Reactor pressure vessel (RPV) studs are key components of nuclear reactors, and their connection with flange ensures the sealing of the RPV under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. In the present work, the external threads of the RPV stud were prepared by triaxial rolling, and the texture evolution of the external thread root material of an RPV stud was predicted by finite element analysis coupled with viscoplastic self-consistent simulations. The microstructure of the external thread root material of RPV stud was characterized by scanning electron microscope and electron back-scattered diffraction. The installation characteristics of the turned and rolled parts of the RPV stud were tested by installation and pretightening tests. It was found that the dynamic recrystallization at the external thread root formed ultrafine tempered sorbite grains, high-angle grain boundaries (47%), and strong {111} <110> and {111} <112> textures. In the installation and pretightening test, the residual elongation of rolled parts was reduced by 6% under the same loading pressure. The triaxial rolling process distributed the microstructure of the external thread root of the RPV stud in a gradient manner, resulting in improved stud installation characteristics. AbstractThis study investigated the effects of laser energy density at different scanning speeds on the microstructure evolution, phase equilibrium, mechanical properties, and fracture modes of welds in dissimilar steel welded joints (Q345D and 20Mn2). The connection of dissimilar steel welded joints is achieved by using a laser synchronous powder feeding method. The microstructure and phase evolution of the joint were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Mechanical property testing was performed on the joint via a micro-Vickers hardness tester and an electronic testing machine, and the fracture surface morphology was observed via a scanning electron microscope. The results show that when the laser energy density is 1125 J/mm2, the fine cellular crystals, columnar crystals, and equiaxed crystal structures of the joint are more uniformly distributed. As the laser energy density increased, the transition of the Q345D side structure from cellular to columnar crystals and the transition of the 20Mn2 side structure from cellular to equiaxed crystals became more pronounced. Mechanical property testing revealed that an increase in the laser energy density can significantly improve the microhardness and tensile strength of a joint. However, a large amount of the Fe matrix from the 20Mn2 side permeates into the coating, making the mechanical properties of the dilution zone lower than those of the crystallization zone, and making it more prone to fracture on this side. Transparent lithium aluminum silicon glass‐ceramics are prepared via heat treatment and the effect of boron oxide (B2O3) content on the structure and properties of Li2O‐Al2O3‐SiO2 glass‐ceramics is investigated. The X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that the parent glass containing B2O3 exhibits a higher concentration of bridging oxygen (BO). With an increase in B2O3 content, the relative amount of BO changes from 76.64% to 79.86% and then to 79.52%. Simultaneously, the second crystallization peak temperature TP2 of the samples increases from 715°C to 720°C and then to 724°C by differential scanning calorimeter analysis. The X‐ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope results indicate that the addition of B2O3 facilitates grain growth, while an increase in B2O3 substitution for Al2O3 hinders the precipitation of LiAlSi4O10 but promotes quartz formation. The glass containing 2 wt% B2O3 with the heat treatment of 560°C/ 4 h+ 680°C/2 h shows a Vickers Hardness value of approximately 7.75 GPa, and a transmittance at 550 nm reaching ∼85%. With the rapid advancement of 3D-printing technology, additive manufacturing using FDM extrusion has emerged as a prominent method in manufacturing. However, it encounters certain limitations, notably in surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Addressing issues related to stability and surface roughness necessitates the integration of 3D-printing technology with traditional machining, a strategy known as the hybrid technique. This paper presents a study of the surface geometric parameters and microstructure of plastic parts produced by FDM. Sleeve-shaped samples were 3D-printed from polyethylene terephthalate glycol material using variable layer heights of 0.1 mm and 0.2 mm and then subjected to the turning process with PVD-coated DCMT11T304 turning inserts using variable cutting parameters. The cutting depth was constant at 0.82 mm. Surface roughness values were correlated with the cutting tool feed rate and the printing layer height applied. The selected specimen's microstructure was studied with a Zeiss EVO MA 15 scanning electron microscope. The roundness was measured with a Keyence VR-6200 3D optical profilometer. The research results confirmed that the additional application of turning, combined with a reduction in the feed rate (0.0506 mm/rev) and the height of the printed layer (0.1 mm), reduced the surface roughness of the sleeve (Ra = 1.94 μm) and increased its geometric accuracy. Laser beam remelting is a relatively simple and highly effective technique for the physical modification of surfaces to improve resistance to cavitation erosion. In this study, we investigated the effect of laser remelting on the surface of cast stainless steel with 0.40% C, 25% Cr, 20% Ni, and 1.5% Si on cavitation erosion behavior in tap water. The investigation was conducted using a piezoceramic crystal vibrator apparatus. Base laser beam parameters were carefully selected to result in a defect-free surface (no porosity, material burn, cracks) with hardness capable of generating better resistance to cavitation erosion. The experimental results were compared with those of the reference material. Surface morphology and microstructure evolution after cavitation tests were analyzed using an optical metallographic microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and hardness tests to explore the mechanism of improving surface degradation resistance. The conducted research demonstrated that surfaces modified by laser remelting exhibit a 4.8–5.1 times greater increase in cavitation erosion resistance due to the homogenization of chemical composition and refinement of the microstructure, while maintaining the properties of the base material. Phosphogypsum (PG) is an industrial solid waste generated during the preparation of phosphoric acid, which is produced in large quantities and stockpiled or discharged into the sea. This study aims to design sustainable pavement base materials constituting significant PG content. The physical and chemical properties of the raw materials were first tested. The optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of specimens were determined by compaction tests. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS), split tensile strength (STS), freeze-thaw cycles, and shrinkage tests were used to evaluate the mechanical performance of phosphogypsum pavement base material (PPBM). Furthermore, the interaction mechanism was investigated by applying scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) tests. The results showed that the 7-day UCS of PPBM with cement content 8%–12% was greater than 3 MPa. The specimens retained 91.3% unconfined compressive strength over five freeze-thaw cycles. Unlike traditional semirigid base materials, the PPBM exhibited no shrinkage strain, which is manifested by the growth of expansion strain with increasing amounts of PG. Through microscopic observation, the PPBM produced ettringite (AFt) and calcium-silicate-hydrate (CSH) with the extension of curing time, which is consistent with the analysis of FTIR spectrums. This study centers on the synthesis and characterization of a novel double perovskite, termed Sr 2 TiZrO 6 (STZO), which was synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method and subsequently calcined at 1000 °C for 12 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern refinement confirmed the formation of the tetragonal phase Sr 2 TiZrO 6 (space group P 4 mm), while both XRD and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses revealed that the resulting STZO displaying spherical-like grains with nanometric diameters. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed a minor weight loss attributed to the emergence of the ZrO 2 phase and the formation of the STZO double perovskite. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) results demonstrated strong UV-light absorption, with an optical absorption onset below 400 nm. The obtained band gap for direct transitions of the STZO sample is equal to 3.26 eV. The conductance and impedance study of the STZO sample are investigated. The present properties provide crucial insights to enhance comprehension of the STZO double perovskite material, which holds promise as a viable candidate for a range of applications, such as solar cells and photodiodes. Laser shock peening (LSP) is a novel non-contact surface modification technique to enhance the corrosion and compression behavior of stainless steel 308L (SS308L) material for a cryogenic application. SS308L is commonly used as a weld filler, weld electrode and cryogenic environment due to its low carbon content and good mechanical and high corrosion resistance properties. In this present study, wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) has been utilized to manufactured SS308L material and studied the compression, corrosion, wettability and surface properties of the material. Further, the nanosecond laser shock peening has been utilized to modify the additive-manufactured SS308L surface and mechanical properties. From the experimental results, it has been observed that the uni-directional flow path (UDFP) deposition has better corrosion resistance wettability and surface finish than the bi-directional flow path (BDFP) deposition on wire-arc additive-manufactured SS308L material due to its more uniform microstructure and smoother surface finish. In addition, the post-processing treatment (LSP) of SS308L materials has improved the compressive strength of additive-manufactured SS308L material with 20.6 and 15.9% as compared to UDFP and BDFP due to grain surface refinement and increases in dislocation density. The corrosion rate of LSP-treated materials was reduced by 20.7% compared to the UDFP materials due to the higher corrosion potential and lower corrosion current density. The higher surface roughness has produced better passive film formation to enhanced corrosion resistance in the UDFP with LSP. The machinability of aluminum alloy (Al-6082) has the scope of enhancement by integrating Friction Stir Processing (FSP) with tool geometry, tool shape and different tool materials. In this research, the role of tool pin shape has been studied by experimenting on various tool shapes (square, hexagonal and octagonal) with the aim of machinability improvement. In FSP, the tool rotation speed is 930rpm and tool travel speed is 26mm/min. The specimens have undergone tensile, microhardness and microstructure testing using optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy. The percentage elongation has been increased from 15% to 29% in the case of the octagonal-shaped tool pin; similarly, the (Vickers’) microhardness value is 14.6% higher than the square- and hexagonal-shaped tool pins. Among these tool pin shapes, the octagonal-shaped tool pin succeeded in providing the best-in-class machinability performance on Al-6082 T6 alloy with FSP. Before artificial ageing, extruded aluminium profiles are subjected to stretching with a small cold deformation in the range of 0.5–2%. This deformation improves the geometrical stability of the extruded product and causes changes in the microstructure of the profile, which leads to the strain hardening of the material after artificial ageing. The work has resulted in the creation of the prototype of an original device, which is unique in the world, for the dynamic stretching of the extruded profiles after quenching. The semi-industrial unit is equipped with a hydraulic system for stretching and a pneumatic system for cold dynamic deformation. The aim of this research paper is to produce advantageous microstructural changes and increase the strength properties of the extruded material. The solution of the dynamic stretching of the profiles after extrusion is a great challenge and an innovation not yet practised. The paper presents the results of microstructural and mechanical investigations carried out on extruded AlMgSi(Cu) alloys quenched on the run-out table of the press, dynamically stretched under different conditions, and artificially aged for T5 temper. Different stretching conditions were applied: a static deformation of 0.5% at a speed of 0.02 m/s, and dynamic deformation of 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5% at speeds of 0.05 and 2 m/s. After the thermomechanical treatment of the profiles, microstructural observations were carried out using an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A tensile test was also carried out on the specimens stretched under different conditions. In all the cases, the dynamically stretched profiles showed higher strength properties, especially those deformed at a higher speed of 2 m/s, where the increase in UTS was observed in the range of 7–18% compared to the classical (static) stretching. Tungsten argon arc welding (TIG), cold metal transfer (CMT) welding and flash butt welding (FBW) are used to join M390 and 304. The mechanical properties of M390 and 304 welded joints with different welding methods were compared by tensile and microhardness experiments. The microstructure evolution and phase changes of TIG, CMT and FBW welded joints were compared and analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and x-ray diffraction. The grain size of weld metal (WM) and M390 heat-affected zone of three types of welded joints were measured by Image J software. Corrosion resistance of three types of weld joints was characterized by electrochemical corrosion tests, and the microstructure of post-corrosion test specimens was characterized by SEM and EDS. The results show that three types of welded joints without cracks and voids can be obtained between dissimilar metals M390 and 304. The microstructure of TIG weld metal is composed of martensite and the carbides M7C3 and M23C6 due to higher heat input during TIG welding processes. Because extensive C, Cr and Ni element diffusion occurs during FBW welding due to low heat input, the microstructure of the weld metal is composed of martensite and austenite matrix and carbides of M7C3 and M23C6. The filling of nickel-based alloys during CMT welding processes make the microstructure include austenite and (Al, Ni, Ti) carbide. The tensile strength and elongation of CMT welded joint can reach 501 MPa and 21.8%, the corrosion current density is 4 mA cm−2, and the corrosion voltage is − 21 mV, which is the best mechanical properties among the three types of welded joints. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-extruded Mg-8Sn-4Al alloys micro-alloyed with Ag and Sc elements were investigated by optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron backscattered diffraction. The as-cast Mg-8Sn-4Al, Mg-8Sn-4Al-0.8Sc and Mg-8Sn-4Al-1Ag-0.8Sc alloys were extruded at 320 °C with an extrusion ratio of 25 without further solid solution and aging treatment. The microstructure of all as-cast and as-extruded Mg-8Sn-4Al alloy is composed of α-Mg matrix and Mg2Sn phase. The extrusion treatment and Ag and Sc addition obviously refine the grains and Mg2Sn phase. A complete dynamic recrystallization and a slight basal texture were observed in the as-extruded alloys. In addition, the stable block-shaped Al3Sc phase was also observed in Mg-8Sn-4Al alloys with Sc addition after extrusion treatment. Interestingly, the Sc or Ag-Sc addition simultaneously improves the tensile strength and elongation of as-extruded Mg-8Sn-4Al alloy. The enhanced ultimate tensile strength and tensile elongation of as-extruded Mg-8Sn-4Al-1Ag-0.8Sc alloy reach 318.07 MPa and 14.41%, respectively, which are higher than these of as-extruded Mg-8Sn-4Al alloy. This is mainly attributed to the grain refinement, Mg2Sn phase refinement and solid solution elements (Al, Ag and Sc). This experimental investigation reports the impact of boron carbide (B4Cp) particles on Al2214/3%Grp/xB4Cp hybrid metal matrix composites (HMMCs) at a constant weight percentage of Grp (3 wt.%) and x wt.% of B4Cp particles (x = 1.5, 3, 4.5, and 6) produced by a conventional stir casting metallurgical route with bottom pouring facilities. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) combined with the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDX) shows reasonable uniform distributions of particles in the matrix phase, and a spectrum of elements present in hybrid composites with various intensities. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed for the phase characterisation of hybrid composites. Further, the mechanical properties of Al2214 alloy and Al2214/3%Grp/xB4Cp hybrid composites were studied. The experimental results of the hybrid composite revealed improved hardness and tensile properties with the addition of wt.% B4C particles. In this article, the sol–gel method was used as a synthesis method, which shows the physicochemical nature of the synthesis of a new complex material, ferrite Li0.5MnFe1.5O4. The structure and composition of the synthesized ferrite were determined by X-ray phase analysis. According to analysis indicators, it was found that our compound is a single-phase, spinel-structured, and syngony-cubic type of compound. The microstructure of the compound and the quantitative composition of the elements contained within it were analyzed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Under a scanning electron microscope, microsystems were taken from different parts of Li0.5MnFe1.5O4-type crystallite; the elemental composition of crystals was analyzed; and the general type of surface layer of complex ferrite was shown. As a result, given the fact that the compound consists of a single phase, the clarity of its construction was determined by the topography and chemical composition of the compound. As a result, it was found that the newly synthesized complex ferrites correspond to the formula Li0.5MnFe1.5O4. The particles of the formed compounds have a large size (between 50.0 μm or 20.0 μm and 10.0 μm). Electrophysical measurements were carried out on an LCR-800 unit at intervals of 293–483 K and at frequencies of 1.5 and 10 kHz. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the impact splitting tensile property and microstructure characteristics of steel fiber recycled aggregate concrete (SFRAC) based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The effects of fiber content, strain rate, and recycled aggregate replacement ratio on the mechanical parameters (static and dynamic splitting tensile strength, peak strain and ultimate strain, peak toughness and ultimate toughness) were analyzed. Then the microstructure characteristics of SFRAC at different interfaces were observed via SEM, and energy spectrum analysis of the interface transition zone (ITZ) was carried out. The results show that SFRAC is a strain-rate sensitive material whose mechanical properties are affected by the strain rate and improved with its increase. It is also found that steel fibers play a role in improving dynamic splitting tensile strength and toughness, and the optimal fiber content is about 1.0%. However, increasing the recycled aggregate replacement ratio will weaken the good effect of steel fibers on the mechanical properties. Furthermore, it can be seen by means of SEM that the fracture area of steel fiber is mostly pulled out. Also, there are more cracks and pores in the cement paste of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) compared with normal concrete (NC), and the hydration products in the ITZ are significantly decreased. The study investigated the effect of the solution treatment process on the corrosion behavior and microstructure of the duplex stainless steel. It was also aimed to reveal this effect comparatively depending on the chemical composition and alloying element content. For this purpose, UNS S32205 and UNS S32760 alloys were treated at 1000 °C, 1020 °C and 1040 °C for an hour. A solution treatment temperature was determined according to Thermo-Calc analysis. The examined samples were characterized by an optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and XRD analysis. Also, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization analyses revealed the corrosion properties of solution-treated samples. Microstructural studies showed that enhanced solution treatment temperature increased ferrite content for both alloys. A lower solution treatment temperature caused the formation of sigma in the microstructure of S32760 alloy. On the other hand, the charge transfer resistance of the passive layer was reduced after solution treatment at 1000 °C and 1020 °C, indicating decreasing corrosion resistance. A higher austenite ratio in S32205 led to pitting, while corrosion resistance improved with higher treatment temperatures. The presence of the sigma phase in S32760 significantly impacted corrosion properties by increasing ion transfer on the surface, leading to reduced corrosion resistance. The paper mainly studies the effect of surface carbon content on the deformation of M50 steel bearing ring, and the carbon content is changed by short-time carburizing on the surface of the bearing ring. By using the scanning electron microscope, x-ray diffraction analyzer, hardness tester and torsion spring tester to observe the microstructure and measure the hardness and size variation characteristic. The size and ovality variations of carburized and uncarburized samples are analyzed. Results show that austempering hardness decreases and tempering hardness increases with the increase of surface carbon content. The size of the bearing ring without carburizing is reduced by 0.31 mm after austempering, and the martensite in the surface layer plays a key role in inhibiting the size reduction. The size of the bearing ring with the carbon potential of 0.6% is reduced by 0.01 mm after austempering, and the size reduction is inhibited by the transformation of martensite in the core and surface. The ununiformity of carburizing layer makes the martensitic transition time in different regions inconsistent, resulting in the ovality of M50 steel increased by 0.14 mm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NiSi–NiCr thin film thermocouples (TFTCs) have significant application value as contact temperature sensors in cutting temperature measurements owing to their fast response and negligible volume. However, due to the relatively high chemical activity of Ni-based alloys, high-temperature oxidation strongly affects the operational reliability of NiSi–NiCr TFTCs. In this respect, depositing an anti-oxidation coating onto the surface of NiSi–NiCr TFTCs is considered an effective way to protect them in high-temperature environments. In this study, NiSi and NiCr films were deposited on cemented carbides and annealed at 200 °C–600 °C in air. Scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and four-probe resistivity tests were used to characterize the microstructure and resistivity of NiSi and NiCr film. Then SiN x O y films were deposited onto the NiSi and NiCr films and compared with uncoated samples after annealing at 600 °C. The effect of SiN x O y films on the thermal stability and thermoelectric output of NiSi–NiCr TFTCs was investigated. The results show that the NiSi film was partially oxidized at 200 °C and entirely oxidized when the temperature exceeded 400 °C. The completely oxidized NiSi films had evident defects and cracks, and the resistivity increased by a factor of over 1000. The NiCr film could not be completely oxidized at 600 °C, which is attributed to the formation of Cr 2 O 3 as an external oxide barrier layer. Below 600 °C, SiN x O y films could effectively protect NiSi and NiCr films from oxidation. Thus, the addition of SiN x O y film increases the maximum temperature at which NiSi–NiCr TFTCs can be used. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extracting gas from unconventional shale reservoirs with low permeability is challenging. To overcome this, hydraulic fracturing (HF) is employed. Despite enhancing shale gas production, HF has drawbacks like groundwater pollution and induced earthquakes. Such issues highlight the need for ongoing exploration of novel shale gas extraction methods such as in situ heating through combustion or pyrolysis to mitigate operational and environmental concerns. In this study, thermally immature shales of contrasting organic richness from Rajmahal Basin of India were heated to different temperatures (pyrolysis at 350, 500 and 650 °C) to assess the temperature protocols necessary for hydrocarbon liberation and investigate the evolution of pore structural facets with implications for CO2 sequestration in underground thermally treated shale horizons. Our results from low-pressure N2 adsorption reveal reduced adsorption capacity in the shale splits treated at 350 and 500 ºC, which can be attributed to structural reworking of the organic matter within the samples leading to formation of complex pore structures that limits the access of nitrogen at low experimental temperatures. Consequently, for both the studied samples BET SSA decreased by ∼58% and 72% at 350 °C, and ∼67% and 68% at 500 °C, whereas average pore diameter increased by ∼45% and 91% at 350 °C, and ∼100% and 94% at 500 °C compared to their untreated counterparts. CO2 adsorption results, unlike N2, revealed a pronounced rise in micropore properties (surface area and volume) at 500 and 650 ºC (∼30%–35% and ∼41%–63%, respectively for both samples), contradicting the N2 adsorption outcomes. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images complemented the findings, showing pore structures evolving from microcracks to collapsed pores with increasing thermal treatment. Analysis of the SEM images of both samples revealed a notable increase in average pore width (short axis): by ∼4 and 10 times at 350 °C, ∼5 and 12 times at 500 °C, and ∼10 and 28 times at 650 °C compared to the untreated samples. Rock-Eval analysis demonstrated the liberation of almost all pyrolyzable kerogen components in the shales heated to 650 °C. Additionally, the maximum micropore capacity, identified from CO2 gas adsorption analysis, indicated 650 °C as the ideal temperature for in situ conversion and CO2 sequestration. Nevertheless, project viability hinges on assessing other relevant aspects of shale gas development such as geomechanical stability and supercritical CO2 interactions in addition to thermal treatment. The paper concerns the influence of heat treatment (annealing, quenching and aging) on the microstructure and hardness of flat bars samples from the CuAl10Ni5Fe4 alloy. The microstructures were observed in light and scanning electron microscopes. The appearance and area fractions of the martensite beta phase and their influence on the mechanical properties were examined. The annealing study at a temperature of 950 °C for 1 hour, followed by rapid quenching in water and subsequent tempering at a temperature of 350-500 °C for 15-120 minutes, demonstrated the potential for a significant increase in the hardness of aluminum bronze from approximately 200 HV3 up to 600 HV3. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effect of solidification cooling rate on the microstructural characteristics of IN939 superalloy. Microstructure of castings was investigated using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and field emission SEM microscopes, and the most important phases in the microstructure, their morphology and micro-mechanisms of formation of these phases were evaluated. In addition, thermodynamic simulation was carried out using JMatPro software to predict the type and amount of phases in different microstructural regions, the chemical compositions of γ and γ′ phases, as well as the γ/γ′ lattice misfits. The results showed that with increasing the cooling rate, MC carbides became more regular and more polygonal, while with decreasing cooling rates, carbides morphologies changed to Chinese script form. At cooling rates around 0.13 °C/s, the γ′ particles in dendrite cores were formed into coarse and cubic patterns, whereas in interdendritic regions, γ′ particles were observed as very coarse and flower-like structures. At cooling rates around 1.1 °C/s, the morphology of γ′ precipitates in the dendrite cores was mainly spherical, and in the interdendritic areas, γ′ precipitates were a mixture of spherical and cubic particles. It was shown that the major factors controlling the morphology of γ′ particles in different regions of the microstructure are the size of these particles combined with the γ/γ′ lattice misfit. Finally, the results showed that the following equation relates the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) to the solidification cooling rate (SCR) for IN939 superalloy: SDAS = 43.177 (SCR)−0.305. In this paper, the effects of frequency on the flash sintering behavior and microstructure of Li 6.4 Ga 0.2 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (0.2Ga-LLZO) were investigated. The results showed that an increase in frequency had little effect on the onset temperature, but this increase reduced the duration of the weak current stage the incubation stage. Moreover, this phenomenon led to a decrease in the power loss during the constant current stage. Scanning Electron Microscope images showed that the microstructure was symmetrically distributed, and the uniformity increased with increasing frequency. Finite element simulations and an IR thermocamera were used to analyze the temperatures of the specimens. The symmetric distribution of temperature during the flash sintering process was the root cause. The results of AC impedance spectroscopy showed that when the frequency of flash sintering was ≥ 400 Hz, the ionic conductivity of Ga-LLZO was greater than that of conventional sintering. Due to the molding-free property and dry shrinkage of extrusion-based three-dimensional printable concrete (3DPC), the precision issues of 3DPC have not been solved effectively. One of the viable solutions for 3DPC precision improvement is to print using ultra-thin filaments. The challenges of ultra-thin-filament printing are extrudability, flowability, and fast solidification. To overcome these challenges and enhance precision, a customized 3D concrete printer with an ultra-thin diameter nozzle (6 mm) and fully sealed extrusion system was developed, and the mix design of ultra-thin-filament 3DPC (UTF-3DPC) was studied, including ingredients such as fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF), ordinary Portland cement (OPC), sodium dodecyl sulfate and cellulose (SDSC), water reducer, water, and sand. The function of UTF-3DPCs flowability and fast solidification with the proportion of water and SDSC was explored to obtain the optimal mix design. The standard compressive and flexural strengths of UTF-3DPC specimens were compared with the mold-cast vibrated and the mold-cast non-vibrated concrete. Their meso-scale and micro-scale structures were analyzed to expose the strength mechanism, according to the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. A suitable mix design of UTF-3DPC was obtained and UTF-3DPC strength reached 80% of standard mold-cast concrete. The present project deals with the production of lateritic soil based bricks under different curing temperatures (28°C–150°C). A fraction of 10–30 wt% amount alkaline solution was added to improve the reactive phase content. The raw materials and hardened products were characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), fourrier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), mechanical properties and scanning electron microscope analysis. The results show that the addition of alkaline solution (30%) and the curing temperature (150°C) have a beneficial influence on physical properties (bulk density: 1.77 g/cm3, water absorption: 16.98%, and porosity: 30.13%) and mechanical performances (flexural: 6.61 MPa and compressive: 13.57 MPa). Compared with the code requirements for stabilized earth blocks, the compressive strength was higher than the minimum required. Microstructural investigations were also carried out to confirm the macrostructural properties. This study aims to investigate the microstructural, mechanical, and tribological characteristics of Al-nano TiC composites. The microwave-sintered nanocomposites were analyzed using optical and scanning electron microscopes, providing valuable insights into the spatial distribution and interaction of TiC within the matrix material. Microstructure characterization confirmed the uniform dispersion of nano TiC particles throughout the Al. Furthermore, the microwave-sintered nanocomposite samples displayed greater hardness than pure aluminum, indicating the strengthening impact of nano-TiC. Al-6 wt.% nanocomposites fabricated using microwave-sintered powder metallurgy showcased an impressive hardness rating of 51 VHN. The assessment of tribological properties revealed that a higher TiC concentration reduced wear rate, showcasing improved surface protection. However, it was observed that the friction coefficient rise with the addition of nano-TiC particles, implying changes in the bonding between the composite and the interacting surface. The thorough examination of worn surfaces yielded insights into the wear mechanisms present in the nanocomposite materials. Detailed examination of worn surfaces highlighted the formation of protective oxide layers, contributing to the improved wear resistance. The application of advanced high-strength steel grades (AHSS) in different kinds of industry is connected to more than their attractive mechanical properties. The present paper focuses on improving the welding Docol 1300M steel to reach an acceptable microstructure and mechanical parameters. It was decided to manufacture joints with different welding parameters using different filler materials. The electrode wires were varied to increase the carbon content in the weld, and nitrogen was added to the argon shielding mixture to obtain non-metallic inclusions that strengthen the fusion zone. Specimens of joints welded with the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process for non-destructive and destructive tests were examined. Tensile and bending tests as well as microscopic inspections using a light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were also conducted. The results from the fatigue test confirmed the validity of the proposed welding process for the Docol 1300M joint. The collected data enabled the following conclusion: The article's novelty is represented by the use of shielding gas mixtures containing argon and nitrogen in the GMAW welding process of AHSS steel to create titanium non-metallic inclusions, which will translate into better performance properties of the entire joint. In this paper, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-6.5Si-5.5Cu-0.2Zr-0.01Sr-0.06Ti-0.2Ce cast aluminum alloys were investigated in multistage solid solution systems. The microstructure of the alloy was characterized using an optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), respectively. The hardness and conductivity of the alloy were measured using a Vickers hardness and eddy current conductivity testers, respectively, and the tensile properties were described by a drawing machine. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the alloy are the worst under the four-stage solid solution system (G1). With the increase in multistage solution temperature and holding time, θ phase (Al2Cu) was gradually dissolved into α-Al matrix to enhance the effect of dislocation strengthening. When the solution temperature reached 510 °C, the mechanical properties of the alloy were the best, and the tensile strength and elongation were increased to 354.90 MPa and 9.02%, respectively. With the increase in temperature, eutectic Si agglomeration and large area of insoluble phase between metals were found, resulting in the decrease in mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, a near-dry electrical discharge machining (NDEDM) process has been conducted using compressed air mixed with a low quantity of biodegradable refined sunflower oil (called oil-mist) to investigate the machining characteristics. The Box-Behnken method looks at how oil flow rate (OR), air pressure (AR), spark current (SC), and pulse width (PW) affect gas emission concentration (GEC), material removal rate (MRR), and surface roughness (SR). The TOPSIS (The Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to the Ideal Solution) technique estimates the parameter optimal set for the best machining characteristics. The optimal machining parameters have been used to examine the microstructure of the machined surfaces using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. The 0.981 mg/min of GEC, 55.145 mg/min of MRR, and 2.43 µm of surface roughness have been attained by the 14 ml/min flow rate, 7 bar of air pressure, 10 A spark current, and 48 µs pulse duration of the sun-flower oil-mist NDEDM process. In order to enhance the hardness and wear resistance of Cr12MoV, Al2CrFeNiMo was designed and successfully prepared by laser cladding. Phase, microstructure, hardness and wear characteristics of the coating were analyzed by x-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope, Vickers hardness tester and reciprocating wear tester. The results indicated that the coating was composed of BCC and FCC phases having high lattice distortion and dislocation density. Microstructure of the coating presented the equiaxed grain which was rich in Fe, Cr and existed the segregation of Mo, Al, Ni. The coating demonstrated high hardness, with the values of 600 HV0.2, which was increased by 150% than that of the substrate. Compared with the substrate, the friction coefficient and wear volume of the coating were reduced by 48.9 and 91.32%, respectively. The wear mechanism of the coating was the abrasive wear. The effects of different quenching methods on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 30MnB5NbTi hot stamping steel are investigated, and the quenched microstructure is characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The mechanical properties are evaluated by uniaxial tensile test. The results reveal that, in comparison to die quenching, oil quenching, or air cooling, water‐quenched samples (tempered after water quenching, die quenching and oil quenching) exhibit the highest ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS), reaching 2052 and 1422 MPa, respectively. Various quenching methods enable multi‐level strength control for the same steel grade, achieving a strength control range of ≈1000 MPa. The microstructure of samples quenched by water, die, and oil is fully martensite, and martensite exhibited block and lath morphology. With the increase of cooling rate, martensite laths become finer and the prior austenite size decreased. The microstructure of air‐cooled samples is martensite, ferrite, and retained austenite. The strengthening mechanisms of different quenched samples are calculated. The results show that dislocation strengthening and precipitation strengthening are the two dominant strengthening mechanisms in 30MnB5NbTi hot stamping steel. Dirinaria picta is a lichen species known for its tolerance to air pollution and its ability to accumulate pollutants in its thallus, making it a suitable bioindicator in urban areas. This study aims to assess the response of lichens to air pollution by examining their morphological characteristics, analyzing the presence of magnetic grains, and identifying the origin of elements in their tissues. Samples were collected from three locations in Bandung area which represent polluted areas, namely Juanda Street (JD) and Kebon Kawung (KK), and Padalarang Street (PD) and one location which represent as a control area with low pollution levels, namely Curug Cimahi (CC). Lichen microstructure scanning was performed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and the presence of elements was detected through Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The SEM analysis revealed that samples from areas with higher air pollution levels exhibited obvious damage to their thallus, characterized by a more porous structure and the presence of cuboidal particles. Conversely, samples from control area showed a more compact structure. The EDS observations identified 14 elements present in the lichen tissues, ranked in descending order of abundance: C>Ca>O>Pb>Cu>Mn>Zn>Fe>Cr>Al>Cl>Se>Cd>K. The composition and quantity of these elements in lichen tissues were influenced by the level of air pollution generated by the number of vehicles passing through the area. This paper is a study of the mechanical properties and microstructures of the similar friction weld joints (TiAl6V4 and AA2024) using a servo-controlled Rotary Friction Welding (RFW) system. The friction welding operations were performed with seven different values of the friction pressure in the range of 2–14 MPa. The temperature is recorded during friction welding tests using k-type thermocouples. Tensile tests and microhardness measurements were carried out to obtain the mechanical properties of the friction weld joints. Microstructural changes of individual zone of the friction welds were investigated using an optical microscope (OM), and the fracture surfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). For AA2024, the fracture occurs most frequently in the central zone, resulting in lower tensile strength values, while for TiAl6V4, the fracture is occurs outside the friction weld interface, indicating that the friction weld joint is more resistant than the base metal. Microscopic analysis of the fracture surfaces of the AA2024 samples revealed diverse morphologies, with rough cupular surfaces predominating, indicating a dominant ductile fracture mode. Similarly, TiAl6V4's friction welded specimen also exhibited cupules of various sizes across its surface, primarily associated with a ductile fracture mode. Overall, the optimal friction pressure values (respectively 8 and 10 MPa for TiAl6V4 and AA2024) correspond to the highest values of the mechanical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate two distinct approaches for fiber radius estimation using diffusion-relaxation MRI data acquired in biomimetic microfiber phantoms that mimic hollow axons. The methods considered are the spherical mean power-law approach and a T2-based pore size estimation technique. Theory and Methods: A general diffusion-relaxation theoretical model for the spherical mean signal from water molecules within a distribution of cylinders with varying radii was introduced, encompassing the evaluated models as particular cases. Additionally, a new numerical approach was presented for estimating effective radii (i.e., MRI-visible mean radii) from the ground truth radii distributions, not reliant on previous theoretical approximations and adaptable to various acquisition sequences. The ground truth radii were obtained from scanning electron microscope images. Results: Both methods show a linear relationship between effective radii estimated from MRI data and ground-truth radii distributions, although some discrepancies were observed. The spherical mean power-law method overestimated fiber radii. Conversely, the T2-based method exhibited higher sensitivity to smaller fiber radii, but faced limitations in accurately estimating the radius in one particular phantom, possibly because of material-specific relaxation changes. Conclusion: The study demonstrates the feasibility of both techniques to predict pore sizes of hollow microfibers. The T2-based technique, unlike the spherical mean power-law method, does not demand ultra-high diffusion gradients, but requires calibration with known radius distributions. This research contributes to the ongoing development and evaluation of neuroimaging techniques for fiber radius estimation, highlights the advantages and limitations of both methods, and provides datasets for reproducible research. Understanding the modification mechanism of C9 petroleum resin (C9PR) on styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt properties is of significant importance. In this paper, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), storage stability, fluorescence morphology (FM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation were adopted to evaluate the rheological, chemical, and microstructure molecular motion state of C9PR and SBS composite modified asphalt at different aging states. The DSR storage results indicate that the addition of C9PR could improve the high-temperature property, storage stability, and temperature susceptibility. FM and SEM results indicate that the network microstructure was enhanced and the roughness between polymer resins and virgin asphalt was improved at the microscopic scale. The MD results indicate that the heterogeneity between C9PR and SBS modified asphalt was demonstrated, and the bonding energies were enhanced with the addition of C9PR. Moreover, the FTIR results indicate that new function groups were generated in addition to C9PR. The cement composite calcium lignosulfonate is used to enhance the mechanical properties and the freeze–thaw resistance of loess. Based on an unconfined compressive test under different freeze–thaw cycles, the influence of cement dosage, curing age, and freeze–thaw cycles on compressive strength are discussed. The results indicate that the strength of loess can increase by up to 13 times, and the loss of strength is reduced from 72% to 28% under the reinforcement of cement dosage and curing age. The loss of strength is mainly concentrated in the initial 5 freeze–thaw cycles, and the structure gradually stabilizes after 10 freeze–thaw cycles. In addition, according to the X-ray diffraction test, it is found that the stabilized loess exhibits a comparatively more stable mineral composition. The scanning electron microscope results reveal that hydration products enveloped the soil particles, forming a mesh structure that strengthens the connection between the soil particles. The freeze–thaw damage makes the small and medium pores turn into large pores in loess, while the stabilized loess changes micro and small pores into small and medium pores, with no large pores found. Incoloy 800 is a Fe-based super alloy used primarily in high-temperature applications like boilerplates due to its ability to maintain its austenitic phase. Samples of 100 × 20 × 5 mm were manufactured in vertical orientation using selective laser melting (SLM) and were annealed at 980 °C for 15 min. Annealed samples were cold rolled at room temperature, in multiple passes to 20, 40, 60 and 80% reduction in thickness, perpendicular to the building direction. The aim of this study is to understand the strain hardening effect upon rolling and also to know the effect of cold rolling on texture, microstructure and hardness after rolling the annealed alloy. Microstructural features were observed under optical microscope and scanning electron microscope while the texture measurement was done using X-ray goniometer. Typical fish scale morphology was observed in the transverse plane of as-built condition, which was diminished in annealed samples. SEM study shows fine grains along with traces of lamellar cell morphology. Hardness increased with an increase in percentage reduction. Austenite (γ) phase was detected as the only phase in XRD analysis. The bulk texture of annealed sample revealed strong copper texture until 40% rolling, and thereafter, it reduced. Incoloy 800 is an iron-based Ni-Cr super-austenitic stainless steel that finds applications involving exposure to high temperatures and corrosive environments. This study aims to investigate the effect of cold rolling on the microstructure, texture and hardness of Incoloy 800 fabricated by selective laser melting. Rectangular specimens of 100 × 20 × 5 mm were printed in the vertical build orientation. The as-built alloy was subjected to unidirectional cold rolling along the long transverse plane to achieve thickness reductions of 20, 40, 60 and 80%. Optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to observe the microstructure. EDS was used to find the elemental composition. An x-ray goniometer was used to measure the bulk texture. Vickers hardness test was performed to measure the hardness. The optical micrographs of the as-built sample revealed a laser scan track pattern on the top surface, whereas the short and long transverse sections revealed typical fish-scale morphology with overlapping melt pool boundaries. Melt pool widening was observed upon increasing the rolling percentage. Scanning electron microscope revealed three types of grain morphology–cellular, elongated cellular and columnar. X-ray diffraction revealed the presence of austenite (γ) phase. The as-built alloy showed cube, goss and copper texture components. The sample rolled to 80% reduction showed strong brass and a weakened goss component. In this study, we have employed friction stir processing to strategically modify the microstructure of AA-Mg alloys, resulting in a direct enhancement of their mechanical properties. The experiments encompassed a range of tool speeds ranging from 800 to 1600 rpm and feed rates ranging from 20 to 80 mm/min. Employing a single-pass approach across all combinations, samples were extracted from the stir zone region to evaluate hardness and wear characteristics. The evaluation involved Vickers hardness tests to quantify hardness and pin-on-disc tests to examine the tribological attributes of the specimens. The worn-out surfaces of the specimens were examined using scanning electron microscope imagery. There is a substantial increase in hardness when compared with the base material, i.e., 78 HVN is up to 96 HVN for 20 mm/min at 1200 rpm, 98 HVN for 20 mm/min at 800 rpm, 106 HVN for 60 mm/min at 1600 rpm and 96 HVN for 80 mm/min at 1600 rpm. Furthermore, the coefficient of friction increased from 0.341 for base materials to a maximum of 0.635, 0.667, 0.604, and 0.646 for the same combination of speed and feed rate, respectively. The tensile strength of polymer composites is basically influenced by the geometry (size and shape) of the reinforcing material as well as interfacial interaction and bonding between the polymer matrix and reinforcing phase. This work compares the effect of microfillers to nanofillers of coconut husk, bamboo and cotton linter on the tensile strength and microstructure of vulcanized rubber matrix. The various composites were formulated and prepared using filler loading of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 parts per hundred of rubber (pphr) in rubber matrix for both micro- and nano- fillers of the various biomass through friction shearing and compression moulding processes. Results revealed that the tensile strength of the nanocomposites predominantly increased from 1.85 MPa for neat sample to maximum values of 3.83, 3.16 and 3.85 MPa respectively for composites with 25pphr of coconut husk cellulosic nanoparticles (NR-CHNC25), 30pphr of bamboo cellulosic nanoparticles (NR-BNC30) and with 25pphr of cotton linter cellulosic nanoparticles (NR-CLNC25) conversely, the tensile strength of their counter microcomposites changes from 1.85MPa for neat sample to maximum values of 1.68, 1.67 and 2.46 MPa for composites with 10pphr of coconut cellulosic microparticles (NR-CHMC10) 15pphr of bamboo cellulosic microparticles (NR-BMC15) and 30pphr of cotton linter cellulosic microparticles (NR-CLMC30) respectively within the loading range employed in this experiment. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images of microcomposites showed cases of microfiller debonding and pull-out from the rubber matrix. Hence the improved tensile strength of nanocomposites over their counterpart microcomposites was attributed to the larger surface area provided by nanofillers for interfacial bonding and effective stress transfer. This study reports the synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HA)‐based bio‐composites reinforced with varying amounts (by weight, 1–15 wt.%) of bio‐medium entropy alloy (BioMEA) for load‐bearing implant applications. BioMEA powders consisting of Ti, Nb, Zr, and Mo were mechanically alloyed for 100 h and subsequently added to HA using powder metallurgy techniques. To show the effect of BioMEA, the microstructure, density, and mechanical tests have been conducted and the synthesized BioMEA was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), x‐ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. In addition, in vitro degradation behavior and bioactivity analyses of bio‐composites have been conducted. XRD analysis revealed the formation of BioMEA after 20 h of mechanical alloying. The highest density value of 2.47 g/cm3 was found in 15 wt.% BioMEA‐reinforced bio‐composite. The addition of BioMEA reinforcement led to a significant increase in hardness and tensile strength values, with the highest values observed at 15 wt.% reinforcement. Compression tests demonstrated a significant increase in compressive strength and deformation capability of the bio‐composites with the highest values observed at 15 wt.% BioMEA addition. The highest toughness of 7.68 kJ/m2 was measured in 10 wt.% MEA‐reinforced bio‐composites. The produced bio‐composite materials have an elastic modulus between 3.5–5.5 GPa, which may provide a solution to the stress shielding problems caused by the high elastic modulus of metallic implant materials. The most severe degradation occurred in 15 wt.% MEA‐reinforced bio‐composites, and the effect of degradation caused a decrease in Ca and an increase in Ti‐Ni‐Zr‐Mo in all bio‐composites. These findings suggest that HA/BioMEA bio‐composites have the potential to be developed as advanced biomaterials with moderate mechanical and biological properties for load‐bearing implant applications. This work aims to study the influence of heat treatment on the microstructure of laser metal deposited multi-layered Inconel 718 alloy. As-deposited samples were subjected to standard heat treatment, and the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties are studied. When observed under optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, the microstructure revealed microstructural homogenisation. In this case, the grain morphology shows that Nb-rich Laves phase in as-deposited sample is converted to small irregular granules in post heat treatment. The main finding of this study is that after heat treatment, the continuous bands of Nb-rich Laves phase are dissolved into small patches, as observed in elemental mapping through Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy. Also, Nb and Ti are distributed uniformly in the microstructure forming γ´ (Ni3Ti) and γ´´ (Ni3Nb) strengthening precipitates in Ni matrix. This research delved into the structural, morphological, and magnetic characteristics of rare earth doped strontium ferrites (SrRE x Fe 12-x O 19 (x = 0.05–0.2, RE = La, Sm, Eu, Dy, Er, Lu)) synthesized via the sol-gel method. The dopant ion radius is correlated with the performance of the material to a certain extent. Barium and calcium doping and related iron deficiency state experiments were designed to substantiate the reciprocal dependence between ion radius and coercivity. X-ray diffraction results revealed that doping ions had the capacity to modify lattice dimensions. The lattice size does not exhibit a clear linear relationship with the radius of the doping ion, nor does it inherently correlate with the grain size. The scanning electron microscope demonstrated that ion doping had the capacity to influence the size of grains. A general consequence of rare earth doping is the reduction in the saturation magnetization of strontium ferrites. The lanthanide contraction effect significantly influences the changes in coercivity. It is noteworthy that the variations in lattice internal space induced by doping constitute a primary driving factor for the observed coercivity dependence on the radius of the doping ion. To develop microwave‐absorbing properties of dielectric ceramics, B4C/C composite powders were prepared by combustion synthesis with B2O3, polyvinyl alcohol, and Mg as the raw materials in this work. The XRD, Raman, scanning electron microscope with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy, and VNA network analysis carried out the effects of the addition of azodicarbonamide (AC) foaming agent on the phase compositions, microstructure, and dielectric and microwave‐absorbing properties of the products. The results indicated that the addition of an AC foaming agent contributed to the formation of distinct morphologies with a larger specific surface area and uniform distribution of the free carbon in the B4C/C composite powders and improved its graphitization degree, which resulted in the formation of equivalent microcapacitors, enhanced interfacial polarization, improved conductive network, and leading to a low reflection loss (RL) and a broadened effective absorb bandwidth (EAB). Due to the dielectric loss as the dominant loss mechanism, C‐1.5 (1.5 wt.% AC foaming agent addition) exhibits the EAB of 3.02 GHz and the minimum RL (RLmin) of −22.90 dB at the thickness of 2.20 mm. In this work, microporous MgO–Al2O3 refractory aggregates were prepared with Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3 via the in situ decomposition synthesis method. The effect of Al(OH)3 addition on the microstructure and properties of microporous MgO–Al2O3 refractory aggregates was investigated with scanning electron microscope and mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results indicated that the improved green density of the samples and the reaction sintering accelerated the mass transport rate with adding Al(OH)3 from 0 to 4.0 wt%. Besides, a small amount of Al3+ diffused into porous MgO particles, accelerating the merging and growth of nanopores in the porous MgO particles. The intra‐particle pore size and the densification degree of microparticles were increased, and thus the strength of the samples was improved. Due to the formation of Kirkendall voids by interdiffusion of Mg2+ and Al3+, the inter‐particle pore size increased. Adding Al(OH)3 from 4.0 to 17.6 wt%, the Kirkendall voids weakened the mass transport rate and improved the inter‐particle pore size. The merging and growth of nanopores in the MgO particles were limited, resulting in the reduced intra‐particle pore size and increased intra‐particle pore number. The densification degree of microparticles was reduced, and thus the strength of the samples decreased. At the Al(OH)3 addition of 4.0 wt%, microporous MgO–Al2O3 refractory aggregates had the best comprehensive properties, a bulk density of 2.48 g/cm3, an apparent porosity of 29.4%, a median pore size of 1.6 μm with 42.2 vol% nanopores and the thermal conductivity of 4.0 W/(m K). The effect of quenching and aging on the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints obtained by laser welding of titanium alloy Grade 2 and aluminum alloy 2024 is studied. Microstructural analysis of the welded joints is carried out using light and scanning electron microscopes. The samples are tested on a slice. It is shown that during heat treatment, the columnar heat-affected zone of aluminum undergoes a significant change, in which the grain width increases from 5 – 7 to 20 – 40 μm, and the length from 30 – 100 to 100 – 200 μm. The shear strength of the welded joint after a heat treatment increases from 120 to 195 MPa, and the microhardness of the columnar heat-affected zone changes from 100 – 111 HV to 145 – 161 HV. The effect of the heat treatment on the distribution of chemical elements in the weld metal is not revealed, whereas the columnar heat-affected zone contains presumably a hardening Al2Cu phase. The wrought nickel–chromium–cobalt Nimonic 90 alloy is widely used in turbine blades, piston rings and forged tools due to their high stress-rupture strength and creep resistance up to 920∘C. The application components showed unavoidable wear behaviors at high loads due to the reduced resistance of the components. Hence, in order to increase the wear resistance of this alloy, Inconel 625 and Nimonic 90 particle depositions have been carried out on Nimonic 90 substrate through the laser-cladding techniques to study the microstructure, mechanical and tribological behaviors of alloys. The phases, microstructure and microhardness of the claddings were investigated by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and hardness test, respectively. Results showed that the mean thickness of the interfacial layer of Inconel 625 and Nimonic 90 was 18.51 ± 4 μ m and 90.68 ± 7 μ m, respectively. The microstructure of the cladding surfaces resulted in dendritic and interdendritic structures. An overall analysis found that the gamma-Ni and hard laves phases were presented in Inconel 625 and Nimonic 90 clad surfaces, respectively. Nimonic 90 clad surface had a high hardness and wear resistance compared with Inconel 625 clad surface and substrate due to the present hard laves phase. P91 and P92 steels are widely used in nuclear and thermal power plant's high-temperature (650–700 °C) operating components. The welding procedure, base plate composition, filler material composition, and post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) significantly affect the metallurgical characterization of weldments at room temperature. This work focuses on joining P91 and P92 steel by the TIG welding with filler ER90S-B9. The study analyzes the materialization of coarse-grained HAZ (CGHAZ), inter-critical HAZ (ICHAZ), and fine grained HAZ (FGHAZ) under welded and PWHT. PWHT was conducted at 840 °C for 2, 4 and 6h. An optical microscopic (OM) scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to characterize the welded and PWHT samples. It was perceived that the tensile strength of PWHT increased as the heat treatment times increased from 2 to 6 h, while the hardness value decreased accordingly. The maximum tensile strength (594.71 MPa) was observed in PWHT_6 h, while the minimum tensile strength (537.52 MPa) was perceived in the as-welded sample. The PWHT_6h reveals the minimum hardness values (271.12 HV) at the fusion zone among all the conditions. The WFZ consisted of an untampered lath martensitic grain structure, demonstrating an average hardness value of 314.15 HV in the PWHT_2h condition. The hardness value in CGHAZ samples for as-welded, PWHT_2h, PWHT_4h, and PWHT_6h was observed at 456.85, 436.81, 368.63, and 327.41 HV, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recycling crushed clay bricks (CCB) in concrete is a sustainable and cost-effective process. Huge quantities of crushed clay bricks waste cause many serious environmental problems around the world. To deal with this problem, crushed bricks were recycled in the concrete industry as an alternative to natural resources, and the brick powder was reused as a partial replacement for cement. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of crushed clay bricks on the characteristics of concrete. 7 concrete mixtures containing coarse crushed brick aggregate (CCBA) and fine crushed brick aggregate (FCBA) were prepared as a complete substitute for sand and dolomite, respectively. Clay brick powder (CBP) and silica fume were used as a partial substitute for cement by 5%, 10%, and 15% of its weight. The water-to-cement ratio was 0.35. For comparison, a control mixture was prepared. Various tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of concrete. The results showed that the workability of the different mixtures containing CCB decreased compared to that of the reference mixture. The compressive strength values of mixtures containing CCBA had a clear decrease compared to the reference mix at 7, 28, and 56 days of curing. The modulus of rupture results had the same path as compressive strength results. The thermal conductivity coefficient for mixtures including CCBA decreased compared to the control mix. Scanning Electron Microscope images indicated crystals of calcium silicate hydrate because of the pozzolanic interaction between the brick powder and the fine crushed clay bricks with calcium hydroxide. In order to study the effect of the preparation process on the microstructure and mechanical properties of metal hollow sphere composites (MHSCs), they were fabricated using different preparation processes (different holding times) by a pressure casting method. The physical parameters of the MHSCs were measured using a direct measurement method, and the phases and microstructure of the MHSCs were observed using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Moreover, the mechanical properties of MHSCs were analyzed by a Zwick/Roell Z2.5 microhardness tester and a universal testing machine. The microscopic morphology and composition analysis results showed that the microstructures of MHSCs varied by holding time, while the mechanical properties test results implied that the microhardness of the transition layer and the matrix increased with the extension of the holding time. However, the MHSCs held for 10 min exhibited the best compression performance. These observations indicated that the compressive properties of MHSCs were mainly dependent on the transition layer and the matrix, excluding the influence of metal hollow spheres, and that the transition layer had a significant impact on the compression performance of MHSCs. In order to investigate the effect of Co contents on the structure and cavitation erosion property, NiTiAlCrCoxN films were prepared by the magnetron sputtering system. The X-ray diffractometer (XRD), the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) were used to characterize the structure and morphology of the films. The nanoindenter and the scratch tester were used to analyze the mechanical properties of the films. Cavitation erosion experiments were carried out by the ultrasonic vibration cavitation machine. The results show that NiTiAlCrCoxN films with different Co contents have a simple face-centered cubic (FCC) structure and show a preferred orientation on the (200) crystal plane. The diffraction angle on the (200) crystal plane decreases and the interplanar spacing increases with the increase in Co content in NiTiAlCrCoxN films. NiTiAlCrCoxN films exhibit a typical columnar crystalline structure. With the increase in Co content, the nanohardness of the films increases and the elastic modulus of the films decreases, while the mass loss of cavitation erosion monotonously increases except for the film with a 1.2 Co molar ratio. The NiTiAlCrCo1.4N film has a minimum hardness of 13.264 GPa, a maximum elastic modulus of 253.22 GPa and a minimum mass loss of 0.72 mg in the cavitation erosion experiment. The NiTiAlCrCo1.4N film exhibits the best cavitation corrosion resistance because the addition of the Co element enhances the solid solution strengthening effect and the NiTiAlCrCox1.4N film with the biggest elastic modulus has better elasticity to reduce the micro jet impact.
