Objective: Two percent of the Japanese population is comprised of foreign residents with further increase expected due to immigration policy revisions. The purpose of this paper is to examine the healthcare needs and difficulties experienced by foreign residents in Japan by level of their Japanese language fluency. Design: A quantitative, descriptive design was used. Sample: We surveyed foreign residents in the greater Tokyo area (N = 209). Measurements: The research team created the survey questions and the contents of the survey include foreign residents' experiences during their visits or stays at medical and public health facilities in Japan. Results: More than 90% of the participants or their families visited medical facilities in Japan regardless of Japanese language fluency; however, those with less Japanese language fluency experienced statistically significant uneasiness or inconvenience concerning communication compared to those with native Japanese language fluency (p =.000). Conclusions: Nurses in Japan may benefit from additional training related to use of interpreters as well as education about diversity and cultural humility. Aim: The paper examines recent time trends, explores potentially influential background factors and discusses prevention strategies of pregnancy among girls under 15 years of age in Japan. Methods: Using Japanese government data, we first analyzed time trends of early adolescence (<15 years of age) abortion, live birth and child sexual abuse from 2003 to 2010. Second, we analyzed ecological correlations of early adolescent pregnancy (abortion, live birth and stillbirth) with pregnancy in other age groups, child sexual abuse, and indicators of juvenile victimization and juvenile delinquency, using prefectural data. Results: We found that rates of both abortion and live birth in early adolescents have increased since 2005 (annual percent change 5.3% and 2.3%, respectively), despite declining rates in older age groups. The abortion ratio in early adolescence remained the highest among all age groups in Japan. The early adolescent pregnancy rate showed significant correlation with the rates of juvenile victimization of welfare crimes (obscenity, alcohol drinking, smoking and drug use) ( Spearman's rank correlation coefficient [rs] = 0.42, P = 0.00) and juvenile delinquency among junior high school students (12-14 years of age) (rs = 0.69, P = 0.00). Conclusion: The observed rise in rates of abortion, live birth and child sexual abuse among early adolescents along with strong ecological correlations of their pregnancy rate with juvenile victimization and delinquency indicators suggests that epidemiological investigation and public health programs at the individual and community levels are needed to address the complex social roots of these trends and to produce effective improvements in early adolescent reproductive health. Polypharmacy, which refers to the situation of a patient taking more medications than is clinically necessary, has become a major problem in recent years. Although the effects of medications on pressure ulcers have been reported, there are no reports on the impact of the total number of medications on pressure ulcers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of number of medications on the severity of pressure ulcers. Participants included 94 patients who were admitted to Chiba University Hospital with pressure ulcers between April 2013 and March 2021. Univariate analysis identified ulcer depth, weight loss and anticoagulant use to be factors that contributed to the severity of pressure ulcers. Multiple regression analysis was performed for six variables, namely, the number of medications, ulcer depth, weight loss and anticoagulant use, as well as diabetes status and total serum protein level, which have been reported to be associated with pressure ulcers in previous studies. The following independent risk factors were identified: weight loss (β 0.207, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.700–3.193; p = 0.003), anticoagulant use (β 0.161, 95% CI 0.271–3.088; p = 0.020) and ulcer depth (β 0.719, 95% CI 7.172–10.329; p < 0.001). The number of medications was not a significant factor. This study revealed that the number of medications a patient is taking does not affect the severity of pressure ulcers. Previous papers have reported that clusterin (CLU, also called apolipoprotein J) maintains amyloid β-peptide (Aβ) solubility and protects against Aβ neurotoxicity. Recently, two large genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified that a specific single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) on the gene has been reported to modify the risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present study aimed to investigate whether common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of the CLU gene are associated with AD. Six SNP, genotyped using TaqMan technology, were analyzed using a case-control study design. Furthermore, an analysis of the cases divided according to apolipoprotein E (APO E) status was also carried out. Our case-control dataset consisted of 180 AD patients and 130 age-matched controls. The present study failed to detect any association between the SNP of the CLU gene and AD. Although rs7982 and rs1532277 showed marginal association in the APO E4 negative group, the linkage disequilibrium analysis results suggest this to be a false positive. The negative associations were mainly the result of our small sample size. Larger genetic studies in different ethnics and future meta-analysis are needed to clarify the relationship between the CLU gene and AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: We compared Japan nurse practitioner‐led care and physician trainee‐led care in terms of patients' length of stay in a secondary emergency department in Japan. Methods: This was a retrospective observational study, utilizing medical records. Participants (n = 1419; mean age = 63.9 ± 23.4 years; 52.3% men) were patients transferred to the emergency department by ambulance between April 2016 and March 2018 in western Tokyo. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed, with length of stay as the dependent variable and factors related to the length of stay, including medical care leaders, as the independent variable. Results: Approximately half of the patients (n = 763; 53.8%) received Japan nurse practitioner‐led care. Patients' length of stay was significantly shorter, by 6 min, in the Japan nurse practitioner‐led care group, compared with the physician trainee‐led care group (unstandardized coefficient: −6.81; 95% confidence interval: −13.35 to −0.26; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Patients' shorter length of stay in the Japan nurse practitioner group, compared with the physician trainee group, suggests that Japan nurse practitioners are not inferior to physician trainees in terms of the time spent to manage patients. Research collaboration is promoted by governments and research funders, but if the relative prevalence and merits of collaboration vary internationally then different national and disciplinary strategies may be needed to promote it. This study compares the team size and field normalized citation impact of research across all 27 Scopus broad fields in the 10 countries with the most journal articles indexed in Scopus 2008–2012. The results show that team size varies substantially by discipline and country, with Japan (4.2) having two‐thirds more authors per article than the United Kingdom (2.5). Solo authorship is rare in China (4%) but common in the United Kingdom (27%). While increasing team size associates with higher citation impact in almost all countries and fields, this association is much weaker in China than elsewhere. There are also field differences in the association between citation impact and collaboration. For example, larger team sizes in the Business, Management & Accounting category do not seem to associate with greater research impact, and for China and India, solo authorship associates with higher citation impact in this field. Overall, there are substantial international and field differences in the extent to which researchers collaborate and the extent to which collaboration associates with higher citation impact. The aim of this multicentre study was to investigate the effect of prosthetic restoration for missing posterior teeth on mastication in patients with shortened dental arches ( SDAs). Partially dentate patients who had an intact teeth in anterior region and missed distal molar(s) (2-12 missing occlusal units) classified as Kennedy Class I or Class II were recruited from seven university-based dental hospitals in Japan. Of the 125 subjects who underwent baseline (pre-treatment) and follow-up/post-treatment evaluation, 53 chose no replacement of missing teeth and 72 chose treatment with removable partial dentures ( n = 53) or implant-supported fixed partial dentures ( n = 19). Objective masticatory performance ( MP) was evaluated using a gummy jelly test. Perception of chewing ability ( CA) was rated using a food intake questionnaire. In the no-treatment group, mean MP and CA scores at baseline were similar to those at follow-up evaluation ( P > 0·05). In the treatment group, mean MP after treatment was significantly greater than the pre-treatment mean MP ( P < 0·05). However, the mean perceived CA in the treatment groups was similar at pre- and post-treatment ( P > 0·05). In a subgroup analysis of subjects in the treatment group, subjects with lower pre-treatment CA showed a significant CA increase after treatment ( P = 0·004), but those with higher pre-treatment CA showed a significant decrease in CA ( P = 0·001). These results suggest that prosthetic restoration for SDAs may benefit objective masticatory performance in patients needing replacement of missing posterior teeth, but the benefit in subjective chewing ability seems to be limited in subjects with perceived impairment in chewing ability before treatment. Aim: The Magnet Recognition Program is a system in the USA that recognizes a hospital as a magnet hospital for having a high retention rate of nurses and providing high quality patient care. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of nurses' work environment with characteristics that are similar to those of magnet hospitals on patient satisfaction in Japan. Methods: The authors distributed anonymous self‐administered questionnaires in August 2011 to all nurses via the directors of the nursing departments of four private hospitals. The response rates were 91% (n = 425) for nurses and 51% (n = 379) for patients. In the questionnaire for nurses, the items addressed basic attributes and a scale of work environment characteristics of a magnet hospital (the Japanese version of the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index [PES‐NWI]). The questionnaire for patients addressed basic attributes, information about their hospitalization, and items to assess patient satisfaction. To examine the effects of the PES‐NWI subscales on patient satisfaction, the authors conducted multivariate logistic regression analysis for groups, which were dichotomized by 75 percentile of the scores of patient satisfaction. Results: The result of model 1 in the multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that collegial nurse–physician relations showed significant relationships with low patient satisfaction (odds ratio = 0.144, P < 0.05), while the significance was diminished in model 2, in which dummy variables of hospitals were entered into the equation. Conclusion: These findings suggested that a favorable work environment for nurses, which is similar to that of magnet hospitals, may influence patient satisfaction in hospitals in Japan. Background: In Japan, the number of dementia patients admitted to hospitals and other care facilities has been increasing and their hospital stays prolonged. Until now, there has been no study examining the differences between patients in psychiatric hospitals and other care facilities. Here we attempt a comparative analysis of characteristics of dementia patients in psychiatric hospitals and other types of facilities based on a nationwide survey. Method: A nationwide, cross‐sectional survey was conducted in 2009–2011. Questionnaires were sent to randomly selected facilities and asked about each facility's status as of September 2009 and about individuals with dementia residing in each facility during the 2008 fiscal year. The portion about individuals consisted of items to assess eligibility for the Long‐Term Care Insurance programme. Based on data from 6121 patients residing in seven different types of facilities, features of dementia patients in psychiatric hospitals and differences among facilities were analyzed. Results: There was a significant difference in average age, activities of daily living level, and dementia severity level among the seven types of facilities. The average age in all types of facilities, except for psychiatric hospitals, was higher than the national average life expectancy of 82.59 years. The results of the study revealed that in psychiatric hospitals the proportion of men, those aged <75 years, demented patients with severe behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, and those with frontotemporal dementia was significantly greater than in other types of facilities. In other Long‐Term Care Insurance care facilities, dementia patients >80 years and women accounted for 80% of all patients. Conclusion: Result showed that dementia patients in psychiatric hospitals had a higher proportion of men, younger age groups, and severe dementia than other types of facilities. These features contrast markedly with status of dementia patients in other Long‐Term Care Insurance care facilities. In order to facilitate dementia patients' early discharge from psychiatric hospitals to other care facilities or to home, further fulfilment care services corresponding to severe dementia and early‐onset dementia may be needed. Background and Objective Various studies have reported the relationship between alcohol consumption and gingival condition. However, they focus on the direct effects of alcohol consumption or alcohol sensitivity on gingival condition, and it is unclear how oral health behaviors relate these relationships. The aims of this study were to assess the inter-relationships between gingival condition, tooth-brushing behavior after drinking alcohol and alcohol sensitivity in university students who drink more than once per week on average. Material and Methods A total of 808 students (541 males, 267 females) that habitually consume alcohol were analyzed. The disease activity of gingival condition was assessed as the percentage of bleeding on probing (% BOP). Additional information regarding alcohol sensitivity and oral health behaviors, including tooth-brushing behavior after drinking, were also collected. Results Thirteen percent of the current participants reported neglecting tooth-brushing after drinking, and their alcohol consumption was higher than those who did not neglect tooth-brushing. Logistic regression analysis showed that high % BOP (% BOP ≥ 20) was associated with male ( OR = 1.53; 95% CI, 1.01-2.33), neglect of tooth-brushing after drinking ( OR = 2.60; 95% CI, 1.20-5.61) and debris index ( OR = 8.38; 95% CI, 4.24-16.60) in participants with low alcohol sensitivity. In participants with high alcohol sensitivity, high % BOP was associated with debris index ( OR = 7.60; 95% CI, 3.12-18.51), but not with any oral health behaviors. Conclusions The study revealed that alcohol consumption was indirectly related to gingival disease activity through the neglect of tooth-brushing after drinking alcohol in university students with low alcohol sensitivity. ABSTRACT A guideline for urinary incontinence care among older adults in Japan has recommended that the care should be based on types and causes of urinary incontinence. This study examined nursing ward managers' perceptions regarding compliance of urinary continence care among nursing staff, for residents on short-stay respite services (SSRS) at health care facilities in Japan, and to examine the relationship between the compliance and residents' levels of activities of daily living upon discharge. We sent questionnaires to nursing managers at all facilities in the Kanto and Shinetsu regions in Japan (1072 facilities). The questionnaires asked about SSRS, compliance of urinary continence care for residents on the respite services and the residents' levels of activities of daily living upon discharge. A logistic regression analysis was performed with overall improvement of activities of daily living among the residents as a dependent variable and the factors that could be related to the activity levels and compliance of the care as independent variables. The final sample comprised 313 participants (response rate: 29·2%). Among the managers, 64·6% reported urinary incontinence types in the residents identified at their facilities, and 69·4% disagreed in response to a question on whether the activities of daily living levels of the residents had improved upon discharge. Logistic regression analysis showed that identifying urinary incontinence types (odds ratio 3·38, 95% confidence interval 1·71-6·69) was associated with improvement of activity levels for the residents. Aim To examine the associations between the pre-pregnancy body mass index ( BMI) and gestational weight gain ( GWG) with pregnancy outcomes in Japanese women. Methods The medical records of 1883 Japanese women who delivered singleton infants from January 2010 to January 2013 at Osaka- Minami Medical Center were retrospectively reviewed. We use the BMI classification which the World Health Organization defined for Asian populations and the GWG classified based on the current 2009 Institute of Medicine ( IOM) recommendations. The odds ratio ( OR) of each of the groups for the different pregnancy outcomes were compared to the recommended group using a logistic regression analysis adjusted by age, gestational weeks, parity, weight gain, mode of delivery, pregnancy induced hypertension ( PIH) and gestational diabetes mellitus. Results Women who were obese ( BMI, ≥25 kg/m2) and overweight ( BMI, 23-24.9 kg/m2) had a higher rate of developing PIH (adjusted OR, 6.68 and 3.21 [95% confidence interval [ CI], 3.31-13.3 and 1.29-7.24]). In contrast, GWG exhibited a correlation with the weight of the infant. The inadequate GWG group had a higher rate of small-for-gestational age ( SGA) infants (adjusted OR, 1.72 [95% CI, 1.22-2.46]). The rate of emergency cesarean section was not significantly different between the groups. Conclusion A pre-pregnancy BMI less than 23 kg/m2 is desirable to prevent Japanese women from developing PIH. GWG within the IOM recommendations also reduced the risk of PIH and SGA. Objective To evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic and radiographic screening for gastric cancer. Design A retrospective cohort study. Setting Community in an isolated island. Participants The study involved 186 patients (131 men, 55 women) diagnosed with gastric cancer between 2000 and 2005. Interventions Endoscopic and radiographic screening. Main outcome measurements The odds ratio of death from gastric cancer in participants versus non-participants of screening, the cumulative survival rate of the gastric cancer patients. Results The odds ratio of death from gastric cancer in the participants versus non-participants of screening was 0.091 (95% confidence interval ( CI) 0.027-0.308; P < 0.0001). The cumulative survival rate of the gastric cancer patients in the screening group was higher than that in the non-screening group ( P < 0.0001). In the endoscopic screening district, the odds ratio of death from gastric cancer among the participants versus non-participants of endoscopic screening was 0.117 (95% CI 0.013-1.056; P = 0.0525), while in the radiographic screening district, it was 0.086 (95% CI 0.020-0.376; P < 0.0001). The cumulative survival rates were higher in both the screening groups as compared with the non-screening group (endoscopy, P = 0.0302; radiography, P = 0.0012). In Japan, where older people already make up more than 23% of the population and the proportion is still growing, the burden on those caring for people with dementia is an increasing problem. This burden is magnified by wandering behavior, a peripheral symptom. Thus, there is a need for an objective measure of wandering behavior to determine what constitutes effective care. In this study, we translated the Algase Wandering Scale - Version 2 into Japanese, and examined its reliability and validity. Ambulatory residents with dementia were selected from two nursing homes and two wards specializing in dementia care in hospitals in Japan. Nurses and care workers taking care of these residents answered questionnaires regarding the residents. From the results, the Algase Wandering Scale - Version 2, Japanese version, was examined for inter-rater reliability, stability, internal consistency, and concurrent validity. The results of the analysis in the present study demonstrated that the Algase Wandering Scale - Version 2, Japanese version, has reliability and validity, and that it can measure the presence or absence of wandering and its severity. Aim: Sarcopenia-related falls and fractures are becoming an emerging problem as a result of rapid aging worldwide. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia by estimating the muscle mass of the arms and legs of patients with and without hip fracture. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined 357 patients immediately after a hip fracture (the HF group) and in 2511 patients from an outpatient clinic who did not have a hip fracture (the NF group) at single institution in Japan. We carried out whole-body dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to analyze body composition with skeletal muscle mass index (SMI; lean mass / height2) and bone mineral density (BMD). We carried out stepwise logistic regression analysis to determine the factors associated with a hip fracture. Results: Lower appendicular SMI ( P < 0.001), leg SMI ( P < 0.001), and higher prevalence of sarcopenia ( P < 0.001) were observed in the HF group after controlling for age and sex. The arm SMI was similar in both groups ( P > 0.95). In multivariate analysis, the presence of sarcopenia, older age and lower BMD were associated with the occurrence of a hip fracture (OR 1.476, P = 0.002; OR 1.103, P < 0.001; OR 0.082, P < 0.001; respectively). Conclusion: This study showed a higher prevalence of sarcopenia and more reduced leg muscle mass in patients after a hip fracture than in the outclinic patients who did not have hip fractures. Aim: To demonstrate the difference between risk factors for gestational hypertension (GH) and preeclampsia (PE). Material and Methods: Using data from women with no essential hypertension and with singleton births between 2001 and 2005 delivering after 22 weeks of gestation at 125 centers in Japan (Japan Perinatal Registry Network) ( n = 241 292), we compared risk factors for GH and PE. Odds ratios were calculated using multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: Of 241 292 women, 2808 (1.2%) developed GH and 6423 (2.7%) developed PE. Thirty-five years or older, primiparity, diabetes mellitus, and renal disease increased the risk of both hypertensive conditions. Forty years or older was a risk factor only for GH, while primiparity, female baby, and renal disease were risk factors only for PE. Early-onset was a common risk factor for small-for-gestational-age (SGA) in GH and PE, but in late-onset only PE was a risk factor for SGA. The main population of SGA infants was composed of PE cases because PE accounted for 83.3% of early-onset type before 32 weeks. Girl preponderance in the PE women was observed (sex ratio: boys/girls = 0.904), while slight boy preponderance was seen in normotensive women (1.06) and GH (1.02). Conclusion: Preeclampsia is associated with lower fetal sex ratio (girl preponderance) compared to GH or normotensive. Presence of hypertension is a risk factor for SGA in early-onset GH and PE, and hypertension and proteinuria are risk factors for SGA in late-onset group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The detection of the early stages in amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is considered important in diagnosing progression to Alzheimer's disease. The current study sought to investigate differences in cognitive function between control subjects with no memory loss (control), and subjects in the early stage of aMCI (EMCI) and late stage of aMCI (LMCI). Methods: A total of 100 community-dwelling older adults aged 65 years and over were recruited from 1543 potential subjects. Subjects were classified into three groups based on the degree of objective memory impairment; control ( n = 29), EMCI ( n = 34) and LMCI ( n = 37). Multiple neuropsychological tests were carried out to examine cognitive function. Results: The EMCI individuals showed lower cognitive function relative to controls; not only in logical memory, but also in letter fluency ( P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in neuropsychological scores between the EMCI and LMCI groups, except for category fluency and logical memory. In addition, the EMCI subjects' logical memory score showed a significant relationship with letter fluency, category fluency and digit span backward test performance ( P < 0.05). Aim To determine whether periodontitis and three prominent members of the periodontal flora are associated with the development of preeclampsia (hypertension plus proteinuria) Materials and Methods The samples were composed of 127 systemically healthy women. Within 5 days after labour, clinical periodontal parameters and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia in subgingival plaque were evaluated. Maternal serum IgG antibody specific for each bacteria was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to control for confounders (maternal age, body mass index before pregnancy, parity, and smoking). Results Eighteen women were affected with preeclampsia. The number of A.actinomycetemcomitans was shown to be significantly associated with preeclampsia in the logistic regression model (odds ratio; 1.7, 95% confidence interval; 1.1-2.7). There were statistically significant differences between the preeclamptic and control groups in body mass index before pregnancy, pre-term birth and low birthweight (respectively, p = 0.014, p = 0.010 and p < 0.0001). We found no statistically significant association between preeclampsia and periodontal clinical parameters or the presence of periodontitis. Conclusion In systemically healthy pregnant women, our findings suggested that the levels of maternal subgingival A. actinomycetemcomitans DNA were elevated in preeclamptic women. Summary The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether self-assessed masticatory ability (masticatory ability) is significantly related to muscle strength of the body evaluated as handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass of the whole body (kg) (SMM) after adjusting for confounding variables, including, age, gender, height, weight, employment status, type of household, educational background, social interaction, chronic medical conditions, smoking habit, drinking habits and dentition status among the elderly. A total of 381 persons aged 67-74 years were enrolled. Masticatory ability was classified into one of three categories: ability to chew all kinds of food, ability to chew only slightly hard food or ability to chew only soft or pureed food. Handgrip strength was measured, and bioimpedance analysis was used to estimate SMM. One-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni methods were used to examine differences in handgrip strength and SMM among the three groups of masticatory ability. An ordinal regression model was conducted with masticatory ability as the dependent variable and handgrip strength as the principal independent variable. Handgrip strength was significantly lower in those individuals who could chew only soft or pureed food than in those individuals who could chew all kinds of food. No significant difference in SMM was found among the three groups of masticatory ability. Masticatory ability was significantly related to handgrip strength after adjusting for SMM, dentition status and background factors. The aims of this study were to examine the incidence of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) over a 3-year period and to evaluate the risk of self-reported TMDs among university students in Japan. The study population comprised 2374 university students examined at the start of their undergraduate course and 492 students re-examined after 3 years using questionnaires on symptoms of TMD and experiences of jaw injury, stress, orthodontic treatment and parafunctional habits. Cumulative incidence (%) and relative risks were calculated overall. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to determine the degree of risks of these variables for symptoms of TMDs using logistic regression. Results of logistic regression analysis showed that male subjects with experience of jaw injury had a 3·54 (CI = 1·45-8·68, P < 0·01)-fold higher risk of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain than that for those who did not. Female subjects who reported experiencing stress and bruxism had 10·56 (CI = 1·28-87·54, P < 0·05)- and 5·00 (CI = 1·21-20·71, P < 0·05)-fold higher risks of TMJ sound, respectively, than the risk for female subjects who had not experienced stress or bruxism. The results indicated that experiences of jaw injury, stress and bruxism were significantly associated with increased risks of development of TMJ disorders in a 3-year cohort. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assessment of the quality of care is a key element in current diabetes care. However, the quality of care for diabetes patients in Japan has rarely been reported. To assess the quality of diabetes care in two communities in Japan by using National Health Insurance claims data. We analysed claim data of 13 650 beneficiaries of National Health Insurance in two communities in Japan from May 2006 to April 2007. Diabetes cases were identified by using a case detection algorism. Our main outcome measures were three process quality indicators: (1) haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) testing; (2) annual eye examination; and (3) annual nephropathy screening, recommended in the existing clinical guidelines. We calculated the performance rate of each quality indicator and examined the effects of demographic characteristics and co-morbid conditions. We identified 636 diabetes cases. Of these, 97.0% had at least one HbA1c test, and 69.8% had ≥4 tests during the study period. The odds ratios (ORs) for ≥4 HbA1c tests were lower in subgroups aged 75-79 (OR 0.58, 95% confidence interval 0.35-0.96), and aged ≥80 (OR 0.54, 95% confidence interval 0.32-0.88) compared with the subgroup aged <70 after adjusting for other patient characteristics. The annual rate for eye examinations and nephropathy screenings were 20.8% and 5.8% respectively. We found high performance rates for HbA1c testing, while the annual rates for eye examinations and nephropathy screenings were suboptimal. Using administrative data would facilitate more comprehensive assessment of the quality of care in Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
