Given the current state of medical artificial intelligence (AI) and perceptions towards it, collaborative systems are becoming the preferred choice for clinical workflows. This work aims to address expert interaction with medical AI support systems to gain insight towards how these systems can be better designed with the user in mind. As eye tracking metrics have been shown to be robust indicators of usability, we employ them for evaluating the usability and user interaction with medical AI support systems. We use expert gaze to assess experts' interaction with an AI software for caries detection in bitewing x-ray images. We compared standard viewing of bitewing images without AI support versus viewing where AI support could be freely toggled on and off. We found that experts turned the AI on for roughly 25% of the total inspection task, and generally turned it on halfway through the course of the inspection. Gaze behavior showed that when supported by AI, more attention was dedicated to user interface elements related to the AI support, with more frequent transitions from the image itself to these elements. When considering that expert visual strategy is already optimized for fast and effective image inspection, such interruptions in attention can lead to increased time needed for the overall assessment. Gaze analysis provided valuable insights into an AI's usability for medical image inspection. Further analyses of these tools and how to delineate metrical measures of usability should be developed. Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop an assessment tool for automatic detection of dental caries in periapical radiographs using convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture. Methods: A novel diagnostic model named ResNet + SAM was established using numerous periapical radiographs (4278 images) annotated by medical experts to automatically detect dental caries. The performance of the model was compared to the traditional CNNs (VGG19, ResNet-50), and the dentists. The Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) technique shows the region of interest in the image for the CNNs. Results: ResNet + SAM demonstrated significantly improved performance compared to the modified ResNet-50 model, with an average F1 score of 0.886 (95% CI 0.855–0.918), accuracy of 0.885 (95% CI 0.862–0.901) and AUC of 0.954 (95% CI 0.924–0.980). The comparison between the performance of the model and the dentists revealed that the model achieved higher accuracy than that of the junior dentists. With the assist of the tool, the dentists achieved superior metrics with a mean F1 score of 0.827 and the interobserver agreement for dental caries is enhanced from 0.592/0.610 to 0.706/0.723. Conclusions: According to the results obtained from the experiments, the automatic assessment tool using the ResNet + SAM model shows remarkable performance and has excellent possibilities in identifying dental caries. Objectives: We aim to develop a deep learning model based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) combined with a classification algorithm (CA) to assist dentists in quickly and accurately diagnosing the stage of periodontitis. Materials and methods: Periapical radiographs (PERs) and clinical data were collected. The CNNs including Alexnet, VGG16, and ResNet18 were trained on PER to establish the PER-CNN models for no periodontal bone loss (PBL) and PBL. The CAs including random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), naive Bayes (NB), logistic regression (LR), and k-nearest neighbor (KNN) were added to the PER-CNN model for control, stage I, stage II and stage III/IV periodontitis. Heat map was produced using a gradient-weighted class activation mapping method to visualize the regions of interest of the PER-Alexnet model. Clustering analysis was performed based on the ten PER-CNN scores and the clinical characteristics. Results: The accuracy of the PER-Alexnet and PER-VGG16 models with the higher performance was 0.872 and 0.853, respectively. The accuracy of the PER-Alexnet + RF model with the highest performance for control, stage I, stage II and stage III/IV was 0.968, 0.960, 0.835 and 0.842, respectively. Heat map showed that the regions of interest predicted by the model were periodontitis bone lesions. We found that age and smoking were significantly related to periodontitis based on the PER-Alexnet scores. Conclusion: The PER-Alexnet + RF model has reached high performance for whole-case periodontal diagnosis. Objective: To compare and analyze professional (P chart) and simple (S chart) clinical image evaluation charts for evaluating panoramic radiograph image quality. Methods: Ten evaluators assessed 285 clinical panoramic radiograph images. The evaluators were divided into oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMFR, n = 5) and general dentist (dentists not specializing in oral and maxillofacial radiology, G, n = 5) groups. For image evaluation, P and S charts provided by the Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology were used. Scores of items for each evaluation chart were used to compare the reliability, correlation, evaluation scores, evaluation time, and preference, and statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics. Results: The S chart showed similar levels of evaluation scores at shorter evaluation time, as compared to the P chart. In the results for each evaluation chart, all analyzed correlations were statistically significant. Total score, image density/contrast/sharpness, and overall image quality items showed a very high positive correlation in the P chart. While the overall range of correlation coefficients was relatively lower in the S chart than the P chart, the same items showed high correlation coefficients. In the preference evaluation, both the professional and generalist groups preferred the S chart. Conclusions: A comparative analysis with the P chart, revisions, and upgrades are needed for the S chart items that showed low correlations in this study, such as artifacts, coverage area, and patient movement. Aim: Is upper quadrant neural tissue extensibility affected in asymptomatic health care professionals? Participants: Ninety asymptomatic health care professionals of 26–60 years (30 surgeons, 30 dentists, 30 physiotherapist) were selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional type of observational study, and the data was collected by simple random sampling, in which various ULTT were performed on both upper extremities for median (ULTT1), radial (ULTT2), and ulnar (ULTT3) nerve. Elbow position was measured at first onset of discomfort perceived by participants (R1) and, secondly, when the firm resistance to movement was felt by the examiner (R2), by using universal goniometer. The test was considered positive if the symptoms arise before 60° of end elbow ROM. Results: The results showed that there was reduced upper quadrant neural tissue extensibility in asymptomatic health care professionals. The median nerve was most affected, and the ulnar nerve was least affected. The prevalence rate of reduced neural extensibility was highest among dentists as compared to the surgeons and physiotherapists. High correlation was found between R1and R2 for all three ULTT (p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: More than half, specifically 51.1%, of asymptomatic health care professionals had reduced extensibility of the neural tissues in their upper limbs. Purpose: It is traditionally considered that breaking bad news to patients does not represent a cause for concern for dental professionals. However, there are situations where they will be confronted with this task, as in the case of rare dental diseases. Little information is available regarding the feelings of healthcare professionals on this subject. There are no qualitative studies that explore how a diagnosis of oligodontia is announced to patients by dentists and orthodontists. The aim of our study is to explore the difficulties and ethical issues experienced by dental health professionals when they have to announce a diagnosis of oligodontia to a patient and their family. Methods: This study relied on a qualitative research method using focus groups of dentists and orthodontists and a thematic analysis procedure. Results: The difficulties experienced could be summarised within five topics: organisational difficulties, difficulties with the management of dental treatment and with the administrative management associated with this anomaly, difficulties with the content of the announcement, and relational difficulties. These could be grouped in two categories: practical difficulties and ethical difficulties. Conclusion: This survey allowed us to understand the difficulties encountered by dentists and orthodontists when announcing oligodontia. The participants felt uncomfortable with this task and were under stress. They reported difficulties in delivering the medical information and in adapting to the message. Purpose: The prevalence of odontogenic infections remains one of the highest in the world. If untreated, odontogenic infections can break through the limitation, disseminate to other organs or spaces, and cause high mortality rates. However, it is still difficult to rapidly target limited or disseminated infections in clinical practice. The type of disseminated odontogenic infections and the responsible bacteria have not been described in detail. Methods: Search databases (e.g., PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase) for reports published from 2018.1 to 2022.9. Use search strategies: ("odontogenic infections" OR "pulpitis" OR "periapical lesions" OR "periodontal diseases") AND ("disseminated infections" OR "complication"). Results: Fourteen different types of disseminated odontogenic infections, most of which are polymicrobial infections, can spread through the body either direct or through hematogenous diffusion. Multiple microbial infections can be more invasive in the transmission of infection. Secondary infections are commonly associated with bacteria like Fusobacterium spp., Streptococcus spp., Peptostreptococcus spp., Prevotella spp., and Staphylococcus spp. Antibiotics with broad-spectrum activity are fundamental as first-line antimicrobial agents based on the microorganisms isolated from disseminated infections. Conclusion: This review elaborates on the epidemiology, microorganisms, risk factors, and dissemination routes, and provides evidence-based opinions on the diagnosis, multidisciplinary management, and prevention of odontogenic infections for dentists and clinicians. Objectives: Low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-BT) with 198Au grains and 192Ir pins is an essential treatment option for oral cancer due to its high rate of local control and low invasiveness. However, the radiation exposure of medical radiation workers is concerning. Thus, we aimed to determine the radiation dose delivered to medical radiation workers during LDR-BT using 198Au grains and 192Ir pins for oral cancer. Methods: Thirty-two patients with oral cancer underwent 198Au grain interstitial LDR-BT between June 2016 and May 2023, and 23 patients with tongue cancer underwent 192Ir pin interstitial LDR-BT between March 2015 and November 2017 at our hospital. Dosimetry was performed by attaching a dosimeter to the chest pocket of the operator and assistant during 198Au grain or 192Ir pin LDR-BT. Since the operator also loads 198Au grains into the implantation device, the operator's radiation dose includes the dose received during this preparation. Results: Mean radiation doses of the operators with 198Au grain and 192Ir pin LDR-BT were 165.8 and 211.2 μSv, respectively. Statistically significant differences between the radioactive sources of 198Au grain and 192Ir pin LDR-BT were observed (p = 0.0459). The mean radiation doses of the assistants with 198Au grain and 192Ir pin LDR-BT were 92.0 and 162.0 μSv, respectively. Statistically significant differences were observed between the radioactive sources of 198Au grains and 192Ir pin LDR-BT (p = 0.0003). Conclusions: Regarding radioactive source differences, 192Ir pin LDR-BT resulted in higher doses delivered to medical radiation workers than 198Au grain LDR-BT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physicians and dentists have a very limited exposure to personal financial management and yet find themselves in the top 10% of earners in the United States of America. Education loans, practice expenses, and high standards of living obligate them to be good financial stewards to succeed financially. Anecdotal personal experience and review. The article establishes seven steps to implement as medical/dental students, interns, residents, or practicing doctors to move towards financial health and security. The steps include (1) saving enough; (2) good debt management; (3) being tax savvy; (4) obtaining the correct insurance; (5) making wise investments; (6) if choosing to marry, avoid divorce; and (7) keeping track with periodic progress assessment. Each of these steps contains several components that can aid and guide physicians and dentists in their financial arc of development over their professional career and into retirement, considering generational wealth transfer or charitable donation as ultimate goals. This brief guide is based on my own financial journey to achieve long-term financial independence: start early, use simple tax deferred investments without chasing trends while keeping fees down, live within your means, and adequately insure your income. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the accuracy of implant placement through three-dimensional planning and fully guided insertion, comparing outcomes between undergraduate and postgraduate surgeons. Methods: Thirty-eight patients requiring 42 implants in posterior single-tooth gaps were enrolled from the University Clinic for Prosthodontics at the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg and the Department of Prosthodontics, Geriatric Dentistry, and Craniomandibular Disorders of Charité University Medicine, Berlin. Twenty-two implants were placed by undergraduate students (n = 18), while 20 implants were placed by trainee postgraduate dentists (n = 5). Pre-operative intraoral scans and cone beam computed tomography images were performed for implant planning and surgical template fabrication. Postoperative intraoral scans were superimposed onto the original scans to analyze implant accuracy in terms of apical, coronal, and angular deviations, as well as vertical discrepancies. Results: In the student group, two implant insertions were performed by the assistant dentist because of intraoperative complications and, thus, were excluded from further analysis. For the remaining implants, no statistically significant differences were observed between the dentist and student groups in terms of apical (p = 0.245), coronal (p = 0.745), or angular (p = 0.185) implant deviations, as well as vertical discrepancies (p = 0.433). Conclusions: This study confirms the viability of fully guided implant placement by undergraduate students, with comparable accuracy to postgraduate dentists. Integration into dental education can prepare students for implant procedures, expanding access and potentially reducing costs in clinical practice. Collaboration is essential for safe implementation, and future research should explore long-term outcomes and patient perspectives, contributing to the advancement of dental education and practice. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate attitudes and preferred therapy choice for first permanent molars (FPM) with Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH). Methods: An online questionnaire was sent out to general dentists (n = 559) working in the Public Dental Service in Region Västra Götaland, orthodontists (n = 293), and pediatric dentists (n = 156) (members from each interest association), in Sweden. The questionnaire contained three parts: general questions regarding the respondents, patient cases, and general questions regarding extraction of FPMs with MIH. Statistics were carried out using Chi-squared tests, with a significance level of 5%. Results: A response rate of 36% was obtained. Orthodontists and pediatric dentists were more prone to extract FPMs with both moderate and severe MIH, compared to general dentists. When restoring FPMs with moderate MIH, resin composite was preferred. Compared to the general dentists, the pediatric dentists were more prone to choose glass-ionomer cement in the FPMs with severe MIH. The most common treatment choice for FPMs with mild MIH was fluoride varnish. "When root furcation is under development of the second permanent molar on radiographs" was chosen as the optimal time for extracting FPMs with severe MIH, and the general dentists based their treatment decisions on recommendations from a pediatric dentist. Conclusion: Extraction of FPMs with moderate and severe MIH is considered a therapy of choice among general dentists and specialists, and the preferred time of extraction is before the eruption of the second permanent molar. Purpose: This study was conducted to explore the preference and experience of paediatric dentists based in Switzerland regarding the use of articaine and other local and topical anaesthesia. Methods: An 18-question survey was developed, piloted, and distributed to the members of the Swiss association of paediatric dentistry (n = 460). The following information were collected: most used local anaesthetic in different age groups, time needed to inject a full ampule, frequency of observed local and systemic side effects, application of topical anaesthetic prior to injection, time waited between application and the injection, and perceived effectiveness of topical anaesthetic. The dentists' responses were analysed with logistic regressions reporting odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) at 5%. Results: The response rate was 37% (n = 168) out of the 460 questionnaires sent, with the responders being predominantly female (67%) and 47-year-old on average. More than 80% of the dentists used articaine in all age groups. 45% of responders took longer than 60 s to inject a full ampule. Local and systemic side-effects were observed by 82% and 28% of respondents respectively, although the nature and the significance of those were not detailed due to the anonymous nature of the questionnaire. Significantly less local adverse effects were seen for older children (p = 0.04) and among dentists with more years of experience (p = 0.01). Most responders applied topical anaesthetic and half of them waited longer than 60 s before injection. Conclusions: Articaine is a widely used local anaesthetic by the studied group of Swiss paediatric dentists regardless of patient's age. Aim: To assess the knowledge of Brazilian dentists about Minimum Intervention (MI) using a Minimum Intervention Dentistry to Dental Caries-Knowledge Scale (MIDDeC-KS) and evaluate its psychometric properties. Materials and Methods: An online scale was developed to evaluate dentists' knowledge about MI. The higher the score, the greater the knowledge and vice versa. A preliminary study was carried out with 143 dentists to validate the MIDDeC-KS. For psychometric properties analysis, convergent and discriminant validity, test–retest reliability, and internal consistency of the instrument were assessed. After validation, MIDDeC-KS was applied to a representative sample of Brazilian dentists. T test for independent samples, Chi-square, and/or ANOVA one-way tests were applied. Results: The MIDDeC-KS convergent (Spearman's = 0.48) and discriminant (P = 0.001) validity and reliability (ICC = 0.85, α = 0.72 and ω = 0.74) were proved. The participants (n = 637) obtained an overall mean score of 7.4 ± 2.5. The sample was mainly composed of females (P < 0.01), who graduated over 10 years prior (P = 0.02), from public colleges (P < 0.01), and most were pediatric dentists (38.2%). The highest and lowest scores were reached by pediatric dentists (9.2 ± 1.6) and bucomaxillofacial professionals (3.1 ± 2.1), respectively. Brazilian dentists demonstrated more knowledge about diet, biofilm, and topical fluoride control (84.3%), while the Hall technique (31.9%), resin infiltrant (47.6%), and chemical mechanical caries removal (48.4%) were the least known MI techniques. Conclusion: Brazilian dentists demonstrated more knowledge about preventive measures and less about more recent protocols, such as the Hall technique, resin infiltrant, and chemical mechanical caries tissue removal. It is known that both procrastination and self-compassion are associated with health behaviours in the sense that the former reduces them and the latter increases them. It is also known that regular visits to the doctor and especially to the dentist are part of a healthy lifestyle. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of procrastination and self-compassion on dental attendance. For this purpose, a new questionnaire was designed and confirmed by means of an explorative factor analysis. The results show that procrastination has an influence on dental attendance, even when the influence of dental anxiety is excluded. No conclusion can be drawn about the influence of self-compassion on dental attendance.These results open up a new area in which procrastination plays an important role and which has been neglected until now. The dentist plays a crucial role in identifying oral lesions as it is their responsibility to conduct the clinical examination for diagnosing diseases in this anatomical region. Dentists should be able to perform simple oral biopsies when this procedure is necessary. However, several studies point out that dentists lack experience and perceive themselves incapable of performing biopsies. This analytical cross-sectional study aimed to assess participants' experiences and perceptions regarding a continuing education activity focused on the biopsy procedure. The secondary aim was to evaluate their ability to determine when a biopsy is indicated. The sample consisted of 228 individuals: 143 dentists and 85 undergraduate dental students who completed questionnaires related to a lecture held in May/2021, as part of the continuing educational activities of the "Red May" Project. Participants completed two questionnaires: the first assessed their experience and self-confidence in performing oral biopsies, whereas the second evaluated their capacity to define when the biopsy is indicated by means the evaluation of 10 clinical cases. The results reveal no significant difference in the percentage of correct answers between dental students and dentists. Regarding the frequency of performing the biopsy procedure, most respondents (69.7%) reported doing so rarely or never. Furthermore, while 31.6% of the participants stated that they perform biopsies depending on the case, 68.4% prefer to refer patients to specialists, such as professionals in Stomatology/Oral Medicine. These findings highlight limitations in the educational preparation of the study population concerning biopsy procedures, oral lesions, and their management. They also indicate a concerning tendency to overestimate knowledge in this area. Thus, this study emphasizes the importance of continuing education and underscores the need to revise academic curricula and provide complementary education for all dental professionals. Maxillary air sinus (MS) is the largest and clinically most important air sinus because of its anatomical relationship with the nasal cavity and especially with teeth of the upper jaw. Periapical dental infection frequently spreads to the maxillary sinus leading to its secondary infection. The occurrence of maxillary sinusitis due to the odontogenic causes is one of the common clinical conditions which is frequently encountered by the endodontists. While handling such cases, the gross anatomy and structure of MS are visualized using various radiological images. However, most of the time, it is challenging for dentists to understand the MS due to its complicated morphology. Keeping this in mind, this literature review is done to comprehensively compile the details on MS from anatomy, radiology, and endodontic importance point of view. The articles were selected from databases like PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Google Scholar using the keywords "maxillary sinus," "maxillary sinusitis," "Endo antral syndrome," "periapical surgery," and "odontogenic infections." In addition, a literature survey was also done using phrases like "roots extending into maxillary sinus," "foreign bodies in maxillary sinus," etc. Anatomical variation of sinus could be of clinical importance and the knowledge about the same could come in handy in treatment planning of upper teeth. Extruded materials from the root of a tooth into the sinus can make it prone to infection. The dentist should carefully evaluate the root of a tooth during root canal treatment. Introduction: A 2015 survey of the Japan Osteoporosis Society (JOS) on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) revealed that cooperation between physicians and dentists was poor. Discontinuation of antiresorptive agents before tooth extraction was found to increase adverse events without preventing MRONJ. We compared this 2015 survey with a new survey conducted in 2022 to investigate cooperation between physicians and dentists for MRONJ. Materials and methods: A web-based structured questionnaire including 13 key queries was sent to 3813 physicians who were members of JOS, and 1227 (32.2%) responses were received. Results: Of the 1227 respondents, 909 (74.1%) had complied with a discontinuation request from a dentist before tooth extraction, although 25.4% of medications were not related to the incidence of MRONJ. Of these, 177 respondents reported 252 adverse events including 10 (1.3%) cases of MRONJ. The prevalence of fractures increased from 4.8% in 2015 to 8.2% in 2022. The rates of respondents who requested oral health care by a dentist before antiresorptive agent therapy and reported cooperation between physicians and dentists were 72.7% and 42.4% in 2022 compared with 32.9% and 24.8% in 2015, respectively. The rates of cooperation among the 47 prefectures in Japan were significantly different, ranging from 10.0 to 83.3% (p = 0.02). Conclusion: This study confirmed increased cooperation between physicians and dentists for MRONJ in Japan. However, a more equal distribution of cooperation across Japan is necessary to optimally manage MRONJ. Objectives: This study sought to identify the factors associated with the life satisfaction and peace of mind (PoM) of dentists not in full-time clinical training. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional questionnaires were distributed to dentists in Taiwan to collect their life satisfaction, PoM, sociodemographic data, and dental career-related characteristics. Life satisfaction was measured using a 5-item Satisfaction with Life Scale. PoM was measured using a 7-item Peace of Mind Scale. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression models were estimated to explore potential associations between the two scales and the examined factors. Results: A total of 1196 dentists (45.6% female; mean age = 44.12) completed the questionnaires. The response rate of completed questionnaires from email invitations was 32.9%. On multivariable analysis, life satisfaction and PoM were associated with age (b = 0.008 in both), better perceived health (b = 0.262 and 0.308, respectively), family interaction (b = 0.264 and 0.207, respectively), and friend relationships (b = 0.076 and 0.091, respectively). Being married (b = 0.191), being specialized (b = 0.127), working in private practice, and spending 10 to 39 h per week with patients (b = 0.101 to 0.162) were associated with a higher level of life satisfaction but not PoM. Conclusions: Specialists working in private practice without working overtime were associated with better life satisfaction. However, the dentists' health and relationships with family were more related to their subjective well-being than their professional achievements. Clinical relevance: Our findings can help policymakers increase awareness of the well-being of general dentists and those in academia or hospitals to promote their mental health. Peri-implantitis can cause marginal bone remodeling around implants. The aim is to develop an automatic image processing approach based on two artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in intraoral (periapical and bitewing) radiographs to assist dentists in determining bone loss. The first is a deep learning (DL) object-detector (YOLOv3) to roughly identify (no exact localization is required) two objects: prosthesis (crown) and implant (screw). The second is an image understanding-based (IU) process to fine-tune lines on screw edges and to identify significant points (intensity bone changes, intersections between screw and crown). Distances between these points are used to compute bone loss. A total of 2920 radiographs were used for training (50%) and testing (50%) the DL process. The mAP@0.5 metric is used for performance evaluation of DL considering periapical/bitewing and screws/crowns in upper and lower jaws, with scores ranging from 0.537 to 0.898 (sufficient because DL only needs an approximation). The IU performance is assessed with 50% of the testing radiographs through the t test statistical method, obtaining p values of 0.0106 (line fitting) and 0.0213 (significant point detection). The IU performance is satisfactory, as these values are in accordance with the statistical average/standard deviation in pixels for line fitting (2.75/1.01) and for significant point detection (2.63/1.28) according to the expert criteria of dentists, who establish the ground-truth lines and significant points. Background: Medical child abuse and neglect are part of a spectrum of conditions that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in children. Recognition of these forms of child maltreatment is crucial to prevent harm. Dentists should have familiarity with the framework for diagnosing and reporting child abuse as the orofacial complex is the prime anatomical region to show any signs of abuse. AIM: The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess the knowledge, awareness, and experience of dentists in India on child abuse and their role as primary responders. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire comprising 16 questions was distributed among dentists in India and responses were collected. The questionnaire included questions on the knowledge, awareness, and experience of dentists in child abuse identification, reporting, legal proceedings, and proposals for the betterment of the current scenario. The data collected were statistically analyzed. Results: A total of 203 dentists responded to the questionnaires through online platforms. Among them, 78.3% were females, and 65.3% had an institutional practice. While the majority (72.4%) were confident in identifying the indicators of child abuse, the knowledge on reporting was alarming. 98% of participants expressed their need for comprehensive education and training. Conclusion: The gap between the knowledge about indicators and the confidence to report suspicious cases are notable in this study. The human papilloma virus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection, affecting nearly 50% of the world population. HPV can lead to tissue damage and is associated with many types of cancers. Healthcare professionals' knowledge regarding HPV infection are essential in assuring favorable outcomes for those exposed to HPV, either in prevention or in intervention efforts. In this cross-sectional, population-based study, we explored the levels of HPV knowledge among health professionals in a Brazilian municipality. In total, 260 individuals (90% women), aged 21–66 years (Mean = 40.10 ± 9.30) participated in this investigation and responded to standard questionnaires measuring HPV knowledge as well as sociodemographic and occupational data. Regarding HPV knowledge, 85 (32.8%) individuals were considered to have sufficient knowledge (scored good or very good according to percentile classifications), whereas 174 (67.2%) were labeled as having insufficient knowledge. Mann-Whitney tests showed higher HPV knowledge among those who reported not having children (p = 0.05) and lower levels in the group of community health workers (CHW; p < 0.001). Logistic regression analyses showed that having children (OR = 0.50; 95%CI: 0.26, 0.96) and being a CHW (OR = 0.52; 95%CI: 0.28, 0.97) were independently associated with insufficient knowledge about HPV. In conclusion, data reported in this study might aid in understanding factors associated with HPV management given the evidence collected from healthcare professionals, suggesting strategies to promote both health education and promotion. Objectives: Professionals in the health sector have higher stress than others. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress levels of dentists while treating with children under clinical, deep sedation, and general anesthesia. Materials and methods: Blood pressure (systolic, diastolic), pulse value, and O2 saturations were measured. Saliva samples were taken by the dentists 10 min before the treatment, at the 25th min of the treatment, and 30 min after the treatment under clinical, deep sedation, and general anesthesia. Salivary cortisol was measured by the electrochemiluminescence method. All data were analyzed statistically. Results: Cortisol values under the sedation were higher than clinical and general anesthesia (P < 0.05). As a result of the applied Dentist Job Stress Questionnaire, the stress level of dentists under sedation was higher than the clinical and general anesthesia (P < 0.05). Under sedation, systolic and diastolic blood pressures measured during the procedure were found to be high (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Dentists who care for pediatric patients are more stressed when applying treatment under deep sedation. The results suggest the need for more training and practice to strengthen the education given on general anesthesia/sedation in pediatric dentistry training. Among the non-metrical variants of the mandible that have been proven to be a key issue for dental practitioners, the retromolar foramen constitutes one of the most controversial details regarding its prevalence and associated variables. Thus, this study evaluated the prevalence of the retromolar foramen and the variables associated with its presence in a large Spanish collection of human dry mandibles from the nineteenth century. Six hundred Spanish human dry mandibles (1200 sides) belonging to an osteology collection were examined. The presence of teeth, the presence or absence of retromolar foramen, as well as its side, diameter, number, and location were evaluated. Descriptive analysis and analysis of the associations between the variables were performed. The retromolar foramen was observed in 184 mandibles (31%) and was predominantly present unilaterally (60.8%). Most mandibles (54.9%) had a single foramen. The most common location was the retromolar trigone region (84%). On analysis of the association of variables, it was observed a strong association (p < 0.001) between the presence or absence of the foramen and the presence of teeth. Moreover, a significant association was also found between sex vs. presence of teeth (p = 0.033), sex vs. presentation side of the foramen (p = 0.028), sex vs. number of foramina found (p = 0.004), and diameter vs. number of foramina found (p < 0.001). This study reveals that the retromolar foramen showed a high prevalence of 31% in nineteenth century Spaniards and was located primarily in the retromolar trigone, suggesting that dentists should be aware of and consider the relevant findings of this study. Introduction: Workers in the healthcare industry form the backbone of health systems everywhere. In the face of global health crises like the current monkeypox (mpox) outbreak, healthcare workers like doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, midwives, paramedics, administrators, support staff, laboratory technicians, and community health workers all play crucial roles in providing care and containing the spread of the disease. Aim: Therefore, in the wake of concerns about mpox recurrence, we seek to shed light on the occupational transmission of mpox infection and the possible risk to healthcare personnel. Results: Contamination of the environment of the household of cases of mpox and environment of the patient care units with the viral DNA has been reported besides asymptomatic cases and detection of viral DNA in air samples; therefore, more research on non-lesion-based testing for human mpox infection for screening asymptomatic people, particularly among populations at high risk of infection, in the event of asymptomatic transmission and potential transmission via aerosols is necessary. Monitoring efforts can be aided by incorporating mpox testing into locations where people are more likely to contract illnesses and seek medical attention. We must take a precautionary infection control approach to control the spread of the virus while completing urgent research to understand better the human-to-human mpox transmission process. Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the oral health-related quality of life (oHRQoL) and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after 10 years of supportive periodontal care (SPC). Material and methods: Patients were re-examined 120±12 months after active periodontal therapy. Dental and periodontal status and oHRQoL by completing Oral Health Impact Profile-G49 (OHIP-G49) and PROMs by marking a visual analogue scale (VAS) for self-perceived esthetics (VASe), chewing function (VASc), and hygiene ability (VASh) were assessed. Patient- and tooth-related factors (age, insurance status, number of SPC, compliance, change of therapist, smoking, tooth loss, need for surgery or antibiotic intake, bleeding on probing (BOP), periodontal inflamed surface area) influencing oHRQoL and PROMs were evaluated. Results: One hundred eight periodontally compromised patients (59 female, mean age 65.4±10.7 years) lost 135 teeth during 10 years of SPC. At re-examination, 1.8% of all sites showed PPD ≥6mm. The mean OHIP-G49 sum score was 17.6±18.5, and VAS resulted in 76.0±22.5 (VASe), 86.3±16.3 (VASc), and 79.8±15.8 (VASh). Linear regression analyses identified a positive correlation with oHRQoL and/or PROMs for private insurance status (OHIP-G49, p=0.015, R2=0.204; VASc, p=0.005, R2=0.084; VASh, p=0.012, R2=0.222) and compliance to SPC (VASe, p=0.032; R2=0.204), as well as a negative correlation for active smoking (VASc, p=0.012, R2=0.084), increased BOP (VASh, p=0.029, R2=0.222) at the start of SPC, and number of lost molars (VASh, p=0.008, R2=0.222). Conclusion: It is realistic to obtain satisfactory oHRQoL and PROM values in most of the patients after 10 years of SPC. The identified factors may help to predict patient satisfaction in the long-term course of therapy. Clinical relevance: Systematic therapy of periodontally compromised patients provides values for oHRQoL and PROMs in a favorable range 10 years after therapy. Objectives: The prevalence of root caries is increasing globally, especially in the elderly population, and even though the number of patients with root caries lesions is augmenting, there are still many discrepancies in how dentists manage this condition. The present study aimed to develop and validate a questionnaire to evaluate how dentists diagnose, record and manage root caries lesions, and to verify the validity and reliability of this questionnaire. Materials and methods: An expert panel developed a self-administered questionnaire survey with three domains: (1) dentists' knowledge on diagnosis, recording, and managing root caries; (2) information about their current general clinical routines; (3) their demographics. The original English [E] version was translated into three different languages (French [F], German [G], Italian [I]), and subsequently back-translated into English by independent dentists. For the validation, 82 dentists (20–22 for each of the translated versions) accepted to answer the questionnaire at two different time-points (with 1-week interval). The data was quality checked. Construct validity, internal reliability, and intra-class correlation (ICC) were assessed. Results: Seventy-seven dentists completed the questionnaire twice [E: 17; F: 19; G: 19; I: 22]. The mean ICC (standard deviation) was 0.98(0.03) for E, 0.90(0.12) for F, 0.98 (0.04) for G, and 0.98 (0.01) for I. Overall, the test–retest reliability was excellent (mean ICC (SD): 0.96 (0.08)). Furthermore, the questionnaire demonstrated good internal reliability (inter-observer reliability; Fleiss kappa: overall:0.27(fair); E:0.30 (fair); F: 0.33(fair); G: 0.33(fair); I: 0.89 (almost perfect)). Conclusion: The questionnaire was validated and is suitable to be used in the four languages to assess the knowledge of dentists on diagnosing, recording and managing root caries. Purpose: Hall technique (HT) preformed metal crowns (PMCs) are allegedly oversized compared to conventional (C) PMCs. To investigate paediatric dentists' (PDs) perception of HT-PMCs and perception/ability to identify HT or C-PMCs on bitewings radiographs. Methods: An online cross-sectional questionnaire including ten bitewings (five of each of HT/CPMCs) was sent to PDs across the globe. A PMC type score (from '10') was calculated. T test, Pearson's and Fischer's Chi-square, and Odd Ratios (OR) (p < 0.05). Results: A total of 476 PDs from around the world responded. Most (97%) used PMCs in their practice. Most (98.7%) knew of, and 79% used HT-PMCs. A clear opinion shift, towards supporting HT, over time was noted (OR 11.154 [95% confidence interval (CI) 6.006–20.715]. A majority (67%) thought that HT/C-PMCs were similar radiographically. Only five PMCs were identified correctly [mean score 4.9 (± 1.73)]. A minority who thought that HT/C-PMCs were dissimilar scored higher than those who thought they were similar (5.31 ± 1.22; 4.68 ± 1.9, respectively, p < 0.00001). Nobody identified all ten PMCs. HT-PMCs were 4.63 times more identifiable than C-PMCs [(OR 24.857 CI 15.059–41.028) and (OR 5.361 CI 3.089–9.304)] for HT-PMCs and CP-MCs, respectively (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: PDs identified the PMC type in half of the bitewings. They perceived no clear radiographic difference between HT-PMCs and C-PMCs, but their chance of recognizing HT-PMCs was five times higher than C-PMCs. HT-PMC support was high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Dental services in Ireland are delivered in a mixed public–private system but the majority of dental care is paid for out-of-pocket by individuals. Ireland is not unusual in the global context where public subsidisation for oral healthcare is limited in many countries. This is despite the fact that oral health plays an important role in well-being and despite international evidence on the negative impact of user fees on utilisation of beneficial healthcare. However, there has been little up-to-date assessment of the prices faced by individuals for a range of non-acute care services in Ireland, including dental care. This paper presents an up-to-date assessment of private dental prices in Ireland for a range of preventive, primary, and complex services based on a nationally representative survey. Methods: The total sample size for the desk-based survey was 103, accounting for 6% of private dentists in Ireland, weighted to reflect the geographic distribution of dentists. Dentists were selected at random from the publicly available list of dentists participating in the Dental Treatment Benefit Scheme. The adult price of 10 different services covering core preventive, primary, and complex procedures were identified from public websites for the selected dental practices. Results: Results showed that in addition to there being an uneven supply of dentists across the country, dental prices also vary with some notable variations by region and type of service. In particular, dental practices located in border counties, and those in rural areas typically show lower mean prices relative to non-border counties and urban areas. Objectives: In digital intraoral radiography (DIR), images with defects caused by the digital process are sometimes produced. Hence, we analyzed DIR images with defects taken using the photostimulable phosphor (PSP) plate method and then classified these images based on the causes of the defect. The aim of this study was to classify defects in DIR using the PSP plate system, and to discuss the causes of each type of defect and the methods that can prevent their occurrence. Methods: Images with defects due to the two PSP plate systems (Arcana and Arcana Mira) were selected and classified according to the defect. Image defects caused by geometrical techniques that occur in both the film and PSP plate methods were excluded from this study. Moreover, changes in the rate of occurrence of images with defects over time were analyzed in this study. Results: The defects in images obtained by the PSP plate system were classified into six types, which were further divided into those caused by machine error or human error. Both types of error could influence the diagnostic performance. Machine error accidentally and rarely occurred; thus, the prevention of such errors is difficult. However, human error, especially errors caused by photo-induced discharge, could be prevented using appropriate measures. Objectives: To investigate caries risk assessment (CRA)-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices among dentists in China, to describe their subjective ratings of the significance of specific caries risk factors and to identify factors associated with the level of knowledge, attitudes, and use of CRA in routine clinical practice. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional anonymous online questionnaire survey was performed. The questionnaire was distributed via WeChat (Tencent, Shenzhen, China) to practicing dentists between November 25 and December 25, 2021. For participant recruitment, we employed purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data were collected using a specialized web-based survey tool (www.wjx.cn) and analyzed with descriptive statistics and regression analyses. Results: A total of 826 valid questionnaires were collected. Only 292 (35.4%) respondents used CRA in routine practice, among whom a majority (243, 83.2%) did not use a specific CRA tool. The routine use of CRA was associated with the type of practicing office, attendance of caries-related lectures, the habit of reading caries-related literature, geographic location, and the total knowledge score. The mean total knowledge score was 3.13 (score range: 0 to 6). Knowledge levels were related to several sociodemographic characteristics, including geographic location, the type of practicing office, attendance of caries-related lectures and the habit of reading caries-related literature. The risk factor deemed most important was "current oral hygiene." Conclusions: Caries risk assessment has not widely entered clinical practice in China. The level of CRA-related knowledge among dentists was generally suboptimal. Clinical relevance: Strengthening CRA-related education may allow practitioners to develop a better understanding of caries risk assessment and hence promote its implementation. Dental caries is the most common communicable disease globally, affecting an estimated 2 billion people. The prevalence and severity of the disease are associated with social status, with Northern European countries having lower rates compared to Southern and Eastern European countries. Dental Public Health takes a population approach to care delivery, while General Dental Practice focuses on individual care. Prevention of dental caries is categorized as primary, secondary, and tertiary, with primary prevention being the most upstream approach. There is a need for ongoing efforts to improve oral health, particularly in high-risk populations, and evidence-based approaches such as the Common Risk approach and behavioral interventions are recommended. Purpose: To explore the techniques used to manage carious primary teeth during the COVID-19 pandemic by paediatric dentists and dentists with a special interest in paediatric dentistry (DwSI) who are members of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) and the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD), and their views on the use of minimal intervention dentistry (MID) in children prior to, during and post the COVID era. Methods: A total of 212 paediatric dentists and DwSI completed an online questionnaire. Six MID techniques were explored: fissure sealants, resin infiltration, Hall Technique (HT), 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF), atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), stepwise removal and selective caries removal. Results: The majority were specialists (26%) followed by clinical academics (23.1%) working mainly in university teaching hospitals (46.2%). Routine dental treatment for children with carious primary teeth was provided by the majority (92.5%) during the pandemic. HT (96%) and 38% SDF (65.7%) were the most commonly used techniques among the BSPD members whereas conventional restoration of non-selective caries removal and pulp therapy remained the most widely used technique among the EAPD members (66.2%). Most of the MID techniques were used as a treatment option (48.1%) rather than a choice (43.4%), with most of these choices having been affected by the patient's behaviour (82.5%). More than one thirds (39.2%) of the participants were reluctant to adopt MID after the pandemic. Several barriers such as lack of teaching and confidence as well as perceived lack of evidence were identified. Conclusion: A range of MID techniques is practiced broadly by a sample of paediatric dentists and DwSI across the United Kingdom (U.K) and European Union (E.U). The majority of clinicians are willing to continue using these techniques going forward after COVID restrictions are lifted. Objective: To report radiographic characteristics of a case of a patient with neurofibromatosis involving the maxillomandibular complex and to point out other dental radiographic characteristics that are found in the scientific literature to help the dentist when faced with a case of neurofibromatosis. Short communication: Male, 31 years old, referred for radiographic examination. During anamnesis and physical examination, lesions were noted, which were papules and café-au-lait patches larger than 1 cm on the trunk and upper limbs, further to Lisch nodules (brown spots on the iris) and axillary and inguinal ephelides. When investigating the history of the disease, the patient reported the presence of such skin atlterations since birth and mentioned that his mother had been diagnosed with neurofibromatosis. During radiographic evaluation, a significant increase in the caliber of the mandibular canal and mental foramen was observed, bilaterally. Conclusion: Completing the combination of skin characteristics present in the patient, anamnesis data and current history of the disease with interpretation of radiographic alterations, it was possible to arrive at the diagnostic hypothesis of Neurofibromatosis type 1 and correct clinical management. Therefore, it is extremely important for the dentist to be aware of the clinical, physical and radiographic characteristics that this condition presents for the correct management and success of dental treatment. Background: Pediatric dentists in Egypt are exposed to chronic stress associated with pediatric dental care. After long years of specialization, training, and practice, they seem to be unsatisfied. An increased prevalence of burnout could be the reason. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of occupational burnout among Egyptian pediatric dentists. This study is a cross-sectional, observational study, which was carried by a self-administered online survey questionnaire that was sent to active members in the Egyptian Pediatric Dentistry Associations. A total number of 100 pediatric dentists participated in this study. All of them were offered to fulfill the questionnaires including that of Maslach Burnout Inventory and the semi-structured questionnaire to complete their sociodemographic and work-related data. Results: It was found that the number of kids raised up by the practitioner is significantly associated with the level of depersonalization. It was also found that the number of working hours per week and number of patients treated per day have a significant association with the level of exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. There were no gender differences in the prevalence of burnout or depression. Conclusions: Burnout prevalence among pediatric dentist in Egypt is high and higher than its prevalence among other dentists. Marriage and sleeping in home with the family have protective effects against burnout statistically. Background: Acute Leukaemias are haematological disorders characterised by the proliferation of immature white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or peripheral blood. Oral manifestations of leukaemia are common and may be the first sign of the disease. The clinical presentation of these Acute Leukaemias may include neutropenic sepsis, hyperviscocity and coagulopathy which confer a potential morbidity and mortality. Clinicians must be able to recognise this pattern of presentation. Case report: We report a 34-year-old female who was referred to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery department with acute dental pain and pericoronitis. She subsequently had a simple dental extraction but re-presented with a bleeding socket that did not respond to local treatment. Investigation of this led to a diagnosis of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). She was admitted under the care of the haematology team for urgent, life-saving, treatment. Conclusions: Early diagnosis and treatment of the Acute Leukaemias can be life saving. The oral manifestations of disease are common and may be the first sign. Clinicians must be able to recognise this pattern of presentation and arrange urgent investigation and specialist management. Clinical/CPD relevance: This case report discusses leukaemia and highlights the important role General Dental Practitioners can play in early diagnosis. Purpose: To assess the effect of parenthood on the clinician's empathy and behavior guidance practices among pediatric dentists. Methods: A web-based questionnaire was sent to all registered pediatric dentists in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry through the AAPD mailing list. The questionnaire consisted of three main components, the sociodemographic data of the participants including age, gender, years of clinical experience, marital status, having children and number of children if applicable. The second section was designed to assess the clinician's empathy. The final part contained multiple choice questions of the dentist's past and current behavior guidance technique utilization. Results: A total of 432 responses were received. Parent pediatric dentists demonstrated significantly better compassionate care than non-parent dentists. Female participants showed statistically significantly higher scores in overall empathy, and compassionate care. Furthermore, pediatric dentists report better comfortability with behavior guidance techniques after having children. Conclusion: Parenthood may impact the pediatric dentists' compassionate care; however, it does not seem to have an effect on his/her overall empathy. Aim: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of a self-reported history of restraint in children and adolescents when receiving dental care by non-specialist dentists and to assess differences in dental fear and anxiety (DFA), intra-oral injection fear, and trust in dentists between patients with and without a self-reported history of restraint. Methods: An electronic cross-sectional survey was distributed to all 9 years old (n = 6686) and 17 years old (n = 6327) in the Public Dental Service in Hordaland County, Norway, in 2019. For statistical evaluation, we generated descriptive statistics and Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: The response rate ranged between 43.5 and 59.9% for the different questions. The prevalence of a self-reported history of being held still against one's will during dental treatment and pressured to undergo dental treatment against one's will was 3.6% and 5.1%, respectively. In general, these patients reported higher DFA, and higher intra-oral injection fear compared with those without such histories of restraint. Patients who had reported being held still against their will during dental treatment had significantly higher distrust in dentists than those who did not report restraint (p < 0.001). Conclusion: To feel pressured to receive dental treatment and to be held still against one's will overlap with the concepts of psychological and physical restraint. Patients with a self-reported history of restraint recorded significant differences in DFA, intra-oral injection fear, and trust in dentists compared to those who did not report restraint. Objectives: To investigate whether an educational intervention could improve antibiotic prescribing among Lebanese dentists and assess antibiotic prescribing patterns regarding international guidelines. Materials and methods: An interventional randomized controlled trial was conducted from the first of April to the end of August 2017. This was an oral presentation of about 20 min based on a review of the literature and the international guidelines. Sixty dentists specializing in oral dental surgery or general practitioners participated in this study. All the patients who took a consultation over 2 months were involved. Results: In this study, 950 antibiotic prescriptions were analyzed. A change was found only in antibiotics prescribed for tooth extraction and tooth extraction (impacted tooth). The intervention was impactful in raising the mean percentage of prescriptions compliant with indication and with the choice regarding antibiotics prescribed for prophylactic reasons. A dentist in the intervention group would have after the intervention period a mean percentage of prescriptions compliant with indication and with choice of 31.7% and 20.7%, respectively, above one in the control group. Despite the decrease in the overall number of antibiotics prescribed by dentists in the intervention group over time, this does not suggest that this was solely due to the effect of the intervention. Conclusion: This study highlights the importance of continuing medical education to optimize antibiotic use in dentistry. Objectives: To gather practice-based information about instrumentation during the second stage of periodontal therapy among the members of the European Federation of Periodontology. Methods: This survey was conducted to investigate periodontal instrumentation (e.g., frequency, instruments, their maintenance) during the second stage of periodontal therapy. Results: Questionnaires from 2008 responders actively involved in periodontal therapy (general dental practitioners, periodontists, and dental hygienists) were analyzed. The frequency of use of hand and mechanical instruments was similar during the second stage of periodontal therapy and 94.4% of the participants combined both. The most popular hand instruments were Gracey curettes, and the preferred mechanical devices were ultrasonic scalers. For the latter, mostly the combination of standard and micro/slim inserts was preferred (42.4%) over solely standard inserts (32.1%) or micro/slim inserts (25.5%). The wear of hand instruments was sytematically checked by 46.1% of the respondents and the wear of the inserts by 41.3%. The more experienced the dental professional, the more frequent the wear of the instruments and inserts was checked. Conclusion: The most popular periodontal instrumentation technique in clinical practice during the second stage of periodontal therapy is a combination of hand and mechanical instruments. Clinical relevance: Clinicians should check the wear of their instruments systematically to have the most performant instruments possible for periodontal instrumentation. Scientists should see the results of this questionnaire as an incentive to set up studies investigating whether the combination of hand and mechanical instruments, the preferred treatment method of clinicians, is better than either of these instruments alone. Purpose: The majority of suspected malignant changes in the oral mucosa are detected by dentists in private practice. Statements regarding the effectiveness of visual examination of the oral cavity for early detection are not necessarily transferable between different health care systems. Our clinical-epidemiological and methodological aim was thus to conduct a prospective regional study in dental practices under everyday conditions, assess the frequency and type of oral mucosal changes, and evaluate the dental examination methodology. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted, combining a feasibility study of early detection of oral cancer and its documentation with phase I 'modelling' to conceptualize complex interventions in health services research. Dentists in private practice continuously recruited patients over 6 months and used two different sheets for the documentation of suspicious lesions. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics and tests for differences (Welch test) or association (Chi-squared test). Results: Twenty-five dentists (mean age: 50 years, 24% females) participated in this study. Eleven dentists achieved the overall aim of recruiting 200 patients. Around 4200 patients (mean age: 52 years, 57.5% females) participated. The prevalence of suspicious lesions was 8.5%. Conclusion: It became apparent that a study in cooperation with dentists in private practice to generate clinical-epidemiological data on the early detection of oral mucosal lesions under everyday conditions can be carried out successfully. Further studies with a corresponding level of evidence should be carried out to be able to draw conclusions about the effectiveness of the early detection measure under everyday practice conditions. Background: Vaccine acceptance among healthcare workers (HCWs) is an important determinant of its acceptance among the general population. Dentists are an essential group of HCWs who are at an increased risk of COVID-19 infection. This study aimed to assess vaccine acceptance and its determinants among a group of dental teaching staff in Egypt. Methods: An Internet-based cross-sectional study was conducted where the dental teaching staff of a governmental university in Egypt were targeted using total population sampling. Data was collected on socio-demographics, attitudes towards COVID-19, risk perception, general attitudes towards vaccination, vaccine acceptance, and concerns about COVID-19 vaccines, along with barriers and motivators to vaccination. Multivariate regression was done to determine factors significantly associated with unwillingness to receive COVID-19 vaccine. Results: A total of 171 dental faculty members participated in the study. At the time of data collection (August 2021–October 2021), 45.6% of the dental teaching staff were willing to receive the vaccine, while 46.7% were against vaccination, and 7.6% were vaccine hesitant. Female gender, not having a private practice, not intending to travel internationally, having anyone sick in the immediate social circle, and being more anxious about COVID-19 were significantly associated with unwillingness to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Conclusion: At the time of conducting this study (August 2021–October 2021), less than half of the participating dental teaching staff in the studied Egyptian university were willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Findings of the current study can guide Egyptian health authorities to adopt strategies that correct misconceptions among HCWs, educate them and build their trust in the efficacy and safety of COVID-19 vaccines, which can ultimately increase its acceptance in the general population. Objective: To produce a guide for dentists and orthodontists to determine orthodontic treatment need in borderline cases (dental health component DHC 3) and to compare views of different panels of judges on treatment need. Materials and methods: Prospective, observational study. Photographs of one hundred subjects displaying borderline occlusal traits (DHC3) were collected. Three panels of judges consisting of 25 orthodontists, 25 dentists and 25 lay persons assessed photographs based on orthodontic treatment need on aesthetic grounds. Results: Spearman's correlation coefficient showed no statistical difference between the panels of judges (p < 0.001). The judges identified a 'high need' for treatment on aesthetic grounds for those with anterior open bites and reverse overjets. Kappa analysis showed moderate intra-rater agreement for the orthodontic and dental panels of judges (k = 0.47 and 0.45, respectively) and fair agreement (k = 0.26) for the lay panel, highlighting the intrinsic difficulty of assessing borderline malocclusions. Conclusion: There was no statistical difference in the way the orthodontic, dental and lay panels of judges perceived treatment need for DHC 3 cases. Anterior open bites and reverse overjets were predominantly found to be in high need of treatment by all panels of judges. A 'Guide to Borderline Orthodontic Need' (GBON) is proposed consisting of 8 photographs of subjects with borderline occlusal traits (DHC3) determined unambiguously by lay, dental and orthodontic panels as either 'needing' or 'not needing' orthodontic treatment on aesthetic grounds. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the oral findings and dentomaxillofacial involvement of patients diagnosed with Type I Gaucher Disease (GD), and to compare these findings with the control group. Methods: A total of 32 patients, 5 males, and 11 females in both the study (range 19–60, mean age 34.56) and control group (range 18–49, mean age 34.63) were included in the study. The file records of all patients obtained in the first evaluation were examined, and the hematological, visceral, and bone examination findings were recorded. Subsequently, oral examinations were performed for oral findings and dentomaxillofacial involvement, and radiological examinations were performed in panoramic images and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Results: There was mandible involvement in 9 (56.3%), and involvement in both jaws in 4 (25.0%) of the patients with Type I GD. According to the CBCT findings, generalized rarefaction in 10 (62.5%) patients, enlarged marrow spaces in 12 (75.0%) patients, thinning of the lamina dura in 10 (62.5%) patients, and loss in the cortical borders of the mandibular canal in 7 (43.8%) patients were among the common radiographic findings. When the control and study group were compared, in panoramic images, a significant difference was found in terms of generalized rarefaction and enlarged marrow spaces, while significant differences were found in CBCT images regarding generalized rarefaction, enlarged marrow spaces, loss in the cortical margins of the mandibular canal and widening in the periodontal ligament space. Conclusions: The roadmap for the diagnosis of Gaucher lesions in the jawbones includes a comprehensive medical history and a clinical and radiological examination. Introduction: Periodontal disease is a common inflammation worldwide and is not only the foremost cause of tooth loss but also a cause of deterioration of glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus. In addition, effective glycemic management improves the control of periodontitis infection. The aim of this study was to clarify whether awareness of the need to refer their patients with diabetes to dentists differs between general practitioners and diabetes specialists. This was achieved by secondary analysis of data from the 2018 Nationwide Survey on Actual Intervention for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) by Japanese Practitioners (NSAID Study). Methods: Data from 380 general practitioners and 79 diabetes specialists who participated in the NSAID study and responded to the question of whether they referred T2DM patients to the dentist were analyzed in this study. Results: The proportion of general practitioners who referred T2DM patients to dentists was significantly lower than that of diabetes specialists (35.4% vs. 64.1%, respectively). Conclusion: This result suggests that the general practitioners who participated in this study were less cognizant of oral hygiene in patients with diabetes than those who specialized in diabetes. It is also necessary to increase the opportunities for education of physicians who provide diabetic care to promote appropriate dental referrals. Aim: The main purpose of the study is to assess the awareness of a group of Egyptians about COVID-19 infection and their perception of the role of dentists in its prevention. Subjects and methods: An observational cross-sectional survey included 74 participants who attended Minia University Dental Hospital, Minia City, Egypt, from 10 March to 2 April 2020. A face-to-face interview using an anonymous questionnaire was carried out in this study. The questionnaire contained 20 questions divided into three parts; the first part included the participants' baseline characteristics. The second part analyzed the participants' awareness of COVID-19 infection through ten questions. Finally, four questions outlined participants' perception of the role of dentists in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Results: Overall participant awareness was adequate at 55.4%. The percentages of "good" and "poor" overall awareness scores were 40.5% and 4.1%, respectively. Most respondents' perception of dentists' role in COVID-19 prevention was poor. All baseline characteristics showed no statistically significant difference related to the participants' awareness about COVID-19 infection and its spread (p > 0.05). Conclusion: From the findings of the present pilot study, it can be concluded that the general population's awareness of COVID-19 infection and its route of transmission was adequate. Objectives: Evaluate the need for re-intervention on dental coronal restorations in adults seen in a network of general dental practitioners (ReCOL). Materials and methods: This observational, cross-sectional, multicenter study involved 40 practitioners and 400 patients. Coronal restoration failures (needing re-intervention for unsatisfactory outcomes) were assessed with a simplified rating scale of seven criteria from the FDI World Dental Federation. The oral health status, the risk factors, and Oral Health Impact Profile-14 were also examined. Previous restoration characteristics (extent, technique, material) were analyzed according to the need for re-intervention (yes/no), the age group, and the risk profile. Qualitative variables were compared between "re-intervention" and "no re-intervention" group using Fisher exact test. Results: The need for re-intervention was estimated at 74% (95% CI: 70; 79); it increased with age (49 to 90%), unfavorable risk profile (82 vs. 62%), and extent of the filling (32, 39, 44, and 44% on 1, 2, 3 surfaces, and crowns, respectively). More posterior than anterior teeth were restored (median per patient: 6 vs. 1) or needed re-intervention (median per patient: 1 vs. 0). Conclusions: The needs for re-intervention in adults are still high within a context of ever-changing materials and techniques, simplified and rationalized decision-makings, and demands for patient involvement. Clinical relevance: Meeting these needs requires the following: (i) consensus definitions and assessment methods for "failure" and (ii) reliable feedbacks on materials, procedures, and satisfaction. Building large and detailed databases fed by networks of motivated practitioners will help analyzing complex success/failure data by artificial intelligence and guiding treatment and research. Background: Molar-Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH) is a prevalent clinical condition which is associated with a high burden of disease. The present study aimed to assess and compare the knowledge, perceptions, and clinical experience of general dental practitioners (GDPs), pediatric dentists (PDs), and other dental specialists (DSs) in Egypt about MIH. Methods: Online and paper-based survey administration methods were used to collect the responses from Egyptian dentists regarding their knowledge, and perceptions about MIH. The survey tool focused on participants' socio-demographics, clinical experience, perceptions, clinical management, and preferences for further training. The level of knowledge regarding MIH was compared among the three groups. Data analysis utilized Chi-square and one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test using SPSS® Statistics Version 26. Results: The majority of respondents had observed MIH in their practice (86%). The participants who had a postgraduate degree had a significantly higher knowledge score value (51.01 ± 5.74) than GDPs (43.05 ± 7.04) (p < 0.001). PDs (51.13 ± 4.76) had a significantly higher knowledge score value than other DSs (50.91 ± 6.46) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Dissemination of evidence on MIH to dental practitioners especially to GDPs is highly needed to assure confidence in MIH diagnosis at an early stage when it can be best managed. In this study, a novel AI system based on deep learning methods was evaluated to determine its real-time performance of CBCT imaging diagnosis of anatomical landmarks, pathologies, clinical effectiveness, and safety when used by dentists in a clinical setting. The system consists of 5 modules: ROI-localization-module (segmentation of teeth and jaws), tooth-localization and numeration-module, periodontitis-module, caries-localization-module, and periapical-lesion-localization-module. These modules use CNN based on state-of-the-art architectures. In total, 1346 CBCT scans were used to train the modules. After annotation and model development, the AI system was tested for diagnostic capabilities of the Diagnocat AI system. 24 dentists participated in the clinical evaluation of the system. 30 CBCT scans were examined by two groups of dentists, where one group was aided by Diagnocat and the other was unaided. The results for the overall sensitivity and specificity for aided and unaided groups were calculated as an aggregate of all conditions. The sensitivity values for aided and unaided groups were 0.8537 and 0.7672 while specificity was 0.9672 and 0.9616 respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups (p = 0.032). This study showed that the proposed AI system significantly improved the diagnostic capabilities of dentists. Aim: The aim of this study is to gather baseline information on knowledge, perceptions, clinical experience and treatment options regarding MIH among dental care providers in Oslo, Norway, before a larger epidemiological study. Methods: An electronic questionnaire was distributed to dentists (n = 88) and dental hygienists (n = 47) working in the Public Dental Service (PDS) in Oslo. The questionnaire consisted of five sections related to sociodemographic, clinical experience, perceptions, clinical management and preferences for further training. Descriptive statistics with chi-squared test was used, and level of statistical significance was set to 5%. Results: Replies were obtained from 74.1% (n = 100) after two reminders. All respondents encountered MIH in their practice. The respondents' perception of the prevalence of MIH in Oslo varied. The majority felt confident when diagnosing MIH (86%). The clinicians qualified in the last 10 years felt more confident than those who had qualified earlier (p = 0.016). Most were self-confident when treating these patients (68.3%), however, nearly all (88%) agreed that MIH was a clinical problem. The clinician's treatment of MIH varied. Difficulties achieving adequate local anaesthetic (71.4%) and the child's behavioural problems (84.1%) were treatment barriers for the dentists. Approximately two thirds (69%) would like further training, in particular on the aetiology (70%), diagnosis (57%) and treatment (77%) of the developmental disorder. Conclusion: All clinicians were familiar with the diagnosis of MIH and experienced the condition to be a clinical problem.
