Energy efficiency and renewable energy are the two main research topics for sustainable energy. In the past ten years, countries around the world have invested a lot of manpower into new energy research. However, in addition to new energy development, energy efficiency technologies need to be emphasized to promote production efficiency and reduce environmental pollution. In order to improve power production efficiency, an integrated solution regarding the issue of electric power load forecasting was proposed in this study. The solution proposed was to, in combination with persistence and search algorithms, establish a new integrated ultra-short-term electric power load forecasting method based on the adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and back-propagation neural network (BPN), which can be applied in forecasting electric power load in Taiwan. The research methodology used in this paper was mainly to acquire and process the all-day electric power load data of Taiwan Power and execute preliminary forecasting values of the electric power load by applying ANFIS, BPN and persistence. The preliminary forecasting values of the electric power load obtained therefrom were called suboptimal solutions and finally the optimal weighted value was determined by applying a search algorithm through integrating the above three methods by weighting. In this paper, the optimal electric power load value was forecasted based on the weighted value obtained therefrom. It was proven through experimental results that the solution proposed in this paper can be used to accurately forecast electric power load, with a minimal error. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes two machine learning techniques applied to predict liquefaction susceptibility of soil based on the standard penetration test (SPT) data from the 1999 Chi-Chi, Taiwan earthquake. The first machine learning technique which uses Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based on multi-layer perceptions (MLP) that are trained with Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation algorithm. The second machine learning technique uses the Support Vector machine (SVM) that is firmly based on the theory of statistical learning theory, uses classification technique. ANN and SVM have been developed to predict liquefaction susceptibility using corrected SPT [(N1)60] and cyclic stress ratio (CSR). Further, an attempt has been made to simplify the models, requiring only the two parameters [(N1)60 and peck ground acceleration (αmax/g)], for the prediction of liquefaction susceptibility. The developed ANN and SVM models have also been applied to different case histories available globally. The paper also highlights the capability of the SVM over the ANN models. Abstract: Stock price variation predictions are at the core of many research issues, and neural networks (NNs) are widely applied and were proven to be more efficient than time series forecasting for stock price forecasting. However, this type of research always determines the parameter settings of the NNs rationally through a trial-and-error methodology. This paper integrates design of experiment (DOE), Taguchi method, and back-propagation NN (BPNN) to construct a robust engine to further optimize the prediction accuracy under a robust DOE-based predictor. Adopting data from Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE), the technical analytical indexes and β value of the listed stocks of TWSE were computed. The research results indicated that the proposed approach can effectively improve the forecasting rate of stock price variations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Under limited resources in corporation education training, to enhance human resources quality, making education training program planning more efficient is a significant issue in training future talents. In accordance with Taiwan TrainQuali System (TTQS), the basic training structure is ton specify P (Plan) and D (Design). Ensuing results will be easier and successful. From TTQS database of Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training, corporations in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli winning Gold Medals (Group B) have gaps outside control line in P and D. Enhancement is needed in the gap. The paper aims at a certain company winning Gold Medals in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli to locate hidden or unobvious information with data mining, which will help future education training course planning and design. The researchers use two-stage clustering (SOM and K-means) under data mining theory to collect personnel training data of Automobile Corporation A in Taiwan and China with data mining and analysis. The results under the two algorithms will serve as reference for future education training courses. In the end, in combination of back-propagation neural network to develop education training prediction model, the research offers reference for writing knowledge management system to enhance effects of personnel participation in training at corporations. Abstract: Accurate predictions of storm surge and surge deviation are essential for industrial activities in coastal areas. Usually numerical hydrodynamic models or empirical methods are used to estimate the storm surge. This paper proposes an alternative back-propagation neural network (BPN) approach to forecast the storm surge and surge deviation. The prediction of storm surge from a previous typhoon is used as a training set to form predictions for the next event. Wind velocity, wind direction, atmospheric pressure and astronomical tide were selected as inputs in the neural network. The observations obtained during three typhoons from four stations in Taiwan were used to illustrate performance of the BPN model. Comparisons with numerical methods indicate that the storm surge and surge deviation can be efficiently predicted using BPN. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: It is essential to forecast the variation of storm surge in coastal areas during the typhoon attacks. Conventional investigations of storm surge often used the method of numerical hydrodynamic models or empirical formula. In this paper, the back-propagation neural network (BPN) is applied to predict the short-term typhoon surge and surge deviation in order to overcome the problem of exclusive and nonlinear relationships. The observations obtained during three typhoons of Taichung harbor in Taiwan are verified by the present model. From the comparison with numerical methods, it can be found that the short-term storm surge and surge deviation can be efficiently predicted 1 to 6h ahead using BPN. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
