mHealth applications (apps) are tools that can enhance research by efficiently collecting and storing large amounts of data. However, data collection alone does not lead to change. Innovation and practice change occur through utilisation of evidence. The volume of data collected raises questions regarding utilisation of data by nurses and midwives, and how data from mHealth apps can be used to improve person-centred practice. There is limited empirical evidence and a lack of direction from global health authorities to guide nurses and midwives in this area. To describe strategies for nurses and midwives that could enhance the effective use of data generated by mHealth apps to inform person-centred practice. The purpose of this paper is to stimulate reflection and generate actions for data utilisation when using mHealth apps in nursing research and practice. This discussion paper has been informed by current evidence, the integrated-Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (i-PARIHS) framework, and research experience as part of doctoral study. Before engaging in data collection using mHealth apps, nurses and midwives would benefit from considering the nature of the evidence collected, available technological infrastructure, and staff skill levels. When collecting data and interpreting results, use of a team approach supported by engaged leadership and external facilitation is invaluable. This provides support to operate apps, and more importantly use the data collected to inform person-centred practice. This paper addresses the limited available evidence to guide nurses and midwives when using mHealth apps to collect and use data to inform practice change. It highlights the need for appropriate technology, external facilitative support, engaged leadership, and a team approach to collect meaningful evidence using mHealth apps. With the advancement of mobile technology, mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has significant potential regarding its practical applications and benefits in foreign language learning. Nevertheless, little research was conducted to examine factors regarding the facilitation of oral communication through MALL based on established theories or models. The purpose of this review is to investigate the main constituents conducive to the intended outcomes based on an adapted model from Beatty (2010) and further provide guidelines for enthusiastic stakeholders in the field. Twenty-eight empirical studies were collected and categorized according to four key variables of the design model and analyzed qualitatively, with the key findings identified as follows. Due to the technical affordance of mobile technology, it is found that a student-centered self-regulated learning context is created, where students construct knowledge through self-instruction, self-evaluation, and self-correction. Furthermore, a speaking strategy-driven collaborative-based learning design enhances students' oral proficiency through strong social connections, interactions, and communication. Finally, given the pedagogical design and practices, high-level cognitive thinking is thereby promoted, with promising affective learning outcomes. Background: Paper patching, a method that places cigarette paper over the most mobile quadrants of the tympanic membrane, is one of the treatment options for patulous eustachian tube (PET). Aims/Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare the outcomes of two different treatment strategies for PET. Material and methods: Twenty-three patients underwent paper patching of the tympanic membrane and 16 patients were treated with nasal saline irrigation with or without ipratropium bromide nasal spray. Medical records were reviewed for resolution of PET symptoms as categorical variables (complete remission, partial remission, or no improvement) with a minimum follow-up of 3 months. Results: Immediately after undergoing paper patching, 20 of the 23 patients (87.0%) reported complete remission (CR). The percentage of CR after paper patching was 82.6% at 1 month and 65.2% at 3 months. A greater percentage of patients reported CR of aural symptoms in the paper patching group than in the nasal irrigation group at both 1 and 3 months after treatment (p < .05). Conclusions and significance: Repetitive paper patching resolves aural discomfort in most PET patients for at least 3 months and can be considered as a first-line treatment option for PET in the outpatient setting. The benefits of outdoor education are well known and irreplaceable. Teachers of environmental lessons frequently ask themselves what kind of cartographic support (paper maps or mobile navigators) to offer their students doing fieldwork either navigating to selected points or being engaged in the research of a selected environment. In this article, we compare the success rates of children using either a paper map or mobile navigation with respect to independence, accuracy and speed when walking (wayfinding) through an unfamiliar environment. We collected the data by observing 122 primary school students of six different schools as they individually walked through a suburban area of Ljubljana, Slovenia. The results show that the children were more independent and made fewer mistakes when using a mobile navigator than when using a paper map. They were able to use mobile navigation successfully after having received only a short (2-minute-long) demonstration, even if they had never used such a device before. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to empirically investigate preservice teachers' learning experiences during a series of geometry-themed choreography and dance activities. These pedagogical tasks were designed to examine the challenges and solutions that participants experienced when exercising their spatial reasoning abilities, particularly during the transition between the choreography designs they had generated on a Lego-based grid worksheet and real-world dancing positions. The data collection for this study took place at an elementary school located within a bilingual metropolitan area along the southwestern United States border. The overall findings indicated that all of the participating preservice teachers' dance teams encountered interrelated challenges, most of which were variations on disorientation, primarily due to transitioning between representations of space and the deprivation of the typically employed spatial navigation reference points that are used in normal activities. This study compares cost, completion times, and percent completion of electronic tablet (n = 244) to paper-based (n = 398) questionnaires administered to participants of scenic raft trips on the Snake River, Grand Teton National Park. We hypothesized e-tablet questionnaires would (1) cost less (2) be completed faster and (3) be completely filled more frequently than paper-based questionnaires. Our survey resulted in a greater per unit cost of e-tablet compared to paper-based questionnaires ($4.17 and $1.80, respectively). Although e-tablets were completed faster (230 [±66] s) than paper questionnaires (235 [±57] s), the difference was not significant (t(641) = 1.97, p = 0.39). E-tablets were filled completely more frequently than paper questionnaires (80% vs. 51%, respectively; χ2 = 3.84, p < 0.01). We suggest that for multi-year projects with a sample size target of ≥100, and length ≥ 5 pages, e-tablets are more cost effective and efficient than paper-based surveys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using digital data collection devices in the field is now commonplace among many faculty and students. However, there is less attention to how the use of GPS units, tablets and devices transforms or alters our understanding of the field itself. Does the embrace of the digital simply replace paper, or does it fundamentally transform our ways of knowing? What do we gain and what do we lose as we move from paper to digital in the acts of doing fieldwork? What are the limits of technology in the field and after the field? In this paper, I wrestle with these questions through my own fieldwork experiences through two story-telling narratives. In the first, I discuss the process of documenting pastoralists' cattle movement through GPS units, while in the second I relay the process of using tourists as volunteer citizen scientists for wildlife monitoring efforts. Through these examples, I demonstrate a number of key lessons for fieldwork with digital devices and call for a more thorough understanding of the dialectics between devices and users. This paper analyses the quality of information collected by a self-administered survey responded to by a general population, who were offered the possibility of answering using the post or Internet. The analysis will be focused on the use of three grid questions with using rating scales with 6, 6 and 8 items, respectively. There was a polar point labelled scale (0–10) with verbal labels only at the endpoints. This paper is a retrospective look at the last ten years of development in online third-party arrangements within the Australian higher education sector. A total of 42 higher education providers are reviewed. The analysis initially focuses on the state of online third-party arrangements in Australian higher education. It then investigates the current scale of partnership arrangements these universities have with third-party companies that offer education technology platforms to deliver online courses. The analysis indicates that online third-party arrangements are likely to grow in post COVID-19 context. However, despite the scale of the activities, this paper reveals that better data collection and reporting are needed to inform third-party education delivery at the national level. For the estimation of global karst carbon sink, a few conventional methods usually require the parameters that are difficult to measure, resulting in the big cost. Moreover, under the constraints of incomplete and timeliness issues in the collection of data over a large region, it has remained a challenge for these methods to study global karst carbon sink. Therefore, this paper proposes estimating the global karst carbon sink, and analyzing the suitability of the response surface methodology and the fluctuating variation of karst carbon sink in global karst regions from 1951 to 2050. This paper shows that the proposed method can reduce the time of numerical calculation and is suitable for application in global weathering models; The global karst carbon sink in the future changes not only displays an upward trend but also exposures its fluctuating trend largely. The present field study compared pretest and posttest face validity perceptions, predictive validity perceptions, and fairness perceptions regarding a paper-and-pencil version and a computerized version of an in-basket exercise. Furthermore, the nature of these reactions and their relationship with test performance were examined. Data were collected among 205 applicants. Contrary to our expectations, minimal differences were found between applicant reactions to the computerized version and the paper-and-pencil version of the in-basket exercise. Results from structural equation modeling showed that applicants' general beliefs in tests affected pretest reactions. Applicants' test performance influenced posttest reactions via self-assessed test performance. Theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses workflows involved with contributing print journal back runs to scanning and storage efforts. The purpose of these efforts was to alleviate space problems in a library by consolidating stacks that were formerly used to house runs of bound journals. This article contributes to the literature on serials withdrawal projects by demonstrating database designs for tracking contributions made to cooperative storage facilities as well as highlighting an innovative solution for tracking the required linear feet for housing bound print collections. Reference departments track patron interactions to illustrate the type and number of services provided as well as to tailor librarians’ time and expertise to the interest and needs of their patrons. Until 2010 the Reference, Education, and Community Engagement Department at the Calder Memorial Library tracked statistics using a complicated system of paper tic sheets and two Excel™ spreadsheets. After considering different electronic systems, the department decided to employ an electronic form created with SurveyMonkey™ to track patron interactions. After the system had been in place for three months, the authors administered a satisfaction and use survey to collect faculty and staff feedback on the new system. Seven months later the authors undertook usability testing to collect further evaluative data on the electronic form. The patron interaction form continues to be used to collect statistics, provide data for annual reviews, and recognize the contributions of all faculty and staff at the library. The paper aims at examining the global trends in digital library research based on data extracted from the Scopus database at the global, national, institutional and individual levels. Using performance indicators like total citations, the number of publications, h-index, total link strength the study aims to evaluate the prolific authors, organizations, countries, chronological growth of literature, document forms, most prolific journals, application of Lotkas's law to evaluate the author productivity and analysis of keywords to know the trending topics of research in Digital Libraries. The study uses VOSviewer to prepare the network map of organizational and country co-authorship analysis with clustering technique and MS-Excel for graphical and statistical analysis. The core findings are like the most productive year is 2019 and the number of publications increased rapidly from the starting year of data collection 2016. The results reveal that the USA is the most productive country in terms of the number of publications and impact with the University of Illinois the first rank in the list of prolific institutions. There are great interests of designing research metrics and indices to measure the research impacts in research institutes. Unfortunately, most of those indices ignore critical design issues, e.g. the disparity between domains, the impact of journals or conferences in which papers are published, normalising the range of the index values to certain intervals, and the scalability of using the index to rank different research entities. In this paper, a new normalised fuzzy index, (NFindex), is proposed as a fuzzy-based research impact metric. The proposed index is a scalable index whose values are normalised to the percentage levels. NFindex achieves both inter-discipline normalisation and intra-discipline consistency. The capability of NFindex to achieve the inter-discipline normalisation enables fair comparison between different research domains regardless their nature in terms of influence and contribution to other research areas, e.g. natural science. Therefore, NFindex gives a universal normalised single-number metric that can be used by research institutes to solve the problem of inter-discipline scholar ranking. Moreover, it can help universal ranking of universities and research institutes according to their research capabilities and impacts. Reviewing is the most important step in the quality accreditation of scientific works, requires the professional expertise of the reviewer as well as there is no conflict of interest in the evaluation process. However, we also acknowledge that reviewers have limited knowledge, experience and opinions about the work of others, so they may misinterpret the author's point of view, leading to the rejection of excellent scientific work or a potentially successful project proposal. Manually selecting reviewers can lead to bias and time-consuming. To solve these problems, we have developed a support system for selecting a group of reviewers to evaluate a particular problem, such as a proposal or a research paper. Our support system consists of three main modules: data collection, reviewer identification and group prediction of reviewers. The Data Collection module collects data from a variety of sources to create the scientist profile database. The reviewer identification module recognizes reviewers on a specific topic. The reviewer prediction module provides a group of exp reviewers to evaluate a submitted paper or a proposal. Experiments on the DBLP computer science bibliography dataset showed that our system achieves better results in terms of accuracy in comparison to other methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The development of a set of questions is a central element of examination development, with the validity of an examination resting to a large extent on the quality of the questions that it comprises. This paper reports on the methods and findings of a project that explores how educational examination question writers engage in the practice of question setting. Although the practice of examination question writing is ubiquitous, limited research has been carried out on how writers actually draft individual examination questions when writing complete examination papers. Purpose: The main aim of this study was to understand more deeply the process of examination question writing. Sample: The study involved 12 experienced educational examination question writers. Design and methods: The first data collection phase involved observing writers whilst they wrote the first draft of a question paper (using a 'think aloud' process). Following the observation, the writers took part in an hour-long interview. This led to the construction of a model of question writing. Phase 2 of the data collection process involved validating the proposed question writing model with six additional question writers by means of telephone interviews. Analysis and findings: A model was developed that outlined the key stages of writing that all of the writers moved through in the completion of their question writing task. The question writing model situates the process of writing individual questions in relation to the broader cognitive tasks required in writing a complete paper. It also situates the writing process within the social dimensions of question writing. Conclusions: Iteration in the writing process appears to have an important function. These iterations represent a form of decision-making that is common to the examination question writing culture and appears to be logical and rule bound. Whilst the recognition of iterative behaviour reveals a highly personalised element of question writing, it also reveals a common expectation that the ideas across a subject area are highly inter-related, and that an examination paper should reflect this. Finishing determines the final dimension and geometric accuracy of parts, and the finishing process directly affects the stiffness and residual stress redistribution of the workpiece, so the optimisation of the finishing process plays a very important role in deformation control. At present, existing data-driven methods for deformation control need a large amount of labelled training data, which is always a challenge in the manufacturing area, especially for machining deformation. To address the above issues, this paper presents a meta-reinforcement learning model incorporated by simulation and real data, which is trained in a simulation environment with a piecewise sampling strategy for data collection, and can be updated in a real machining environment through a very small number of real monitoring data. The finishing process optimisation for deformation control can be realised using the proposed approach. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified both in simulation environment and actual machining, and better results are obtained compared with other existing methods. This paper aims to show how changes in survey design, supervision, and data collector affect travel survey data. The results can be used by policymakers and travel behaviour researchers when evaluating or choosing survey design. A document study of public documentation of national travel survey (NTS) methodology, and research using NTS data material from six European countries were conducted to compare the survey design of their respective NTSs. The results show that all countries included in this analysis have some sort of quality challenges. However, the countries have handled them differently, at different stages, and the transparency of the data collection process varies. Transparency in the data collection process and processing of data is essential for improving the survey design, evaluating quality, and ensuring that the time series is intact. While there are numerous performance metrics that have been developed for the evaluation of distracted driving prevention programs, there is little information on how to select them depending on the requirements and/or objectives of the study. This paper describes a systematic literature review that was conducted on the metrics for evaluating distracted driving countermeasures in order to bridge this research gap. A summary of the evaluation metrics used for the existing distracted driving countermeasures was provided. Guidance for choosing an evaluation measure was provided by analyzing the metrics from the perspectives of functionality, spatial-temporal dimension, and equity. Three examples of distracted driving countermeasure evaluation processes were thoroughly reviewed in order to offer insight into metric selection and measurement. This paper contributes to the body of knowledge by discussing the implications for policy on how to enhance the thoroughness and accuracy of the evaluation of distracted driving countermeasures. Analysis from multiple angles, the development of data collection tools and direct behavior indicators, taking into account temporal dimensions, and equity considerations, are proposed. This paper aims to critique approaches to qualitative coding that carry a bottom-up or inductive thinking. Despite the wide contributions of this epistemology to the social sciences, this paper contends that contemporary research and methodological debates have inadequately explored different epistemologies for coding. As such, this paper proposes and explores the concept of 'reverse coding.' In applying reverse coding to ethnographic data collected from observations of a multicultural language classroom, I demonstrate that reverse coding can explore intuitions or 'hunches' generated from the data that may not be supported by conventional qualitative coding. By finding such support through reverse coding, or the process of identifying preliminary propositions first and its constituent features afterward, this paper asserts that research employing multiple approaches to coding can extend its range of analysis to generate more robust findings. This study conducts a systematic review of salesperson sampling within the pages of the Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management from 2013 to 2022. A total of 284 papers (all inclusive) were identified in the first step of the review. Next articles were qualified based on article types, methodology (research approach), and respondent type before additional analysis was conducted. This resulted in 109 published manuscripts with 147 unique salesperson samples for further review. Specifically, sample scope and participant profiles were examined based on the 109 articles. The sample scope included response metrics, study deployment, and contextual aspects. Participant profile includes the examination of demographics, experience, work details, and performance. Ensuing the systematic review, managerial importance and implications, best practices, and research insights and future research directions are provided. This includes guidance on the sampling frame overview, data collection, and sample contexts of participants for a better understanding of what information should be included in research studies. In turn, this study puts forth evidence that one type of salesperson sample does not fit all sales research, and the generalizability of the sample should be carefully considered. The prevalence of impaired foot function and floating toes of 91 baseball players with disabled throwing shoulder or elbow were retrospectively investigated. Foot function was evaluated by foot "rock paper scissors" and floating toes were confirmed if none of the toes made contact with the mat in standing posture. The prevalence of impaired foot function and floating toes and the relationship between between them were determined. Abnormal foot function was observed in 83 players (91%); of those, 73 players (88%) also had floating toes, and the prevalence was statistically significant compared to those without it (12%) (P < 0.001). Floating toes were observed in 74 players (81%); of those, 73 players (99%) had impaired foot function, and the prevalence was also statistically significant compared to those without them (59%) (P < 0.001). The data collection process, particularly in the medical field, often introduces measurement errors. These errors can have an impact on the outcomes and parameter estimates of the model. In the case of classification scenarios, the presence of measurement errors also affects the inherent cumulative and summary measures of the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. Despite being a crucial aspect of the ROC curve, only a limited number of researchers have explored the issue of measurement errors when estimating the partial area under their respective ROC curves (pAUC) within a univariate framework. This paper focuses on estimating the partial area under the multivariate ROC curve while considering the presence of measurement errors. A bias-corrected estimator is proposed and through simulations and real datasets, it is observed that using the proposed bias-corrected estimator it is possible to quantify the deviation from true accuracy. It is also observed that the proposed bias-corrected estimator has lesser Bias and minimum MSE when compared to the estimated area values. Summary: In this paper, discussions were focused on the influence of measurement errors that affect the performance of the MROC curve. When the data possesses measurement errors, the full and partial AUC's will be biased downwards. To address this, bias-corrected estimators are derived and shown to work with simulated and real datasets, even if measurement errors are present in the data, without any loss of information to determine the true AUC's as well partial AUC's. To mimic the existence of measurement error, the error covariance matrices were added to the original dataset and the measures of the MROC, bias-corrected estimators (Δ ˜ & Δ ˜ p) were computed. In each instance, the results were similar. The bias of the corrected estimator Δ ˜ ( Δ ˜ p) was much smaller than the bias of Δ ̂ ( Δ ̂ p) , and thus, the bias in estimating Δ was reduced without inflating the mean squared error. Therefore, by using the bias-corrected estimators, it is possible to quantify the deviation of the true accuracy. Much psychological research depends on participants' diligence in filling out materials such as surveys. However, not all participants are motivated to respond attentively, which leads to unintended issues with data quality, known as careless responding. Our question is: how do different modes of data collection—paper/pencil, computer/web-based, and smartphone—affect participants' diligence vs. "careless responding" tendencies and, thus, data quality? Results from prior studies suggest that different data collection modes produce a comparable prevalence of careless responding tendencies. However, as technology develops and data are collected with increasingly diversified populations, this question needs to be readdressed and taken further. The present research examined the effect of survey mode on careless responding in a repeated-measures design with data from three different samples. First, in a sample of working adults from China, we found that participants were slightly more careless when completing computer/web-based survey materials than in paper/pencil mode. Next, in a German student sample, participants were slightly more careless when completing the paper/pencil mode compared to the smartphone mode. Finally, in a sample of Chinese-speaking students, we found no difference between modes. Overall, in a meta-analysis of the findings, we found minimal difference between modes across cultures. Understanding how to make the world a better place requires interdisciplinary knowledge. Public policy analysis helps policymakers arrive at informed policy decisions. The policy analysis process involves public problem definition and data collection, stakeholder identification, a rationale for government involvement, evaluation criteria, identification and analysis of policy alternatives, and a recommendation. Economics informs not only the identification of market failures but also how we think about public problems, evaluate relevant research, identify policy alternatives, weigh objective criteria (costs, benefits, equity), and select optimal solutions. Students of policy analysis gain experience through in-class examples of contemporary topics and an iterative policy paper, where each student selects a public problem, conducts research, and writes an analysis. Organizational commitment gets significant attention from both scientists and practitioners alike since the 1950s. This interest is evident in the literature in the area of management and organizational behaviour, in an impressive number of studies exploring the nature, antecedents, and outcomes of organizational commitment. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the clarification of the relationship between employees' demographic characteristics and their organizational commitment, since research studies imply mainly inconsistent results about this relationship. The empirical research was carried out in Croatia. The research sample includes 304 employees. A self-developed questionnaire was used for data collection, specifically about gender, age, tenure, education, and marital status. In order to assess organizational commitment, the Organizational Commitment Scale was applied. Research results showed no differences in organizational commitment regarding the employees' gender or marital status, while the differences in employees' organizational commitment exist regarding employees' age, tenure in organization and education. Dwelling into these differences, this paper demonstrates that the level of organizational commitment varies according to different subcategories of each demographic characteristic. Having the ability to reproduce empirical results is foundational to the scientific process. Increasingly, there is an emphasis within the research community to create workflows which are not only reproducible but also replicable in that analytical approaches can be applied to new data. However, a disproportionate number of technical solutions designed to foster reproducibility and replicability have focused on data analysis, particularly within geography. This paper argues for greater attention on a phase of the research process which precedes analysis and is often taken for granted – that of data acquisition. Through code examples using the R Project for Statistical Computing, this paper demonstrates a path toward replicable spatial data acquisition for both secondary and primary data acquisition, with a focus on crowdsourced geographic information. The modular approach demonstrated is flexible in that it allows for straightforward replication but also enables extension to new spatial questions. PhD graduates often face significant hurdles when shifting from academic research to industry positions. Challenges can arise from a disconnect between the skill sets developed in university and those prized in industry settings. To address this issue, this study examines the crucial competences necessary for PhD graduates to make a successful transition from academia to industry. Grounded in Competency-Based Theory (CBT), the research involved qualitative data collection through semi-structured interviews with 26 participants from the Australian Postgraduate Research Intern program. The paper proposes the PCAP framework as an innovative tool for managing PhD internships. It delineates four interactive clusters of competences: PhD competences (P), Contextual competences (C), Adaptation competences (A), and Project Management competences (P). In recent years, the psychological impact associated with 'being a police officer' has been brought into sharp focus. However, little has been reported on absences due to psychological illness, specifically in functions more frequently exposed to Potentially Traumatic Events (PTEs). This paper presents data collected from 23 territorial Forces in England and Wales covering 2019–2023 on 'Frontline' and 'Response' officer absence(s) attributed to psychological illness(es). The findings show overall rates of increase in the mean (40%), minimum (450%), and maximum (46%) rates of officer absence owing to psychological illnesses – at least double that of sickness absences. This paper also reports on Occupational Health Referrals (OHR) with one Force reporting a 247% rate of increase in referrals for 'Response' officers due to psychological illness. This paper's purpose is to systematically analyse and understand the complexity of strategic-level stakeholder management within defence. Empirical data was collected via a rigorous systematic literature review of 10,369 manuscripts contained within the Web of Science, with 206 A1 studies constituting the final paper set. This was followed by bibliometric and maturity analysis leading to extraction, synthesis and integration of insights. In doing so, knowledge on defence stakeholders is consolidated beyond the traditional field of political science. The results illuminate aspects of stakeholder network complexity, including stakeholders that need to be better understood and holistic frameworks important for contextualising initiatives. Further, the need to move beyond bilaterally-focussed relationships towards the consideration of the larger ecosystem is emphasized. Finally, managers are encouraged to internalise engagement capabilities, able to continuously balance diverse stakeholder cultures and interests. One of the major impacts of hearing disability that hinders the individual's effective participation in society and full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms is his/her ability to communicate with others. Sign language is one of the main methods of communication used by people with hearing disability. Therefore, improving access to sign language services and increasing the availability of interpreters contribute to better inclusion and integration of people with hearing disability into society. This paper explores the experience of a Jordanian university that launched a pioneering initiative by offering a sign language course for its students. It reports the findings of a study that evaluated this initiative from the perspective of students. Feedback was recorded during unstructured interviews with 23 student participants who had taken the course. The paper concludes that universities can play a significant role in integrating people with disabilities into the education system and promoting their participation in society. Innovative methods for remote data collection, developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, also carry value for extending the reach of future research. Using the case study of an evaluation of children's learning from Sesame Street, this methodological paper discusses challenges of assessing preschool children's hands-on problem solving remotely via video chat, as well as techniques that were used to overcome these challenges, to yield rich, reliable data. These techniques pertained to every phase of the research: materials and preparatiory work prior to data collection, procedural and technical considerations during sessions (including enlisting assistance from the children's parents), managing children's behavior, preventing parents from influencing their children's responses, and considerations during data analysis. Although remote methods should not replace in-person research in all cases, they hold the potential for increasing the geographic and demographic diversity of samples, thus producing more representative and generalizable data. In this editorial, we introduce the 17 papers that make up this special issue of Environmental Education Research on new materialisms and environmental education, and discuss themes of significance arising from this collection. The papers are grouped in the special issue under the following headings: (1) pedagogical/research orientations; (2) critiques; (3) dark endings?; and (4) concepts mattering; but as we show here and in our introduction to the collection, they can also be connected in multiple ways to any other and a range of other relevant topics. As with our Introduction to the collection, we trust this commentary provokes and inspires, if not energises and materialises the furthering of axiological pathways away from dominant onto-epistemologies of environmental education research. Smart manufacturing that involves tight integration of the physical system and cyber system is a hot topic in both industry and academia in the era of the Internet and big data. However, the dynamic and uncertain manufacturing environment introduces a significant adaptive issue of production scheduling, which is one of the pivotal tasks for smart manufacturing. This paper focuses on this problem and proposes a closed-loop adaptive scheduling solution based on the Cyber-Physical Production System (CPPS) with four phases: production data acquisition (PDA), dynamic disturbance identification (DDI), scheduling strategy adjustment (SSA), and schedule scheme generation (SSG). In the DDI phase, in view of the disturbance classification, a disturbance identification procedure based on CPPS monitoring is studied to ensure real-time response. In the SSA phase, an industrial big-data-driven scheduling strategy adjustment method is proposed, which consists of GA-based offline knowledge learning and KNN-based online adjustment, to enhance the system adaptability. We apply and verify the proposed adaptive scheduling solution on an experimental semiconductor manufacturing system, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the dynamic scheduling method in terms of multiple objectives under different disturbance levels. This paper explores school principals' and teachers' views of the Italian teachers' appraisal system and related indicators. In particular, the research aimed at examining the opinions of school principals and teachers regarding the domains to be considered for teacher appraisal purposes. An investigation involving 37 school principals and 868 in service teachers, from three Italian regions, is presented. The data was collected through a questionnaire and statistically analysed. Findings suggest operationalising new data sources - specifically students and parent, - is beneficial to evaluate teacher quality as a construct in data-based professional learning communities. They show different positioning: teachers seem to be really inclined to be evaluated, especially by students and parents, while school principals still seem very cautious in entrusting the teachers' appraisal to an external point of view. This paper adds to the existing research showing the perspective of a new teachers' appraisal, inspired by multi-faceted models based on multiple points of view (students, parents, not only principals) and not reduced to simplistic solutions of an accounting type. Furthermore, the study answers the call for research into teachers' appraisal as part of the professional learning actions and in view of more integrated professional leadership. Highway-rail grade crossing (HRGC) safety is one of the priority areas in the United States transportation system that requires for greater research efforts not just limited to crash analysis, but also to gain a deeper understanding of surrogate safety measures such as driver behavior-based traffic violations at HRGCs. This paper uses vehicle profile data to identify the key variables and develop prediction models for gate violations and examine the relationship between model accuracy and the key input variables. A data set of 256 vehicle-train events was collected at two HRGC testbeds in Lincoln, Nebraska. Among them, 76 events are gate violations, and 180 events are non-violations. Two tree-based ensemble techniques, the bootstrap forest and the boosted tree, were applied to the data set. It was found that once a vehicle is within 190 feet from the HRGC stop line, the model was approximately 80 percent accurate in predicting a gate violation. It was also found that as vehicles came closer to the HRGC, the prediction error decreased. With the advent of vehicle profile data collection, tree-based ensemble techniques are ideal for safety studies as they can utilize the highly non-linear vehicle profiles and relate these to safety surrogate metrics. Ireland's schooling population has significantly diversified in the last 15 years. Despite the growing body of research on migrant and minority ethnic students' experiences, we still know relatively little about their relationships with peers and teachers. This paper draws on data collected as part of a wider study, informed by critical race theory (CRT), about the higher education (HE) experiences of minoritised ethnic students, involving interviews with 25 students across seven HE institutions in Ireland. 11 had attended school in Ireland, and this paper examines their schooling experiences including their 1) identity battles in not being recognised as Irish, 2) experiences of racist bullying and inadequate responses of teachers, and 3) construction as 'deficient' learners, including regarding HE progression. From a CRT perspective, the findings are examined in the context of exclusionary constructions of Irishness, and the urgent need for anti-racist education in Ireland for students and teachers. The growing process of metropolization has revealed its flip side in the last decade in the form of increasing social problems in peripheral regions. Through a comparative study of two structurally similar small cities in the Czech peripheral region, this paper explains different population trajectories as well as diverging competitive and foundational economies. Based on the original data collected during extensive fieldwork in the Moravian-Silesian Region, the paper uncovers a dualistic relationship between different types of human agency and its structural context as the key determinant, explaining the different developments. The agency of public providers (in contrast to private providers) in the foundational economy has buffered the impact of peripheralization on the well-being of residents, while the agency of companies in the competitive economy has had a major impact on path development and demographic change. This paper explores the impacts of globalisation on small and informal businesses in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean economy has over the last two decades been dependent on small and informal businesses after the country went through a shattering economic crisis that witnessed the collapse of its once flourishing industry. In the wake of this failing formal economy, small informal businesses emerged as a strong alternative economy that has created employment and livelihoods for most of the urban populace. However, in a world that is increasingly contracting and fast becoming one, globalisation has had its impact on these businesses. This paper uses data collected in Norton and Harare through in-depth interviews and ethnographic observations as well as secondary sources to explore and understand the finer details of how the phenomenon has affected small informal businesses in Zimbabwe both positively and negatively over time. The transition from 'Mode 1' to 'Mode 2' knowledge-production has created an explicit focus on research impact which is reflected in the funding and organisation of research, the relationships between research and users, and the focus of research studies. It has also led to efforts to understand pathways to impact, although these studies have so far had little to say specifically about crime-related research. This paper comprises an effort to address this gap and explore variations in research-user relationships within research into policing and crime prevention. An ESRC-funded project researching the crime consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, of which we were team members, faced several challenges in terms of data access, data collection and the need to deliver strong academic research outputs, as well as maintaining a clear focus on real world research impacts. This led to a co-productive relationship between the researchers and a range of external partners. There is a dearth of literature theorising the nature of such researcher-user relationships, despite some rich accounts of individual experiences. This paper uses examples drawn from the writings of those who have been involved in research impacts (or who have been thwarted in their attempts), to set alongside the project on which we have been working. From this we present a typology of researcher-user relationships, that we hope will further theoretical discussion in the field and might usefully be applied more broadly to other areas of criminological interest. This paper seeks to advance the understanding of the complementarity between action learning and lean. Today, this is an underexplored research area, despite the high degree of similarities and syngeneic possibilities between these two research streams. The paper describes an action learning intervention at VELUX, a Danish rooftop manufacturer designed to develop its leaders as lean learning facilitators to cope with the increasing velocity of change stemming from growth, sustainability, and digitalisation agendas. The paper locates the complementary between action learning and lean in the extant literature and presents an account of practice from VELUX for extrapolating five promoting factors for developing leaders as lean learning facilitators. The paper concludes that lean complements action learning with a suite of concepts, systems, practices, and methods for institutionalising ongoing action learning and concepts on how to think and act as a leader to foster a lean learning system consisting of empowered and proficient problem-solvers. Furthermore, action learning complements lean with the underlying learning mechanisms of facilitating and sustaining the change towards instituting leaders as lean learning facilitators and adopting a lean learning system. Driven by a culture of 'data fundamentalism', datafication is being increasingly introduced in health services, sometimes with little transparency and patient engagement. This paper will be drawing on research from the UK in order to critically reflect on the wider impact of health digitalization and issues of digital rights and data justice, which are sometimes overlooked in this field. The case from the UK deals with the effects of datafication in community health services—and more broadly welfare services—within the field of mental health. People with experience of mental-health service using digital health services are in fact made visible, represented and treated differently as a result of their digital activities and records. Theoretically the paper will frame these issues and case studies within the available literature on Digital Sovereignty. The question of digital sovereignty is understood by the authors as central to deal with issues of independence, control and autonomy over the digital self. It raises Issues of transparency and accountability on several levels, from the Government's purchasing of digital tools, to potential impact on health worker and algorithmicized decision making process. Data collection in resource-constrained environments, particularly in the Global South, is challenging for a variety of philosophical, theoretical, methodological, and ethical reasons. Challenges may involve using research approaches designed in the Global North that are not appropriate when using data from the social and cultural contexts in the Global South. Adopting a reflective approach, this paper examines research projects in Bangladesh, Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Rwanda and highlights the challenges encountered on these projects. Along with the problems, attempted ameliorations are discussed, and insights are offered on how the authors overcame these challenges. The paper posits that these challenges can be mitigated by adopting contextualist methodology resulting in theories that are based on local social and cultural processes. The paper proposes that a critical realist-philosophical approach and methodology are appropriate because of contextual specificity and the innate ability to alleviate problems associated with the Global North methodology and generalisable theory. The escalation of Russia's eight-year war against Ukraine in February 2022 did not produce the outcomes that Russian political elites anticipated. This paper uses almost a decade of public opinion data collected by the Ukrainian agency Info Sapiens and a recent survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology to analyze changes in attitudes that can help explain the responses of citizens. We explore how key events have produced rallying effects and changes in behavior. Further, we explore the implications for postwar reconstruction efforts. This paper is a systematic literature review on slow journalism, whose aim is to analyse and understand all previously done research on the subject. The review focused on four databases—Web of Science Core Collection, SCOPUS, B-ON and Communication Abstracts—and, after applying the protocol and the analysis model, a corpus of 37 papers was obtained. Data collection ended on 31 January 2022 and no starting date was defined. This analysis shows that, although the concept designation is somewhat recent it is deeply rooted in journalism, it places itself between tradition and innovation. Among other considerations, one should stress the strengthening of the connection with the audience and the idea of being an alternative way of doing, recognising, still, the need for other processes and temporalities. Chronic low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide. A clinical model for its cause is lacking. Defining a cause based clinical model and a framework of understanding back pain in terms of peripheral structural and central functional pain is essential for optimal management. We describe the results of the largest published audit of 41 chronic low back pain patients, receiving outpatient sublingual ketamine therapy for defined central functional pain along with conventional peripheral structural pain management. Our clinical model assigns Movement Dysfunction as the primary cause for low back pain symptoms and restores it with Movement Therapy focused rehabilitation which is also defined. Patients were derived from a tertiary single neurosurgical specialist practice in Brisbane Australia over a three year period. Severe pain and disability measurements more than halved and only 13% of patients ceased ketamine prematurely due to predominantly non-sinister side effects common to all pharmaceutical therapies. All other surveyed metrics of utility were highly favourable in this challenging cohort of chronic back pain patients biased to poor outcomes. Outpatient ketamine maintains high efficacy and safety used in conjunction with a unique clinical model that describes chronic low back pain. This paper builds on our previous publications that describe the disease of movement dysfunction as an integral factor to the development of a cause based clinical model for the condition of chronic low back pain symptoms. Our clinical application of this model, applying the necessary dual approach of controlling symptoms arising from peripheral structural pain and central functional pain in conjunction with elimination of root causation has shown favourable outcomes in patients with high levels of pain and disability based on their tertiary referral origin and high Oswestry Disability Scores. Removing chronic low back pain from its position as one of the world's leading causes of pain and disability is more likely if the rehabilitation industry can replicate and test treatment algorithms based around established clinical models of disease which is the important subject of this paper.
