Developing mathematics proficiency requires an understanding of mathematics vocabulary. Although previous research has developed several measures of mathematics vocabulary at different grade levels, no study focused solely on fraction vocabularies. We developed and tested a measure of fraction vocabulary for students in Grade 4 to determine the internal consistency and difficulty level of such a measure. Analysis indicated the measure demonstrated high internal consistency. Students, on average, answered less than one-third of fraction vocabularies correctly. Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is a common cancer characterized by a high molecular heterogeneity. Therefore, understanding its biological properties and developing effective treatments for patients with different molecular features is imperative. Calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) has been implicated in several regulatory functions in various types of human cancers. However, its underlying pathological mechanism in BC progression remains elusive. Methods: We utilized The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus databases to explore the function of CaSR in the metastasis of BC. Gene ontology analysis, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes analysis, and Gene Set Enrichment Analysis of biological processes and cell signaling pathways revealed that CaSR could be activated or inhibited. Importantly, quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and western blotting were used to verify the gene expression of the CaSR. Wound healing and transwell assays were conducted to assess the effect of CaSR on the migration of BC cells. Results: We demonstrated that CaSR expression in metastatic BC was higher than that in non-metastatic BC. It is the first time that database information has been used to reveal the biological process and molecular mechanism of CaSR in BC. Moreover, the CaSR expression in normal breast epithelial cells was notably less compared to that in BC cells. The activation of CaSR by Cinacalcet (a CaSR agonist) significantly enhanced the migration of BC cells, whereas NPS-2143 (a CaSR antagonist) treatment dramatically inhibited these effects. Conclusion and future perspective: Bioinformatics techniques and experiments demonstrated the involvement of CaSR in BC metastasis. There have been mixed findings on whether social media use is positively or negatively related to well-being. Using the Midlife in the United States Refresher study (N = 782, age 25–75), multilevel structural equation modeling examined social support quantity (time giving and receiving) and quality of as mediators at both the within- (intraindividual) and between-person (interindividual) levels. Giving support significantly mediated at within- and between-person levels: more social media use was associated with more time giving support and worse well-being. Receiving support significantly mediated at the between-person level: more social media use was associated with more time receiving support and worse well-being. When examining social support quality as a mediator, findings showed that more social media use to contact family/friends was related to better social support quality and better well-being. Background: Ferroptosis is a novel type of regulated cell death and targeting ferroptosis may be a potential treatment strategy for lung cancer. Ziyuglycoside II (ZYG II) has a significant inhibitory effect on the growth of lung cancer cells. However, the selective anti-tumor effect of the ZYG II against lung cancer has not been systemically studied. Objectives: We combined ferrostatin-1 and erastin to explore the potential therapeutic mechanism of the ZYG II for lung adenocarcinoma. Materials and Methods: A549 and H1299 cells were randomly divided into the control, ZYG II, ferroptosis inhibitor group (ZYG II+ ferrostatin-1), and erastin group (ZYG II+ erastin). Cell proliferation was detected using the CCK-8 method. Cell migration and invasion were evaluated using the Transwell assay. The protein expression levels of Glutathione Peroxidase 4 (GPX4), Solute Carrier Family 7 Member 11 (SLC7A11), and Transferrin receptor 1 (TFR1) were measured using western blotting. Results: Compared with the control group, the cell proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of the ZYG II group significantly decreased, the protein expression levels of GPX4 and SLC7A11 in the ZYG II group declined significantly, and the expression of TFR1 increased significantly (p < 0.05). After adding ferrostatin 1 (ZYG II+ Ferrostatin 1), the cell proliferation, migration, and invasion abilities of the inhibited cells were significantly increased, the expression of GPX4 and SLC7A11 increased significantly and the expression of TFR1 decreased significantly (p < 0.05). However, after adding the erastin (ZYG II+ erastin), the cell viability was further inhibited in A549, the expression levels of GPX4 and SLC7A11 were further inhibited and the expression of TFR1 was further increased (p < 0.05). Conclusion: ZYG II significantly inhibited the survival rate, proliferation, migration, and invasion ability of A549 and H1299 cells, possibly by inducing ferroptosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This quasi‐experimental study was designed to investigate the initial efficacy of a fraction‐vocabulary intervention for Grade 4 students with mathematics difficulty (MD) and to explore its impact on relevant fraction competencies. Thirty‐three students were assigned to either the intervention condition (n = 16) or a business‐as‐usual comparison condition (n = 17). The intervention occurred 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks, for a total of 11 sessions. Results indicated the main effect of the fraction‐vocabulary intervention was significant for fraction‐vocabulary posttest and one fraction competency—fraction arithmetic. That is, students with MD can successfully learn fraction vocabulary via a brief intervention, and improved fraction‐vocabulary knowledge may positively affect their fraction competencies. The life history approach, a common interviewing method within the social sciences, involves collecting longitudinal data retrospectively by seeking an individual's account of their life over different periods of time. The exploratory, in-depth and narrative nature of life history interviews make it a compelling narrative method that can illicit rich and in-depth data and understanding (of the "other" and self). At the same time, this attribute raises various ethical complexities that must be considered. This paper documents the personal and professional reflections of a research team conducting life history interviews for a specific research project. Objective: Acteoside (ACT) has been reported to regulate the inflammation and immune response. The study aims to explore the effect of ACT on renal fibrosis in unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) rats. Methods: Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: sham group, opened the abdominal cavity and sutured abdominal; UUO group, performed UUO surgery; and ACT + UUO group, ACT (40 mg/kg) was given by gavage every day after UUO surgery. After 2 weeks of rat model construction, urine and blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis, while kidney tissues were harvested for hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), Masson's trichrome, and immunohistochemistry staining. The expression of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF), alpha smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), collagen III, heat shock protein 47 (HSP47), and β-catenin in the renal tissue was detected and the correlation between these proteins was analyzed. Results: ACT improved the parameters of renal function in UUO rats, including decreased creatinine and urea nitrogen, and declined urinary protein. Pathological analysis suggested that ACT improved the conditions of renal tubule lesion (including structure destruction, atrophy and lumen obstruction), renal interstitial fibrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration in UUO rats. It also down-regulated the expressions of fibrin-related proteins β-catenin, CTGF, α-SMA, collagen III, and HSP47. Correlation analysis found that β-catenin and CTGF were correlated with the expressions of α-SMA, collagen III, and HSP47. Objective: Immune inflammatory cells and cytokines play an important role in the occurrence and development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Acteoside has been reported to regulate the inflammation and immune response. The study aims to investigate the effects of acteoside on the expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β1 on nephropathy in diabetic mice. Methods: C57BL/6J mice in the model group were given a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ (150 mg/kg). Model mice were divided randomly into two groups: 5 without treatment, 5 treated with acteoside. After continuous administration for 8 weeks, serum, urine, and kidney tissue were collected, then, ralated biochemical parameters, pathological characteristics and MCP-1 and TGF-β1 mRNA or protein were detected. The NRK-52E cells were divided into three groups as follows: the normal control group (NC group), the high glucose group (HS group), the high glucose+acteoside group (HS+ACT group). The expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β1 in the mRNA and protein levels were assessed with RT-PCR, western blot and ELISA. Results: The expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β1 were significantly enhanced in DN group and dramatically reduced after acteoside treatment. Compared with those in NC group, the expressions of MCP-1 and TGF-β1 in NRK-52E cell of HS group were significantly enhanced, while both were significantly decreased in HS+ACT group compared with HS group. In the present meta-analysis, we systematically investigated the relative contributions of students' initial mathematics, reading, and cognitive skills on subsequent mathematics performance measured at least 3 months later. With one-stage meta-analytic structural equation modeling, we conducted analyses based on 580,437 students from 265 independent samples and 250 studies. Findings suggested fluency in both mathematics and reading, as well as working memory, yielded greater impacts on subsequent mathematics performance. Age emerged as a significant moderator in the model, such that the effects of comprehensive mathematics and working memory on subsequent mathematics increased with age, whereas attention and self-regulation's impacts declined with age. Time lag between assessments also emerged as a significant moderator, such that the effects of word-problem solving and word recognition accuracy decreased as the time lag increased, whereas vocabulary, attention, and self-regulation's effects increased as the time lag increased. Background: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have succeeded in identifying over 200 susceptibility loci for multiple sclerosis (MS). However, the potential functional variants and the mechanisms by which these loci affect MS risk remain largely unexplained. Objectives: We used summary data-based Mendelian randomisation to prioritise risk genes and infer potential biological mechanisms for MS risk loci. Methods: The data used consisted of DNA methylation (n = 1980) QTL (mQTL) and gene expression (n = 31,684) QTL (eQTL) derived from whole blood as well as MS GWAS summary statistics (14,802 cases, 26,703 controls). The findings were further evaluated using data derived from independent brain mQTL (n = 1160) and eQTL (n = 1194). Results: In whole blood, we identified two independent genomic loci (lincRNA: RP11-326C3.13 and TNFSF14) with consistent genome-wide significant pleiotropic associations across different omics layers. In brain tissue, a similar effect for the RP11-326C3.13 locus was observed but not for TNFSF14, indicating a potential tissue-specific effect for the TNFSF14 locus. Conclusion: We provide in silico evidence for the putative biological mechanisms by which the identified DNA methylation sites and target genes are functionally relevant to MS development in different tissues. Background: Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-positive chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in the immune-tolerant (IT) phase is significantly associated with high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma, suggesting requirement for antiviral therapy, particularly for those with histological liver injury. This study aimed to establish a non-invasive panel to assess significant liver fibrosis in IT chronic hepatitis B. Patients and methods: One hundred and thirteen IT-phase CHB patients were retrospectively recruited and divided into two histopathological groups according to their histological profiles: necroinflammatory score <4 (N <4)/fibrosis score ⩽1 (F0-1), and necroinflammatory score ⩾4 (N ⩾4)/fibrosis score ⩾2 (F2-4). Multivariate analysis was conducted to assess the predictive value of the non-invasive model for significant liver fibrosis. Results: IT-phase CHB patients with N <4/F0-1 had significantly higher HBsAg levels than those with N ⩾4/F2-4. The optimal HBsAg level of log 4.44 IU/mL for significant liver fibrosis (F ⩾2) gave an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83, sensitivity of 81.1%, specificity of 81.6%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 68.2%, and negative predictive value (NPV) of 89.9%. An IT model with HBsAg and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) in combination was established, and it had an AUC of 0.86, sensitivity of 86.5%, specificity of 81.6%, PPV of 69.6, NPV of 92.5, and accuracy of 83.2% to predict F ⩾2 in the IT-phase CHB patients. Notably, the IT model exhibited higher predictive value than the existing aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index, Fibrosis-4 score, and GGT to platelet ratio. The purpose of the study was to compare the deficit profiles of two important types of mathematics difficulties. Three cognitive measures (working memory, processing speed, and reasoning), two mathematics measures (numerical facts retrieval and mathematics vocabulary), and reading comprehension were assessed among 237 Chinese fourth-grade students, among whom 28 were classified as students with only computational difficulties (CD), 34 were classified as having only word problem-solving difficulties (WPD), 20 were classified as students with computational and word problem-solving difficulties (CD + WPD), and 43 typically developing (TD) peers. Multivariate analysis showed that, compared with TD, CD was associated with weakness in numerical working memory; WPD was associated with weakness in reading comprehension; both CD and WPD were associated with weakness in mathematics vocabulary. However, CD and WPD did not differ from each other on any of those profiling measures. Background: Drugs that promote angiogenesis include statins, recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and stromal cell-derived factor-1. Low doses of atorvastatin could significantly increase the vascular expressions of endothelial growth factor, and the number of peripheral blood endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), thus improving angiogenesis and local blood flow. G-CSF is an EPC-mobilization agent used in ischemia studies for targeting angiogenesis after cerebral ischemia via EPCs. In previous clinical trials, consistent conclusions have not been reached about the effectiveness of G-CSF on ischemic stroke. Therefore, the therapeutic effect of G-CSF and its combination with other medicines need further experimental verification. It is known that atorvastatin, rhG-CSF, and SDF-1 are considered the most promising neuroprotective candidates, but a comprehensive comparison of their effects is lacking. Aims: To compare the effects of atorvastatin, stromal cell-derived factor-1, and recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor on ischemic stroke. Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to three groups: normal, sham-operated, and middle cerebral artery occlusion operated. Middle cerebral artery occlusion operated rats were further allocated into saline, atorvastatin, recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, and recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor + stromal cell-derived factor-1 groups. Neurological function evaluation, cerebral infarction and the blood–brain barrier integrity analysis, identification of angiogenic factors, assessment of angiogenesis, expression of growth-associated protein-43, neuroglobin, glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor, and cleaved caspase 3, were performed. Results: Compared with atorvastatin or recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor alone, recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor + stromal cell-derived factor-1 treatment improved neurological performance, reduced cerebral infarction and blood–brain barrier disruption after stroke, and increased the content of stromal cell-derived factor-1, vascular endothelial growth factor, monocyte chemotactic protein 1, and basic fibroblast growth factor in peripheral blood. In addition, recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor + stromal cell-derived factor-1 promoted greater angiogenesis than atorvastatin or recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor alone and increased the expression of growth-associated protein-43, neuroglobin, and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor, while decreasing the levels of cleaved caspase 3 in the brain after ischemic stroke. Conclusions: Combination therapy with recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and stromal cell-derived factor-1 is more effective than atorvastatin or recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor alone in protecting against stroke-induced damage and could be an optimal therapeutic strategy for stroke. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine the relation between mathematics anxiety (MA) and mathematics performance among school-aged students, and to identify potential moderators and underlying mechanisms of such relation, including grade level, temporal relations, difficulty of mathematical tasks, dimensions of MA measures, effects on student grades, and working memory. A meta-analysis of 131 studies with 478 effect sizes was conducted. The results indicated that a significant negative correlation exist between MA and mathematics performance, r = −.34. Moderation analyses indicated that dimensions of MA, difficulty of mathematical tasks, and effects on student grades differentially affected the relation between MA and mathematics performance. MA assessed with both cognitive and affective dimensions showed a stronger negative correlation with mathematics performance compared to MA assessed with either an affective dimension only or mixed/unspecified dimensions. Advanced mathematical tasks that require multistep processes showed a stronger negative correlation to MA compared to foundational mathematical tasks. Mathematics measures that affected/reflected student grades (e.g., final exam, students' course grade, GPA) had a stronger negative correlation to MA than did other measures of mathematics performance that did not affect student grades (e.g., mathematics measures administered as part of research). Background: Acetabular labral reconstruction with autologous tendons is the preferred method for treating a severely damaged labrum. However, the healing process of implants remains unknown. Similar to the human acetabular labrum, the porcine acetabular labrum is a fibrocartilage-like tissue. Purpose: This study aimed to characterize the histological healing process and gene expression profile of implants in a porcine model of acetabular labral reconstruction. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: Eighteen pigs were included in this study. The pigs underwent unilateral acetabular labral reconstruction. A 1.0 cm–long defect was made at the site of the anterior (cranial) dorsal labrum, which was repaired using an autologous mesogluteus tendon. The pigs were sacrificed at 12 and 24 weeks postoperatively. The implants were subjected to histological assessment and gene expression analysis. The cell phenotype of the implants was visualized using paraffin-embedded sections. Results: Macroscopic observations revealed that at 12 weeks, 8 of 9 implants partially filled the labral defect; by contrast, at 24 weeks, 6 of 9 implants fully filled and 3 implants partially filled the labral defects. Oval- or round-shaped fibrochondrocytes were found in the implants at 12 and 24 weeks. The matrix staining results showed that proteoglycan and collagen types 1 and 2 were more evident in the implants at 24 weeks than at 12 weeks. Gene expression analysis results revealed that COL2A1 and COL3A1 were expressed by the implants to a higher extent at 24 weeks than at 12 weeks; COL2A1 and COL3A1 were also expressed to a higher extent in the implants than in the native tendon. Conclusion: On the basis of the results of histological assessment and gene expression analysis, autologous tendon tissue for acetabular labral reconstruction can fully or partially fill labral defects and converts to fibrocartilage, which is rich in proteoglycan and collagen types 1 and 2, at 24 weeks in a porcine model. Background: Calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (CG) is a natural isoflavone found in traditional Chinese medicines Astragali Radix (AR). Objective: Calycosin-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, an isoflavone isolated from AR, has been found to have potent antioxidantive effects. This study was designed to investigate whether CG prevents oxidative stress induced by thioacetamide (TAA). Materials and Methods: BRL-3A cells were pretreated with different concentrations of CG (10, 20, 40 mg/mL) for 12 h and then exposed to 0.18 mol/L TAA for 2 h. The cell viability were examined by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl-tetrazolium assay, total antioxidant capacity, malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, including catalase, glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were determined by microplate method. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was quantified by the 2',7'-dichlorofluorescin-diacetate method. Protein and mRNA expression of CYP2E1 were determined by western blotting and real-time PCR. Results: The cell oxidative stress was significantly increased after 2 h of TAA exposure. Pretreatment of BRL-3A cells with CG significantly increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes, scavenged ROS and reduced MDA production. CG decreased the expression of CYP2E1, and ultimately decreased TAA-induced BRL-3A cells oxidative stress. Conclusions: Calycosin-7-O-β- D-glucopyranoside has a protective effect against TAA-induced oxidative stress in BRL-3A cells, and that the underlying mechanism involves in scavenging of ROS and the modulating expression of CYP2E1. Two new complexes, [Cd(L)2(bipy)0.5(H2O)] and [Zn(L)2(bipy)] (HL=3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid and bipy=4,4'-bipyridine) have been synthesised and structurally characterised by single-crystal diffraction analysis. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a cancer-related tumor marker, which is commonly used for preventive screening, auxiliary diagnosis, and recurrence monitoring. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a new CEA detection method. In this paper, we developed an SERS aptasensor for CEA based on silver nanorod array chip, thiol aptamer, and 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA). The silver nanorod array chip modified by CEA thiol aptamer (aptamer-SH) was used as SERS capture substrates. Ag@4-MPBA was used as a surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) tag. This proposed SERS aptasensor could detect CEA down to 0.447 pg·mL−1 with a wide linear range from 1 pg·mL−1 to 100 ng·mL−1 (R2 = 0.9907). The recovery of the standard addition test for CEA in serum was between 97.25% and 102.67%, and the RSD ≤ 2.52% (n = 3). The sensor has the advantages of good specificity, high sensitivity, and a wide linear range. It provides a new method for the detection of CEA in serum. Graphical Abstract [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
