A region's population growth inevitably results in higher water consumption. This persistent rise in water use increases the region's wastewater production. Consequently, due to this increase in wastewater (influent), Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are required to run effectively in order to handle the huge demand for treated/processed water (effluent). Knowing in advance the influent and effluent parameters increases the operational efficiency and enables cost-effective utilization of diverse resources at wastewater treatment plants. This paper is based on a prediction/forecasting of an influent quality parameter, namely total MLD, as well as effluent quality parameters, namely MPN, BOD, DO, COD and pH for the real-time data collected pre-, during and post-COVID-19 at the Bharwara WWTP in Lucknow, India. It is the largest UASB-based wastewater treatment facility in Uttar Pradesh and the second largest in Asia. In this paper, we propose a novel model namely, wPred comprising extensions of SARIMA with seasonal order and ANN-based ML models to estimate the influent and effluent quality parameters, respectively, and compare it with the existing machine learning models. The lowest sMAPE error for the influent parameters using wPred is 2.59%. The findings of the paper show a strong correlation (R-value), up to 0.99, between the effluent parameters actually measured and predicted. As a result, the model designed in this paper has an acceptable level of accuracy and generalizability which efficiently predicts/forecasts the performance of Bharwara WWTP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper outlines the efforts at establishing observatories in India for modern astronomical observations made by aristocrats over the last century or so prior to Indian independence in 1947. The focus of this paper is therefore on three institutions only, the Royal Observatory at Lucknow, Trevandrum Observatory, and Nizamiah Observatory in Hyderabad. This demonstrates that the concept of 'patronage' was alive and well in nineteenth century India, just as it was in Britain, Europe and North America. These observatories primarily were established either to encourage educated Indians to gain a realistic knowledge of Western astronomy, or so that India itself could contribute to that body of research knowledge. One of these institutions, Nizamiah Observatory was India's sole observatory involved in the ambitious international Astrographic Catalogue and Carte du Ciel and Project. It is telling that quite early in its history this Observatory ended up with a university, while this fate later befell Trevandrum Observatory. It is notable that none of the observatories discussed in this paper has survived in its original form through to the present day as a forefront astronomical research facility. Moreover, relatively early in its history Trevandrum Observatory abandoned astronomy and shifted its focus to geomagnetism. Unlike the observatories discussed in the first paper in this series, none of the observatories reviewed in this paper was set up primarily to further Britain's colonial ambitions. All were local Indian initiatives, yet each received support, in one way or another, from British astronomers or observatories--so the colonial link was still there, but only as an underlying element. In recent decades, medium-sized Indian cities have experienced accelerated urban growth due to the saturation of large cities. Such rapid urban growth combined with inadequate urban planning has triggered urban sprawl in medium-sized Indian cities. In this context, the present study focuses on the geospatial measurement of urban sprawl in four rapidly expanding Indian medium-sized cities located in diverse physiographic regions, such as Lucknow urban agglomeration (UA), Bhubaneswar UA, Raipur UA, and Dehradun UA. Multi-temporal Landsat imageries from 1991 to 2021 were downloaded for land cover classification through the maximum likelihood classification tool in ArcGIS 10.3. Thereafter, spatiotemporal land cover change detection was performed based on the classified land cover maps. The presence of urban sprawl was detected using the relative entropy index while the urban expansion index quantified the urban sprawl typologies such as edge expansion, leapfrog development, and ribbon development. The results exhibited a rapid rise in built-up land cover from 1991 to 2021. The prevalence of urban sprawl was detected in all four cities as per the relative entropy index. Edge expansion typology of urban sprawl was dominant compared to leapfrog development and ribbon development. Such urban growth phenomenon creates a hindrance in promoting sustainable urban development in medium-sized Indian cities. The results obtained from this paper would assist urban planners and policymakers in developing strategies to encourage planned urban growth. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought an unprecedented adverse impact on women's health. Evidence from the literature suggests that violence against women has increased multifold. Gender-based violence in urban slums has worsened due to a lack of water and sanitation services, overcrowding, deteriorating conditions and a lack of institutional frameworks to address gender inequities. Methods: The SAMBHAV (Synchronized Action for Marginalized to Improve Behaviors and Vulnerabilities) initiative was launched between June 2020 to December 2020 by collaborating with the Uttar Pradesh state government, UNICEF and UNDP. The program intended to reach 6000 families in 30 UPS (Urban Poor settlements) of 13 city wards. These 30 UPS were divided into 5 clusters. The survey was conducted in 760 households, 397 taken from randomly selected 15 interventions and 363 households from 15 control UPS. This paper utilized data from a baseline assessment of gender and decision-making from a household survey conducted in the selected UPS during July 03-15, 2020. A sample size of 360 completed interviews was calculated for intervention and control areas to measure changes attributable to the SAMBHAV intervention in the behaviours and service utilization (pre- and post-intervention). Results: The data analysis showed a significant difference (p-value < 0.001) between respondents regarding women's freedom to move alone in the control and intervention area. It also reflected a significant difference between control and intervention areas as the respondents in the intervention area chose to work for the cause of gender-based violence. Conclusion: The SAMBHAV initiative brought an intersectional lens to gender issues. The community volunteers were trained to approach issues based on gender-based violence with the local public, and various conferences and meetings were organized to sensitize the community. The initiative 's overall impact was that it built momentum around the issue of applying the conc ept of intersectionality for gender issues and building resilience in the community. Both emotional quotient and intelligence quotient are immensely important trait required in a manger. The present study aims at studying emotional intelligence among managers of hospitality industry and to assess relationship between job related factors and their emotional intelligence level. Job related factor used in this study are work experience level and educational qualification of participants. Experience level ranges from 0 to 10 years and educational qualification of managers were categorized into three categories i.e., graduate, post graduate and professional degree. A total of 100 managers were selected using stratified random sampling technique from various organization of hospitality industry in Lucknow city of Uttar Pradesh. Emotional intelligence level of participants was recorded using Schutte Self Report Emotional Intelligence Test. Data analysis was done using SPSS software version 28. Analysis of result helps in concluding that high level of emotional intelligence was found among majority of managers in hospitality industry and there is no significant relationship between jobrelated factors (like experience level and educational qualification) of manager's emotional intelligence level. In public health, the representation and analysis of the incidence of the disease play an important role in assessing the regional disparity and health infrastructure. The geographic information system is one of the best methods to do so. This paper aims to visualise the spread of COVID-19 and perform cluster analysis. The prospective Poisson space-time scan statistic was utilised to detect clusters of COVID-19 at the district level in the Uttar Pradesh state of India. The spatial mapping was performed to assess the situation of COVID-19 and related factors. The log-likelihood ratio and relative risk were calculated monthly from May to December 2020. As per the results, the size and location of clusters kept changing with being more concentrated in Lucknow, Kanpur, Gautam Buddha Nagar districts and NCR regions. The significance of these clusters was less than 0.001. The detection of these clusters helped understand the overall dynamics of the disease spread. The number of confirmed cases declined in most districts, with only a few being at higher risk and needing more attention and resources. It was concluded based on the analysis that the areas of higher economic activities and population density with higher access to hospitals and testing had a larger number of cases and were the regions of hotspots. Globally, 54.5% of the total population was living in urban settings in 2016 and a projection indicates that if the same trend goes, then this population will be 60% in 2030. Natural land has been converted to impervious space rapidly which is altering the climate change. The main focus of the present paper is the study of Land Surface Temperature (LST) dynamics and its relationship with Land Indices, viz., Normal Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) which is found negative, Normal Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) which is found positive, Enhanced Built-up and Bareness Index (EBBI) which is found positive in Lucknow city on both time points of 1993 and 2019. This study also includes the effects of land indices on LST profiling in nine different parts and eight different directions to explore the spatial dynamics of city landscape. The NDVI is found higher in the southern side than any other parts of the city in 2019 because of high vegetation growth which resulted in reduction of LST by 4.42 °C to 5.76 °C as compared to parts of the city. The results of NDBI and EBBI exhibit high built-up growth in the landscape of the Lucknow city especially from city center to 13 kms (least growth in south-eastern side) from 1993 to 2019. The results indicate intensification of LST in the range of 0.26 °C to 2.24 °C between city centre and city periphery from 1993 to 2019. The findings of the present study will help urban planners and policy makers to adopt suitable measures for sustainable planning for Lucknow city landscape to reduce the adverse effects of LST. Sanitation is a multidimensional concept alluding primarily to provision of services for safe disposal of human excreta, provision of clean potable water as well as maintenance of hygiene through judicious means of wastewater and solid waste disposal. This paper aims at studying the accessibility to toilet facilities by 350 slum residents belonging to 308 households, majority of whom are women. These were drawn from 14 selected notified slum colonies of Lucknow city during a field survey conducted in 2017. It was found that 68.42% respondent used shared toilet facilities, followed by private facilities at 10.57%. 19.21% depended on community toilets while 1.8% assented to open defecation. The BMI of women slum residents was found to be positively correlated with usage of private toilets (0.38; p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with open defecation (− 0.24; p < 0.01) both being considered as variables of sanitation conditions. Amongst the socio economic variables, the BMI of women slum residents was found to be positively correlated with median household income (0.64; p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with labour as a means of occupation (− 0.27; p < 0.01). In addition, a composite index was devised in order to assess the level of sanitation and socio economic development in the surveyed city slums. Total electron data (TEC) from GPS nowadays can be used as a tool for understanding the space weather phenomena. The development of prediction model for TEC is quiet crucial and challenging due to the dynamic behavior of the ionosphere, since it depends on different factors such as seasonal, diurnal and spatial variations, solar geomagnetic conditions etc. In this paper, an attempt is made for predicting the GPS derived TEC values for different GNSS stations over India using a hybrid method based on Ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep learning method. The daily TEC time series data from the IISc Bangalore (Latitude 13.021, Longitude 77.570), Lucknow (Latitude 26.912, Longitude 80.956) and Hyderabad (Latitude 17.417, Longitude 78.551) stations over India during the period 2008 to 2015 of solar cycle 23 and 24 is used for analysis. The assessment of model performance for testing predicted output compared with LSTM and EMD-LSTM models, and their comparison results show that the hybrid EEMD-LSTM model presents better than the other models. Reliable site selection for the installation of solar power stations in urban areas is critical for the reason that one of the criteria parameters, aerosol pollution, which is a significant threat to the performance of photovoltaic (PV) systems, is happened to be varied place to place within and surrounding areas of the urban region. Therefore, the present work is an attempt to ascertain the potential reduction of solar power generation between a commercial and a background site in the urban region of Lucknow, India. Power generation of 125-kW/h capacities of solar PV modules is installed in two campuses (i.e., commercial region and background region) of a national research institute CSIR-IITR, Lucknow. Simultaneous on-site hourly particle pollution measurements for PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were captured using optical principle-based PALAS Frog Dust Analyzer for both locations from morning 7 AM to evening 5 PM during February 15–21, 2021 (i.e., Monday–Sunday). Mean concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 were recorded for the commercial area as 47 µg/m3, 76 µg/m3, and 164 µg/m3, and in the background area as 20 µg/m3, 39 µg/m3, and 69 µg/m3, respectively. Despite the unchanged solar irradiance over the city, the power outputs of the solar power station located at the background area are found consistently higher than the power station at the commercial area as recorded atmospheric PM# levels at the commercial site are higher. Further, identified the deposition of dust particles on PV panels is gradually increased from clean-day to dusty-day, and this is relatively enhanced with higher level at commercial area than city background due to the load of coarse size particles in the ambient air and their instantaneous deposition on solar panels. Therefore, the loss of solar power output was found maximum of 17.2% and 6.17% in the commercial area and the background area, respectively. The main purpose of this study was to discover the perceptions and expectations of users towards public libraries. Public libraries are meant for the public and run by the public money and provide services to all the members of the society without any discrimination. To achieve the objectives of the study a survey has been conducted in selected public libraries in Lucknow. For the collection of the data well designed questionnaire was used and data were collected to 135 respondents selected from the 09 public library. The major results were as follows: the study finds that most of the respondents were male and the common reason of respondents for visiting a library for study and competition purpose. The study findings are as follows; the services are good, staffs are cooperative and computer and internet facilities are very poor. The users of public libraries have more expectations like, lack of internet and wifi facility, library websites, photocopy facility, computer facility etc. Some people are not aware about the public library so advertised of public library and more financial support will be required. The present study is inclined towards identifying the cause and awareness of the scholarly community in institutes of higher education toward the issue of academic dishonesty. A questionnaire was distributed to research scholars pertaining to the faculty of science and social science of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow. The results show that the students are aware of the issue of plagiarism and academic dishonesty. However, due to lack of encouragement to be fair and thorough system they do not consider it to be a big challenge. The author recommends mission mode action for awareness of students and faculty towards the issue of fair use and plagiarism. It has also been emphasised for all Indian universities to design a proper mechanism and honour code for all academic outputs to be channelized through review and anti-plagiarism system. Rivers play important role to human life. According to the old history, human civilizations were developed on the bank of rivers. But due to modern civilization and further growth in human population, the quality and quantity of river has been reduced. Water pollution is a world-wide problem and became a global problem. It is leading global deaths of living beings and spreading of harmful deadly diseases throughout the world. Due to water pollution it is accounted for the deaths of more than about 14,000 people daily. For about 700 million people don't have access to a paper toilet and good hygiene in their daily life. The drainage systems are the major source of the water pollution especially from the rivers which is flowing through the city. These drainage systems generally carry industrial wastes and domestic wastes as well as sewage and medicinal wastes making the river water horrendously polluted to the core. The greater part of the significant towns are situated close to the stream banks gathering each waste sources in it. The river Gomti flows through Lucknow, India and is the main source of water for every purpose for the city. Gomti stream is begun from Madhoganj Tanda town in Pilibhit district, UP. It streams throughthe locale of Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Sitapur, Kheri, Barabanki, Lucknow, Sultanpur, Jaunpur and at last gets together with Ganga. Gomti river receives huge amount of industrial effluents to domestic discharge as well as sewage and agricultural run-off which again brings lot of pesticides, fertilizer. Then streetnwashouts brings oil, asphalts, sediments and many types of heavy metals. These activities made the river a flowing dumping yard. The present study shows the water quality of river Gomti at Lucknow. Three sample sites were selected infront of the Riverfront of Lucknow. Parameters like pH.nDissolvednoxygen, nTotalnhardness, nTotalnalkalinity, nChloride were determined. The creation of cities has been one of the most phenomenal achievements of human endeavor. Adults are the major stakeholders for such achievements but the children are helpless and representationless. The current research paper aims at understanding the issues faced by the children in the rapidly urbanized world where the lack of child-friendly environments/open spaces for their outdoor activities is cause for concern. The research paper looked at various national and international norms, standards, and practices of parks and open spaces to identify various child-friendly environmental parameters. The research adopted the Delphi method as a tool for the validation of child-friendly environment parameters. It also used children's drawings and essays to understand children's perceptions about the child-friendly environment. It is observed that present government norms and policies do not adhere to those parameters. The research found that Lucknow city does not meet the defined quantitative norms and standards as laid out by the national norms and standards for open spaces and parks. The quality dimensions for planning a child-friendly environment are weakly addressed by cities and neighborhoods. The city neighborhoods lack the physical, cognitive, perceptional, emotional, and social dimensions of a child-friendly environment. There is a need to adopt suitable norms and standards with measurable parameters as part of various dimensions and implement these in creating a child-friendly environment in planned neighborhoods. Context: Over the past three decades, there has been a significant rise in the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) globally, accompanied by a relative decline in communicable diseases. Aims: With this background, the research was planned to determine the prevalence of acanthosis nigricans (AN) or skin tags (STs) in the study population and to examine the relationship between the presence of AN and ST with commonly used indicators such as waist-to-height ratio (W/Ht.), Indian Diabetes Risk Score (IDRS), and body mass index for predicting the risk of NCDs. Settings and Design: This cross-sectional study was done at a health facility in Lucknow (India). Methodology: Consecutive sampling was employed to select 152 apparently healthy adults as the participants. Data collection involved administering a questionnaire and conducting anthropometry using standardized methods. Visual inspection was conducted to identify AN or ST on the common sites. Statistical Analysis Used: Data entry was done in Microsoft Office Excel, followed by data analysis using SPSS. To test the association between variables "significance of difference of mean," Chi-square test, logistic regression analysis, and estimation of Kohen's kappa were used. A "P" value was considered statistically significant at <0.05 level. The sensitivity and specificity of AN and ST were also estimated in predicting the risk of NCDs. Results: The prevalence of AN was 19.08% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 12.76%–25.40%), while the prevalence of STs was 28.29% (95% CI = 21.05%–35.53%). AN showed a sensitivity of 22.4% and specificity of 96.3% with W/Ht. ratio as the standard, and a sensitivity of 26.44% and specificity of 90.77% with IDRS as the standard. ST exhibited a sensitivity of 32.0% and specificity of 88.89% with W/Ht. ratio as the standard, and a sensitivity of 37.93% and specificity of 84.62% with IDRS as the standard. Introduction: The study was aimed at identifying the incidence of unreported probable hypoglycaemia in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) on anti-diabetic medications, using the screening Stanford Hypoglycemia Questionnaire (SHQ) in real-world situations. Methods: It was a multicentre cross-sectional study on consecutive individuals attending 10 diabetes care centres in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. The inclusion criteria were as follows: known individuals with T2DM, literate, age greater than or equal to 18 years, on at least one anti-diabetic agent for more than a month and not engaged in regular self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG). Results: This study was conducted from August 2017 to April 2018, involving 1198 participants. The mean age of the individuals enrolled was 53.45 years (±10.83), with males comprising 55.3% of the population. It was found that 63.6% of patients were on sulphonylurea (SU), 14.5% were on pioglitazone, 92.2% on metformin, 62.3% on Dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP4i) and 12.8% on Sodium-glucose cotransporter (SGLT2i). The mean SHQ score was 1.81 (±1.59). Probable hypoglycaemia was mild in 57.59%, moderate in 14.69% and severe in 1.41%. Those with diabetic neuropathy (P = <0.001), retinopathy (P = <0.001) and nephropathy (P = <0.001) had significantly higher SHQ scores. Insulin or SU use was associated with a significantly higher SHQ score. Concomitant statin use was associated with a lower incidence of mild, moderate and severe hypoglycaemia (P = 0.01). On multivariate analysis, we found that age, sex, systolic blood pressure (SBP), insulin use and fasting blood sugar were the most important factors associated with an increased risk of hypoglycaemia with an R2 cut-off of 0.7. Conclusion: SHQ was discovered to be a simple and cost-effective screening tool for outpatient detection of hypoglycaemia in an Indian setting, and it can add value to management. This paper presents the storm time comparative analysis of the performances of latest versions of global ionospheric models: International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) 2016, NeQuick 2 (NeQ) and the IRI extended to Plasmasphere (IRI-P) 2017 with respect to Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) derived ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC). The analysis is carried out under varying geomagnetic storm conditions during September 2017-November 2018, falling in the declining phase of solar cycle 24. TEC data from Indore, located near the northern crest of the Equatorial Ionization Anomaly (EIA) along with data obtained from the International GNSS Service (IGS) stations at Lucknow, located beyond the anomaly crest; Hyderabad, located between anomaly crest and magnetic equator and Bangalore, located near the magnetic equator have been analysed. The models generally overestimated during the storm periods with the exception of IRI-P, which matched (with an offset of about 3–5 TECU) with the enhancement observed on September 7, 2017 (during the strong storm of September 2017), from stations around the anomaly crest. No significant match was observed by the other two models. This match of IRI-P is attributed to the plasmaspheric contribution as well as the capability of assimilating measured TEC values into this model. In the present study, to the best of our knowledge, first comparisons of the empirical model derived TEC with NavIC and GNSS measurements from an anomaly crest location, combined with the IGS observations from the magnetic equator to locations beyond the anomaly crest, are conducted during geomagnetically disturbed conditions. Since NavIC satellites are at higher altitudes (~ 36000 km), the inclusion of NavIC data to the existing model could give better ionospheric predictions over the Indian subcontinent. Background: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is rarely associated with the occurrence of acute or chronic pancreatitis, requiring complex perioperative management. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and disease characteristics of pancreatitis in PHPT. Materials and Methods: This study is a clinicopathological analysis of the medical records of patients who were diagnosed with PHPT with pancreatitis between 1989 and 2021 in the Endocrine Surgery department, SGPGI, Lucknow. Results: Out of 548 PHPT cases, 44 (8.03%) were found to be associated with pancreatitis. The mean age was 33.57 years (15-65 years); 5 were =20 years, while 26 were =30 years of age. There were 27 males and 17 females. Twenty-one cases were of acute (11 acute, nine recurrent acute, one acute on chronic), whereas 23 were of chronic pancreatitis (six chronic calcific pancreatitis). The major clinical presentation of PHPT with pancreatitis was abdominal pain (65.91%). The mean number of attacks per patient in recurrent acute pancreatitis was two. Mean PTH levels were 68.19 pmol/L. The mean tumor size (in the largest dimension) was 2.79 ± 1.4 cm while the mean tumor weight was 4.91 g. Nephrolithiasis was associated with 25 cases. An association with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome was seen in one case. The final histopathological diagnosis was parathyroid carcinoma in two, hyperplasia in three, and parathyroid adenoma in 39 cases. Normocalcemia was seen in 27.2%, hypercalcemic crisis in 15.9%, and 25% of patients required semi-emergency parathyroidectomy. The outcome was favorable in all, as none had any further attacks of pancreatitis. Conclusion: In our study, the prevalence of pancreatitis in PHPT cases was 8.03%. The majority of patients were young. Normocalcemia was seen in 12 patients, so even if calcium levels are normal, PHPT should be suspected in young patients with pancreatitis. Continuous groundwater quality monitoring is crucial for ensuring safe drinking and irrigation by mitigating risks from geochemical contaminants through appropriate treatment methods. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to assess the suitability of groundwater collected from Lucknow, India, for both drinking and irrigation. Forty samples were collected from different sites within the study area to evaluate groundwater quality. Various parameters such as pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), chlorides ( C l − ), total alkalinity, total hardness, sulphate ( S O 4 2 − ), nitrate ( N O 3 − ), fluorides ( F − ), iron (Fe), arsenic (As), magnesium ( M g 2 + ), and calcium ( C a 2 + ) were analyzed. The weighted arithmetic water quality index (WAWQI), a vital rating system representing overall water quality, was employed to classify the water into different categories, such as very good, good, moderate, poor, and unfit for drinking. This classification is invaluable for public awareness and decision-making to make informed decisions regarding effective management, treatment, and sustainable societal development on a broader scale. A correlation matrix was generated and analyzed to observe correlations between the various parameters. Additionally, spatial distribution maps for the analyzed parameters and WQI were prepared using the inverse distance weighted (IDW) method. The study found that WQI values in the area ranged from 2.64 to 168.68, indicating good water quality in most places except for the Kukrail region, where the water quality is unfit for drinking purposes. The water quality map shows that 86% of the area falls under the very good category, 14.63% under good to moderate quality, and 0.37% is categorized as unfit for drinking. The present study investigates bioaccumulation factor (Bfc), Edaphic pollution indices and associated health risk assessment of trace metals (TMs) i.e., Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and Co in the crops, agricultural soil (AgS), and irrigation water (IgW) collected from various peri-urban area of metropolitan city of India, Lucknow. Though the level of these TMs was within the permissible limits (PL) (FAO/WHO, 2011) in AgS and IgW however it was higher than PL in tomato, spinach and wheat cultivated in the fields. The bioaccumulation factor of Cu, Fe and Mn in edible parts of tomato, spinach and wheat was 8 to 25 times higher through the AgS and 10 to 300 times higher through the IgW in the tomato, spinach and wheat samples. The enrichment factor (Efc), contamination factor (Cfc), contamination degree (Cdg) and modified contamination degree (mCdg) values of Co, Cu, Mn, Fe and Zn ranged from low to high levels of contamination, whereas the geo-accumulation index reflected low contamination in agricultural soil. on the other hand, the metal pollution load index (Mpi) was found strongly contaminated in most of the study areas. Due to the consumption of these contaminated vegetables and cereal (VCs) by human consumers, the hazard quotient (HQ), total hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were found to be more than the requisite value of 1, which indicates a far-long health risk in this crowded city and its surrounding regions. Aim: The main purpose was to evaluate the effect of complete denture rehabilitation on the jaw growth pattern in individuals with ectodermal dysplasia from an early age to maturity. Settings and Design: This was a prospective in vivo study performed in the Department of Prosthodontics, King George Medical University, Lucknow, India. Materials and Methods: Rehabilitation with three sets of conventional complete dentures was completed in an ectodermal dysplasia case at the age of 5, 10, and 17 years. Cephalometric and diagnostic cast analyses were the methods performed to evaluate jaw growth patterns. Linear and angular measurements obtained after denture rehabilitation were averaged and compared with mean standard values of nearly corresponding ages, as given by Sakamoto and Bolton. Conversely, alveolar ridge arch width and length were evaluated for their dimensional changes during the same age intervals. Statistical Analysis Used: Mann--Whitney U-test was used to check the difference between the groups. The significance of the level adopted was 5%. Results: Nasion-anterior nasal spine, anterior nasal spine-menton, anterior nasal spine-pterygomaxillary fissure, gonion-sella, and gonion-menton lengths were found to be not statistically significant than the mean standard values of nearly corresponding ages (P > 0.05). The decrease in facial plane angle, increase in Y-axis angle, and mandibular plane angle after complete denture rehabilitation were statistically significant when compared to their mean standard values (P < 0.05). Cast analysis showed more increase in the length compared to the width in both arches. Conclusion: Complete denture rehabilitation did not significantly affect the jaw growth pattern, although it improved facial esthetics and masticatory activity by establishing adequate vertical dimensions. Lucknow is the capital of India's largest state, Uttar Pradesh, one of South Asia's most polluted urban cities. Tropospheric photochemistry relies on non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOCs), which are ozone and secondary organic aerosol precursors. Using the proton-transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS) at an urban background site in Lucknow, the chemical characterisation of NMVOCs was performed in real time from December 2020 to May 2021. About ∼ 173 NMVOCs from m/z 31.018 to 197.216 were measured during the study period, including aromatics, non-aromatics, oxygenates, and nitrogen-containing compounds. The campaign daily mean concentrations of the NMVOCs were 125.5 ± 37.5 ppbv. The NMVOC daily average concentrations were about ∼ 30 % higher during the winter months (December–February) than in summer (March–May). The oxygenated volatile organic compounds and aromatics were the dominant VOC families, accounting for ∼ 57 %–80 % of the total NMVOC concentrations. Acetaldehyde, acetone, and acetic acid were the major NMVOC species, 5–15 times higher than the other species. An advanced multi-linear engine (ME-2) model was used to perform the NMVOC source apportionment using positive matrix factorisation (PMF). It resolves the five main sources contributing to these organic compounds in the atmosphere. They include traffic (23.5 %), two solid fuel combustion factors, SFC 1 (28.1 %) and SFC 2 (13.2 %), secondary volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) (18.6 %), and volatile chemical products (VCPs) (16.6 %). Aged and fresh emissions from solid fuel combustion (SFCs 1 and 2) were the dominant contributors to the total NMVOCs, and compounds related to these factors had a high secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential. Interestingly, the traffic factor was the second-highest contributor to the total NMVOCs, and compounds related to this factor had a high ozone formation potential. Significant differences in the composition of the two solid fuel combustions indicate the influence of local emissions and transport of regional pollution to the city. The high temperature during summer leads to more volatilisation of oxygenated VOCs, related to the VCP factor. The study is the first attempt to highlight the sources of NMVOCs and their contribution to secondary pollutant (SOA and O 3) formation in the city of Lucknow during winter and summer. Human beings, as 'one of the most valuable components of the biosphere,' face a constant state of crisis as a result of sullied air, water, and soil degradation. While both water and land pollution are exceedingly harmful, air pollution is unique in its global dispersion of toxins. Air pollution's effect on health is quite complex, as it is caused by a variety of distinct causes, each of which has a unique effect. Not only the ambient air quality in cities is creating worry, but also the indoor air quality in rural and urban locations. The study is limited to the health consequences of declining air quality in Lucknow. This study is based on the data collected from 7 slum communities located in the Charbagh area of Lucknow city during the month of February 2018. This study was conducted with following aims and objectives: to understand the multiple dimensions of the issue in discussion i.e. child abuse through an anthropological perspective and suggesting possible solutions to curb the identifiable problem pertaining to the study area. In the population of males and females (including children) we interviewed a total of 125 households which included a total of 300 children and the following conclusions are made on that data alone. When we say "abuse" it does not mean only sexual but also physical, mental and cases of neglectance. After conducting our study we have identified poverty as the major cause along with its four direct consequence, they are: poor milieu, improper family planning poor socio-economic conditions, which resulted in physical neglectance, medical neglectance and educational neglectance, and illiteracy among parents. The study aimed for optimum use of land resources and mitigating losses due to irrational land take decisions. A model was developed to identify the land patches that are suitable for land take to accommodate urban expansion by using fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) and geographic information system (GIS). FAHP-based matrix was developed, showing the degree of integrated importance of criteria. The matrix was used to develop the Sustainable Development Index (SDI). The SDI showed the categorisation of the good and bad land take decisions for the present scenario. The rational flexibility in decision making was incorporated to develop the Decision Making Rubric (DMR). The DMR followed rational re-classification process for probable mitigation of previous land take losses through appropriate curative measures and accordingly strategise for future land take decisions incorporating preventive measures. Development suitability map for the case city was prepared using developed SDI and DMR, which showed the present land take scenario and mitigated land take scenario, respectively. The study adds a new dimension of trade-off between natural and built environment by incorporating rational flexibility in land take decision making to handle the future land demands. The case city of Lucknow represents category of Tier 2 Indian cities having fast rate of urbanisation. In the exercise it was inferred that due to irrational land take decisions 40.78% of productive agriculture land was lost. Dashehari is the leading mango variety grown in Indo-Gangetic plain. Its yield is affected severely by the micronutrient deficiencies. Zinc and boron are the two important micronutrients which limit the yield and quality of Dashehari mango in this region. Hence a field study was taken up to understand the responses of Dashehari mango to different levels of Zn. Results indicated yield enhancement with proper Zn supplementation through foliar sprays. Highest yield of 43.50±2.00 to 50.72±2.40 kg tree-1 was recorded with 1.0% ZnSO4 application, followed by 42.27±1.26 (1.5% ZnSO4) to 47.85±1.65 (0.75% ZnSO4) kg tree-1. TSS (19.63±0.25 to 20.27±0.40°Brix), acidity (0.150±0.01 to 0.200±0.02%) and ascorbic acid (29.46±2.29 to 35.17±1.32 mg per 100 g) variations were noted under the influence of various Zn treated fruits. Foliar spray application also caused nutrient richness in mango fruit pulp showing improvement in Zn concentration in fruit pulp from 1.17±0.10 to 1.73±0.10 mg kg-1. Highest concentration of B, Cu, Fe and Mn were observed (3.13±0.018, 4.37±0.06, 7.87±0.06, 20.10±0.15 mg kg-1 respectively) with P and K concentrations of 0.026±0.0002& 0.28±0.001% respectively. Significant difference in leaf and soil Zn content was also recorded. The results indicated that yield and quality of Dashehari mango can be improved with foliar spray of Zn in sandy loam soil. Introduction:Cervical carcinoma is the second most common malignancy in women worldwide. It is estimated that over a million women worldwide currently have cervical cancer. Worldwide, cervical cancer is both the fourth-most common cancer and the fourth-most common cause of death from cancer in women. In 2012, 528, 000 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed, and 266, 000 women died of the disease (GLOBOCAN 2012), nearly 90% of them in lowto middle-income class countries. Multifactorial causation, potential for prevention, and the sheer threat it poses make cervical cancer an important disease for in-depth studies, as has been attempted by this paper by studying the hypoxic marker. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the identification of biomarkers able to predict both response to treatment and survival. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of hypoxic marker Carbonic anhydrase (CAIX) markers to predict the clinical outcome of patients with cervical carcinoma. Materials and methods:This study was conducted on biopsy proven previously untreated cases of cancer cervix who presented to the Department of Radiotherapy at King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. The study was a single institution, non-randomised, prospective study to evaluate carbonic anhydrase IX as a biomarker in cancer cervix patients undergoing radiotherapy. Sample size: Total 75 samples • 25 healthy control subjects (Age and sex matched) • 25 cancer cervix patients (duplicate samples i.e. baseline and follow up). Approximately 2 ml of blood was withdrawn before initiation of treatment and at the time of first follow up. Standard treatment was given as external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) with concurrent chemotherapy followed by intracavitary radiotherapy (ICRT). Surface water bodies are vital source of water for human consumption, domestic needs, agriculture, industrial activities, and also for aquatic life and ecosystems. In this study, a stretch of river Gomti was studied at 5 sites in Lucknow for two consecutive seasons during 2019. The physicochemical-bacteriological parameters of water and sediment samples were analyzed, followed by multivariate statistics. Mean values of pH, turbidity, EC, TS, TDS, TSS, DO, BOD, COD, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, total alkalinity, total hardness, chloride, and fluoride during the pre-monsoon period were 7.4 ± 0.2, 5.2 ± 3.3 (NTU), 444.4 ± 97.4 (µS/cm), 274.6 ± 61.6, 254.3 ± 50.2, 21.9 ± 11, 5.4 ± 1.6, 10.2 ± 5.9, 31.2 ± 13.3, 1.2 ± 0.5, 1.7 ± 1.1, 25.9 ± 3.7, 204 ± 41.8, 146.2 ± 11.5, 15.5 ± 8.7, and 0.5 ± 0.1 mg/l, respectively. The corresponding values during the post-monsoon season were 7.5 ± 0.2, 5.5 ± 3.2 (NTU), 436 ± 75.1 (µS/cm), 273.7 ± 124.2, 209.7 ± 82.5, 63.9 ± 43.4, 5.6 ± 1.6, 15.8 ± 8.9, 39.2 ± 23.5, 5.4 ± 4.6, 1.4 ± 0.9, 25.5 ± 5, 199.2 ± 36.6, 134 ± 8.6, 20.2 ± 8.9, and 1.7 ± 0.2 mg/l, respectively. Concentration of pollutants significantly increased by 5–15% from sampling station S1 (upstream) to S5 (downstream). Enumerations of fecal coliform and Escherichia coli bacteria were low at S1 but significantly higher at the S5 site. WQI ranged from 88 to 345 during pre-monsoon and 159 to 422 during post-monsoon period, indicating poor water quality which was unsuitable for drinking purposes. Strong positive correlations (≥ 0.9) were observed among pH, chloride, phosphate, sulfate, turbidity, conductivity, TS, TDS, BOD, and COD for water samples during both seasons. The data reveals that pollution load increases gradually from upstream to downstream due to the increasing discharge of raw sewage. An experiment was carried out in the department of Horticulture, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India to evaluate the morphological variation of ber fruits collected from widely and naturally grown ber crops inside the main campus of the university. There were 85 morphotypes selected for the study and fruit morphological characters were studied at the departmental laboratory with CRD statistical design and data of various morphotypes were compared at 5% level of significance. The results revealed that the highest fruit weight (15.33 g), fruit length (43.92 mm), fruit width (30.09 mm), fruit volume (14.23ml), pulp weight (14.26g), Pulp thickness (11.12 mm), pulp per cent (92.84%) was observed in B-45 morphotype. These physical characters seemed to be good for customer attractiveness. Considering the morphocharacteristic performance of fruit of 85 ber morphotypes grown in side BBAU campus, it may be concluded that the ber morphotype B-45 could be used for further crop improvement programme for its bigger fruit size, high pulp content. Weather variability over the long run exhibits the trends of change in climate and forewarns for development and deployment of adaptation measures. Gangetic plain of Uttar Pradesh in India is an agriculturally important geographical region of South East Asia. The region is vulnerable to weather variability led glacier melting, climate change impacts and increased competition for land. In addition, changes in rainfall, groundwater and weather patterns are deteriorating the agricultural and water systems that are bound to affect the food production and throw the poor populace into chaotic conditions. As weather variability trends are being increasingly used for sustaining the food production in climate-sensitive regions, the present study was taken up in Lucknow district of Uttar Pradesh. Daily meteorological datasets of temperature, rainfall, rainy days, evaporation, wind speed, relative humidity and bright sunshine hours during the past 63 years (1956–2018) were analysed for long-term trends. The study indicated conspicuous long-term trends of reduction in annual rainfall (− 28.97 mm decade−1), rising level of daily Tmin (0.09 °C a decade) and RH (1.08% decade−1) coupled with significant declining trends in evaporation (− 0.31 mm day−1), wind speed (− 0.29 km h−1) and bright sunshine hours (− 0.19 h day−1), that poignantly elucidates a clear warming trend over the period in the region. Multi-pronged adaptation strategies comprising of development of water efficient crop varieties, cropping system diversification with less water requiring crops, adoption of water efficient irrigation techniques, surface water harvesting and copious ground water recharge have been proposed for coping up. Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), occupies a significant place in fruit industry, since it is cultivated both in plains as well as in hills. The fruit stands out for its organoleptic and nutraceutical properties and is appreciated around the world for its economic returns. Despite their high sensitivity to marginal and salt affected soil, it has a potential, as fruit crops perform well in salt-affected soils when grown with the aid of innovative interventions. The current study is one such attempt where a CSR bio-inoculant comprising of salt tolerant and growth promoting rhizobacterial bio-consortia on a unique media developed at ICAR-Central Soil Salinity Research Insitute, Regional Station, Lucknow was assessed for its field efficacy with enrichment of different organic amendments. The field experiment was conducted during 2018-19 at the Horticulture Research Farm of the Dept. of Horticulture at Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, India, on Strawberry cv. Chandler grown on partially reclaimed alkali soil of central Uttar Pradesh. The study was laid out in RBD with twelve treatment combinations and control replicated thrice. The results show that runners treated with CSR bio-inoculant and applied with FYM, municipal solid waste compost (MSWC), and paddy straw mulching have a significant influence on fruit yield and physicochemical properties. The maximum fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit size, fruit weight, fruit dry weight, fruit volume, fruit yield/plant (131.06g), and fruit yield/ha (194.16q) were all statistically significant over the control in the treatment with 75% NPK+ MSWC + Mulch (Paddy straw) + CSR bio-inoculant. The experimental findings revealed that treatment with CSR bi-inoculant and 75% NPK+MSWC+paddy straw mulch could increase the yield of strawberry cv. The conflict between the vitality of natural ecosystem versus artificially developed systems has existed since decades. The ecological sensitivity and socio-economic aspects associated with riverfront development along rivers have attracted the attention of environmentalists and ecologists across the globe. The present study evaluates the impacts of channelization and riverfront development on the water quality of river Gomti through Water Pollution Index (WPI) and other statistical tools. Of the total studied sites, 75% were found to be in the 'highly polluted' category even after the development of riverfront. An approximate increase of 274.5% and 171.76% was witnessed in the WPI values at the midstream sites of Kudiaghat and Daliganj, respectively. This increase in the WPI values clearly stated the deteriorated water quality of river Gomti after the channelization. The major issue of domestic sewage discharge with partial or no treatment into the river seems to be unresolved even after a considerable period of riverfront development. Groundwater is a significant resource that supports almost one-fifth population globally, but has been is diminishing at an alarming rate in recent years. To delve into this objective more thoroughly, we calculated interannual (2002–2020) GWS (per grid) distribution using GRACE & GRACE-FO (CSR-M, JPL-M and SH) Level 3 RL06 datasets in seven Indian river basins and found comparatively higher negative trends (−20.10 ± 1.81 to −8.60 ± 1.52 mm/yr) in Basin 1–4 than in Basin 5–7 (−7.11 ± 0.64 to −0.76 ± 0.47 mm/yr). After comparing the Groundwater Storage (GWS) results with the CHIRPS (Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Stations) derived SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) drought index, we found that GWS exhausts analogously in the same period (2005–2020) when SPI values show improvement (∼ 1.89–2), indicating towards wet condition. Subsequently, the GWSA time series is decomposed using the STL (Seasonal Trend Decomposition) (LOESS Regression) approach to monitor long-term groundwater fluctuation. The long term GWS rate (mm/yr) derived from three GRACE & GRACE-FO solutions vary from −20.3 ± 5.52 to −13.19 ± 3.28 and the GWS mass rate (km3 /yr) lie in range of −15.17 ± 4.18 to −1.67 ± 0.49 for basins 1–3. Simultaneously, in basin 4–7 the GWS rate observed is −8.56 ± 8.03 to −0.58 ± 7.04 mm/yr, and the GWS mass rate differs by −1.71 ± 0.64 to −0.26 ± 3.19 km3 /yr. The deseasonalized GWS estimation (2002–2020) states that Himalayan River basins 1,2,3 exhibithigh GWS mass loss (−260 to −35.12 km³ ), with Basin 2 being the highest (−260 km³ ). Whereas the Peninsular River basin 4,6,7 gives moderate mass loss value from −26.72 to −23.58 km³ . And in River basin 5, the GWS mass loss observed is the lowest, with a value of −8 km³ . Accordingly, GPS (Global Positioning System) and SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) data are considered to examine the land deformation as an effect due to GWS mass loss. The GPS data acquired from two IGS stations, IISC Bengaluru and LCK³ Lucknow, negatively correlates with GWS change, and the values are ∼ −0.90 to ∼−0.21 and ∼−0.7 to −0.4, respectively. Consequently, correlation between GWS mass rate (km3 /yr) and the SAR (Sentinel-1A, SBAS) data procured from Chandigarh, Delhi, Mehsana, Lucknow, Kolkata and Bengaluru shows ∼ 72 – 48% positively correlated area (PCA). The vertical velocity ranges within ∼ −94 to −25 mm/yr estimated from PCA. There is an increase in population (estimated 2008–2014) in Basin 1 & 2. Likewise, the correlation coefficient (ρ) between GWS change and the irrigational area is positive in all seven basins indicating significant depletion in GWS due to an uncalled hike in population or irrigational land use. Similarly, the positive linear regression (R 2 ) in Basins 1–3 also indicates high depletion in GWS. But basins 4–7 observe negative linear regression even after increasing population, which implies a control on the irrigational land use, unable to determine the GWS change at local scale and heterogeneous aquifer distribution. Uttar Pradesh is an active center for algal research in India, but regional checklists are not available. Checklists of algae reported from class Chlorophyceae (sensu Fritsch, 1935) are presented here, with taxonomic status updated per AlgaeBase. The checklist covers algae from 17 types of habitats and includes 749 species, 166 varities and six forma, belonging to four phyla, 11 classes, 26 orders, 64 families and 161 genera. Charophyta is the dominant phylum with 519 infrageneric taxa (species, varities, forma), while Chlorophyta is represented by 389 taxa. Zygnematophyceae is the dominant class with 465 infrageneric taxa under two orders, six families and 29 genera. Chlorophyceae has 305 infrageneric taxa under five orders, 33 families, and 76 genera. Cosmarium is the most speciose genus with 163 taxa, followed by Oedogonium (79), Spirogyra (72), and Closterium (54). Our study revealed that of 75 districts in Uttar Pradesh only 40 are explored for algae, with Prayagraj and Lucknow recording 266 and 144 taxa respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Porcelain Fused to Metal (PFM) restorations offer aesthetics of ceramics and the strength of metal hence are the gold standards of fixed partial dentures. However, the fracture of porcelain-metal interface still remains a matter of concern. Aim: To study the porcelain-noble metal alloy interface of PFM restorations at different firing temperatures, using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Diffraction X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Materials and Methods: This in-vitro study was conducted between November 2018 to October 2019 at Prosthodontics Departments of Saraswati Dental College and Hospital and King George's Medical University Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. A total of 75 strips of noble metal alloy were prepared and layered with 1mm of porcelain on one surface, conforming to American National Standard/American Dental Association Specifications (ANSI/ADA) specification no.38 for Metal-Ceramic Dental Restorative Systems: 2015. These were randomly divided equally into 3 groups. Specimens of each group (n=25) were fired at different temperatures that is 850oC, 900oC and 960oC, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy and Energy diffraction X-ray spectroscopy were performed at the noble metal alloy and ceramic interface of all specimens. Data was recorded and statistically analysed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey HSD test. Results: Irregularities/Coarseness (50 µm) was seen on the noble metal alloy surface adjacent to ceramic layer in SEM images at all the three chosen temperatures. EDS study revealed intermingled zones of partial oxygen depletion at the interface region with formation of intermetallic compound, lead zirconate titanate and complete oxygen depletion zone near metal alloy end of interface. The mean value of Shear Bond Strength (SBS) was 16.31 MPa at 850oC, 24.33 MPa at 900oC and 19.41 MPa at 960oC (p-value <0.05). Conclusion: Difference in properties and location of the intermetallic compound formed at the interface, as well as the location of the oxygen depletion zone could account for the weaker bond formed between noble alloy-porcelain interface compared to base metal-porcelain interface. Food borne diseases are increasing globally and disease-causing fungi are becoming resistant to antifungal agents. Errors in food processing technology, irresponsible health and hygiene measures are responsible for widespread of antifungal diseases. The health hazards of such antifungal resistant pathogens are life threatening and also puts economic burden on the patient. This study determined antifungal resistance of fungi isolated from roadside food vendors from Lucknow and Pune, India. A total of 374 food samples were collected for this study. The food samples were analysed in laboratory using prepared quantitative media and identified by conventional lactophenol cotton blue staining. Confirmed fungal isolates were further subjected to antifungal susceptibility testing by the Agar disc diffusion technique. Results showed that 110 fungal isolates showed resistance to more than three antifungal agents. The multiple antifungal resistance exhibited by the fungi in this study is an indication of possible multidrug resistant fungal strains present in roadside food items. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is one of the most widespread viruses that infects a large number of cultivated crops worldwide and causes severe losses. Besides vegetables and ornamental crops, it is also spreading on medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) at an alarming rate. Natural occurrence of green mosaic, leaf curling, necrosis, and distortion were observed on the leaves of Salvia sclarea in the experimental field of CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow, India. Mechanical transmission assay, morphological features, CP gene, and RNA3-based genomic characterization revealed the association of a new CMV isolate with the present disease. Virus is mechanically sap transmissible to the test plants. Transmission electron microscopy showed the presence of isodiametric particles of ~ 28 nm in diameter. Phylogenetic studies revealed that RNA3 (~ 2.2 kb) belongs to the subgroup IA of CMV. Multiple sequence alignment of amino acid sequences showed that MP possesses two unique changes in the RNA-binding domain and CP was found to be the conserved one with one change only. Context: Menstruation is a normal physiologic phenomenon. Due to lack of awareness regarding menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls in India, majority have unhygienic practices which make them vulnerable to various adverse health and social outcomes. Aims and Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the awareness and perception of pre- and postmenarchal adolescent girls regarding menstrual hygiene. Settings and Design: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Paediatrics of a Government tertiary care center, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh for 6 months from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2019. Material and Methods: The study was undertaken among 120 adolescent girls between 09 and 19 years of age. Premenarchal age group was from 9 to 12 years and postmenarchal was 13–19 years. All the adolescent girls who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were subjected to a pretested prevalidated semi-structured questionnaire assessing their awareness and perceptions regarding menstrual hygiene. Result: Of 120 respondents, 43 girls were aware of menstruation prior to attainment of menarche. Mother was the first informant regarding menstruation in the case of 49 (49.65%) girls. A total of 57 girls believed it as a physiological process. 32 (53.3%) girls knew the use of sanitary pads during menstruation. Regarding restrictions practiced, 136 (85%) girls practiced different restrictions during menstruation. Conclusion: Adolescent girls, being vulnerable, need to have adequate and correct awareness regarding menstrual hygiene. This will protect them from risk of developing reproductive or sexually transmitted infections (RTI/STI) which is a burden on our society and render many females infertile and cause other adverse health outcomes. Introduction: India reports high prevalence of stroke, both in rural and urban areas. Secondary prevention is very important in patients with stroke to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with it. Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is an important risk factor for stroke which can lead to cerebrovascular insult. Aim: To study the prevalence of AF in patients with acute ischemic stroke and to obtain the association between the parameters such as age, gender, stroke territory and stroke severity by National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Materials and Methods: In this multicentric cohort study, 150 patients with acute ischaemic stroke (new onset or recurrent) were studied at tertiary care centres located in Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Prayagraj, Moradabad and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) from January 2020 to January 2021. Age, gender, stroke territory and stroke severity by NIHSS was recorded and compared between those with and without AF. Chi-square test was used to assess the association and obtaining significance. Results: Prevalence of AF in patients with stroke was 8% (n=12), which was significantly high in female population (8 out of 12; p=0.025), those with age more than 60 years (10 out of 12; p=0.011), with atrial dilatation (9 out of 12; p=0.124), patients with severe stroke as per NIHSS (7 out of 12; p=0.001) and those with poor outcome (8 out of 12; p=0.012). Conclusion: In the present study, 8% of the stroke patients had AF with stroke. Background: The poppy seeds commonly known as ‘khus-khus’ or ‘postadana’, obtained from opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum L.) is known one of the world’s oldest medicinal plant. Its alkaloids, seeds and oil used since time immemorial for therapeutic, food stuffs and economical purpose. An effective breeding program plays an important role for selection, genetic improvement and development of high yielding cultivars/variety in opium poppy. Therefore, a study was conceded out to evaluate the genetic variability, path analysis for different agronomic traits along with their major chemical constituents of opium alkaloids in 30 accessions/landraces of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) collected from different geographical places of India. Methods: The 30 genotypes of Opium poppy including different breeding lines and landraces collected from different places were grown in year (2017-18) in randomized complete-block designs (RCBD) with three replications at the research farm of CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP), Lucknow. Morpho-metric data were recorded on five competitive randomly selected plants in each line for following thirteen traits. Dried husk/straw capsules were chemically analyzed through HPLC. The pooled mean data were statistically analysed by using Windostat statistical software 4.0 versions available at Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, CSIR-CIMAP Lucknow. Result: Variation among the mean of thirty diverse genetic stocks was highly significant (p<0.01) for all thirteen traits. High heritability coupled with high Genetic advance as percent mean (GAM) and Genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) for the traits Thebaine and Nosacapine. The results of associations studies revealed that the trait capsule/plant was positively and significantly correlated with seed (g)yield/plant (gm) and nosacapine at both genotypic and phenotypic level. According to results, a significant genetic variability was also present among 30 accessions, simple selection can be employed to improve seed yield along with alkaloids yield. Background and objectives: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a causative agent of hepatitis C disease of the liver. We have analysed the major risk factors including demographic, clinical and genotypic distribution among HCV seropositive patients and their distribution in Uttar Pradesh, India. Methods: This study was conducted by a questionnaire-based proforma, filled in Hepatobiliary Clinic, Department of Medicine, King Georg's Medical University, Lucknow, from 2014 to 2017. Demographic, clinical and laboratory data were recorded. Seropositivity was demonstrated through an anti-HCV IgG ELISA kit. Positive patients were further examined for HCV RNA by RT-PCR. Results: A total of 31,440 patients attended the hepatobiliary clinic. Among these, 310 (0.99%) patients were confirmed for HCV infection and there was no significant difference between males and females (50.3% vs. 49.7%). Previous surgery (49.0%), dental extraction (41.0%) and roadside shaving (38.1%) were the major risk factors for HCV infection. We also observed that previous surgery 143/154 (92.9%) in female and roadside shaving 118/156 (75.6%) in male was the commonest factor for HCV, however; dental extraction was comparable among male and female (65 [51.8%] vs 62 [48.2%], P value = 0.818). HCV RNA genotype 3 (81.6%) was the most frequent followed by 3a (11.3%), 3b (5.8%), 1 (0.7%) and 4 (0.7%). In the district-wise analysis, frequent cases were included from Lucknow with previous surgery and dental extraction as the commonest risk factor. Interpretation and Conclusions: Previous surgery among female and roadside shaving among males are the commonest risk factors for HCV. The aim of the present work was to determine the effects of long-term changes in land use/land cover (LULC) on surface and groundwater resources of quaternary aquifers in the Lucknow area of the Ganga plain, based on the analysis of multi-temporal satellite and field survey data. Changes in LULC for the period of 2008 and 2016 were mapped using Landsat-7 and Landsat-8 satellite data by applying hybrid image classification techniques. Hydro-geomorphic feature mapping for 2008 and 2016 was also carried out to monitor changes in important surface and subsurface hydro-geomorphic features of the area such as paleochannels, cut-off meanders, oxbow lakes, meander scars, flood plains and younger alluvial plain, and observation found that a decreasing trend in most features. Groundwater level data of selected wells for 2008 and 2016 were used to analyze the trend in groundwater level depletion and its relation with land use change and hydro-geomorphic features. In general, the observations from the present study clearly indicate that large-scale changes in groundwater reservoirs has been taken place due to changes in LULC, hydro-geomorphic features and extensive groundwater exploration practices over the past decade. The results show 4.09% increase in built-up land, 5.49% increase in open area, 8.80% decrease in vegetation cover, 2.31% decrease in agricultural land and 0.35% decrease in surface water bodies. The results observed through monitoring of LULC change, along with water level dynamics of the area, provide scientific data base for the protection, governance and decision-making for water resources management. Gender inequality poses grave consequences for young women's health and wellbeing. The aim of this study was to understand how gender influences the lives of young women living in urban slums of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India using story circles as a research methodology. Narrative-based participatory methods like story circles (which involves sharing individual stories in a group circle on a given topic) can provide the nuance and detail needed to understand young people's experiences, build trust between participants and researchers, and offer spaces to speak about culturally sensitive subjects. Six story circle sessions were conducted with 50 young women (aged 15–24) in Lucknow. Sessions were audio-recorded, transcribed, and coded. Transcriptions were analysed to identify the following salient themes, all of which act as mechanisms of gender inequality: mobility restrictions, rampant sexual harassment in the community, limited educational and work opportunities, and the utmost prioritization of marriage for young women. A detailed investigation on the potentially drought-prone regions over India is presented in this study based on the balance between precipitation and potential evapotranspiration (PET) during the southwest Asian mid-monsoon season. We introduce a parameter named dry day frequency (DDF) which is found suitable to present the drought index (DI) in mid-monsoon season, hence strongly associated with the possibility of drought occurrences. The present study investigates the probable aspects which influence the DDF over these regions, revealing that the abundance of anthropogenic aerosols especially over urbanized locations has a prevailing role in the growth of DDF during the last few decades. The prominent increasing trend in DDF over Lucknow (26.84 ∘ N, 80.94 ∘ E), a densely populated urban location situated in the Indo-Gangetic Plain, strongly reflects the dominant association of anthropogenic aerosols with the increasing dry phase occurrences. Increase in DDF (∼90 %) during the last 60 years is observed over this urban area compared to a broader region in its surroundings. In addition, periodic impacts of large-scale phenomena like ENSO (El Niño–Southern Oscillation) or SSN (sunspot number) become weaker when the study location is downscaled towards an urbanized region. Finally, when long-term projections of DDF are drawn using the high urbanization scenario of RCP 8.5, a huge rise in dry days is seen during mid-July to mid-September (reaching up to 50 dry days by the year 2100 over Lucknow), which will be a crucial concern for policymakers in future.
