This paper analyses the potential impacts of a hypothetical implementation of the Income Stabilisation Tool (IST) in France for the field crops sector. The IST is a risk management tool available within the 2014–2020 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to support farmers facing a severe drop in their incomes. This analysis was conducted using a farm‐level model relying on expected utility theory and based on positive mathematical programming with risk. The model was applied to a sample of 1375 field crop farms in France derived from Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data. Simulation results show that the uptake rate of the tool is relatively low, less than 37% in all scenarios. It is strongly dependent on CAP public support and on how much premium farmers have to pay. Highest uptake rates are observed in farms specialising in Other Field Crops, such as potatoes, pulses and sugar beet, and farms located in regions highly exposed to climatic risks. Previous experience with insurance favours the acceptance of the IST. Model results also show that the IST improves adopters' income and reduces income inequality. In this paper, we provide a spatial analysis of agriculture in three mid-sized French cities, with a particular focus on professional farms. The existence of important agricultural spaces inside the cities is confirmed. We reveal the persistence of a field-based, market-oriented agriculture in French mid-sized cities, often ignored in studies on urban agriculture, and usually made invisible. Our results highlight the farms' diversity, as well as a diversity of farmers' viewpoints on the relations between urban and agricultural places. We emphasise the importance of three main determinants in the observed dynamics: the cities' geographies; the impact on farmers of land speculation and urbanisation; and the implementation of resistance and adaptation processes by some farmers. Significant decline of biodiversity in farmlands has been reported for several decades. To limit the negative impact of agriculture, many agro‐environmental schemes have been implemented, but their effectiveness remains controversial. In this context, the study of economic drivers is helpful to understand the role played by farming on biodiversity. The present paper analyzes the impact of risk aversion on farmland biodiversity. Here “risk aversion” means a cautious behavior of farmers facing uncertainty. We develop a bio‐economic model that articulates bird community dynamics and representative farmers selecting land uses within an uncertain macro‐economic context. It is specialized and calibrated at a regional scale for France through national databases. The influence of risk aversion is assessed on ecological, agricultural, and economic outputs through projections at the 2050 horizon. A high enough risk aversion appears sufficient to both manage economic risk and promote ecological performance. This occurs through a diversification mechanism on regional land uses. However, economic calibration leads to a weak risk‐aversion parameter, which is consistent with the current decline of farmland birds. Spatial disparities however suggest that public incentives could be necessary to reinforce the diversification and bio‐economic effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A significant number of people are moving ‘back-to-the-land’ in search of a fulfilling lifestyle and self-defined economic success. But do these ‘neo-farmers’‘find their bliss’? Experiences are mixed. While some report feeling isolated, others tell stories of rapid integration into local agricultural and social networks. Although the literature is clear that networks play a critical role in providing newcomers to rural areas with support, few studies have addressed the specific experiences of beginning farmers and none has compared the networks of ‘neo-farmers’ with those of farmers from farming origins.
