This study provides new insights onto spatial and temporal trends of seafloor macro-litter in the abyssal seafloor of Sardinian channel, in central western Mediterranean (Italy). Trawl surveys were conducted at depths between 884 and 1528 m, thus focusing on one of the least investigated marine environments. None of the considered sites was litter free, with plastics being numerically dominant (57% of items), followed by metal (11%) and glass (16%). Recorded densities and weight ranged between 49.9 and 499 items km−2 and 1.4 and 1052 kg km−2. In the most contaminated sites, the weight of the litter collected in nets represented up to nine times the biomass of benthic megafauna, and, overall, in 60% of hauls macro-litter mass outweighed the biomass collected. Moreover, we report that megafauna was observed to be more abundant in sites where macro-litter presence was more severe. More studies are needed to elucidate the nature of this correlation, with biota being more abundant in hotspots of accumulation of seafloor macro-litter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In ancient records, discrimination of specific triggering events from sediment gravity flow deposits is very difficult, due to multiple interactions between triggering events and similar sedimentary characteristics. For this study, we introduce the Hakcheon-Chogok Megaturbidite (HCM) in the Miocene Pohang-Youngduk Basin (PYB), providing an opportunity to differentiate the triggering events. This megaturbidite is over 70 m thick in the proximal part and less than 4 m thick in the distal part. The diachronous stratigraphic position and distinct coarser sediments than those of the underlying and overlying successions suggest a large-scale slope failure of the fine-grained foreset (more than 2 km3). The occurrence of exotic granitic boulders, originating from the basement rock, more than 1 km west of the present fan-apex, is indicative of extreme sea-level run-up. The dispersal pattern and paleocurrent direction suggest that the HCM flowed to the northeast, irrespective of the local depositional slope which show a radial distribution from the fan-apex. The distribution pattern almost perpendicular to the strike of the NW-SE trending transfer fault suggests that the HCM was triggered by a reflection flow of giant tsunami wave, resulting in a large-scale failure of high-gradient (> 15° in slope angle) fandelta slope. The presented work deals with the numerical modeling of intense bedload-transport processes at confluences of mountain rivers and steep tributaries. Steep tributaries are characterized by having high transport capacities which supply large amounts of sediments to the confluence zone, where due to the sudden change in slope and the local hydraulic conditions, intense deposition can occur. The objectives of this study are to understand the potential applications and limitations of 2D numerical simulations for modeling these processes. The calibration of the applied 2D numerical model (BASEMENT, Basic Simulation Environment, v2.8) is based on comparing high-density point clouds of the confluence morphology at the end of flume experimental runs with numerical results. The calibrated numerical model is then used to test different discharge ratios and to investigate depositional patterns and mechanisms. The results show that key morphological features such as the confluence fan, the bank-attached bar and the scour hole can be accurately reproduced, showing that 2D numerical simulations are a valuable tool for modeling the complex interactions between morphodynamics and hydraulics at river confluences. Additionally, it is shown that the confluence morphology of steep tributaries and mountain rivers is strongly influenced by the sediment concentration in the tributary channel and the discharge in the main channel. The Frigg Field, located in the Viking Graben of the Northern North Sea, contains complex submarine fan successions. Based on an interpretation of wellbores and seismic datasets with varying quality, previous works reported these successions to be characterized by submarine channels-infills. However, there are limited studies on the evolution history of these channels and their influence on sediment distribution. This study has combined the interpretation of wellbores and 3D seismic datasets to establish the spatial evolution of the submarine channels and their influence on sediment distribution. Petrophysical approaches, core studies and seismic attributes analysis were used to accomplish this work. Results show that the development of the Frigg fan complex was influenced by regional tectonics and sea level fluctuations that triggered sediment gravity flows. These gravity flows followed approximately N–S to NE–SW, E, and NW–SE trending submarine channels. Deposition began with the N–S to NE–SW trending channels that were followed by the eastward flowing submarine channel. The system with three major channels (NE–SW, E, and NW–SE) followed before the N–S to NE–SW trending system re-emerged. The final phase of deposition had the NE–SW, E and NW–SE trending channels. The revealed submarine channels facilitated the deposition of sediment lobes identified based on seismic attribute maps showing the geomorphology of the basin floor area during different periods. The observed geomorphological features show that the submarine channels became dominant during the deposition of the upper Frigg interval and their influence decreased toward the distal basinal areas. This investigation documents that the Rugged Terrain Unit, the Stimson formation, and the Greenheugh sandstone were deposited in a 1200 m-deep lake that formed after the emergence of Mt. Sharp in Gale crater, Mars, nearly 4 billion years ago. In fact, the Curiosity rover traversed on a surface that once was the bottom of this lake and systematically examined the strata that were deposited in its deepest waters on the crater floor to layers that formed along its shoreline on Mt. Sharp. This provided a rare opportunity to document the evolution of one aqueous episode from its inception to its desiccation and to determine the warming mechanism that caused it. Deep water lacustrine siltstones directly overlie conglomerates that were deposited by mega floods on the crater floor. This indicates that the inception phase of the lake was sudden and took place when flood waters poured into the crater. The lake expanded quickly and its shoreline moved up the slope of Mt. Sharp during the lake-level rise phase and deposited a layer of sandstone with large cross beds under the influence of powerful storm waves. The lake-level highstand phase was dominated by strong bottom currents that transported sediments downhill and deposited one of the most distinctive sedimentological features in Gale crater: a layer of sandstone with a 3 km-long field of meter-high subaqueous antidunes (the Washboard) on Mt. Sharp. Bottom current continued downhill and deposited sandstone and siltstone on the foothills of Mt. Sharp and on the crater floor, respectively. The lake-level fall phase caused major erosion of lacustrine strata that resulted in their patchy distribution on Mt. Sharp. Eroded sediments were then transported to deep waters by gravity flows and were re-deposited as conglomerate and sandstone in subaqueous channels and in debris flow fans. The desiccation phase took place in calm waters of the lake. The aqueous episode we investigated was vigorous but short-lived. Its characteristics as determined by our sedimentological study matches those predicted by an asteroid impact. This suggests that the heat generated by an impact transformed Mars into a warm, wet, and turbulent planet. It resulted in planet-wide torrential rain, giant floods on land, powerful storms in the atmosphere, and strong waves in lakes. The absence of age dates prevents the determination of how long the lake existed. In western Greece is the Pindos Foreland Basin, a geological depression that contains approximately 2500 m of mainly Upper Eocene to Lower Oligocene submarine fans deposits. Despite the extensive stratigraphic and structural research that has defined the basin as a foreland basin that developed adjacent to Pindos Orogen, the impact of orogenic history and erosion on sedimentation has not been evaluated. This study investigates the origin and tectonic setting of the central Pindos Foreland Basin using new provenance data. Petrographic and geochemical analyses suggest that the succession was primarily sourced by sedimentary, felsic, and intermediate igneous, and low-grade metamorphic source rocks. The geochemical analysis reveals that the sediments are immature and have undergone little to moderate weathering, and low degrees of sediment recycling and sorting. A secondary mafic source with high Cr and Ni contents and high Cr/V ratios. The provenance data indicate that Pindos Orogen represents the source region and agree with the existing sedimentological and palaeocurrent research. The Pindos sedimentary and Pelagonian volcano-sedimentary units, mixed with a mafic source (Pindos ophiolitic units) and low grade metamorphics produce the observed chemical and petrographic variance. Multidimensional discrimination diagrams suggest sediment sources from a collisional setting and confirm the active continental edge setting. The provenance data display an up-section increase in lithic fragments, recording the growing history of the Pindos orogen and the gradual exhumation of the source regions. The Eastern Mediterranean region, extending from the Offshore Nile Delta Cone of Egypt to the Levant Basin, is a confirmed hydrocarbon-rich territory with several giant gas discoveries. Numerous gas fields have been discovered in the Miocene reservoirs within the Nile Delta Cone, and the Levant Basin. The Miocene sedimentary sequences in this region are extremely heterogeneous, consisting mainly of turbiditic slope deposits, channels, and basin floor fans that were capped by evaporites formed during the Messinian Salinity Crisis. As a result, the seismic characteristics and interpreted properties of this heterogeneous section are ambiguous. The study area is located in the Offshore North Sinai Basin, where a thick Early Miocene section was deposited midway between the Nile Delta province, which includes the El-Fayrouz discovery, and the Levant Basin, which includes Tamar, Tanin, and several other discoveries. This study uses quantitative seismic interpretations methods, such as amplitude variations with offset and fluid replacement modeling, to assess the seismic acoustic impedance trend with depth. Also, determine the seismic amplitude response for the brine and gas sands reservoir of the Early and Late Miocene section to link the unexplored study area within the North Sinai Offshore Basin with the explored Nile Delta and Levant Basins. In addition to evaluate direct hydrocarbon indicator (DHI) of the dimming seismic amplitude that is compatible with the structure's last closed contour of the Syrian Arc anticline of the Early Miocene reservoirs (EMT-1 prospect). Different vintages of 2D and 3D seismic data, six wells, and various published data were used in this study. The quantitative interpretation shows the pitfalls of the acoustic impedance trend and seismic response dependency on depth for gas and brine sand, which led to the drilling of the EMT-1 dry well. Also, the fluid replacement, P-wave velocity (Vp), and density (ρ) modeling confirmed that the seismic dimming amplitude was due to a seismic processing artifact, which was corrected by readjusting the overburden Messinian salt processing velocity model. This research concludes that the seismic quantitative interpretations are successfully used to assess the acoustic impedance versus depth and understand DHI pitfalls, as well as the processing workflow that could enhance the seismic image. The sedimentology of the Garubathan alluvial fan of north Bengal foothills is a product of Himalayan neotectonics and monsoon climate. The active neo-tectonics of the Main Central Thrust (MCT), Ramgarh Thrust (RT) and Ghis Transverse Fault (GTF) produce a huge amount of angular clasts in the upper reaches of the river Chel and Mal. During the wet season, either sediment flow by gravity or turbulent stream flow or both, move the clasts to the downhill. The tectonic zone of Main Boundary Thrust (MBT) and Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) are relative passive thrusts than the MCT, RT and GTF in the study area. A very low angle slope is observed in the area of MBT and MFT of the study area. So, the downhill deposition occurred in MBT and MFT zones of the study area. The river Chel and Mal are perinial rivers. During dry periods (pre-monsoon and post-monsoon), in the absence of sediment flow by gravity or turbulent stream flow, the low stream competency deposit the fine sediments. To identify the depositional environments three, seven and six lithofacies varieties were identified in the upper, middle and lower fan surfaces, respectively. The non-cohesive sediment flows by gravity deposited large angular boulders, cobbles and pebbles in the upper fan area. These deposits are either chaotic, unsorted, un-imbricated or graded and imbricated. Deposition of sand is scanty. Both, sediment flow by gravity and fluvial processes deposited angular to round clasts with matrix in the middle fan area. In this area the deposits are reverse graded, reverse to normally graded, laminated and cross-bedded. The high facies diversity of this area indicates highly variable nature of the depositional environments. In the lower fan area, presence of both clast-supported chaotic and matrix-supported laminated or cross-bedded layers suggests a complex nature of the depositional environment of sediment flow by gravity and fluvial processes. Seafloor methane emissions can affect Earth's climate and ocean chemistry. Vast quantities of methane formed by microbial decomposition of organic matter are locked within gas hydrate and free gas on continental slopes, particularly in large areas with high sediment accumulations such as deep-sea fans. The release of methane in slope environments has frequently been associated with dissociation of gas hydrates near the edge of the gas hydrate stability zone on the upper slope, with discharges in greater water depths less understood. Here we show, using data from the Rio Grande Cone (western South Atlantic), that the intrinsic, gravity-induced downslope collapse of thick slope sediment accumulations creates structures that serve as pathways for gas migration, unlocking methane and causing seafloor emissions via giant gas flares in the water column. The observed emissions in the study region (up to 310 Mg year−1) are three times greater than estimates for the entire US North Atlantic margin and reveal the importance of collapsing sediment accumulations for ocean carbon cycling. Similar outgassing systems on the Amazon and Niger fans suggest that gravity tectonics on passive margins is a common yet overlooked mechanism driving massive seafloor methane emissions in sediment-laden continental slopes. Deep-sea turbidite has been used to determine the history of occurrence of large earthquakes. Surface-sediment remobilization is a mechanism of the generation of earthquake-induced turbidity currents. However, the detailed mechanism of surface-sediment remobilization caused by earthquake ground shaking is unclear. To understand how high peak ground acceleration (PGA) caused by a large earthquake can remobilize surface sediments, we determined the age of a surface-sediment core recovered from the mid-slope terrace (MST) of the inner slope of the Japan Trench in northern Sanriku to determine turbidites generated by large historical earthquakes and calculate the PGAs of these earthquakes using an empirical attenuation relation commonly used in Japan. Small offsets in radiocarbon ages and excess 210Pb activities between turbidite and hemipelagic muds suggest that the turbidites in the core resulted from surface-sediment remobilization. 137Cs and excess 210Pb chronologies indicate that the three uppermost turbidites in the core are correlated with three large historical earthquakes, namely the 1968 common era (CE) Tokachi-oki, the 1933 CE Showa–Sanriku, and the 1896 CE Meiji–Sanriku earthquakes. Calculation of PGAs for large historical earthquakes along the northern Japan Trench indicates that a PGA of > 0.6 g is necessary for turbidite deposition in the MST basin. This threshold is larger than that reported for central Sanriku and may vary spatially. Moreover, turbidites in the MST deposits are more frequent in the northern Japan Trench than in the central Japan Trench, suggesting that the occurrence of three types of large M8-class earthquakes in the northern Japan Trench might have contributed to the frequent occurrence of large PGAs. The Ulban terrane composed of a thick sedimentary series of Jurassic clastic deposits is located at the junction of the Mongol-Okhotsk and Sikhote-Alin orogenic belts. The results of studying the deposits assigned to the Middle Jurassic Elgon Formation are presented. The structure of the sedimentary succession and sedimentological features, which indicate sand-rich turbidite sedimentation in a setting of sandy lobe of turbidite fans or ramps, are considered and illustrated. The paleocurrent directions measured in outcrops and calculated using the anisotropy of the initial magnetic susceptibility suggest the transport of clastic material from western or southwestern sources. Cordilleran orogenic systems have complex, polycyclic magmatic and deformation histories, and the timescales and mechanisms of episodic orogenesis are still debated. Here, we show that detrital zircons (DZs) in terrigenous sediment from the late Pleistocene Amazon Fan, found at the terminus of the continent-scale Amazon River-fan system, record multiple, distinct modes of U-Pb crystallization ages and U-Th/He (ZHe) cooling ages that correlate to known South American magmatic and tectonic events. The youngest ZHe ages delineate two recent phases of Andean orogenesis; one in the Late Cretaceous – Paleogene, and another in the Miocene. Frequency analyses of the deep-time Phanerozoic record of DZ U-Pb and ZHe ages demonstrate a strong 72 Myr period in magmatic events, and 92 Myr and 57 Myr periods in crustal cooling. We interpret these results as evidence of changes in upper and lower plate coupling, associated with multiple episodes of magmatism and crustal deformation along the subduction-dominated western margin of South America. South American cordilleran orogenic systems have repeated complex magmatic and deformation histories. The sand bodies formed by braided fluvial fan deposits have a certain distinctiveness. They not only have the characteristics of fluvial facies sandbodies but also follow the distribution law of alluvial fan sand bodies. The variation law of sandbodies that are present along and perpendicular to a channel is relatively complex. Therefore, constraints in the modeling process of sand–mudstone facies of this type of reservoir are essential. This study selects the second member of the Shanxi Formation reservoir formed by a braided fluvial fan in the middle of Ordos Basin to perform sand–mudstone facies modeling. First, by studying the lithology and sedimentary structure of the area, the sedimentary characteristics and sand body distribution law of braided river fan are analyzed. Then, the original data points are analyzed, the variation function with high convergence is obtained, and the sand–mud facies model under the constraint of sedimentary facies is established using the random modeling method. Finally, the accuracy of the established random model is tested via single-well thinning, multi-well thinning, and random seed model similarity. The test results confirm that the distribution law of the sand and mudstone in the model is highly similar to that of the actual stratum. And it also conforms to the sedimentary model of braided fluvial fan. Alluvial fans are among the principal geomorphological features that have an influence on the development of human societies, particularly in arid regions. In view of the salience of these triangular-shaped deposits to environmental management, an accurate mapping of alluvial fans within a specific region could prove significantly advantageous. This study proposes a method for semi-automated detection of alluvial fans based on the analysis of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The proposed method is a novel Symmetry Model DEM (SMDEM), which extracts alluvial fans the pseudo-basin concept. This method is capable of accurate detection of alluvial fans and all their segmentations (i.e. lobes), apex, and toe when they are delimited by boundary drainage (lateral and toe drainage channels). The method was tested analyzing different environmental scenarios and was evaluated by comparing the output of the model with satellite data. The alluvial fans analyzed with the SMDEM model are the Lannemezan (12,303 km2), Xinhe (5572 km2), and Naien (1668 km2) fans, which are among the largest in Europe, China, and Iran, respectively. Hawaiian and other ocean island lava flows that reach the coastline can deposit significant volumes of lava in submarine deltas. The catastrophic collapse of these deltas represents one of the most significant, but least predictable, volcanic hazards at ocean islands. The volume of lava deposited below sea level in delta-forming eruptions and the mechanisms of delta construction and destruction are rarely documented. Here, we report on bathymetric surveys and ROV observations following the Kīlauea 2018 eruption that, along with a comparison to the deltas formed at Pu'u 'Ō'ō over the past decade, provide new insight into delta formation. Bathymetric differencing reveals that the 2018 deltas contain more than half of the total volume of lava erupted. In addition, we find that the 2018 deltas are comprised largely of coarse-grained volcanic breccias and intact lava flows, which contrast with those at Pu'u 'Ō'ō that contain a large fraction of fine-grained hyaloclastite. We attribute this difference to less efficient fragmentation of the 2018 'a'ā flows leading to fragmentation by collapse rather than hydrovolcanic explosion. We suggest a mechanistic model where the characteristic grain size influences the form and stability of the delta with fine grain size deltas (Pu'u 'Ō'ō) experiencing larger landslides with greater run-out supported by increased pore pressure and with coarse grain size deltas (Kīlauea 2018) experiencing smaller landslides that quickly stop as the pore pressure rapidly dissipates. Supercritical flows are ubiquitous in natural environments; however, there is rare 3D anatomy of their deposits. This study uses high-quality 3D seismic datasets from the world's largest submarine fan, Bengal Fan, to interpret 3D architectures and flow processes of Pliocene undulating bedforms that were related to supercritical flows. Bengal undulating bedforms as documented in this study were developed in unconfined settings, and are seismically imaged as strike-elongated, crescentic bedforms in plan view and as rhythmically undulating, upstream migrating, erosive, discontinuous reflections in section view. Their lee sides are overall 3 to 4 times steeper (0.28° to 1.19° in slope) and 3 to 4 times shorter (117 to 419 m in length) than their stoss flanks and were ascribed to faster (high flow velocities of 2.70 to 3.98 m/s) supercritical flows (Froude numbers of 1.53 to 2.27). Their stoss sides, in contrast, are overall 3 to 4 times gentler (0.12° to 0.27° in slope) and 3 to 4 times longer (410 to 1139 m in length) than their lee flanks and were related to slower (low velocities of 2.35 to 3.05 m/s) subcritical flows (Froude numbers of 0.58 to 0.97). Bengal wave-like features were, thus, created by supercritical-to-subcritical flow transformations through internal hydraulic jumps (i.e., cyclic steps). They have crests that are positive relative to the surrounding region of the seafloor, suggesting the predominant deposition of draping sediments associated with net-depositional cyclic steps. Turbidity currents forming Bengal wave-like features were, thus, dominated by deposition, resulting in net-depositional cyclic steps. Sandy deposits associated with Bengal net-depositional cyclic steps are imaged themselves as closely spaced, strike-elongated high RMS-attribute patches, thereby showing closely spaced, long and linear, strike-elongated distribution patterns. An analogy between submarine channels and fluvial rivers has existed for long, especially on the basis of planform and morphometry. Underlying this broad resemblance are the minute disparities that shape and control these systems. In order to observe and quantify the variations between submarine channels and subaerial rivers, we present a first-ever geomorphometric investigation of one single system, where the fluvial river is compared with its offshore counterpart from source-to-sink. With exhaustive data from the submarine fan, parameters like longitudinal profile, width, sinuosity, slope and planform of the Indus Fan channel-levee complex (CLC) are estimated and compared on the basis of the same parameters estimated for the fluvial Indus River. Our new data analyses offers key insights into the variable geomorphometric patterns prevalent from the source of the Indus River until the margins of the submarine Indus Fan. Channel width and sinuosity vary from high-to-low downstream in the submarine system and from low to high in the fluvial basin. Characteristic depositional features of either system are mutually exclusive. Longitudinal profiles of the submarine fan and the river basin do not conform—principally due to the difference in intensity of erosional and depositional processes active in both regions. These differences are primarily attributed to a single-point (canyon-fed) distributary flow and a multi-point (tributary-fed) cumulative flow source system, and density contrasts between river flows and turbidity currents. The Mannar Basin is a frontier failed rift basin between India and Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan part has an area exceeding 42,000 km2. Although the recent two gas discoveries have confirmed the existence of an active petroleum system in the Mannar Basin, a major portion of the basin is still poorly explored. This article summarized the progress of current exploration activities and the hydrocarbon potential of the Mannar Basin. This basin began to evolve since the Upper Jurassic and experienced two rifting events; an early Late Jurassic syn-rift phase associated with East–West Gondwana break up; and a later, earliest Cretaceous syn-rift phase associated with Antarctica separation from greater India around 142 Ma. Rifting was followed by a post-rift phase comprising a thermal sag period and an inversion period. Three potential source rocks intervals have been interpreted at Maastrichtian–Campanian, Albian–Aptian, and Late Jurassic stratigraphic levels. The basin modelling work has confirmed that (1) mature potential source rocks (mainly Type II) exist below the Maastrichtian–Campanian strata and (2) the best potential source rocks (mainly Type II) exist at Albian–Aptian stratigraphic levels. The Late Jurassic source rocks have more potential for gas, while other sources have potential for both oil and gas. According to basin modelling results, Maastrichtian–Campanian and Albian–Aptian source rocks reach the oil window in the present-day depocentre around 45 Ma and 80 Ma, respectively. The Late Jurassic source rocks (mainly Type III) reach the gas window around 112 Ma in the present-day depocentre. Five play levels were defined for the whole stratigraphic section of the Mannar Basin. Tertiary play level is dominated by submarine fans, mounds and rollover anticline like structures. The Upper Cretaceous play is dominated by forced-fold structures, intra-basalt turbidite sands, and sub-volcanic sand-rich systems. The Lower Cretaceous play is dominated by reefs and abrupt margin pinch outs. The Upper Jurassic play is dominated by abrupt margin pinch outs. The Basement play consists of weathered basement rocks. The main challenge of the Mannar Basin is imaging below the flood volcanic layer, which inhibits the penetration of seismic energy and results in low-quality seismic data. Therefore, hydrocarbon potential assessments have become a major challenge below the Upper Cretaceous. The interpretation shows that the basin has a low risk for the source and reservoir, and high risk for seal and traps. New exploration activity would unlock more potential areas for hydrocarbon accumulations. Artificial reservoirs play an important role in intercepting organic carbon (OC), which affects the carbon cycle of inland waters. However, limited by the methods of field observations, studies on the potential carbon sink of sediment in reservoirs are not accurate enough. In this study, we investigated OC accumulation in the Wujiangdu Reservoir (WJDR), a canyon reservoir located in a karst area of Southwest China, by coupling seismic survey data with physicochemical data of sediment cores. The results showed that irregular underwater topography resulted in spatial heterogeneity of the sediment deposition. The mean OC accumulation rate in the WJDR was 579.2 g C m−2 year−1, and the OC accumulation flux of the WJDR was 1.4 × 1010 g C year−1. δ13C values coupled with a mixing model indicated that the autochthonous OC ranged from 14.2 to 97.0% of the total OC in the sediment, with an average of 48.4%. The significantly positive relationship between autochthonous OC and TN indicated that the autochthonous OC generated in the reservoir was associated with nutrient input. The autochthonous OC accumulation flux was 6.6 × 109 g C year−1, which was equal to 2.3 times the carbon emission from the reservoir surface to the atmosphere as CO2-C, indicating that the autochthonous OC produced within the reservoir is a large carbon sink. An office drinking water cooler is converted to a humidity absorption device. The reservoir-type evaporator of the water cooler is separated, and a finned-tube evaporator is installed. A channel is installed at the inlet of the evaporator. A fan, a cool-mist humidifier, and a heater are installed inside this channel, where the amount of humidity and heat production can be adjusted. Several pressure gauges are installed at different locations of the cycle and monitor cycle performance while working. Pressure variations in different locations of the cycle are measured at various inlet air conditions. The MHI is defined as the ratio of condensation enthalpy to the total given heat. Changes of this index are evaluated by changing the input conditions. Results show that with increasing the air temperature, the condenser and evaporator pressure increases. Results of absorbed water in various MHIs show that with increasing this index, the amount of absorbed water increases. The graph of the absorbed water based on the MHI can be used to estimate the amount of water collected from this device under different climatic conditions. The amounts of collected water from this device for several different cities of Iran are presented. Results show that in high MHIs for a device with a quarter horsepower, the water production rate can reach to 250 g h−1. Six submarine canyons are distributed along the active margin off SW Taiwan. Using multi-beam bathymetric data and reflection seismic profiles to determine canyon head locations with respect to shelf edge, five of these canyons were classified into the following three types: 1. river-connected; 2. shelf-indenting; and 3. slope-confined. The remaining canyon was re-interpreted as a sea valley. Type 1 canyon, the Kaoping Canyon, is directly connected to the Kaoping River and supplied with terrestrial sediment. The canyon head segment tends to generate hyperpycnal flows during flooding, causing intense erosion of seafloor across the shelf and slope and forming a major sediment conduit. The Penghu, Kaohsiung and Fangliao canyons are of type 2 and incise into the shelf, forming a V-shaped head segment with abundant slumping features. Without continuous sediment supply from rivers, the canyon head receives sediments mainly from local slope failures on canyon walls and is unable to generate intense erosive sediment flows, resulting in an indentation into the shelf over a short distance. Oceanographic/hydrodynamic measurements close to the canyons are still not available for the region, despite they could shed light on the on-going sediment dynamics in the area. The Shoushan Canyon is a type 3 canyon characterized by limited sediment input from the Kaoping Shelf and weak canyon erosion, especially during sea-level highstands, resulting in a relatively straight canyon course confined to the upper slope. These submarine canyons share common regional tectonics, sea-level changes and climatic conditions. However, they evolved via local processes mainly controlled by sediment input directly related to head location, resulting in distinct morphologies and sizes. These canyons have remained active during the present-day sea-level highstand. Frequent earthquake and flooding events are the major triggering factors for sediment failures and generation of subsequent turbidity currents, resulting in substantial incision into the canyon. The results of the present study indicate that the SW Taiwan margin is characterized by canyons of type 1 and type 2 (n = 4) with only one type 3 canyon. This represents large percentages of type 1 and type 2 canyons compared to other regions of the world. Integrated geological and geophysical investigations were successfully performed for reservoir modeling in an oil field in the Jambi Province sub-basin, Sumatra, Indonesia. The objective of this study is to characterize the oil reservoir in terms of its petrophysical properties using a facies model that is based on an integrated geological and geophysical approach. The reservoir target of this study is located in the Air Benakat Formation, which is identified with a thickness of 3 to 20 m and is deposited in a depth range of 1300–1500 m. The reservoir modeling of Air Benakat Formation is carried out to open a new discovery for this field, since the comprehensive reservoir modeling has not been intensively performed. Structurally, the reservoir is segmented into three compartments by four main faults, and stratigraphic investigations revealed three prospect layers. In the present framework of the depositional environment, assessments of well log data included formation evaluations, well log data correlations and sequence stratigraphy, were performed to produce high-resolution features of vertical and lateral distributions. In addition, seismic data were interpreted to guide the structural model, and to effectively construct a three-dimensional (3D) geological framework of reservoir properties. The modeled reservoir shows that the reservoir is primarily considered a transition zone to a shallow marine deposit, which is specifically located in a submarine fan channel with a plain/moderately steep angle of its sedimentation base. Depositional environments are generally characterized by the potential paleocurrent direction within the channel axis from NE to SW, with respective agreement from larger scale porosity and net/gross models. As a high-precision survey method, seismic surveying has been increasingly applied to inland water research, although its application to artificial reservoirs has remained limited. As a special artificial water body, reservoirs have important effects on the fluvial transport of material from land to ocean, and inevitably have complex terrain which can complicate and distort the results of seismic surveys. Therefore, there are still some problems need to be resolved in the application of seismic surveys in reservoirs with complex terrain. For this study, the Dongfeng Reservoir located in the upper reaches of the Wujiang River was chosen as an example to test the seismic survey method. Our testing showed that (1) because of the complex underwater terrain, the signal-to-noise ratio of the echo signal in canyon reservoir is low, making it difficult to determine sediment layers thicknesses in some areas; and (2) due to the large spatial heterogeneity of sediment distribution, insufficient density of cross-sections can lead to inaccurate interpolation results. To improve the accuracy of calculations, a mathematical method was used. Ultimately, the total burial mass of sediment was estimated at 2.85 × 107 tons, and the average burial rates of total organic carbon, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen were estimated at 0.194, 0.011, and 0.014 g cm−2 year−1, respectively. These values were close to the results of previous studies and hydrographic station data, indicating that seismic survey can be a reliable and efficient method for the mapping of reservoirs. This study details sedimentary and compositional characteristics of the Middle to Late and Early Pleistocene calcareous clay units recovered from Site U1453 in the middle Bengal Fan. The sedimentary characteristics reveal that the calcareous clay units consist of calcareous hemipelagic muds and terrigenous hemiturbidite muds which represent intervening periods of hemipelagic sedimentation sensu stricto and a slow sedimentation from suspension clouds of low-concentration turbidity currents on the fan surface, otherwise dominated by sand and mud turbidites. Variations in compositions, such as organic and inorganic carbon contents and δ13C of bulk organic matters of the calcareous hemipelagic muds, indicate the glacial-interglacial climate forcing of carbonate dissolution, surface marine productivity, and sources of particulate organic matters in the middle Bengal Fan during the Middle to Late Pleistocene. The glacial-interglacial climate forcing on hemipelagic sedimentation seems to be much obscure during the Early Pleistocene because of dilution by terrigenous clay inputs. Grain-size distribution of bulk sediments suggests the presence of coarse foraminifer and finer nannofossil modes in the calcareous clay units and the size of dominant foraminifer species could have been finer in the Early Pleistocene. Multibeam bathymetry, coupled with seismic reflection profiles and sediment cores, was collected to understand the sediment process mechanisms for active onshore-offshore sediment transfer system from coastal erosion to nearshore transfer of sediment into a submarine channel and fan system. Savary Island in the northern Salish Sea of British Columbia, Canada, emerged immediately after deglaciation and became exposed to winter storms that began a continual modification of the island. Subsequent to coastal erosion, sediments are moved from the south side of the island, by strong tidal currents and longshore drift, to the island's north side. The mobilized sands are then entrained into and swept down submarine channels during gravity flows, likely a response to enhanced hydrodynamic tidal flow. Downslope progradation within the channels is primarily a result of downslope migrating submarine dunes that transfer sand to small submarine fans. Further transport beyond the channels into the deeper basin occurs via turbidity flows that have been active throughout the late Holocene. The prospect for Savary Island is grim, as this sediment transfer system will likely continue until the island disappears altogether. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sedimentological and petrographic studies of the Haymana Formation sandstones identify a submarine fan in the Haymana Basin. This study is confined to outcrop samples from the submarine-fan sandstones (the L1, L2, and L3 sections) and focuses on documentation of the petrographic characteristics of and depositional controls on reservoir properties of the Haymana Formation sandstones. Analysis of the lithology, texture, sedimentary structure, and petrography of the outcrop samples allows separation of the Haymana Formation sandstones into three distinct lithofacies, A, B, and C. Lithofacies A sandstones exhibit medium-coarse grain sizes (0.4–0.6 mm), moderate-good sorting, and subrounded grains. Lithofacies B sandstones exhibit fine grain sizes (0.2 mm), moderate sorting, and subrounded-subangular grains. Lithofacies C sandstones exhibit very fine grain sizes (0.112 mm) and nonreservoir facies. The main aim of this study is to document the diagenetic history and reservoir quality of the Haymana Formation sandstones. Lithofacies A has the best permeability, ranging from 80 to 120 mD, which can be related to the large grain size, the presence of cross-bedding, small amount of authigenic clays or cements in the pore throats, and enlarged pore apertures. In contrast, Lithofacies B sandstones contain variable yet small pore and pore-throat sizes, which are affected by abundant pore-filling authigenic clays, small grain sizes, and no dissolution. The permeability of the Lithofacies B sandstone ranges from 16 to 35 mD, which is lower than that of the Lithofacies A sandstone. Additionally, the Lithofacies B sandstones have small median pore-throat sizes (mean = 1.52 μm) and low porosities (average 4–6%), and the Lithofacies A sandstones have large pore-throat sizes (mean = 2.06–3 μm) and high porosities (average 20–25%), with most pore throats (50% or more) ranging between 1 and 4 μm. According to these data, the Lithofacies A sandstones show good reservoir characterisation. To date, significant hydrocarbon deposits have not been discovered in the Haymana Formation sandstones, although intensive exploratory work towards this end has been carried out in the Haymana Basin. According to this study, the proximal sandstones of the submarine-fan complex of the Haymana Formation may contain high-potential reservoirs in the Haymana Basin. In the basin, hydrocarbon is sourced from deep zones and may be capped by the proximal part of the Haymana Formation sandstones. According to this study, the Lithofacies B sandstones of the Haymana Formation are not suitable as diagenetic traps for hydrocarbon exploration in the Haymana Basin. Sedimentary features such as channel sands and submarine fan sequences are important hydrocarbon reservoirs throughout the world and may be interpreted from bed thickness trends and log motifs. The log motifs of four well logs were employed during this study to delineate reservoir architectural depositional features and environment, determine their lithological attributes, and evaluate reservoir properties. Gamma ray log signatures were utilized to infer depositional features, discriminate litho-units, and define depositional environment; resistivity log was employed to identify reservoir zones and formation fluids, while the combined density and neutron logs aided in the estimation of reservoir porosity and lithological typing. Results of analysis show seven laterally discontinuous reservoirs: one in Well X (X2), three in Well Y (Y1, Y2, Y3), and three in Well W (W1, W2, and W3) with thicknesses of 6.2 m, 19.2 m, 7.6 m, 78.7 m, 100.9 m, 38.1 m, and 41.6 m, respectively. Reservoirs architecture reveal distributary channel sands, submarine fan lobes, and deep tidal channel-fills deposited within the deep marine mud-rich N'kapa Formation. Average porosity, water saturation, and hydrocarbon saturation values of Well X and Well Y reservoirs are 20.8%, 30.8%, 69.2%, and 40.2%, 18.3%, 81.7%, respectively, indicating moderate-to-good reservoir quality. Also, the permeability values are moderate to good (74.89–12,584 md), except for Y3 and Well W reservoirs whose well log-derived permeabilities were unreliable due to their non-irreducible nature. Density-neutron crossplots indicate heterogeneous reservoir lithologies comprising of limestone, dolomite, and sandstones, with predominant calcite and subordinate dolomite as mineral matrix. Crossplot of water saturation and porosity revealed grain-size variation ranging from fine-grained to silty sediments with bulk volume water values suggesting Well X and Y reservoirs to be homogeneous and will produce water-free hydrocarbons, while Well W reservoirs are heterogeneous water-prone reservoirs. The alluvial fan of Lima is a complex landform, resulting from the sediment contributions of the Rimac River and the coalescence of the alluvial fans of the tributaries of the Rimac River. Depositional zones in the fan and changing main channel and distributary channels are influenced by the palaeo-relief inherited from a semi-arid climate and by the climatic changes. The upper sedimentary sequence of the fan, dominant on the Costa Verde, is of Upper Pleistocene—Holocene age. The sediments forming it are non-cohesive and are highly mobile during floods and earthquakes. The dominant features in this sequence, intertwined channel facies and laminar flows, were influenced by the Pleistocene—Holocene postglacial marine transgressions. A deeper understanding of the evolution of the Lima alluvial fan provides insight in to the fan's future evolution in the framework of active tectonics and climate change. The Lima fan is an area with high human population density and is subjected to floods and debris flows resulting in subsequent loss of human life and properties. Therefore, the improved understanding of the fan's evolution, resulting from this study, will contribute to a better definition of high risk areas of potential human disaster caused by these natural processes. Cyclic-fan-development, presently controlled by glacial sea level lows and palaeo-topography will continue regardless of human intervention in attempts to prevent natural disasters in Lima. Abstract: The deposits of the Imlekin Formation of the Upper Pegtymel depression were formed in the southern margin of the Chukotka Terrane synchronously with accretion of the Kulpolney island arc to the Chukotka-Arctic Alaska microplate. The sedimentological structural features of the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous sections indicate their accumulation within various parts of submarine fans of a shallow marine basin. The submarine slump origin of the boulder-pebble (tillite-like) conglomerates is substantiated. The petrographic, geochemical, and geochronological methods identified two dominant provenances: Triassic clastic rocks and Volgian suprasubduction volcanic rocks. The Middle Volgian-Early Berriasian age of the Imlekin Formation is specified. The geodynamic model proposed explains the change of the sources and direction of the sediment transport in the Volgian. Submarine fans and turbidite systems are important and sensitive features located offshore from river deltas that archive tectonic events, regional climate, sea level variations and erosional process. Very little is known about the sedimentary structure of the 1800 km long and 400 km wide Mozambique Fan, which is fed by the Zambezi and spreads out into the Mozambique Channel. New multichannel seismic profiles in the Mozambique Basin reveal multiple feeder systems of the upper fan that have been active concurrently or consecutively since Late Cretaceous. We identify two buried, ancient turbidite systems off Mozambique in addition to the previously known Zambezi-Channel system and another hypothesized active system. The oldest part of the upper fan, located north of the present-day mouth of the Zambezi, was active from Late Cretaceous to Eocene times. Regional uplift caused an increased sediment flux that continued until Eocene times, allowing the fan to migrate southwards under the influence of bottom currents. Following the mid-Oligocene marine regression, the Beira High Channel-levee complex fed the Mozambique Fan from the southwest until Miocene times, reworking sediments from the shelf and continental slope into the distal abyssal fan. Since the Miocene, sediments have bypassed the shelf and upper fan region through the Zambezi Valley system directly into the Zambezi Channel. The burial history and sedimentation rate of the middle part of the Bengal Fan, which is one of the world's largest submarine fan, was reproduced using the sedimentary basin modeling software, SEDPAK. Modeling of the sedimentation rates, subsidence rates, and burial history of the Bengal Fan suggests three stages of basin evolution: Stage I (4.5-1.81 Ma), Stage II (1.81-0.79 Ma), and Stage III (0.79-0 Ma). Stage I was characterized by low sedimentation and subsidence rates, whereas the highest sedimentation and rapid subsidence occurred during Stage II. During Stage III, high sedimentation and the slowest rate of subsidence occurred. Biogenic gas is the typical hydrocarbon found in the study area. Based on the general features of the petroleum system, the generation and migration of the biogenic gas is interpreted to have occurred immediately after the deposition of Unit 2. The modeling results also support the generation and preservation of biogenic gas rather than thermogenic gas. Thermal maturity analysis established that the TTI (time-temperature index) and the thermogenic hydrocarbon potential in the study area are low because of relatively low temperatures and a short burial. Deep sea channel systems are recognized in most submarine fans worldwide as well as in the geological record. The Indus Fan is the second largest modern submarine fan, having a well-developed active canyon and deep sea channel system. Previous studies from the upper Indus Fan have reported several active channel systems. In the present study, deep sea channel systems were identified within the middle Indus Fan using high resolution multibeam bathymetric data. Prominent morphological features within the survey block include the Raman Seamount and Laxmi Ridge. The origin of the newly discovered channels in the middle fan has been inferred using medium resolution satellite bathymetry data. Interpretation of new data shows that the highly sinuous deep sea channel systems also extend to the east of Laxmi Ridge, as well as to the west of Laxmi Ridge, as previously reported. A decrease in sinuosity southward can be attributed to the morphological constraints imposed by the elevated features. These findings have significance in determining the pathways for active sediment transport systems, as well as their source characterization. The geometry suggests a series of punctuated avulsion events leading to the present array of disconnected channels. Such channels have affected the Laxmi Basin since the Pliocene and are responsible for reworking older fan sediments, resulting in loss of the original erosional signature supplied from the river mouth. This implies that distal fan sediments have experienced significant signal shredding and may not represent the erosion and weathering conditions within the onshore basin at the time of sedimentation. Two fields of prodeltaic undulations located off the Guadalfeo River were studied by integrating surficial (multibeam bathymetry, backscatter, sediment samples) and sub-surface (seismic profiles, sediment cores) data. Our main motivation was to analyze the along- and across-shelf variability of the seafloor undulations, in order to obtain useful insights into genetic mechanisms. A geostatistical analysis was performed, based on the determination of characteristic parameters and derived relationships. The undulations occur over a concave-upward surface which shows a seaward-decreasing slope. Most of the undulations are symmetrical to asymmetrically-oriented toward the coast. Two main fields are correlated with the present and previous river mouths. The western field, associated with the modern river mouth, is highly symmetrical, with the higher undulations in an axial position and diminishing the width/height relationship both laterally and downslope. In contrast, the eastern field, associated with an historic river mouth, shows lower-amplitude undulations, the width/height changes are less pronounced, and the undulations are more elongated. The two undulation fields exhibit subseafloor reflections that are subparallel to the seafloor, with peaks that migrate upslope upward in the stratigraphic column and which appear to correlate with coarse-grained layers. We support the contention that prodeltaic undulations off the Guadalfeo River should be regarded as sediment waves. Assuming a sediment-wave process, a strong normal-to-contour sediment flows with a riverine origin (e.g., hyperpycnal flows) may have been active during undulation generation. Both morphometric parameters of the river basin and estimations of sediment concentration during exceptional flood events are in agreement with an episodic activity of high freshwater discharges. Most of the geomorphic parameters and stratigraphic observations indicate a change of sediment supply conditions related to the shift in river mouth position, attributed to a temporal change in the activity of hyperpycnal flows. The Nile delta sedimentation constitutes a continuous high-resolution record of Ethiopian African monsoon (EAM) regime intensity. Multi-proxy analyses performed on hemipelagic sediments deposited on the Nile deep-sea fan allow the quantification of the Saharan aeolian dust and the Blue/White Nile River suspended matter frequency fluctuations during the last 21,000 years. The radiogenic strontium and neodymium isotopes, clay mineralogy, elemental composition and preliminary palynological analyses reveal large changes in source components, oscillating between a dominant aeolian Saharan contribution during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the late Holocene (~4,000-2,000 years), a dominant Blue/Atbara Nile River contribution during the early Holocene (15,000-8,000 years) and a probable White Nile River contribution during the middle Holocene (8,000-4,000 years). The following main features are highlighted: (1) The rapid shift from the LGM arid conditions to the African Humid Period (AHP) started at about 15,000 years. The AHP extends until 8,000 years, and we suggest that the EAM maximum between 15,000 and 8,000 years is responsible for a larger Blue/Atbara Nile sediment load and freshwater input into the eastern Mediterranean Sea. (2) The transition between the AHP and the arid late Holocene is gradual and occurs in two main phases between 8,400-6,500 years and 6,500-3,200 years. We suggest that the main rain belt shifted southward from 8,000 to ~4,000 years and was responsible for progressively reduced sediment load and freshwater input into the eastern Mediterranean Sea. (3) The aridification along the Nile catchments occurred from ~4,000 to 2,000 years. This dry period, which culminates at 3,200 year, seems to coincide with a re-establishment of increased oceanic primary productivity in the western Mediterranean Sea. Such a pattern imposes a large and rapid northward shift of the rain belt over the Ethiopian highlands (5-15°N) since 15,000 years. Precipitation over Ethiopia increased from 15,000 to 8,000 years. It was followed by a gradual southward shift of the rain belt over the equator from 8,000 to 4,000 years and finally a large shift of the rain belt south the equator between 4,000 and 2,000 years inducing North African aridification. We postulate that the decrease in thermohaline water Mediterranean circulation could be part of a response to huge volumes of freshwater delivered principally by the Nile River from 15,000 to 8,000 years in the eastern Mediterranean. The gravity flow deposit were mainly developed in the lowstand systems tract (LST) of the first member of Upper Miocene Huangliu Formation (E hl) in Dongfang area, Yinggehai Basin, has become a valuable target for gas exploration and production. The gravity flow sedimentary characteristics of lithofacies associations, sedimentary texture, seismic facies and logging facies were described in detail on the basis of integrated analysis of cores, logging and seismic data. The sedimentary microfacies types composed of neritic sandbar, continental shelf mud, main channel, bifurcated or cross-cutting distributary channel, overspill, and natural levee are revealed under the constraint of high resolution sequence stratigraphic framework in the E hl. The gravity flow deposit system in the LST is divided into three evolution stages corresponding to periods of three parasequence sets. The gravity flow deposit was induced in the early LST, expanded rapidly in the middle LST and decreased slightly in the late LST. But its developing scale decreased sharply in the transgression systems tract (TST) and finally vanished in the highstand systems tract (HST). This spatial evolution rule is constrained by the integrated function of sediments supply of the Vietnam Blue River in the LST, the development of local gradient change in sea floor (micro-topography, i.e., flexure slope break), and the fall in relative sea level. On the basics of the deep study of the coupling relationship among the three main control factors, the sedimentary model is established as an optimal component of 'source-channel-sink' for shallow marine turbidite submarine fan. On the passive margin of the Nile deep-sea fan, the active Cheops mud volcano (MV; ca. 1,500 m diameter, ~20-30 m above seafloor, 3,010-3,020 m water depth) comprises a crater lake with hot (up to ca. 42 °C) methane-rich muddy brines in places overflowing down the MV flanks. During the Medeco2 cruise in fall 2007, ROV dives enabled detailed sampling of the brine fluid, bottom lake sediments at ca. 450 m lake depth, sub-surface sediments from the MV flanks, and carbonate crusts at the MV foot. Based on mineralogical, elemental and stable isotope analyses, this study aims at exploring the origin of the brine fluid and the key biogeochemical processes controlling the formation of these deep-sea authigenic carbonates. In addition to their patchy occurrence in crusts outcropping at the seafloor, authigenic carbonates occur as small concretions disseminated within sub-seafloor sediments, as well as in the bottom sediments and muddy brine of the crater lake. Aragonite and Mg-calcite dominate in the carbonate crusts and in sub-seafloor concretions at the MV foot, whereas Mg-calcite, dolomite and ankerite dominate in the muddy brine lake and in sub-seafloor concretions near the crater rim. The carbonate crusts and sub-seafloor concretions at the MV foot precipitated in isotopic equilibrium with bottom seawater temperature; their low δC values (-42.6 to -24.5‰) indicate that anaerobic oxidation of methane was the main driver of carbonate precipitation. By contrast, carbonates from the muddy lake brine, bottom lake concretions and crater rim concretions display much higher δC (up to -5.2‰) and low δO values (down to -2.8‰); this is consistent with their formation in warm fluids of deep origin characterized by C-rich CO and, as confirmed by independent evidence, slightly higher heavy rare earth element signatures, the main driver of carbonate precipitation being methanogenesis. Moreover, the benthic activity within the seafloor sediment enhances aerobic oxidation of methane and of sulphide that promotes carbonate dissolution and gypsum precipitation. These findings imply that the coupling of carbon and sulphur microbial reactions represents the major link for the transfer of elements and for carbon isotope fractionation between fluids and authigenic minerals. A typical feature of the Precambrian complexes of the Kokshetau, Ishkeolmess, Erementau-Niyaz, and Aktau-Dzhungaria massifs of Northern and Central Kazakhstan is the presence of the end Mesoproterozoic-beginning of the Neoproterozoic quartzite-schist sequences in these sections. The lower and upper parts of these sequences are mostly composed of schists with interlayers of quartzites and marbles and of quartzitic sandstones, respectively. It is suggested that the quartzite-schist sequences represent the sub-platform cover of a large continental block and were formed in the regressive basin with widely abundant facies of submarine deltas and a littoral shoal. The presence of horizons and the lenses enriched in zircon-rutile heavy concentrate with the amount of accessory minerals of 10-70% characterizes the quartzite-schist sections of the Kokshetau and Erementau-Niyaz massifs. The U-Pb age of zircons from one such locality in the central part of the Erementau-Niyaz massif was analyzed by LA-ICP-MS. The Concordia ages of zircons are in the intervals 1041 ± 13-1519 ± 14, 1623 ± 14-1931 ± 14, and 2691 ± 14-2746 ± 14 Ma. One age was 2850 ± 14 Ma. The age distribution is characterized by clear peaks of 1.08, 1.20. 1.34, 1.46, 1.65, 1.89, and 2.70 Ga and weak peaks of 1.13 and 1.68 Ga. The age of the majority of zircons ranges from 1309 ± 14 to 1519 ± 14 Ma. Our data indicate that mostly Neoproterozoic rocks with a subordinate role of Paleoproterozoic and Neoarchean complexes served the feeding sources for the quartzite-schist sequence of the Erementau-Niyaz massif. The Mesoproterozoic and Paleoproterozoic events identified for the detrital zircons of the Erementau-Niyaz massif are completely manifested only in Laurentia. In the first approximation, these events coincide with the assembly and breakup of the Columbia/Nuna supercontinent (∼1650-1580 and 1450-1380 Ma) and assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent (1300-900 Ma). The provenance of Eocene-Oligocene turbidites from the Pindos Foreland Basin, SW Greece, has been constrained using petrographical and geochemical techniques. Modal petrographic analysis of the studied sandstones shows that the source area comprises sedimentary, metamorphic, and plutonic igneous rocks deposited in a recycled orogenic environment and in magmatic arc province. The relative proportions of the detrital components indicate that the Late Eocene-Early Oligocene sandstones of West Peloponnesus are quartz-rich and were primarily derived from granitic and metamorphic basement rocks typically of a tectonically active area. Major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) concentrations in both sandstones and mudstones complement the petrographical data indicating an active continental margin/continental island arc signature. All the samples are light REE, enriched relative to heavy REE (HREE), with flat HREE pattern and positive Eu anomalies, suggesting that the processes of intra-crustal differentiation (involving plagioclase fractionation) were not of great importance. Submarine canyons and associated submarine fans are in some cases located at the end of a littoral cell where they act as conduits for the transfer of eroded terrigenous sediments to the marine environment. Such fans are generally found in deep-water settings at >500 m water depth. Offshore the Moisie River Delta (NW Gulf of St. Lawrence, Eastern Canada), high-resolution multibeam bathymetry and seismic data led to the discovery of an unusually shallow submarine fan (≤60 m) located at the end of a littoral cell. Sediment is transported westward on the shallow coastal shelf, as demonstrated by the downcurrent displacement of oblique nearshore sandbars where the shelf narrows to less than 1 km. The steep slope near the end of the littoral cell is incised by a channel that feeds a submarine fan composed of smaller channels and depositional lobes. According to existing Holocene evolution models for the region, the fan formed within the last 5,000 years. Its evolution is largely due to the transport of sediment by longshore drift. Multibeam echosounder and seismic data also reveal that the gravity-driven accretion of the submarine fan is characterized mainly by two processes, i.e., frequent small-scale, downslope migration of sandwaves on the slope, and more episodic slumping/turbidity-current activity in the deeper part of the fan. This study documents that, besides their common deep-water location, smaller-scale submarine fans can occur also in very shallow water, implying that they could be more frequent than previously thought both in modern environments and in the rock record. Statistical analysis of facies clustering in deep-water successions in combination with their facies characteristics has been applied to interpretation of the depositional sub-environment of two selected sedimentary sequences, which expose the Upper Eocene Kýčera Member of the Zlín Formation of the Rača Unit and the Middle Eocene-Lower Oligocene Racibor Formation of the Krynica (Oravská Magura) Unit of the Magura Zone of the Outer Western Carpathians. Clustering patterns of three bed-by-bed variables, namely coarse division thickness, coarse division thickness percentages, and basal grain size were analyzed. Apart from coarse division thickness percentages of the Kýčera Member section, all the datasets passed the Hurst K test and, according to their facies characteristics, revealed the lobe-interlobe motif. Although the employment of this technique confirmed the advantages of its practical utilization in interpretation of submarine fan environments, its widespread application is limited to good exposures where adequate quantity and quality of data is available. The Nile Deep-Sea Fan (NDSF) is located on the passive continental margin off Egypt and is characterized by the occurrence of active fluid seepage such as brine lakes, pockmarks and mud volcanoes. This study characterizes the structure of faunal assemblages of such active seepage systems of the NDSF. Benthic communities associated with reduced, sulphidic microhabitats such as sediments and carbonate crusts were sampled by remotely operated vehicles during two cruises in 2006 (BIONIL) and 2007 (MEDECO). Environmental conditions and biological factors including family-level faunal composition, density and diversity were measured at local and regional scales. Significant differences were detected at different spatial scales: (1) the fauna of reduced habitats differed substantially in activity, diversity and biomass from the non-seep environment at similar water depth, (2) cold seep microhabitats showed differences in community structure and composition related to substratum type as well as to the intensity and location of fluid emissions. Numerous marine invertebrates form endosymbiotic relationships with dinoflagellates in the genus Symbiodinium. However, few studies have examined the fine-scale population structure of these symbionts. Here, we describe the genetic structure of Symbiodinium type “B1/B184” inhabiting the gorgonian Gorgonia ventalina along the Florida Keys. Six polymorphic microsatellite loci were utilized to examine 16 populations along the Upper, Middle, and Lower Keys spanning a range of ~200 km. Multiple statistical tests detected significant differentiation in 54–92% of the 120 possible pairwise comparisons between localities, suggesting low levels of gene flow in these dinoflagellates. In general, populations clustered by geographic region and/or reefs in close proximity. Some of the sharpest population differentiation was detected between Symbiodinium from deep and shallow sites on the same reef. In spite of the high degree of population structure, alleles and genotypes were shared among localities, indicating some connectivity between Symbiodinium populations associated with G. ventalina. Multibeam sonar data, acoustic sub-bottom profiles and box cores were used to study the activity of submarine canyons and fans near the city of Les Escoumins, on the North Shore of the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary (Eastern Canada). The multibeam data were used to generate a high-resolution digital terrain model that reveals the presence of a large number of canyons and fans along the northern slopes of the Laurentian Channel. This paper focuses on two of the larger canyons, and their associated submarine fans. The sub-bottom profiles on the fans reveal high-amplitude reflections at the sediment/water interface and near the seafloor surface, indicating the occurrence of layers of coarse material. A turbidite was observed in a box core sampled in one of the fans, confirming the nature of the coarse layer. Geophysical and sedimentological data indicate that the canyons and fans play an important role in transferring coastal sandy sediments to the deeper marine environments by longshore drift-initiated turbidity flows, and thereby contribute to the negative sediment budget along the coast. The morphology of the canyons indicates that they were produced by a combination of erosive turbidity flows and retrogressive failures. The two box cores sampled on the fans reveal a recent (~last 60 years) quasi-exponential increase in sand content near the surface of the cores, possibly reflecting recent deforestation and/or increased coastal erosion. Abstract  Two highly active mud volcanoes located in 990–1,265 m water depths were mapped on the northern Egyptian continental slope during the BIONIL expedition of R/V Meteor in October 2006. High-resolution swath bathymetry and backscatter imagery were acquired with an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV)-mounted multibeam echosounder, operating at a frequency of 200 kHz. Data allowed for the construction of ~1 m pixel bathymetry and backscatter maps. The newly produced maps provide details of the seabed morphology and texture, and insights into the formation of the two mud volcanoes. They also contain key indicators on the distribution of seepage and its tectonic control. The acquisition of high-resolution seafloor bathymetry and acoustic imagery maps with an AUV-mounted multibeam echosounder fills the gap in spatial scale between conventional multibeam data collected from a surface vessel and in situ video observations made from a manned submersible or a remotely operating vehicle. Caribbean corals, including sea fans (Gorgonia spp.), are being affected by severe and apparently new diseases. In the case of sea fans, the pathogen is reported to be the fungus Aspergillus sydowii, and the disease is named aspergillosis. In order to understand coral diseases and pathogens, knowledge of the microbes associated with healthy corals is also necessary. In this study the fungal community of healthy Gorgonia ventalina colonies was contrasted with that of diseased colonies. In addition, the fungal community of healthy and diseased tissue within colonies with aspergillosis was contrasted. Fungi were isolated from healthy and diseased fans from 15 reefs around Puerto Rico, and identified by sequencing the nuclear ribosomal ITS region and by morphology. Thirty fungal species belonging to 15 genera were isolated from 203 G. ventalina colonies. Penicillum and Aspergillus were the most common genera isolated from both healthy and diseased fans. However, the fungal community of healthy fans was distinct and more diverse than that of diseased ones. Within diseased fans, fungal communities from diseased tissues were distinct and more diverse than from healthy tissue. The reduction of fungi in diseased colonies may occur prior to infection due to environmental changes affecting the host, or after infection due to increase in dominance of the pathogen, or because of host responses to infection. Data also indicate that the fungal community of an entire sea fan colony is affected even when only a small portion of the colony suVers from aspergillosis. The impact of a disturbance is normally measured in terms of its effects on adult mortality, whilst the less obvious impact on reproductive biology is generally ignored. Although previous studies have contributed to understanding the effects of a mass mortality of gorgonians in 1999 at NW Mediterranean Sea, none of them have considered its impact on reproduction. The goal of this study was to determine the impact of mass mortality events on the reproduction of the gorgonian Paramuricea clavata, and examine the effect of the damage 1 year (June 2000) and 2 years (June 2001) after the event. The reproductive parameters of female colonies were more affected than those of males. In female colonies that were moderately or severely damaged, the proportion of fertile polyps decreased by about 22–35%, whilst in the worst affected males there was only a 12% decrease. Female colonies showed a progressive decrease in gonadal biomass with increasing damage to a maximum reduction of 73–75% of oocyte production observed in colonies with >33% injury. In contrast, in males, the gonadal biomass decreased rapidly for colonies with 5% of injured surface, with a reduction in spermary production of 49–64%. The same pattern of decrease in gonadal output compared to the extent of the injury was observed in 2001, two years after the mass mortality event. This indicated that the observed pattern was a response to the extent of the injury rather than a direct effect of the event. These severe effects on the reproduction of the red gorgonian species have implications for the recovery of affected populations in the long-term. Knowledge of host range and mechanisms of disease resistance is fundamental to predicting impacts and spread of marine diseases. Prevalence of signs of aspergillosis, caused by the terrestrial fungus Aspergillus sydowii, was assessed in the Yucatan among three species of sea fan: Gorgonia ventalina, G. cf. mariae, and G. flabellum. The Yucatan is unusual in that ranges of all three sea fan species overlap at many sites along a cline of increasing depth, allowing us to evaluate potential causes of differing prevalence among species. Signs of aspergillosis were observed in all the three species. However, the prevalence of infection in G. cf. mariae, a deep-water species, was consistently low even at sites where G. ventalina was common and had moderate levels of infection. Because G. cf. mariae is a relatively small-stature sea fan, we compared the prevalence of signs in G. cf. mariae to a subset of comparatively sized G. ventalina. G. ventalina had a significantly higher prevalence of aspergillosis, indicating that size does not explain the lower prevalence in G. cf. mariae. Prevalence of disease signs on the shallow-water G. flabellum was also significantly higher than G. cf. mariae, but did not differ from G. ventalina. To test the hypothesis that higher chemical resistance accounts for the low prevalence of disease in G. cf. mariae, we measured the response of A. sydowii in culture to antifungal extracts from each sea fan species. Significantly lower fungal growth rates on extracts of G. cf. mariae than G. ventalina support the hypothesis that G. cf. mariae is more chemically resistant to aspergillosis. When comparing sea fan disease across different regions of the Yucatan, we detected significantly higher prevalence in G. ventalina near Akumal than further north near Cozumel and Puerto Morelos. In Akumal, there was a strong positive correlation between sea fan size and disease, with the largest fans showing the highest prevalence and severity in all three species. Very high-frequency marine multichannel seismic reflection data generated by small-volume air- or waterguns allow detailed, high-resolution studies of sedimentary structures of the order of one to few metres wavelength. The high-frequency content, however, requires (1) a very exact knowledge of the source and receiver positions, and (2) the development of data processing methods which take this exact geometry into account. Static corrections are crucial for the quality of very high-frequency stacked data because static shifts caused by variations of the source and streamer depths are of the order of half to one dominant wavelength, so that they can lead to destructive interference during stacking of CDP sorted traces. As common surface-consistent residual static correction methods developed for land seismic data require fixed shot and receiver locations two simple and fast techniques have been developed for marine seismic data with moving sources and receivers to correct such static shifts. The first method – called CDP static correction method – is based on a simultaneous recording of Parasound sediment echosounder and multichannel seismic reflection data. It compares the depth information derived from the first arrivals of both data sets to calculate static correction time shifts for each seismic channel relative to the Parasound water depths. The second method – called average static correction method – utilises the fact that the streamer depth is mainly controlled by bird units, which keep the streamer in a predefined depth at certain increments but do not prevent the streamer from being slightly buoyant in-between. In case of calm weather conditions these streamer bendings mainly contribute to the overall static time shifts, whereas depth variations of the source are negligible. Hence, mean static correction time shifts are calculated for each channel by averaging the depth values determined at each geophone group position for several subsequent shots. Application of both methods to data of a high-resolution seismic survey of channel-levee systems on the Bengal Fan shows that the quality of the stacked section can be improved significantly compared to stacking results achieved without preceding static corrections. The optimised records show sedimentary features in great detail, that are not visible without static corrections. Limitations only result from the sea floor topography. The CDP static correction method generally provides more coherent reflections than the average static correction method but can only be applied in areas with rather flat sea floor, where no diffraction hyperbolae occur. In contrast, the average static correction method can also be used in regions with rough morphology, but the coherency of reflections is slightly reduced compared to the results of the CDP static correction method.
