Aims To quantify thoracic lymphatic burden in paediatric Fontan patients using MRI and correlate with clinical status. Methods and results Paediatric Fontan patients (<18-years-old) with clinical cardiac MRI that had routine lymphatic 3D T2 fast spin echo (FSE) imaging performed from May 2017 to October 2019 were included. 'Lymphatic burden' was quantified by thresholding-based segmentation of the 3D T2 FSE maximum intensity projection image and indexed to body surface area, performed by two independent readers blinded to patient status. There were 48 patients (27 males) with median age at MRI of 12.9 (9.4–14.7) years, time from Fontan surgery to MRI of 9.1 (5.9–10.4) years, and follow-up time post-Fontan surgery of 9.4 (6.6–11.0) years. Intraclass correlation coefficient between two observers for lymphatic burden was 0.96 (0.94–0.98). Greater lymphatic burden correlated with post-Fontan operation hospital length of stay and duration of chest tube drainage (r s = 0.416, P = 0.004 and r s = 0.439, P = 0.002). Median lymphatic burden was greater in patients with chylous effusions immediately post-Fontan (178 (118–393) vs. 113 (46–190) mL/m2, P = 0.028), and in patients with composite adverse Fontan status (n = 13) defined by heart failure (n = 3), transplant assessment (n = 2), recurrent effusions (n = 6), Fontan thrombus (n = 2), and/or PLE (n = 6) post-Fontan (435 (137–822) vs. 114 (51–178) mL/m2, P = 0.003). Lymphatic burden > 600 mL/m2 was associated with late adverse Fontan status with sensitivity of 57% and specificity of 95%. Conclusion Quantification of MR lymphatic burden is a reliable tool to assess the lymphatics post-Fontan and is associated with clinical status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE: This study aimed to 1) investigate the convergent and discriminant validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability of the Canadian English version of the Computer-Based instrument for Low motor Language Testing (C-BiLLT-CAN), and 2) explore feasibility of the C-BiLLT assessment for children with cerebral palsy (CP) and complex communication needs in the Canadian health care context. METHODS: Eighty typically developing children between 1.5 and 8.5 years of age completed the C-BiLLT-CAN, the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-IV (PPVT-4), the receptive language sub-test of the New Reynell Developmental Language Scales (NRDLS), and/or the Raven's 2. Correlations between raw scores were calculated for estimates of convergent and discriminant validity. Internal consistency was calculated for all items and separately for items pertaining to vocabulary and grammar. To calculate the standard error of measurement (SEM) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), 33 participants were re-tested with the C-BiLLT within three weeks. Feasibility was explored with nine participants with CP. RESULTS: C-BiLLT-CAN's convergent validity was good to excellent (Spearman's rho > 0.78) and discriminant validity was higher than hypothesized (Spearman's rho > 0.8). Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.96), test-retest reliability (ICC > 0.9), and measurement error (SEM < 5%) were excellent. The feasibility study could not be fully completed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Preliminary data demonstrated some technical and practical barriers for using the C-BiLLT in children with CP in Canada. CONCLUSION: The C-BiLLT-CAN showed good to excellent psychometric properties in a sample of typically developing children, indicating that it is an adequate test for measuring language comprehension in English-speaking Canadian children. Objective: To translate and validate the Child Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (CTFEQr17), assessing cognitive restraint (CR), uncontrolled eating (UE) and emotional eating (EE), among French-speaking Canadian young individuals.Design: Phase 1 comprised a translation and the evaluation of the comprehension of the questionnaire. Phase 2 comprised a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the evaluation of internal consistency (Cronbach's α), test-retest reliability (intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC)) and construct validity, including correlations among the CTFEQr17 and Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26), anthropometrics, dietary intake and diet quality.Setting: Primary and secondary schools, Québec City, Canada.Participants: Phases 1 and 2 included 20 (40 % boys, mean age 11·5 (sd 2·4) years) and 145 (48 % boys, mean age 11·0 (sd 1·9) years) participants, respectively.Results: Phase 1 resulted in the questionnaire to be used in Phase 2. In Phase 2, the CFA revealed that the seventeen item, three-factor model (CTFEQr17) provided an excellent fit. Internal consistency was good (Cronbach's α: 0·81-0·90). Test-retest reliability was moderate to good (ICC = 0·59, (95 % CI 0·48, 0·70), ICC = 0·78, (95 % CI 0·70, 0·84), ICC = 0·50, (95 % CI 0·38, 0·62) for CR, UE and EE, respectively). CR correlated with EAT-26 score (r = 0·43, P < 0·0001). UE and EE correlated negatively with BMI Z-scores (r = -0;·26, P = 0·003; r = -0;·19, P = 0·03, respectively). CR correlated with the proportion of energy intake from protein and diet quality (r = 0·18, P = 0·04; r = 0·20, P = 0·02, respectively).Conclusion: The CTFEQr17 is suitable to use among French-speaking Canadian young individuals. Current evidence regarding the protective effect of mouthguard use on symptom severity in children and adolescents who sustain sport-related concussions is insufficient to make clinical recommendations. To compare the association between mouthguard use and symptoms stratified by sex in the first 4 weeks after pediatric sport-related concussion. We hypothesized that mouthguard use would be associated with less severe symptoms. Prospective cohort study. Nine Canadian pediatric emergency departments (EDs). Children aged 5 to 18 years who were assessed within 48 hours of concussions sustained during a collision or contact sport. Injury characteristics were collected using the Acute Concussion Evaluation. The primary outcome measure was symptom score (range = 0–6), measured using age-appropriate versions (5–7, 8–12, or 13–18 years) of the Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory. The independent variable was time postconcussion (initial assessment and 1, 2, and 4 weeks). Of 1019 children (73% male; median [interquartile range] age = 13.43 years [11.01–15.27 years]), 42% wore a mouthguard at the time of injury. Male mouthguard users reported similar symptom scores in the ED (difference in Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory Δ scores [diff] = −0.07; 95% CI = −0.23, 0.09) and at weeks 1 (diff = −0.02; 95% CI = −0.18, 0.14), 2 (diff = −0.03; 95% CI = −0.19, 0.13), and 4 (diff = −0.13; 95% CI = −0.29, 0.04) compared with males who did not wear a mouthguard. Female mouthguard users described minimally higher symptom scores at week 1 compared with non-mouthguard users (diff = 0.29; 95% CI = 0.01, 0.56). In the ED, symptom scores were not different for females who wore a mouthguard and those who did not (diff = 0.22; 95% CI = −0.04, 0.48) or at weeks 2 (diff = 0.22; 95% CI = −0.06, 0.51) or 4 (diff = 0.08; 95% CI = −0.20, 0.36). Wearing a mouthguard at the time of injury was not associated with reduced acute or subacute symptoms after sport-related concussion in either males or females who were treated in the ED compared with those who did not wear a mouthguard. Athletes are still encouraged to wear mouthguards during sports because overwhelming evidence supports their use in preventing dental injuries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LINKages, a nonprofit organization, aims to bridge the gap between older and younger generations by building intergenerational programs for youth and older adults. The objective of this project was to explore the influence of the LINKages intergenerational program on: a) older adults’ affect and levels of engagement, and b) youth volunteers’ experiences of engagement and perceptions of older adults. An exploratory case study design was used to address the study objectives. Sixty-five residents from four residential care homes and 87 youth volunteers in the LINKages program participated. Data were collected over 7 months. Statistically significant improvements in students’ perceptions of older adults and their experiences of engagement were found following their participation in the LINKages program. Participation also resulted in positive benefits for residents based on their observed levels of engagement and positive affect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Aboriginal children experience challenges to their health and well-being, yet also have unique strengths. It has been difficult to accurately assess their health outcomes due to the lack of culturally relevant measures. The Aboriginal Children's Health and Well-Being Measure (ACHWM) was developed to address this gap. This paper describes the validity of the new measure.Methods: We recruited First Nations children from one First Nation reserve in Canada. Participants were asked to complete the ACHWM independently using a computer tablet. Participants also completed the PedsQL. The ACHWM total score and 4 Quadrant scores were expected to have a moderate correlation of between 0.4 and 0.6 with the parallel PedsQL total score, domains (scale scores), and summary scores.Results: Paired ACHWM and PedsQL scores were available for 48 participants. They had a mean age of 14.6 (range of 7 to 19) years and 60.4 % were girls. The Pearson's correlation between the total ACHWM score and a total PedsQL aggregate score was 0.52 (p = 0.0001). The correlations with the Physical Health Summary Scores and the Psychosocial Health Summary Scores were slightly lower range (r = 0.35 p = 0.016; and r = 0.51 p = 0.0002 respectively) and approached the expected range. The ACHWM Quadrant scores were moderately correlated with the parallel PedsQL domains ranging from r = 0.45 to r = 0.64 (p ≤ 0.001). The Spiritual Quadrant of the ACHWM did not have a parallel domain in the PedsQL.Conclusions: These results establish the validity of the ACHWM. The children gave this measure an Ojibway name, Aaniish Naa Gegii, meaning "how are you?". This measure is now ready for implementation, and will contribute to a better understanding of the health of Aboriginal children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
