Water seepage is the primary cause of stone carvings corrosion in karst caverns, which is typically treated with cement-based grout intervention. In this paper, long-term monitoring (more than 1 1/2 years) was carried out in Qinglin cave and Yanxia cave in Hangzhou, China, to quantitatively evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of ordinary Portland cement- and superfine cement-based grout intervention. Results showed that both materials were efficient in preventing water seepage, reducing it by half after the grout interventions. Grout intervention had obvious efficacy in blocking off the strong water seepage points, at the same time decreasing seepage differences among seepage points. Ion Chromatography results suggested that the concentrations of Ca2+, Cl− and SO42− in the seeped water in both caves increased after intervention, and the concentration of SO42− in the seeped water after superfine cement application in Qinglin cave was much more than that in the seeped water in Yanxia cave, where ordinary Portland cement was applied. Therefore, using superfine cement may bring more potential risks than ordinary Portland cement. However, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and conductivity analysis results presented that these ions seemly did not deposit on rock surfaces of the caves during the monitoring period.

In this study, ultra-fine spherical particles of silica fume and reactive ultra-fine fly ash were added to a mixture of commercial ultra-high-performance grout (UHPG) with the aim of enhancing the rheological properties, compressive strength, compactness, and permeability. This commercial UHPG study was conducted in collaboration with Triaxis Corporation (Changsha city, Hunan province, China). A water-to-binder ratio of 0.21 and a binder-to-fine aggregates ratio of 1.17 were used as fixed parameters, and the binders were a combination of type-II Portland cement, sulphoaluminate cement, silica fume, and reactive ultra-fine fly ash (RUFA). Polycarboxylate superplasticizer powder was used to control the rheology. The results revealed excellent compressive strength, volume stability, and resistance to chloride penetration. Mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy tests revealed that the medium-sized RUFA particles with small silica fume particles completely filled the spaces between large cement particles to achieve optimal densification. This mixture also produced dense hydration and calcium-silicate-hydrates colloids, which filled the microstructures of the UHPG resulting in excellent engineering properties and durability. This commercially available UHPG mix responded to excellent compressive strengths approaching 120 MPa and exhibited good workability with a loss of slump-flow rate up to 33% after 60 min. It also exhibited very low abrasion resistance (0.5%), stable shrinkage and expansion rates (stabilization over 10 days), very low chloride diffusion coefficient (less than 0.1 × 10−14 m2/s) with a denser microstructure. This commercial UHPG (UHPG-120) has been developed to meet the needs of the market.

This paper presents a method of utilising ilmenite MUD created during the production of titanium dioxide (TiO2) according to the sulphate method as an additive for Portland cement composites. After the production process, undissolved MUD was additionally rinsed with water and filtrated in the factory to make it more useful (R-MUD) for implementation and also to turn back some of the by-products of the production of TiO2. R-MUD is less hazardous waste than MUD. It has a lower concentration of sulphuric acid and some heavy metals. The rinsing process raised the concentration of SiO2, which is a valuable part of R-MUD because of its potential pozzolanic activity. This means that the R-MUD might be a reactive substitute of part of Portland cement in building composites. The article presents the results of research on the pozzolanic activity of R-MUD and other materials with proved pozzolanic activity, such as silica fume, fly ash and natural pozzolana (trass). Tests were performed using thermal analysis techniques. The tests showed that the pozzolanic activity or R-MUD after three days is at the same level as silica fume and after 28 days it is twice as high as the activity of fly ash. Beyond the 180th day of curing, R-MUD had the same level of activity as fly ash. The summary is supplemented by calorimetric tests, which confirm the high reactivity of R-MUD compared to other commonly used concrete additives, already in the initial hydration period. In summary, heat of hydration after 72 h of Portland cement with R-MUD is at the same level as the heat of hydration of Portland cement with silica fume and also pure Portland cement grout. The results confirm that the process of formation of micro-silica contained in R-MUD react with calcium hydroxide to form the C-S-H phase, which is responsible for the microstructure of cement composites.

This article considers semi-flexible composite (SFC) pavement materials made with reclaimed asphalt planings (RAP) and geopolymer cement-based grouts. Geopolymer grouts were developed and used to fill the internal void structure of coarse RAP skeletons with varying levels of porosity. The geopolymer grouts were formulated at ambient temperature using industrial by-products to offer economic and environmental savings relative to conventional Portland cement-based grouting systems. They were characterised on flowability, setting time, and compressive strength. The effect of grout and RAP on SFC material performance was evaluated using permeable porosity, compressive strength, and ultrasonic pulse velocity. SFC performance was significantly influenced by both grout type and RAP content. Improved performance was associated with mixtures of high-flowability/high-strength grout and low RAP content. A practical limitation was identified for combination of grout with low-flowability/fast-setting time and well-compacted RAP skeletons. Solids content exceeding 49% by volume was not feasible, owing to inadequate grout penetration. A suite of SFC materials was produced offering performance levels for a range of practical pavement applications. Preliminary relationships enabling prediction of SFC elastic modulus based on strength and/or ultrasonic pulse velocity test data are given. A pavement design is given using SFC as a sub-base layer for an industrial hardstanding.

Technetium-99 (99Tc) is an important radionuclide when considering the disposal of nuclear wastes owing to its long half-life and environmental mobility in the pertechnetate (Tc(VII)) redox state. Its behaviour in a range of potential cement encapsulants and backfill materials has been studied by analysing uptake onto pure cement phases and hardened cement pastes. Preferential, but limited, uptake of pertechnetate was observed on iron-free, calcium silicate hydrates (C–S–H) and aluminate ferrite monosulphate (AFm) phases with no significant adsorption onto ettringite or calcium aluminates. Diffusion of 99Tc through cured monolithic samples, representative of cements being considered for use in geological disposal facilities across Europe, revealed markedly diverse migration behaviour, primarily due to chemical interactions with the cement matrix rather than differential permeability or other physical factors. A backfill cement, developed specifically for the purpose of radionuclide retention, gave the poorest performance of all formulations studied in terms of both transport rates and overall technetium retention. Two of the matrices, pulverised fuel ash: ordinary Portland cement (PFA:OPC) and a low-pH blend incorporating fly ash, effectively retarded 99Tc migration via precipitation in narrow, reactive zones. These findings have important implications when choosing cementitious grouts and/or backfill for Tc-containing radioactive wastes.

[EN] A grouted connection (GC) is a hybrid connection which joins two telescoped steel tubes by filling the annulus between the steel tubes with grout. GCs are frequently used to enable a force fitted connection between piles and substructure of offshore wind turbines. At latticed substructures this connection is located at mudline level in wet ambient conditions (AC). Nowadays special grout materials are used to achieve not only best mechanical properties but also a good performance during grouting in offshore conditions.To reduce production costs the use of ordinary portland cement (OPC) is investigated as an alternative filling material within this paper. OPC has a much lower tendency to segregate, as there are no aggregates added. This leads to more simplified, stable and cheaper production processes offshore. Further focus is put on the failure mode of OPC filled GCs in submerged condtions.For an appropriate use of OPC offshore a feasible mechanical performance needs to be ensured. Investigating this, small and large-scale laboratory tests were performed at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Using the experimental test setup of previous investigations for special high performance grouts (HPG) [1, 2], enables a direct comparison of HPG and OPC. Documenting liquid and solid OPC properties, like slump flow and compressive strength confirms a stable material quality. Small-scale ULS-tests showed significantly lower ULS-capacities and a more brittle failing process compared to HPG. Lagre-scale tests confirmed the observed failure mechanisms of Schaumann and Raba for OPC filled GCs in submerged conditions [3]. Carried out tests showed significant influence of grout material and confirmed influence of grout annulus size on fatigue capacity., The presented results were achieved within the research project ‘GROWup - Grouted Joints for Offshore Wind Energy Converters under reversed axial loadings and upscaled thicknesses’ funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi, funding sign: 0325290). The purpose of this research was to investigate the grout properties of microfine Portland cement whose specific surface area was greater than those of the same kind products frequently cited in the relevant literature. In this regard, viscosity, setting time and stability of microfine cement suspensions were initially studied. It was seen that the sedimentation and the setting time increased but the viscosity decreased as the water/cement (W|C) ratio of microfine Portland cement suspensions increased. In addition, the penetrability of microfine Portland cement suspensions with different W|C ratios into various graded medium-to- fine sand specimens prepared at a relative density of 30% was tested under grouting pressures ranging from 0.25 to 0.5 MPa. It was observed that the penetrability of cement suspensions into the specimens was successful and increased as the W|C ratio increased. All grouted samples were kept in humidity room at a temperature of 20°C until testing time and subjected to permeability and unconfined compressive strength tests at different time intervals. The unconfined compressive strength decreased as the W|C ratio as well as the fine content of sand increased. Permeability tests conducted on grouted specimens with a period of two months revealed that they were impermeable. © 2015, Technical University of Budapest. All rights reserved.

Special foundations, most prominently micropiles and soil anchors, are frequently used in construction today. In Spain, the grout for these special technical applications is generally prepared with portland cement, although the codes and standards in place stipulate only the minimum compressive strength required, with no mention of cement type. Those texts also establish a range of acceptable water:cement ratios. In the present study, durability and compressive strength in cement grout prepared with blast furnace slag cement at different w/c ratios are characterised and compared to the findings for a reference portland cement grout. The results show that slag grout exhibits greater durability than the portland cement material and complies with the compressive strength requirements laid down in the respective codes. Actualmente es muy frecuente el empleo de cimentaciones especiales, entre las que destacan los micropilotes y los anclajes. En España, las lechadas de cemento para estos trabajos geotécnicos especiales se preparan habitualmente con cemento Portland, aunque las diferentes normativas al respecto no restringen el tipo de cemento a emplear, siempre que se alcance una determinada resistencia a compresión. Respecto a la dosificación de las lechadas, la normativa permite emplear diferentes relaciones agua/cemento dentro de un determinado rango. En vista de ello, en este trabajo se han caracterizado las propiedades de durabilidad y resistencia a compresión de lechadas de cemento preparadas con un cemento con escoria de alto horno y con diferentes relaciones a/c, tomando como referencia de comportamiento lechadas de cemento Portland. El uso de un cemento con escoria conlleva una mejora en la durabilidad de las lechadas, cumpliendo los requisitos de resistencia a compresión establecidos por la normativa.
