily break down a door, whereas lower energy impacts, similar to a simple knock, are unlikely to achieve the same result. We suggest that this effect may be important in determining the influence of extreme events on bedrock erosion over long timescales. Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. This study used sediment cores collected from the interior of a mangrove forest to study how the aboveground roots, called pneumatophores, influence hydrodynamic conditions and sediment transport, and in particular the onset and rate of sediment erosion. Individual pneumatophores generate eddies that enhance turbulence, compared to conditions without pneumatophores. In sandy soil, vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion. Controlling sediment to reduce debris-flow hazard is generally approached using retention basins that can be closed or have an outlet structure, generally an open check dam. They are usually placed in mild slope zones that allow minimal works for the excavation and the foundation of the outlet structure if present. Recently, it has been shown that the detention of sediments can also be achieved in the high-sloping reaches of debris-flow channels using deposition areas, basins that are open on the downstream side. In this work, we propose an approach for controlling the sediment volume transported by debris flows consisting of a cascade of deposition areas and retention basins. We also include a framework for planning, sizing, and checking the works. Two scenarios are considered, corresponding to the maximum values of the debris-flow peak discharge and volume, respectively. Moreover, the presence or absence of boulders is also considered. For this purpose, a method that evaluates the clogging of a single open check dam as a function of the coarse fraction of the sediment volume is simply extended to the case of multiple dams and implemented in a routing model. The proposed approach is applied along Ru Secco Creek in northeast Italy to defend a resort area and a village hit by a high-magnitude debris flow in 2015. After a careful survey and study, a solution with a combination of deposition areas and retention basins is planned and sized. The validity and performance of the proposed solution are analyzed using debris-flow modeling for two scenarios, considering both the absence and presence of boulders. This paper presents the parallelization of two widely used implicit numerical solvers for the solution of partial differential equations on structured meshes, namely, the ADI (Alternating-Direction Implicit) solver for tridiagonal linear systems and the SIP (Strongly Implicit Procedure) solver for the penta-diagonal systems. Both solvers were parallelized using CUDA (Computer Unified Device Architecture) Fortran on GPGPUs (General-Purpose Graphics Processing Units). The parallel ADI solver (P-ADI) is based on the Parallel Cyclic Reduction (PCR) algorithm, while the parallel SIP solver (P-SIP) uses the wave front method (WF) following a diagonal line calculation strategy. To map the solution schemes onto the hierarchical block-threads framework of the CUDA on the GPU, the P-ADI solver adopted two mapping methods, one block thread with iterations (OBM-it) and multi-block threads (MBMs), while the P-SIP solver also used two mappings, one conventional mapping using effective WF lines (WF-e) with matrix coefficients and solution variables defined on original computational mesh, and a newly proposed mapping using all WF mesh (WF-all), on which matrix coefficients and solution variables are defined. Both the P-ADI and the P-SIP have been integrated into a two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic model, the CCHE2D (Center of Computational Hydroscience and Engineering) model, developed by the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering at the University of Mississippi. This study for the first time compared these two parallel solvers and their efficiency using examples and applications in complex geometries, which can provide valuable guidance for future uses of these two parallel implicit solvers in computational fluids dynamics (CFD). Both parallel solvers demonstrated higher efficiency than their serial counterparts on the CPU (Central Processing Unit): 3.73~4.98 speedup ratio for flow simulations, and 2.166~3.648 speedup ratio for sediment transport simulations. In general, the P-ADI solver is faster than but not as stable as the P-SIP solver; and for the P-SIP solver, the newly developed mapping method WF-all significantly improved the conventional mapping method WF-e. This paper introduces a three-layer system, proposing a comprehensive model of granular mixture transport over a mobile sloped bed in a steady flow. This system, consisting of the bottom, contact, and upper zones, provides complete, continuous sediment velocity and concentration vertical profiles. The aim of this study is to develop and experimentally verify this model for sediment transport over a bottom locally sloping in line with or opposite the direction of sediment flow. The model considers gravity's effect on sediment transport in the bottom (dense) layer when the component of gravity parallel to the bottom acts together with shear stresses associated with water flow. This is a crucial factor often overlooked in previous studies. This effect causes an increase in velocity in the mobile sublayer of the dense layer and significantly affects the vertical distributions of velocity and concentration above this layer. The proposed shear variation due to the interaction between fractions and an intensive sediment mixing and sorting process over a mobile sloped bed adds to the novelty of our approach. The data sets used for the model's validation cover various conditions, including slopes, grain diameters, densities, and grain mobility conditions, from incipient motion to a fully mobilized bed. This extensive validation process instils confidence in the theoretical description and its applicability to real-world scenarios in the design of hydraulic infrastructure, such as dams, barrages, bridges, and irrigation, and flood control systems. Moorings and axial surveys using acoustic Doppler current profilers in microtidal Masan Bay were conducted to reveal impacts of coastal seiches on sediment behaviors. The hydrodynamic circulation in the bay was dominated by sluggish tidal and residual currents, with which the coastal seiches with a 1-h period were detected. The coastal seiches velocity (useiche) accounted for approximately 30% of the total velocities, causing back-and-forth water motions along the channel. This was insufficient to resuspend bed sediments without external forcings. Nevertheless, it influenced the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) of turbidity maximum (~40 mg l-1) at the central part of bay, showing SSC anomaly of 8 mg l-1. Although the seiche-induced sediment fluxes were only 1% of the total fluxes due to offsetting effect of bidirectional flows, they reached up to 0.040x10-3 kg m-2 s-1 at each pulse of coastal seiches. Repetitive coastal seiches lifted the sediment particles to the upper layer where they would not have risen if not for seiche vertical motion. However, the distance that the coastal seiches can transport the suspended sediments was too short compared to their transportable amounts. Even if sediment particles within turbidity maximum were advected by coastal seiches, they could not leave the region. This process was intensified toward the land because the useiche slowed down the further as it moved away from the node. As long as the bed sediments were resuspended, the coastal seiches were expected to enhance the potential for water pollution by causing repetitive sediment redistribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recession of Alpine glaciers causes an increase in the extent of proglacial areas and leads to changes in the water discharge and sediment balance (morphodynamics and sediment transport). Although the processes occurring in proglacial areas are relevant not only from a scientific point of view but also for the purpose of climate change adaptation, there is a lack of work on the continuous monitoring and multitemporal characterization of these areas. This study offers a multidisciplinary approach that merges the contributions of different scientific disciplines, such as hydrology, geophysics, geomatics, and water engineering, to characterize the Rutor Glacier and its proglacial area. Since 2020, we have surveyed the glacier and its proglacial area using both uncrewed and crewed aerial surveys (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8089499 , ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10100968 , ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10074530 , ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10101236 , ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7713146 ,). We have determined the bathymetry of the most downstream proglacial lake and the thickness of the sediments deposited on its bottom (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7682072 ,). The water depth at four different locations within the hydrographic network of the proglacial area (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7697100 ,) and the bedload at the glacier snout (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7708800 ,) have also been continuously monitored. In order to investigate the impact of marine propeller wake fields on sediment siltation in shallow water channels, this study employs the unsteady RANS approach and the Volume of Fluid model. A full-scale numerical self-propulsion test was conducted on a 50,000 DWT oil tanker under the influence of a free surface. The research includes forecasting the effect of propeller wakes on sediment redeposition following the dredging of the approach channel to Jiaxing Port in the China Sea. Initially, uncertainty research was carried out on the full-scale ship and propeller system, and the credibility of the computational results was quantified. The simulated results based on the sediment transport numerical model were then compared and validated against actual data from monitoring stations. The self-propulsion performance and the velocity distribution of the propeller wake were examined under three different propeller speeds. Scenarios simulated included no ship navigation, daily single-ship navigation, and daily two-ship navigation, evaluating the siltation distribution within the channel over one month. The results demonstrate that ship propeller wakes positively influence the reduction of channel sedimentation, with the maximum monthly siltation reduction reaching 0.108 m during single-ship tidal navigation and 0.11 m during two-ship tidal navigation. Nearshore waves, wind, and tidal current mobilize seabed sediments; sort, transport, and redistribute the sediments; and modify the nearshore seabed morphology. Waves play a dominant role in morphological changes among winds, waves, and tidal currents. The nearshore wave breaking induces the initiation of sediment movement, and the associated alongshore current transports a large volume of sediments that tend to either accrete toward or erode from the beach face and seabed. Sediment transport rate in the nearshore waters during cyclones is higher than that under normal conditions. The measured changes due to Cyclone Nivar in November 2020 in the nearshore morphology along the Mahabalipuram coast are examined to understand the response of nearshore morphology to cyclonic wave-induced forcing. The beach-profile measurements across 10 transects at 100 m spacing covering about 1000 m along the coast were measured before and after the passage of Cyclone Nivar as a part of the present field study. The evolving beach profiles during Cyclone Nivar were simulated using the storm-induced beach change (SBEACH) model, which is a cross-shore profile evolution model. The changes due to berm erosion and deposition of nearshore sand bars have been compared from field measurements data and model prediction. The calibrated model was then used to simulate the beach profile response at two other locations along the cyclone-affected coastline to examine the shoreline impact. It is difficult to predict the detailed morphodynamic processes induced by heavily sediment-laden floods in alluvial rives, due to the complexity in topography and the significant channel evolution rates, especially in a braided reach of the Lower Yellow River (LYR). A two-dimensional morphodynamic model using a coupled solution approach was firstly developed, with the effects of sediment concentration and bed deformation being directly considered in the hydrodynamic governing equations. The finite volume method with the HLL-MUSCL scheme was adopted in the numerical solution, which can obtain second-order accuracy in space and time. In addition, unstructured meshes were used to accommodate the irregular boundaries. The proposed model was validated using measurements in the braided reach of the LYR during the flood events of 2020 and 2004, with general agreement obtained between the calculated and measured hydrographs of flow and sediment concentration. The highest accuracy was achieved in the simulation of discharge, with a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) of 0.92. The simulation accuracy in sediment concentration was improved by the coupled approach, with the relative error of the calculated peak value decreasing from 17 % to 9 %. In addition, transport characteristics of graded suspended sediments were well simulated, with the fine fraction being transported downstream and the medium fraction depositing in the study reach. Influences of channel adjustments on the sediment transport processes were investigated during a flood event. The results demonstrated that the incised channel in 2020 was characterized by a larger water depth and smaller velocity, as compared with the shallow channel in 2004. Consequently, the peak discharge decreased and the flood propagation time was extended under the 2020 topography, associated with the lower sediment discharge at the outlet due to the reduced sediment transport capacity. Fine-grained cohesive sediments in estuaries play a critical role in sediment transport and biogeochemical cycles in estuaries. Due to the convergence of marine saltwater and freshwater runoff, combined with periodic tidal cycles, fine-grained sediments exhibit intricate flocculation processes that are challenging to simulate. A size-resolved flocculation module using a bin-based scheme aids in modeling these processes but is hindered by high computational costs. In this study, we develop a new spectrum-based scheme based on the spectral shape of floc size distribution from the original bin-based scheme to expedite modeling execution. This new scheme is implemented in the Stony Brook Parallel Ocean Model (sbPOM) and applied to simulate fine-grained sediment transport in the Hudson River estuary. The effectiveness of this spectrum-based scheme is assessed by comparing its simulations with observations and results from the original bin-based scheme. The findings indicate that the new scheme can simulate the evolution of suspended sediment concentration well at a specific point by comparisons with in-situ observations. Specifically, the results of the 50 paired experiments show an average percentage difference of 1.86% and an average speedup ratio of 4.51 times compared to the original bin-based scheme. In summary, the new spectrum-based scheme offers significant acceleration benefits for the size-resolved flocculation module and has the potential for widespread application in simulating fine-grained sediments in estuaries. This study aims to investigate the hydrodynamic-morphological interactions on a microtidal intermediate-dissipative beach under low to moderate wave energy conditions using field measurements during two climatic seasons. The separate contributions of currents, sea-swell waves, and infragravity waves to high- and low-frequency sediment fluxes were analyzed. The infragravity wave energy was more relevant near the swash zone than in other areas. Although the currents are the primary suspended sediment transport mechanism, the results suggest that the waves are an important driver of sediment suspension from the seabed. The results indicate that Sea-Swell (SS) waves and cross-shore currents are the prevailing hydrodynamic factors in nearshore sediment transport, and the cross-shore suspended sediment transport rates are higher than those in alongshore transport. The submerged bar intensified during the wet season (1–4 November 2018) when the wave height intensities were lower, contrary to the dry season (24–25 March 2018). Significant accretion nearshore was identified (in the subaerial beach) during the wet season when the suspended sediments were greater, the SS-wave heights nearshore were lower, and sediment flux was directed onshore. A notorious erosion was distinguished during the dry season. The most representative volume changes occurred during the dry season (with high erosion), which is attributed to the high SS-wave energy. Abstract: Tidal flats are dynamic coastal ecosystems continually reshaped by natural processes and human activities. This study investigates the application of Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis to the long-term profile evolution of tidal flats along the Jiansan Bend of the Qiantang River Estuary, China. By applying EOF analysis to profiles observed from 1984 to 2023, this study identifies dominant modes of variability and their spatial and temporal characteristics, offering insights into the complex sediment transport and morphological evolution processes. EOF analysis helps unravel the complex interactions between natural and anthropogenic factors shaping tidal flats, with the first three eigenfunctions accounting for over 90% of the observed variance. The first spatial eigenfunction captures the primary trend, while the subsequent two eigenfunctions reveal secondary and tertiary modes of variability. A conceptual model developed in this study elucidates the interplay between hydrodynamic forces and morphological changes, highlighting the rotation and oscillation of tidal flat profiles in response to seasonal variations in hydrological conditions. Beach–dune systems are highly dynamic features of the coastal system, the evolution of which is influenced by several processes that occur at very different spatial and temporal scales. To mitigate shoreline retreat that threatens extensive coastal areas worldwide, coastal erosion mitigation measures are implemented, aiming to make coastal areas resilient to the effects induced by coastal erosion and the anticipated climate change related to storms, flood events and sea level rise. Numerical modelling can support planned and sustainable coastal management from a medium-to-long-term perspective (decades). This research focuses on presenting contributions regarding the numerical modelling of subaerial beach dynamics (berm width and dune systems interactions) from a medium-term perspective. The method applied is based on a combination of the results of two simplified numerical models (the LTC and CS-Model). The results demonstrate the potential of the proposed combined model for medium-term projections, allowing for the interpretation of beach–dune dynamics and the evaluation of the importance of longshore and cross-shore sediment transport processes. Bottom trawling in submarine canyons can affect their sedimentary dynamics, but studies addressing this topic are still scarce. In the Gulf of Palermo (NW Sicily, SW Mediterranean Sea), bottom trawling occurs on the continental slope, but principally concentrates within Oreto Canyon. Hydrographic profiles and time series data of temperature, turbidity, and currents obtained by a CTD probe and by moored instruments, respectively, revealed increased turbidity values and the presence of bottom and intermediate nepheloid layers coinciding with periods of bottom trawling activity. The delay between the onset of trawling activities along the Oreto canyon axis and the increase in water turbidity at the mooring location indicate that trawling resuspended particles are progressively advected down-canyon by hydrodynamic processes. Topographic waves and near-inertial currents seem to contribute to the sediment transport of resuspended particles as bottom and intermediate nepheloid layers. This study examines the spatial pattern of fractional sediment mobility and assesses the influence of morphologic units on bedload transport in a small pool‐riffle reach with limited supply. Using a 2D hydraulic model and a subsurface‐based sediment transport model, shear stresses, fractional sediment mobility, and bedload transport were examined for flow events ranging in magnitude between 0.2Qbf and 1.5Qbf. Results reveal that while spatial variations in shear stress decrease as discharge increases, only a small proportion of the bed experiences high transport rates. At the reach scale, riffles are the primary morphological unit contributing to fully mobile sediment for all size fractions. However, at a subunit scale, there is evidence of sediment transport reversal for grains >32 mm at flows near or exceeding bankfull discharge in association with shear stress reversal. These transport reversals are important for maintaining pools despite their infrequent occurrence in the study reach. Sediment transport maps indicate that bed morphology considerably influences sediment transport at low to moderate flows. During these events, the shear stress is sensitive to local bed topography and partial mobility is the dominant transport process. In contrast, variations in bedload transport rates decrease during high flows when the flow is less sensitive to variations in bed topography and the bed becomes fully mobile. Wildfire substantially alters aquatic ecosystems by inducing moderate to catastrophic physical and chemical changes. However, the relations of environmental and watershed variables that drive those effects are complex. We present a Driver‐Factor‐Stressor‐Effect (DFSE) conceptual framework to assess the current state of the science related to post‐wildfire water‐quality. We reviewed 64 peer‐reviewed papers using the DFSE framework to identify drivers, factors, stressors, and effects associated with each study. A total of five drivers were identified and ranked according to their frequency of occurrence in the literature: atmospheric processes > fire characteristics > ecologic processes and characteristics > land surface characteristics > soil characteristics. Commonly reported stressors include increased nutrients, runoff, and sediment transport. Furthermore, although several different factors have been used at least once to explain water‐quality effects, relatively few factors outside of precipitation and fire characteristics are frequently studied. We identified several gaps indicating the need for long‐term monitoring, multi‐factor studies, consideration of organic contaminants, consideration of groundwater, and inclusion of soil characteristics. This assessment expands on other reviews and meta‐analyses by exploring causal linkages between influential variables and overall effects in post‐wildfire watersheds. Information gathered from our assessment and the framework itself can be used to inform future monitoring plans and as a guide for modeling efforts focused on better understanding specific processes or to mitigate potential risks of post‐wildfire water quality. Sediment transport remains a significant challenge for researchers due to the intricate nature of the physical processes involved and the diverse characteristics of watercourses worldwide. A type of watercourse that is of particular interest for study is the ephemeral streams, found primarily in semiarid and arid regions. Due to their unique nature, a new measurement algorithm was created and a modified bed load sampler was built. Measurement of the bed load transport rate and calculation of the water discharge were conducted in an ephemeral stream in Northeastern Greece, where the mean calculated streamflow rate ranged from 0.019 to 0.314 m3/s, and the measured sediment load transport rates per unit width varied from 0.00001 to 0.00213 kg/m/s. The sediment concentration was determined through various methods, including nonlinear regression equations and formulas developed by Yang, with the coefficients of these formulas calibrated accordingly. The results demonstrated that the equations derived from Yang's multiple regression analysis offered a superior fit compared to the original equations. As a result, two modified versions of Yang's stream sediment transport formulas were developed and are presented to the readership. To assess the accuracy of the modified formulas, a comparison was conducted between the calculated total sediment concentrations and the measured total sediment concentrations based on various statistical criteria. The analysis shows that none of Yang's original formulas fit the available data well, but after optimization, both modified formulas can be applied to the specific ephemeral stream. The results indicate also that the formulas derived from the nonlinear regression can be successfully used for the determination of the total sediment concentration in the ephemeral stream and have a better fit compared to Yang's formulas. The correlation from the nonlinear regression equations suggests that total sediment transport is primarily influenced by water discharge and rainfall intensity, with the latter showing a high correlation coefficient of 0.998. The Citarum watershed and the Saguling reservoir are vital natural resources in Indonesia, affecting the livelihood of West Java and the DKI Jakarta population. This study aimed to assess the soil erosion in the Upper Citarum watershed and identify its source. The study used the fallout radionuclide technique, geochemical tracers, and an unmixing model to measure soil erosion and the contribution of suspended sediment sources due to erosion. Soil bulk transects and surface soil were sampled using a coring tool on the Ciwidey and Cisangkuy sub-watersheds. Riverbank and suspended sediment samples were collected from tributaries and rivers. With 137Cs, 40% of the samples had values below the minimum detectable activity, and vice versa for 210Pbex, all samples are detectable. For mitigation, bare land needs to be recovered due to its erosion (25.6 t ha−1 year−1) exceeding the tolerance erosion value (17 t ha−1 year−1). Statistically, Mg and Na were the most appropriate composite tracers for suspended sediment contribution. The unmixing model predicted the sediment contributors from bare land (58%), the riverbank (32.7%), and plantation land (9.3%). Proper land conservation could reduce sediment supply by almost 14.7% and extend the reservoir's life. This is the first study to report the feasibility of the unmixing model in Indonesia. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of the riverbed deformation, bank erosion, and channel changes in the lower Sangu River basin using a depth-averaged 2-D flow model where suspended sediment transport is dominant and its flow characteristics are influenced by active tides. A 45 km long area including the river mouth is computed using the 2-D model, and the results are compared with the observed channel changes. The computation results show that bed deformation and channel change are mainly caused during the ebb tide period of the spring tide particularly in an area of about 10 km from the river mouth. The detail study domain calculation results show that the flow concentration at the bend area causes the bed erosion there, and the eddy separated from the main stream causes the sediment deposition at the inner bank, while this eddy is not developed at the outer bank, resulting in the bank erosion there. Through these investigations, the characteristics and mechanisms of the morphodynamics in the lower Sangu River reach, particularly the potential of the combination of tides and floods to enhance riverbed deformations and the associated bank shifts, have been clarified. Estimates sediment transport in Iraqi Rivers are essential for effective rivers management, particularly when delivery rates is potential threat to environment and ecological systems. Therefore, this research was performed for estimating sediment transport rates in a certain reach from Euphrates River downstream Al Hindiyah Barrage and examine the stat of Entrainment Rate Esi of bed sediments under a unsteady stream flow. In spite of complexity and the difficulty of conducting measurements, the sediment load were measured with satisfactory perfection to achieve acceptable results for monitoring this river reach. The acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) technique were used to measure velocity distribution, cross section profiles, and using (Helley-Smith) sampler to collect bed load samples from twenty cross sections downstream Al Hindiya Barrage. The investigation of suspended sediment concentration in vertical profiles has consisted of using an Entrainment rate relation (Esi), also for evaluating materials concentration near the bed and the upward, the vertical distribution of material particles was examine in the water column. The measurement results are clarified that there are many regions of river covered with high sedimentation, but the suspended load is prevalent mode of transport with average value 97.313%. The observed suspended sediment yield in the river reach was ranged from 386.645 ton/day to 6588.58 ton/day during the drought condition and low level of water discharge and may change with discharge change. While bed load yield ranged between 0.270 ton/day to 5.394 ton/day. The investigation is represented a non-equilibrium condition in sediment transport is prevalent circumstance in channel system. It is tested the relation of Ei against limited grainsizes data and skin shear velocity U*skin then analyzed the regression. The result is shown that near-bed entrainment, evaluated at 15% of the flow depth, decreases with the ratio of settling velocity to skin-friction shear velocity due to its role in determining bed load-layer concentrations. The fit relation for R2 = 0.48 and correlation r = -0.55 are shown that outstanding an association between maximal flow resistance and sediment diffusivities, this is probably because bed-form prompt by turbulence flow which caused nonlinear dependence. Coastal development can significantly impact nearby shorelines, raising concerns about erosion and sustainability. This study investigated the long-term effects of the Tangier Med port on the coastlines of Dalia and Ksar Sghir beaches in Morocco using remote sensing techniques and the digital shoreline analysis system (DSAS). A multi-decadal approach analyzed shoreline changes for pre-construction (1988-2005) and post-construction (2004-2022) periods. The obtained findings reveal contrasting patterns. Ksar Sghir displayed accretion, due to port infrastructure disrupting natural sediment transport. Dalia beach exhibited a mixed response with ongoing erosion and localized accretion, influenced by the construction of a fishing port on the eastern side of the beach. To gain further insights into the future trajectory of these shorelines, a Kalman filter model was employed to predict shoreline positions for the year 2034 and 2044. These predictions highlight the potential for continued divergence between the beaches. Dalia beach faces potential infrastructure damage on the western side due to ongoing erosion, while the eastern side may require increased dredging to maintain fishing port access. Ksar Sghir beach, on the other hand, is projected to experience continued accretion with minimal anticipated negative impacts. This research offers valuable insights into the differential impacts of port development on adjacent coastlines. It highlights the importance of long-term monitoring and pre-construction data for understanding coastal interventions. The University of Southern Mississippi has developed the coastal CUBEnet environment. Coastal CUBEnet is a high-resolution, coastal ocean sensor, modeling, and data sharing web-based network that provides the environmental intelligence needed to support the complex modeling of the interlinked processes in the northern Gulf of Mexico. With near-real time data delivery via a common infrastructure, CUBEnet uses state of the art sensors to provide a set of networked measurements systems, visualization tools, and model developments to gain an understanding of the Gulf of Mexico's marine environments. CUBEnet is also a mechanism for improved human engagement with Gulf of Mexico resources and provides stake holders with the data needed to make informed coastal, environmental, and economic decisions. The Coastal CUBEnet's data environment utilizes both stationary and uncrewed mobile systems and high-resolution distributed sensors to create a networked platform across the northern coastal Gulf of Mexico. CUBEnet's modeling environment has developed an implementation of The Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Wave Sediment Transport (COAWST) Model for the Mississippi Bight region that has been applied to investigate shore to shelf advective exchange processes, and their influence on coastal water quality conditions that support the region's prolific marine ecosystem. CUBEnet's modeling environment provides prototype modeling applications that are supported by real-time observations of key coastal environmental variables. CUBEnet's Web accessible visualization tools provide parameter fields and vertical profiles from hydrodynamic models and field observations. Bedload sediment transport plays an important role in the evolution of rivers, marshes and deltas. In these aquatic environments, vegetation is widespread, and plant species have unique morphology. However, the impact of real plant morphology on flow and sediment transport has not been quantified. This study used model plants with real plant morphology, based on the aquatic species Phragmites australis, Acorus calamus and Typha latifolia. The frontal area of these species increases away from the bed, which leads to higher near‐bed velocity than would be predicted from depth‐average frontal area. A plant morphology coefficient was defined to quantify the impact of vertically‐varied plant frontal area. Laboratory experiments confirmed that the plant morphology coefficient improved the prediction of near‐bed velocity, near‐bed turbulent kinetic energy and bedload transport rate in canopies with realistic morphology. Plant morphology can alter transport rates by up to an order of magnitude, relative to the assumption of uniform morphology. Each vegetation species has a unique shape, but the impact of plant shape on sediment transport has not been previously investigated. This study explained how plant shape impacts sediment transport. Results show that differences in plant shape can change velocity and turbulence close to the channel bed, and thus alter sediment transport rate by an order of magnitude. Plants with greater vertical variation in shape, and specifically less plant volume near the channel bed, produced greater sediment transport. A parameter was defined to quantify the impact of plant shape on flow and sediment transport. By incorporating this parameter, our new model improves the prediction of sediment transport in vegetated regions. It is widely known that Infragravity (IG) waves induce cross-shore fluid motion in the nearshore, and multiple recent observational studies have identified IG waves as the dominant factor for a range of nearshore processes such as particle drift in the surf zone, transport of suspended sediment and river plume oscillations. While it is clear that the underlying orbital motion linked to IG wave excursions correlates with IG wave periods, the exact relation between the IG wave amplitude and the strength of the cross-shore motion has not been investigated in great detail. In the present contribution, we aim to quantify the cross-shore motion as a function of the IG wave amplitude. Indeed, it is shown that IG waves of even the most minute amplitude induce a large horizontal movement of particles, and the cross-shore movement is often several orders of magnitude larger than the particle movement induced by ordinary gravity waves. The results hold across a number of situations including monochromatic waves, sea states given by a spectrum as well as nonlinear waves with and without strong bathymetric forcing. This study investigates the influence of air exposure time on the erodibility of intertidal mud flats, emphasizing the role of evaporation in altering sediment strength and cohesion. Through a comprehensive approach combining laboratory experiments, fieldwork, and numerical modelling, it explores the dynamic interactions between sediment properties and environmental conditions. Storm-induced episodic sediment redistribution in coastal systems can reshape geomorphic bodies, disrupt ecosystems, and cause economic damage. However, cold-wave-storm-induced hydrodynamic changes and residual sediment transport in large, exposed subaqueous deltas, such as the Yangtze Delta, are poorly understood because it is typically expensive and difficult to obtain systematic field data in open coast settings during storm events. We conducted a successful field survey of waves, currents, changes in water depth, and turbidity at a station (time-averaged water depth of 20 m) in the offshore subaqueous Yangtze Delta over 10 days during winter, covering two storms and two fair-weather periods. During the storm events, strong northerly winds drove southward longshore currents (~0.2 m/s) and resulted in increased wave height and sediment resuspension, thereby leading to massive southward sediment transport. In contrast, both southward and northward transports were limited during the fair-weather periods. A better understanding of the storm-induced sediment transport can be obtained by using an approximately half-day lag in sediment transport behind wind force, given the time needed to form waves and longshore drift, the inertia of water motion, and the slow settling velocity of finegrained sediment. Our results directly support previous findings of southward sediment transport from the Yangtze Delta during winter, which is deposited in the Zhejiang-Fujian mud belt in the inner shelf of the East China Sea. In addition, the southward sediment transport from the Yangtze Delta occurs mainly during episodic storm events, rather than during the winter monsoon, and winter storms dominate over typhoons in driving southward sediment transport from the delta. This study highlights the importance of storms, especially during winter storms, in coastal sediment redistribution, which is of particular significance when considering the projected increase in storm intensity with global warming. The sediment transport along a coastal zone of Thermaikos Bay and the interaction with the coastline were studied in the present research. This study concerns the greater basin of an existing breakwater, for which the sand transport during the time periods 1950–1968 and 2009–2017, before and after the construction of the breakwater, were examined. The breakwater led to sand accumulation behind it, causing the well-known phenomenon of salient. It was revealed that climate change, in terms of wind conditions, significantly affected sediment transport; more specifically, the sand transport during 2009–2017 not only decreased significantly, but also changed its direction, in relation to 1950–1968. Based on the information obtained, technical interventions are proposed for the interception of sediment transport and the consequent accumulation of sand behind the breakwater. A numerical model is presented for ship-induced sediment transport, focusing on the fundamental role of propeller jet flow. The new module has been implemented in the open-source numerical model FUNWAVE in order to reproduce the effect of the propeller on sediment transport. Numerical simulations have been performed for both stationary and moving vessel cases, as well as for different values of propeller revolution speed. Numerical results are presented for the propeller-induced velocity field and the resulting morphological evolution of the seabed. Qualitative similarities are observed between the numerical results and literature experimental findings, showing the ability of the model to mimic complex morphodynamic processes induced by ship propellers. Compared to stationary vessel cases, smaller scour depths are generated in moving vessel cases. It is concluded that the effect of the propeller provides a major contribution to the mobilization and suspension of seabed sediment, and it should not be neglected in numerical models for ship-induced sediment transport. In this paper, an Eulerian two-phase-flow model sedFoam is extended to include an air phase together with the water and sediment phases. The numerical model called sedInterFoam is implemented using the open source library OpenFOAM. SedInterFoam includes the previous features of sedFoam for sediment transport modeling and also solves the air/water interface using the volume of fluid method coupled with the waves2Foam toolbox for free surface wave generation and absorption. Using sedInterFoam, four test cases are successfully reproduced to validate the free-surface evolution algorithm implementation, mass conservation of sediment and fluid phases, predictive capabilities and demonstrate its potential in modelling a broader range of coastal applications with sediment transport dominated by surface waves. As escalating environmental pressures threaten the world's beaches, understanding the driving factors influencing their geomorphological changes is of critical global importance. This study focuses on the morphological changes of Sigeng beach adjacent to Changhua River Mouth in Hainan Island, China through decadal monitoring of shoreline and profile topography and tries to illuminate the natural and anthropogenic factors that drove geomorphological changes. The results showed that Sigeng beach undergone significant changes between 2008 and 2024, with notable accretion at the northernmost and southernmost and general erosion at other sections. The shoreline change rates ranged between -18.4 m/yr and 13.0 m/yr, with the average rate of -1.9 m/yr, indicating overall erosion. The net longshore sediment transport (LST) rates along Sigeng beach was estimated through the combination of the cross-shore (profile) and longshore (shoreline) changes. The overall direction of net LST along the beach were southward, except for the northern section where the direction was northward due to the diffraction of NE waves by the long sand spit at the northernmost. The net LST rates at each profile varied from 0.8×104 m³/yr to 3.5×104 m³/yr. The main factors controlling Sigeng beach evolution, including seasonal wave action and reduction in fluvial sediment load, followed by sand spit and coastal structures, typhoon events, aeolian transport, and sea level rise, were discussed. Subsequently, adaptive protection measures, including beach nourishment, accompanied with groin system or multiple detached breakwaters were proposed to combat with beach erosion. The formation and dynamics of individual estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) in the Pearl River estuary (PRE) have been investigated but the temporal variability of the ETMs and interconnections among them remain poorly understood. To address these open questions, the distribution and transport of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the PRE for the period of 2017-2020 are investigated by numerical modeling. The simulated sediment transport flux is decomposed into several major components associated with specific physical processes. Then, the relative contribution of each component to the formation of the ETMs is evaluated. Results suggest the coexistence of three prominent ETMs in the Lingding Bay of the PRE. They are formed by different physical mechanisms and characterized by remarkable seasonality in the spatial extension. In the two ETMs located at the west shoal and middle shoal, advection dominates the sediment transport flux, whilst tidal pumping plays a crucial role in maintaining the ETMs. A sharp bathymetric gradient leads to an entrapment of sediment flux within the bottom layer in the west channel ETM, a phenomenon referred to as topographical trapping. The interconnection analysis shows that the sediment transport between the ETMs varies with seasons, which is attributed to the variation of stratification driven by the monsoon-mediated river runoff. Our results provide new insights into the physical dynamics and interconnections of the ETMs in the PRE, which can serve as scientific base for estuarine sediment management and engineering. In order to obtain the optimal geometric structure for sand transport in desert roads, this study fully utilizes the natural sand transport capacity of the desert roads, aiming to reduce occurrences of road damage due to sand burial. The research integrates Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with optimization analysis theory. Various typical geometric structures of desert highway roadbed were modeled using the Design Exploration module in CFD. Optimization analysis methods were employed to model and compute the sediment transport optimization design on both the roadbed and road surface. Then, the initial sample points are obtained by using the Design of Experiments (DOE), and the response surface is established by using the Kriging model to obtain the change trend of the input parameters and the objective function. Finally, the cross-section parameters of the sediment transport subgrade corresponding to different inflow conditions are obtained. The results show that the sediment transport performance of embankment, cutting and semi- filled uphill subgrade is negatively correlated with the height of subgrade. The relationship between slope gradient and sediment transport performance of subgrade depends on the height of subgrade and the type of subgrade section. For embankment and cutting, when the subgrade height is less than 0.5 m, the sediment transport performance of the subgrade is positively correlated with the subgrade slope; however, when the subgrade height exceeds 0.5 m, the sediment transport performance is negatively correlated with the subgrade slope. For the semi-filled uphill flow subgrade, the sediment transport performance of the subgrade is negatively correlated with the subgrade slope. Comprehensive analysis shows that semi-filled and excavated downhill subgrade has the best sand transport performance, embankment subgrade has the second highest sand transport capacity, then cutting subgrades, while semi-filled and excavated uphill subgrade has the worst sand transport performance. The research conclusions provide valuable scientific guidance for the design of sand control embankment structures tailored to local conditions for desert highways. Hydrogeomorphology studies river dynamics, focusing on the interactions between flow structure, sediment transport, and the morphologies that characterize rivers and their watersheds. It provides an analytical framework and tools for better integrating knowledge of river dynamics into river management in the broadest sense, and more specifically, into river restoration as well as into the assessment and prevention of risks associated with fluvial hazards. In Quebec, hydrogeomorphology is emerging as a significant contribution to risk assessment and management approaches, and is at the heart of a paradigm shift in river management whereby process restoration aims to increase the resilience of fluvial systems and societies, and improve the quality of fluvial environments. This contribution outlines the trajectory of hydrogeomorphology in Quebec, based on scientific publications by Quebec geographers, and discusses the discipline's aims in research and knowledge integration for river management. The present study evaluates the performance of two numerical approaches in estimating non-equilibrium scour patterns around a non-slender square structure subjected to a transient wave, by comparing numerical findings with experimental data. This study also investigates the impact of the structure's positioning on bed evolution, analyzing configurations where the structure is either attached to the sidewall or positioned at the centerline of the wave flume. The first numerical method treats sediment particles as a distinct continuum phase, directly solving the continuity and momentum equations for both sediment and fluid phases. The second method estimates sediment transport using the quadratic law of bottom shear stress, yielding robust predictions of bed evolution through meticulous calibration and validation. The findings reveal that both methods underestimate vortex-induced near-bed vertical velocities. Deposits formed along vortex trajectories are overestimated by the first method, while the second method satisfactorily predicts the bed evolution beneath these paths. Scour holes caused by wave impingement tend to backfill as the flow intensity diminishes. The second method cannot sufficiently capture this backfilling, whereas the first method adequately reflects the phenomenon. Overall, this study highlights significant variations in the predictive capabilities of both methods in regard to the evolution of non-equilibrium scour at low Keulegan–Carpenter numbers. Coastal erosion poses significant challenges to shoreline management, exacerbated by rising sea levels and changing climate patterns. This study investigates the influence of gap spacing between semicircular coastal defence structures on shoreline dynamics during storm events. The innovative design of these structures aims to induce a drift reversal of prevalent sediment transport while avoiding interruption of alongshore sediment drift, thus protecting the beach. Three different gap spacings, ranging from 152 m to 304 m, were analysed using the XBeach numerical model, focusing on storm morphodynamic behaviour. Methodologically, hydrodynamic and morphodynamic analyses were conducted to understand variations in significant wave heights adjacent to the structures, in accretion and erosion volumes, and changes in bed level under storm conditions. The study aims to elucidate the complex interaction between engineered coastal protection solutions and natural coastal processes, providing practical insights for coastal management practices. Results indicate that installing semicircular coastal defence structures influences sediment dynamics during storm events, effectively protecting stretches of the coast at risk. Optimal gap spacing between structures is crucial to mitigating coastal erosion and enhancing sediment accumulation, offering a sustainable shoreline protection approach. The findings underscore the importance of balanced location selection to optimize protection benefits while minimizing adverse morphological effects. Overall, this research contributes to advancing knowledge of hydro-morphological phenomena essential for effective coastal engineering and informs the design and implementation of more sustainable coastal protection strategies in the face of increasing coastal erosion and sea level rise challenges. Numerical modeling of wave transformation, hydrodynamics, and morphodynamics in coastal regions holds paramount significance for combating coastal erosion by evaluating and optimizing various coastal protection structures. This study aims to present an integration of numerical models to accurately simulate the coastal processes with the presence of coastal and harbor structures. Specifically, integrated modeling employs an advanced mild slope model as the main driver, which is capable of describing all the wave transformation phenomena, including wave reflection. This model provides radiation stresses as inputs to a hydrodynamic model based on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations to simulate nearshore currents. Ultimately, these models feed an additional model that can simulate longshore sediment transport and bed level changes. The models are validated against experimental measurements, including energy dissipation due to bottom friction and wave breaking; combined refraction, diffraction, and breaking over a submerged shoal; wave transformation and wave-generated currents over submerged breakwaters; and wave, currents, and sediment transport fields over a varying bathymetry. The models exhibit satisfactory performance in simulating all considered cases, establishing them as efficient and reliable integrated tools for engineering applications in real coastal areas. Moreover, leveraging the validated models, a numerical investigation is undertaken to assess the effects of wave reflection on a seawall on coastal processes for two ideal beach configurations—one with a steeper slope of 1:10 and another with a milder slope of 1:50. The numerical investigation reveals that the presence of reflected waves, particularly in milder bed slopes, significantly influences sediment transport, emphasizing the importance of employing a wave model that takes into account wave reflection as the primary driver for integrated modeling of coastal processes. Sand nourishments and groynes as coastal protection measures (CPM) address similar challenges on sandy coasts but take different approaches: while groynes are intended to reduce alongshore sediment transport and erosion, nourishments add new sediment to the system to compensate for erosion. The aim of this study is to compare the ecological effects of such measures on the vegetation. To this end, nutrient analysis and botanical mappings were carried out on a site with installed groynes, a site where sand nourishments are regularly carried out, and a control site without any CPM. In addition to an increase in nutrient availability after the sand nourishment, significant changes in plant species diversity and composition were also measured. The number of higher plants, mosses, and lichen species was lower at the nourishment site. The opposite impacts were observed at the groyne site: an increase in sediment cover by higher plants and mosses and a distinct increase in lichen species. The results suggest that groynes lead to a stabilization of the coastal system and enable dense vegetation growth. In contrast, sand nourishments lead to nutrient input and unstable habitat conditions, attracting certain plant communities but preventing the establishment of ground-covering vegetation. Cutting-edge technology for fluvial monitoring has revolutionised the field, enabling more comprehensive data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Traditional monitoring methods were limited in their spatial and temporal resolutions, but advancements in remote sensing, unmanned aerial systems (UASs), and other innovative technologies have significantly enhanced the fluvial monitoring capabilities. UASs equipped with advanced sensors enable detailed and precise fluvial monitoring by capturing high-resolution topographic data, generate accurate digital elevation models, and provide imagery of river channels, banks, and riparian zones. These data enable the identification of erosion and deposition patterns, the quantification of sediment transport, the evaluation of habitat quality, and the monitoring of river flows. The latter allows us to understand the dynamics of rivers during various hydrological events, including floods, droughts, and seasonal variations. This manuscript aims to provide an update on the main research themes and topics in the literature on the use of UASs for river monitoring. The latter is achieved through a bibliometric analysis of the publication trends and identifies the field's key themes and collaborative networks. The bibliometric analysis shows trends in the number of publications, number of citations, top contributing countries, top publishing journals, top contributing institutions, and top authors. A total of 1085 publications on UAS monitoring in rivers are identified, published between 1999 and 2023, showing a steady annual growth rate of 24.44%. Bibliographic records are exported from the Web of Science (WoS) database using a comprehensive set of keywords. The bibliometric analysis of the raw data obtained from the WoS database is performed using the R software. The results highlight important trends and valuable insights related to the use of UASs in river monitoring, particularly in the last decade. The most frequently used author keywords outline the core themes of UASs monitoring research and highlight the interdisciplinary nature and collaborative efforts within the field. "River", "topography", "photogrammetry", and "Structure-from-Motion" are the core themes of UASs monitoring research. Soil erosion monitoring is essential for the ecological evaluation and dynamic monitoring of land resources via remote sensing technology. In this paper, we provide new insights into the existing problems and development directions of traditional models, which are supported by new technologies. An important role is played by remote sensing information acquisition technology in the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of soil erosion, and the data and technical support provided are systematically reviewed. We provide a detailed overview of the research progress associated with empirical statistical models and physically driven process models of soil erosion, and the limitations of their application are also summarized. The preliminary integration of remote sensing data sources with high spatial and temporal resolution and new technologies for soil erosion monitoring enables the high-precision quantitative estimation of sediment transport trajectories, the watershed river network density, and the terrain slope, enhancing the accuracy of erosion factor identification, such as spectral feature recognition from erosion information, gully erosion feature extraction, and vegetation coverage estimation. However, the current erosion models, driven by algorithms and models, are not comprehensive enough, particularly in terms of the spatial feature extraction of erosion information, and there are limitations in the applicability and accurate estimation of such models. Slopes adjacent to the Bahamian carbonate platform revealed a large variety of depositional processes. In this study, we present a synthesis summarizing 109,000 km2 of bathymetric and reflectivity data with ∼7,900 km of seismic lines and 311 m of sediment cores that were obtained over the last 50 years. These data are used to develop a conceptual model of sedimentation patterns on Quaternary carbonate slope systems and their interaction with the adjacent shallow‐water carbonate platforms. Our data highlight that during the Quaternary, factors controlling large‐scale sedimentation on Bahamian slopes have numerous similarities as they have higher sedimentation rates during interglacials. At a small scale, every slope has its own characteristics that are contemporary controlled by two main characteristics: (a) facies on the adjacent shallow‐water platform, and (b) the impact of shallow‐ and deep‐water currents. Large‐scale tectonics influence sediment deposition as it determines the position of the islands and impacts platform facies distribution. Plain Language Summary: The factors that allow sediment to be exported from carbonate platforms to the deep‐sea need discussion. To gain a better understanding of the processes involved, the sedimentary archives of the slopes connected to these carbonate platforms are consulted. The sediments encountered vary and range from grains finer than 20 μm to coarse sandy sediments, a few millimeters in size. To understand the different processes that export those different types of sediment, we analyze various slopes of the Bahamas, a well‐known pure carbonate platform system. We used both numerical data (bathymetry, reflectivity, seismic) and sediment samples from this area and compared those records for the different Bahamian slopes. We highlighted that every slope displays a different sediment record; for every slope transect the adjacent platform facies together with deep‐sea processes (currents) determine the sediment distribution.
