Aim: To compare the effectiveness of adding a glucagon‐like peptide‐1 receptor agonist (GLP‐1 RA) with adding basal insulin among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) already treated with a sodium‐glucose co‐transporter‐2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) and not reaching their glycaemic control targets. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the Canadian LMC Diabetes Registry was conducted. Adults who initiated a GLP‐1 RA were matched 1:1 to adults who initiated basal insulin in a T2D and CKD population. Changes in metabolic outcomes were evaluated at 26‐52 weeks following the therapy start date. Results: Propensity score matching was used to match participants who initiated a GLP‐1 RA to participants who initiated basal insulin (n = 153/cohort). A significantly greater reduction in HbA1c at 26‐52 weeks of follow‐up was observed in the GLP‐1 RA cohort compared with the basal insulin cohort (−1.3% ± 1.4% vs. −1.1% ± 1.4%, P =.03). Weight was significantly reduced (−3.4 ± 3.7 vs. 2.6 ± 4.5 kg, P <.001), and the estimated glomerular filtration rate decline slowed significantly (−0.3 ± 8.2 vs. −2.4 ± 10.4 mL/min/1.73m2, P =.02), but the change in albuminuria was not significantly different (−5.7 ± 38.1 vs. −0.5 ± 38.3 mg/mmol, P =.47) at follow‐up in the GLP‐1 RA group compared with the basal insulin group. No differences in self‐reported hypoglycaemic events per week and therapy discontinuations were reported between the cohorts. Conclusions: The study shows the real‐world effectiveness of GLP‐1 RA therapy for T2D and CKD. GLP‐1 RAs provided superior reductions in HbA1c and weight, and greater kidney protection, compared with basal insulin among adults with T2D and CKD already treated with an SGLT2i. Objective Methods Results Interpretation Periventricular nodular heterotopia (PVNH) is the most common neuronal heterotopia, frequently resulting in pharmaco‐resistant epilepsy. Here, we characterize variables that predict good epilepsy outcomes following surgical intervention using stereo‐electroencephalography (SEEG) ‐informed magnetic resonance‐guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT).A retrospective review of consecutive cases from a single high‐volume epilepsy referral center identified patients who underwent SEEG evaluation for PVNH to characterize the intervention and outcomes.Thirty‐nine patients underwent SEEG‐guided MRgLITT of the seizure onset zone (SoZ) in PVNH and associated epileptic tissue. PVNH and polymicrogyria (PMG) were densely sampled with a mean of 16.5 (SD = 2)/209.4 (SD = 36.9) SEEG probes/recording contacts per patient. Ablation principally targeted just the PVNH and cortex that was abnormal on imaging was ablated (5 patients) only if implicated in the SoZ. Volumetric analyses revealed a high percentage of PVNH SoZ ablation (96.6%, SD = 5.3%) in unilateral and bilateral (92.9%, SD = 7.2%) cases. Mean follow‐up duration was 31.4 months (SD = 20.9). Seizure freedom (ILAE 1) was excellent: unilateral PVNH without other imaging abnormalities, 80%; PVNH with mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) or PMG, 63%; bilateral PVNH, 50%. SoZ ablation percentage significantly impacted surgical outcomes (p < 0.001).PVNH plays a central role in seizure genesis as revealed by dense recordings and selective targeting by LITT. MRgLITT represents a transformative technological advance in PVNH‐associated epilepsy with seizure control outcomes consistent with those seen in focal lesional epilepsies. In localized unilateral cases and otherwise normal imaging, PVNH ablation without invasive recordings may be considered, and this approach deserves to be explored further. We examined the longitudinal psychometric properties of the Perceived Stress Scale – 4 items version (PSS‐4) using item response theory with a sample of 361 mental health counsellors. Participants completed the PSS‐4 at three timepoints at six‐month intervals in a one‐year period. There were 290 participants who (80.3%) identified as female, 51 (14.1%) identified as male, eight (2.2%) identified as gender variant/non‐conforming, seven (1.9%) wrote in their own gender identity (e.g., genderqueer, gender expansive), three (0.8%) identified as Transgender male, and two (0.6%) did not respond to the item. The racial and ethnic backgrounds were as follows: White (87.3%), Multiracial (5.5%), Latino or Hispanic or Spanish (2.8%), Black or African American (1.4%), Asian (0.8%), Middle Eastern (0.8%), and five did not respond to the item (1.4%). We found unidimensionality evidence of the PSS‐4 across all three timepoints and response categories were monotonically ordered. We also found that across all timepoints, the average person location was lower than the average item location, suggesting that the PSS‐4 may not be well‐targeted for this sample of mental health counsellors. We observed no significant interactions between timepoints, hours worked per week, and length of employment. Pre‐implantation embryonic development occurs in the oviduct during the first few days of pregnancy. The presence of oviductal extracellular vesicles (oEVs, also called oviductosomes) is crucial for pre‐implantation embryonic development in vivo as oEVs often contain molecular transmitters such as proteins. Therefore, evaluating oEV cargo during early pregnancy could provide insights into factors required for proper early embryonic development that are missing in the current in vitro embryo culture setting. In this study, we isolated oEVs from the oviductal fluid at estrus and different stages of early embryonic development. The 2306–3066 proteins in oEVs identified at the different time points revealed 58–60 common EV markers identified in exosome databases. Oviductal extracellular vesicle proteins from pregnant samples significantly differed from those in non‐pregnant samples. In addition, superovulation changes the protein contents in oEVs compared to natural ovulation at estrus. Importantly, we have identified that embryo‐protectant proteins such as high‐mobility protein group B1 and serine (or cysteine) peptidase inhibitor were only enriched in the presence of embryos. We also visualized the physical interaction of EVs and the zona pellucida of 4‐ to 8‐cell stage embryos using transmission electron microscopy as well as in vivo live imaging of epithelial cell‐derived GFP‐tagged CD9 mouse model. A holistic review is given of the Southern Ocean dynamic system, in the context of the crucial role it plays in the global climate and the profound changes it is experiencing. The review focuses on connections between different components of the Southern Ocean dynamic system, drawing together contemporary perspectives from different research communities, with the objective of closing loops in our understanding of the complex network of feedbacks in the overall system. The review is targeted at researchers in Southern Ocean physical science with the ambition of broadening their knowledge beyond their specific field, and aims at facilitating better‐informed interdisciplinary collaborations. For the purposes of this review, the Southern Ocean dynamic system is divided into four main components: large‐scale circulation; cryosphere; turbulence; and gravity waves. Overviews are given of the key dynamical phenomena for each component, before describing the linkages between the components. The reviews are complemented by an overview of observed Southern Ocean trends and future climate projections. Priority research areas are identified to close remaining loops in our understanding of the Southern Ocean system. Plain Language Summary: The United Nations has identified 2021–2030 as the Decade of Ocean Science, with a goal to improve predictions of ocean and climate change. Improved understanding of the Southern Ocean is crucial to this effort, as it is the central hub of the global ocean. The Southern Ocean is the formation site for much of the dense water that fills the deep ocean, sequesters the majority of anthropogenic heat and carbon, and controls the flux of heat to Antarctica. The large‐scale circulation of the Southern Ocean is strongly influenced by interactions with sea ice and ice shelves, and is mediated by smaller scale processes, including eddies, waves, and mixing. The complex interplay between these dynamic processes remains poorly understood, limiting our ability to understand, model and predict changes to the Southern Ocean, global climate and sea level. This article provides a holistic review of Southern Ocean processes, connecting the smallest scales of ocean mixing to the global circulation and climate. It seeks to develop a common language and knowledge‐base across the Southern Ocean physical science community to facilitate knowledge‐sharing and collaboration, with the aim of closing loops on our understanding of one of the world's most dynamic regions. A worldwide increasing demand for renewable and non‐renewable energy resources has been ongoing since the mid‐1970s and is projected to increase for the next 2 decades. The effects of oil and natural gas development on wildlife mortality risk may play an important role in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population dynamics. We evaluated the potential effects of oil and natural gas development on mortality risk of mule deer in western North Dakota and eastern Montana, USA. We assessed adult and juvenile female mule deer mortality risk with Poisson point process models using 265 deer fitted with global positioning system (GPS) radio‐collars that were deployed from 2013–2016. Mortality covariates included proportion of area disturbed by oil and natural gas development, distance to oil and natural gas development, distance to roads, temperature, snow depth, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and age of deer. During the study there was no effect of oil and natural gas development or roads on mule deer mortality, though <1% of all deer locations were within 500 m of active drilling rigs. Mule deer mortality was greatest in winter and spring, and positively related to temperature during these seasons. Estimated annual adult survival probability was 0.79 (95% CI = 0.71–0.85). Given the strong influence of season and temperature variables on mortality risk, weather had the strongest influence on mule deer mortality during this study. Although we did not detect an effect of energy development on mule deer mortality, effects on space use resulting from development could influence deer dynamics in the region through displacement and could occur over longer time scales than we evaluated. Introduction: Men with African ancestry have the highest incidence and mortality rates of prostate cancer (PCa) worldwide. Methods: This study aimed to identify differentially methylated genes between tumor vs. adjacent normal and aggressive vs. indolent PCa in 121 African American patients. Epigenome‐wide DNA methylation patterns in tumor DNA were assessed using the human Illumina Methylation EPIC V1 array. Results: Around 5,139 differentially methylated CpG‐sites (q < 0.01, lΔβl > 0.2) were identified when comparing normal vs. tumor, with an overall trend of hypermethylation in prostate tumors. Multiple representative differentially methylated regions (DMRs), including immune‐related genes, such as CD40, Galectin3, OX40L, and STING, were detected in prostate tumors when compared to adjacent normal tissues. Based on an epigenetic clock model, we observed that tumors' total number of stem cell divisions and the stem cell division rate were significantly higher than adjacent normal tissues. Regarding PCa aggressiveness, 2,061 differentially methylated CpG‐sites (q < 0.05, lΔβl >.05) were identified when the grade group (GG)1 was compared with GG4/5. Among these 2,061 CpG sites, 155 probes were consistently significant in more than one comparison. Among these genes, several immune system genes, such as COL18A1, S100A2, ITGA4, HLA‐C, and ADCYAP1, have previously been linked to tumor progression in PCa. Conclusion: Several differentially methylated genes involved in immune‐oncologic pathways associated with disease risk or aggressiveness were identified. In addition, 261 African American‐specific differentially methylated genes related to the risk of PCa were identified. Objective: Undergoing surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy (aRT) at the same facility has been associated with higher overall survival (OS) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Our study investigates whether undergoing surgery and aRT at the same academic facility is associated with higher OS in major salivary gland cancer (MSGC). Methods: The 2006–2018 National Cancer Database was queried for patients with MSGC undergoing surgery at an academic facility and then aRT. Multivariable binary logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were implemented. Results: Of 2801 patients satisfying inclusion criteria, 2130 (76.0%) underwent surgery and aRT at the same academic facility. Residence in a less populated area (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.69, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.16–2.45), treatment without adjuvant chemotherapy (aOR 1.97, 95% CI 1.41–2.76), and aRT duration (aOR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01–1.04) were associated with undergoing surgery and aRT at different facilities on multivariable logistic regression adjusting for patient demographics, clinicopathologic features, and adjuvant therapy (p < 0.01). Five‐year OS was higher in patients undergoing surgery and aRT at the same academic facility (68.8% vs. 61.9%, p < 0.001). Undergoing surgery and aRT at different facilities remained associated with worse OS on multivariable Cox regression (aHR 1.41, 95% CI 1.10–1.81, p = 0.007). Conclusion: Undergoing surgery and aRT at the same academic facility is associated with higher OS in MSGC. Although undergoing surgery and aRT at the same academic facility is impractical for all patients, academic physicians should consider same‐facility treatment for complex patients who would most benefit from clear multidisciplinary communication. Applications for an antenna structure produced with additive manufacturing technology are numerous and promising. This study focuses explicitly on utilizing micro‐laser sintering (MLS) three‐dimensional (3D) printing technology to fabricate two rectangular horn antennas identical to a standard Pasternack® horn antenna, making the fabrication straightforward. The objective is to investigate how surface roughness affects antenna performance in a frequency range of 18 to 26.5 GHz. One antenna is polished and the other is left untouched, resulting in surface roughness of 4 and 6 µm, respectively, measured using a profilometer. Then, a vector network analyzer was used to assess their reflection coefficient, transmission characteristics, and radiation pattern and determine gains of 8.83 and 9.14 dBi for the polished and unpolished antennas, respectively. The study finds that both polished and unpolished antennas perform similarly, and their characteristics closely resembling simulated and standard antennas. Finally, the performance of the MLS‐printed metallic antennas is compared with horn antennas created using other 3D printing techniques. It reveals that the MLS‐printed metallic structures exhibit better performance, indicating that the MLS technology has great potential to print 3D metallic electromagnetic designs. Objective: To investigate the survival benefit of elective neck dissection (END) over neck observation in surgically resected cT1‐4 N0M0 head and neck basaloid carcinoma (HNBC). Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: The 2006 to 2017 hospital‐based National Cancer Database. Methods: Patients with surgically resected cT1‐4 N0M0 HNBC were selected. Linear, binary logistic, Kaplan‐Meier, and Cox proportional hazards regression models were implemented. Results: Of 857 patients satisfying inclusion criteria, the majority were male (77.0%) and white (88.1%) with disease of the oral cavity (21.5%) or oropharynx (42.9%) classified as high grade (76.9%) and cT1‐2 (72.9%). 389 (45.4%) patients underwent END. END utilization between 2006 and 2017 increased for cT1‐2 disease (33.3% vs 56.9%, R2 =.699) but remained relatively constant for cT3‐4 disease (66.7% vs 57.9%, R2 =.062). One‐hundred and fifteen (29.6%) ENDs detected occult nodal metastases (ONMs). The 5‐year overall survival (OS) of patients undergoing neck observation and END was 65.6% and 66.8%, respectively (P =.652). END was not associated with improved OS in survival analyses stratified by patient demographics, clinicopathologic features, and adjuvant therapy. Compared with surgery alone, adjuvant radiotherapy (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.57‐0.97, P =.031) was associated with improved OS. END (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.71‐1.28, P =.770) and ONM (HR: 1.12, 95% CI: 0.78‐1.61, P =.551) were not associated with OS. Conclusion: END is performed in nearly half of patients with HNBC but is not associated with improved OS, even after stratifying survival analyses by patient demographics, clinicopathologic features, and adjuvant therapy. Siliceous sandstone (including quartzites), petrified wood, and agates located in Alabama and Mississippi were utilized as a toolstone resource during every recognized cultural period in the Lower Mississippi Valley region of the Southeastern United States. Regrettably, these materials have not been the focus of many provenance‐related investigations. Recent analyses of quartzite and sandstone from other regions in North America and from the Pyrenees were successful in discriminating sources using petrographic techniques. The current study examines the application of visible/near‐infrared reflectance and Fourier transform infrared reflectance (FTIR) spectroscopy on sourcing siliceous materials besides chert, particularly sandstones, orthoquartzites (quartz sandstone), petrified woods, and agates. This source characterization investigation focuses on a case study involving materials gathered from eight distinct collection sites, encompassing nine different siliceous resources collected in Alabama and Mississippi. These materials were sourced from two distinct geological formations: the Hattiesburg and Tallahatta. Results demonstrate the ability of non‐destructive reflectance spectroscopy and introduces a new outlier modeling method that detects, clusters, and separately models outliers with their own set of basis vectors. Principal component analyses, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression, linear discriminant function analysis (LDA), and random forest classification are used in this paper to better identify outlier elements as well as discriminate for stone materials accurately (between 67% and 100%). Although this is the first reflectance spectroscopy investigation used to characterize these materials for provenance applications, the preliminary results compare favorably with other provenance techniques whose aim is to quantify between‐formation (inter) and within‐formation (intra) outcrop variation. The quantified and differentiated sources, based on the hyperspectral signatures of the material, will provide a better understanding of prehistoric reliance on these lithic resources and produces a proxy to determine mobility, social interaction, and other past behavior. This study investigates the escape of Mercury's sodium‐group ions (Na+‐group, including ions with m/q from 21 to 30 amu/e) and their dependence on true anomaly angle (TAA), that is, Mercury's orbital phase around the Sun, using measurements from MESSENGER. The measurements are categorized into solar wind, magnetosheath, and magnetosphere, and further divided into four TAA intervals. Na+‐group ions form escape plumes in the solar wind and magnetosheath, with higher fluxes along the solar wind's motional electric field. The total escape rates vary from 0.2 to 1 × 1025 atoms/s with the magnetosheath being the main escaping region. These rates exhibit a TAA dependence, peaking near the perihelion and similar during Mercury's remaining orbit. Despite Mercury's tenuous exosphere, Na+‐group ions escape rate is comparable to other inner planets. This can be attributed to several processes, including that Na+‐group ions may include several ion species, efficient photoionization frequency for elements within Na‐group, etc. Plain Language Summary: Atmospheric escape is defined as the loss of atmospheric particles in the form of neutrals and ions into outer space. Understanding atmospheric escape is a fundamental science question for studying the evolution of planetary atmosphere and habitability, as it can provide insight into how life can form on a planet. While atmospheric escape has been extensively studied in Venus, Earth, and Mars through in situ measurements and simulations, it remains poorly understood at Mercury. In this study, we investigate the escape of the most abundant heavy ions at Mercury, specifically the Na+‐group ions, using MESSENGER's measurements. Our findings show that the escape rates of the Na+‐group ions are dependent on Mercury's orbital phase around the Sun, exhibiting a seasonal effect with rates from 0.2 to 1 × 1025 atoms/s. This rate is comparable to the ion's escape rates at other inner planets, which is surprising given that Mercury only has a tenuous exosphere. Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) has been characterized by lower blood flow to exercising limbs and lower peak oxygen utilization (V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$), possibly associated with disease‐related changes in sympathetic (α‐adrenergic) signaling. Thus, in seven patients with HFpEF (70 ± 6 years, 3 female/4 male) and seven controls (CON) (66 ± 3 years, 3 female/4 male), we examined changes (%Δ) in leg blood flow (LBF, Doppler ultrasound) and leg V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$ to intra‐arterial infusion of phentolamine (PHEN, α‐adrenergic antagonist) or phenylephrine (PE, α1‐adrenergic agonist) at rest and during single‐leg knee‐extension exercise (0, 5 and 10 W). At rest, the PHEN‐induced increase in LBF was not different between groups, but PE‐induced reductions in LBF were lower in HFpEF (−16% ± 4% vs. −26% ± 5%, HFpEF vs. CON; P < 0.05). During exercise, the PHEN‐induced increase in LBF was greater in HFpEF at 10 W (16% ± 8% vs. 8% ± 5%; P < 0.05). PHEN increased leg V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$ in HFpEF (10% ± 3%, 11% ± 6%, 15% ± 7% at 0, 5 and 10 W; P < 0.05) but not in controls (−1% ± 9%, −4% ± 2%, −1% ± 5%; P = 0.24). The 'magnitude of sympatholysis' (PE‐induced %Δ LBF at rest – PE‐induced %Δ LBF during exercise) was lower in patients with HFpEF (−6% ± 4%, −6% ± 6%, −7% ± 5% vs. −13% ± 6%, −17% ± 5%, −20% ± 5% at 0, 5 and 10 W; P < 0.05) and was positively related to LBF, leg oxygen delivery, leg V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$, and the PHEN‐induced increase in LBF (P < 0.05). Together, these data indicate that excessive α‐adrenergic vasoconstriction restrains blood flow and limits V̇O2${{\dot{V}}_{{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}}}$ of the exercising leg in patients with HFpEF, and is related to impaired functional sympatholysis in this patient group. Background Procedure Results Conclusions 6‐mercaptopurine is a cornerstone of maintenance therapy for pediatric ALL. Response to 6MP is typically determined by the ANC. Therapeutic ANC range while receiving 6MP is between 500 and 1500/μL. In addition to desired myelosuppression, 6MP is associated with multiple adverse drug effects. Increased doses of 6MP can lead to therapeutic ANC values; however, patients may experience adverse effects before obtaining therapeutic myelosuppression, often deemed “skewed metabolism.” Allopurinol may potentially correct skewed 6MP metabolism.Pediatric patients with ALL with 6MMP and 6TGN metabolites drawn during maintenance therapy were analyzed for allopurinol use. The primary outcome evaluated the percentage of time spent in therapeutic ANC range before and after allopurinol initiation. In addition, the difference in 6MMP:6TGN ratios before and after allopurinol initiation, incidence of hepatotoxicity, and rates of relapse, were analyzed.Ninety‐five patients were included for analysis. Thirty‐two (34%) patients received allopurinol. There were no significant differences in baseline demographics between the patients who received allopurinol and those who did not. When comparing ANC values pre‐ and post‐allopurinol initiation, a statistically significant increase in the percentage of time spent in therapeutic range was observed (27% vs. 43%; p = .03). Limb immobilization causes rapid declines in muscle strength and mass. Given the role of the nervous system in immobilization‐induced weakness, targeted interventions may be able to preserve muscle strength, but not mass, and vice versa. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of two distinct interventions during 1 week of knee joint immobilization on muscle strength (isometric and concentric isokinetic peak torque), mass (bioimpedance spectroscopy and ultrasonography), and neuromuscular function (transcranial magnetic stimulation and interpolated twitch technique). Thirty‐nine healthy, college‐aged adults (21 males, 18 females) were randomized into one of four groups: immobilization only (n = 9), immobilization + action observation/mental imagery (AOMI) (n = 10), immobilization + neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) (n = 12), or control group (n = 8). The AOMI group performed daily video observation and mental imagery of knee extensions. The NMES group performed twice daily stimulation of the quadriceps femoris. Based on observed effect sizes, it appears that AOMI shows promise as a means of preserving voluntary strength, which may be modulated by neural adaptations. Strength increased from PRE to POST in the AOMI group, with +7.2% (Cohen's d = 1.018) increase in concentric isokinetic peak torque at 30°/s. However, NMES did not preserve muscle mass. Though preliminary, our findings highlight the specific nature of clinical interventions and suggest that muscle strength can be independently targeted during rehabilitation. Objectives: Sensory impairment is a hypothesized risk factor for cognitive decline; however, the psychosocial pathways are not well understood. We evaluated whether the association between visual impairment (VI) and cognitive decline was partially mediated via depressive symptoms, loneliness, or social activity. Methods: We used data from 2601 older adults enrolled in the Memory and Aging Project in 1997 and the Minority Aging Research Study in 2004 with neuropsychological tests across five domains measured annually for up to 16 years. VI was assessed with the Rosenbaum Pocket Vision Screener. Depressive symptoms, loneliness, and social activity were self‐reported using validated scales. We used structural equation models to estimate the associations of VI with baseline and change in cognitive function, directly and indirectly through each mediator (depressive symptoms, loneliness, and social activity). We evaluated mediation via "psychological distress" using a latent variable combining depressive symptoms and loneliness. Results: The association between VI and global cognitive decline was mediated via lower social activity (indirect effect) [95% confidence interval (CI)] of linear slope: −0.025 (−0.048, −0.011), via loneliness (−0.011 [95% CI: −0.028, −0.002]), and via psychological distress (−0.017 [95% CI: −0.042, −0.003]). We did not find sufficient evidence for mediation via depressive symptoms alone. Conclusions: The harmful effect of VI on cognitive decline may be partially mediated through loneliness and lower social activity. The quantity and quality of surface water are inherently connected yet are overwhelmingly studied separately in the field of remote sensing. Remotely observable water quantity (e.g., water extent, water elevation, lake/reservoir volume, and river discharge) and water quality (e.g., color, turbidity, total suspended solids, chlorophyll a, colored dissolved organic matter, and temperature) parameters of inland waterbodies interact through a series of hydrological and biogeochemical processes. In this review, we analyzed trends in remote sensing publications to understand the prevalence of studies on the quantity versus quality of open‐surface inland waterbodies (rivers, streams, lakes, and reservoirs) as well as identified opportunities for integrating both water quality and quantity sensing in future work. Our bibliometric analysis found that despite the increasing number of publications using remote sensing for inland waterbodies, few studies to date have used remote sensing tools or approaches to simultaneously study water quantity and quality. Ultimately, by providing insights into potential integration of the water quality and quantity studies, we aim to identify a pathway to advance the understanding of inland water dynamics and freshwater resources through remote sensing. While the tissue‐transparent fluorescence of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) imparts substantial potential for use in non‐invasive biosensors, the development of non‐invasive systems is yet to be realized. Here, the functionality of a SWCNT‐based nanosensor in several injectable SWCNT‐hydrogel systems, ultimately finding SWCNT encapsulation in a sulfonated methylcellulose hydrogel optimal for detection of ions, small molecules, and proteins is investigated. It is found that the hydrogel system and nanosensor signal are stable for several weeks in live mice. Then, it is found that this system successfully detects local injections of the chemotherapeutic agent doxorubicin in mice. Objectives: We previously described derivation and validation of the emergency department trigger tool (EDTT) for adverse event (AE) detection. As the first step in our multicenter study of the tool, we validated our computerized screen for triggers against manual review, establishing our use of this automated process for selecting records to review for AEs. Methods: This is a retrospective observational study of visits to three urban, academic EDs over 18 months by patients ≥ 18 years old. We reviewed 912 records: 852 with at least one of 34 triggers found by the query and 60 records with none. Two first‐level reviewers per site each manually screened for triggers. After completion, computerized query results were revealed, and reviewers could revise their findings. Second‐level reviewers arbitrated discrepancies. We compare automated versus manual screening by positive and negative predictive values (PPVs, NPVs), present population trigger frequencies, proportions of records triggered, and how often manual ratings were changed to conform with the query. Results: Trigger frequencies ranged from common (>25%) to rare (1/1000) were comparable at U.S. sites and slightly lower at the Canadian site. Proportions of triggered records ranged from 31% to 49.4%. Overall query PPV was 95.4%; NPV was 99.2%. PPVs for individual trigger queries exceeded 90% for 28–31 triggers/site and NPVs were >90% for all but three triggers at one site. Inter‐rater reliability was excellent, with disagreement on manual screening results less than 5% of the time. Overall, reviewers amended their findings 1.5% of the time when discordant with query findings, more often when the query was positive than when negative (47% vs. 23%). Conclusions: The EDTT trigger query performed very well compared to manual review. With some expected variability, trigger frequencies were similar across sites and proportions of triggered records ranged 31%–49%. Objective: There is growing evidence that genetic data are of benefit in the rheumatology outpatient setting by aiding early diagnosis. A genetic probability tool (G‐PROB) has been developed to aid diagnosis has not yet been tested in a real‐world setting. Our aim was to assess whether G‐PROB could aid diagnosis in the rheumatology outpatient setting using data from the Norfolk Arthritis Register (NOAR), a prospective observational cohort of patients presenting with early inflammatory arthritis. Methods: Genotypes and clinician diagnoses were obtained from patients from NOAR. Six G‐probabilities (0%–100%) were created for each patient based on known disease‐associated odds ratios of published genetic risk variants, each corresponding to one disease of rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, gout, or "other diseases." Performance of the G‐probabilities compared with clinician diagnosis was assessed. Results: We tested G‐PROB on 1,047 patients. Calibration of G‐probabilities with clinician diagnosis was high, with regression coefficients of 1.047, where 1.00 is ideal. G‐probabilities discriminated clinician diagnosis with pooled areas under the curve (95% confidence interval) of 0.85 (0.84–0.86). G‐probabilities <5% corresponded to a negative predictive value of 96.0%, for which it was possible to suggest >2 unlikely diseases for 94% of patients and >3 for 53.7% of patients. G‐probabilities >50% corresponded to a positive predictive value of 70.4%. In 55.7% of patients, the disease with the highest G‐probability corresponded to clinician diagnosis. Conclusion: G‐PROB converts complex genetic information into meaningful and interpretable conditional probabilities, which may be especially helpful at eliminating unlikely diagnoses in the rheumatology outpatient setting. Aim: PIONEER REAL Canada examined real‐world clinical outcomes associated with the use of once‐daily oral semaglutide in adults with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods: This was a 34‐ to 44‐week, multicentre, prospective, open‐label, non‐interventional study in adults who were treatment‐naive to injectable glucose‐lowering medication and initiated oral semaglutide in routine clinical practice. The primary endpoint was the change in glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) from baseline to the end of the study (EoS). Secondary endpoints assessed at EoS were change from baseline in body weight (BW); the proportion of participants reaching HbA1c levels <7% and the composite endpoints, HbA1c reduction ≥1% point with BW reduction ≥3% and ≥5%; and treatment satisfaction measured using Diabetes Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaires (DTSQ) status and change. Primary analyses were based on the in‐study observation period. Results: In total, 182 participants initiated oral semaglutide (mean age, 58.6 years; HbA1c, 8.0%; BW, 93.7 kg). The estimated changes (95% confidence interval) from baseline to EoS in HbA1c and BW were −1.09% points (−1.24, −0.94; p <.0001) and −7.17% (−8.24, −6.11; p <.0001), respectively. At EoS, 53.7% of participants had HbA1c levels <7%; 39.3% and 31.6% reached HbA1c reduction ≥1% point plus BW reduction ≥3% and ≥5%, respectively. Treatment satisfaction significantly increased (DTSQ status, +4.47 points; DTSQ change, 11.83 points; both p <.0001). At EoS, 75.3% of participants remained on oral semaglutide (55.5% received oral semaglutide 14 mg). No new safety signals were identified for oral semaglutide. Conclusions: In PIONEER REAL Canada, participants treated with oral semaglutide in routine clinical practice experienced clinically relevant reductions in HbA1c and BW and increased treatment satisfaction. Objectives: Determine if intensive local therapy (i.e., local surgery or radiation) has a survival benefit for patients presenting with distantly metastatic oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). Methods: Retrospective population‐based cohort study of patients in the National Cancer Database presenting with distantly metastatic OPSCC. Overall survival (OS) was compared for patients receiving systemic therapy alone or in combination with local surgery or curative dose radiation, controlling for various clinicodemographic factors. Results: Between 2010 and 2015, 627 patients presented with newly diagnosed, metastatic OPSCC and an initial treatment course including systemic chemotherapy. Multivariable analysis demonstrated that local radiation therapy was independently associated with improved OS (OR 0.64, CI [0.51–0.81]); local surgery was not independently associated with improved OS (OR 0.99, CI [0.65–1.53]). Higher T stages were associated with worse OS (OR 1.69, CI [1.14–2.50] for T3 and OR 1.77, CI [1.22–2.58] for T4 compared to T1). HPV‐positive (HPV+) tumors were associated with improved OS compared to HPV‐ (OR 0.79, CI [0.64–0.97]). Multiagent chemotherapy was associated with improved OS compared to single‐agent (OR 0.78, CI [0.62–1.00]). The best survival for the entire cohort and for HPV+ patients was for radiation with systemic therapy and the worst survival for systemic therapy alone. Conclusions: Curative dose local radiotherapy in addition to systemic therapy is associated with improved OS compared to systemic therapy alone in patients presenting with distantly metastatic OPSCC. There is not a significant survival benefit for local surgery in addition to systemic therapy in this patient population, regardless of HPV status. Objective: To compare surgical and nonsurgical definitive treatment in cT4b major salivary gland cancer (MSGC). Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: The 2004 to 2019 National Cancer Database. Methods: The NCDB was queried for patients with cT4b MSGC (N = 976). Patients undergoing definitive treatment with (1) surgical resection + adjuvant therapy, (2) radiotherapy (RT) alone, or (3) chemoradiotherapy (CRT) were included in Kaplan‐Meier and Cox survival analyses. Results: Of 219 patients undergoing definitive treatment, 148 (67.6%) underwent surgical resection + adjuvant therapy and 71 (32.4%) underwent RT or CRT. There were no documented mortalities within 90 days of surgical resection. Tumor diameter and nodal metastasis were associated with decreased odds of undergoing definitive treatment (P < 0.025). Patients with positive surgical margins (PSM) had higher 5‐year overall survival (OS) than those undergoing definitive RT or CRT (48.5% vs 30.1%, P = 0.018) and similar 5‐year OS as those with negative margins (48.5% vs 54.0%, P = 0.205). Surgical resection + adjuvant therapy (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.55, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.37‐0.84) was associated with higher OS than definitive RT or CRT (P < 0.025). A separate cohort of 961 patients with cT4a tumors undergoing surgical resection + adjuvant therapy was created; cT4a and cT4b (hazard ratio: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.80‐1.29, P = 0.896) tumors had similar OS. Conclusion: A minority of patients with cT4b MSGC undergo definitive treatment. Surgical resection + adjuvant therapy was safe and associated with higher OS than definitive RT or CRT, despite high rate of PSM. This article reflects on the potential value and many pitfalls of underpowered studies to help authors and readers consider whether and how they contribute meaningfully to the published literature. A basic introduction to power and sample size calculations is provided. Several problems that can arise in analysis and publication of underpowered studies are described. In addition, features of underpowered studies that may provide value are proposed, including when the hypothesis test of interest is a limited part of the story, the data is rich enough to showcase interesting features of the population of interest, when the rarity or ubiquity of events is an important finding, and when the study is preregistered to reduce the impact of publication bias. This study offers a new perspective on the work of Italian theorist Giorgio Agamben, arguing that his recent engagements with the Christian tradition can be productively interpreted as a kind of political theology. As a way of making this claim, I place Agamben in dialogue with German Catholic theologian Johann Baptist Metz, as perhaps the clearest analogue in recent political theology, examining their shared genealogical roots in Marxist philosophy and the Frankfurt School, as well their mutual interests in early‐Christian and medieval apocalyptic. Furthermore, I argue that their respective projects can mutually inform one another, and together be regarded as a corrective to certain aspects of contemporary Augustinian theory. Focusing on the question of the victim, I contend that Agamben's and Metz’s approach to “universality” can serve to illuminate and to challenge some of the more “particularistic” and exclusionary elements of the Augustinian form. Recent observations suggest that El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impacts basal melting of West Antarctic ice shelves, yet sparse ocean observations limit our understanding of the associated processes. Here we investigate how ENSO events modulate subsurface West Antarctic shelf temperatures using high‐resolution global ocean‐sea ice model simulations. During El Niño, the subsurface shelf warming between 150 m and the shelf bottom can be up to 0.5°C in front of ice shelves. This warming arises from a weaker Amundsen Sea Low (ASL) and weaker coastal easterlies that reduce on‐shelf Ekman transport of cold surface waters, enabling enhanced transport of warm Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the shelf. A largely opposite response occurs during La Niña, with a stronger ASL and stronger Ekman transport that results in less cross‐shelf CDW transport and cooling in the subsurface. These findings have implications for interpreting basal melting on interannual to decadal time‐scales in West Antarctica. Plain Language Summary: El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the Earth's dominant year‐to‐year climate variation. The impacts of its two phases, El Niño and La Niña, extend from the tropics to Antarctica through atmospheric waves. Past studies have suggested that West Antarctic ice shelves melt more during El Niño because of warmer ocean waters at the ice shelf bases. However, oceanic changes during El Niño lead to warming on the shelf near the ice which is difficult to isolate. That is because ENSO is only one of many drivers that impact shelf water temperatures. In this work, we simulate isolated ENSO events using an ocean circulation model. We show that during El Niño, the on‐shelf flow of cold surface waters in West Antarctica, driven by coastal easterly winds, is reduced because the winds weaken. To balance out this mass deficit at the surface, more warm CDW flows onto the continental shelf below. During La Niña, we see a largely opposite response. Stronger coastal easterlies increase the on‐shelf flow of cold surface waters and less CDW is flowing onto the shelf. Our results show the link between ENSO and mass loss of the West Antarctic ice shelves and ice sheet. Background: Choledochal cysts are rare congenital anomalies of the biliary tree that may lead to obstruction, chronic inflammation, infection, and malignancy. There is wide variation in the timing of resection, operative approach, and reconstructive techniques. Outcomes have rarely been compared on a national level. Methods: We queried the Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) to identify patients who underwent choledochal cyst excision from 2015 to 2020. Patients were stratified by hepaticoduodenostomy (HD) versus Roux‐en‐Y hepaticojejunostomy (RNYHJ), use of minimally invasive surgery (MIS), and age at surgery. We collected several outcomes, including length of stay (LOS), reoperation, complications, blood transfusions, and readmission rate. We compared outcomes between cohorts using nonparametric tests and multivariate regression. Results: Altogether, 407 patients met the study criteria, 150 (36.8%) underwent RNYHJ reconstruction, 100 (24.6%) underwent MIS only, and 111 (27.3%) were less than one year old. Patients who underwent open surgery were younger (median age 2.31 vs. 4.25 years, p = 0.002) and more likely underwent RNYHJ reconstruction (42.7% vs. 19%, p = 0.001). On adjusted analysis, the outcomes of LOS, reoperation, transfusion, and complications were similar between the type of reconstruction, operative approach, and age. Patients undergoing RNYHJ had lower rates of readmission than patients undergoing HD (4.0% vs. 10.5%, OR 0.34, CI [0.12, 0.79], p = 0.02). Conclusions: In children with choledochal cysts, most short‐term outcomes were similar between reconstructive techniques, operative approach, and age at resection, although HD reconstruction was associated with a higher readmission rate in this study. Background and Objective: Shape‐sensing robotic‐assisted bronchoscopy (ssRAB) has expanded as an important diagnostic tool for peripheral pulmonary nodules (PPNs), with diagnostic yields ranging from 60% to 88%. However, sampling and diagnosing PPN less than 2 cm in size has historically been challenging. Mobile cone‐beam computed tomography (mCBCT) has been recently integrated into ssRAB to improve diagnostic accuracy, but its added value remains uncertain. We aim to describe the role of mCBCT and determine if it provides any diagnostic advantage. Methods: A multicentre, retrospective study on the use of ssRAB and mCBCT in two tertiary care institutions: Mayo Clinic Florida and Massachusetts General Hospital. The primary outcome was diagnostic yield and sensitivity for malignancy of ssRAB complemented with mCBCT, compared to ssRAB with the standard 2D fluoroscopy. Results: A total of 192 nodules were biopsied from 173 patients. mCBCT was used in 117 (60.9%) nodules. The overall diagnostic yield was 85.4%. Diagnostic yield between subgroups with and without mCBCT was 83.8% and 88% (p = 0.417), respectively. The mCBCT group had fewer solid nodules (65.8% vs. 81.3%, p = 0.020) and a higher number of ground‐glass nodules (10.3% vs. 1.3%, p = 0.016). Conclusion: Overall, diagnostic yield between subgroups with and without mCBCT was similar. The complementary use of mCBCT to ssRAB allows proceduralists to target more complex and subsolid PPNs with a diagnostic yield comparable to simple solid PPNs while maintaining an excellent safety profile. Wastewater‐based surveillance has become an important tool for research groups and public health agencies investigating and monitoring the COVID‐19 pandemic and other public health emergencies including other pathogens and drug abuse. While there is an emerging body of evidence exploring the possibility of predicting COVID‐19 infections from wastewater signals, there remain significant challenges for statistical modeling. Longitudinal observations of viral copies in municipal wastewater can be influenced by noisy datasets and missing values with irregular and sparse samplings. We propose an integrative Bayesian framework to predict daily positive cases from weekly wastewater observations with missing values via functional data analysis techniques. In a unified procedure, the proposed analysis models severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 RNA wastewater signals as a realization of a smooth process with error and combines the smooth process with COVID‐19 cases to evaluate the prediction of positive cases. Inverted metamorphic Ga0.3In0.7As photovoltaic converters with sub‐0.60 eV bandgaps grown on InP and GaAs are presented. Threading dislocation densities are 1.3 ± 0.6 × 106 and 8.9 ± 1.7 × 106 cm−2 on InP and GaAs, respectively. The devices generate open‐circuit voltages of 0.386 and 0.383 V, respectively, under irradiance producing a short‐circuit current density of ≈10 A cm−2, yielding bandgap‐voltage offsets of 0.20 and 0.21 V. Power and broadband reflectance measurements are used to estimate thermophotovoltaic (TPV) efficiency. The InP‐based cell is estimated to yield 1.09 W cm−2 at 1100 °C versus 0.92 W cm−2 for the GaAs‐based cell, with efficiencies of 16.8 versus 9.2%. The efficiencies of both devices are limited by sub‐bandgap absorption, with power weighted sub‐bandgap reflectances of 81% and 58%, respectively, the majority of which is assumed to occur in the graded buffers. The 1100 °C TPV efficiencies are estimated to increase to 24.0% and 20.7% in structures with the graded buffer removed, if previously demonstrated reflectance is achieved. These devices also have application to laser power conversion in the 2.0–2.3 µm atmospheric window. Peak laser power converter efficiencies of 36.8% and 32.5% are estimated under 2.0 µm irradiances of 1.86 and 2.81 W cm−2, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the field of low‐dimensional materials (1D or 2D) grows and more complex and intriguing structures are continuing to be found, there is an emerging need for techniques to characterize the nanoscale mechanical properties of all kinds of 1D/2D materials, in particular in their most practical state: sitting on an underlying substrate. While traditional nanoindentation techniques cannot accurately determine the transverse Young's modulus at the necessary scale without large indentations depths and effects to and from the substrate, herein an atomic‐force‐microscopy‐based modulated nanomechanical measurement technique with Angstrom‐level resolution (MoNI/ÅI) is presented. This technique enables non‐destructive measurements of the out‐of‐plane elasticity of ultra‐thin materials with resolution sufficient to eliminate any contributions from the substrate. This method is used to elucidate the multi‐layer stiffness dependence of graphene deposited via chemical vapor deposition and discover a peak transverse modulus in two‐layer graphene. The Outer Continental Shelf of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is populated with numerous oil and natural gas (ONG) platforms which produce NOx (NOx = NO + NO2), a major component of air pollution. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is mandated to ensure that the air quality of coastal states is not degraded by these emissions. As part of a NASA‐BOEM collaboration, we conducted a satellite data‐based analysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) patterns and trends in the GOM. Data from the OMI and TROPOMI sensors were used to obtain 18+ year records of tropospheric column (TrC) NO2 in three GOM regions: (a) Houston urban area, (b) near shore area off the Louisiana coast, and a (c) deepwater area off the Louisiana coast. The 2004–2022 time series show a decreasing trend for the urban (−0.027 DU/decade) and near shore (−0.0022 DU/decade) areas, and an increasing trend (0.0019 DU/decade) for the deepwater area. MERRA‐2 wind and TROPOMI NO2 data were used to reveal several NO2 hotspots (up to 25% above background values) under calm wind conditions near individual platforms. The NO2 signals from these deepwater platforms and the high density of shallow water platforms closer to shore were confirmed by TrC NO2 anomalies of up to 10%, taking into account the monthly TrC NO2 climatology over the GOM. The results presented in this study establish a baseline for future estimates of emissions from the ONG hotspots and provide a methodology for analyzing NO2 measurements from the new geostationary TEMPO instrument. The ONG deepwater platforms enhance NO2 background amounts by 7%–13% on average, and up to 25% for the Mars and Olympus platforms combined. A 17‐month‐old Holstein bull presented from a stud in the Midwest United States to the University of Wisconsin‐Madison Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory for euthanasia and necropsy following isolation of a multi‐drug resistant strain of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Dublin from cryopreserved semen cultured as part of the stud's protocol for random sampling for bacterial culture. Additionally, the bull had five consecutive monthly positive Salmonella ser. Dublin enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay tests with percent positivity ranging from 135 to 157. Antemortem diagnostics included physical examination, complete blood count, biochemistry and blood culture. A postmortem examination was performed with culture, PCR and histopathology of numerous tissues and fluids. Salmonella ser. Dublin was cultured from urine, bile, faeces, prostate, seminal vesicles, preputial mucosa, colon and small intestine. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of Salmonella ser. Summary: The biosynthesis of specialized metabolites is strictly regulated by environmental inputs such as the day–night cycle, but the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. In Petunia hybrida cv. Mitchell flowers, the biosynthesis and emission of volatile compounds display a diurnal pattern with a peak in the evening to attract nocturnal pollinators.Using petunia flowers as a model system, we found that chromatin level regulation, especially histone acetylation, plays an essential role in mediating the day–night oscillation of the biosynthetic gene network of specialized metabolites.By performing time‐course chromatin immunoprecipitation assays for histone modifications, we uncovered that a specific group of genes involved in the regulation, biosynthesis, and emission of floral volatile compounds, which displays the greatest magnitude in day–night oscillating gene expression, is associated with highly dynamic histone acetylation marks H3K9ac and H3K27ac. Specifically, the strongest oscillating genes featured a drastic removal of histone acetylation marks at night, potentially to shut down the biosynthesis of floral volatile compounds during the morning when they are not needed. Inhibiting daytime histone acetylation led to a compromised evening induction of these genes.Overall, our study suggested an active role of chromatin modification in the diurnal oscillation of specialized metabolic network. Maximal oxygen (O2) uptake (V̇O2max${\dot{V}}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}{\mathrm{max}}}$) is an important parameter with utility in health and disease. However, the relative importance of O2 transport and utilization capacities in limiting muscle V̇O2max${\dot{V}}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}{\mathrm{max}}}$ before and after endurance exercise training is not well understood. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the mechanisms determining muscle V̇O2max${\dot{V}}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}{\mathrm{max}}}$ pre‐ and post‐endurance exercise training in initially sedentary participants. In five initially sedentary young males, radial arterial and femoral venous PO2${P}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}$ (blood samples), leg blood flow (thermodilution), and myoglobin (Mb) desaturation (1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) were measured during maximal single‐leg knee‐extensor exercise (KE) breathing either 12%, 21% or 100% O2 both pre and post 8 weeks of KE training (1 h, 3 times per week). Mb desaturation was converted to intracellular PO2${P}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}$ using an O2 half‐saturation pressure of 3.2 mmHg. Pre‐training muscle V̇O2max${\dot{V}}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}{\mathrm{max}}}$ was not significantly different across inspired O2 conditions (12%: 0.47 ± 0.10; 21%: 0.52 ± 0.13; 100%: 0.54 ± 0.01 L min–1, all q > 0.174), despite significantly greater muscle mean capillary–intracellular PO2${P}_{{{\mathrm{O}}}_{\mathrm{2}}}$ gradients in normoxia (34 ± 3 mmHg) and hyperoxia (40 ± 7 mmHg) than hypoxia (29 ± 5 mmHg, both q < 0.024). Background: Latent TGFβ binding protein‐2 (LTBP2) is a fibrillin 1 binding component of the microfibril. LTBP2 is the only LTBP protein that does not bind any isoforms of TGFβ, although it may interfere with the function of other LTBPs or interact with other signaling pathways. Results: Here, we investigate mice lacking Ltbp2 (Ltbp2−/−) and identify multiple phenotypes that impact bodyweight and fat mass, and affect bone and skin development. The alterations in skin and bone development are particularly noteworthy since the strength of these tissues is differentially affected by loss of Ltbp2. Interestingly, some tissues that express high levels of Ltbp2, such as the aorta and lung, do not have a developmental or homeostatic phenotype. Conclusions: Analysis of these mice show that LTBP2 has complex effects on development through direct effects on the extracellular matrix (ECM) or on signaling pathways that are known to regulate the ECM. Among nearly 300 near‐Mercury tail current sheet crossings performed by the MESSENGER spacecraft, we identified 37 traversals of an asymmetric current sheet, wherein the lobe densities on opposite sides differ by a factor of three or more. These asymmetric current sheet crossings primarily occur on the dawnside. A global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation was found to be in excellent agreement with the observations. The results suggest that the north–south density asymmetry is caused by solar wind entering via an upstream‐connected window in one hemisphere. Furthermore, the Parker spiral interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) controls the near‐tail density asymmetries, whereas Mercury's offset dipole magnetic field controls those in mid‐ or distant‐tail regions. We propose that hemispheric asymmetries in Mercury's magnetospheric convection occur under strong IMF conditions. Plain Language Summary: Mercury possesses a small magnetosphere owing to its weak planetary magnetic field and strong interactions with the solar wind in the inner heliosphere. The transport process of the solar wind mass and energy into its magnetosphere remains unclear. Previous MESSENGER observations suggest that although the Earth‐like plasma mantle is detected inside the near‐tail magnetopause in normal IMF magnitudes, it is not a permanent feature of Mercury's magnetosphere. Here we report, for the first time, that solar wind ions can enter deep into the near‐tail region via an upstream‐connected window in one hemisphere and form a density‐asymmetric current sheet under strong IMF conditions. Through MHD simulations, we revealed tail dawn–dusk asymmetries during the transport of solar wind plasma. Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising technology for long‐duration energy storage; but they suffer from inefficiencies in part due to the overvoltages at the electrode surface. In this work, more than 70 electrode treatments are reviewed that are previously shown to reduce the overvoltages and improve performance for vanadium RFBs (VRFBs), the most commercialized RFB technology. However, identifying treatments that improve performance the most and whether they are industrially implementable is challenging. This study attempts to address this challenge by comparing treatments under similar operating conditions and accounting for the treatment process complexity. The different treatments are compared at laboratory and industrial scale based on criteria for VRFB performance, treatment stability, economic feasibility, and ease of industrial implementation. Thermal, plasma, electrochemical oxidation, CO2 treatments, as well as Bi, Ag, and Cu catalysts loaded on electrodes are identified as the most promising for adoption in large scale VRFBs. The similarity in electrode treatments for aqueous‐organic RFBs (AORFBs) and VRFBs is also identified. The need of standardization in RFBs testing along with fundamental studies to understand charge transfer reactions in redox active species used in RFBs moving forward is emphasized. Ecosystem function is a foundational part of ecosystem health, but it is often neglected in the practice of ecosystem monitoring. We conducted a review of freshwater ecosystem management literature, analysing 60 documents across multiple organisations to understand the prevalence of function in conceptualisations and measures of ecosystem health. Only 28% (n = 13) of analysed documents included definitions of waterway health that included function, and only 30% (n = 18) integrated function into their conceptualisations of waterway health. More generally, we observed noticeable deviation in analysed documents from management best practices advocated for by contemporary ecosystem science – including unclear rationales, vague language, and imprecise metrics for assessing waterway health. We discuss these findings in broader ecosystem management contexts. Our findings support previous observations of a strong structural bias in current ecosystem health monitoring and suggest the need for closer examinations into the processes and rationales by which such an important factor could be absent from monitoring programs. We used structural equation modeling to test client meaningful experiences in counseling and the therapeutic working alliance (TWA) as predictors of affective distress, controlling for clients' age, gender, race and ethnicity, and length of counseling relationship. In a sample of 306 adult clients engaging in counseling, we a found statistically significant relationship between client meaningful experiences in counseling and the TWA (r = 0.80, p < 0.001). There was a significant and negative direct effect from client meaningful experiences in counseling to affective distress (β = −0.45, p < 0.001). However, we did not find a significant direct effect of the TWA on affective distress (β = −0.00, p = 0.97). Implications for counselors, supervisors, and counselor educators are discussed. Objective: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) may result from prolonged intubation where fibrotic scar tissue narrows the airway. The scar forms by differentiated myofibroblasts secreting excessive extracellular matrix (ECM). TGF‐β1 is widely accepted as a regulator of fibrosis; however, it is unclear how biomechanical pathways co‐regulate fibrosis. Therefore, we phenotyped fibroblasts from pediatric patients with SGS to explore how key signaling pathways, TGF‐β and Hippo, impact scarring and assess the impact of inhibiting these pathways with potential therapeutic small molecules SB525334 and DRD1 agonist dihydrexidine hydrochloride (DHX). Methods: Laryngeal fibroblasts isolated from subglottic as well as distal control biopsies of patients with evolving and maturing subglottic stenosis were assessed by α‐smooth muscle actin immunostaining and gene expression for α‐SMA, FN, HGF, and CTGF markers. TGF‐β and Hippo signaling pathways were modulated during TGF‐β1‐induced fibrosis using the inhibitor SB525334 or DHX and analyzed by RT‐qPCR for differential gene expression and atomic force microscopy for ECM stiffness. Results: SGS fibroblasts exhibited higher α‐SMA staining and greater inflammatory cytokine and fibrotic marker expression upon TGF‐β1 stimulation (p < 0.05). SB525334 restored levels to baseline by reducing SMAD2/3 nuclear translocation (p < 0.0001) and pro‐fibrotic gene expression (p < 0.05). ECM stiffness of stenotic fibroblasts was greater than healthy fibroblasts and was restored to baseline by Hippo pathway modulation using SB525334 and DHX (p < 0.01). Conclusion: We demonstrate that distinct fibroblast phenotypes from diseased and healthy regions of pediatric SGS patients respond differently to TGF‐β1 stimulation, and SB525334 has the superior potential for subglottic stenosis treatment by simultaneously modulating TGF‐β and Hippo signaling pathways. Excessive immune activation and immunosuppression are opposing factors that contribute to the dysregulated innate and adaptive immune responses seen in severe inflammation and sepsis. Here, a novel analog of the histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi), suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA‐OH), was incorporated into immunomodulatory poly(lactic acid)‐based nanoparticles (iNP‐SAHA) by employing a prodrug approach through the covalent modification of poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic acid) (PLGA) with SAHA‐OH. iNP‐SAHA formulation allowed for controlled incorporation and delivery of SAHA‐OH from iNP‐SAHA and treatment led to multimodal biological responses including significant reductions in proinflammatory cytokine secretions and gene expression, while increasing the survival of primary macrophages under lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Using a lethal LPS‐induced endotoxemia mouse model of sepsis, iNP‐SAHA administration improved the survival of mice in a dose‐dependent manner and tended to improve survival at the lowest doses compared to iNP control. Further, iNP‐SAHA reduced the levels of plasma proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines associated with sepsis more significantly than iNP and similarly improved inflammation‐induced spleen and liver toxicity as iNP, supporting its potential polypharmacological activity. Background: Cognitive reserve and brain maintenance may explain individual differences in trajectories of cognitive and brain aging due to various life exposures (e.g., education, cognitive enrichment). Cognitive reserve refers to the advantages that life exposures exert on cognitive abilities despite brain aging or disease; brain maintenance refers to the protective effects of life exposures on the brain itself (e.g., reduced rate of neuropathology accumulation). Previous findings showed that early‐life cognitive enrichment (ELCE) was associated with slower cognitive decline, which was partially mediated through global Alzheimer's disease pathology. Building on this work, this study investigated mediation by β‐amyloid and tau pathology (reflecting brain maintenance) as well as moderation by early‐ and mid‐life cognitive enrichment (ELCE, MLCE; reflecting cognitive reserve) on cognitive functioning at last visit proximate to death. Method: There were 1015 community‐based participants (M baseline age = 82.57±6.35) from the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP) and Minority Aging Research Study (MARS) cohorts, who completed annual cognitive and clinical assessments. ELCE and MLCE composite measures were derived from z‐scored self‐reported indicators obtained at baseline (Table 1). Summary measures of β‐amyloid and tau burden were derived from immunohistochemistry at autopsy. Late‐life cognition was measured using a global composite of 19 z‐scored neuropsychological tests obtained at last visit. To test for cognitive reserve, separate linear regression models examined whether ELCE and MLCE moderated relations between β‐amyloid or tau and cognition, adjusted for age at death and sex. To test for brain maintenance, a series of mediation analyses examined whether β‐amyloid and/or tau burden mediated the relationship of ELCE and MLCE with cognition. Result: ELCE (p =.005) and MLCE (p =.005) moderated the relationship between tau—but not β‐amyloid—and late‐life cognition proximate to death (Figure 1). Mediation analyses revealed an indirect effect of β‐amyloid—but not tau—on the relation between ELCE (B = 0.058, p =.004) and MLCE (B = 0.040, p =.03) and late‐life cognition (Figure 2). Conclusion: ELCE and MLCE improve late‐life cognition partially through reducing β‐amyloid, but not tau, accumulation (i.e., brain maintenance). Addition of 1‐adamantyl azide to 4 generates the bridging μ3‐nitrenoid adduct [K(THF)3][(F,tbsL)Zn2Ni(μ3‐NAd)] (5). EPR spectroscopy reveals that the anionic cluster possesses a doublet ground state (S = 1/2 ${{ 1/2 }}$). Cyclic voltammetry of 5 reveals two fully reversible redox events. The dianionic nitrenoid [K2(THF)9][(F,tbsL)Zn2Ni(μ3‐NAd)] (6) was isolated and characterized while the neutral redox isomer was observed to undergo both intra‐ and intermolecular H‐atom abstraction processes. Ni K‐edge XAS studies suggest a divalent oxidation state for the Ni centres in both the monoanionic and dianionic [Zn2Ni] nitrenoid complexes. However, DFT analysis suggests Ni‐borne oxidation for 5.
