Wax printing is the most widely used method for fabricating microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), but it still suffers from disadvantages like discontinuation of wax printers and need for additional equipment for heating treatment. To address these issues, this work initially describes a new class of wax printing approach for high-precision, batch fabrication of μPADs using a household 3D printer. It only involves a one patterning step of printing polyethylene wax into rice paper body. Under optimized parameters, a fabrication resolution, namely the minimum hydrophilic channel width, down to ~189 ± 30 μm could be achieved. In addition, the analytical applicability of such polyethylene wax-patterned μPADs was demonstrated well with enhanced colorimetric detection of dopamine as a model analyte by combining metal-organic framework (MOF) based nanoenzymes (ZIF-67) with a smartphone (for portable quantitative readout). The developed nanosensor could linearly detect dopamine over a concentration range from 10 to 1000 μM, with a detection limit of ca. 2.75 μM (3σ). The recovery results for analyzing several real samples (i.e., pig feed, chicken feed, pork and human serum) were between 91.82 and 102.79%, further validating its good detection accuracy for potential practical applications in food safety and medical diagnosis. Aerogel composites reinforced by fibers have found extensive applications in the field of thermal insulation and energy conservation. However, the composites are hindered by their high infrared radiation transmittance and weak interface adhesion in practical applications. Herein, we designed and prepared a novel thin composite called 'fiber/whisker/aerogel paper' (SWAP) with a thickness of less than 1 mm. The SWAP integrated SiC nanowhiskers (SiC nw) as opacifiers and ultrafine SiO 2 fibers as reinforcement, fabricated through wet manufacturing and sol-gel process. The 'fiber/aerogel paper' (SAP) and SWAP exhibited low thermal conductivity at room temperature, measuring 0.025 W/(m·K) and 0.033 W/(m·K), respectively. Additionally, they exhibited low densities of 0.195 g/cm3 and 0.225 g/cm3, respectively. Notably, SWAP exhibited excellent high-temperature insulation performance, primarily due to its low infrared transmittance (50% at 3 μm). The incorporation of SiC nw and ultrafine SiO 2 fibers collectively enhanced the interfacial adhesion with the aerogel matrix even amidst rigorous testing (weight loss less than 3%). SWAP also demonstrated flexibility, high thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and flame resistance. Furthermore, a comprehensive investigation into the performance variations and influencing g factors of the material was conducted under different heat treatment conditions. The ZrO 2 fiber paper exhibits excellent thermal insulation properties, however, its limited mechanical strength and insufficient thermal stability hinder its widespread applications. The composite fiber papers, using mullite fibers possessing a high aspect ratio and exceptional thermal stability combined with ZrO 2 fibers, were fabricated via a vacuum-assisted filtration method. This method involved the successive stacking of composite fibers with alumina sol, using vacuum-induced directed water flow to create a layered structure reminiscent of nacre. The layered structure of the nacre, which demonstrates remarkable strength and hardness, has also served as a source of inspiration for the architectural design of the fiber paper. The tensile strength of pure ZrO 2 fiber paper was significantly enhanced by the addition of 7 wt% mullite fibers, resulting in a remarkable increase to 0.1805 kN/m. The paper exhibited exceptional resistance to bending, maintaining 96 % of its bending strength even after undergoing 100 cycles. The thermal shrinkage of the composite paper, containing 15 wt% mullite fibers, was reduced from 17.75 % observed in pure ZrO 2 fiber paper to a mere 1.32 % after undergoing heat treatment at a temperature of 1300 °C for 2 h. The composite paper, measuring 5 mm in thickness and consisting of 7 wt% compositions, displayed exceptional thermal insulation properties when exposed to a hot side temperature of 1370 °C. A procedure for making a wooden heat-insulating product for construction applications through lignin removing is presented in this paper. The non-conventional procedure is almost similar to that known and used in the pulp and paper industry, but the technological purpose is clearly different. The type of tree wood chosen by authors (Romanian spruce wood) is a novelty compared to the rather large list of tree species tested so far and represents the originality of the work. The liquid alkaline environment was constituted of NaOH, Ca(OH)2, and distilled water and this has activated the spruce wood waste. By removing lignin from the wood structure, heat conductance of the wooden material decreased by comparison with conductance of the same type of non-treated wood. The heat treatment temperature into an electric oven was 95 °C for 8 hours. The results showed the possibility to obtain a product with denseness value of 0.14 g⋅cm-3 and heat conductance of 0.030 W⋅m-1⋅K-1, i.e. very good insulation properties. The aim of this research work was to investigate the effect of thermal treatment on strength development of self-compacting mortars (SCMs) based on two pouzolanic materials: Natural Pozzolan and calcined paper waste sludge, were used in the binders of SCMs. To evaluate the effect of heat treatment, a serial of the specimens were exposed to room temperature and another serial were exposed to heating regime (at temperature 60°C for a period of 14 h). The fresh and hardened properties of all mortars were evaluated. the obtained result show that the mechanical strength at 14 days of all mortar treated are almost similar or sometimes better to those not treated mortars tested at 28 days, which reduces the curing time for precast elements.

Hydrothermal treatment of sludge within the pulp and paper industry can have a wide range of possible reactor solid loads for different sludge types. The objectives of this work were to determine the effect of reactor temperature and solid load on the properties of sludge hydrochar and to simulate hydrothermal treatment of sludge within a pulp and paper mill. Laboratory experiments were first performed within reactor temperature and solid load ranges of 180–260 °C and 10–50%, respectively, and the effects of sludge treatment were determined by comparing parallel mill-scale simulations. Based on the results, both reactor temperature and solid load had a statistically significant effect on the solid, ash, carbon and energy yields of sludge hydrochar. Increasing solid load minimized carbon dissolution to the liquid phase and increased the solid and energy yield of the attained hydrochar. According to mill-scale simulations in a 9 m 3 batch reactor, treating primary sludge alone produced an energy surplus of 22–36 GJ through char incineration, decreasing to 12–22 GJ and 3.4–9.1 GJ for mixed and secondary sludge, respectively. Mixing primary and secondary sludge reduced the overall energy surplus by 2–8% compared with treating the sludge streams separately in two reactors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a facile fabrication of free standing, highly conducting flexible reduced graphene oxide (rGO) paper by an evaporation-induced self-assembly process. The impact of heat treatment conditions on the structural, mechanical and electrical properties of rGO paper has been investigated. The effect of annealing temperature on the structural variations of GO (graphene oxide) and rGO papers was confirmed by X-ray diffraction studies. The removal of oxygen and other functional groups from the GO paper by heat-treatment process was confirmed using FTIR analysis. Raman spectra confirmed the effective control of defects in rGO paper by means of heat-treatment, which has also been inferred from the Raman mapping analysis. The morphology of rGO paper studied by FESEM emphasized the stacking of rGO layers. The electrical conductivity was significantly enhanced for 400 °C heat-treated rGO paper (4.82 × 10 S/cm) compared to the as-prepared GO paper (7 × 10 S/cm). The tensile strength of the rGO paper was also relatively higher than that of GO paper. The experimental results demonstrated that the present approach is simple and reducing agent free green approach for preparing large-area rGO paper with high electrical conductivity and mechanical flexibility. Abstract: A novel carbon paper has been prepared by pyrolysis from traditional Japanese paper called washi in Japan, which is mainly composed of cellulose microfibers. The washi was iodine-treated before pyrolysis. The effect of iodine-treatment on pyrolysis of the washi was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis. The structural and electrical properties of the carbon papers were also investigated using Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and resistivity measurements. The iodine-treatment prevents cellulose from thermally decomposing and is effective in increasing the carbon yield and retaining its fibrillar structure. Porous carbon papers consisting of many micro and nanofibrils were prepared by the pyrolysis of the iodine-treated washi at 800°C. Those prepared at 800°C and then heat-treated at higher temperatures than 1800°C show electrical conductivities of 3Scm−1 and 24–27Scm−1. The degree of crystallinity and the electrical conductivity of the papers are improved by the heat treatment at higher temperatures. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A facile and scalable method for the preparation of low‐density SiC foam from tissue paper and silicon powder is reported. The co‐dispersion of pulp‐containing tissue paper micro‐ribbons and silicon powder is coagulated by adjusting the pH to 3.5. The silicon particles adhere to the tissue paper micro‐ribbons during the coagulation. The coagulated co‐dispersion on filter‐pressing consolidates the silicon particle‐decorated tissue paper micro‐ribbons and orients them perpendicular to the filter‐pressing direction. The filter‐pressed body on drying followed by heat treatment at 1600°C in inert atmosphere produces SiC foam. The tissue paper micro‐ribbons retain their morphology during carbonization as well as high‐temperature reaction with the silicon. The enormous growth of carbon‐rich SiC nanowires is observed on the SiC micro‐ribbons. The random orientation of SiC micro‐ribbons in the X‐Y plane with the hairy nanowires on the surface and their stacking in the Z‐direction produces a porosity of ~94 vol.% with pore sizes in the range of 0.08 to 20 µm. The SiC foam shows a compressive strength and Young's modulus of 0.22 and 5.5 MPa, respectively. The thermal conductivity decreases from 0.11 to 0.07 W m−1 K−1 when temperature increases from 25°C to 350°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conventional paper-based wear-resistant materials employ thermosetting resin as the matrix, which are difficult to recycle, degrade, and reuse after scrapping, causing significant damage to the environment. The discovery of sustainable alternatives has the potential to transform the manufacture of paper-based wear-resistant materials into low-carbon production. Herein, inspired by spider webs sticking to insects, a paper-based self-lubricating material based on lignin-cellulose-graphene layered interwoven structure was prepared by lignin-cellulose assisted in-situ exfoliation of flake graphite strategy. Graphene adheres to the interlaced cellulose network, while lignin serves as a natural binder and matrix, resulting in a 2D interwoven structure. The paper-based film had a 37.4% greater average mechanical strength than pure lignin-cellulose film and a 56% lower toughness loss following heat treatment. The friction coefficient of the film-15% was 173.3% lower than that of the film-10%, and it maintained long-term stability with a low wear rate of 3.9 × 10−3 mm3/(N·m). Furthermore, the end-of-life products were recycled five times and can be degraded by microorganisms in moist soil within 40 days. The degradation products can provide nutrients for plant growth, indicating that it is a potential alternative to non-recyclable wear-resistant materials for light-duty transmission machinery. In situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles on paper sheets was achieved without any external reducing reagents and heat treatments. Surface-activated pulp fibers with carboxyl and aldehyde contents of 1.18 and 0.349 mmol g-1, respectively, which were obtained from softwood kraft pulp using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO), were fabricated into paper sheets with polyamideamine epichlorohydrin (PAE) resin with a papermaking technique. The TEMPO-oxidized pulp papers were flexible, lightweight, and easy to handle in a wet state due to the PAE-mediated reinforcement. Simple immersion of the white TEMPO-oxidized paper in an aqueous solution of tetrachloroauric acid at room temperature brought about distinct color change from white to red-purple, strongly suggesting the formation of gold nanoparticles. Post-oxidized aldehyde-free paper provided no color variation, and thus the aldehyde groups on pulp fibers made a significant contribution to the in situ synthesis of gold nanoparticles. The organic-inorganic paper materials of TEMPO-oxidized pulp and gold nanoparticles demonstrated the catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in an aqueous system. Abstract: In this study, we demonstrate up to 30% increase in power density of carbon paper electrodes for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) by introducing perforations into the structure of electrodes. A CO2 laser was used to generate holes ranging from 171 to 421 μm diameter, and hole densities from 96.8 to 649.8 holes cm−2. Perforation of the carbon paper electrodes was observed to improve cell performance in the activation region due to thermal treatment of the area around the perforations. Results also demonstrate improved mass transport, resulting in enhanced peak power and limiting current density. However, excessive perforation of the electrode yielded a decrease in performance due to reduced available surface area. A 30% increase in peak power density (478 mW cm−2) was observed for the laser perforated electrode with 234 μm diameter holes and 352.8 holes cm−2 (1764 holes per 5 cm2 electrode), despite a 15% decrease in total surface area compared to the raw un-perforated electrode. Additionally, the effect of perforation on VRFB performance was studied at different flow rates (up to 120 mL min−1) for the optimized electrode architecture. In the authors' previous studies, a bleaching process based on continuous chemical supplementation (CCS) was proposed to improve the effectiveness of peroxide bleaching of chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP). In this study, the kinetic model of the CCS process of peroxide bleaching was applied to poplar CTMP to explore how the bleaching rate was affected. The model was based on the rate of chromophore elimination characterized by the brightness gains of bleached pulp. The reaction rate of chromophore destruction proceeded via a rapid initial phase followed by a slow phase. The equation of reaction rate was confirmed. The value of reaction order was -3.62, and the activation energy was 288.8 kJ/mol. The developed kinetic model was a good fit for the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Electromagnetic shielding, resistance temperature-sensitive behavior, and interfacial electricity of RGO papers are provided. • The conductivity anisotropy verse temperature and pizeoresistivity of RGO papers at different are characterized. • A simple experimental approach to prepare graphene papers with remarkable electromagnetic shielding performance is provided. • A qualitative decoupling analysis method is provided for the study and analysis of interfacial electricity for RGO papers. Electromagnetic shielding behavior, resistance temperature-sensitive behavior, interfacial electricity, and their variations with heating treatment of the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) paper are of concern. Herein, self-assembling RGO papers were prepared by solution-phase deposition method. An electromagnetic shielding efficiency (EMSE) of 64 dB shielding (corresponding to a SE/Grammage of 7032 dB/(g/cm2)) covering X-band (8–12 GHz) were obtained. In addition, resistance temperature-sensitive behavior of RGO paper is investigated, and equivalent circuit model is established to decouple interface electricity. The relative resistance variations of RGO paper is caused by the temperature, and the value of ∆R/R 0 drops by around 36% when the RGO paper temperature increase from 200 °C to 800 °C. This graphene-based paper provides a simple experimental approach to prepare graphene papers with remarkable electromagnetic shielding performances. More importantly, a qualitative decoupling analysis method is provided for the study and analysis of interfacial electricity. With the growing significance of printed sensors on the electronics market, new demands on quality and reproducibility have arisen. While most printing processes on standard substrates (e.g., Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) are well-defined, the printing on substrates with rather porous, fibrous and rough surfaces (e.g., uncoated paper) contains new challenges. Especially in the case of inkjet-printing and other deposition techniques that require low-viscous nanoparticle inks the solvents and deposition materials might be absorbed, inhibiting the formation of homogeneous conductive layers. As part of this work, the sheet resistance of sintered inkjet-printed conductive silver (Ag-) nanoparticle cross structures on two different, commercially available, uncoated paper substrates using Van-der-Pauw's method is evaluated. The results are compared to the conductivity of well-studied, white heat stabilised and treated PET foil. While the sheet resistance on PET substrate is highly reproducible and the variations are solely process-dependent, the sheet resistance on uncoated paper depends more on the substrate properties themselves. In this paper, a CatBoost model for predicting superelastic strains of alloys was established by utilizing features construction and selection as well as model filtering and evaluation based on 125 existing data points of superelastic titanium alloys. The alloy compositions of a TiNbMoZrSnTa system were optimized and three nickel-free titanium alloys with potentially excellent superelastic properties were designed using the Bayesian optimization algorithm using a superelastic strain as the optimization target. The experimental results indicated that only Ti-12Nb-18Zr-2Sn and Ti-12Nb-16Zr-3Sn exhibited clear superelasticity due to the absence of relevant information about the alloys' β stability in the machine learning model. Through experimental optimization of the heat treatment regimens, Ti-12Nb-18Zr-2Sn and Ti-12Nb-16Zr-3Sn ultimately achieved recovery strains of 4.65% after being heat treated at 853 K for 10 min and 3.01% after being heat treated at 1073 K for 30 min, respectively. The CatBoost model in this paper possessed a certain ability to design nickel-free superelastic titanium alloys but it was still necessary to combine it with existing knowledge of material theory for effective utilization. Wind turbine blades are primarily composed of fiberglass composite, posing a significant recycling challenge for the wind energy industry. This paper introduces a novel recycling approach by comprehensively analyzing the pozzolanic reactivity of recycled powder as a new supplementary cementitious material (SCM). A systematic characterization using laboratory techniques is first described, establishing both the chemical and morphological properties of the powder and suggesting that the material was likely to be capable of acting as a pozzolan. The effects of thermal and mechanical processing on the reactivity characteristics of the material were elucidated using a suite of analytical and standardized characterization approaches. It was found that through heat treatment to remove impinging resin and subsequent mechanical processing to synthesize a fine powder, the reactivity of the material could be improved to an extent at which the performance characteristics of a conventional class F fly ash were closely matched. For instance, mortar containing 10% of thermally-mechanically processed powder achieves 95% of the 28-day strength of cement mortar. This paper opens the door for both the use of these materials to bolster dwindling supplies of supplementary cementitious materials, and to provide a much-needed reprocessing route for waste fiberglass which are otherwise highly challenging to dispose of cost-effectively. Replacing mathematical models with artificial intelligence tools can play an important role in numerical models. This paper analyses the modeling of the hardening process in terms of temperature, phase transformations in the solid state and stresses in the elastic-plastic range. Currently, the use of artificial intelligence tools is increasing, both to make greater generalizations and to reduce possible errors in the numerical simulation process. It is possible to replace the mathematical model of phase transformations in the solid state with an artificial neural network (ANN). Such a substitution requires an ANN network that converts time series (temperature curves) into shares of phase transformations with a small training error. With an insufficient training level of the network, significant differences in stress values will occur due to the existing couplings. Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks were chosen for the analysis. The paper compares the differences in stress levels with two coupled models using a macroscopic model based on CCT diagram analysis and using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov (JMAK) and Koistinen-Marburger (KM) equations, against the model memorized by the LSTM network. In addition, two levels of network training accuracy were also compared. Considering the results obtained from the model based on LSTM networks, it can be concluded that it is possible to effectively replace the classical model in modeling the phenomena of the heat treatment process. The paper presents an analysis of the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) properties of C45, X20Cr13, and 34CrNiMo6 steels subjected to various heat treatment processes. Strain-controlled LCF tests were carried out with a total cyclic strain amplitude equal to 0.5, 1 and 1.5%. Fatigue life, cyclic stress-strain behavior and hardness were analyzed. Qualitative and quantitative relationships between material LCF properties resulting from the heat treatment processes, were related to the indentation force P*, which was derived experimentally by applying an instrumented indentation procedure with the use of the Vickers indenter. The proposed parameter P* and its changes ΔP* seem to be promising for the identification of the structural stress parameter σ* that is necessary for deriving values of the fatigue strength coefficients σf' corresponding to different tempering temperatures. The common feature of all steels analyzed in this paper is that the elastic parts of the strain-life characteristics remain parallel after being subjected to different tempering temperatures. The cellular automata (CA) method has played an important role in the research and development of metallic materials. CA can interpret the microstructure changes of materials and obtain more abundant, accurate and intuitive information of microstructure evolution than conventional methods. CA can visually represent the process of grain formation, growth, development and change to us in a graphical way, which can assist us in analysis, thinking and solving problems. In the last five years, the application of CA in materials research has been rapidly developed, and CA has begun to occupy an increasingly important position in the simulation research of metallic materials. After introducing the advantages and limitations of CA compared to other widely used simulation methods, the purpose of this paper is to review the recent application progress on the microstructure simulation of metallic materials using CA, such as solidification, recrystallization, phase transformation and carbide precipitation occurring during forming and heat treatment. Specifically, recent research advances on microstructure simulation by CA in the fields of additive manufacturing, welding, asymmetrical rolling, corrosion prevention, etc., are also elaborated in this paper. Furthermore, this paper points out the future work direction of CA simulation in the research of metallic materials, especially in the simulation of the crystal structure, the prediction of mechanical properties, CA simulation software and rule systems, etc. These are expected to attract wide attention of researchers in the field of metallic materials and promote the development of CA in materials research. Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) process has a great ability to produce complex AlSi10Mg 3D components with uncommon degrees of freedom for broad span of applications in different industries. Presence of the microstructural imperfections such as porosity, dependent on the parameters of the process can be detrimental to the printed products for different engineering applications. Parameters of the process and different post-processing heat and surface treatments are recognized for decrease of the occurrence of microstructural defects and for the improvement of the mechanical properties. The influence of laser power by applying four different laser speeds at one layer thickness with a constant hatch distance, on the microstructure and microhardness of the AlSi10Mg alloy was examined in this paper. The goal of the research was to determine whether increasing the laser speed will have a significant impact on the change in microstructure and the appearance of porosity in the tested samples. The paper aims at documenting the material employed in 1942 for the fabrication of an exhaust valve for a Harley-Davidson WLA/WLC motorcycle and assesses the material features with modern steel standard specifications and treatment. Facing properties of the original historical parts of technical heritage objects according to modern standards is a rare discipline, as these objects are nowadays in collections of museums or private collectors and experimental instrumental analyses are strictly forbidden. In this case, a preserved accessible unused surplus replacement kit was studied. The microstructure was assessed by light optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron probe micro-analysis and by heat treatment–hardness correlation. It was found that the valve was made of Silchrome 1 steel in coherence with the X45CrSi9-3 steel modern material standard, but with a slightly higher content of phosphorus and sulfur. Microscopic observations and hardness profile testing suggested a tempered martensitic structure (sorbite) with very fine grains uniformly distributed in the valve and an even heat treatment. Heat treatment–hardness experimentation demonstrated that the original heat treatment cannot be achieved by the modern standard procedure. The tempering temperature was surprisingly deduced to be lower than the recommended one according to the modern standard, which contrasts with the service temperature indicated in the contemporary motorcycle mechanics handbook. In this paper, the microstructure of an alloy was regulated by means of strengthening solution aging, and microstructure observation and composition analysis were carried out by means of an optical microscope and X-ray diffractometer. Combined with the Vickers hardness tester, electronic universal testing machine and high-temperature persistent creep testing machine, the mechanical properties and high-temperature properties of the alloy were tested, and the strengthening mechanism of the alloy was explored. The results showed that the dendritic morphology and structure of the alloy decreased with an increase in temperature during the solution process, and the γ′ phase morphology also changed with the solution temperature: oval → cross → cubic. The γ′ phase after solid solution at 1295 °C was closest to the cubic form. Therefore, it is believed that the 1295 °C solution treatment had the best effect. In the aging process, the uniform cubic degree of γ′ phase distribution was the highest at 1090 °C. On the basis of fixed aging temperature (1090 °C), it was found that the volume fraction of the γ′ phase increased significantly after 8 h. The γ′ phase, which was closest to the cubic form, had the largest proportion of precipitation, and the volume fraction increased to 70.3%. The minimum carbide volume was 1.0%. The hardness of the alloy reached 435.8 HV; the yield strength increased to 280.1 MPa; and the durability of the alloy under the conditions of 1000 °C/230 MPa and 870 °C/655 MPa was 99.7 h and 42.7 h, respectively, which achieved the purpose of alloy design. The studied solar pot is a recent invention, which is made for environmentally friendly cooking or heating (by utilizing solar energy) of foods and liquids. Its structure is similar to a double pipe heat exchanger, it has an outer mantle and an inner cooking tank. The goals of the paper are proposing a new physically-based mathematical model describing the solar pot and carrying out computer experiments with it, assembling an experimental system of the pot connected with a solar collector and performing measurements on it. Based on the results, the solar pot can successfully be used for cooking or sterilizing foods or liquids during the studied time period, in Hungary. In particular, based on measured data, the temperature level needed for heat treatment (75 °C) can be maintained in the cooking tank for several hours (~5 h, on the average) in a typical day in May. In this paper, enhancing the tribological characteristics of novel cast metallic materials—hybrid multi-component cast irons—by applying a strengthening heat treatment is described. The experimental materials were the cast alloys of a nominal composition (5 wt.% W, 5 wt.% Mo, 5 wt.% V, 10 wt.% Cr, 2.5 wt.% Ti, Fe is a balance) supplemented with 0.3–1.1 wt.% C and 1.5–2.5 wt.% B (total of nine alloys). The heat treatment was oil-quenching followed by 200 °C tempering. The quench temperature (QT) varied in the range of 900–1200 °C, with a step of 50 °C (with a 2-h holding at QT). The correlation of the QT with microstructure and properties was estimated using microstructure/worn surface characterization, differential scanning calorimetry, hardness measurement, and three-body-abrasive wear testing (using Al2O3 particles). The as-cast alloys had a multi-phase structure consisting of primary and/or eutectic borocarbide M2(B,C)5, carboborides M(C,B), M7(C,B)3, M3(C,B), and the matrix (ferrite, martensite, pearlite/bainite) in different combinations and volume fractions. Generally, the increase in the quenching temperature resulted in a gradual increase in hardness (maximally to 66–67 HRC) and a decrease in the wear rate in most alloys. This was due to the change in the phase-structure state of the alloys under quenching, namely, the secondary carboboride precipitation, and replacing ferrite and pearlite/bainite with martensite. The wear rate was found to be inversely proportional to bulk hardness. The maximum wear resistance was attributed to QT = 1150–1200 °C, when the wear rate of the alloys was lowered by three to six times as compared to the as-cast state. With the QT increase, the difference in the wear rate of the alloys decreased by three times. The highest abrasive resistance was attributed to the alloys with 1.1 wt.% C, which had a 2.36–3.20 times lower wear rate as compared with that of the reference alloy (13 wt.% Cr cast iron, hardness of 66 HRC). The effects of carbon and boron on hardness and wear behavior are analyzed using the regression models developed according to the factorial design procedure. In this paper, the effect of thermomechanical treatment process on the hardening behavior, grain microstructure, precipitated phase, and tensile mechanical properties of the new high-strength and high-ductility Al-10.0Zn-3.0Mg-2.8Cu alloy was studied, and the optimal thermomechanical treatment process was established. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms were revealed, which provided technical and theoretical guidance for the engineering application of this kind of high strength-ductility aluminum alloy. Al-10.0Zn-3.0Mg-2.8Cu alloy cylindrical parts with external longitudinal reinforcement were prepared by a composite extrusion deformation process (reciprocal upsetting + counter-extrusion) with a true strain up to 2.56, and the organizational evolution of the alloys during the extrusion deformation process and the influence of pre-stretching treatments on the subsequent aging precipitation behaviors and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that firstly, the large plastic deformation promotes the fragmentation of coarse insoluble phases and the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization, which results in the elongation of the grains along the extrusion direction, and the volume fraction of recrystallization reaches 42.4%. Secondly, the kinetic study showed that the decrease in the activation energy of precipitation increased the nucleation sites, which further promoted the diffuse distribution of the second phase in the alloy and a higher number of nucleation sites, while limiting the coarsening of the precipitated phase. When the amount of pre-deformation was increased from 0% to 2%, the size of the matrix precipitated phase decreased from 5.11 μm to 4.1 μm, and when the amount of pre-deformation was increased from 2% to 7%, the coarsening of the matrix precipitated phase took place, and the size of the phase increased from 4.1 μm to 7.24 μm. The finalized heat treatment process for the deformation of the aluminum alloy tailframe was as follows: solution (475 °C/3 h) + 2% pre-stretching + aging (120 °C/24 h), at which the comprehensive performance of the alloy was optimized, with a tensile strength of 634.2 MPa, a yield strength of 571.0 MPa, and an elongation of 15.2%. The alloy was strengthened by both precipitation strengthening and dislocation strengthening. After 2% pre-stretching, the fracture surface starts to be dominated by dense tough nest structure, and most of them are small tough nests, and small and dense tough nests are the main reason for the increase in alloy toughness after 2% pre-stretching deformation. In this paper, the crystallization behavior of 50ZnO:47B2O3:3Nb2O3:0.5Eu2O3 (G-0 h) glass has been investigated in detail by DSC, XRD and TEM analysis. The luminescent properties of the resulting glass-ceramics were also investigated. By XRD and TEM analysis, crystallization of several crystalline phases has been proved (α-Zn3B2O6, β-Zn3B2O6 and ZnNb2O6). By calculating crystal parameters, it was found that europium ions are successfully incorporated in the β-Zn3B2O6. Photo-luminescent spectra showed increased emission in the resulting glass-ceramic samples compared to the parent glass sample due to higher asymmetry of Eu3+ ions in the obtained crystalline phases. It was established that the optimum emission intensity is registered for glass-ceramic samples obtained after 25 h heat treatment of the parent glass. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To overcome the problem of Cr2O3 and Al2O3 inclusions in CuCr50 alloy prepared by aluminothermic reduction method, in this paper, a novel methodology for strengthening metal–slag separation through in situ slagging is proposed. CuCr50 alloys were prepared by metallothermic reduction using Al and Al-Mg as reducing agents, and the physical properties of the slag, such as viscosity, density, and surface tension, were adjusted by controlling the proportion of CaO in the slagging agent in the raw material to achieve good separation of the slag–metal. The results show that with the ratio of CaO increased, CaO and MgO were coupled to make slag, which combined with Cr2O3 and Al2O3 to form CaCr2O4, MgCr2O4, and CaAl4O7 in the slag, thus reducing the content of impurities in the alloy. When RCaO/(CaO + Al2O3 + MgO) = 20%, the Cr content ranged from 46.61% to 47.09%, the inclusions accounted for 1.60%, the Cr particle size was refined to 20 µm, the number of Cr spherical crystals accounted for 9.88%, the conductivity reached 14.96 MS/m, and the hardness reached 100.23 HB. After heat treatment, the Cr phase was refined in the alloy, the conductivity increased from 14.96 MS/m to 18.27 MS/m, and the hardness increased from 100.23 HB to 103.1 HB. The growing use of aluminum and its compounds has increased the volume of aluminum waste. To mitigate environmental impacts and cut down on manufacturing expenses, extensive investigations have recently been undertaken to recycle aluminum compounds. This paper outlines the outcomes of a study on fabricating standard EN AW-2007 alloy using industrial and secondary scrap through continuous casting. The resultant recycled bars were analyzed for their chemical makeup and examined for microstructural features in both the cast and T4 states, undergoing mechanical property evaluations. The study identified several phases in the cast form through LM, SEM + EDS, and XRD techniques: Al7Cu2Fe, θ-Al2Cu, β-Mg2Si, Q-Al4Cu2Mg8Si7, and α-Al15(FeMn)3 (SiCu)2, along with Pb particles. Most primary intermetallic precipitates such as θ-Al2Cu, β-Mg2Si, and Q-Al4Cu2Mg8Si7 dissolved into the α-Al solid solution during the solution heat treatment. In the subsequent natural aging process, the θ-Al2Cu phase predominantly emerged as a finely dispersed hardening phase. The peak hardness achieved in the EN AW-2007 alloy was 124.8 HB, following a solution heat treatment at 500 °C and aging at 25 °C for 80 h. The static tensile test assessed the mechanical and ductility properties of the EN AW-2007 alloy in both the cast and T4 heat-treated states. Superior strength parameters were achieved after solution heat treatment at 500 °C for 6 h, followed by water quenching and natural aging at 25 °C/9 h, with a tensile strength of 435.0 MPa, a yield strength of 240.5 MPa, and an appreciable elongation of 18.1% at break. The findings demonstrate the feasibility of producing defect-free EN AW-2007 alloy ingots with excellent mechanical properties from recycled scrap using the continuous casting technique. Laser powder bed-fused Ti6Al4V alloy has numerous applications in biomedical and aerospace industries due to its high strength-to-weight ratio. The brittle α′-martensite laths confer both the highest yield and ultimate tensile strengths; however, they result in low elongation. Several post-process heat treatments must be considered to improve both the ductility behavior and the work-hardening of as-built Ti6Al4V alloy, especially for aerospace applications. The present paper aims to evaluate the work-hardening behavior and the ductility of laser powder bed-fused Ti6Al4V alloy heat-treated below (704 and 740 °C) and above (1050 °C) the β-transus temperature. Microstructural analysis was carried out using an optical microscope, while the work-hardening investigations were based on the fundamentals of mechanical metallurgy. The work-hardening rate of annealed Ti6Al4V samples is higher than that observed in the solution-heat-treated alloy. The recrystallized microstructure indeed shows higher work-hardening capacity and lower dynamic recovery. The Considère criterion demonstrates that all analyzed samples reached necking instability conditions, and uniform elongations (>7.8%) increased with heat-treatment temperatures. Metal manufacturing processes based on deformation (forging, rolling) result in a fine grain structure with a complex dislocation substructure, which positively influence mechanical properties. Casting and additive manufacturing (powder- or wire-based) usually produce a coarse grain structure with a poorly developed dislocation substructure, which negatively affect mechanical properties. Heat treatment may alter phase balance and stimulate precipitation strengthening; however, precipitation kinetics depends on the dislocation substructure. In this paper, a comparative study of the microstructure and strength is presented for Monel K500 alloy containing 63 Ni, 30 Cu, 2.0 Mn, and 2.0 Fe (wt.%), and microalloyed with Al, Ti, and C hot-rolled to a round bar and deposited on a round surface using wire additive manufacturing (WAAM) technology. An increased dislocation density and number density of fine precipitates resulted in 8–25% higher hardness and 1.8–2.6 times higher compression yield stress in the hot-rolled alloy compared to these in the WAAM-produced alloy. However, due to a high work hardening rate, only 3–10% cold deformation was necessary to increase the strength of the WAAM alloy to this of the hot-rolled one. Age hardening heat treatment, through the intensification of the precipitation strengthening mechanism, reduced the value of cold deformation strain required to equalise the properties. Based on the obtained results, a new technology consisting of additive manufacturing, heat treatment, and cold deformation can be proposed. Cemented carbide is often used as the pick-tip material for conical picks. The pick-tip often experiences premature failure due to insufficient toughness. This paper aims to improve the impact toughness of cemented carbide through electromagnetic coupled cryogenic treatment. A theoretical model between process parameters and impact toughness is established. The optimal parameters are determined as follows: a cryogenic temperature of −190 °C, cryogenic time of 24 h, magnetization intensity of 1.5 T, and magnetization time of 15 s. The treatment improves the impact toughness by 11.39% compared with the heat treatment. As a subserie of the dental ceramic material family, glass–ceramics are favored for their excellent aesthetic properties. The feasibility of current commercially available dental glass–ceramics applications has been proven, while the assurance and development of more functional properties for them are still being explored. Effective utilization of various modification mechanisms by adjusting the chemical composition and microstructure is essential to improve the mechanical properties, aesthetic properties, and other properties such as biocompatibility of dental restorative materials. Among them, the mechanical properties of restorations should take into account the mechanical properties of glass ceramics and the final restoration (restoration and tooth set) in the mechanical behavior. This paper provides an overview of the chemical composition design, classification of microstructure, property requirements, and strengthening methods applied to dental glass–ceramics, including ion exchange, chain effects, heat treatment modulation, and strengthening mechanisms. In addition, research on traditional hot pressing, subtractive manufacturing, and newly developed additive manufacturing in glass–ceramics are systematically presented. Induction surface hardening (ISH) processes are widely used in the heat treatment of numerous industrial components, especially in the automotive industry. Since this industry operates under very demanding quality standards, it is crucial for these heat treatment processes to meet rigorous specifications to ensure the safety and reliability of the produced components. This implies the precise and repeatable control of certain parameters throughout the manufacturing process of each of the parts treated, through precise and reliable instrumentation in electromagnetically harsh environments. The main objective of this work is to define the monitoring process for an industrial IHS application, determining the control needs and the methods of measurement, recording, and verification of the parameters that ensure the quality of the process. This paper describes the monitoring process of induction surface hardening, emphasizing the use of sensors and modern measurement and control systems. This paper evaluates the effect of stress-relieving heat treatment on the AlSi10Mg alloy prepared by additive manufacturing using the Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) with print parameters: 370 W, 1400 m/s, and 50 μm. The as-built state and four different annealing modes (240 °C/2 h, 240 °C/6 h, 300 °C/2 h, and 300 °C/2 h/water-quenched) are investigated. To determine the effect of the annealing mode on the mechanical properties of the L-PBF AlSi10Mg alloy, heat-treated samples were compared with the as-built state and with each other. The mechanical properties of the samples were determined by tensile and hardness tests. The strength in the as-built state is 488 MPa, depending on the method of heat treatment, the strength values range from 296 MPa to 417 MPa, and the HV10 hardness values are in accordance with the measured strength values. Furthermore, the microstructure of the samples was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, which was then linked to the measured mechanical properties. The composition of the microstructure of the alloy and its influence on the mechanical properties were determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. Furthermore, the differences between the individual heat treatments in comparison with the as-built state were analyzed and the phenomenon of decomposition of the silicon network after reaching specific temperatures was discussed and confirmed. The paper evaluates the effect of dwelling time on stress relief annealing. It was found that if annealing at intermediate temperatures of 240 and 300 °C is applied, changes in structure and mechanical properties are more temperature- than dwell-time-dependent. The differences in physical properties, chemical properties, and mechanical properties between reclaimed concrete aggregate and natural aggregate are discussed in this paper. In this paper, the commonly used improvement techniques of recycled concrete aggregate are reviewed. Physical modification involves peeling the attached mortar layer using mechanical and thermodynamic means, including mechanical grinding and shaping, heat treatment, and microwave or electric pulse treatment. Chemical modification is based on the chemical reaction of some materials with recycled aggregate attached mortar, including acid treatment removal, water glass strengthening, carbonation strengthening, inorganic slurry strengthening, and polymer strengthening. Microbial modification is mainly based on the metabolic activity of specific microorganisms that induce carbon deposition modification. The results show that the reinforced technology of recycled aggregate has made some progress in improving the performance of recycled aggregate, but there are still some problems, such as inconsistent strengthening effects and the unstable compatibility of composite materials. In this paper, future research directions, such as the development of new strengthening materials and the integration of multi-functional strengthening technology, are described in order to provide some theoretical support for the utilization of recycled concrete aggregate. There is a long process to transform bauxite, a critical raw material, into a substance with the required properties of cast aluminum alloys for use in electro automotive parts. Thanks to its unique properties, aluminum has become the material of choice for clean technology manufacturers in applications such as use in the automotive industry, renewable energy, batteries, electrical systems, resource-saving packaging, energy efficient buildings and clean mobility. Restructuring of the economy, the oil crisis, air pollution and global warming are some of the factors that have moved the automotive industry towards electrification since the beginning of the 21st century. 17-4PH Stainless Steel is a mechanically high-performing alloy that is widely used across chemical and mechanical processing industries. The alloy is conventionally fabricated by cast methods, but emerging additive manufacturing techniques are presently offering an economic, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative. Bound Powder Extrusion (BPE) is a relatively new additive manufacturing technique that is used to fabricate three-dimensional, free-form components. Investigation into the mechanical properties and behavior of 17-4PH stainless steel fabricated by BPE is vital to understanding whether this technique proposes a competitive substitute to the cast alloy within industry. Published literature has investigated the as-fabricated mechanical properties, microstructure, porosity, and post-processing heat treatment of the BPE alloy, with limited comparison evident among the papers. This paper, therefore, aims to review published findings on the mechanical properties of 17-4PH stainless steel produced by additive manufacturing techniques, with a key focus on BPE. It is important to highlight that this review study focuses on the MetalXTM 3D printer, manufactured by Markforged. This printer is among the widely utilized BPE 3D printers available in the market. The key results, together with the impact of post-heat treatments, were discussed and compared to provide a more comprehensive picture of the patterns that this alloy presents in terms of its microstructure and mechanical properties. This enables the manufacture of components relative to desired material performance, improving overall functionality. A comparison of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), Young's modulus, ductility, and hardness was made relative to microstructure, porosity, and density of published literature for the as-fabricated and post-heat-treated states, identifying areas for further research. To improve the properties of mesoporous carbon (MC), used as a catalyst support within electrodes, MC fibers (MCFs) were successfully synthesized by combining organic–organic self-assembly and electrospinning deposition and optimizing heat treatment conditions. The pore structure was controlled by varying the experimental conditions. Among MCFs, MCF-A, which was made in the most acidic condition, resulted in the largest pore diameter (4–5 nm), and the porous structure and carbonization degree were further optimized by adjusting heat treatment conditions. Then, since the fiber structure is expected to have an advantage when MCFs are applied to devices, MCF-A layers were prepared by spray printing. For the resistance to compression, MCF-A layers showed higher resistance (5.5% change in thickness) than the bulk MC layer (12.8% change in thickness). The through-plane resistance was lower when the fiber structure remained more within the thin layer, for example, +8 mΩ for 450 rpm milled MCF-A and +12 mΩ for 800 rpm milled MCF-A against the gas diffusion layer (GDL) 25BC carbon paper without a carbon layer coating.
