The Great Knot is a species from the Scolopacidae family of waders migrating within the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, and studies on this species have contributed greatly to understanding of migration ecophysiology and migration strategies in long-distance migrants. In this paper, we provide the first description of biometric variability and sexual size dimorphism in Great Knots. During the study on the Kamchatka Peninsula, 683 adults and 229 juveniles were measured and sexed molecularly. In adults, the mean measurements of females were larger than in males, except for tarsus length. In juveniles, at the early stage of migration from breeding to wintering grounds, apparently growth was not complete. Sexual dimorphism was small, with only wing length being significantly longer in females than in males. All dimensions of juveniles were smaller than those of adults, especially in bill length. The most sexually dimorphic trait in both adults and juveniles was wing length, and the most effective discriminant function with wing length as a single predictor correctly identified the sex of 76% of birds in both age classes. The Belgian Superior Health Council (SHC) preferentially recommended the 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20) for adults aged ≥65 years, immunocompromised patients, and patients aged ≥50 years suffering from conditions that increase their risk for pneumococcal infections. The objective of this paper is to present the cost-utility of PCV20 compared to no vaccination and the alternative sequence of PCV15 followed by the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) in this population. The analysis employed a static Markov model capturing lifetime risk of pneumococcal infections, associated disutility, mortality, and costs from different healthcare payer perspectives. Results indicated use of PCV20 among Belgian older and at-risk adults is highly cost-effective compared to no vaccination, with an incremental cost per quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) of €4,164. Compared to the sequential regimen (PCV15+PPV23), PCV20 vaccination is a cost-saving strategy. Subgroup analysis indicated PCV20 vaccination of at-risk adults aged 65–84 years would also be cost-saving from the national healthcare perspective. Based on current knowledge, this analysis suggests that access to PCV20 should be proposed in all adults recommended for vaccination by the SHC as PCV20 prevents additional hospitalizations and deaths caused by pneumococcal infection at an affordable cost. Pneumococcal infections cause a high burden on infected patients and society. Vaccination of patients at risk of severe infection has been recommended for decades, but uptake of pneumococcal vaccines in adults has historically been low in Belgium, where patients have borne the vaccine costs and the recommended vaccination schedule required the sequential administration of two vaccines. A single PCV20 dose is recommended as the preferred vaccine for adults at risk due to age or other factors in Belgium as it is expected to provide lasting protection against more types of disease-causing pneumococcal bacteria as well as being simpler to administer than alternatives requiring multiple injections. Uptake is expected to improve with the recent reimbursement of the new PCV20 vaccine, though reimbursement covers only a portion of the recommended population. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the PCV20 cost-effectiveness in all adults at increased risk of severe pneumococcal disease, including immunocompromised adults younger than 65 years. Our analysis captures and compares the lifetime risk of pneumococcal disease and associated healthcare costs in an unvaccinated cohort, a cohort vaccinated with the alternative recommendation of PCV15 and PPV23 vaccines and a cohort vaccinated with PCV20. This cost-effectiveness analysis indicates that use of PCV20 will help decrease the number of pneumococcal disease cases, hospitalizations, and premature deaths at an affordable healthcare cost: PCV20 is a cost-effective option compared to no vaccination and a cost-saving option compared to the sequential regimen PCV15 followed by PPV23 in the Belgian adult population recommended for pneumococcal vaccination. A UPJO is a blockage of the ureter that affects urine flow. UPJO is mainly treated by an open approach, however, in recent years minimally invasive techniques are taking place. These techniques include robotic and laparoscopic pyeloplasty. Some patients require a redo after a primary intervention. A systematic review was conducted through the examinations of the efficacy and safety of a robotic redo pyeloplasty in adult patients from previous literature reviews. A literature search was made through PubMed. A selection process was done based on our eligibility criteria. The data were represented numerically, listed on tables and analyzed cumulatively using Microsoft Excel. Twenty studies were included in this review, of which nine were studies on robotic outcomes () (157 patients), 10 on laparoscopic (210 patients), and one review by Zhang et al., focused on both types of surgeries. Two papers (24 patients) from the robotic studies and one paper (21 patients) from the laparoscopic studies were excluded from the intra and post-operative characteristics because not enough data were available and were only included for the success and complication rates. The success rate for the robotic studies was 88.5% while the laparoscopic studies had a success rate of 91%. However, the robotic studies had a complication rate of (11.8%) while the laparoscopic studies had a complication rate of (15.9%). Conversion surgery was required in one patient undergoing laparoscopic surgery. The minimally invasive methods are becoming more viable in adult patients with rUPJO, considering its effectiveness and fast recovery. This can lead to a new era of robotic assisted surgeries to becoming the gold standard. As an interface between health and education, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) offers a potent tool among other interventions to accelerate healthy transition of adolescents into adulthood. With increasing interest in in-school CSE provision/delivery, young people in out-of-school contexts may be left behind. This study forms part of implementation research to understand if the activities used to train and support the facilitators are feasible, appropriate, acceptable, and effective in enabling them to engage a defined group of young people, deliver CSE to them in the out-of-school context, and assist them in obtaining relevant services. This paper presents findings of mapping of out-of-school CSE interventions in Ghana, ongoing or completed between 2015 and 2020, and then discusses a needs assessment of two purposively selected groups of vulnerable out-of-school youth: young people living with HIV and AIDS (YPLHIV) and those living in detention (YPiD). We conducted 10 interviews with YPLHIV and three focus group discussions with YPiD in November 2020. Qualitative data were analysed thematically using both deductive and inductive approaches. The mapping yielded 29 interventions (18/62% were ongoing) focused extensively on the delivery of CSE-related knowledge and information; none were aimed at building facilitators' capacity and most targeted the northern regions. Among YPLHIV, living positively after diagnosis, disclosure skills and use of HIV/AIDS health services were critical. YpID sought clarification on personal hygiene, consent in sexual relationships, medium/channel to deliver CSE, and issues around same-sex sexual intercourse. The need for support for good mental health is enormous. General support for good mental health is needed for 100% of the population, and at all stages of life, from early childhood to end of life. Focused support is needed for the 17.6% of adults who have a mental disorder at any time, including those who also have a mental health problem amongst the 30% who report having a long-term condition of some kind. All sectors of society and all parts of the NHS need to play their part. Primary care cannot do this on its own. This paper describes how primary care practitioners can help stimulate such a grand alliance for health, by operating at four different levels – as individual practitioners, as organisations, as geographic clusters of organisations and as policy-makers. Is the identifiable victim effect (IVE; helping a single identified victim more than a statistical victim) stronger for child victims than adult victims? In this paper, we test the effect of identifying a victim and whether that victim is a child or adult on helping motivation and donation behaviors. In three studies (N = 1508) with different samples from different countries, we find no main effect of identifiability on any of our measures, and no support that the IVE mainly occurs for children. However, we find an age effect; child victims receive more help (studies 1a-1b) or evoke a greater motivation to help (study 2) than adult victims. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we applied an integrative taxonomy approach to describe a new tardigrade species from Madagascar. The description is based on morphological and morphometric data (using both light and scanning electron microscopy), combined with genetic data (nuclear sequences, i.e., 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA and mitochondrial COI sequences). Based on egg chorion morphology the new species is most similar to: Mac. hannae, Mac. joannae, Mac. kamilae, Mac. madegassus, Mac. modestus, Mac. paulinae and Mac. polypiformis, but differs from them in several morphological and morphometrical characters of eggs and adults (e.g. absence of eyes, different oral cavity armature, size of cuticular pores, absence of dentated lunules under claws, size of eggs and egg processes, and shape of terminal discs of egg processes). The uncorrected genetic p–distances enabled an independent verification of Macrobiotus porifini sp. nov. as a species new to science. In cases of repeated victimisation, a complainant's statement of abuse, and therefore memory, is often critical evidence for forensic investigations and legal proceedings. It is therefore important to understand the functioning of adults' memory for repeated events. As such, the purpose of this paper was to review the extant literature on adult memory for instances of a repeated event. The results of the review revealed a small number of heterogeneous studies on adult repeated-event memory (N = 12). The literature so far shows that while adults might have difficulty in recalling information specific to instances (narrow accuracy), they are capable of remembering information across multiple instances (broad accuracy). It was also found that several factors may impact recall of instances including age, the number of experienced instances, rehearsing an event, repeated retrieval and event distinctiveness. Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) seeks to improve young people's knowledge, attitudes and practices in relation to sexual and reproductive health, sexual and social relationships, and dignity and rights. In Ethiopia, young people with disabilities and young women involved in sex work are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and poor sexual health, yet face stigma and accessibility challenges that continue to exclude them from information, support and services. Because they are often out of school, these groups are also often excluded from programmes that are largely delivered in school settings. This paper explores the challenges faced by these groups of young people in accessing inclusive and age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health knowledge and services in the Ethiopian context and the implications for delivering CSE. The research included literature review, mapping analysis and interviews with young people from those two groups and with service providers and programme implementers. Our findings indicate that young people with disabilities and young women involved in sex work face myriad barriers to accessing information and services that support positive and healthy sexuality, relationships and rights. However, changes over the past decade to national and regional governance structures and a political environment in which CSE has become increasingly contested have generated siloed approaches to the provision of sexual and reproductive health information and services, and poor linkages to complementary services including violence prevention and social protection. Background: Appropriate supports and instructional practices contribute to the development of self-determination. Also, research shows that the promotion of skills related to self-determination has been linked to the achievement of desired outcomes over the different life stages. Advances in self-determination require the development of assessment instruments because there is a reciprocal relationship between assessment and instruction. The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of the AUTODDIS Scale, along with evidence of its reliability and external validity. Method: A sample of 541 people with intellectual disabilities aged from 11 to 40 was used to validate the scale. Results: The reliability results indicate that the AUTODDIS Scale shows high internal consistency. The total score and subscale scores indicate moderate inter-rater reliability. The scores were also moderately to highly associated with other related measures of self-determination and quality of life (QoL). Advanced control concepts present a teaching challenge, where even at master level students benefit from these concepts being implemented and demonstrated on real hardware, rather than simply modelling the plant, applying control strategy and tuning. This paper describes one of a series of three experiments demonstrating the implementation of different control strategies using adaptive cruise control (ACC) on robot models and real robots. The experiment described here utilises the model predictive control (MPC) strategy implemented in ACC. The algorithm is realised using the graphical programming language (LabVIEW) as the design environment and National Instruments Robotics Starter Kit robot as the target hardware, with the code being deployed on a field programmable gate array (FPGA), included in the robot's architecture. Two robotic vehicles, 'the leader' and 'the follower' are programmed to execute ACC: the velocity of the leader robot and the distance between the robots are augmented into the robot's state-space equation, to design the controller (MPC), which was then tuned for both velocity and distance tracking modes. The experiment offers a novel idea on how to deliver this advanced control strategy in an applied and visual manner with laboratory experimentation supporting the theoretical aspects of learning. It brings to life some often stated theoretical qualities of an MPC controller, including quick rise time, minor fluctuation and a small distance tracking error, in line with current scientific papers. Thus, it demonstrates to students a clear correlation between theoretical expectations and real-life system performance whilst challenging their ability to work with real hardware. This paper focuses on the production and use of learning resources within an engineering curriculum that support the development of independent learners. The most important contribution is to propose pragmatic learning approaches which improve the student learning experience and reward their engagement. The paper gives evidence that the introduction of new learning resources and approaches need not be labour intensive, expensive or complicated and thus be both cost effective and straightforward to implement, creating a win/win scenario for the staff and students. The species-specific and age-related autumn migration strategies of the sedge, reed and great reed warbler were investigated at stopover sites between central Europe and north-eastern Africa during autumn. Adult reed warblers accumulated larger fat reserves than juveniles and consequently were able to cover longer distances from most stopover sites. Juvenile sedge warblers, on the other hand, left Europe with significantly larger fat reserves than adults as opposed to the populations migrating along the western route. Both juvenile and adult great reed warblers were potentially able to make long flights without refuelling from the northern part of the Mediterranean region onwards. It was the proximity of large ecological barriers that had the most prominent influence on the potential flight distances of adult and juvenile Acrocephalus warblers during their southward migration. In reed and sedge warblers, the differences in mean flight distances covered by adults and juveniles were the largest (ca. 600 km) just before the crossing of the Mediterranean Sea, but smaller (ca. 200 and 400 km, respectively) in front of the Sahara Desert. Juvenile and adult great reed warblers were potentially able to cover 1660 km from Turkey, which was also supported by very low numbers of individuals caught at the Egyptian ringing sites. The results of this study carried out in the key regions of the eastern European–African flyway documented that migration strategies differed between adults and juveniles of three long-distance migrant species, yet this variation depended on the migration stage and the proximity of natural ecological barriers. Background:?Literature draws attention to the relationships between the initial experiences of students as they begin their higher education and how they fare subsequently. In Portugal, the new student’s reception is ritualised by tradition, and involves the organisation of an entire integration ceremony (known aspraxe) proposed by peers. This paper argues that initiation practices in Portuguese higher education can be regarded as a transition ritual, a group of symbolic activities that brand the shift from secondary to tertiary education. Purpose:?This paper aims to analyse students’ observations about initiation practices within this framework. Sample:?Participants were 30 first-year undergraduate students (‘freshmen’) attending a Portuguese university. Design and methods:?Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the students. Qualitative analysis was undertaken. Transcripts were coded according to themes and analysed using a constant comparison approach, to allow for the emergence of categories. Previously the author described how control engineering can be introduced using little mathematics in a first year course, the aim being to make the subject accessible across different degrees. One reaction to this was that it was a good idea, but there was not space to include it in the curriculum where, typically control engineering is not introduced until the second year. This paper describes how the author has used a review of the first year teaching to develop a module in which feedback, control and electronics are integrated coherently. This is beneficial as concepts in control and electronics mutually reinforce each other. This has been achieved during a reduction in the available time for teaching the material. There is limited research in India to understand young people's decision-making processes about intimate relationships before marriage. This paper, adopting a life course perspective, explains relationship choices and diachronic trajectories of relationships from adolescence to young adulthood. Retrospective data were collected from 1240 never married 20–29-year-old men and women living in Pune using a relationships history calendar. All the relationships from 10 years of age onwards were plotted on the calendar, and information on predictor variables was collected through structured questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Sequence analysis approach was used to identify different typologies. Overall, 76% of the participants reported having at least one relationship. More women compared to men (84% vs 70%) ever had a relationship. The median age of starting the first relationship was 17 years for women and 18 for men. Different relationship types were reported, such as "serious", casual, "friends with benefit", and "exploring". The level of emotional involvement, commitment, and physical intimacy significantly differed in different relationship types with significant gender differences. Four typologies of relationships were observed, labelled as (1) Commitment–No sex (N = 187); (2) Commitment–Sex-Some exploration (N = 189); (3) No commitment–Exploration (N = 281), and (4) No relationship (N = 583). Compared to men, women were more likely to follow the trajectory of "Commitment-No sex" (RR 2.13, CI 1.5–3.03). Family environment was significantly related to young people's relationship choices. The findings strongly suggest the need to adopt a developmental perspective towards intimate relationships to understand and address the vulnerabilities of young people across the life course. Utilizing the 'Metropolitan' database, which provides unique longitudinal data on a cohort of 15,000 individuals born in Stockholm in 1953, the paper tests various hypotheses on how conditions in childhood and social upbringing influence sickness absence in adulthood. The hypotheses were derived from different perspectives within the social sciences. The findings suggest that the effects of social background are transmitted via several mechanisms, and that it is useful to see some of the competing hypotheses on social class and health-related phenomena as complementary rather than contradictory. However, the results also suggest that both 'the culture of poverty hypothesis' and the 'biological imprint hypothesis' should be rejected. Because effects of social background are mediated by career variables such as school performance, educational level and current socio-economic status, the results support the 'unfavourable life career hypothesis'. In addition to these effects, an influence of being brought up in a family with serious domestic problems is found. This is congruent with 'the social imprint hypothesis', that childhood conditions may have lasting effects on conditions and behaviours in adult life, irrespective of later exposure. This review systematically examines the literature exploring comprehension of a verbally presented police caution and the suggested factors influencing this, amongst adults within the criminal justice system. An electronic literature search returned 438 titles, with screening leaving 13 articles considered appropriate for the review question. The majority of these were USA studies, with two UK and two Canadian studies. Heterogeneous study methodologies permit only a narrative approach to pooling the data. Findings indicate that a considerable proportion of this population have difficulty fully understanding the caution. Higher IQs and verbal comprehension are positively associated with performance. The studies also indicate that some factors that may appear intuitively related to comprehension, such as prior caution exposure, education, age and mental health, may not be linked to performance. The literature generally used broad inclusion criteria, which increased potential for confounders and reduced opportunity to draw out probable predictors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the relationship between school-based variables (years of schooling, curriculum track, grades, college plans, and extracurricular activities) and the development of political attitudes from adolescence into early adulthood. Longitudinal data on the development of political interest, political alienation, racial equality attitudes, and anti-Vietnam war attitudes are analyzed. Multipole regression techniques are used to trace the development of these attitudes from adolescence into early adulthood and to assess the relative impact of school-based variables on political attitudes. Background: COVID-19 continues to present challenges in the care of older adults with frailty and/or comorbidities and very old patients, who can be hospitalized with severe COVID-19 despite full vaccination. Frailty is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by an increased aging-related vulnerability due to a reduced physiological reserve and function of systemic organs, and is associated with an impairment of activities of daily living. Frail older adults remain at elevated risk of mortality from COVID-19 compared to older adults without frailty, and some pre-existing risk factors such as malnutrition, prolonged bed rest, and the association with comorbidities can aggravate the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Furthermore, the severity of COVID-19 can impact on long-term functioning of older patients surviving from the infection. Persistent symptoms are another emerging problem of the post-vaccination phase of pandemic, as most patients suffer from chronic symptoms which can become debilitating and affect the daily routine. Aim of this review: In this complex relationship, the evaluation of COVID-19 in vulnerable categories is still a matter of high interest and personalized care plans based on a comprehensive geriatric assessment, tailored interventions; specific therapeutic algorithms among older adults are thus recommended in order to improve the outcomes. Newly created systems called hippotherapy simulators (HS) mimic the primitive movements of a live horse. As they are new systems, research examining their usefulness has been well received. The aim of this study is to research the effects of HS on disease activity, quality of life and muscle strength in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). In a prospective, assessor-blinded, block-randomized trial, 48 AS patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either HS or conventional home (CH) exercise therapy. All Participants received 48 sessions, that is 4 sessions a week for 12 consecutive weeks. The primary outcome measures included the quadriceps muscle strength, Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) and Ankylosing Spondylitis Quality of Life Scale (ASQoL). Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in BASDAI, BASFI, BASMI, ASQoL and muscle strength scores compared to the baseline (p < 0.05). BASDAI, BASFI and BASMI scores decreased significantly in the HS group compared to the CH group at week 12 (p=.005, p=.003, p=.045, respectively), but there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of ASQoL and muscle strength scores at week 12 (p=.245, p=.212, respectively). The results of this clinical trial of HS exercises for AS patients indicate a positive effect on disease activity, quality of life and muscle strength. Therefore, horse-riding simulator exercises can be used as an alternative method for the management of individuals with AS. Hippotherapy simulator exercises indicate a positive effect on disease activity, functionality and muscle strength in people with ankylosing spondylitis For people with ankylosing spondylitis, hippotherapy simulator exercises are a safe workout for the spine that uses the core muscles. For people with ankylosing spondylitis, the hippotherapy simulator technique can be recommended as a long-lasting and affordable fitness program in the near future. There is a lack of knowledge in the literature concerning Body Segment Inertial Parameters (BSIP) for children aged 4 to 15 years. Nevertheless, these data are fundamental for studying the dynamics of the healthy and pathological musculoskeletal system. One common method for obtaining BSIP is to use regression equations derived from anthropometric tables. However, the majority of these equations are based on adult data. In this study, we compared certain BSIP (segment mass, center of mass position, and transverse moment of inertia) derived from adult anthropometric tables with the corresponding BSIP extracted from a pediatric anthropometric table. The goal of this study was to determine the accuracy of using adult anthropometric tables to calculate pediatric BSIP. For this comparison, we assessed the proximity of several adult anthropometric tables to a pediatric anthropometric table by Jensen (1986) for each BSIP. Our results revealed differences between the BSIP obtained using adult tables and the BSIP obtained with the pediatric table used as a reference. When considering all the tables, the mean relative difference was 12% for segment mass, 12% for center of mass position, and 25% for transverse moment of inertia. Notably, the greatest relative differences were observed for the head, hand, and foot segments. Additionally, the relative difference in female data was higher compared to males. This result could be attributed to the predominant use of male subjects in the adult tables considered in this study. Finally, the adult anthropometric tables by Dumas and Wojtsuch (2018) and De Leva (1996) provided results that were closer in comparison to Jensen (1986). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite recommendations for influenza and COVID-19 vaccines, studies have documented gaps and disparities in vaccination coverage for adults and adolescents. Understanding the proportion and demographics of those unvaccinated against influenza and/or COVID-19 is important for tailoring appropriate messaging and strategies to increase confidence and uptake. Using the 2021 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), we assessed the prevalence of four vaccination patterns (exclusive influenza vaccination, exclusive COVID-19 vaccination, dual influenza and COVID-19 vaccination, and neither vaccination) by sociodemographic and other characteristics among adults and adolescents 12–17 years. Adjusted multivariable regression analyses were conducted to examine factors associated with each of the four vaccination categories among adults and adolescents. In 2021, 42.5% of adults and 28.3% of adolescents received both influenza and COVID-19 vaccines, while approximately a quarter (22.4%) of adults and a third (34.0%) of adolescents did not receive either vaccine. Among adults and adolescents, 6.0% and 11.4% were exclusively vaccinated against influenza and 29.1% and 26.4% were exclusively vaccinated against COVID-19, respectively. Among adults, exclusive COVID-19 or dual vaccination was more likely to be associated with older age, non-Hispanic multi/other race, and having a college degree compared to their respective counterparts. Exclusive influenza or neither vaccination was more likely to be associated with younger age, having a high school diploma or less, living below the poverty level, and having a previous COVID-19 diagnosis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately two-thirds of adolescents and three-fourths of adults received exclusive influenza or COVID-19 vaccines or both vaccines in 2021. Vaccination patterns differed by sociodemographic and other characteristics. Promoting confidence in vaccines and reducing barriers to access is needed to protect individuals and families from severe health consequences of vaccine-preventable diseases. The Clouded Apollo, Parnassius mnemosyne is a charismatic West Palaearctic butterfly, threatened in some European countries and listed in Appendix IV of the Habitats' Directive. We investigated a large lowland population of the species inhabiting a complex of irregularly coppiced light forest and adjacent wet meadows in the anthropogenic landscape in the valley of the Narew river in NE Poland. A mark-release-recapture (MRR) method was used over 4 years to estimate population size, adult catchability, daily survival and lifespan. The beginning and length of the flight period (which lasted 4-6 weeks) differed over the years and was clearly related to weather conditions (temperature, sunshine) in April, i.e. the most important period for larval development. The seasonal population size varied from 555 to 942 adults. In contrast to some previous studies, the sex ratio turned out to be well balanced, although the catchability of males was significantly higher than that of females in each year. The quality of the wings deteriorated during the season in both sexes, but it was generally better in the case of females, which indicates that they are less active. Inter-seasonal variation in the lifespan (6.36-12.45 days) is more difficult to interpret, but it is worth noting that individuals lived the longest in the coldest and least sunlit flight period. The temporal fragmentation index (i.e. the ratio of flight-period length to adult lifespan) also varied (3.37-5.97) but was generally relatively low, which suggests that there is no threat of reduction of the effective population size at the moment. Nevertheless, the investigated population may be at risk of decline due to the observed intensification of meadow use and especially the possible conversion of grasslands into cornfields. Objective: To describe the frequency and content of contacts with general practitioners (GPs) among youth and young adults by sex, age and time, emphasizing mental health, sexual health and respiratory tract infections. Design: Registry-based population-wide cohort study. Setting: General practice in Norway 2006-2021. Subjects: Norwegian residents aged 13-25 within the study period. Main outcome measures: Contacts with GPs and out-of-hours services, including type of contact, specific procedures and diagnoses. Results: Average number of GP consultations increased over the study period for all age groups. Conversation therapy and time-consuming consultations increased over time, while chlamydia testing and contraceptive guidance decreased among young women. Consultations with mental health diagnoses increased substantially over the study period for all age groups. Use of GP and out-of-hours services increased with age, with a peak at the end of upper secondary school. Youth more often met their own regular GP when consulting for mental health diagnoses than for respiratory tract infections. Conclusion: This study confirmed the continuing trend of increasing use of general practice services among youth, with an increase in conversation therapy and consultations with mental health diagnoses. Procedures related to sexual health became less common. Youth usually meet their regular GP for consultations, in particular those whose diagnosis indicates the highest need of continuity. Purpose: A significant portion of autistic adults experience mental health challenges. Currently, the literature is incomplete when it comes to understanding the needs and preferences of autistic adults who receive therapy. This study elicited the perspectives of autistic adults, focusing on the facilitators, barriers and ways to enhance psychotherapy based on receiving this care for mental health problems. Methods: Using the qualitative, exploratory approach of the Enhanced Critical Incident Technique, eight autistic adults took part in interviews. Results: A total of 147 critical incidents were extracted from participant interviews and categories salient to therapeutic practice. The study identified key factors influencing therapy, such as trust and respect, practical approaches, client factors, structure of sessions, knowledge about autism, support for individualized needs, access to mental health services, and involvement of family/advocate. These factors were categorized into eight main areas relevant to therapeutic practice. Conclusions: Findings from this research reveal that psychotherapy with autistic adults is analogous to performing this work with non-autistic adults, in the sense that this work too entails elements of individually tailored treatment and the reliance on common therapeutic factors. There are also differences in this work that necessitate providers having foundational knowledge about autism. Purpose: To explore how young adults with serious mental illness (SMI) experience physical activity and how these experiences influence their perceived health and well-being. Methods: Nine young adults with SMI who had participated in an aerobic high-intensity interval training program were interviewed in depth. The interviews were transcribed and subjected to reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The results indicated that people with SMI mainly experience physical activity as a meaningful activity that contributes to an increased sense of well-being and better health. However, to overcome various barriers, it is crucial to experience social support and encouragement. The following three main themes were identified through reflexive thematic analysis: (1) positive changes in focus and an increase in well-being occur through physical activity; (2) increased mental strength results from physical activity; and (3) a lack of support and feelings of safety prevent physical activity. Conclusions: This study shows that adapted physical activity is an important resistance resource that can promote stronger self-identity, increased mental well-being and social engagement and thus contribute to an improved ability to manage stressors. Furthermore, the findings reveal that to engage in physical activity and promote sustainable life changes, it is important for individuals to choose a physical activity based on personal interest and meaning. Background: The absence of even one parent has short- and long-term effects on the child's current and future health. The purpose of the study was to determine whether there is a long-term relationship between the type of family in which men were raised and an individual's adult social position, well-being in adulthood and their biological condition regardless of social status in adulthood. Materials and methods: Data for 4528 males, aged 25-80 years, were selected from the archives of the Lower Silesian Medical Centre in Wroclaw, Poland. A total of 329 men declared that they grew up in incomplete families. Height, weight, % fat, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, blood parameters, and health of men who grew up in complete or incomplete families were compared. Results: Growing up in an incomplete family reduced chances for better education, decreased life satisfaction in adulthood, and negatively affected the final height. After taking into account the education achieved, the effect persisted only for diastolic blood pressure, creatinine, and serum phosphorus levels. Conclusions: Growing up in an incomplete family has a significant impact on male's socioeconomic position (SES), life satisfaction, and final height. Objective: A study was undertaken to explore the differences in nutrition knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices and their correlations among adults in both urban and rural communities in the Free State province of South Africa. Design: This study forms part of the cross-sectional Assuring Health for All in the Free-State (AHA-FS) study. Setting: The AHA-FS study is conducted in urban and rural parts of the Free State province of South Africa. The rural and urban stages of the study were conducted in 2007 and 2009, respectively. Subjects: The sample included 846 adult household members, aged between 25 and 65 years, from both rural and urban areas of the Free State province. Outcome measures: Nutrition knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices were measured. Results: The sample included predominantly females (78.2%). Rural adults had significantly better nutrition knowledge (p < 0.001), positive attitudes (p < 0.001) and positive beliefs (p < 0.001) and their nutrition knowledge and attitudes (r = 0.27, p < 0.001), nutrition knowledge and beliefs (r = 0.16, p < 0.001), and nutrition attitudes and beliefs (r = 0.38, p < 0.001) were significantly correlated with each other. However, nutrition knowledge, attitudes and beliefs were not correlated with nutrition practices among our sample in either the urban or rural setting. Conclusion and implication: The results of the current study confirm that relevant and culturally acceptable nutrition education interventions for translating nutrition-related knowledge, attitudes and beliefs into practices are required. In this paper, we develop a second-order characteristic line scheme for a nonlinear hierarchical juvenile- adult population model of amphibians. The idea of the scheme is not to follow the characteristics from the initial data, but for each time step to find the origins of the grid nodes at the previous time level. Universal Health Coverage (UHC) forces governments to consider not only how services will be provided – but which services – and to whom, when, where, how and at what cost. This paper considers the implications for achieving UHC through the lens of abortion-related care for adolescents. Our comparative study design includes three countries purposively selected to represent varying levels of restriction on access to abortion: Ethiopia (abortion is legal and services implemented); Zambia (legal, complex services with numerous barriers to implementations and provision of information); Malawi (legally highly restricted). Our policy and legal analyses are supplemented by comparative vignettes based on interviews (n = 330) in 2018/2019 with adolescents aged 10–19 who have sought abortion-related care in each country. We focus on an under-considered but critical legal framing for adolescents – the age of consent. We compare legal and political commitments to advancing adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights, including abortion-related care. Ethiopia appears to approach UHC for safe abortion care, and the legal provision for under 18-year-olds appears to be critical. In Malawi, the most restrictive legal environment for abortion, little progress appears to have been made towards UHC for adolescents. In Zambia, despite longstanding legal provision for safe abortion on a wide range of grounds, the limited services combined with low levels of knowledge of the law mean that the combined rights and technical agendas of UHC have not yet been realised. Objective: To describe the dietary intake and its quality of patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by assessing the dietary variety (DVS), dietary diversity (DDS), nutrient adequacy ratio (NAR) and mean nutrient adequacy ratio (MAR). Design: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Setting: Diabetes outpatient clinic at a tertiary hospital in Tshwane district, Gauteng province, South Africa. Subjects: Adults, aged 40–70 years, with poorly controlled T2DM (HbA1c ≥ 8%). Outcome measures: Dietary intake data were obtained through two, multi-pass, 24-hour recalls. Individual food items were used to determine the DVS and DDS. The SAMRC FoodFinder III software was used to analyse the macro- and micronutrients, from which the NAR and MAR scores were determined. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Results: Seventy-seven patients (60 females) participated. Their mean age was 57.2 (±6.6) years. The DDS was adequate at 4.99 (out of a possible 7 food groups); however, the DVS was low (16%) as well as the consumption of vegetables, fruits and legumes. Mean NAR scores indicated insufficient energy intake. Intakes of vitamin D, calcium, folate and iron were below 50% of the recommended daily intake. MAR scores indicated unsatisfactory micronutrient intake at 0.63 (ideal ≥ 1). Conclusions: In this tertiary healthcare setting, T2DM patients with poor glycaemic control had sub-optimal dietary quality. Interventions such as nutrition education programmes that provide simple and factual information on the benefits of healthy eating and practical ways of achieving healthy diets among people with T2DM are needed. Background:Out-of-field teaching (generally defined as a situation where teachers are appointed to areas or phases of learning for which they have no formal qualifications) is an international phenomenon that can impact on the educational experiences of students. Teachers in rural and difficult to staff schools are frequently appointed out-of-field due to teacher shortages. Their lack of qualifications and experience relevant to their appointment can present significant challenges to their induction within the profession. Purpose:From a broader study of the experiences of teachers appointed to rural and remote government schools in their first years of appointment, out-of-field teaching emerged as a significant issue. This paper examines the experiences of out-of-field teachers in rural Western Australia. Sample:The participants were 29 teachers commencing employment at 17 rural/remote Department of Education schools in Western Australia: six multiple case locations and 11 single case sites were included. Four categories of teachers (young novice, mature aged novice, interstate educated and overseas-educated teachers) were identified as groups frequently recruited to fill vacancies in rural/remote schools. Design and methods:The collective case study was conducted in the qualitative, interpretivist paradigm, seeking to understand the lived experiences of participants. Data were collected through: an initial questionnaire; a series of telephone interviews; site visits; and email contact for up to 15 months. Data were initially analysed using inductive processes generating codes and categories; later, more emergent, grounded theory approaches were used. Findings:Six categories were formulated to describe the fit between participants’ qualifications and experiences and their appointment: role-congruence; role-displacement; phase-displacement; role-stretched and phase-stretched. In this small study, nearly half the participants were assigned to roles and/or phases of learning that were categorised as ‘incongruent’. Mis-assigned teachers were more likely to leave their appointments than role- and phase-congruent participants and more likely to express dissatisfaction with quality of worklife. Conclusions:Out-of-field teaching emerged as an important issue that can impact on teachers’ sense of efficacy and teacher attrition. When teachers are mis-assigned, it is suggested that systems and schools should provide support structures to assist teachers to develop their competence and to reduce the potential negative impact on teachers and learners. Background: As universities in many countries engage more directly with industry, the learning emphasis has moved from the student experience to the work-readiness of the graduate. This focus on the student as potential worker is expressed through graduate attributes: particular sets of employability skills developed by institutions and embedded into the curricula. Main argument: Graduate attributes are problematic, however, since they focus firmly on students’ future identity as workers, rather than their current identity as students, and in doing so they offer a simplistic, and – for some – troubling, view of the purpose of universities. In this paper, we advocate a return to consideration of student identity. Conclusion: We suggest that, for students, building an awareness of their student identity as they progress through their higher education experience is not only important for student engagement at university, but is also an integral aspect of shaping their work-readiness as graduates. For large modules taught within the College of Engineering at Swansea University such as the level 1 module Scientific and Engineering Skills (EG168) or the Engineering Analysis (EG189/190) mathematics courses, it is a considerable challenge for the lecturer(s) to develop a meaningful relationship with students. Lecture cohorts on these modules are large (250+ students) and examples are delivered through smaller classes (~50 students) and laboratory sessions delivered by supplementary lecturers and/or postdoctoral researchers. This inevitably leads to a lack of continuity and meaningful engagement with regards to students' contact with the lecturer. It also places a significant pressure on 'office hours' and email. It is common in student module feedback that the generic theory on these courses is not linked closely enough to discipline-specific engineering examples. Often this is due to wide range of disciplines studying the course (the EG168 module is taken by all level 1 engineering students and sports science students). This paper details a project aimed at tackling these problems by establishing an online community, using the social networking facility Twitter to connect students to the lecturer, who was able to drip feed examples to students in the form of online video 'mini lectures' posted and discussed via Twitter. It will be argued that this not only allowed an enhanced sense of affinity and belonging within the module cohort, but also improved real time feedback for the lecturer who was able to adjust future lecture content based on the feedback being received via Twitter. This technique was initially trialled on the EG168 Scientific and Engineering Skills module: a very large module (550 students) taken by students in the first term of their degree at Swansea University. It has more recently been adopted by other lecturers within the College on a range of modules. One of the aims within the EG168 module in recent deliveries has been to try and tailor examples to specific engineering disciplines whilst delivering generic content to the whole cohort through large lectures. It will be shown that delivery of online multimedia discipline-specific examples to students via the web (posted and discussed using Twitter) was a significant factor that helped achieve this. The use of online resources in the assessment of engineering modules is generally being encouraged in higher education institutions. This paper reflects upon the experience of open book testing of first year engineering students in two elements of assessment in a continuously assessed two semester long module. This mode of assessment is more convenient for the large percentage of part-time students on the programme, who only attend one day per week. A longitudinal study over a four year period shows that not all students like to be assessed in this way, even though evidence indicates improvement in pass rates over those achieved from more traditional modes of testing. COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted marginalized groups, including transgender populations, reproducing and exacerbating inequalities and vulnerabilities that existed in those groups prior to the pandemic. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of transgender-specific COVID-19-related stressors and their association with depressive symptoms among South Korean transgender adults. We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study of 564 South Korean transgender adults (trans women, trans men, and nonbinary people) from October 7 to October 31, 2020. We measured four transgender-specific COVID-19-related stressors as follows: (A) had difficulty receiving gender-affirming healthcare due to economic hardship related to COVID-19, (B) had difficulty receiving gender-affirming healthcare due to limited access to hospitals under the COVID-19 situation, (C) had difficulty purchasing a public face mask due to gender information on an identification card, and (D) avoided getting a COVID-19 test in fear of unfair treatment and dirty looks due to gender identity, despite having COVID-19 symptoms. Past-week depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale. Of the total participants, 30.7% experienced any of the four transgender-specific COVID-19-related stressors, and 70.2% were classified as having depressive symptoms during the past week. We found statistically significant associations with depressive symptoms among participants who reported that they had difficulty receiving gender-affirming healthcare due to either economic hardship (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR] = 1.20, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.05–1.37) or limited access to hospitals (aPR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.00–1.32), respectively. Furthermore, those who had two or more of the four transgender-specific COVID-19-related stressors were 1.21 times (95% CI = 1.05–1.40) more likely to report depressive symptoms, compared to those who did not report any stressor. Transgender-specific COVID-19-related stressors may negatively influence depressive symptoms among South Korean transgender adults. To determine individual- and country-level factors associated with self-reported changes in solo and partnered sexual behaviors in an international sample of adults during COVID-19. Data were from the International Sexual Health And REproductive Health during COVID-19 study (I-SHARE)—a cross-sectional, multi-country study (N = 26 countries) assessing adult (N = 19,654) sexual/reproductive health before and during the first wave of COVID-19. We examined self-reported changes (three-point scale: decreased, no change, increased) in solo masturbation, hugging/holding hands/cuddling with a partner, sex with a primary partner, sex with a casual partner, sexting with a partner, viewing sexually explicit media and partnered cybersex. Ordinal regression assessed the impact of individual (age, gender- and sexual-identity, romantic partnership status, employment and income stability, household change and content, mental well-being, changes in alcohol use, and changes in marijuana use) and country-level (e.g., Oxford Stringency Index, Human Development Index, and the Palma Ratio) factors on behavior change. The most common behavior to increase was hugging, kissing, or cuddling with a partner (21.5%), and the most common behavior to decrease was sex with a main partner (36.7%). Household factors like job/income instability and having children over the age of 12 years were significantly associated with decreased affectionate and sexual partnered sexual behaviors; more frequent substance use was linked to significantly increased solo, partnered, and virtual sexual behaviors. Understanding changes in sexual behaviors—as well as the factors that make changes more or less likely among adults around the world—are important to ensure adequate sexual health support development for future public health emergencies. Purpose: Ruxolitinib (selective Janus kinase [JAK] 1 and JAK2 inhibitor) cream demonstrated efficacy and safety in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) in the phase 3 TRuE-AD studies. In TRuE-AD1/ TRuE-AD2 (NCT03745638/NCT03745651), adults and adolescents with mild to moderate AD were randomized to apply twice-daily ruxolitinib cream or vehicle for eightweeks. Here, we evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of ruxolitinib cream by anatomic region, focusing on head/neck (HN) lesions that are typically difficult to manage and disproportionately affect quality of life (QoL). Materials and methods: Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) responses in anatomic regions were evaluated in the pooled population (N=1208) and among patients with baseline HN involvement (n=663). Itch, Investigator’s Global Assessment (IGA), QoL, and application site tolerability were also assessed. Results: By Week 2 (earliest assessment), ruxolitinib cream application resulted in significant improvements across all EASI anatomic region subscores and AD signs versus vehicle, with further improvements through Week 8. Significantly more patients with HN involvement who applied ruxolitinib cream versus vehicle achieved clinically meaningful improvements in itch, IGA, and QoL. Application site reactions with ruxolitinib cream were infrequent (<3%), including in patients with HN involvement. This paper reexamines the proposition that old people lose prestige with societal modernization. I argue that while the basic notion of a decline in the relative position of old people with industrialization is supportable the focus on industrialization or modernization is restrictive and misleading. It is the interaction between historically variable exchange rates and individual possession of valued resources that determines the ability of an age-group member to participate in satisfying and profitable social exchange. The differential allocation of valued resources across age strata establishes an age-relevant exchange rate for that particular period. The rate favors the aged in agrarian societies because of their control over land and disfavors the superannuated in industrial societies because of their exclusion from labor markets. As a result, old people in modern society incur greater costs to achieve comparable levels of reward (prestige and privilege) as their age-mates in non-modern societies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An introduction is presented that discusses issue articles on topics including the use of social media for feedback in engineering courses, the enhancement of student engagement in engineering education, and the use of online testing in engineering courses.

Objectives: This study examined associations between young adults' psychological characteristics and psychosocial consequences of sex, and whether risky sexual encounters mediated these associations. Methods: College students (N = 265; Mage = 19.49) completed questionnaires concerning risky sexual relationships, behaviors, situations, and psychosocial consequences during their most recent encounter and over the last year. Results: Sexual restraint indirectly predicted positive consequences of the most recent encounter via risky sexual behaviors. Sexual restraint and permissiveness predicted positive and negative consequences over the past year via risky relationships. To explore the relationship between sexual orientation and specific sexual and risk behaviors, compare the number of sexual behaviors and attitudes among people of different sexual orientations, and test the mediating effect of attitudes toward sexual behaviors in the relationship between sexual orientation and the number of sexual behaviors. A total of 2288 participants completed a checklist of sexual behaviors, indicators of sexual risk behaviors, and a scale of attitudes toward sexual behaviors. Bisexual women engaged in a greater number of sexual behaviors and had more positive attitudes toward sexual behaviors than heterosexual women. Homosexual men engaged in a greater number of sexual behaviors than heterosexual men, and homosexual and bisexual men had more positive attitudes toward sexual behaviors than heterosexuals. Finally, we show the mediating role of attitudes toward sexual behaviors in the relationship between sexual orientation and the number of sexual behaviors engaged in. Baricitinib is an oral selective Janus kinase 1/2 inhibitor approved for moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) in adults. To evaluate absolute Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) and SCORing of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) outcomes over 16 weeks and to link disease severity categories to quality of life (QoL) improvements. This post-hoc analysis included patients enrolled in Phase3 monotherapy (BREEZE-AD1/AD2) and topical corticosteroid (TCS) combination therapy (BREEZE-AD7) trials and analyzed baricitinib 2 and 4 mg vs. placebo. Categorical outcomes were analyzed using Fisher's exact test. Significantly more baricitinib-treated patients reached EASI ≤ 7 and SCORAD < 25 as early as week 1 in monotherapy and week 2 in TCS combination therapy, compared to placebo. Significant response vs. placebo was sustained until week 16 for EASI ≤ 7 (AD1/2 [p-value vs. placebo]: 2 mg = 19.9%, 4 mg = 25.4% [p = 0.001] and AD7: 2 mg = 40.4% [p = 0.087], 4 mg = 48.6% [p = 0.003]) and SCORAD < 25 (AD1/2: 2 mg = 12.2%, 4 mg = 19.4% [p = 0.001] and AD7: 2 mg = 30.3% [p = 0.025], 4 mg = 34.2% [p = 0.004]) severity categories. These effects were accompanied by rapid improvements in QoL. Baricitinib-treated patients rapidly achieved recommended absolute EASI and SCORAD treatment outcomes which were sustained until week 16. Improvements in QoL were greater than EASI severity categories reflected, indicating that physician-assessed scores do not necessarily correlate with patients' impression of AD severity. Patients who completed the originating studies, BREEZE-AD1 (NCT03334396), BREEZE-AD2(NCT03334422), and BREEZE-AD7 (NCT03733301), were eligible for enrollment in the multicenter,phase-3, long-term extension study BREEZE-AD3 (NCT03334435). At week 52, responders and partial responders to baricitinib 4 mg were re-randomized (1:1) into the sub-study to dose continuation (4 mg, N = 84), or dose down-titration (2 mg, N = 84). Maintenance of response was assessed from week 52 to 104 of BREEZE-AD3. Physician-rated outcomes included vIGA-AD (0,1), EASI75, and mean change from baseline in EASI. Patient-reported outcomes included DLQI, P OEM total score, HADS, and from baseline: WPAI (presenteeism, absenteeism, overall work impairment, daily activity impairment) and change from baseline in SCORAD itch and sleep loss. With continuous treatment with baricitinib 4 mg, efficacy was maintained up to week 104 in vIGA-AD (0,1), EASI75, EASI mean change from baseline, SCORAD itch, SCORAD sleep loss, DLQI, P OEM, HADS, and WPAI (all scores). Patients down-titrated to 2 mg maintained most of their improvements in each of these measures. The sub-study of BREEZE AD3 supports flexibility in baricitinib dosing regimens. CJM112 is a potent anti-IL-17A monoclonal antibody, whose clinical efficacy in psoriasis was recently documented. This study aimed to assess the effect of IL-17A blockade, using CJM112, in patients with moderate to severe acne. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group, proof-of-concept study was conducted on patients with moderate to severe acne. Patients received CJM112 300 mg, 75 mg, or placebo subcutaneously during Treatment Period 1 (0–12 weeks). Patients receiving placebo were re-randomized to receive CJM112 300 mg or 75 mg during Treatment Period 2 (12–24 weeks). The primary endpoint was the number of inflammatory facial lesions at Week 12. As the futility criterion was met during the interim analysis, only 52/75 (69.3%) patients were recruited. In total, 48/52 (92.3%) and 26/41 (63.4%) completed Treatment Periods 1 and 2, respectively. All groups exhibited a reduction in facial inflammatory lesions, with no difference observed between CJM112 and placebo (CJM112 300 mg 27.6 ± 20.7; CJM112 75 mg 30.4 ± 34.8; placebo 23.6 ± 13.6; primary endpoint). Additionally, no differences were observed between groups in other secondary and exploratory endpoints at Week 12.
