The incidence of thyroid tumors has been increasing yearly over the past decade, making it the fourth highest tumor in women. This places various biological burdens on those affected. Currently, thyroid tumors are primarily diagnosed using percutaneous fine needle aspiration and ultrasound. However, these methods are complex, expensive, and less accurate, and they may fail to detect some thyroid nodules. As an alternative, researchers are focusing on blood‐based biomarkers in addition to the traditional diagnostic methods, assisted predominantly by nanomaterials. Early identification of thyroid cancer is crucial as it is highly treatable. Various sensing systems have been developed using nanomaterial‐mediated approaches to enhance the detection system. Nanomaterials are effectively applied in biosensors for surface functionalization and are conjugated with biomolecules to improve the interaction with the target analyte. This article deals with the false data injection attack (FDIA) detection problem for multi‐area power systems. Considering the large‐scale characteristic of the multi‐area power systems, a novel decentralized detection scheme is proposed to detect FDIAs. First, an unknown input sliding mode observer (UI‐SMO) is designed to decouple the interconnected terms, meanwhile, a robust term in the UI‐SMO can attenuate the effect of the load variation, by which the obtained residual is only sensitive to local FDIAs. The strict reachability of the sliding surface in the estimate error space is ensured by the robust term with an auxiliary variable, and the stability of the sliding mode dynamics is achieved. Then, a detection logic is delicately designed based on a two‐phase residual threshold. Due to the strong attenuating ability to load variation, the proposed detection scheme shows better detectability than some existing works with only decoupling interconnections. Finally, the theoretical results are backed up by a three‐area power system simulation with comparison between proposed UI‐SMO‐based and traditional UIO‐based detection scheme. Aims/Introduction: To investigate the impact of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes patients with normal bodyweight (OB[−]) in the Chinese population, and to further assess the sex–age differences between them. Materials and Methods: A total of 8,839 type 2 diabetes patients from two of the National Metabolic Management Centers in China were included in this study. Participants were classified into four groups by visceral fat area (VFA; cm2) and body mass index (BMI; kg/m2): VFA < 100 and BMI < 23.9 (VA[−]OB[−]), VFA < 100 and BMI ≥ 23.9 (VA[−]OB[+]), VFA ≥ 100 and BMI < 23.9 (VA[+]OB[−]), VFA ≥ 100 and BMI ≥ 23.9 (VA[+]OB[+]). Atherosclerosis was defined by brachial‐ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV; cm/s), and we analyzed the association between VFA, BMI and the tertiles of baPWV values. Results: The VA(+)OB(−) prevalence was 3.7% among these participants. Patients with VA(+)OB(−) had the highest baPWV value (P < 0.001) and the highest proportion of the tertile 3 of baPWV (P < 0.001) among four groups, and were significantly associated with baPWV (standardized β = 0.026, P = 0.008). VFA was significantly related to tertile 2 to tertile 3 of baPWV in (OB[−]) type 2 diabetes patients, when compared with tertile 1 of baPWV, respectively. In sex–age stratified analysis, the association of VFA and the tertiles of baPWV showed sex differences. For the 55 years age stratification analysis, there was no age difference in the relationship between VFA and baPWV in (OB[−]) patients. Rich functionalities have been identified for domain walls (DWs, naturally occurring interfaces in ferroics), e.g., enhanced conductance and photovoltaic effect, which specify the interest in their internal structure. The dimension/width and type are of particular interest, which is the carrier of their functionality. Recent attention has been focused on head‐to‐head or tail‐to‐tail charged DWs with greatly enhanced conductivity compared to the inner domains, which are found to be an order of magnitude thicker (tens of unit cells) than normal neutral DWs. In this study, ultrathin non‐Ising charged DWs are found, where polarization switched their direction within 2–3 unit cells in self‐assembled BiFeO3 nanocrystals. An analytical model and finite element method simulation are used to interpret the origin of this phenomenon, i.e., electrostatic constraints linked to DW configurations in a ferroelectric. This study indicates that as an intrinsic property, the width of the ferroic DWs varies with different electrostatic constraints and must be taken into consideration during its applications. Background: DNA damage in airway epithelia under exogenous disruptors can trigger various pulmonary diseases. Integrin beta 4 (ITGB4) is a structural adhesion molecule, which is indicated to regulate the process of DNA damage in airway epithelia for its unique long cytoplasmic domain subunit. Methods: The expression level of ITGB4 and the degree of DNA damage were observed in the house dust mite (HDM)‐stressed model and ozone‐challenged model, respectively. Besides, ITGB4 conditional knockout mice and ITGB4‐deficient airway epithelial cells were constructed to observe the influence of ITGB4 deficiency on DNA damage. Furthermore, the influence of ITGB4 deficiency on HDAC1 expression in airway epithelia was determined under stress stimulation. Finally, corresponding intervention strategies were carried out to verify the involvement of the ITGB4‐mediated HDAC1 pathway in DNA damage of airway epithelial cells. Results: HDM stress and ozone challenge reduced the expression of ITGB4, which is accompanied by the increased expression of 8‐oxoG and γ‐H2AX both in vivo and in vitro. Moreover, ITGB4 deficiency in airway epithelia aggravates the degree of DNA damage under HDM stimulation and ozone stress, respectively. Furthermore, ITGB4 deficiency downregulated the expression of HDAC1 during DNA damage, and restoring HDAC1 can reverse the enhanced DNA damage in airway epithelial cells after exogenous stress. Conclusions: This study confirmed the involvement of ITGB4 in the regulation of DNA damage through mediating HDAC1 in airway epithelial cells under exogenous stress. These results supply some useful insights into the mechanism of DNA damage in airway epithelial cells, which would provide possible targets for early prediction and intervention of pulmonary diseases. Superhydrophobic surface with anisotropic wetting and no low‐surface‐energy modification is investigated in which laser ablation, ultrasonic cleaning with degreasing solution, and electrodeposition are used sequentially. The macrogrooves are prepared by laser, and the micro–nanoscale structures on macrogrooves are prepared by electrodeposition, which is important to study the effect of hierarchical structures on anisotropic wetting. Herein, the surface morphology and surface crystal structure are discussed with respect to the laser‐ablated surface and the subsequent degreasing solution super‐cleaning/electrodeposited surfaces. At the same time, stainless steel surfaces with grooves of different periodic intervals (30–150 μm) and depths (10–40 μm) are systematically fabricated by laser only. When the periodic interval is smaller (<=50 μm), the static anisotropy is not obvious (5°–7°). However, the smaller the groove periodic interval and the greater the depth (<=30 μm), the more obvious the sliding anisotropy. Finally, dense and uniform micro–nanostructures on laser‐ablated grooves are prepared by electrodeposition. The micro–nanohierarchical structures prepared by electrodeposition not only can make the droplets have superhydrophobic properties but also enhance the water drop's anisotropic sliding ability. Organic electrosynthesis has gained increasing research interest as it harvests electric current as redox regents, thereby providing a sustainable alternative to conventional approaches. Compared with direct electrosynthesis, indirect electrosynthesis employs mediator(s) to lower the overpotentials for substrate activation, and enhance the reaction efficiency and functional group compatibility by shifting the heterogenous electron transfer process to be homogenous. As one of the most versatile and cost‐efficient mediators, halogen mediators are always combined with an irreversible halogenation reaction. Thus, the electrochemical reaction between halogen mediators and substrates doesn't directly controlled by the two standard potentials difference. In this account, our recent developments in the area of halogen‐mediated indirect electrosynthesis are summarized. The anodically generated halogen species from halogenide salts have the abilities to undergo electron‐transfer (ET) or hydrogen‐atom‐ transfer (HAT) processes. The reaction features, scopes, limitations, and mechanistic rationalisations are discussed in this account. Ever‐increasing demand on electronic devices with ultrahigh‐density non‐volatile data storage has attracted great interest in novel ferroelectric memories based on conductive ferroelectric domain walls. Embedded in an insulating material, ferroelectric domain walls have the capability of being (re)created, displaced, erased, and altered in their spatial configurations and electronic characteristics. However, the domain wall conductivities are in most cases not yet sufficiently high to ensure the current density required to drive read‐out circuits operating at high speeds. In this work, a giant domain wall current (>10 µA) of a single charged domain wall is obtained through conductive atomic force microscopy with a bias field of 4 V. This is achieved in self‐assembled BiFeO3 nanocrystals grown by sol‐gel method on Nb‐doped SrTiO3 substrates. Local configurations of domains and domain wall types are studied using vector piezoresponse force microscopy and high‐resolution transmission electronic microscopy. The enhancement of the wall current is shown to be due to the formation of conducting pathways of charged defects accumulated along domain walls and traversing the nanocrystals. The diverse domain walls can be manipulated by electric field in a perpendicular architecture. The perpendicular array structure of BiFeO3 nanocrystals should have great potentials for developing perpendicular nanoelectronic prototypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gastrodin is a very important and well‐known bioactive glycoside compound in Chinese medicine. It is also known as a drug with neuroprotective function. Here, a practical diversified synthesis of a series of gastrodin analogs was reported, which involved four‐step procedures consisting of bromination, oxidation, etherification, and reduction. Various gastrodin analogs were obtained in good yields. The compound 4c in this study has a good neuroprotective function: it can significantly downregulate tumor necrosis factor‐α and inducible nitric oxide synthase protein levels. An efficient protocol for the synthesis of 3‐aminoquinoxalinones via the electrochemical dehydrogenative C‐3 amination of quinoxalin‐2(1H)‐ones was developed. With aliphatic amines and azoles as the nitrogen sources, a series of 3‐aminoquinoxalinones was obtained in up to 99% yield. This direct electrolytic method avoids the use of transition metals and external oxidants, and represents an appealing alternative for the synthesis of 3‐aminoquinoxalinones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The α‐C–H functionalization of carbonyl compounds represents a cornerstone of organic chemistry. Site‐selective α‐C−H bond functionalization of carbonyl compounds to afford more versatile functionalized groups has become a promising strategy for atom‐economical C−C and C−X bond formation. Organic electrosynthesis is revolutionizing the nature of organic synthesis, and this field has seen explosive growth in recent years. Objective: This study aims to construct an artificial intelligence (AI) model capable of effectively discriminating between abdominal Henoch‐Schönlein purpura (AHSP) and acute appendicitis (AA) in pediatric patients. Methods: A total of 6965 participants, comprising 2201 individuals with AHSP and 4764 patients with AA, were enrolled in the study. Additionally, 53 laboratory indicators were taken into consideration. Five distinct artificial intelligence (AI) models were developed employing machine learning algorithms, namely XGBoost, AdaBoost, Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB), MLPClassifier (MLP), and support vector machine (SVM). The performance of these prediction models was assessed through receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, calibration curve assessment, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: We identified 32 discriminative indicators (p <.05) between AHSP and AA. Five indicators, namely the lymphocyte ratio (LYMPH ratio), eosinophil ratio (EO ratio), eosinophil count (EO count), neutrophil ratio (NEUT ratio), and C‐reactive protein (CRP), exhibited strong performance in distinguishing AHSP from AA (AUC ≥ 0.80). Among the various prediction models, the XGBoost model displayed superior performance evidenced by the highest AUC (XGBoost = 0.895, other models < 0.89), accuracy (XGBoost = 0.824, other models < 0.81), and Kappa value (XGBoost = 0.621, other models < 0.60) in the validation set. After optimization, the XGBoost model demonstrated remarkable diagnostic performance for AHSP and AA (AUC > 0.95). Both the calibration curve and decision curve analysis suggested the promising clinical utility and net benefits of the XGBoost model. In the context that coal remains the main energy source of China now, the safety of coal mine production is still worth our attention. For the factors influencing the roof accident of coal mine roadway have great complexity and uncertainty, a new risk prediction method of coal mine roof accidents integrating T‐S fuzzy fault tree and Bayesian network (BN) is proposed. The constructed method determines the BN and the conditional probability tables according to the established T‐S fuzzy fault tree. The fault state and fuzzy fault rate of root nodes are described according to the fuzzy number. And the forward inference of Bayesian is used to calculate the probability of the accidents on the roadway roof based on the fault probability of the root nodes and actual fault probability during construction respectively, to realize the risk prediction of roof accidents. Finally, practical data are used to verify the new fusion risk evaluation method by taking two mines as cases. The results show that the influencing factors calculated by the new fusion risk prediction method are completely consistent with the actual situation, confirming the effectiveness and reliability of this method, which providing new ideas for the research about the risk prediction of coal mine roof accidents. A growing body of evidence from neuroimaging studies suggests that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with functional and structural alterations in the central nervous system and that it has a potential link to emotional symptoms, such as anxiety and depression. However, the neurochemical underpinnings of depression symptoms in IBD remain unclear. We hypothesized that changes in cortical gamma‐aminobutyric acid (GABA+) and glutamine (Glx) concentrations are related to cortical thickness and resting‐state functional connectivity in IBD as compared to healthy controls. To test this, we measured whole‐brain cortical thickness and functional connectivity within the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), as well as the concentrations of neurotransmitters in the same brain region. We used the edited magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) with the MEGA‐PRESS sequence at a 3 T scanner to quantitate the neurotransmitter levels in the mPFC. Subjects with IBD (N = 37) and healthy control subjects (N = 32) were enrolled in the study. Compared with healthy controls, there were significantly decreased GABA+ and Glx concentrations in the mPFC of patients with IBD. The cortical thickness of patients with IBD was thin in two clusters that included the right medial orbitofrontal cortex and the right posterior cingulate cortex. A seed‐based functional connectivity analysis indicated that there was higher connectivity of the mPFC with the left precuneus cortex (PC) and the posterior cingulate cortex, and conversely, lower connectivity in the left frontal pole was observed. The functional connectivity between the mPFC and the left PC was negatively correlated with the IBD questionnaire score (r = −0.388, p = 0.018). GABA+ concentrations had a negative correlation with the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score (r = −0.497, p = 0.002). Glx concentration was negatively correlated with the HAMD score (r = −0.496, p = 0.002) and positively correlated with the Short‐Form McGill Pain Questionnaire score (r = 0.330, p = 0.046, uncorrected). There was a significant positive correlation between the ratio of Glx to GABA+ and the HAMD score (r = 0.428, p = 0.008). Mediation analysis revealed that GABA+ significantly mediated the main effect of the relationship between the structural and functional alterations and the severity of depression in patients with IBD. Our study provides initial evidence of neurochemistry that can be used to identify potential mechanisms underlying the modulatory effects of GABA+ on the development of depression in patients with IBD. Efficient intermolecular dehydrogenative cross-coupling of N-alkyloxyamides with xanthenes is reported. The protocol is carried out in an undivided cell under constant current conditions employing simple, cheap and readily available ferrocene (Fc) as a redox catalyst. Abstract: Broadband photodiode based on Si/perovskite structure that combines the advantages of both silicon and perovskite is presented in this paper. This study addresses the issue of the absent of ultraviolet absorption of silicon and the near‐infrared absorption of perovskite. More significantly, the polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) modification process on the perovskite film shows efficiency on morphology and crystallizing control that are important for high uniformity of responsivity and reproducibility. The result shows high spectral uniformity of responsivity (uSR = 0.85) on a wide spectrum ranging from 405 to 808 nm and the average of deviation of reproducibility is only 2.1%. Fast response time (645 µs), good on–off switching performance, and high photosensitivity (Ion/Ioff = 1322) of the as‐fabricated device are also achieved in this work. This research indicates that the high‐performance broadband photodiode can be realized by the novel organic–inorganic structure and PVP modification without compromising any of its performance. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of a series of novel cationic nitrogen-doped nanographenes (CNDNs) with nonplanar geometry and axial chirality. Single-crystal X-ray analysis reveals helical and cove-edged structures. Compared to their all-carbon analogues, the frontier orbitals of the CNDNs are energetically lower lying, with a reduced optical energy gap and greater electron-accepting behavior. Cyclic voltammetry shows all the derivatives to undergo quasireversible reductions. In situ spectroelectrochemical studies prove that, depending on the number of nitrogen dopants, either neutral radicals (one nitrogen dopant) or radical cations (two nitrogen dopants) are formed upon reduction. The concept of cationic nitrogen doping and introducing helicity into nanographenes paves the way for the design and synthesis of expanded nanographenes or even graphene nanoribbons with cationic nitrogen dopants. Wir berichten über Design und Synthese einer Serie von neuen kationischen stickstoffdotierten Nanographenen (CNDN) mit einer nichtplanaren Geometrie und axialer Chiralität. Einkristall‐Röntgendiffraktometrie beweist deren helikale und teils “Cove”‐terminierte Struktur. Verglichen mit den reinen Kohlenstoffanalogen liegen die Grenzorbitale der CNDN energetisch tiefer, was zu einer verringerten optischen Energielücke und einer erhöhten Elektronenaffinität führt. Alle Derivate zeigen in cyclovoltammetrischen Untersuchungen quasireversibles Reduktionsverhalten. Abhängig von der Zahl an Stickstoffdotanden ist es möglich, neutrale Radikale (bei einem Stickstoffdotanden) oder Radikalkationen (bei zwei Stickstoffdotanden) während des Reduktionsprozesses über In‐situ‐Spektroelektrochemie zu analysieren. Kationische Stickstoffdotierung kombiniert mit Helizität erschließt neue Wege für das Design und die Synthese von ausgedehnten Nanographenen und Nanographenstreifen. The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat ( CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system has recently emerged as a simple, yet powerful genome engineering tool, which has been widely used for genome modification in various organisms and cell types. However, screening biallelic genome-modified cells is often time-consuming and technically challenging. In this study, we incorporated two different surrogate reporter cassettes into paired donor plasmids, which were used as both the surrogate reporters and the knock-in donors. By applying our dual surrogate reporter-integrated donor system, we demonstrate high frequency of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated biallelic genome integration in both human HEK293T and porcine PK15 cells (34.09% and 18.18%, respectively). Developing highly active catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance for designing various renewable energy storage and conversion devices. Herein, we report the synthesis of a category of Co-Pi analogue, namely cobalt-based borate (Co-Bi) ultrathin nanosheets/graphene hybrid by a room-temperature synthesis approach. Benefiting from the high surface active sites exposure yield, enhanced electron transfer capacity, and strong synergetic coupled effect, this Co-Bi NS/G hybrid shows high catalytic activity with current density of 10 mA cm−2 at overpotential of 290 mV and Tafel slope of 53 mV dec−1 in alkaline medium. Moreover, Co-Bi NS/G electrocatalysts also exhibit promising performance under neutral conditions, with a low onset potential of 235 mV and high current density of 14.4 mA cm−2 at 1.8 V, which is the best OER performance among well-developed Co-based OER electrocatalysts to date. Inorganic nanowire arrays hold great promise for next-generation energy storage and conversion devices. Understanding the growth mechanism of nanowire arrays is of considerable interest for expanding the range of applications. Herein, we report the solution-liquid-solid (SLS) synthesis of hexagonal nickel selenide nanowires by using a nonmetal molecular crystal (selenium) as catalyst, which successfully brings SLS into the realm of conventional low-temperature solution synthesis. As a proof-of-concept application, the NiSe nanowire array was used as a catalyst for electrochemical water oxidation. This approach offers a new possibility to design arrays of inorganic nanowires. Herein, we report the solution-liquid-solid (SLS) synthesis of hexagonal nickel selenide nanowires by using a nonmetal molecular crystal (selenium) as catalyst, which successfully brings SLS into the realm of conventional low-temperature solution synthesis. As a proof-of-concept application, the NiSe nanowire array was used as a catalyst for electrochemical water oxidation. This approach offers a new possibility to design arrays of inorganic nanowires. Designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in the development of various renewable energy storage and conversion devices. In this work, we developed metallic Co4N porous nanowire arrays directly grown on flexible substrates as highly active OER electrocatalysts for the first time. Benefiting from the collaborative advantages of metallic character, 1D porous nanowire arrays, and unique 3D electrode configuration, surface oxidation activated Co4N porous nanowire arrays/carbon cloth achieved an extremely small overpotential of 257 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2, and a low Tafel slope of 44 mVdec-1 in an alkaline medium, which is the best OER performance among reported Co-based electrocatalysts to date. We study errors-in-variables problems when the response is binary and instrumental variables are available. We construct consistent estimators through taking advantage of the prediction relation between the unobservable variables and the instruments. The asymptotic properties of the new estimator are established and illustrated through simulation studies. We also demonstrate that the method can be readily generalized to generalized linear models and beyond. The usefulness of the method is illustrated through a real data example. SUMMARY This paper investigates the decode-and-forward two-way relaying channel without direct link and proposes a protocol based on the physical-layer network coding (PNC) protocol. The proposed protocol (termed ORT) introduces one retransmission into PNC, aiming at enhancing its outage performance. To manifest the merits of ORT, we compare it with PNC and the time-division broadcast (TDBC) protocol, in terms of outage performance, expected rate, and diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT). Firstly, we derive the outage probability of the three protocols and then the expected rate. Secondly, asymptotic analysis is conducted to shed light on the diversity and coding gains. Finally, the DMT is obtained for the three protocols. The numerical results reveal the following: (i) that ORT performs better than PNC in both outage and expected rate performance when the nodes transmit with different powers. However, it has the same DMT performance with PNC; (ii) that ORT possesses improved DMT performance over TDBC whereas its expected rate is only better than the latter at medium to high signal-to-noise ratio. An efficient methodology for synthesizing a small library of easily tunable and sterically bulky ligands for asymmetric hydroformylation (AHF) has been reported. Five groups of alkene substrates have been tested with excellent conversions, moderate-to-excellent regio- and enantioselectivities. Among the best result of the reported literature, application of ligand 1 c in the highly selective AHF of the challenging substrate 2,5-dihydrofuran yielded almost one isomer in up to 99 % conversion along with enantiomeric excesses ( ee) of up to 92 %. Highly enantioselective AHF of dihydropyrrole substrates is achieved using the same ligand, with up to 95 % ee and up to >1:50 β-isomer/α-isomer ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A highly enantioselective Michael addition of nitroacetates to β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters was developed by using chiral copper catalysts. The Michael addition products can be obtained in high yields with up to 99 % ee. SUMMARY This paper investigates two-way relaying with direct link transmission. We propose to combine incremental relaying (IR) with the time division broadcast protocol (TDBC) to form a new scheme, termed TDBC-IR, to increase the spectral efficiency of TDBC. Assuming half-duplex decode-and-forward relaying, the performance of three protocols, that is, TDBC, TDBC-IR, and physical-layer network coding (PNC), are studied and compared, in terms of outage probability, expected rate (ER), and diversity-multiplexing tradeoff. First, we reveal that the outage probability performance of TDBC-IR is the same as that of TDBC and better than that of PNC. Second, we compare the ER and diversity-multiplexing tradeoff performance of the three protocols based on the derived outage probability. The numerical results reveal that (1) the ER of TDBC-IR is greater than that of TDBC and PNC in the whole signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region, that is TDBC-IR has improved spectral efficiency performance; (2) the ER performance of TDBC is better than PNC in the low SNR region but worse in the high SNR region; (3) the maximum achievable diversity order of TDBC-IR and TDBC are both two whereas that of PNC is one; (4) the maximum achievable multiplexing gain of TDBC-IR is one, which is better than TDBC (its maximum achievable is 2/3) and achieves the maximum of PNC (its maximum achievable is one). A new metallic 2D material with high electrical conductivity (1×103 S m−1) consists of VSe2 ultrathin nanosheets with 4–8 Se‐V‐Se atomic layers. This is the first 2D transition‐metal dichalcogenide with intrinsic room‐temperature ferromagnetism. A highly anti-selective asymmetric Henry reaction has been developed, affording synthetically versatile β-nitroalcohols in a predominately anti-selective manner (mostly above 15:1) and excellent ee values (mostly above 95 %). Moreover, the anti-selective Henry reaction was carried out in the presence of water for the first time with up to 99 % ee. The catalytic mechanism was proposed based on the detection of the intermediates by extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (EESI-MS). As a universal second messenger, cytosolic calcium (Ca2+) functions in multifaceted intracellular processes, including growth, development and responses to biotic/abiotic stresses in plant. The plant‐specific Ca2+ sensors, calmodulin and calmodulin‐like (CML) proteins, function as members of the second‐messenger system to transfer Ca2+ signal into downstream responses. However, the functions of CMLs in the responses of cotton (Gossypium spp.) after Verticillium dahliae infection, which causes the serious vascular disease Verticillium wilt, remain elusive. Here, we discovered that the expression level of GbCML45 was promoted after V. dahliae infection in roots of cotton, suggesting its potential role in Verticillium wilt resistance. We found that knockdown of GbCML45 in cotton plants decreased resistance while overexpression of GbCML45 in Arabidopsis thaliana plants enhanced resistance to V. dahliae infection. Furthermore, there was physiological interaction between GbCML45 and its close homologue GbCML50 by using yeast two‐hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence assays, and both proteins enhanced cotton resistance to V. dahliae infection in a Ca2+‐dependent way in a knockdown study. Detailed investigations indicated that several defence‐related pathways, including salicylic acid, ethylene, reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide signalling pathways, as well as accumulations of lignin and callose, are responsible for GbCML45‐ and GbCML50‐modulated V. dahliae resistance in cotton. These results collectively indicated that GbCML45 and GbCML50 act as positive regulators to improve cotton Verticillium wilt resistance, providing potential targets for exploitation of improved Verticillium wilt‐tolerant cotton cultivars by genetic engineering and molecular breeding. Comprehensive Summary: A visible‐light‐enabled, photocatalyst‐free hydroacylation reaction of azodicarboxylic acid derivatives was described. This radical conjugate addition (RCA) protocol relied on the dual role of 4‐acyl‐1,4‐dihydropyridine (acyl‐DHP) reagents that besides being as radical reservoirs, they also enabled the conversion of radical adducts to anion intermediates via reduction. Under "catalyst‐oxidant‐additive free" conditions, a wide range of structurally different acyl hydrazide products were readily obtained in 56%—99% yields. SUMMARY: Ginger is cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions and is one of the most crucial spices worldwide owing to its special taste and scent. Here, we present a high‐quality genome assembly for 'Small Laiwu Ginger', a famous cultivated ginger in northern China. The ginger genome was phased into two haplotypes, haplotype A (1.55Gb), and haplotype B (1.44Gb). Analysis of Ty1/Copia and Ty3/Gypsy LTR retrotransposon families revealed that both have undergone multiple retrotransposon bursts about 0–1 million years ago. In addition to a recent whole‐genome duplication event, there has been a lineage‐specific expansion of genes involved in stilbenoid, diarylheptanoid, and gingerol biosynthesis, thereby enhancing 6‐gingerol biosynthesis. Furthermore, we focused on the biosynthesis of 6‐gingerol, the most important gingerol, and screened key transcription factors ZoMYB106 and ZobHLH148 that regulate 6‐gingerol synthesis by transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis in the ginger rhizome at four growth stages. The results of yeast one‐hybrid, electrophoretic mobility shift, and dual‐luciferase reporter gene assays showed that both ZoMYB106 and ZobHLH148 bind to the promoters of the key rate‐limiting enzyme genes ZoCCOMT1 and ZoCCOMT2 in the 6‐gingerol synthesis pathway and promote their transcriptional activities. The reference genome, transcriptome, and metabolome data pave the way for further research on the molecular mechanism underlying the biosynthesis of 6‐gingerol. Furthermore, it provides precious new resources for the study on the biology and molecular breeding of ginger. The atomically precise control over the size, shape and structure of nanographenes (NGs) or the introduction of heteroatom dopants into their sp2‐carbon lattice confer them valuable electronic, optical and magnetic properties. Herein, we report on the design and synthesis of a hexabenzocoronene derivative embedded with graphitic nitrogen in its honeycomb lattice, achieved via on‐surface assisted cyclodehydrogenation on the Au(111) surface. Combined scanning tunnelling microscopy/spectroscopy and non‐contact atomic force microscopy investigations unveil the chemical and electronic structures of the obtained dicationic NG. Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements reveal a considerable variation of the local contact potential difference toward lower values with respect to the gold surface, indicative of its positive net charge.
