Understanding the characteristics of the raindrop size distribution (DSD) is crucial to improve our knowledge of the microphysical processes of precipitation and to improve the accuracy of radar quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE). In this study, the spatial variability of DSD in different regions of Beijing and its influence on radar QPE are analyzed using 11 disdrometers. The DSD data are categorized into three regions: Urban, suburban, and mountainous according to their locations. The DSD exhibits evidently different characteristics in the urban, suburban, and mountain regions of Beijing. The average raindrop diameter is smaller in the urban region compared to the suburban region. The average rain rate and raindrop number concentration are lower in the mountainous region compared to both urban and suburban regions. The difference in DSD between urban and suburban regions is due to the difference in DSD for the same precipitation types, while the difference in DSD between mountain and plains (i.e., urban and suburban regions) is the combined effect of the convection/stratiform ratio and the difference of DSD for the same precipitation types. Three DSD-based polarimetric radar QPE estimators were retrieved and estimated. Among these three QPE estimators, R(ZH), R(Kdp), and R(Kdp, ZDR), R(Kdp, ZDR) performs best, followed by R(Kdp), and R(ZH) performs worst. R(Kdp) is more sensitive to the representative parameters, while R(ZH) and R(Kdp, ZDR) are more sensitive to observational error and systematic bias (i.e., calibration). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the characteristics of quasi-two-day wave (QTDW) using the meridional wind in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) obtained from a meteor radar over Kototabang (KB, 0.2 ° S, 100.3 ° E) from 2003 to 2012. Atmospheric oscillations have a crucial impact on atmospheric dynamics, which contributes to more accurate space weather forecasting, thus providing a more secure space environment for human space exploration activities such as remote sensing and satellite navigation. QTDWs are typical atmospheric oscillations in the upper stratosphere, mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The occurrence time, amplitudes, periods and vertical wavelengths of QTDW events are analyzed statistically. Data obtained from the TIMED Doppler Interferometer (TIDI), which can measure wind and temperature and is onboard the Thermosphere, Ionosphere, Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) satellite, are used to analyze the global distribution and spatial structure of QTDWs with different zonal wavenumbers. The characteristics of the QTDWs over KB are compared with the QTDWs at the middle latitudes using the meridional wind data from a meteor radar over Wuhan (114.4 ° E, 30.6 ° N), Beijing (116.5 ° E, 39.9 ° N) and Mohe (121.1 ° E, 50.1 ° N). The amplitudes of the QTDW and spectral analysis are calculated by the least squares fitting method. Our results demonstrate that QTDWs are present almost all year around over KB. The occurrence time, amplitudes, periods and vertical wavelengths of QTDW events with different zonal wavenumbers are determined in this study. We also find that the statistical characteristics of the QTDWs in KB are different from those at middle latitudes. The westward zonal wavenumber −4 (W4) events gradually increase with increasing latitude, whereas westward zonal wavenumbers −1, −2, and −3 (W1, W2 and W3, respectively) events all decrease with increasing latitude. Based on the quality-controlled observational spectral width data of the Beijing mesosphere–stratosphere–troposphere (MST) radar in the altitudinal range of 3–19.8 km from 2012 to 2014, this paper analyses the relationship between the proportion of negative turbulent kinetic energy (N-TKE) and the horizontal wind speed and the vertical shear of horizontal wind domain and gives the distributional characteristics of atmospheric turbulence parameters obtained by using different calculation models. Three calculation models of the spectral width method were used in this study – namely the H model (Hocking, 1985), N-2D model (Nastrom, 1997) and D–H model (Dehghan and Hocking, 2011). The results showed that the proportion of N-TKE in the H model, N-2D model and D–H model increases with the horizontal wind speed u and/or the vertical shear of horizontal wind speed ∂u∂z , and the maximum values are 60 %, 45 % and 35 %, respectively. When the ∂u∂z is greater than 0.006 s -1 , the N-TKE of the H model increases sharply with ∂u∂z ; the increase rate is about 20%0.002s-1. For these three models, the results are similar except that the vertical shear of the horizontal wind speed is greater than 0.006 s -1. When ∂u∂z>0.006 s -1 , the proportion of N-TKE in the N-2D and H models increases with ∂u∂z , while the proportion in the D–H model is less than 10 % and has slight variation. However, it is still necessary to consider the applicability of the N-2D model and D–H model in some weather processes with strong winds. The distributional characteristics with height of the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate ε and the vertical eddy diffusion coefficient Kz derived by the three models are consistent with previous studies. Still, there are differences in the values of turbulence parameters. Also, the range resolution of the radar has little effect on the differences in the range of turbulence parameters' values. The median values of ε in the H model, N-2D model and D–H model is 10 -3.2 –10 -2.7 , 10 -3.0 –10 -2.6 and 10 -3.3 –10 -2.8 m 2 s -3 , respectively. Severe hailstorms frequently occurred in Beijing between May and August 2021, leading to extensive hail damage. These hailstorms were observed by radar and satellite data, and reported by surface observers. In this study, the spectral and cloud microphysical characteristics of typical Beijing events in 2021 were analyzed using Himawari-8 satellite products and ground-based S-band weather radar data obtained from the Beijing Meteorological Bureau. The relationship between Himawari-8 brightness temperature differences (BTD) and radar reflectivity was also investigated. The results revealed that the significant spectral depression of brightness temperatures (BTs) in hail clouds was observed by a satellite. Furthermore, the stronger the radar reflectivity was, the more rapidly BTD decreased, with a nonlinear relationship between them. The results of cloud physical characteristics show that, for cloud-top heights above 10 km, the cloud effective radius was about 25 μm, with a cloud-top temperature of 225 K during these hail events. By means of Gaussian fitting, the BT threshold value (11.2 μm) was determined by satellite at 230 K, with a BTD focused on 1.9 K when hailstorms occurred. The evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) varies greatly with terrain, so that the spatial and temporal variabilities of the ABL height remain poorly understood over complex terrain. Using radar wind-profiler measurements obtained from rural mountainous (Yanqing) and adjoining urban-plain (Haidian) landscapes of Beijing, China in 2019, ABL heights are calculated based on a normalized signal-to-noise-ratio threshold. The seasonally contrasting features of ABL height variation and growth rate over the two sites are revealed for clear-sky conditions. Interestingly, the ABL in spring remains suppressed during the morning and evolves rapidly in the afternoon over Haidian; however, a usual diurnal ABL evolution is observed over Yanqing. During the winter, more rapid evolution of the ABL is observed over Haidian, although on average the daytime ABL height remains less than 800 m above ground level. The growth rate of ABL height is found to undergo a more pronounced seasonal variation over Haidian while being relatively less variable over Yanqing. As expected, the lowest (highest) growth rate of 90 m h−1 (188 m h−1) occurs in winter (summer) over Haidian. The analysis of the seasonal variations in wind profiles reveals deeper insights into the development of the local plain-to-mountain flow circulation over the region and possible implications on the contrasting seasonal ABL variations, particularly during the spring and summer. Additionally, the slower ABL evolution over Haidian in autumn and winter could be associated with an aerosol-induced stable ABL as well as stronger urban heat accumulation. Stable oxygen isotope composition (δ18O p) and deuterium excess (d p) in precipitation carry important climate and hydrological information on the history of water from evaporation, transport to precipitation. This study aims to quantify the effect of potential factors on site-specific intra-event δ18O p and d p dynamics during three precipitation events in a mid-latitude region Beijing, China. The tested factors included moisture source (M s) and upstream rainout fraction (U p) obtained by HYSPLIT backward trajectory model, radar reflectivity factor (Z e) that corresponds to raindrop size by weather radar, sub-cloud evaporation fractionation (f e) by an isotope-evaporation model, local precipitation amount (L p) and precipitation intensity (I) by rain gauge, and relative location of the sampling sites (downwind or upwind). Intra-event δ18O p had an amplitude of 10.3‰, and 84% of the variance could be explained, in the descending order of importance, by M s , site, Z e , f e and I. Intra-event d p had an amplitude of 16.5‰, and 57% of the variance could be explained by f e , site, M s and I , in the descending order of importance. Absolute values of intra-event δ18O p and d p differed between two sites, 30 km apart, by up to 4.7‰ and 9.7‰, respectively. This site-specificity in δ18O p and d p was mainly caused by differences in rainout effects and I. The physical properties and radiative role of ice clouds remain one of the uncertainties in the Earth–atmosphere system. In this study, we present a detailed analysis of ice cloud properties based on 4 years of surface millimeter-wavelength radar measurements in Beijing, China, where the summer monsoon from the ocean and the winter monsoon from the continent prevail alternately, resulting in various ice clouds. More than 6300 ice cloud clusters were studied to quantify the properties of ice clouds, such as the height, optical depth and horizontal extent, which can serve as a reference for parameterization and characterization in global climate models. In addition, comparison between ice cloud clusters formed under the summer monsoon and the winter monsoon indicates the different formation and evolution mechanisms of cirrus clouds. Statistically, temperatures of more than 95 % of ice radar bins are below - 15 ∘ C and more than 80 % of ice clouds are above 7 km. The dependence of the radar reflectivity of ice particles on height and temperature was also observed in this study, indicating that the reflectivity of ice bins increases (decreases) as the temperature (height) increases. In addition, it is found that there is a strong linear relationship between the mean reflectivity and the ice cloud depth. Due to various synoptic circumstances, the ice clouds in summer are warmer, higher and thicker, with larger reflectivity than that in winter; in particular, the mean cloud-top height of ice clouds in summer is 2.2 km higher than that in winter. Our analysis indicates that in spring, in situ-origin cirrus clouds are more common than liquid-origin cirrus clouds, while in summer liquid-origin cirrus clouds are more frequent; in autumn and winter, most cirrus clouds are of in situ origin. The vertical structure of wind is a key factor in modulating air quality, from which the determination of boundary layer height (BLH) remains a major challenge. In this paper, we developed an improved threshold method to determine the BLH from radar wind profiler (RWP) measurements. The normalized signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) profiles were used instead of the original SNR profiles to avoid instrumental inconsistencies. Additionally, a peak filter was designed to indicate the BLH based on the maximum SNR by taking into account the multiple peaks in the SNR profile. This algorithm was then applied to the RWP measurements taken in the summer (June–July–August) of 2018 in Beijing to obtain the BLHs. Validation analyses suggested that the BLH retrievals from RWP exhibited high consistency with those from radiosondes, with an average correlation coefficient of 0.69 (0.66) and a root mean squared error of 0.39 (0.41) in the daytime (nighttime). Additionally, the major features of summertime BLHs in Beijing were examined. In particular, a distinct diurnal variation in BLH was observed with a peak (1630 ± 510 m) occurring at 0600 universal time coordinated (UTC) and a minimum (587 ± 343 m) at 2300 UTC. Therefore, the algorithm presented here has great potential to be applied to other regions to obtain reliable BLHs. Raindrop size distribution (DSD) information is fundamental in understanding the precipitation microphysics and quantitative precipitation estimation, especially in complex terrain or urban environments which are known for complicated rainfall mechanism and high spatial and temporal variability. In this study, the DSD characteristics of rainy seasons in the Beijing urban area are extensively investigated using 5-year DSD observations from a Parsivel 2 disdrometer located at Tsinghua University. The results show that the DSD samples with rain rate < 1 mm h -1 account for more than half of total observations. The mean values of the normalized intercept parameter (log⁡10Nw) and the mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm) of convective rain are higher than that of stratiform rain, and there is a clear boundary between the two types of rain in terms of the scattergram of log⁡10Nw versus Dm. The convective rain in Beijing is neither continental nor maritime, owing to the particular location and local topography. As the rainfall intensity increases, the DSD spectra become higher and wider, but they still have peaks around diameter D∼0.5 mm. The midsize drops contribute most towards accumulated rainwater. The Dm and log⁡10Nw values exhibit a diurnal cycle and an annual cycle. In addition, at the stage characterized by an abrupt rise of urban heat island (UHI) intensity as well as the stage of strong UHI intensity during the day, DSD shows higher Dm values and lower log⁡10Nw values. The localized radar reflectivity (Z) and rain rate (R) relations (Z=aRb) show substantial differences compared to the commonly used NEXRAD relationships, and the polarimetric radar algorithms R(Kdp) , R(Kdp , ZDR) , and R(ZH , ZDR) show greater potential for rainfall estimation. To better understand the accuracy of cloud top heights (CTHs) derived from passive satellite data, ground-based Ka-band radar measurements from 2016 and 2017 in Beijing were compared with CTH data inferred from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI). Relative to the radar CTHs, the MODIS CTHs were found to be underestimated by −1.10 ± 2.53 km and 49 % of CTH differences were within 1.0 km. Like the MODIS results, the AHI CTHs were underestimated by −1.10 ± 2.27 km and 42 % were within 1.0 km. Both the MODIS and AHI retrieval accuracy depended strongly on the cloud depth (CD). Large differences were mainly occurring for the retrieval of thin clouds of CD < 1 km, especially clouds higher than 4 km. For clouds with CD > 1 km, the CTH difference decreased to −0.48 ± 1.70 km for MODIS and to −0.76 ± 1.63 km for AHI. MODIS CTHs greater than 6 km showed better agreement with the radar data than those less than 4 km. Statistical analysis showed that the average AHI CTHs were lower than the average MODIS CTHs by −0.64 ± 2.36 km. The monthly accuracy of both retrieval algorithms was studied and it was found that the AHI retrieval algorithm had the largest bias in winter while the MODIS retrieval algorithm had the lowest accuracy in spring. A cloud clustering and classification algorithm is developed for a ground-based Ka-band radar system in the vertically pointing mode. Cloud profiles are grouped based on the combination of a time-height clustering method and the k-means clustering method. The cloud classification algorithm, developed using a fuzzy logic method, uses nine physical parameters to classify clouds into nine types: cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, altocumulus, altostratus, stratus, stratocumulus, nimbostratus, cumulus or cumulonimbus. The performance of the clustering and classification algorithm is presented by comparison with all-sky images taken from January to June 2014. Overall, 92% of the cloud profiles are clustered successfully and the agreement in classification between the radar system and the all-sky imager is 87%. The distribution of cloud types in Beijing from January 2014 to December 2017 is studied based on the clustering and classification algorithm. The statistics show that cirrostratus clouds have the highest occurrence frequency (24%) among the nine cloud types. As a result of partial specular reflection from the atmospheric stable layer, the radar tropopause (RT) can simply and directly be detected by VHF radars with vertical incidence. Here, the Beijing mesosphere–stratosphere–troposphere (MST) radar measurements are used to investigate the structure and the variabilities in the tropopause in Xianghe, China, with a temporal resolution of 0.5 h from November 2011 to May 2017. The high-resolution radar-derived tropopause is compared with the thermal lapse-rate tropopause (LRT) that is defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) criterion from twice-daily radiosonde soundings and with the dynamical potential vorticity tropopause (PVT) that is defined as the height of the 2 PVU (PVU – potential vorticity units; 1 PVU = 106 m 2 s -1 K kg -1) surface. We only consider tropopauses below 16 km in this study because of limitations with the radar system. During all the seasons, the RT and the LRT in altitude agree well with each other, with a correlation coefficient of ≥0.74. Statistically, weaker (higher) tropopause sharpness seems to contribute to larger (smaller) difference between the RT and the LRT in altitude. The RT agrees well with the PVT in altitude during winter and spring, with a correlation coefficient of ≥0.72 , while the correlation coefficient in summer is only 0.33. As expected, the monthly mean RT and LRT height both show seasonal variations. Lomb–Scargle periodograms show that the tropopause exhibits obvious diurnal variation throughout the seasons, whereas the semidiurnal oscillations are rare and are occasionally observed during summer and later spring. The existing distribution of meteor radars located from high- to low-latitude regions provides a favorable temporal and spatial coverage for investigating the climatology of the global mesopause density. In this study, we report the climatology of the mesopause relative density estimated using multiyear observations from nine meteor radars, namely, the Davis Station (68.6 ∘ S, 77.9 ∘ E), Svalbard (78.3 ∘ N, 16 ∘ E) and Tromsø (69.6 ∘ N, 19.2 ∘ E) meteor radars located at high latitudes; the Mohe (53.5 ∘ N, 122.3 ∘ E), Beijing (40.3 ∘ N, 116.2 ∘ E), Mengcheng (33.4 ∘ N, 116.6 ∘ E) and Wuhan (30.5 ∘ N, 114.6 ∘ E) meteor radars located in the midlatitudes; and the Kunming (25.6 ∘ N, 103.8 ∘ E) and Darwin (12.3 ∘ S, 130.8 ∘ E) meteor radars located at low latitudes. The daily mean relative density was estimated using ambipolar diffusion coefficients derived from the meteor radars and temperatures from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on board the Aura satellite. The seasonal variations in the Davis Station meteor radar relative densities in the southern polar mesopause are mainly dominated by an annual oscillation (AO). The mesopause relative densities observed by the Svalbard and Tromsø meteor radars at high latitudes and the Mohe and Beijing meteor radars at high midlatitudes in the Northern Hemisphere show mainly an AO and a relatively weak semiannual oscillation (SAO). The mesopause relative densities observed by the Mengcheng and Wuhan meteor radars at lower midlatitudes and the Kunming and Darwin meteor radars at low latitudes show mainly an AO. The SAO is evident in the Northern Hemisphere, especially at high latitudes, and its largest amplitude, which is detected at the Tromsø meteor radar, is comparable to the AO amplitudes. These observations indicate that the mesopause relative densities over the southern and northern high latitudes exhibit a clear seasonal asymmetry. The maxima of the yearly variations in the mesopause relative densities display a clear latitudinal variation across the spring equinox as the latitude decreases; these latitudinal variation characteristics may be related to latitudinal changes influenced by gravity wave forcing. Abstract The cloud structure determined from ground-based measurements is generally important to the better understanding of the climate system. This study examines vertically-resolved cloud structures and their characteristics over Beijing using one year (1 December 2016 to 30 November 2017) of ground-based Ka-band (35 GHz) millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) measurements. MMCR-derived cloud-base heights (CBHs) and cloud-top heights (CTHs) are compared with those derived from a Vaisala CL51 ceilometer (CL51) and those retrieved from the Himawari-8 geostationary satellite (HW8). Overall, the MMCR-derived CBHs are slightly higher (by 0.08 km) than those derived from the CL51. By contrast, the MMCR-derived CTHs are significantly higher (by 0.82 km) than those retrieved from the HW8 satellite. In the presence of precipitation, the MMCR-derived cloud boundaries are generally lower than those obtained by the CL51 due to the much larger rain-induced attenuation of MMCR signals. In particular, the discrepancy between MMCR- and CL51-derived CBHs decreases with rainfall intensity, as opposed to CTHs from the MMCR and the HW8 satellite that increase with rainfall intensity. CL51 and HW8 data can be used to complement MMCR data when there is rainfall or when MMCR data is missing. This enables the development of a seasonal cloud climatology for Beijing. CTHs reach a peak in summer, and CBHs are lowest in winter. The observed cloud properties reported here will not only facilitate future cloud forcing studies but also provide a validation data source for climate models. In this study, a lightning data assimilation (LDA) method adjusting dynamical fields was examined in the rapid cycle with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model and WRF Data Assimilation (WRFDA). This method retrieves pseudo vertical velocity profiles from total lightning observations and promotes wind convergence over lightning regions. This newly developed LDA scheme is compared with radar data assimilation (RDA) that has been routinely applied in severe storm nowcasting models. Depending on whether the radar or lightning data is assimilated, four experiments were designed to evaluate the positive impacts of dynamical adjustment from LDA. Using a typical severe mesoscale convection system occurred in Beijing, we found that the effect of RDA and LDA are different. The assimilation of radar radial velocity mainly improves the forecast in a longer time, while assimilation of pseudo-vertical-velocity from lightning data mainly corrects intensity and location of the forecasted precipitation. When both radar and lightning data are assimilated, the small-scale wind convergence are promoted and contributes to the intensified updrafts. Thermal and water vapor fields are also adjusted indirectly. Consequently, the convective precipitation is significantly improved and the positive impacts from the combined assimilation scheme persisted over a longer period (at least 3 h). It can be concluded that a combined assimilation of convective data from multiple sources such as radar and lightning data enhance prominently the accuracy of short-term convection forecasts. • A lightning data assimilation method adjusting dynamical fields is applied in nowcasting through rapid update cycling. • Radar data and lightning data assimilation are combined to improve the accuracy of short-term precipitation forecasts. • Radar radial velocity improves forecast in a longer time, while lightning data corrects its intensity and location. Based on three years of data observed by Beijing MST radar between 2012 and 2014, this study gives the distribution characteristics of the turbulence energy dissipation rate ε and the vertical turbulence diffusion coefficient K z in the troposphere–lower stratosphere over Beijing based on the spectral width method. Additionally, from the perspective of atmospheric stability expressed by the Brunt–Väisälä frequency N and the gradient Richardson number Ri, the seasonal variations of turbulence parameters at different heights are analyzed. The results show that ε ( K z ) is distributed in the range of 10−4 to 10−1.5 m2 s−3 (100 to 101 m2 s−1), with median values of 10−3 to 10−2.5 m2 s−3 (100.4 to 100.75 m2 s−1). In the height range of −1 km to about +1 km from the tropopause, the profiles of ε have no noticeable seasonal difference from October to next May, and ε increases sharply with the slope of linear regression ∇log(ε)/∇h = 0.25 (m2 s−3) km−1. The seasonal variation of turbulence parameters has noticeable differences at different atmospheric layers. Furthermore, the atmospheric static/dynamic stability and turbulence intensity are the influencing factors of turbulence parameters. From the tropopause to 14 km, the values of ε and N both have a peak from October to next May, and this peak layer disappears from July to August. Within the range of 2–4 km from the ground, K z and the frequency of Ri < 0.25 have a significant positive correlation, with a Pearson correlation coefficient greater than 0.5, and both have large value layers in March to May and September to October. The Variational Doppler Radar Analysis System (VDRAS) was implemented in Beijing, China, and contributed to the Beijing 2008 Forecast Demonstration Project (B08FDP) in support of the Beijing Summer Olympics. VDRAS is a four-dimensional variational data assimilation system that produces frequently updated analyses using Doppler radar radial velocities and reflectivities, surface observations, and mesoscale model data. The system was tested in real time during the B08FDP pretrials in the summers of 2006 and 2007 and run during the Olympics to assist the 0--6-h convective weather nowcasting. This paper provides a description of the upgraded system and its Beijing implementation, an evaluation of the system performance using data collected during the pretrials, and its utility on convective weather nowcasting through two case studies. Verification of VDRAS wind against a wind profiler shows that the analyzed wind is reasonably accurate with a smaller RMS difference for 2006 than for 2007 due to better radar data coverage in 2006. The analyzed cold pools in three convective episodes are compared with surface observations at selected stations. The result shows good agreement between the analysis and the observations. The seasonal variations of raindrop size distribution (DSD) and rainfall are investigated using three-year (2016–2018) observations from a two-dimensional video disdrometer (2DVD) located at a suburban station (40.13° N, 116.62° E, ~30 m AMSL) in Beijing, China. The annual distribution of rainfall presents a unimodal distribution with a peak in summer with total rainfall of 966.6 mm, followed by fall. Rain rate (R), mass-weighted mean diameter (Dm), and raindrop concentration (Nt) are stratified into six regimes to study their seasonal variation and relative rainfall contribution to the total seasonal rainfall. Heavy drizzle/light rain (R2: 0.2~2.5 mm h−1) has the maximum occurrence frequency throughout the year, while the total rainfall in summer is primarily from heavy rain (R4: 10~50 mm h−1). The rainfall for all seasons is contributed primarily from small raindrops (Dm2: 1.0~2.0 mm). The distribution of occurrence frequency of Nt and the relative rainfall contribution exhibit similar behavior during four seasons with Nt of 10~1000 m−3 registering the maximum occurrence and rainfall contributions. Rainfall in Beijing is dominated by stratiform rain (SR) throughout the year. There is no convective rainfall (CR) in winter, i.e., it occurs most often during summer. DSD of SR has minor seasonal differences, but varies significantly in CR. The mean values of log10Nw (Nw: mm−1m−3, the generalized intercept parameter) and Dm of CR indicate that the CR during spring and fall in Beijing is neither continental nor maritime, at the same time, the CR in summer is close to the maritime-like cluster. The radar reflectivity (Z) and rain rate () relationship (Z = R) showed seasonal differences, but were close to the standard NEXRAD Z-R relationship in summer. The shape of raindrops observed from 2DVD was more spherical than the shape obtained from previous experiments, and the effect of different axis ratio relations on polarimetric radar measurements was investigated through T-matrix-based scattering simulations. In this study, the temperature and relative humidity profiles retrieved from five ground-based microwave radiometers in Beijing were assimilated into the rapid-refresh multi-scale analysis and prediction system-short term (RMAPS-ST). The precipitation bifurcation prediction that occurred in Beijing on 4 May 2019 was selected as a case to evaluate the impact of their assimilation. For this purpose, two experiments were set. The Control experiment only assimilated conventional observations and radar data, while the microwave radiometers profilers (MWRPS) experiment assimilated conventional observations, the ground-based microwave radiometer profiles and radar data into the RMAPS-ST model. The results show that in comparison with the Control test, the MWRPS test made reasonable adjustments for the thermal conditions in time, better reproducing the weak heat island phenomenon in the observation prior to the rainfall. Thus, assimilating MWRPS improved the skills of the precipitation forecast in both the distribution and the intensity of rainfall precipitation, capable of predicting the process of belt-shaped radar echo splitting and the precipitation bifurcation in the urban area of Beijing. The assimilation of the ground-based microwave radiometer profiles improved the skills of the quantitative precipitation forecast to a certain extent. Among multiple cycle experiments, the onset of 0600 UTC cycle closest to the beginning of rainfall performed best by assimilating the ground-based microwave radiometer profiles. Cirrus clouds are ice clouds. Our understanding of the basic microscale physics of ice clouds is not yet adequate. In this study, interior physical properties of cirrus clouds over Beijing are investigated based on four years of continuous measurements of a Ka-band polar Doppler radar, which performs long-term observations with higher temporal resolution than the aircraft and the satellite. The probability distribution functions of radar reflectivity at various temperatures are presented and a positive correlation relationship between reflectivity and temperature is also found. In addition, the distributions of the particle Doppler velocity and particle movements in cirrus clouds are also revealed. According to the cloud-base temperature (CBT), all cirrus clouds are divided into three types [ C ih : CBT < 273 K and CBH (cloud-base height) ≥ 258 K; C im : CBT < 258 K and CBT > 235 K; C il : CBT ≤ 235 K] in order to understand their formation mechanisms and possible differences. The results of investigation show that C il has the lowest mean depth, the lowest mean and maximum reflectivity, and the lowest inhomogeneity among the three types of cirrus clouds, while C ih has the highest and C im lies between the two. The reflectivity–temperature relationship is also different in the three types. In particular, for C il , reflectivity varies little with the variation in temperature. The significant difference in microphysical properties and interior structures between C il and C ih proves their different formation mechanisms. C il , illustrating higher vertical uniformity, is likely generated by radiation cooling, while the other cirrus cloud types are generated differently. This paper compares the wind fields measured by the meteor radar at Mohe, Beijing, Wuhan, and Sanya stations and horizontal wind model (HWM14) predictions. HWM14 appears to successfully reproduce the height-time distribution of the monthly mean zonal winds, although large discrepancies occur in wind speed between the model and measurement, especially in the summer and winter months. For meridional wind, the consistency between model prediction and radar observation is worse than that of zonal wind. The consistency between radar measurements and model prediction at Sanya station is worse than other sites located at higher latitudes. A Chinese Ka-band solid-state transmitter cloud radar (CR) was employed to investigate clouds and precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in summer 2014. After performing quality control and merging the output from the three work modes of CR, the Doppler spectral density data were analyzed to estimate the vertical air motion (Vair) and particle fall speed (Vfall) in clouds. The reproduced radar reflectivity was employed to retrieve the ice water content (IWC) and ice effective radius (Re). The cloud type classification algorithm was developed to classify cloud conditions into eight different categories. The vertical and daily variations of reflectivity, Vair, Vfall, IWC, and Re were then analyzed, and as a result, four conclusions were formulated. First, the clouds with reflectivity less than −10 dBZ were mainly located above 7 km, and the precipitable particles were formed below this layer (rain echo top) due to the abundant supercooled water therein. Second, the weak updraft in the range of 2–4 km caused the high occurrence of weak clouds during 04:00–12:00 Beijing local time (BT), and the rain echo top did not exceed 7 km due to the existing downdraft in 4–6 km. After 14:00 BT, convective clouds quickly developed, and the averaged updraft, reflectivity, and the echo top notably increased. Third, particular cloud types commonly exhibited weak reflectivity, low IWC, and less vertical variations, while the others more obvious vertical variations with larger IWC and Re. Last, compared with the radar sensitivity and range from radar, Vair biases that were introduced by the Doppler spectra broadening due to turbulence, wind shear, and radar beam width, could be neglected. Cloud top height (CTH) is an essential pareter for the general circulation model in understanding the impact of clouds on the Earth's radiation budget and global climate change. This paper compares the CTH products, derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), onboard the Aqua and Terra satellites with ground-based Ka band radar data in Beijing from 2014 to 2017. The aim was to investigate the data accuracy and the difference in CTH measurements between passive satellite data and active ground-based radar data. The results show that MODIS, on average, underestimates CTH relative to radar by −1.08 ± 2.48 km, but with a median difference of −0.65 km and about 48% of differences are within 1 km. Statistically, MODIS CTHs which are greater than 6 km show lower discrepancy to radar CTH than those of MODIS CTHs less than 4 km. The CTH difference is independent of cloud fraction and cloud layer. It shows strong dependence on cloud depth, decreasing as cloud depth increases. There is a tendency for MODIS to underestimate high thin clouds but overestimate low thin clouds relative to radar. Total ozone, SO2, CO, NO2, aerosol PM10, total water vapor and temperature inversion show unobvious influences in the CTH discrepancy. It is shown that the MODIS CO2-slicing technique performs much better than IRW (infrared window) technique when cloud layer is higher than 2 km. The values of ratio a of the linear relationship between specific attenuation and specific differential phase vary significantly in convective storms as a result of resonance scattering. The best-linear-fit ratio a at X band is determined using the modified attenuation correction algorithm based on differential phase and attenuation, as well as the premise that reflectivity is unattenuated in S band radar detection. Meanwhile, the systemic reflectivity bias between the X band radar and S band radar and water layer attenuation (ZW) on the wet antenna cover of the X band radar are also considered. The good performance of the modified correction algorithm is demonstrated in a moderate rainfall event. The data were collected by four X band dual-polarization (X-POL) radar sites, namely, BJXCP, BJXFS, BJXSY, and BJXTZ, and a China's New Generation Weather Radar (CINRAD/SA radar) site, BJSDX, in Beijing on 20 July 2016. Ratio a is calculated for each volume scan of the X band radar, with a mean value of 0.26 dB deg−1 varying from 0.20 to 0.31 dB deg−1. The average values of systemic reflectivity bias between the X band radar (at BJXCP, BJXFS, BJXSY, and BJXTZ) and S band radar (at BJSDX) are 0, −3, 2, and 0 dB, respectively. The experimentally determined ZW is in substantial agreement with the theoretically calculated ones, and their values are an order of magnitude smaller than rain attenuation. The comparison of the modified attenuation correction algorithm and the empirical-fixed-ratio correction algorithm is further evaluated at the X-POL radar. It is shown that the modified attenuation correction algorithm in the present paper provides higher correction accuracy for rain attenuation than the empirical-fixed-ratio correction algorithm. The millimeter-wave cloud radar, ceilometer, and disdrometer have been widely used to observe clouds and precipitation. However, there are some drawbacks when those three instruments are solely employed due to their own limitations, such as the fact that radars usually suffer from signal attenuation and ceilometers/disdrometers cannot provide measurements of the hydrometeors of aloft clouds and precipitation. Thus, in this paper, we developed an integrated technology by combining and utilizing the advantages of three instruments together to investigate the vertical structure and diurnal variation of warm clouds and precipitation, and the raindrop size distribution. Specifically, the technology consists of appropriate data processing, quality control, and retrieval methods. It was implemented to study the warm clouds and precipitation in South China during the pre-flood season of 2016. The results showed that the hydrometeors of warm clouds and precipitation were mainly distributed below 2.5 km and most of the rainfall events were very light with a rain rate less than 1 mm h−1, however, the stronger precipitation primarily contributed the accumulated rain amount. Furthermore, a rising trend of cloud base height from 1000 to 1900 BJT was found. The cloud top height and cloud thickness gradually increased from 1200 BJT to reach a maximum at 1600 BJT (Beijing Standard Time, UTC+8), and then decreased until 2000 BJT. Also, three periods of the apparent rainfall on the ground of the day, namely, 0400–0700 BJT, 1400–1800 BJT, and 2300–2400 BJT were observed. During three periods, the raindrops had wider size spectra, higher number concentrations, larger rain rates, and higher water contents than at other times. The hydrometeor type, size, and concentration were gradually changed in the vertical orientation. The raindrop size distributions of warm precipitation in the air and on the ground were different, which can be expressed by γ distributions N(D) = 1.49 × 104D−0.9484exp(−6.79D) in the air and N(D) = 1.875 × 103D0.862exp(−2.444D) on the ground, where D and N(D) denote the diameter and number concentration of the raindrops, respectively. This study demonstrates the capability of a cloud model in simulating a real-world tornado using observed radiosonde data that define a homogeneous background. A reasonable simulation of a tornado event in Beijing, China, on 21 July 2012 is obtained. The simulation reveals the evolution of a descending reflectivity core (DRC) that has commonalities with radar observations, which retracts upward right before tornadogenesis. Tornadogenesis can be divided into three steps: the downward development of mesocyclone vortex, the upward development of tornado vortex, and the eventual downward development of condensation funnel cloud. This bottom-up development provides a numerical evidence for the growing support for a bottom-up, rapid tornadogenesis process as revealed by the state-of-the-art mobile X-band phase-array radar observations. The evolution of the simulated tornado features two replacement processes of three near-surface vortices coupled with the same midlevel updraft. The first replacement occurs during the intensification of the tornado before its maturity. The second replacement occurs during the tornado's demise, when the connection between the midlevel mesocyclone and the near-surface vortex is cut off by a strong downdraft.
