Germany has an ambitious global health strategy, yet its universities provide few opportunities for global child health researchers. Improved understanding of the reasons and the academic role of global child health is needed. The objective of this study is to offer insights into Germany's academic global child health landscape by describing the actors and their priorities in research and education and by analysing perceived barriers and opportunities. We used a sequential exploratory mixed-method design. Participants were selected purposively to represent German global child health academics. Information was gathered first from a 33-item online survey and from interviews conducted four to six months post-survey. Surveys were analysed descriptively. A joint thematic approach using content analysis was used to analyse interview transcripts. Four categories emerged: training and professional orientation; professional realities; representation and advocacy, and barriers. Of the 20 survey participants (median [IQR] age 55 years [17], five female), seven agreed to be interviewed. Research experiences abroad shaped individuals' career choices in global child health. They engaged in global child health education, primary health care and access to health services, frequently in clinical and humanitarian settings, but spent little time on global child health-related activities. Participants were active and valued in international networks and keen to extend their activities. Yet they felt under-represented academically and reported multiple structural and individual barriers in Germany. They perceived a lack of leadership positions, career paths, funding opportunities, and institutional and project support which limits academic advancement. Germany's global child health experts are motivated to engage with global child health-related topics but face difficulties in advancing academically. Academic actors may need to intensify research and training efforts in order to expand global child health's scientific base in Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the beginning of their migration, Turkish migrants (TMs) have formed numerous civic organizations of diverse types in Germany. Various studies have examined the social, economic, and political situation of Turkish migrants in Germany over the past fifteen years. A gap persists concerning the role of Turkish migrants' umbrella organizations (TMUOs) as antiracist organizations and representatives of the Turkish migrant community. While they establish relations with German political parties, trade unions, and municipal authorities, it is unclear whether such interactions are motivated by TMUOs' interest in promoting tolerance toward the diversity of Turkish migrants in Germany. Combining approaches from organizational sociology and migration research, this article aims to generate an empirically founded knowledge of TMUOs and how they have reacted to various German policies of acculturation. It is specifically concerned with: (1) the aims and activities of TMUOs; (2) the role and function of these organizations as representatives of the Turkish population; (3) the methods and strategies that TMUOs use to influence the German policy and public in order to eliminate racism toward Turkish migrants; and (4) the possibilities available to them to promote antiracism in Germany. The article shows that many organizations were established because of social, economic, and political discrimination against TMs in Germany. It shows that TMUOs are involved in activities to support TM integration into the German society as well as in defensive moves to protect them from discrimination. My main argument is that TMUOs' efforts to support the integration of TMs into the German society have generally been ignored. These organizations are excluded in many cases from negotiations with the government and thus have limited impact on the growth of Turkish minority rights in Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Germany, until the late 1990s, minority self-organizations were rarely active in wider interorganizational antiracist activities and were not seen as part of this field. Antiracist organizing more generally has rarely been researched in Germany. Building on new secondary historical literature and recent theoretical integration between organizational and social movement research, I investigate how this pattern of minority participation came about in the wider German antiracism movement and in a specific case study of national-level organizing in a regularly meeting "network" group between 1997 and 2005. My research shows parallel processes of "oligarchization" (Michels 1925) on these two levels of antiracist organizing. I claim that the domination of white antiracist organizations in the German antiracist field is not only a result of migrant organizations' difficulties in fighting for more rights and resources in the light of a state and society that has not seen their political activism as legitimate. It is also a product of the competition against other organizations that wanted to represent the voice of antiracism. Others active in the antiracism field have had an ambivalent position in creating and supporting but also in blocking openings for minority organizations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article looks at the state of education in Germany, focusing on the Institut fur Bildungsforschung in der Max-Planck-Gessellshaft. It examines the public concern over the dangers inherent in the state of German education. The article considers one of the basic factors of German educational policy to which the present state of emergency is to be ascribed. It explores the constitutional principle of cultural federalism within the Federal Republic which coupled as it is with a high degree of central control by the Lander and local authorities. The article also considers the relationship between research, planning and policy. A comparative study on the strategy of educational reform is presented.

The article offers information on the restriction of applied science in Germany. On April 28, 1946, the Allied Control Council approved a legislation providing for a continuing and rigid control of scientific research in this country. The study of applied nuclear physics is one of the subjects disallowed to all and any Germans. Also outlawed are research in applied aerodynamics, rocket propulsion, gas turbine engines, and the remote control of aircraft. The law encompasses all universities and colleges, technical high schools, and Kaiser Wilhelm institutes.
