Significance: The reliability of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measurements is reduced by systemic physiology. Short-channel regression algorithms aim at removing systemic “noise” by subtracting the signal measured at a short source–detector separation (mainly scalp hemodynamics) from the one of a long separation (brain and scalp hemodynamics). In literature, incongruent approaches on the selection of the optimal regressor signal are reported based on different assumptions on scalp hemodynamics properties. Aim: We investigated the spatial and temporal distribution of scalp hemodynamics over the sensorimotor cortex and evaluated its influence on the effectiveness of short-channel regressions. Approach: We performed hand-grasping and resting-state experiments with five subjects, measuring with 16 optodes over sensorimotor areas, including eight 8-mm channels. We performed detailed correlation analyses of scalp hemodynamics and evaluated 180 hand-grasping and 270 simulated (overlaid on resting-state measurements) trials. Five short-channel regressor combinations were implemented with general linear models. Three were chosen according to literature, and two were proposed based on additional physiological assumptions [considering multiple short channels and their Mayer wave (MW) oscillations]. Results: We found heterogeneous hemodynamics in the scalp, coming on top of a global close-to-homogeneous behavior (correlation 0.69 to 0.92). The results further demonstrate that short-channel regression always improves brain activity estimates but that better results are obtained when heterogeneity is assumed. In particular, we highlight that short-channel regression is more effective when combining multiple scalp regressors and when MWs are additionally included. Conclusion: We shed light on the selection of optimal regressor signals for improving the removal of systemic physiological artifacts in fNIRS. We conclude that short-channel regression is most effective when assuming heterogeneous hemodynamics, in particular when combining spatial- and frequency-specific information. A better understanding of scalp hemodynamics and more effective short-channel regression will promote more accurate assessments of functional brain activity in clinical and research settings., Neurophotonics, 7 (03)

The goal of understanding the architecture of neural circuits at the synapse level with a brain-wide perspective has powered the interest in high-speed and large field-of-view volumetric imaging at subcellular resolution. Here, we developed a method combining tissue expansion and light-sheet fluorescence microscopy to allow extended volumetric super resolution high-speed imaging of large mouse brain samples. We demonstrate the capabilities of this method by performing two color fast volumetric super resolution imaging of mouse CA1 and dentate gyrus molecular-, granule cell-, and polymorphic layers. Our method enables an exact evaluation of granule cell and neurite morphology within the context of large cell ensembles spanning several orders of magnitude in resolution. We found that imaging a brain region of 1 mm 3 in super resolution using light-sheet fluorescence expansion microscopy is about 17-fold faster than imaging the same region by a current state-of-the-art high-resolution confocal laser scanning microscope.

New increasingly complex in vitro cancer cell models are being developed. These new models seem to represent the cell behavior in vivo more accurately and have better physiological relevance than prior models. An efficient testing method for selecting the most optimal drug treatment does not exist to date. One proposed solution to the problem involves isolation of cancer cells from the patients' cancer tissue, after which they are exposed to potential drugs alone or in combinations to find the most optimal medication. To achieve this goal, methods that can efficiently quantify and analyze changes in tested cell are needed. Our study aimed to detect and segment cells and structures from cancer cell cultures grown on vascular structures in phase-contrast microscope images using U-Net neural networks to enable future drug efficacy assessments. We cultivated prostate carcinoma cell lines PC3 and LNCaP on the top of a matrix containing vascular structures. The cells were imaged with a Cell-IQ phase-contrast microscope. Automatic analysis of microscope images could assess the efficacy of tested drugs. The dataset included 36 RGB images and ground-truth segmentations with mutually not exclusive classes. The used method could distinguish vascular structures, cells, spheroids, and cell matter around spheroids in the test images. Some invasive spikes were also detected, but the method could not distinguish the invasive cells in the test images. publishedVersion

Significance: Parallel phase-shifting digital holographic microscope (PPSDHM) is powerful for three-dimensional (3D) measurements of dynamic specimens. However, the PPSDHM reported previously was directly fixed on the optical bench and imposed difficulties case, thus it is required to modify the specification of the microscope or transport the microscope to another location. Aim: We present a modularized PPSDHM. We construct the proposed PPSDHM and demonstrate the 3D measurement capability of the PPSDHM. Approach: The PPSDHM was designed as an inverted microscope to record transparent objects and modularized by integrating the optical elements of the PPSDHM on an optical breadboard. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the PPSDHM, we recorded a 3D motion-picture of moving Volvoxes at 1000 frames/s and carried out 3D tracking of the Volvoxes. Results: The PPSDHM was practically realized and 3D images of objects were successfully reconstructed from holograms recorded with a single-shot exposure. The 3D trajectories of Volvoxes were obtained from the reconstructed images. Conclusions: We established a modularized PPSDHM that is capable of 3D image acquisition by integrating the optical elements of the PPSDHM on an optical breadboard. The recording capability of 3D motion-pictures of dynamic specimens was experimentally demonstrated by the PPSDHM.

Scanning laser ophthalmoscopes (SLOs) have the potential to perform high speed, high contrast, functional imaging of the human retina for diagnosis and follow-up of retinal diseases. Commercial SLOs typically use a monochromatic laser source or a superluminescent diode for imaging. Multispectral SLOs using an array of laser sources for spectral imaging have been demonstrated in research settings, with applications mainly aiming at retinal oxygenation measurements. Previous SLO-based oximetry techniques are predominantly based on wavelengths that depend on laser source availability. We describe an SLO system based on a supercontinuum (SC) source and a double-clad fiber using the single-mode core for illumination and the larger inner cladding for quasi-confocal detection to increase throughput and signal-to-noise ratio. A balanced detection scheme was implemented to suppress the relative intensity noise of the SC source. The SLO produced dual wavelength, high-quality images at 10 frames / s with a maximum 20 deg imaging field-of-view with any desired combination of wavelengths in the visible spectrum. We demonstrate SLO-based dual-wavelength oximetry in vessels down to 50 μm in diameter. Reproducibility was demonstrated by performing three different imaging sessions of the same volunteer, 8 min apart. Finally, by performing a wavelength sweep between 485 and 608 nm, we determined, for our SLO geometry, an approximately linear relationship between the effective path length of photons through the blood vessels and the vessel diameter..

In this paper key challenges posed on metrology by feature dimensions of 20nm and below are discussed. In detail, the need for software-based tools for SEM image acquisition and image analysis in environments where CD-SEMs are not available and/or not flexible enough to cover all inspection tasks is outlined. These environments include research at universities as well as industrial R and D environments focused on non-IC applications. The benefits of combining automated image acquisition and analysis with computational techniques to simulate image generation in a conventional analytical SEM with respect to the overall reliability, precision and speed of inspection will be demonstrated using real-life inspection tasks as demonstrators.

pA stable multimodal system is developed by combining two common-path digital holographic microscopes (DHMs): coherent and incoherent, for simultaneous recording and retrieval of three-dimensional (3-D) phase and 3-D fluorescence imaging (FI), respectively, of a biological specimen. The 3-D FI is realized by a single-shot common-path off-axis fluorescent DHM developed recently by our group. In addition, we accomplish, the phase imaging by another single-shot, highly stable common-path off-axis DHM based on a beam splitter. In this DHM configuration, a beam splitter is used to divide the incoming object beam into two beams. One beam serves as the object beam carrying the useful information of the object under study, whereas another beam is spatially filtered at its Fourier plane by using a pinhole and it serves as a reference beam. This DHM setup, owing to a common-path geometry, is less vibration-sensitive and compact, having a similar field of view but with high temporal phase stability in comparison to a two-beam Mach-Zehnder-type DHM. The performance of the proposed common-path DHM and the multimodal system is verified by conducting various experiments on fluorescent microspheres and fluorescent protein-labeled living cells of the mossitalicPhyscomitrella patens/italic. Moreover, the potential capability of the proposed multimodal system for 3-D live fluorescence and phase imaging of the fluorescent beads is also demonstrated. The obtained experimental results corroborate the feasibility of the proposed multimodal system and indicate its potential applications for the analysis of functional and structural behaviors of a biological specimen and enhancement of the understanding of physiological mechanisms and various biological diseases./p.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is currently being used for research and treatment of some neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, as well as for improvement of cognitive functions. In order to better understand cerebral response to the stimulation and to redefine protocols and dosage, its effects must be monitored. To this end, we have used functional diffuse correlation spectroscopy (fDCS) and time-resolved functional near-infrared spectroscopy (TR-fNIRS) together with electroencephalography (EEG) during and after stimulation of the frontal cortex. Twenty subjects participated in two sessions of stimulation with two different polarity montages and twelve also underwent a sham session. Cerebral blood flow and oxyhemoglobin concentration increased during and after active stimulation in the region under the stimulation electrode while deoxyhemoglobin concentration decreased. The EEG spectrum displayed statistically significant power changes across different stimulation sessions in delta (2 to 4 Hz), theta (4 to 8 Hz), and beta (12 to 18 Hz) bands. Results suggest that fDCS and TR-fNIRS can be employed as neuromonitors of the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation and can be used together with EEG.

A frequent quantification of drugs concentrations in plasma of patients subject to chemotherapy is seldom performed, mostly because the standard methods (Gas or Liquid Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectroscopy) are expensive and time consuming. In this paper we report the approach pursued in one of the research units of the EU project RAMAN4CLINICS to tackle the problem of a low cost, time adherent quantification of drugs used for oncological patients using a Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. More specifically, the issues concerning the repeatability of the nanostructured substrates will be presented and some promising results to increase the selectivity of the measures toward specific drugs will be discussed, with examples concerning one cytotoxic agent, Irinotecan and one kinase inhibitor, Sunitinib.

Media assets shared via social media can rapidly spread, even if they do not present a true representation of reality. The assets might have been manipulated with photo editing software, artificially created using deep learning techniques or used out of context. At the same time, editing software and deep learning techniques can be used for creative or educational media production. Clear annotation of media modifications is considered to be a crucial element to allow users to assess trustworthiness of media. However, these annotations should be attached in a secure way to prevent them from being compromised. Various organizations have already developed mechanisms that can detect and annotate modified media assets. However, to achieve a wide adoption of such an annotation approach, interoperability is essential. Therefore, the JPEG Committee has initiated the so-called JPEG Fake Media exploration. The objective of this initiative is to produce a standard that can facilitate a secure and reliable annotation of media asset creation and modifications. The standard shall support usage scenarios that are in good faith as well as those with malicious intent. This paper gives an overview of the history in media manipulation, discusses state-of-the-art in media forensics and in the creative industry as well as challenges related to AI-based manipulated media detection methods. In addressing these challenges, the paper introduces the JPEG Fake Media initiative as a provenance-based sustainable approach to secure and trustworthy media annotation.

The visual appearance of a painting is the result of variations in pigments, layers and layer thicknesses. An important role can be played by ground colour. The ground is the first preparation of the support before the actual painting. Medieval painters worked on white grounds. Coloured grounds appeared during the late 15th century in Italy before spreading to the northern part of Europe around 1550. Painters like Rembrandt or Rubens exploited dark or light coloured grounds to create spectacular, realistic effects. But how can we understand how they do this? To answer this question and add some quantifiable analysis, one needs to resolve the spectral reflectivity profile of a painting in three spatial dimensions. In addition, as the main intent is to relate the optical effects with colours, one needs to operate using visible light. The answer to these challenges is visible-light Optical Coherence Tomography (vis-OCT). In this study, we investigate the use of vis-OCT to measure the reflectivity profile of multi-layered paint samples in three dimensions. Using mock-up paint samples we prepared with two thin paint layers on a black and a white paper support, we measured the reflectivity profiles of the separate colours and of the superposed colours over either the black or white (back)ground. This paper first describes the signal processing involved in rebuilding the spectral reflectivity in three dimensions. Secondly, we will present the results obtained from the mock-up samples and draw conclusions on the possibility to discriminate colours in a three-dimensional context. All reflectivity measurements will be compared to a classical, commercially available hyperspectral imaging setup. This study is executed in the context of the NWO Down to the Ground Project. The results of the OCT measurements will be used by technical art historians and conservators for investigations into coloured grounds.

The COVID-19 (2019 novel Coronavirus) is the most widespread pandemic infectious disease encountered in human history. Its economic losses and the number of countries involved rank first in the history of human viruses. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world, AI has made a great contribution to the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, researches on the application of artificial intelligence in COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control were analyzed by informetric method. 432 papers indexed in Thomson Reuters's Web of Science were studied by the perspectives of categories of researches, high frequency keywords, authors, institutions, journals and countries, and we get conclusions as follows: The analysis of keywords cooccurence shows application of machine learning and deep learning in COVID-19 pandemic diagnosis and prediction. The journal that received the most cites was (Radiology) and the journal that published the most papers was (Journal of Medical Internet Research). USA, India and China have the largest number of published articles. USA, China and UK are most influential countries. We also analyzed the review literature on the application of AI in COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control in the Web of Science, and found that these papers specifically can be divided into the following three categories: The first is the application of AI in clinical diagnosis and treatment, the second is the application of AI in the development of anti-epidemic drugs, and the third is the role of AI in the epidemiological research of COVID-19 and the social governance of pandemic prevention and control.

Inkjet-printed surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors are fabricated on cellulose based paper or fabric substrates. These flexible sensors provides basic point-of-sampling advantages that is particularly useful in field applications. Due to the heterogeneous loading of nanoparticles on the substrate, SERS intensities inevitably vary across the active area of the printed sensor. This paper will discuss the use of receiver operating characteristics (ROC) for the analysis of inkjet-printed SERS sensors. The aim is to provide an alternative measurand to the SERS enhancement factor that can be used to compare different types of SERS substrates. We have developed statistical analysis from multiple data sets obtained from sensors exposed to both analyte and control to determine the probability of positive detection (PD) at various analyte concentration. This dependence describes the ROC of the sensor and also provides confidence level associated with a given detection limit. Supervised deep learning algorithms are re-defining the state-of-the-art for object detection and classification. However, training these algorithms requires extensive datasets that are typically expensive and time-consuming to collect. In the field of defence and security, this can become impractical when data is of a sensitive nature, such as infrared imagery of military vessels. Consequently, algorithm development and training are often conducted in synthetic environments, but this brings into question the generalisability of the solution to real world data. In this paper we investigate training deep learning algorithms for infrared automatic target recognition without using real-world infrared data. A large synthetic dataset of infrared images of maritime vessels in the long wave infrared waveband was generated using target-missile engagement simulation software and ten high-fidelity computer-aided design models. Multiple approaches to training a YOLOv3 architecture were explored and subsequently evaluated using a video sequence of real-world infrared data. Experiments demonstrated that supplementing the training data with a small sample of semi-labelled pseudo-IR imagery caused a marked improvement in performance. Despite the absence of real infrared training data, high average precision and recall scores of 99% and 93% respectively were achieved on our real-world test data. To further the development and benchmarking of automatic target recognition algorithms this paper also contributes our dataset of photo-realistic synthetic infrared images.

Development of engineering user interfaces for a radiotelescope can greatly benefit from a Lean UX approach. In this paper we analyse the situation for the SKA project, a very large endeavour that involves dozens of agile teams, hundreds of developers and many more stakeholders, for a system whose lifespan will be several decades. The paper describes how we are establishing a Lean UX process appropriate for the current stage of the SKA project. We outline the four major challenges that need to be overcome, and that constitute our starting point for defining the overall goals characterizing the desirable process. On this basis, we present the adoption plan. The Lean UX process we envision is suitable for developing software for a very complex social and technical collaboration such as SKA where software is being developed with a quite sophisticated agile framework. Similar decisions are likely to be made on many large scientific projects that are developed with agile methods.

Over the years, many shape sensing methods have been developed with technologies including optical fibre, PZT and fringe projection. Among them, optical fibres have gained a lot of attention due to their unobtrusive nature when either surface mounted or embedded in the structure. Optical fibre Bragg gratings (FBG) are currently employed for structural health monitoring in civil and aerospace systems and their shape sensing capabilities have been previously reported. In this paper, we propose a novel fibre optic based shape sensor of an isotropic cantilever beam based on the principles of interferometry and FBG sensing. The method described in this paper uses a standard single core single-mode optical fibre and the least number of sensors to estimate the shape, making it comparatively an inexpensive sensing method. On displacing the beam with an unknown magnitude and at an unknown location along the beam, we are able to demonstrate that we can measure the shape of the displaced beam and the magnitude and location of the force applied. The analysis involves using a calibration method and an iterative calculation to measure the two unknowns. An analytical model based on the known beam theories was used to assess the accuracy of the measurements. The preliminary analysis yielded an accuracy of ±1 mm and ±50 mm for the displacement and location, respectively.

In our previous work, we demonstrated how to use inductive bias to infuse a convolutional neural network (CNN) with domain knowledge from fatigue analysis for aircraft visual NDE. We extend this concept to SHM and therefore in this paper, we present a novel framework called DeepSHM which involves data augmentation of captured sensor signals and formalizes a generic method for end-to-end deep learning for SHM. The study case is limited to ultrasonic guided waves SHM. The sensor signal response from a Finite-Element-Model (FEM) is pre-processed through wavelet transform to obtain the wavelet coefficient matrix (WCM), which is then fed into the CNN to be trained to obtain the neural weights. In this paper, we present the results of our investigation on CNN complexities that is needed to model the sensor signals based on simulation and experimental testing within the framework of DeepSHM concept.

ATHENA is a Large high energy astrophysics space mission selected by ESA in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 Science Program. It will be equipped with two interchangeable focal plane detectors: the X-Ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) and the Wide Field Imager (WFI). Both detectors require x-ray transparent filters to fully exploit their sensitivity. In order to maximize the X-ray transparency, filters must be very thin, from a few tens to few hundreds of nm, on the other hand, they must be strong enough to survive the severe launch stresses. In particular, the WFI OBF, being launched in atmospheric pressure, shall also survive acoustic loads. In this paper, we present a review of the structural modeling performed to assist the ATHENA filters design, the preliminary results from vibration and acoustic tests, and we discuss future activities necessary to consolidate the filters design, before the preliminary requirement review of the ATHENA instruments, scheduled before the end of 2018.

The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) project has completed its Conceptual Design Phase. This paper is a status report of the MSE project regarding its technical and programmatic progress. The technical status includes its conceptual design and system performance, and highlights findings and recommendations from the System and various subsystems design reviews. The programmatic status includes the project organization and management plan for the Preliminary Design Phase. This paper proposes a method to reduce the number of false-positives (FP) in a computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme for automated detection of architectural distortion (AD) in digital mammography. AD is a subtle contraction of breast parenchyma that may represent an early sign of breast cancer. Due to its subtlety and variability, AD is more difficult to detect compared to microcalcifications and masses, and is commonly found in retrospective evaluations of false-negative mammograms. Several computer-based systems have been proposed for automated detection of AD in breast images. The usual approach is automatically detect possible sites of AD in a mammographic image (segmentation step) and then use a classifier to eliminate the false-positives and identify the suspicious regions (classification step). This paper focus on the optimization of the segmentation step to reduce the number of FPs that is used as input to the classifier. The proposal is to use statistical measurements to score the segmented regions and then apply a threshold to select a small quantity of regions that should be submitted to the classification step, improving the detection performance of a CAD scheme. We evaluated 12 image features to score and select suspicious regions of 74 clinical Full-Field Digital Mammography (FFDM). All images in this dataset contained at least one region with AD previously marked by an expert radiologist. The results showed that the proposed method can reduce the false positives of the segmentation step of the CAD scheme from 43.4 false positives (FP) per image to 34.5 FP per image, without increasing the number of false negatives.

State-of-the-art light field (LF) image coding solutions, usually, rely in one of two LF data representation formats: Lenslet or 4D LF. While the Lenslet data representation is a more compact version of the LF, it requires additional camera metadata and processing steps prior to image rendering. On the contrary, 4D LF data, consisting of a stack of sub-aperture images, provides a more redundant representation requiring, however, minimal side information, thus facilitating image rendering. Recently, JPEG Pleno guidelines on objective evaluation of LF image coding defined a processing chain that allows to compare different 4D LF data codecs, aiming to facilitate codec assessment and benchmark. Thus, any codec that does not rely on the 4D LF representation needs to undergo additional processing steps to generate an output comparable to a reference 4D LF image. These additional processing steps may have impact on the quality of the reconstructed LF image, especially if color subsampling format and bit depth conversions have been performed. Consequently, the influence of these conversions needs to be carefully assessed as it may have a significant impact on a comparison between different LF codecs. Very few in-depth comparisons on the effects of using existing LF representation have been reported. Therefore, using the guidelines from JPEG Pleno, this paper presents an exhaustive comparative analysis of these two LF data representation formats in terms of LF image coding efficiency, considering different color subsampling formats and bit depths. These comparisons are performed by testing different processing chains to encode and decode the LF images. Experimental results have shown that, in terms of coding efficiency for different color subsampling formats, the Lenslet LF data representation is more efficient when using YUV 4:4:4 with 10 bit/sample, while the 4D LF data representation is more efficient when using YUV 4:2:0 with 8 bit/sample. The “best” LF data representation, in terms of coding efficiency, depends on several factors which are extensively analyzed in this paper, such as the objective metric that is used for comparison (e.g., average PSNR-Y or average PNSR-YUV), the type of LF content, as well as the color format. The maximum objective quality is also determined, by evaluating the influence of each block from each processing chain in the objective quality of the reconstructed LF image. Experimental results show that, when the 4D LF data representation is not used the maximum achieved objective quality is lower than 50 dB, in terms of average PSNR-YUV. info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersion

This paper discusses the most relevant aspects of the practical implementation of a long-range Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) link with trusted nodes, achieving the highest possible secret key rate generation within the security and system level constraints. To this purpose, the implementation of an end-to-end QKD system will be discussed, including implementation aspects from physical transmission of photon states through a standard telecommunications grade optical fiber, to consideration of device imperfections, information reconciliation protocols. In addition, since there are circumstances when a fiber optical link may not be available, we will also discuss a test bench implementation of a Free Space Optics (FSO) QKD link. Furthermore, in spite of the fact that Discrete Variable QKD (DV-QKD) systems have reached a maturity level that allows their potential full realization and implementation for creation of a secure network backbone for key distribution in nations, in realistic links DV-QKD is really limited by technology and physical constraints associated with construction of reliable high rate single photon (or at least low photon count) sources, and of fast and reliable single photon detectors with very low dark count rates. In these cases, the use of Continuous Variable QKD (CV-QKD) schemes may be advantageous. For this reason the paper also discusses the problem of information reconciliation in CVQKD scenarios, showing that in long distance links the sign of the received Gaussian samples contains the largest fraction of information, leading to the design of an Unequal Error Protection (UEP) reverse reconciliation scheme.

Waste disposal and recycling is becoming one of the main problems in Western countries. Improving both recycling culture among citizenship and waste collection and treatment logistics is critical to augment the percentage of waste being recycled. In this paper we present STERLING, an initiative that aims to help in both fields. STERLING is a framework composed by a low-cost, low-energy sensor installed in recycling containers to measure fi ll level and other physical parameters. The sensor is activated magnetically each time the container lid is opened by a user. Instead of directly sending this information to a cloud-based server, our sensor broadcasts a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) packet to the surrounding area. An App running in the mobile phone of the user performs two actions: To capture this information, re-sending it to the cloud-based server, and to assign credit to this particular user for having used the recycling container. In this way, users are rewarded for using the container, and the infrastructure bene ts from cost-free communications from the container to the server. This paper reports testing results of radiation resilient fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in radiation resistant fibers in the nuclear reactor core at MIT Research Reactor Lab. FBGs were fabricated by 140-fs ultrafast laser pulse using a phase mask approach. In-core test of fiber Bragg gratings was carried out in the core region of a 6-MW research reactor at temperature > 600°C and an average fast neutron (>1 MeV) flux >1×1014 n/s/cm2. First 100-day tests of FBG sensors shows less than 5 dB reduction in FBG peak strength after over 1×1020 n/cm2 of accumulated fast neutron dosage. To test temporal responses of FBG sensors, a number of reactor anomaly events were artificially created to abruptly change reactor power, temperature, and neutron flux over short periods of time. The thermal optical coefficients and temporal responses of FBG sensors are determined at different accumulated dosages of neutron flux. While some of these patterns may be considered to have a self-supporting structure, this is not the case for some of the most frequently used patterns such as uniformly redundant arrays or any pattern with a high open fraction. This makes mask construction difficult and usually requires a compromise in its design by drilling holes or adopting a no two holes touching version of the original pattern. In this study, this compromise was avoided by 3D printing a support structure that was then filled with a radiopaque material to create the completed mask. The coded masks were manufactured using two different methods, hot cast and cold cast. Hot casting involved casting a bismuth alloy at 80°C into the 3D printed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene mould which produced an absorber with density of 8.6 g cm-3. Cold casting was undertaken at room temperature, when a tungsten/epoxy composite was cast into a 3D printed polylactic acid mould. The cold cast procedure offered a greater density of around 9.6 to 10 g cm-3 and consequently greater X-ray attenuation. It was also found to be much easier to manufacture and more cost effective. A critical review of the manufacturing procedure is presented along with some typical images. In both cases the 3D printing process allowed square apertures to be created avoiding their approximation by circular holes when conventional drilling is used.

In this paper we propose and investigate a novel magnetic field sensor based of a ring erbium-doped fiber laser combined with a fiber Bragg grating and a Sagnac loop containing a microfiber coupler and magnetic fluid. In addition to the magnetic field sensing capability, the proposed structure can simultaneously provide temperature information. Thanks to the dual-ring structure of the MFC-Sagnac loop and the FBG-assisted resonant cavity, the output has two distinct laser peaks. Experimentally demonstrated magnetic field sensitivity of one of the laser peaks is 15 pm/mT in the magnetic field range from 0 to 100 mT. The spectral position of the second laser peak is independent on the magnetic field but shifts towards long wavelengths with a sensitivity of 13 pm/°C.

The retinal vasculature is the only part of the blood circulation system that can be observed non-invasively using fundus cameras. Changes in the dynamic properties of retinal blood vessels are associated with many systemic and vascular diseases, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes. The assessment of the characteristics of the retinal vascular network provides important information for an early diagnosis and prognosis of many systemic and vascular diseases. The manual analysis of the retinal vessels and measurement of quantitative biomarkers in large-scale screening programs is a tedious task, time-consuming and costly. This paper describes a reliable, automated, and efficient retinal health information and notification system (acronym RHINO) which can extract a wealth of geometric biomarkers in large volumes of fundus images. The fully automated software presented in this paper includes vessel enhancement and segmentation, artery/vein classification, optic disc, fovea, and vessel junction detection, and bifurcation/crossing discrimination. Pipelining these tools allows the assessment of several quantitative vascular biomarkers: width, curvature, bifurcation geometry features and fractal dimension. The brain-inspired algorithms outperform most of the state-of-the-art techniques. Moreover, several annotation tools are implemented in RHINO for the manual labeling of arteries and veins, marking optic disc and fovea, and delineating vessel centerlines. The validation phase is ongoing and the software is currently being used for the analysis of retinal images from the Maastricht study (the Netherlands) which includes over 10,000 subjects (healthy and diabetic) with a broad spectrum of clinical measurements.

We present a first demonstration of a novel multi-parameter fiber optic (FO) sensor concept based on gold nanoparticles (GNP) embedded in a stimuli-responsive hydrogel material. A hemispherical hydrogel immobilized on the optical fiber end-face forms a low-finesse Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer. The GNPs exhibit local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) that is sensitive towards the refractive index of the surrounding environment, while the stimuli-responsive hydrogel is sensitive towards specific chemical compounds. We evaluate the quality of the interferometric and LSPR signal as a function GNP concentration and of hydrogel swelling degree stimulated by ethanol solutions. The GNPs shows to have little influence on the visibility of the FP etalon, while LSPR of GNP shows to be sensitive towards the surface refractive index rather than bulk refractive index. This demonstration shows that the sensor concept has the potential to be used in applications such as an intravenous two-parametric real-time sensor for medical purpose. © 2017 Society of Photo Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Visually lossless image coding in isochronous display streaming or plesiochronous networks reduces link complexity and power consumption and increases available link bandwidth. A new set of codecs developed within the last four years promise a new level of coding quality, but require new techniques that are sufficiently sensitive to the small artifacts or color variations induced by this new breed of codecs. This paper begins with a summary of the new ISO/IEC 29170-2, a procedure for evaluation of lossless coding and reports the new work by JPEG to extend the procedure in two important ways, for HDR content and for evaluating the differences between still images, panning images and image sequences. ISO/IEC 29170-2 relies on processing test images through a well-defined process chain for subjective, forced-choice psychophysical experiments. The procedure sets an acceptable quality level equal to one just noticeable difference. Traditional image and video coding evaluation techniques, such as, those used for television evaluation have not proven sufficiently sensitive to the small artifacts that may be induced by this breed of codecs. In 2015, JPEG received new requirements to expand evaluation of visually lossless coding for high dynamic range images, slowly moving images, i.e., panning, and image sequences. These requirements are the basis for new amendments of the ISO/IEC 29170-2 procedures described in this paper. These amendments promise to be highly useful for the new content in television and cinema mezzanine networks. The amendments passed the final ballot in April 2017 and are on track to be published in 2018.

In this paper we present an overview of the current efforts towards integration of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor interrogators. Different photonic integration platforms will be discussed, including monolithic planar lightwave circuit technology, silicon on insulator (SOI), indium phosphide (InP) and gallium arsenide (GaAs) material platforms. Also various possible techniques for wavelength metering and methods for FBG multiplexing will be discussed and compared in terms of resolution, dynamic performance, multiplexing capabilities and reliability. The use of linear filters, array waveguide gratings (AWG) as multiple linear filters and AWG based centroid signal processing techniques will be addressed as well as interrogation techniques based on tunable micro-ring resonators and Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) for phase sensitive detection. The paper will also discuss the challenges and perspectives of photonic integration to address the increasing requirements of several industrial applications.

This paper presents a new algorithm for 3D face tracking intended for clinical infant pain monitoring. The algorithm uses a cylinder head model and 3D head pose recovery by alignment of dynamically extracted templates based on dense-HOG features. The algorithm includes extensions for drift reduction, using re-registration in combination with multi-pose state estimation by means of a square-root unscented Kalman filter. The paper reports experimental results on videos of moving infants in hospital who are relaxed or in pain. Results show good tracking behavior for poses up to 50 degrees from upright-frontal. In terms of eye location error relative to inter-ocular distance, the mean tracking error is below 9%.

Volumetric Laser Endomicroscopy (VLE) is a promising technique for the detection of early dysplasia in Barrett's Esophagus (BE). VLE generates hundreds of high-resolution, grayscale, cross-sectional images of the esophagus.However, at present, classifying these images is a time consuming and cumbersome eort performed by an expert using a clinical prediction model. This paper explores the feasibility of using computer vision techniques to accurately predict the presence of dysplastic tissue in VLE BE images with known histology. Our contribution is twofold. First, a benchmarking is performed for widely applied machine learning techniques and feature extraction methods. Second, three new features based on the clinical detection model are proposed, with superior classication accuracy and execution speed, compared to earlier work. The results are evaluated on a clinically validated dataset of 30 dysplastic and 30 non-dysplastic VLE images with known histology. Optimal classication accuracy is obtained by applying Adaptive Boosting with decision trees and using our modied Haralick features, yielding an area under the receiver operating characteristic of 0.91 compared to the clinical prediction model at 0.81. In this paper we describe the characteristics and performances of a monolithic sensor designed for low frequency motion measurement of spacecrafts and satellites, whose mechanics is based on the UNISA Folded Pendulum. The latter, developed for ground-based applications, exhibits unique features (compactness, lightness, scalability, low resonance frequency and high quality factor), consequence of the action of the gravitational force on its inertial mass. In this paper we introduce and discuss the general methodology used to extend the application of ground-based folded pendulums to space, also in total absence of gravity, still keeping all their peculiar features and characteristics.

In this work we present Liborg, a spatial mapping and localization system that is able to acquire 3D models on the y using data originated from lidar sensors. The novelty of this work is in the highly efficient way we deal with the tremendous amount of data to guarantee fast execution times while preserving sufficiently high accuracy. The proposed solution is based on a multi-resolution technique based on octrees. The paper discusses and evaluates the main benefits of our approach including its efficiency regarding building and updating the map and its compactness regarding compressing the map. In addition, the paper presents a working prototype consisting of a robot equipped with a Velodyne Lidar Puck (VLP-16) and controlled by a Raspberry Pi serving as an independent acquisition platform.

The need to detect non-metallic items under clothes to prevent terrorism at transport hubs is becoming vital. Millimetre wave technology is able to penetrate clothing, yet able to interact with objects concealed underneath.This paper considers active illumination using multiple transmitter and receiver antennas. The positioning of these antennas must achieve full body coverage, whilst minimising the number of antenna elements and the number of required measurements. It sets out a rapid simulation methodology, based on the Kirchhoff equations, to explore different scenarios for scanner architecture optimisation.The paper assumes that the electromagnetic waves used are at lower frequencies (say, 10-30 GHz) where the body temperature does not need to be considered. This range allows better penetration of clothing than higher frequencies, yet still provides adequate resolution.Since passengers vary greatly in shape and size, the system needs to be able to work well with a range of body morphologies. Thus we have used two very differently shaped avatars to test the portal simulations. This simulation tool allows many different avatars to be generated quickly.Findings from these simulations indicated that the dimensions of the avatar did indeed have an effect on the pattern of illumination, and that the data for each antenna pair can easily be combined to compare different antenna geometries for a given portal architecture, resulting in useful insights into antenna placement. The data generated could be analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively, at various levels of scale.

This paper describes one of the issues that are facing the remote sensing community in the not so far future; scientists ask for certain requirement that cannot be fulfilled either due to cost issues or technological issues. The paper starts with giving a short and quick historical overview of the development of spectrometer based remote sensing systems. Next, the likely end of the spectrometers will be explained, followed by a possible alternative.

Active nanowires and nanofibers can be realized by the electric-field induced stretching of polymer solutions with sufficient molecular entanglements. The resulting nanomaterials are attracting an increasing attention in view of their application in a wide variety of fields, including optoelectronics, photonics, energy harvesting, nanoelectronics, and microelectromechanical systems. Realizing nanocomposite nanofibers is especially interesting in this respect. In particular, methods suitable for embedding inorganic nanocrystals in electrified jets and then in active fiber systems allow for controlling light-scattering and refractive index properties in the realized fibrous materials. We here report on the design, realization, and morphological and spectroscopic characterization of new species of active, composite nanowires and nanofibers for nanophotonics. We focus on the properties of light-confinement and photon transport along the nanowire longitudinal axis, and on how these depend on nanoparticle incorporation. Energy harvesting from galloping oscillations of a bluff body can be used to supply power to a wireless sensor. In this paper we investigate the possibility to use a galloping-based piezo-aeroelastic energy harvester to supply power to a wireless sensors network installed on a freight train to measure the accelerations in correspondence of axle boxes. The monitoring system will be used to detect possible deteriorations of the running conditions that, in the worst cases, can lead to the vehicle derailment. Unlike other applications in this case the air speed relative to the body is due to the train motion and, for typical freight trains and standard running conditions, is equal to about 20 m/s. In the paper we discuss the design of the harvester on the basis of the constrains due to the application. Preliminary aerodynamic tests shows the limitation of the classical quasi-steady theory of galloping as a consequence of the interaction with the vortex shedding phenomenon.

This paper reports on the progress related to a multichannel photonic alignment concept, aiming for sub-micrometer precision in the alignment of the waveguides of two photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The concept consists of two steps: chip-to-chip positioning and chip bonding provide a coarse alignment after which waveguide-to-waveguide positioning and fixing result in a fine alignment. For the waveguide-to-waveguide alignment, an alignment functionality is developed and integrated in one of the PICs, consisting of mechanically flexible waveguides and MEMS actuators. This paper reports on the fabrication and characterization of a mechanically flexible waveguide array that can be positioned by two out-of-plane actuators. Thermal actuators are integrated with mechanically flexible waveguide beams to enable positioning them with high precision. By adding a poly-Si pattern on top of SiO2 beams, an out-of-plane bimorph actuator can be realized. An analytical model enables estimating the curvature and the deflection of a single bimorph beam. Acquiring a small initial deflection while having a large motion range of the actuator proves to have conflicting demands on the poly-Si/SiO2 thickness ratio. In this paper, we show that suspended waveguide arrays with integrated alignment functionality have an initial deflection- they curl up- due to residual stress in the materials. The actuators can be operated using a driving voltage between 0V to 45V, corresponding to ∼50mW. Using higher voltages brings the risk of permanently changing the material properties of the heaters. The actuators can accomplish an out-of-plane crossbar translation up to 6.5 μm at ∼50mW as well as a rotation around the propagation direction of the light ranging from -0:1° to 0.1°. At a constant actuation power of ∼50mW, the crossbar shows a drift in vertical deflection of 0.16 μm over a time of 30 min.

This paper presents experimental work on the detection of spurious RF emissions of mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (mini-UAV). Many recent events have shown that mini-UAVs can be considered as a potential threat for civil security. For this reason the detection of mini-UAVs has become of interest to the sensor community. The detection, classification and identification chain can take advantage of different sensor technologies. Apart from the signatures used by radar and electro-optical sensor systems, the UAV also emits RF signals. These RF signatures can be split in intentional signals for communication with the operator and un-intentional RF signals emitted by the UAV. These unintentional or spurious RF emissions are very weak but could be used to discriminate potential UAV detections from false alarms. The goal of this research was to assess the potential of exploiting spurious emissions in the classification and identification chain of mini-UAVs. It was already known that spurious signals are very weak, but the focus was on the question whether the emission pattern could be correlated to the behaviour of the UAV. In this paper experimental examples of spurious RF emission for different types of mini-UAVs and their correlation with the electronic circuits in the UAVs will be shown. © 2016 SPIE. Owing to their ability to move a target in space without requiring propellant, laser-based deflection methods have gained attention among the research community in the recent years. With laser ablation, the vaporized material is used to push the target itself allowing for a significant reduction in the mass requirement for a space mission. Specifically, this paper addresses two important issues which are thought to limit seriously the potential efficiency of a laser-deflection method: the impact of the tumbling motion of the target as well as the impact of the finite thickness of the material ablated in the case of a space debris. In this paper, we developed a steady-state analytical model based on energetic considerations in order to predict the efficiency range theoretically allowed by a laser deflection system in absence of the two aforementioned issues. A numerical model was then implemented to solve the transient heat equation in presence of vaporization and melting and account for the tumbling rate of the target. This model was also translated to the case where the target is a space debris by considering material properties of an aluminium 6061-T6 alloy and adapting at every time-step the size of the computational domain along with the recession speed of the interface in order to account for the finite thickness of the debris component. The comparison between the numerical results and the analytical predictions allow us to draw interesting conclusions regarding the momentum coupling achievable by a given laser deflection system both for asteroids and space debris in function of the flux, the rotation rate of the target and its material properties. In the last section of this paper, we show how a reasonably small spacecraft could deflect a 56m asteroid with a laser system requiring less than 5kW of input power.

Recently several papers reported efficient techniques to compress digital holograms. Typically, the rate-distortion performance of these solutions was evaluated by means of objective metrics such as Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) or the Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) by either evaluating the quality of the decoded hologram or the reconstructed compressed hologram. Seen the specific nature of holograms, it is relevant to question to what extend these metrics provide information on the effective visual quality of the reconstructed hologram. Given that today no holographic display technology is available that would allow for a proper subjective evaluation experiment, we propose in this paper a methodology that is based on assessing the quality of a reconstructed compressed hologram on a regular 2D display. In parallel, we also evaluate several coding engines, namely JPEG configured with the default perceptual quantization tables and with uniform quantization tables, JPEG 2000, JPEG 2000 extended with arbitrary packet decompositions and direction-adaptive filters and H.265/HEVC configured in intra-frame mode. The experimental results indicate that the perceived visual quality and the objective measures are well correlated. Moreover, also the superiority of the HEVC and the extended JPEG 2000 coding engines was confirmed, particularly at lower bitrates.

Analytical equations describing lobster eye optical parameters on dependence on its geometric parameters are presented. The paper partially gives review of main previously known results. At next, the paper gives new results discussing parameters, that were not included to previously published models but may be significant. The results are applicable for a Schmidt as well as for an Angel lobster eye and for some related multi-foil systems.

In this paper we analyze some problems related to the acquisition of multiple illumination images for Polynomial Texture Maps (PTM) or generic Reflectance Transform Imaging (RTI). We show that intensity and directionality nonuniformity can be a relevant issue when acquiring manual sets of images with the standard highlight-based setup both using a flash lamp and a LED light. To maintain a cheap and flexible acquisition setup that can be used on field and by non-experienced users we propose to use a dynamic calibration and correction of the lights based on multiple intensity and direction estimation around the imaged object during the acquisition. Preliminary tests on the results obtained have been performed by acquiring a specifically designed 3D printed pattern in order to see the accuracy of the acquisition obtained both for spatial discrimination of small structures and normal estimation, and on samples of different types of paper in order to evaluate material discrimination. We plan to design and build from our analysis and from the tools developed and under development a set of novel procedures and guidelines that can be used to turn the cheap and common RTI acquisition setup from a simple way to enrich object visualization into a powerful method for extracting quantitative characterization both of surface geometry and of reflective properties of different materials. These results could have relevant applications in the Cultural Heritage domain, in order to recognize different materials used in paintings or investigate the ageing status of artifacts’ surface.

Marine Spatial Planning (MSP), which is in concept similar to land-use planning, is a public process by which the relevant Member State’s authorities analyse and organise human activities in marine areas to achieve ecological, economic and social objectives. MSP aims to promote sustainable growth of maritime economies, sustainable development of marine areas and sustainable use of marine resources. This paper highlights the importance of MSP and provides basic outcomes of the main European marine development. The already successful MSP plans can provide useful feedback and guidelines for other countries that are in the process of implementation of an integrated MSP, such as Cyprus. This paper presents part of the MSP project, of which 80% funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 20% from national contribution. An overview of the project is presented, including data acquisition, methodology and preliminary results for the implementation of MSP in Cyprus.

The LAMP (Lightweight Asymmetry and Magnetism Probe) X-ray telescope is a mission concept to measure the polarization of X-ray astronomical sources at 250 eV via imaging mirrors that reflect at incidence angles near the polarization angle, i.e., 45 deg. Hence, it will require the adoption of multilayer coatings with a few nanometers d-spacing in order to enhance the reflectivity. The nickel electroforming technology has already been successfully used to fabricate the high angular resolution imaging mirrors of the X-ray telescopes SAX, XMM-Newton, and Swift/XRT. We are investigating this consolidated technology as a possible technique to manufacture focusing mirrors for LAMP. Although the very good reflectivity performances of this kind of mirrors were already demonstrated in grazing incidence, the reflectivity and the scattering properties have not been tested directly at the unusually large angle of 45 deg. Other possible substrates are represented by thin glass foils or silicon wafers. In this paper we present the results of the X-ray reflectivity campaign performed at the BEAR beamline of Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste on multilayer coatings of various composition (Cr/C, Co/C), deposited with different sputtering parameters on nickel, silicon, and glass substrates, using polarized X-rays in the spectral range 240 - 290 eV., Preprint version: the fully published paper can be downloaded at http://dx.doi.org/10.1117/12.2185432

The present paper describes the challenging diffuser design and verification activities of TNO under contract of a customer for an earth observation instrument with observation conditions that require feasible BRDF under large angles of incidence of up to 70° with respect to the surface normal. Not only the design though but also the verification of the diffuser performance under such angles including out-of-plane , i.e. angle theta detection of the scattered light, was an essential activity to be executed. In this paper we will summarize the R&D activities with respect to diffuser design and verification that were recently carried out at TNO and present its applicability to current and future earth observation missions with challenging observation conditions and thus challenging diffuser requirements under high illumination angles.

The segmentation of the primary mirror is the only promising solution for building the next generation of ground telescopes. However, manufacturing segmented mirrors presents its own challenges. The edge mis-figure impacts directly on the telescope’s scientific output. The ‘Edge effect’ significantly dominates the polishing precision. Therefore, the edge control is regarded as one of the most difficult technical issues in the segment production that needs to be addressed urgently. This paper reports an active edge control technique for the mirror segments fabrication using the Precession's polishing technique. The strategy in this technique requires that the large spot be selected on the bulk area for fast polishing, and the small spot is used for edge figuring. This can be performed by tool lift and optimizing the dell time to compensate for non-uniform material removal at the edge zone. This requires accurate and stable edge tool influence functions. To obtain the full tool influence function at the edge, we have demonstrated in previous work a novel hybrid-measurement method which uses both simultaneous phase interferometry and profilometry. In this paper, the edge effect under ‘Bonnet tool’ polishing is investigated. The pressure distribution is analyzed by means of finite element analysis (FEA). According to the ‘Preston’ equation, the shape of the edge tool influence functions is predicted. With this help, the multiple process parameters at the edge zone are optimized. This is demonstrated on a 200mm cross-corners hexagonal part with a result of PV less than 200nm for entire surface.

Light pipes are key optical components used in projection systems to transport and homogenize light from the source towards the light valve. They can provide a uniform light distribution at their output as a result of multiple internal reflections. In laser projection systems, such light pipes are useful in combination with a laser-light module consisting of one or more single-mode lasers and a rotating diffuser. The partially coherent light emanating from the rotating diffuser is transported and homogenized towards the end of the light pipe. Consequently, propagation through the light pipe will also modify the coherence properties of the laser light. In this paper, a computationally efficient simulation model is presented to propagate partially coherent light through a homogenizing rectangular light pipe. The resulting coherence function clearly differs from that of free-space propagation over the same optical path length. The implications of these results on, for example, the appearance of speckle are discussed in further detail. The simulation results are experimentally verified using a reversing wavefront Michelson interferometer. This paper describes the Electrical Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) of the Dust characterization, Risk assessment, and Environment Analyser on the Martian Surface (DREAMS) scientific instrument, an autonomous surface payload package to be accommodated on the Entry, Descendent and landing Module (EDM) of the ExoMars 2016 European Space Agency (ESA) mission. DREAMS will perform several kinds of measurements, such as the solar irradiance with different optical detectors in the UVA band (315-400nm), NIR band (700-1100nm) and in "total luminosity" (200 –1100 nm). It will also measure environmental parameters such as the intensity of the electric field, temperature, pressure, humidity, speed and direction of the wind. The EGSE is built to control the instrument and manage the data acquisition before the integration of DREAMS within the Entry, Descendent and landing Module (EDM) and then to retrieve data from the EDM Central Checkout System (CCS), after the integration. Finally it will support also the data management during mission operations. The EGSE is based on commercial off-the-shelf components and runs custom software. It provides power supply and simulates the spacecraft, allowing the exchange of commands and telemetry according to the protocol defined by the spacecraft prime contractor. This paper describes the architecture of the system, as well as its functionalities to test the DREAMS instrument during all development activities before the ExoMars 2016 launch.
