Key message: Oak species displayed high interspecific functional trait variation. The resource use strategy among oaks both at the above and belowground organs was guided by the fast-slow continuum. Plant functional ecology has focused on the study of functional strategies and general patterns of trait covariation. Mostly, studies intend to elucidate how plants cope with resource capture both at the above and belowground organs and to understand how the capacity for resource gain relates with the species distribution. American oaks are an interesting and important tree clade, they radiated into diverse environments outside temperate regions implying the development of adaptations to persist under different environmental regimes. Therefore, we explored patterns of differentiation in functional traits related with the capacity for resource use in 3-month seedlings of ten Mexican oak species representative from semiarid, temperate and subtropical montane regions. We examined the fast–slow trade-off and its importance in species differentiation on both above and belowground organs. Additionally, we investigated how resource acquisition strategy of the species was related with the environmental conditions experienced in their habitats. We found a significant differentiation in both above and belowground traits, and in both cases oak species segregated along the fast–slow continuum. We found only a few significant trait-by-trait relationships, implying a weak coordination among aerial and subterranean organs. Additionally, species from sites with higher precipitation seasonality had a higher root growth, and species from humid sites had larger leaves. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of bladder lesions diagnosed during transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), to identify the associated risk factors, and to correlate the macroscopic descriptions with the pathological findings. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective case series conducted at a hospital in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. We reviewed the medical and surgical records of patients who underwent TURP between January 2012 and December 2017. Results: The final sample comprised 513 patients, with a mean age of 70.8 years. Bladder lesions were identified during TURP in 109 (21.2%) of the patients, and 90 of those lesions were submitted for pathological examination. The most common macroscopic finding was bullous edema, which was seen in 57 (63.3%) of the 90 lesions examined. The pathological analysis revealed chronic cystitis in 61 lesions (67.8%) and malignant lesions in 16 (17.8%). Of the 57 lesions described as bullous edema, 5 (8.8%) were found to be malignant. Conclusions: Alterations in the bladder mucosa appear to be more common among elderly patients who use an indwelling urinary catheter for a prolonged period and among patients with recurrent urinary tract infections. In addition, the risk of a bladder lesion being malignant is apparently higher in current and former smokers than in never smokers. Our findings suggest that at-risk patients should undergo biopsy or resection of incidental bladder lesions even if those lesions seem to be benign, due to the low level of agreement between the visual analysis and the pathological examination. Alien predators exert severe effects on island ecosystems, and their eradication from island habitats may therefore be necessary to conserve the native biota. Efforts are being made to eradicate the American mink ( Neovison vison) from the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park (NW Spain), a protected site inhabited by vulnerable island fauna. We applied a molecular genetic approach to elucidate the source of the invaders and to evaluate the effectiveness of the trapping programme. We collected mink scats in the field and obtained tissue samples from culled mink. Populations of feral mink were known to be present in coastal areas close to the National Park archipelagos in the 1980-1990s. However, the molecular findings suggest that these populations were not the main source of the mink populations that colonized the islands during the 2000s. Recent releases from farms directly on to the islands are a more likely source of these invaders. Genetic analysis suggested that mink reproduced successfully on the islands and were relatively isolated from other mainland populations. The findings also suggest that most of the culled mink were juveniles, probably because it was more difficult to catch adults. Since mink are short-lived animals, it seems that eradication may also be achieved when a large proportion of juveniles are culled in isolated and small populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Non-native invasive species are one of the most serious threats to biodiversity and are considered the leading cause of extinction of several bird taxa, including seabirds. Introduced American mink ( Neovison vison) have caused devastating effects on island populations of several colonial seabird species. In this study, we investigated the direct and indirect effects of mink on population dynamics and reproductive success of European shags ( Phalacrocorax aristotelis) breeding at Illas Cíes, one of the most important colonies of the species in Southern Europe. A severe episode of mink predation on adult shags occurred in the year when mink arrived in the breeding colonies, though the number of shags killed dropped abruptly in subsequent years. We found that, after the arrival of mink, shags moved to nest-sites that afforded greater protection from carnivores. This shift caused a substantial reduction in mortality by predation, but probably entailed a cost in terms of their reproductive success because sites with lower levels of predation risk showed a higher risk of egg loss by nest flooding due to poorer drainage. Coccidioidomycosis is a respiratory fungal infection with occasional systemic dissemination. The disseminated coccidioidomycosis is considered a multifaceted disease. In medicine, disseminated coccidioidomycosis is included within a group of infectious diseases that have been referred as the great imitators. In many cases, malignancies are included in the presumptive diagnosis. In veterinary medicine, disseminated coccidioidomycosis is common in dogs. Nonetheless, despite of being a diagnostic dilemma, disseminated coccidioidomycosis is underestimated and frequently not included into differentials, even in endemic zones. Herein, we describe three cases of granulomatous inflammation caused by Coccidioides spp. which were masquerading malignancies in dogs (0.39 %). The presumptive diagnoses in these cases were osteosarcoma, lymphoma and neurofibroma, respectively. A PCR assay employing tissues in paraffin blocks resulted positive for C. posadasii in one of these cases. The number of large feedlot operations, similar to that of USA and Canada, has notably increased in Mexico in the last three decades. Clinical and laboratory diagnoses of neurological diseases in feedlot cattle are crucial in Mexico and Central America because of the high incidence of bovine paralytic rabies (BPR). Because of its zoonotic potential, BPR must be promptly diagnosed and differentiated from other bovine neurological diseases such as thrombotic meningoencephalitis (TME), polioencephalomalacia (PEM) and botulism. More recently, BPR and botulism have been diagnosed with increasing frequency in Mexican feedlots. Neither BPR nor botulism has relevant gross lesions, thus post-mortem diagnosis without laboratory support is impossible. Herein, we describe five outbreaks of neurological diseases in Mexican feedlots in which BPR, botulism and PEM were diagnosed either independently or in combination. A diagram illustrating the most conspicuous pathologic findings and ancillary laboratory test required to confirm the diagnoses of these neurological diseases in feedlot cattle is proposed. Introduction: Continuous erythropoietin receptor activator (C.E.R.A.) effectively enables anemia control in patients with chronic kidney disease, but little information is available in renal transplant recipients. The authors aimed to evaluate the effect of C.E.R.A. under clinical practice conditions on anemia control in renal transplant recipients. Methods: This was a multicenter, retrospective, observational study carried out in adult renal transplant patients in the immediate posttransplant period and at late posttransplant period receiving C.E.R.A. in clinical practice. Patients' data were retrieved from their medical charts at baseline and months 1, 3, and 6. Results: A total of 318 evaluable patients were enrolled into the study: 32 in the immediate posttransplant period and 286 at late posttransplant period (erythropoiesisstimulating agent [ESA]-naïve, n = 44; converting from other ESAs, n = 242). Patients in the immediate posttransplant period experienced a significant increase in hemoglobin (Hb) levels from baseline to month 1 (9.9±1.5 g/dL vs. 11.5±1.4 g/dL; P< 0.001). ESA-naïve patients showed increasing mean Hb levels from baseline to month 6 (10.1±0.7 g/dL vs. 11.7±1.0 g/dL; P < 0.001) and 94.7% achieved Hb ≥11 g/dL during the study. In patients converted from other ESAs, the percentage of patients with Hb between 11-13 g/dL was maintained from baseline to month 6 with no significant differences (61.0% vs. 62.4%). Mean monthly doses of C.E.R.A. at baseline were 134.4±56.4 μg, 81.3±28.1 μg, and 93.0±44.2 μg in immediate posttransplant, ESA-naïve, and converted patients, respectively. C.E.R.A. was well tolerated. Conclusion: C.E.R.A. enables anemia control in renal transplant recipients, allowing target Hb levels to be achieved and maintained with doses even below those described in the Summary of Product Characteristics. The association of giardiasis with the malabsorption of zinc remains controversial. This study investigated changes in serum zinc levels in Giardia-infected mice subjected to different dietary zinc regimens. Thirty-five mice (strain CH/HJ) were randomly categorized into two groups. The first group was inoculated with 5 × 10 Giardia trophozoites ( n = 18), and the second group remained Giardia free ( n = 17). Each group ( Giardia infected and Giardia free) was randomly classified into three subgroups and given low (9 mg Zn/kg), normal (33 mg Zn/kg), and high levels (288 mg Zn/kg) of dietary zinc over a 2-week period for acclimation. Fourteen days post- Giardia infection, all of the mice were euthanized and blood samples were collected. The number of trophozoites was quantified (hematocytometer), and serum zinc levels were determined via atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Significant increases in the median weights were only found in the Giardia-free mice ( p < 0.05). A higher final median weight was found in the Giardia-free group when compared with that of the Giardia-infected group given low dietary zinc ( p = 0.013). In the Giardia-infected group with low dietary zinc, the geometric mean of trophozoites was 3,498 ± 101 (SE) per milliliter. The Giardia-infected group had lower serum zinc levels than did the Giardia-free group with the high dietary zinc regimens ( p < 0.05). Our results are consistent with studies among human populations, but further studies are required to elucidate the actual mechanism governing the zinc-giardiasis interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photoreception is one of the most primitive sensory functions in metazoans. Despite the diversity of forms and components of metazoan eyes, many studies have demonstrated the existence of a common cellular and molecular basis for their development. Genes like pax6, sine oculis, eyes absent, dachshund, otx, Rx and atonal are known to be associated with the specification and development of the eyes. In planarians, sine oculis, eyes absent and otxA play an essential role during the formation of the eye after decapitation, whereas pax6, considered by many authors as a master control gene for eye formation, does not seem to be involved in adult eye regeneration. Whether this is a peculiarity of adult planarians or, on the contrary, is also found in embryogenesis remains unknown. Herein, we characterize embryonic eye development in the planarian species Schmidtea polychroa using histological sections and molecular markers. Additionally, we analyse the expression pattern of the pax6- sine oculis- eyes absent- dachshund network, and the genes Rx, otxA, otxB and atonal. We demonstrate that eye formation in planarian embryos shows great similarities to adult eye regeneration, both at the cellular and molecular level. We thus conclude that planarian eyes exhibit divergent molecular patterning mechanisms compared to the prototypic ancestral metazoan eye. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The early planarian embryo presents a complete ciliated epidermis and a pharynx and feeds on maternal yolk cells. In this paper, we report on all the elements involved in the formation of such an autonomous embryo, which we name cryptic larva. First, we provide a description of the spherical and fusiform yolk cells and their relationship with the blastomeres, from the laying of the egg capsule up to their final fate in mid embryonic stages. Then, we describe the early cleavage and the subsequent development of the tissues of the cryptic larva, namely, the primary epidermis, the embryonic pharynx, and a new cell type, the star cells. Finally, we discuss the possibility that the cryptic larva either constitutes a vestigial larva or, more likely, is the evolutionary result of the competition between multiple embryos for the limited and shared maternal resources in the egg capsule. The monitoring of gene expression is fundamental for understanding developmental biology. Here we report a successful experimental protocol for in situ hybridization in both whole-mount and sectioned planarian embryos. Conventional in situ hybridization techniques in developmental biology are used on whole-mount preparations. However, given that the inherent lack of external morphological markers in planarian embryos hinders the proper interpretation of gene expression data in whole-mount preparations, here we used sectioned material. We discuss the advantages of sectioned versus whole-mount preparations, namely, better probe penetration, improved tissue preservation, and the possibility to interpret gene expression in relation to internal morphological markers such as the epidermis, the embryonic and definitive pharynges, and the gastrodermis. Triclad flatworms are well studied for their regenerative properties, yet little is known about their embryonic development. We here describe the embryonic development of the tricladSchmidtea polychroa, using histological and immunocytochemical analysis of whole-mount preparations and sections. During early cleavage (stage 1), yolk cells fuse and enclose the zygote into a syncytium. The zygote divides into blastomeres that dissociate and migrate into the syncytium. During stage 2, a subset of blastomeres differentiate into a transient embryonic epidermis that surrounds the yolk syncytium, and an embryonic pharynx. Other blastomeres divide as a scattered population of cells in the syncytium. During stage 3, the embryonic pharynx imbibes external yolk cells and a gastric cavity is formed in the center of the syncytium. The syncytial yolk and the blastomeres contained within it are compressed into a thin peripheral rind. From a location close to the embryonic pharynx, which defines the posterior pole, bilaterally symmetric ventral nerve cord pioneers extend forward. Stage 4 is characterized by massive proliferation of embryonic cells. Large yolk-filled cells lining the syncytium form the gastrodermis. During stage 5 the external syncytial yolk mantle is resorbed and the embryonic cells contained within differentiate into an irregular scaffold of muscle and nerve cells. Epidermal cells differentiate and replace the transient embryonic epidermis. Through stages 6-8, the embryo adopts its worm-like shape, and loosely scattered populations of differentiating cells consolidate into structurally defined organs. In this paper we study the effect of operating time of AgI ground acetonic generatorsbefore hailing on the hail characteristics (size and hardness), and hailfall crop damages.The study was carried out in a large area of northern Spain over an area of 12,000 km2.Data are available from 1,984 hailstorms that occurred from May to September in theperiod 1982–1987. By using several Stepwise Logistic Regression Models, a statisticalsignificant (p < 0.05) decrease shows up in hailfall crop damage due to hail prevention.This effect is due to the influence of ground seeding on the hardness and mainly on thesize of hailstones. Planarian cell renewal is achieved as a result of proliferation and differentiation of totipotent undifferentiated cells called neoblasts. The absence of mitosis within the planarian pharynx raises the question as to how cell renewal and growth occur within this organ. Two explanations have been advanced: one proposes that new cells remain close to the base of the pharynx, which then grows by distal displacement of older cells, and the other suggests that the new cells are intercalated between older cells throughout the pharynx. The second alternative, however, does not explain how new cells enter the pharynx or how they reach their final destination. In this study of myosin heavy-chain gene expression within planarian pharynx, a row of differentiating myocytes was detected all along the pharynx parenchyma. According to the hybridization pattern, all these myocytes appeared to be at early stages of differentiation. These data favour an intercalary model for muscle cell renewal within the pharynx. According to this model, neoblasts at the base of the pharynx would enter the pharynx, where they would start differentiation to myocytes, move to the subepithelial musculature and intercalate between the old muscle cells. To obtain specific immunological probes for studying molecular mechanisms involved in cell renewal, cell differentiation, and pattern formation in intact and regenerating planarians, we have produced a hybridoma library specific for the asexual race of the freshwater planarian Dugesia (Girardia) tigrina. Among the 276 monoclonal antibodies showing tissue-, cell-, cell subtype-, subcellular- and position-specific staining, we have found monoclonal antibodies against all tissues and cell types with the exception of neoblasts, the undifferentiated totipotent stem-cells in planarians. We have also detected position-specific antigens that label anterior, central, and posterior regions. Patterns of expression uncovered an unexpected heterogeneity among previously thought single cell types, as well as interesting cross-reactivities that deserve further study. Characterization of some of these monoclonal antibodies suggests they may be extremely useful as molecular markers for studying cell renewal and cell differentiation in the intact and regenerating organism, tracing the origin, lineage, and differentiation of blastema cells, and characterizing the stages and mechanisms of early pattern formation. Moreover, two position-specific monoclonals, the first ones isolated in planarians, will be instrumental in describing in molecular terms how the new pattern unfolds during regeneration and in devising the pattern formation model that best fits classical data on regeneration in planarians. Freshwater planarians (Platyhelminthes, Turbellaria) show a great degree of morphological plasticity, making them a useful model for studying cell differentiation and pattern restoration processes during regeneration. Using confocal microscopy and a monoclonal antibody specific for muscle cells (TMUS-13), we have monitored the restoration of the body wall musculature during head regeneration in whole-mount organisms. Our results show that until the 4th day of regeneration the blastema is occupied by very disorganized muscle fibers, that from this moment become progressively organized restoring the original muscle pattern. In addition to recognizing mature muscle cells, TMUS-13 also recognizes differentiating myocytes, allowing us to trace the origin of newly formed muscle cells. We report that myocytes are detected in the postblastema region as early as day 1 of regeneration. This is the first demonstration that, in addition to serving as a proliferative zone as previously described, overt differentiation begins in the postblastema, at least for muscle cells. The special morphological features of freshwater planarians make them an attractive and informative model for studying the processes of regeneration and pattern formation. In this work, we investigate pattern formation and maturation of the planarian pharynx during regeneration in tail fragments. Using three monoclonal antibodies (TCAV-1, TF-26 and TMUS-13) specific for epithelial, secretory and muscle cells, respectively, we followed the sequence and timing of differentiation and maturation of these three cell types within the regenerating pharynx. Two of these monoclonal antibodies, TCAV-1 and TMUS-13, also labelled morphologically immature cells that appear to be committed to the differentiation pathway leading to their respective adult cell types. Our results show that the cells forming the new pharynx come from undifferentiated cells through proliferation and differentiation processes rather than from differentiated cells of the old stump. We describe three stages of pharynx regeneration according to the immunoreactivity shown: (1) no immunoreactivity, corresponding to the accumulation of undifferentiated cells that form the pharynx primordium; (2) immunoreactivity to TCAV-1 and TMUS-13, corresponding to the re-building of the pharynx; and (3) immunoreactivity to TF-26, corresponding to a fully mature and functional pharynx. The sequence of differentiation of these three cell types suggests that the pharynx grows by intercalation of new undifferentiated cells coming from the parenchyma between the older pharyngeal cells, in agreement with existing models of pharynx regeneration.
