The advent of connected automated vehicles (CAVs) will introduce new possibilities for traffic management as it provides a wide variety of data that can be used by traffic network and fleet operators. Much of this data will be generated passively by vehicles and the infrastructure and exchanged between stations via wireless communication, i.e., Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X). This paper introduces a V2X-based traffic management approach based on slot management for vehicles. These slots are used to control the route choice and trajectory planning of CAVs over multiple organizational levels. After introducing the central principles that the management system model is based on, we test two lane change approaches for CAVs in order to derive rules for generating and controlling slots. A basic set of rules was defined that foremost resulted from evaluating the lane change behaviour of CAVs. The evaluation of the lane changes shows that omitting deviations in the driving behaviour of CAVs yields non-optimal results concerning traffic flow parameters, especially under highly congested conditions. Macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD)-based perimeter control has a potential to improve traffic throughput and relieve the overall congestion. In practice, not only the MFD but also the traffic demand suffers from a variety of inherent uncertainties. Hence, this paper aims to contrive a robust control technique to address the perimeter traffic flow control issue in the oversaturated region. To this end, an integral sliding mode control is proposed to drive the traffic state to the desirable condition. The developed strategy deals with practical issues such as finite time stability and range of uncertainty in both MFD and traffic demand. Theoretical analysis verifies that the developed integral sliding mode control approach can guarantee the finite time convergence of the traffic state to the desired one. The performance of the developed scheme is attested by considering various traffic scenarios with uncertain MFDs and traffic demand, in which a comparative performance study with the proportional and integral control method is conducted. It is indicated that the developed scheme can alleviate the congestion in the urban network and improve the throughput of the urban network. Practical Applications: The research presented in this article proposes a novel perimeter control technique designed to enhance traffic flow management in densely populated urban road networks, particularly during peak congestion times. By leveraging the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) and integral sliding mode control theory, the method significantly boosts traffic throughput and alleviates the impact of congestion. This advancement can be seamlessly integrated into current urban traffic management systems, leading to more efficient and convenient urban commutes. Additionally, it addresses the rise in vehicle emissions due to heavy traffic, aiding in the reduction of pollution and supporting sustainable development initiatives. The technique also curtails vehicle fuel consumption and cuts down on costs associated with congestion-related delays, thereby fostering resource optimization and economic growth within urban environments. Traffic control through video/image processing is a trending research topic within Intelligent Transportation Systems. The number of moving vehicles, the density of vehicles at the junctions, traffic anomalies, and traffic flow directly influence real-time traffic congestion. The primary goal of this work is to design an architecture that is simple and fast enough to use in real-time heterogeneous traffic scenes. The proposed methodology uses user-defined zones for determining vehicle occupancy and count based on traffic surveillance video. The angular integral projection function accompanies the background subtraction method for better localization. Traffic anomaly detection is implemented by incorporating intelligent sensor technology. Also, the skipping of frames at fixed intervals has increased the processing speed with minimal data loss. The compatibility with any Internet Protocol camera further distinguishes this approach from other state-of-the-art methods. The proposed algorithm has been tested on a publicly available traffic surveillance video dataset and real-time surveillance feeds. Experimental results from the real-time intersection scenes show an overall accuracy of 97.14% and an average processing speed of 92.91%. Efficient traffic signal management is crucial for regulating traffic flow and fostering sustainable development within road transportation systems. To address the challenges in traffic management, numerous studies have applied the Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC) technology, using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) to decrease vehicles' average waiting times. Nonetheless, the intricate nature of DRL, characterized by its extensive parameter connections, often complicates the assurance of real-time responsiveness. Additionally, by prioritizing reduced waiting times, these methods may overlook potential rises in queue lengths, risking congestion. In this paper, we propose an Efficient Double Broad Reinforcement Learning (E-DBRL) algorithm based on a Double Broad Q-Network (Double BQN) to alleviate the overestimation of action values common in Broad Reinforcement Learning (BRL). To enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE) of drivers, we develop a new reward function that optimizes the average waiting time and the range between the longest and shortest waiting times, thus avoiding the need for dimension normalization. Moreover, we conduct simulation experiments using actual traffic data collected from Hangzhou, China. The experimental results indicate that, compared to the traditional Double DQN, the proposed E-DBRL algorithm achieves a 45.78% reduction in the average training time per round and a 5.57% increase in the average rewards. In urban system management and public safety, accurate traffic flow forecasting is pivotal for real-world applications such as traffic control, resource-sharing scheduling platforms, and intelligent transportation systems. The challenge lies in effectively capturing complex spatio-temporal correlations. To address this, we introduce ST-DSTN, a novel spatial-temporal fusion attention-based deep neural network that significantly advances the current state-of-the-art. ST-DSTN utilizes three distinct temporal branches to capture temporal dependencies and a convolutional neural network to encapsulate spatial dependencies. Our innovative contribution includes a spatio-temporal fusion attention module, effectively modeling the dynamic spatio-temporal dependencies of traffic data, thus improving upon existing methods. Additionally, we propose a hierarchical fusion method that permeates the entire model, capturing complex correlations at various levels through multi-level fusion. Our comprehensive experiments on the BikeNYC dataset demonstrate ST-DSTN's superior performance, supported by numerical results that substantiate its improvement over current methods, surpassing the DeepSTN+ model by 4.31%. Reducing the speed of the vehicle can reduce the risk and severity of the collision. Automatic means of vehicle traffic operation control, such as automatic speed cameras, is one of the main methods to solve traffic violations such as speeding. This study takes the actual operation of the automated hardware complex for vehicle traffic control in the Russian Federation as the research objective, and discusses the impact of the application of automated hardware complex for vehicle traffic control on traffic safety. In the process of building the automated traffic flow monitoring system of urban agglomeration, it is necessary to form a set of methodology to evaluate the hardware complex of traffic infrastructure. According to the research results of the influence of vehicle traffic automation and control system on road safety, a model, method and algorithm were developed to evaluate the efficiency of automated hardware complex for vehicle traffic control. The relevant factors introduced into the intelligent transportation system for the overall evaluation of the application efficiency of the vehicle traffic operation control automation hardware complex were determined. A life cycle model of automated hardware complex for vehicle traffic operation control was established to evaluate its operation efficiency in the development stage of intelligent transportation system, and on this basis, the maneuverability standard of urban agglomeration traffic monitoring system management is determined. The results show that the number of hardware complexes used in vehicle traffic operation control has a positive impact on the road traffic accident rate. It is suggested that the standard of one hardware complex for every 6.5 thousand registered vehicles in this area should be used as an indicator of the equipment level of the integrated automated system for vehicle traffic control in this area. Connected and autonomous driving technologies offer a novel solution for intersection control optimization. Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can access signal plans and optimize trajectories to minimize delays and reduce fuel consumption. However, optimizing trajectories for individual vehicles significantly increases complexity, especially for joint optimization of traffic signals and vehicle trajectories. Given the current technical, regulatory, and policy constraints, a superior intersection management approach is necessary before fully automated driving is achieved. This paper introduces an adaptive coupling control (ACC) method based on vehicle platooning to optimize signal timings and vehicle trajectories in mixed traffic. Initially, vehicle platoon segmentation is conducted, led by CAVs. The study then proposes a single‐layer coupled optimization model based on vehicle platoons, simplifying the joint optimization model. To address logistic constraint difficulties, a linearization of the coupled model (LCM) method is developed. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the ACC method significantly reduces vehicle delay and fuel consumption. At high CAV penetration rates (0.8 < R <1) and high traffic volumes (over 900 pcu/h), vehicle platoon control delivers excellent performance, with delays and fuel consumption even lower than in a fully automated environment (R = 1). The economic impact of inefficient traffic control systems is significant owing to prolonged commute durations, and increased energy consumption. Traffic signal control systems (TSCSs) significantly influence traffic flows at intersections. Therefore, adaptive TSCSs (ATSCSs) that can adjust to traffic conditions in real‐time have been proposed as more efficient alternatives. However, the expensive implementation of these systems highlights the need for judicious investments in appropriate technologies and infrastructure. Therefore, a comprehensive technology roadmap should be built that guides the future development of traffic control and the infusion of technologies to address traffic needs. Additionally, as ATSCSs are developed and managed by local governments, the perspective of a government‐led technology roadmap is required to guide the roadmap development and implementation. Although studies have explored technology roadmaps across numerous sectors, the viewpoint of roadmap development guided by government entities is frequently neglected despite the role of these entities in shaping technological policies, underwriting research and development initiatives, and driving nationwide innovation strategies. In this study, a comprehensive framework is proposed for developing technology roadmaps tailored for systems and technologies led by governmental entities. This framework has been adapted from the Advanced Technology Roadmap Architecture (ATRA) and brought original adjustments thereby addressing the research gap. The study also presents strategic recommendations for the ATSCS implementation in South Korea, integrating systems engineering principles for a holistic approach to technological advancements. Global urbanization and increasing traffic volume have intensified traffic congestion throughout transportation infrastructure, particularly at toll plazas, highlighting the critical need to implement proactive transportation infrastructure solutions. Traditional toll plaza management approaches, often relying on manual interventions, suffer from inefficiencies that fail to adapt to dynamic traffic flow and are unable to produce preemptive control strategies, resulting in prolonged queues, extended travel times, and adverse environmental effects. This study proposes a proactive traffic control strategy using advanced technologies to combat toll plaza congestion and optimize traffic management. The approach involves deep learning convolutional neural network models (YOLOv7–Deep SORT) for vehicle counting and an extended short-term memory model for short-term arrival rate prediction. When projected arrival rates exceed a threshold, the strategy proactively activates variable speed limits (VSLs) and ramp metering (RM) strategies during peak hours. The novelty of this study lies in its predictive and adaptive capabilities, ensuring efficient traffic flow management. Validated through a case study at Ravi Toll Plaza Lahore using PTV VISSIMv7, the proposed method reduces queue length by 57% and vehicle delays by 47% while cutting fuel consumption and pollutant emissions by 28.4% and 34%, respectively. Additionally, by identifying the limitations of conventional approaches, this study presents a novel framework alongside the proposed strategy to bridge the gap between theory and practice, making it easier for toll plaza operators and transportation authorities to adopt and benefit from advanced traffic management techniques. With the increasing number of urban vehicles, as well as the current situation of non-intelligent traffic control systems, spatiotemporal non-uniform traffic resource occupation, and limited traffic planning and design, existing urban traffic planning methods cannot effectively solve problems such as frequent traffic congestion and uncontrollable commuting time for residents. In order to solve the above problems, this paper first constructs a multi-queue, multi-server queuing model based on the server vacation and a multi-hop cascaded queuing model from the perspective of local intersections and global commuting paths. We analyze the theoretical changes in passage delay costs at local intersections and on global commuting paths as a function of traffic flow and the random duration of traffic signals. On this basis, this article proposes a collaborative intelligent traffic planning algorithm based on artificial intelligence, which utilizes traffic sensors to dynamically perceive traffic congestion status and collaboratively plans the optimal duration of traffic signals and the optimal driving path of vehicles from both local and global perspectives, thereby maximizing the on-time arrival ratio of vehicles while ensuring the required commuting delay. The simulation results show that the proposed method can increase the on-time arrival ratio of vehicles by at least 20% compared to contrast methods while meeting the requirements relating to commuting delays. Due to the increasing demand for transportation, road renovation is inevitable, and the emergence of work zones has become the most common problem in traffic control. There are many research results on the impact of work zones on traffic operation, but most of them focus on various capacity theoretical models or traffic flow control strategies and are mostly concentrated in highway work areas and urban road subway construction work areas. The location of these work zones is often unable to be changed and is mostly considered reasonable. At present, there is still a gap in selecting and evaluating the location of the work zone. Therefore, this article studied a bidirectional six-lane intersection in Xi'an and investigated the situation of traffic flow distortion caused by the setting of work zones at the intersection. Two different positions and forms of work zones were designed for evaluation and analysis. Firstly, we used VISSIM (2022 student) to simulate the original and proposed work zone road-occupation schemes and analyzed six indicators. Finally, in order to determine the optimal work zone locations under different traffic situations, we applied the entropy weight method (EWM) to assign weights to multiple indicators, thereby achieving a comprehensive assessment of various schemes. The results showed that the highest improvement level among the six indicators was 50.2%, and different schemes adapted to different traffic situations. However, occupying two lanes of the median opposite the exit lane performed better under high traffic volume. Occupying the median and lanes on both sides of the median is suitable for low traffic volume. Vehicle trajectory prediction can provide important support for intelligent transportation systems in areas such as autonomous driving, traffic control, and traffic flow optimization. Predicting vehicle trajectories is an extremely challenging task that not only depends on the vehicle's historical trajectory but also on the dynamic and complex social-temporal relationships of the surrounding traffic network. The trajectory of the target vehicle is influenced by surrounding vehicles. However, existing methods have shortcomings in considering both time dependency and interactive dependency between vehicles or insufficient consideration of the impact of surrounding vehicles. To address this issue, we propose a hybrid deep learning model based on a temporal convolutional network (TCN) that considers local and global interactions between vehicles. Specifically, we use a social convolutional pooling layer to capture local interaction features between vehicles and a multihead self-attention layer to capture global interaction features between vehicles. Finally, we combine these two features using an encoder-decoder structure to predict vehicle trajectories. Existing transportation infrastructure and traffic control systems face increasing strain as a result of rising demand, resulting in frequent congestion. Expanding infrastructure is not a feasible solution for enhancing the capacity of the road. Hence, Intelligent Transportation Systems are often employed to enhance the Level of Service (LoS). One such approach is Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control. VSL increases the LoS and safety on motorways by optimizing the speed limit according to the traffic conditions. The proliferation of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) presents fresh prospects for improving the operation and measurement of traffic states for the operation of the VSL control system. This paper introduces a method for the detection of multiple congested areas that is used for state estimation for a dynamically positioned VSL control system for urban motorways. The method utilizes Q-Learning (QL) and CAVs as mobile sensors and actuators. The proposed control approach, named Congestion Detection QL Dynamic Position VSL (CD-QL-DPVSL), dynamically detects all of the congested areas and applies two sets of actions, involving the dynamic positioning of speed limit zones and imposed speed limits for all detected congested areas simultaneously. The proposed CD-QL-DPVSL control approach underwent an evaluation across six distinct traffic scenarios, encompassing CAV penetration rates spanning from 10 % to 100 % and demonstrated a significantly better performance compared to other control approaches, including no control, rule-based VSL, two Speed-Transition-Matrices-based QL-VSL configurations with fixed speed limit zone positions, and a Speed-Transition-Matrices-based QL-DVSL with a dynamic speed limit zone position. Many countries face the traffic related issues regardless of the wide effects adopted for developing and improving the traffic flow. Depending on the drawbacks of existing traffic management systems like inefficient time management, absence of priority options and lack of dynamic and adaptive services, the need for the incorporation of intelligent concepts is mandatory. This facilitates the replacing of traditional approaches with an array of sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) through vehicle traffic control system. In this paper, the intelligent traffic system (ITS) is proposed on the basis of techniques such as internet of vehicles (IOV) and vehicular adhoc network (VANET). A road side unit (RSU) controller connected with the traffic control system acts as the key component of ITS. The on board unit (OBU) is fixed with each vehicle, which exchanges the real time information with RSU (road side unit) and other OBUs. Additionally, an adaptive traffic management algorithm (ATMA) is provided to govern the ITS for the generation of high performance outputs. Furthermore effectiveness of ATMA in the proposed work is proved by simulation using Python. Eventually, the ATMA is compared with fixed-time (FT) algorithm and traffic signal control algorithm (TSCA) under various traffic conditions. The findings depicts that the proposed ATMA-based ITS outperforms the current traffic management systems in terms of average waiting time (AWT) obtained as 277.5s with respect to number of vehicles and 282.14s with respect to number of roads at an intersection. Smart cities can effectively improve urban life quality. But, with the rise in population size, there is an increase in the use of vehicles for transportation. In smart city development, traffic control and route planning are the primary tasks to address the problem of travel time estimation. It has become complex due to concerns of wrapped spatio-temporal data on dynamic real-time traffic conditions. The existing methods failed to estimate travel time efficiently due to not considering the spatio-temporal features and lack of computing resources. There is a need for a system like intelligent transportation system to monitor and accurately predict traffic flow to avoid traffic congestion and reduce the impact on the ecological system. This paper developed a novel hybrid deep learning model to estimate optimized travel time and possible trajectories. In this work, U-Net used to reduce the number of feature points for each temporal data and GNN is used to build the graph with connectivity between vehicular nodes. This hybrid model helps us predict traffic flow and aims to estimate accurate travel time from one location (node) to another. The model's performance is evaluated on the standard benchmark datasets Q-Traffic, TaxiBJ, and Chengdu. The experimental results show that the proposed framework significantly improves performance in extracting travel patterns and provides an optimal route with an estimated travel time than existing methods with RMSE 4%, MAE 20.49%, and MAPE 18%. Traffic flow prediction plays an important role in intelligent transportation systems and is of great significance in the applications of traffic control and urban planning. Due to the complexity of road traffic flow data, traffic flow prediction has been one of the challenging tasks to fully exploit the spatiotemporal characteristics of roads to improve prediction accuracy. In this study, a combined flow direction level traffic flow prediction graph convolutional network (GCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) model based on spatiotemporal characteristics is proposed. First, a GCN model is employed to capture the topological structure of the data graph and extract the spatial features of road networks. Additionally, due to the capability to handle long-term dependencies, the longterm memory is used to predict the time series of traffic flow and extract the time features. The proposed model is evaluated using real-world data, which are obtained from the intersection of Liuquan Road and Zhongrun Avenue in the Zibo High-Tech Zone of China. The results show that the developed combined GCNLSTM flow direction level traffic flow prediction model can perform better than the single models of the LSTM model and GCN model, and the combined ARIMA- LSTM model in traffic flow has a strong spatiotemporal correlation. Accurate assessment of road conditions can effectively alleviate traffic congestion and guide people's travel plans, traffic control decisions of transportation departments, and formulation of traffic-related laws and regulations. This paper proposes a quantum particle swarm optimization (QPSO) and adaptive hybrid exponential smoothing with residual correction (AHES-RC) for the nonlinearity and randomness of traffic flow. In the proposed algorithm, the single–double-exponential smoothing method is mixed with adaptive weights to form AHES, a new method of mixing weights according to real-time traffic trend changes. After the residual correction of AHES is calculated by the extreme learning machine algorithm, the parameters of AHES-RC are optimized using QPSO to improve the prediction accuracy further. This paper comprehensively compares the QPSO-AHES-RC algorithm with other benchmark models through testing on 26 real-world data sets. The results show that the proposed algorithm can adaptive forecasting under various traffic conditions, yielding the best forecasting performance in terms of various forecast error metrics. Compared with advanced machine learning algorithms such as XGBoost and CatBoost, the mean RMSE and mean MAPE have been improved by over 20% on average. Increasing congestion levels and their elusive impact warrants the development of congestion mitigation strategies. Quantifying congestion and analyzing the spatiotemporal variations is imperative to achieve this target. Travel time is being explored as a measure of congestion with the advent of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and the deployment of related technologies. Researchers identified congested conditions when the average travel time exceeds 1.33 or 1.66 times free-flow travel time (FFTT). It is well known that travel time under congested conditions (T c) is more sensitive to land use, road geometry, and traffic control characteristics than the FFTT. Therefore, the extension of FFTT to derive T c may not be appropriate. This study focuses on developing a hazard-based model to derive T c. Travel time is modeled using a parametric accelerated failure time (AFT) model. The applicability of the proposed methodology is justified using empirical and simulated datasets. The T c derived from the AFT model is close to the travel time for the level of service (LOS F). Based on the T c , a new measure of congestion, termed congestion index (CI), is proposed. The proposed index can quantify the frequency and intensity of congestion on a link or network. The traffic states identified based on CI were mapped on the fundamental diagram (FD) and the macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD). It was concluded that if travel times are uncertain and unstable under low-density conditions, then the ascending leg of the FD or MFD can be marked congested. Uncertain and unstable travel times indicate that traffic flow is unstable, and therefore, it can be concluded that traffic instabilities significantly affect congestion. • A hazard-based duration model is applied to model travel times to derive travel time under congested conditions. • Travel time corresponding to the inflection point of hazard function was considered as travel time under congested conditions. • Instabilities in travel times under low-density conditions mark the ascending leg of the fundamental diagram as congested. • The application of the study is demonstrated by evaluating the effect of traffic signal control. Short-term traffic flow prediction plays a significant role in various applications of intelligent transportation systems (ITS), such as road traffic control and route guidance. This requires the development of intelligent prediction approaches for accurate and timely traffic flow information. To handle this issue, this paper emphasizes the potential of a new idea to propose a high-quality and intelligent prediction of short-term traffic flow in ITS. The proposed model, referred to as ITS-Pro-Flow, takes the benefits of the well-known Profile-Energy (Pro-Energy) as a landmark solution, relying on past observations and current conditions to forecast future short-term traffic flow volume. ITS-Pro-Flow has an effective prediction mechanism due to its unique enhancements over Pro-Energy. The distinctive feature of ITS-Pro-Flow is that it dynamically adjusts the contributions of past predictions and current observations for a particular prediction, which is equally performed in Pro-Energy. We prove the performance of ITS-Pro-Flow through extensive simulations with 2 datasets, in comparison to Pro-Energy and IPro-Energy. This paper aims to investigate the influence of time delay effect and steady flow control strategy on traffic flow. Consider that the time delay in sensing flux information during the operation of traffic system is inevitable. Meanwhile, a new method is applied to model and analyse traffic system. A novel discrete‐time lattice hydrodynamic model considering time delay is introduced in this paper. Based on the proposed model with constant and varying time‐delay, the asymptotic stabilities are investigated and corresponding stable conditions are derived. The traffic flow evolution trend with and without time delay is conducted and compared by numerical simulations. Also, under the influence of different control gain conditions, density wave characteristics for traffic flow system with time delay are intuitively shown. Accurate travel time prediction (TTP) is a significant aspect in the intelligent transportation system (ITS). Travel times of certain road segments explicitly reflect the traffic conditions of those sections. Effective TTP of road segments is instrumental in route planning, traffic control, and traffic management. However, the accuracy of TTP is greatly affected by the intricate topological structure of traffic network and the dynamics of traffic flow over time. This paper develops a TTP method based on the spatial-feature-based hierarchical clustering (SFHC) and deep multi-input gated recurrent unit (DMGRU). The proposed two-stage method is capable of capturing the spatial-temporal features of traffic network. Specifically, the SFHC divides the road segments into several clusters having similar traffic features, and then the clustered data is fed into the DMGRU for TTP. Our experiments conducted on the practical dataset demonstrate that the designed prediction method can achieve the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 3.3109% and mean absolute error (MAE) of 2.5658, which outperform various combinations of baseline clustering algorithms and prediction models. Traffic flow prediction is one of the most important tasks of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) for traffic management, and it is also a challenging task affected by many complex factors, such as weather and time. Many cities adopt efficient traffic prediction methods to control traffic congestion. However, most of the existing methods of traffic prediction focus on urban road scenarios, neglecting the complexity of multivariate auxiliary information in highways. Moreover, these methods have difficulty explaining the prediction results based only on the historical traffic flow sequence. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel traffic prediction model, namely Multi-variate and Multi-horizon prediction based on Long Short-Term Memory (MMLSTM). MMLSTM can effectively incorporate auxiliary information, such as weather and time, based on a strategy of multi-horizon time spans to improve the prediction performance. Specifically, we first exploit a multi-horizon bidirectional LSTM model for fusing the multivariate auxiliary information in different time spans. Then, we combine an attention mechanism and multi-layer perceptron to conduct the traffic prediction. Furthermore, we can use the information of multivariate (weather and time) to provide interpretability to manage the model. At the same time, the parameters estimation and modelling steps of the novel model are obtained by matrix analysis and recursion. A set of data is used from two perspectives to verify the proposed model's effectiveness. Experimental results show that the proposed model is stable and effective. Finally, the novel model is applied to the short-time traffic flow simulation and prediction of the highway. The research results show that the novel model is better than other comparison models. The novel model mainly aims at the matrix data form of traffic flow and is applied to general short-term traffic flow prediction. Current transport infrastructure and traffic management systems are overburdened due to the increasing demand for road capacity, which often leads to congestion. Building more infrastructure is not always a practical strategy to increase road capacity. Therefore, services from Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) are commonly applied to increase the level of service. The growth of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) brings new opportunities to the traffic management system. One of those approaches is Variable Speed Limit (VSL) control, and in this paper a VSL based on Q-Learning (QL) using CAVs as mobile sensors and actuators in combination with Speed Transition Matrices (STMs) for state estimation is developed and examined. The proposed Dynamic STM-QL-VSL (STM-QL-DVSL) algorithm was evaluated in seven traffic scenarios with CAV penetration rates ranging from 10 % to 100 % . The proposed STM-QL-DVSL algorithm utilizes two sets of actions that include dynamic speed limit zone positions and computed speed limits. The proposed algorithm was compared to no control, rule-based VSL, and two STM-QL-VSL configurations with fixed VSL zones. The developed STM-QL-DVSL outperformed all other control strategies and improved measured macroscopic traffic parameters like Total Time Spent ( T T S ) and Mean Travel Time ( M T T ) by learning the control policy for each simulated scenario. Cooperation between intersections in large-scale road networks is critical in traffic congestion. Currently, most traffic signals cooperate via pre-defined timing phases, which is extremely inefficient in real-time traffic scenarios. Most existing studies on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) traffic signal control have focused on designing efficient communication methods, but have ignored the importance of how agents interact in cooperative communication. To achieve more efficient cooperation among traffic signals and alleviate urban traffic congestion, this study constructs a Graph Cooperation Q-learning Network Traffic Signal Control (GCQN-TSC) model, which is a graph cooperation network with an embedded self-attention mechanism that enables agents to adjust their attention in real time according to the dynamic traffic flow information, perceive the traffic environment quickly and effectively in a larger range, and help agents achieve more effective collaboration. Moreover, the Deep Graph Q-learning (DGQ) algorithm is proposed in this model to optimize the traffic signal control strategy according to the spatio-temporal characteristics of different traffic scenes and provide the optimal signal phase for each intersection. This study also integrates the ecological traffic concept into MARL traffic signal control, which aims to reduce traffic exhaust emissions. Finally, the proposed GCQN-TSC is experimentally validated both in a synthetic traffic grid and a real-world traffic network using the SUMO simulator. The experimental results show that GCQN-TSC outperforms other traffic signal control methods in almost all performance metrics, including average queue length and waiting time, as it can aggregate information acquired from collaborative agents and make network-level signal optimization decisions. Developing transportation systems (TSs) under the structure of a wireless sensor network (WSN) along with great preponderance can be an Achilles' heel from the standpoint of cyber-attacks, which is worthy of attention. Hence, a crucial security concern facing WSNs embedded in electrical vehicles (EVs) is malware attacks. With this in mind, this paper addressed a cyber-detection method based on the offense–defense game model to ward off malware attacks on smart EVs developed by a wireless sensor for receiving data in order to control the traffic flow within TSs. This method is inspired by the integrated Nash equilibrium result in the game and can detect the probability of launching malware into the WSN-based EV technology. For effective realization, modeling the malware attacks in conformity with EVs was discussed. This type of attack can inflict untraceable detriments on TSs by moving EVs out of their optimal paths for which the EVs' power consumption tends toward ascending thanks to the increasing traffic flow density. In view of this, the present paper proposed an effective traffic-flow density-based dynamic model for EVs within transportation systems. Additionally, on account of the uncertain power consumption of EVs, an uncertainty-based UT function was presented to model its effects on the traffic flow. It was inferred from the results that there is a relationship between the power consumption and traffic flow for the existence of malware attacks. In urban traffic management, the primary challenge of dynamically and efficiently monitoring traffic conditions is compounded by the insufficient utilization of thousands of surveillance cameras along the intelligent transportation system. This paper introduces the multi-level Traffic-responsive Tilt Camera surveillance system (TTC-X), a novel framework designed for dynamic and efficient monitoring and management of traffic in urban networks. By leveraging widely deployed pan–tilt-cameras (PTCs), TTC-X overcomes the limitations of a fixed field of view in traditional surveillance systems by providing mobilized and 360-degree coverage. The innovation of TTC-X lies in the integration of advanced machine learning modules, including a detector–predictor–controller structure, with a novel Predictive Correlated Online Learning (PiCOL) methodology and the Spatial–Temporal Graph Predictor (STGP) for real-time traffic estimation and PTC control. The TTC-X is tested and evaluated under three experimental scenarios (e.g., maximum traffic flow capture, dynamic route planning, traffic state estimation) based on a simulation environment calibrated using real-world traffic data in Brooklyn, New York. The experimental results showed that TTC-X captured over 60% total number of vehicles at the network level, dynamically adjusted its route recommendation in reaction to unexpected full-lane closure events, and reconstructed link-level traffic states with best MAE less than 1.25 vehicle/hour. Microscopic traffic flow modeling is crucial for predicting future traffic demand and optimizing the design of transportation systems. At the microscopic level, a well-crafted model is capable of describing the interactions and dynamic variations among vehicles with greater accuracy. The cell scale in the classical cellular automaton (CA) multi-lane traffic flow model is a critical parameter to accurately express the location relationship of vehicles. In this paper, a new method based on Symmetric Two-lane Cellular Automaton (STCA), entitled STCA-X, is proposed for the cell scale selection. Firstly, the position, velocity, acceleration, and interaction of vehicle operation in the urban multi-lane environment are analyzed, and a feature model is built based on CA. One important drawback of the existing models is that they do not match the vehicle movement in the actual lane. To handle this problem, a fine-scale CA multi-lane model is developed. Secondly, a new traffic flow model is created by redefining several key behaviors such as road following, lane changing, and blocking in the STCA model. The experimental results are analyzed and compared with several of the state-of-the-art methods. Analysis of the simulation results proves that STCA-X improves vehicle lane change frequency and lane utilization efficiency. However, the enhancements in the model have resulted in increased computational complexity. One of the most serious and worsening problems in much of the world is traffic congestion, which represents an undoubted menace to the quality of urban life, including wasting of time, and environmental pollution. Therefore, this study proposes a new dynamic cooperative traffic control algorithm based on Vehicle-to-Infrastructure connections to solve this problem. The proposed model contains three parts. First of all, when each vehicle enters the communication zone, it sends its estimated range of arrival time to the control center in the intersection; then the optimal passing sequence is calculated in the control center by dynamically grouping the compatible trajectories with the respect of the related safety constraints; finally, each vehicle optimizes its appropriate speed profile based on the given optimal time and speed to enter the intersection, which is sent by the control center. Several simulation cases are executed for different traffic volumes, whose results prove that vehicles under the proposed algorithm can pass the intersection with less travel time compared with traditional traffic control methods and other algorithms. In recent years, the growing development of Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV), Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), and 5G communication networks have led to the advent of Autonomous Intersection Management (AIM) systems. AIMs present a new paradigm for CAV control in future cities, taking control of CAVs in scenarios where cooperation is necessary and allowing safe and efficient traffic flows, eliminating traffic signals. So far, the development of AIM algorithms has been based on basic control algorithms, without the ability to adapt or keep learning new situations. To solve this, in this paper we present a new advanced AIM approach based on end-to-end Multi-Agent Deep Reinforcement Learning (MADRL) and trained using Curriculum through Self-Play, called advanced Reinforced AIM (adv.RAIM). adv.RAIM enables the control of CAVs at intersections in a collaborative way, autonomously learning complex real-life traffic dynamics. In addition, adv.RAIM provides a new way to build smarter AIMs capable of proactively controlling CAVs in other highly complex scenarios. Results show remarkable improvements when compared to traffic light control techniques (reducing travel time by 59% or reducing time lost due to congestion by 95%), as well as outperforming other recently proposed AIMs (reducing waiting time by 56%), highlighting the advantages of using MADRL. Traffic prediction is the key for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to achieve traffic control and traffic guidance, and the key challenge is that traffic flow has complex spatial-temporal dependence and nonlinear dynamics. Aiming at the lack of the ability to model complex and dynamic spatial-temporal dependencies in current research, this paper proposes a traffic flow prediction model Attention based Graph Convolution Network (GCN) and Transformer (AGCN-T) to model spatial-temporal network dynamics of traffic flow, which can extract dynamic spatial dependence and long-distance temporal dependence to improve the accuracy of multistep traffic prediction. AGCN-T consists of three modules. In the spatial dependency extraction module, according to the similarity of historical traffic flow sequences of different loop detectors, an adjacency matrix for the road network is constructed based on a sequence similarity calculation method, Predictive Power Score (PPS), to express latent spatial dependency; and then GCN is used on the adjacency matrix to capture the global spatial correlation and Transformer is used to capture dynamic spatial dependency from the most recently flow sequences. And then, the dynamic spatial dependency is merged with the global spatial correlation to obtain the overall spatial dependency pattern. In the temporal dependency extraction module, the temporal dependency pattern of each traffic flow sequence is learned by the temporal Transformer. The prediction module integrates both patterns to form spatial-temporal dependency patterns and performs multistep traffic flow prediction. Four sets of experiments are performed on three actual traffic datasets to show that AGCN-T can effectively capture the dynamic spatial-temporal dependency of the traffic network, and its prediction performance and efficiency are better than existing baselines. With the acceleration of urbanization and the development of the automobile industry, the contradiction between the traffic capacity of existing urban roads and the growing traffic demand has become increasingly acute. Traffic congestion is becoming increasingly prominent. The purpose of this article is to consider the characteristics of traffic risk factors and to study the method of establishing a flexible traffic system. It can relieve traffic congestion and provide a smooth and orderly traffic environment using intelligent transportation systems to control and direct traffic flow. Based on the large urban road network, this research uses the theory of coordinated control and learning mechanism, fuzzy control, dynamic reprogramming, and other theories to study phase sequence, balance peripheral load, and overall traffic flow. It also uses on-board sensors to optimize the collection and processing of network information, decompose traffic guidance work, select the optimal route, and autonomously guide the intelligent transportation system. Under the flexible demand scheme, the average load of the trunk road is reduced by a larger degree, which is 4% lower than that of the fixed demand scheme. At the same time, the average load of the branch has increased more, which is 4% higher than that of the fixed demand scheme. It can be seen that under the elastic demand scheme, the distribution of traffic flow in the road network is more balanced and the optimization effect of relieving traffic pressure on trunk roads and improving the utilization rate of branch roads is more significant. Traffic volume data are the important part of research and application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, data loss often happens due to various factors in the real world, which may cause large deviations in prediction or bad accuracy of optimizations. Imputation is a valid way to handle missing values. A multilayer perceptron-multivariate imputation of chain equation (MLP-MICE) regression imputation method optimized by the limit-memory-BFGS algorithm is proposed, considering the temporal and spatial characteristics of traffic volume. Also, 32 groups of simulated imputation experiments based on the detected traffic volume of road sections in the Guangdong freeway system are conducted, which take the scenarios of continuous missing and jumped missing into account. The results of the experiments show that the MLP-MICE can optimize the imputation performance in the missing value of traffic volume with the MAPE of imputation results from 6.38% to 30%. Meanwhile, the proposed model has higher imputation accuracy for the traffic volume data with a lower degree of mutation. Lastly, the performance of the proposed model of imputation in short-term traffic volume prediction is discussed using the support vector machine. The results of it show that the MAPE of prediction under the proposed model is much lower than all-zero imputation. In the last decades, the Italian road transport system has been characterized by severe and consistent traffic congestion and in particular Rome is one of the Italian cities most affected by this problem. In this study, a Leven berg Marquardt (LM) artificial neural network heuristic model was used to predict the traffic flow of non-autonomous vehicles. Traffic datasets were collected using both inductive loop detectors and video cameras as acquisition systems and selecting some parameters including vehicle speed, time of day, traffic volume and number of vehicles. The model showed a training, test and regression value (R² ) of 0.99892, 0.99615 and 0.99714 respectively. Understanding the resilience of transportation networks has received considerable research attention. Nevertheless in the field of network traffic flow control, few control approaches target the mitigation from hyper-congestion, and the control objective has rarely touched the system resilience requirement which focuses on system recovering from hyper-congested state. This paper sheds light on a resilience-oriented network control. We firstly define the traffic resilience as the integral of deviation against optimal state from disturbance generation moment t 0 to recovery moment t f. Then, we propose a control method under hyper-congested situations by formulating the analytical problem using a two-reservoir transportation system with parabola-shaped Macroscopic Fundamental Diagrams (MFDs), using phase diagram analysis, attraction region derivation and switched controller design. Afterwards, we evaluate the system resilience performances between two classic perimeter control schemes (constant perimeter control (CPC) and state-feedback control (SFC)) and the proposed resilient control scheme. Results show that proposed controller can ensure the system to recover from hyper-congestion to the optimal state while existing studies failed to recover. This resilience is confirmed in various case study scenarios, e.g., when the level of hyper-congestion is different. More promisingly, the proposed control shows high compatibility with the form of the MFDs, e.g., the recover can be achieved under hysteresis conditions which are common for network-level traffic dynamics. Improving the efficiency of traffic signal control is an effective way to alleviate traffic congestion at signalized intersections. To achieve effective management of the system-wide traffic flows, current research tends to focus on applying reinforcement learning (RL) techniques for collaborative traffic signal control in a traffic road network. However, the existing collaboration-based methods often ignore the impact of transmission delay for exchanging traffic flow information on the system. Most of the studies assume that the signal controllers can collect all instantaneous vehicular features without delay. To fill the gap, we propose an RL-based cooperative traffic signal control scheme considering the data transmission delay issue in a traffic road network. In this paper, we (1) design our new RL agents to cooperatively control the traffic signals by improving the reward and state representation based on the state-of-the-art max-pressure control theory; (2) propose a traffic state prediction method to address the data transmission delay issue by decreasing the discrepancy between the real-time and delayed traffic conditions; (3) evaluated the performance of our proposed work on both synthetic and real-world scenarios with a different range of data transmission delays. Traffic flow forecasting (TFF) is critical for constructing intelligent transportation systems and offering real-time traffic applications, and especially accurate flow forecasting based on traffic big data can drive reliable strategies for traffic management and control. To consider the weight of the influence of the spatial correlation among the road segments and capture the nonlinear characteristics of traffic flow, this paper presents a parallel Normal Distribution and Attention Mechanism Weighted Deep Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (NAW-DBLSTM) algorithm on Spark. Specifically, we employ the resilient distributed data set (RDD) to preprocess large-scale mobile trajectory data (e.g., taxi GPS trajectory data), and then Kalman Filter (KF) is utilized to smooth the taxi trajectory big data. Next, the parallel NAW-DBLSTM algorithm is put forward on a Spark distributed computing platform to enhance the accuracy and scalability of TFF, combined with the attention mechanism and the normal distribution, and then the time window is used for TFF. Finally, the traffic flow is forecasted successfully on Spark by our NAW-DBLSTM algorithm with the real-world GPS trajectories of taxicabs. The experimental results demonstrate that, compared with LSTM, BiLSTM, DBLSTM, DNN, SVR, KNN, SAEs, BP, CNN, GRU, and ANNs, NAW-DBLSTM can produce better performance with the MAPE value that is 85.1%, 80.1%, 85.8%, 73.1%, 78.2%, 77.9%, 78.8%, 84.6%, 96.4%, 86.2%, and 73.2% lower than that of comparable algorithms, respectively. Particularly, the MAPE value of NAW-DBLSTM is 28.3%, 20.1%, 71.1%, and 79.1% lower than that of LSTM weighted with the normal distribution and the attention mechanism (NAW-LSTM), BiLSTM weighted with the normal distribution and the attention mechanism (NAW-BiLSTM), DBLSTM weighted with the normal distribution (NW-DBLSTM), and NAW-DBLSTM weighted without the time window (NT-NAW-DBLSTM), respectively. Traffic flow forecasting is the key to an intelligent transportation system (ITS). Currently, the short-term traffic flow forecasting methods based on deep learning need to be further improved in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. Therefore, a short-term traffic flow forecasting model GA-TCN based on genetic algorithm (GA) optimized time convolutional neural network (TCN) is proposed in this paper. The prediction error was considered as the fitness value and the genetic algorithm was used to optimize the filters, kernel size, batch size, and dilations hyperparameters of the temporal convolutional neural network to determine the optimal fitness prediction model. Finally, the model was tested using the public dataset PEMS. The results showed that the average absolute error of the proposed GA-TCN decreased by 34.09%, 22.42%, and 26.33% compared with LSTM, GRU, and TCN in working days, while the average absolute error of the GA-TCN decreased by 24.42%, 2.33%, and 3.92% in weekend days, respectively. The results indicate that the model proposed in this paper has a better adaptability and higher prediction accuracy in short-term traffic flow forecasting compared with the existing models. Urban traffic control has become a big issue to help traffic management in recent years. With data explosion, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is developing rapidly. ITS is an advanced data-based method for traffic control, which requires timely and effective information supply. This research aims at providing real-time and accurate traffic flow data by intelligent prediction method. Applying multiple road traffic flow data of the Caltrans Performance Measurement System (PeMS) and separating the time series, the mechanism of spatial-temporal differences was taken into consideration. Based on the basic Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model, an improved LSTM model with Dropout and Bi-structure (Bi-LSTM) for traffic flow prediction was presented. In the prediction process, we applied three models including the improved Bi-LSTM model, Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) model and Linear Regression in the experiment, and made a comparison from aspects of model structure complexity, operating efficiency and prediction accuracy. To validate the portability of the prediction model, the features of traffic flow from different datasets were further analyzed. The experimental results show that the improved Bi-LSTM model performs best in traffic flow prediction with comprehensive rationality, which reaches an accuracy of about 92% when considering temporal differences. Particularly, the specific factors of traffic situations and locations which is more applicable to be predicted by the improved Bi-LSTM model are summarized considering spatial differences. This research proposes an advanced and accurate model to provide real-time and short-term traffic flow prediction data, which is of great help to intelligent traffic control. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology is a key component of an autonomous vehicle’s sensing system. It also has the potential to be used at the roadside as a major infrastructure-based detection for connected and autonomous traffic infrastructure systems, as well as for the general purpose of traffic data collection and performance evaluation. Lane and movement-based traffic volume data collection is a basic function of roadside traffic sensing systems. The accuracy of volume detection is mainly impacted by occlusion for most of the advanced traffic sensing technologies, such as LiDAR, video, and radar. This paper presents research results to quantify the influence of occlusion on LiDAR systems’ traffic volume detection in different traffic demand scenarios. A method for automatic identification and classification of LiDAR specific occlusion was first developed based on the inherent characteristics of LiDAR sensors, which can report occlusion ratios of roadside LiDAR data. Then, the study was extended to accommodate all traffic demand scenarios, traffic levels of service (LOS A to E), and different truck compositions (5% to 30%) by integrating the developed method and traffic simulation. Lastly, a comprehensive case study first verified the accuracy of the simulation results using field data collected from two testbeds, and then at the third testbed, a lane and movement-based traffic volume study was demonstrated. The practical significance of this paper is to help traffic engineers making informed decisions when considering LiDAR as their choice of sensing technology in the field from two aspects: (1) the quantitative relationship between expected occlusion rate and resulted detection accuracy under various traffic conditions; (2) lessons learned from the pilot field implementation on LiDAR, installation strategy, data storage, and communication. This paper is intended to improve the performance of signalized intersections, one of the most important systems of traffic control explained within the scope of smart transportation systems. These structures, which have the main role in ensuring the order and flow of traffic, are alternative systems depending on the different methods and techniques used. Determining the operation principles of these systems requires an extremely careful and planned study, considering their important role. Performance outputs obtained from the queue analyses made in previous studies formed the input of this study. The most important techniques are used in the effective control of intersections, such as signal timing: in particular, the use of effective green time and order of the transitions between phases. In this research, a traffic-sensitive signalized intersection control system was designed with the suggested methods against these two problems. The sample intersections were selected from three cities with the highest population density as the case study area. In the analysis of the performance of the connection arms of the selected intersections, flow intensity data were taken into consideration, as well as the arrival and service rates. Based on this, the outputs of the two proposed models regarding the use of phase transitions and effective green durations were compared with two other adaptive control systems and their positive results were shared. The recent years have witnessed a considerable rise in the number of vehicles, which has placed transportation infrastructure and traffic control under tremendous pressure. Yielding timely and accurate traffic flow information is essential in the development of traffic control strategies. Despite the continual advances and the wealth of literature available in intelligent transportation system (ITS), there is a lack of practical traffic counting system, which is readily deployable on edge devices. In this study, we introduce a low-cost and effective edge-based system integrating object detection models to perform vehicle detecting, tracking, and counting. First, a vehicle detection dataset (VDD) representing traffic conditions in Vietnam was created. Several deep learning models for VDD were then examined on two different edge device types. Using this detection, we presented a lightweight counting method seamlessly combining with a traditional tracking method to increase counting accuracy. Finally, the traffic flow information is obtained based on counted vehicle categories and their directions. The experiment results clearly indicate that the proposed system achieves the top inference speed at around 26.8 frames per second (FPS) with 92.1% accuracy on the VDD. This proves that our proposal is capable of producing high-accuracy traffic flow information and can be applicable to ITS in order to reduce labor-intensive tasks in traffic management. Summary: The rise in traffic congestion has become a significant concern in the urban city environment. The conventional traffic control systems with inefficient human resources management fail to control the traffic discipline, leading to increased traffic density and road offenses. However, the intelligent transportation system (ITS) can provide safety, efficiency, and sustainability for large‐scale vehicular traffic dilemmas. ITS unites machine learning with the available traffic control force and performs real‐time police scheduling to ensure the smooth flow of traffic. Many researchers have demonstrated notable work in intelligent traffic police scheduling and deployment using various optimization algorithms. However, the compilation of such praiseworthy work as a whole is still missing. Motivated by these facts, we provide a comprehensive review of the machine learning‐based state‐of‐the‐art technologies that can be used to form a three‐tier solution taxonomy. The first tier describes various tools and technologies that can be utilized to collect traffic data. The second tier highlights the machine learning algorithms and their accuracy, which forms a pattern in the collected data and then yields some crucial information about traffic flow, congestion levels, and so forth. In the third tier, the most vital taxonomy layer, various traffic police scheduling strategies are discussed. The proposed survey also presents the use of cases of traffic police scheduling that elaborates this review's applicability in various domains. In this study, the effect of direct and recursive multi-step forecasting strategies on the short-term traffic flow forecast performance of the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model is investigated. To increase the reliability of the results, analyses are carried out with various traffic flow data sets. In addition, databases are clustered using the k-means++ algorithm to reduce the number of experiments. Analyses are performed for different time periods. Thus, the contribution of strategies to LSTM was examined in detail. The results of the recursive based strategy performances are not satisfactory. However, different versions of the direct strategy performed better at different time periods. This research makes an important contribution to clarifying the compatibility of LSTM and forecasting strategies. Thus, more efficient traffic flow prediction models will be developed and systems such as Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) will work more efficiently. The trend of increasing traffic demand is causing congestion on existing urban roads, including urban motorways, resulting in a decrease in Level of Service (LoS) and safety, and an increase in fuel consumption. Lack of space and non-compliance with cities' sustainable urban plans prevent the expansion of new transport infrastructure in some urban areas. To alleviate the aforementioned problems, appropriate solutions come from the domain of Intelligent Transportation Systems by implementing traffic control services. Those services include Variable Speed Limit (VSL) and Ramp Metering (RM) for urban motorways. VSL reduces the speed of incoming vehicles to a bottleneck area, and RM limits the inflow through on-ramps. In addition, with the increasing development of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and Connected AVs (CAVs), new opportunities for traffic control are emerging. VSL and RM can reduce traffic congestion on urban motorways, especially so in the case of mixed traffic flows where AVs and CAVs can fully comply with the control system output. Currently, there is no existing overview of control algorithms and applications for VSL and RM in mixed traffic flows. Therefore, we present a comprehensive survey of VSL and RM control algorithms including the most recent reinforcement learning-based approaches. Best practices for mixed traffic flow control are summarized and new viewpoints and future research directions are presented, including an overview of the currently open research questions. Traffic congestion occurs when traffic demand is greater than the available network capacity. It is characterized by lower vehicle speeds, increased travel times, arrival unreliability, and longer vehicular queueing. Congestion can also impose a negative impact on the society by decreasing the quality of life with increased pollution, especially in urban areas. To mitigate the congestion problem, traffic engineers and scientists need quality, comprehensive, and accurate data to estimate the state of traffic flow. Various types of data collection technologies have different advantages and disadvantages as well as data characteristics, such as accuracy, sampling frequency, and geospatial coverage. Multisource data fusion increases the accuracy and provides a comprehensive estimation of the performance of traffic flow on a road network. This paper presents a literature overview related to the estimation of congestion and prediction based on the data collected from multiple sources. An overview of data fusion methods and congestion indicators used in the literature for traffic state and congestion estimation is given. Short-term traffic flow prediction is an important basis of intelligent transportation systems. Its accuracy directly affects the performance of traffic control and induction. To improve prediction accuracy, in this paper, a traffic flow prediction model is proposed by combining hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC), standardized Euclidean distance (SED), and a long short-term memory network (LSTM). The proposed model is called the CHS-LSTM model. In this model, HAC is used to carry out cluster analysis on the original traffic flow data sample set of target detection sections. Based on the results of cluster analysis, traffic flow data are divided into several categories. For different categories of traffic flow, SED is used to calculate the spatial correlation of the road network where the target sections are located, and the K sections most relevant to the target detection sections are used in the construction of an input data matrix for LSTM. The prediction result with the minimum root-mean-square error is regarded as the final prediction result. The electronic toll collection data of Taiwan are used as the fundamental data in this paper to verify the performance and effectiveness of the CHS-LSTM model. The experimental results indicate that the CHS-LSTM model can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of LSTM. Wireless communication is being used as an enabling technology with traditional fixed traffic control systems in this transitional era toward Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Unfortunately, major security concerns have arisen with respect to ever-increasing complexity and interconnectivity, and a noticeable lack of attention for security in these systems. Addressing concerns is a colossal challenge as it requires thorough development and formal analysis of a system model with respect to security. To tackle this challenge, we present a novel formal attack modeling and impact analysis methodology based on the Link Queue Model (LQM) of traffic flow inside a double ring road network, which is equivalent to a grid network with homogeneous links. We develop attack models as functions of tampered traffic control settings (e.g., green time ratios, cycle length, retaining ratios) with outputs equivalent to mobility impacts on the traffic network (e.g., time until system reaches state convergence, asymptotic average network flow). Further, for a given attack model, we define and identify vulnerable states: states that are critical to protect because they lead to negative impacts under the given attack model. Using our methodology we found that for certain vulnerable states, after only a few cycles of tampered control settings an attacker could cause a real impact of 1.5x speed-up in gridlock state convergence or 37%-99% drop in the asymptotic average flow rate.
