- Abstract
This paper provides an overview of Spanish amateur theatre in São Paulo between 1930 and 1970, drawing primarily on information contained in the files produced by theatre censors, which were in operation in Brazil during that period. This allows for an understanding of the kind of theatre brought from Spain to Brazil and, in turn, sheds light on how the Brazilian authorities understood Spanish theatre. Despite the largely conventional nature of the plays performed, there are testimonies that point to these amateur groups contributing to a left-wing theatre in São Paulo's working-class theatre scene. 10. What is an Intellectual? The Spanish Debate during the First World War.

This paper explores the problematic definition of the term intelectual in Spain in the early twentieth century, as shown by the polemic that surrounded attitudes to the First World War. Despite Spain's official neutrality throughout the conflict, its citizens became extremely interested in the European struggle. The country's leading intellectual figures fostered a taking of sides that pitted aliadófilos against germanófilos in a discursive war of their own. But the manifestos published by each of the two sides in 1915 show that, beyond the discussion over which countries should win the war, this polemic contained an important debate over the very definition of the term intelectual. Each side produced its own idea of what was meant by this term, with the end goal of de-legitimizing the other side's claims. This shows us the unstable nature of the term intelectual and the figure it referred to; an instability scholars of twentieth-century Spanish intellectual history need to pay attention to. Rather than this being something particular to Spain, the paper argues that this type of polemic was intrinsic to the appearance of the intellectual as a public figure in early twentieth-century Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ayala L. and Jurado A. Pro-poor economic growth, inequality and fiscal policy: the case of Spanish regions, Regional Studies. This paper aims to discuss whether substantive differences exist in terms of the distribution of economic growth by income groups in Spanish regions. In order to do so, data from the Spanish Family Budget Surveys for various years are used to estimate growth incidence curves, decomposition models of poverty changes, and isopoverty curves. The results show that while economic growth in the long-term has meant an improvement of the lower income percentiles in Spain, this improvement is not uniform in the different regions. Limited possibilities for poverty reduction in the lower-income regions are also found. Rodríguez-Fuentes C. J. and Padrón-Marrero D. Industry effects of monetary policy in Spain, Regional Studies. The aim of this paper is to analyse the presence of sectoral asymmetries in monetary policy transmission in Spain in the period before the introduction of the single monetary policy in Europe (1988-98). Monetary policy shocks are identified through both a standard vector auto-regression model (VAR-shock) and the specification of a reaction function (RF-shock) for the monetary authority in Spain. The responses of the different industrial branches with regard to the estimated monetary shocks are then analysed at national accounting sector and subsector levels. The results confirm the presence of significant differences in the sectoral responses with respect to national monetary shocks in Spain... [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Minondo A. Exports' productivity and growth across Spanish regions, Regional Studies. According to recent studies, countries specialized in goods associated with high productivity levels grow faster than countries specialized in goods associated with low productivity levels. This paper analyses whether that relationship also takes place at the regional level. Using a unique, highly disaggregated, regional trade database, the productivity level associated with Spanish provinces' exports is calculated and whether provinces that latch on more productive exports have achieved higher rates of growth is analysed. The results show that there is also a positive link between exports' productivity and growth at a regional level. [image omitted] Minondo A. CULTURAL identity ,ESTABLISHED churches ,MATERIAL culture - Abstract
This article builds on the developing interest in the growth in number and influence of the Spanish community at Rome through the course of the sixteenth century: this research has so far focused particularly on the role of the national churches. My article will now deepen and broaden this research through enhancing our understanding of the significant role of a unified Spanish cultural identity, as expressed through works of material culture, in establishing their position and status within a complex web of transcultural relationships at Rome. Through the course of the sixteenth century, a Spanish cultural presence at Rome manifested itself in both permanent constructions such as churches and chapels and also ephemera such as festivities. While, in turn, works that were commissioned from Roman artists are still found scattered through the Iberian Peninsula. These phenomena all shed light on the nuances of the ambivalent relationship that existed between Spain and Rome in these years, as Rome was both a part of wider Spanish imperium and yet not so. MOTHERS ,FATHERS ,EMPLOYMENT ,ECONOMIC structure ,WORKING hours - Abstract
Time scarcity is a reality for most mothers and fathers of young children who work full-time. Though the Spanish law recognizes a specific right to a reduced schedule for care reasons, fathers very rarely make use of this policy. Many of them simply think that, in their current employment circumstances, they ‘can’t’ cut down on work hours. This analysis focuses on the subjective perception that employees have of their difficulty to reduce work hours. Using a nationally representative sample of Spanish employees in charge of young children, and drawing on intersectionality perspectives, we propose that several stratification systems (e.g. gender and economic structure) overlap framing the subjective experience of how easy or difficult it is to adopt a reduced schedule. We confirm that fathers in middle-level service occupations (e.g. clerical workers) may be those most likely to be ‘undoing gender’ at work, as they differ significantly from other fathers in their perception that for them it would be easier to reduce their work hours. Spain's plummeting fertility since the late twentieth century may seem to reflect a waning desire for children. Nevertheless, reproductive disappointments resulting from gender inequalities cause many Spanish women to postpone motherhood and experience age-related fertility problems. For them, creating a family often becomes possible only through the reproductive labor of other women. Our analysis of transnational adoption, egg donation, and surrogacy in Spain shows how anonymity and altruism play out in these three strategies, with implications for the valuation of women's reproductive work and relationships among reproductive providers, intermediaries, recipients, and the resulting children. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
