Recently, telesurgery, as a branch of telemedicine, is growing at great speed. In telesurgery, a remote surgeon can communicate with operating room through communication networks in order to perform remote operation. Because human life is at stake in telesurgery, it is necessary to implement appropriate Traffic Engineering (TE) techniques to manage and route telesurgical data traffics over communication networks. Implementing proper TE technique can increase Quality of Experience (QoE) for the remote surgeon, and as a result, it increases the accuracy and performance of telesurgery. In recent years, the advent of Software Defined Network (SDN) has facilitated network providers to develop efficient TE methods to guarantee QoE for their customer applications. In this paper, a novel multi-objective TE technique called SMOTE is proposed to guarantee QoE for telesurgery applications over SDN. The goal of this paper is to enable a network administrator to provide a satisfactory remote operation by providing QoE for the remote surgeon. The objectives, which are considered in our proposed method, are the minimization of end-to-end delay and packet loss. SMOTE uses Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) a well-known multi-objective algorithm, to solve the optimization model for calculating optimal routes between the remote surgeon and the operating room. Presently, most smart cities face massive traffic issues every day. The smart cities' significant challenge is the traffic control system, wherein some places are automated and cost-effective. In this manuscript, cloud-assisted Internet of things Intelligent Transportation System (CIoT-ITS) is proposed to overcome traffic management's challenges. Here, the IoT sensor integrated camera is installed in every traffic signal corner to monitor the vehicle's flow. Further, the optimised vehicle flow data is sent to the cloud processes. The data from the various signal corners runs an algorithm to detect traffic direction and controls the signal lights. The alert notification is sent to the nearest traffic control room during traffic congestion using IoT sensors. Simulation analysis proved that the proposed CIoT-ITS could monitor and manage the vehicle flow successfully and automatically. Concerning the critical role of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) in tackling the problem of traffic congestion, and enhancing the safety, mobility and sustainability of the transport network, this paper provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in Connected Vehicle (CV) technology, its features and terminology. The real-world implementation of the CV technologies can result in a better understanding of the practical and technical issues. Given the technical and conceptual challenges, as well as novelty factors associated with CVs, many CV pilot studies around the world are reviewed, and their findings are summarized. The paper contributes to the literature by reviewing the characteristics, communication platform, multimodality, size and type of study areas of the pilot CV testbeds across the world. This research also paves the way for the better development of CV technology by comparing and discussing the pros and cons of the existing CV pilot testbeds. Moreover, we have discussed the evaluation plans and the advantages and disadvantages of different testbeds. Besides, as a main component of the CV system, the traffic signal control algorithms, as well as transit signal priority in a CV ecosystem, are also reviewed. Based on our findings, the real-time data obtained from the CV system could result in a better adjustment of traffic signal parameters which consequently enhance the traffic regulation in the network (say up to 30% in terms of travel time in comparison with an actuated coordinated traffic signal). However, a major criticism of the existing traffic signal strategies in a CV system is that they do not utilize the maximum capability of the CV system (V2 V, V2I and I2I communications). In this paper, two new adaptive traffic signal control algorithms are proposed based on data from probe vehicles to realize the coordinated signal control of arterial roads. One is an iterative signal control algorithm, and the other is an optimized signal control algorithm. The proportion of vehicles in the nonstop group is selected as the indicator of the traffic state. The value for this indicator can be accurately estimated by data from probe vehicles. Our goal is to ease traffic congestion and enhance the capacities of traffic networks. Compared with the Webster fixed-time signal control algorithm, these two new adaptive signal control algorithms are evaluated on a microscopic simulation platform. Simulation results show that the average travel time is reduced by 32% under the iterative signal control algorithm and by 23% under the optimized signal control algorithm, and the average delay times are reduced by 36% and 35%, respectively. In the meantime, the average number of stops under the iterative signal control algorithm is reduced by 43%, and under the optimized signal control algorithm, by 67%. They indicate that the two new adaptive signal control algorithms are effective for easing traffic congestion and achieve the adaptive signal control objectives using real-time traffic information. Timing urban traffic is moral work. In this paper, I show how the moral work that goes into timing traffic lights addresses both industrial, civic, and domestic worth in ways that cut generalization short. Relying upon ethnographic fieldwork, this paper focuses on how municipal traffic engineering maintains traffic lights and handles complaints about them. Steeped in moral ambiguity, the paper argues, municipal traffic engineering resorts to singularizing complaints, truncating worth, and working with careful dedication from one contestable compromise to the next. We study a future Internet networking paradigm where instead of congestion control an open loop traffic control is applied. We aim to give theoretical foundations for data transfer controlled only by the access points of the network. The key characteristics of networks without congestion control are stability and efficiency addressed in this paper. We consider the queue length processes of data-flows on directed graphs. The stability is characterized by the ergodicity of these processes and the efficiency of the network is measured by the Price of Anarchy. Under restrictions on the input traffic rates we derive an achievable efficiency limit in a stable network for very general conditions, namely, for any network topology and for any buffer management policy. Moreover, we show that even for cyclic networks, which usually cause severe instability in networks, an upper bound for the loss of efficiency can be given independently of the size of the network under a fair AQM buffer management policy. Furthermore, for monotonic networks we present a reasonable choice for setting access capacities. Our results demonstrate that with a proper setting of access capacities of incoming flows the congestion collapse of the Internet can be avoided even without congestion control. Travel time is an important performance measure used to assess traffic operational quality of various types of facilities. Previous efforts to estimate travel time have also compared model-estimated travel times to field-measured travel times using various sources of data. Given the variety and diversity of travel time measurement methods, it is important to evaluate the accuracy of the data obtained by each of them and to develop recommendations regarding their suitability in the validation of travel time estimation models. The research objective for this paper was to collect field data along several freeways and arterials and to evaluate the travel times obtained by STEWARD (Statewide Traffic Engineering Warehouse for Regionally Archived Data), INRIX, BlueTOAD (Bluetooth Travel-time Origination and Destination), and HERE. Benchmark data were collected with the use of an instrumented vehicle at five freeway segments and two arterial segments in Florida. The field-measured travel times were statistically compared with the travel times provided through various methods. The results suggest that the HERE traffic data provide better freeway travel time estimates compared to the remaining methods. In oversaturated conditions, STEWARD, INRIX and BlueTOAD data seem to underestimate travel times, while HERE data were found to be more accurate. For undersaturated freeways, STEWARD, INRIX and BlueTOAD were found to perform better than HERE. At the arterial sites BlueTOAD and HERE travel time data were analyzed and the analysis suggests that none of the methods is accurate, possibly due to the small sample size. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traffic prediction is critical for the success of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, most spatio-temporal models suffer from high mathematical complexity and low tune-up flexibility. This article presents a novel spatio-temporal random effects (STRE) model that has a reduced computational complexity due to mathematical dimension reduction, with additional tune-up flexibility provided by a basis function capable of taking traffic patterns into account. Bellevue, WA, was selected as the model test site due to its widespread deployment of loop detectors. Data collected during the 2 weeks of July 2007 from 105 detectors in the downtown area were used in the modeling process and traffic volumes predicted for 14 detectors for the entire month of July 2008. The results show that the STRE model not only effectively predicts traffic volume but also outperforms three well-established volume prediction models, the enhanced versions of autoregressive moving average (ARMA) and spatiotemporal ARMA, and artificial neural network. Even without further model tuning, all the experimental links produced mean absolute percentage errors between 8% and 16% except for three atypical locations. Short-term traffic prediction plays an important role in intelligent transport systems. This paper presents a novel two-stage prediction structure using the technique of Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA) as a data smoothing stage to improve the prediction accuracy. Moreover, a novel prediction method named Grey System Model (GM) is introduced to reduce the dependency on method training and parameter optimisation. To demonstrate the effects of these improvements, this paper compares the prediction accuracies of SSA and non-SSA model structures using both a GM and a more conventional Seasonal Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) prediction model. These methods were calibrated and evaluated using traffic flow data from a corridor in Central London under both normal and incident traffic conditions. The prediction accuracy comparisons show that the SSA method as a data smoothing step before the application of machine learning or statistical prediction methods can improve the final traffic prediction accuracy. Optimization of traffic network performance using dynamic traffic management (DTM) measures can be viewed as a specific example of solving a network design problem (NDP). Decision variables are the specific settings of DTM measures. DTM measures have been identified as powerful instruments not only to increase network efficiency, but also to improve externalities. As a result, in the optimization the focus is not only on efficiency, but also on climate, air quality, traffic safety, and noise. These assessment criteria are determined using the output of a dynamic traffic assignment model. This results in a dynamic multi-objective NDP, which is solved as a bilevel optimization problem; it results in a Pareto optimal set. This set provides valuable information for the decision-making process, which would not have been available if the compensation principle would have been chosen in advance. Knowledge obtained by optimization of realistic cases can be used to attain knowledge about incorporation of externalities as an objective when optimizing traffic systems using DTM measures. A case study for a realistic network of the city of Almelo shows that the objectives efficiency, climate, and air quality are mainly aligned and mainly opposed to traffic safety and noise. However, there is not a single solution that optimizes all three aligned objectives. Under Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), real-time operations of traffic management measures depend on long-term planning results, such as the origin-destination (OD) trip distribution; however, results from current planning procedures are unable to provide fundamental data for dynamic analysis. In order to capture dynamic traffic characteristics, transportation planning models should play an important role to integrate basic data with real-time traffic management and control. In this paper, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to establish the linkage between daily OD trips and dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) procedures; thus results from transportation planning projects, in terms of daily OD trips, can be extended to estimate time-dependent OD trips. Field data from Taiwan are collected and applied in the calibration and validation processes. Dynamic Network Assignment-Simulation Model for Advanced Road Telematics (DYNASMART-P), a simulation-based DTA model, is applied to generate time-dependent flows. Located in the eastern coastal areas of the Yangtze River estuary, Chongming is the key strategic space for sustainable development in Shanghai. However, in recent years, Chongming Island has been experiencing increasing levels of traffic, taxing its transportation capacity and raising the question of whether it will be able to continue to meets its growing traffic demand. Simply adding infrastructure will not only fail to meet the need of increased levels of transportation availability, it would also increase pollution and damage the environment of Chongming. This paper argues that the construction of the Chongming Island Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) can improve the utilization of land resources in the city, improve the road network capacity and quality of service lines, and effectively control pollution, thus promoting the sustainable economic and environmental development of Chongming Island. Travel time for an itinerary constitutes one of the most relevant roadway traffic metrics. Numerous studies have been conducted to estimate travel times on the basis of data from loop detectors. This article focuses on evaluating the performance of a set of estimation methods—algorithms that estimate route travel times using specific speed data from dual loop detectors for real-time applications, such as displaying travel times on changeable message signs. The travel-time estimates are evaluated against probe vehicle data obtained from FasTrak in the San Francisco Bay Area to determine the accuracy of the estimates. The study reveals that (a) the dispersion of travel time is often larger in off-peak periods than in peak periods for heavily congested freeways; (b) assessed against the same set of speed data, the evaluated algorithms have similar performance; (c) the accuracy of travel-time estimates on the basis of loop-detector data is better in off-peak periods than in peak periods; (d) lane-by-lane speeds from loop detectors may be used to improve travel time estimation; and (e) travel time estimation quality is more sensitive to actual sensor locations if sensors are sparse. Usually, benefits from deploying an adaptive traffic control system are measured by comparing data collected in the field before the system is installed with those collected after the system is fully operational. Such an approach is costly because it requires installation of a system before potential benefits can be observed. Nowadays to investigate effectiveness of many alternatives that were traditionally investigated in field, microsimulation is used. However, how much can one rely on results from microsimulation? There has not been a single study in which benefits of adaptive traffic control systems measured in the field are compared with those obtained through microsimulation. This study presents such a research effort. The authors compared performance measures from a field evaluation of Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System in Park City, Utah, to their counterparts from microsimulation. They collected a significant amount of data to assess system performance in the field and to help build a microsimulation model. A 14-intersection model of the Park City network was developed, calibrated, and validated on the basis of multiple data sources. Traffic incidents are a major contributor to congestion on US freeways, resulting in millions of dollars in property damage and significant deaths and injuries each year. Because a single incident can cause traffic delays, equally devastating secondary incidents can result. Thus, the faster an incident is detected, verified, and cleared, the less significant the impact. Traffic cameras and other technologies are widely used for this purpose. This work examined the effectiveness of traffic cameras at five metropolitan freeway sites in South Carolina using the traffic simulation software PARAMICS to simulate various incident scenarios and traffic camera operations through application programming interfaces. The authors used these interfaces to produce random spatial and temporal occurrence of incidents, including the incident start times, durations and locations. A benefit-cost analysis based on the simulation results suggested traffic cameras returned $12 for every dollar spent under the prevailing conditions at the study sites. A sensitivity study, varying different benefit- and cost-related parameters, such as deployment costs, number of incidents, and discount rate, revealed benefit-cost values that were always above one. Flow of traffic on freeways and limited access highways can be represented as a series of kinemetic waves. Solutions to these systems of equations become problematic under congested traffic flow conditions, and under complicated (real-world) networks. A simplified theory of kinematics waves (KWaves) was previously proposed. Simplifying elements includes translation of the problem to moving coordinate system, adoption of triangular speed-density relationships, and adoption of restrictive constraints at the on- and off-ramps. However, these simplifying assumptions preclude application of this technique to most practical situations. By directly addressing the limitations of the original theory, this article proposes a simplified Kwaves model for network traffic (N-KWaves). Several key constraints of the original theory are relaxed. For example, the original merge model, which gives full priority to on-ramp traffic, is relaxed and replaced with a capacity-based weighted queuing (CBWFQ) merge model. The original diverge model, which blocks upstream traffic as a whole when a downstream queue exceeds the diverge, is also relaxed and replaced with a contribution-based weighted splitting (CBWS) diverge model. Based on the above, the original theory is reformulated and extended to address network traffic. Central to the N-KWaves model is a five-step computational procedure based on a generic building block. It is assumed that a freeway network can be represented by the combination of some special cases of the generic building block. An empirical field study showed satisfactory results. Video object tracking is an important method of traffic detection in Intelligent Transportation Systems. In video traffic tracking systems the matching method is often used to find the position of moving objects. In this article an improved algorithm of corner feature extraction is presented and corner points are tracked as the feature points of traffic objects. The tracking precision is mainly decided by matching algorithms. If the matching is not accurate, good tracking results cannot be achieved. In this article Kalman Filtering is used to track the moving traffic objects. In this system two kinds of data are used: One is from the general matching algorithm, which is the representation of the target's position; the other is detected by a spatial filtering velocimeter, containing the rough flow velocity of the targets. Though neither kind of data are highly accurate, Kalman Filtering is capable of integrating both position and velocity data to obtain better tracking results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article a nonlinear model predictive control approach to the problem of coordinated ramp metering is presented. The previously designed optimal control tool Advanced Motorway Optimal Control (AMOC) is used within the framework of a hierarchical control structure which consists of three basic layers: the estimation/prediction layer, the optimization layer, and the direct control layer. More emphasis is given to the last two layers where the control actions on a network-wide and on a local level, respectively, are decided. The hierarchical control strategy combines AMOC's coordinated ramp metering control with local feedback Asservissement LInéaire d'Entré Autoroutière (ALINEA) control in an efficient way. Simulation investigations for the Amsterdam ring-road are reported whereby the results are compared with those obtained by applying ALINEA as a stand-alone strategy. This article presents a discrete-event stochastic microscopic simulation model specifically developed to evaluate the operational performance of toll plazas. The model has been calibrated, validated, and applied to toll plazas equipped with Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) in Orlando, Florida. Traffic behavior is represented using a set of mathematical and logic algorithms that control the conflicts among vehicles within the toll plaza area. Modified versions of Car-Following and Lane-Changing Algorithms and a new Toll-Lane Selection Algorithm are integrated into this new model to simulate traffic operation at toll plazas. The model output includes Measures of Effectiveness that can be used to evaluate the performance of existing and future individual toll lanes and the entire toll plaza system. Real-life data collected at the busiest toll plaza in the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA) system was compared with the model output to validate the developed model. Statistical tests indicated that there is no significant difference at the 95% confidence level between Measures of Effectiveness obtained from the model and those collected in the real world. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are playing increasingly important roles in addressing traffic congestion, safety, and environmental concerns. Archiving and “reusing” the vast amounts of data initially collected by ITS for real-time operations holds the potential to significantly improve a wide range of transportation analyses. Effectively archiving and deriving information from ITS data requires the application of technology and algorithms recently developed and proven in research. This paper describes and summarizes this research, particularly in areas such as data warehousing, complex systems development, traffic data aggregation, traffic data imputation, and traffic data characterization. Much has been written about the technologies of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) - electronic systems that support the driver in controlling his vehicle in a better way. Within this literature, there is usually a focus on specific ADAS technologies and/or specific aspects of ADAS implementation. Broader pictures of ADAS implementation, in which the various ADAS, their possible consequences for transportation system performance, and societal conditions for implementation are treated in an integrated way, are seldom presented. As such, the current value of these studies is highly limited with regard to public policymaking. In this paper, we take a system view of policymaking for ADAS implementation. Within this view, policymaking concerns making choices regarding a system (e.g., the transport system) in order to obtain desired system outcomes. We apply this view to the field of policymaking with respect to ADAS implementation, showing that large uncertainties exist about future transport system contexts, the outcomes of ADAS policy decisions, and the valuation of the outcomes by stakeholders involved in or affected by ADAS policy decisions. In order to deal with these uncertainties, a flexible or adaptive policy is proposed that takes some actions right away and creates a framework for future actions that allow for adaptations over time as knowledge about ADAS accumulates and critical events for ADAS implementation take place.
