The papers compiled in the present volume reflect the key theme of the most recent Duo Colloquium sessions – contextuality. The psychological notion of context has been central to translation research for decades, and it has evolved along with the development of translational thought, translation types and tools. The theme of contextuality can be understood at any level, from the geopolitical to the textual, and embraced by both academic and professional considerations of translational and interpreting phenomena. It is centred on context, contexts and/or decontextualisation in translation and interpreting theory and practice from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. Discussing the above-mentioned notions is the subject of the present volume.

Translation is rooted in diversity and its nature necessarily resides in accommodating differences of all sorts: lexical, textual, macrotextual, intertextual, individual, social, cultural, political, et cetera. This collection of papers, which deals with literature, poetry, hospital situations, minority languages, proverbs and so on, gives a good picture of how differences are accommodated in translation across languages but also across cultures. They form a good starting point for comparison between translation practices and translation approaches. They reveal how Indian and Western scholars perceive translation.

This book intends to present the challenges and new perspectives in the field oftranslation studies in parallel with the improvements in the academic and scientificworld with a specific focus on the themes of translation studies, ecocriticism,subtitling, retranslation, feminist and queer translation, descriptive translationstudies, text mining, multimodality in translation, and legal translation. Whilepresenting such wide-ranging research and analyses from various points of view ofoutstanding scholars in Turkey, our greatest wish is to build a common ground onwhich to build discussions in order to contribute to the ongoing studies in the field.

Biomedical translation is a complex activity that goes far beyond finding equivalent terms in another language. Communication and safety problems may occur in scenarios such as the following: (i) if translators are unaware of the conceptual, lexical, and pragmatic complexities of medical translation; (ii) if they do not possess advanced translation competence; or (iii) if they are not familiar with standards and workflows of the sector, or with documentation techniques. They should also be aware of the terminological and technological tools commonly used in the healthcare industry. This book provides viable solutions for English-Spanish medical translators who face such problems. It also integrates widely accepted theoretical paradigms and presents the most up-to-date resources and tools.

Modern Approaches to Translation and Translation Studies serves as a collection of research describing the development of the discipline and its journey that has not been completed. The book deals with the latest developments within Translation Studies from the perspective of Turkish translation scholars. It consists of thirteen chapters with the participation of fourteen different authors working at universities in Turkey as academicians or having pursued or still pursuing their PhD within Translation Studies. With written translations of significant works of culture, it has often been the powerholders who supported and promoted or impeded them, depending on their own preferences or their understanding of the actual sociopolitical needs. The powerholders in question are individual or collective decision-makers at various levels of the sociopolitical hierarchy who determine policies and allocate funds for approved projects. This book explores the covert and overt creative potential　of misunderstanding. Viewed from the authors'perspective, misunderstanding proves an elementary and unavoidable aspect of linguistic and cultural communication that can have a surprisingly beneficial impact on social relations and concomitantly stimulate the emergence of new cultural forms. As the authors of the book prove, cross-cultural contact is definitely a dynamic and asymmetric process rather than a static and symmetric transfer of values from one culture to another.

The objective of this book is to continue the reflection on the innovative potential of misunderstanding in　cross-cultural encounters　which we started by publishing the first part of the book (Understanding Misunderstanding. Vol. 1: Cross-Cultural Translation, Peter Lang 2019). The main purpose of these two corresponding volumes is to embrace not only the cross-cultural adaptation of texts, ideas and discourses in distant geo-historical contexts, but also the culturally-based mechanisms of creatively transforming and re-shaping the source-text in target environments. The notions of misunderstanding and semantic transformation are seen as crucial in this process, yet still not widely acknowledged.

The book focuses on the phenomenon of archaization in literary translation. It analyzes the concept of archaism, pointing to its strongly evaluative aspect and highlighting the difficulties connected with supplying its clear and acceptable definition. Archaism and archaization are strongly rooted in nostalgia, understood as the human yearning for stability and harmony. Far from being an idle embellishment or an empty postmodernist game, archaization emerges as a vehicle for powerful emotions embedded in dominant discourses fostered by educated European elites. Archaism, like nostalgia, eclectically and arbitrarily recreates the past, in accordance with dominant political and cultural agendas. Both phenomena idealize the past, forcibly purifying it from all unwanted elements.

This book explores a range of topics situated in the overlapping areas of theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics and translation studies. The first part of the book comprises five original contributions on topics ranging from general linguistics to applied linguistics while the second part comprises eleven original contributions exploring selected aspects of theoretical, descriptive and applied translation studies. Court interpreting understood as services provided for court stakeholders and court's private clients is a subdiscipline which has emerged as an area of investigation within Interpreting Studies. Although the research in court interpreting has been enjoying prominence at an international level, there are still aspects of the profession which need further analysis. This book is aimed at presenting qualitative research into court interpreting in Poland, and in particular, where the Polish-English and (to a lesser extent) Polish-Spanish language pairs are involved. The study pertains to the descriptive research into court interpreting where the interpreter is perceived as an active participant in the interaction obliged to satisfy the principles of professional ethics.

This book provides a comprehensive view of intercultural specifics resulting from the translation and reception process of precedent phenomena (precedent names, texts, statements, situations) in different linguistic and socio-cultural spaces – Russian, Slovak and German. The author analyses language and translation itself as a phenomenon of culture in form of interdisciplinary research and thus links translation studies with philosophy, literary science, culture, and intercultural psychology. His comparative research provides a detailed analysis of precedent phenomena in the work Moscow to the End of the Line by V. Erofeev (Russian-Slovak-German comparative aspect). His conclusions and commentaries enrich the sphere of translation and reception of intercultural units.

The academic discipline of translation studies is only half a century old and even younger in the field of bilateral translation between Japanese and Turkish. This book is the second volume of the world's first academic book on Turkish↔Japanese translation. While this volume gathered discussions on translation studies with theoric and applied aspects, literature, linguistics, and philosophy, the second volume deals with the history of translation, philosophy, culture education, language education, and law. It also covers the translation of historical materials and divan poetry. These books will be the first steps to discuss and develop various aspects of the field. Such compilation brings together experienced and young Turkology and Japanology scholars as well as academics linked to translation studies and translation, and also translators. Both volumes contain 24 essays written by twenty-two writers from Japan, Turkey, USA and China.

The aim of this monograph is to present the traces of intercultural encounters between Poland and Latin America realized by means of literary translations produced in the post-war period. It considers various aspects of the reception of Polish translations of Spanish American prose in 1945-2005 by examining their presence on the book market in the communist times and after 1990 in free market conditions. The analyses of critical texts show the attitudes of Polish critics towards this prose over the years. Survey research presents motives, behaviours and needs developed in different epochs by Polish readers. The interdisciplinary character of the monograph involves methodology inspired by translation, reception and cultural studies, sociology of literature and intercultural semantics.

This book addresses epistemological and political aspects of the discursive pursuit of authenticity and various ways in which the inauthentic is devalued and marginalized. The essays critically analyze various means by which the authentic is searched for, staged, admired, dismissed, replicated or simply taken for granted. What is at work in such discursive practices is a poetics of imitation. This is seen as a paradoxical kind of poetics which renounces the authenticity of the created text for the sake of its semi-religious offering to the origin. Such a divination of the Authentic posits translation as an idolatrous act accompanied by a suspicion of its simultaneously being iconoclastic.

This book offers an interdisciplinary rethinking of the role of translation in the perception and reception of cultural texts. It also discusses human everyday discursive practices at the time of fluctuation of meanings and the decline of the authentic. Almost everything that one claims about meaning is likely to be questioned or disputed. Translation studies also abound in numerous controversies. However, there is no doubt that translations entail a transfer of meaning, even if the exact sense of the word'meaning'remains vague. The same applies to the term'translation equivalence'. This book is an attempt to cope with conceptual, terminological, theoretical, and practical difficulties resulting from this nebula of issues. Numerous examples of translated legal, religious and artistic texts are provided to substantiate the claim that translation equivalence, except in the most trivial sense of the term, is indeed a delusion. The book is addressed to all those persons who are interested in mutual relations between semantics and translation studies.

Studies collected in this volume investigate selected issues in contemporary philosophy of language and philosophy of literature. Individual authors concentrate on philosophy of fiction and discuss fictional worlds and fictional characters. They also present different approaches to translation theory, and metaphor theory (both classical and conceptual). Other chapters address the issues of figurativeness and poetic language, apply the principles of cognitive poetics to analyse different types of texts, and provide cognitive approaches to abstraction in visual and verbal art, also to the categories of similarity and difference in perception and language. Corpus-based translation studies have come a long way since they were introduced in the last decade of the 20th century. This volume offers a balanced collection of theoretical and application-orientated contributions which establish novel trends in the area of corpus-based translation and interpreting studies. Most of the theoretical contributions report on studies related to translation universals such as simplification, explicitation, normalisation, convergence or transfer. The application-orientated contributions cover areas as diverse as corpus-based applied research, training, practice and the use of computer-assisted translation tools.

En esta obra se propone al lector un viaje de ida y vuelta de la Lingüística a la Traductología en la comprensión de los fenómenos de variación. La argumentación de la primera parte se basa en las siguientes cuestiones: ¿qué es la variación? y ¿por qué el traductor necesita al variacionista? La segunda parte pretende responder a las cuestiones siguientes: ¿qué importancia tiene la variación para el traductor? y ¿en qué sentido son distintas la percepción que el lingüista y el traductor o traductólogo tienen de la variación? En la tercera parte, por último, se realiza un análisis de casos prácticos de traducción de la variación en distintos ámbitos de actuación (biosanitario, literario, humanístico, audiovisual y jurídico) que concluye con una propuesta de conceptualización traductológica.

This book is the first monographic study on forms of address in Polish-English subtitling from a multidisciplinary perspective. It departs from a contrastive analysis of forms of address in Polish and in English, then discusses the methodological tools and, finally, presents the empirical study on the translation of Polish forms of address in English TV subtitles. The study corpus contains nearly 100,000 words from three popular Polish soap operas and their English translations. Drawing on the methodological tools from descriptive translation studies, audiovisual translation and corpus-based research, the author presents a comprehensive survey of the translation techniques used by the subtitlers in rendering forms of address and discusses their implications. The book can be used by translation teachers, students and professionals.

The need for reliable and valid assessments of translator and interpreter skills has been widely acknowledged inside and outside these professions and the (language) testing community. Despite this agreement, the actual assessments which serve as gatekeepers for professional translators and interpreters do not always live up to the expectations. The focus of the volume is on the assessment of translator and interpreter skills leading to authorization, accreditation, registration and certification in different countries of the world. Apart from the description of the different assessment systems, the chapters shed light on the intricate social, political and financial issues influencing the choices that lead to a specific kind of assessment.

The book's principal argument is that the concepts of Cognitive Linguistics offer considerable explanatory potential which can be systematically used in accounts of translation, and especially of subtitling as its more specifically constrained audiovisual mode. Authentic English-to-Polish subtitling data are explored to uncover patterns of construal reconfiguration which can be categorised with the use of cognitive semantic constructs. The author also examines other hypotheses: spatio-temporal constraints, for example, do not always directly account for the reductionist alterations of the source text in subtitling. Also, target construals need not display lower granularity levels than original construals and granularity can de facto be boosted via subtitling. And last, but not least, the conventionalisation of language structures used in subtitles can be higher than that of the original expressions.

Since translation cannot be approached in isolation from meaning, anything that is said about translation must necessarily be placed in the context of meaning. Accordingly, the first volume of the book concerns this necessary context, while the second volume will view translation in terms of the semantic framework presented in the first volume. Both volumes are to a large extent consistent with major tenets of cognitive linguistics. The work is addressed primarily to students pursuing translation studies but also to all those persons who are interested in semantics and translation for whatever other reasons. The main aim of the book is to provide the prospective reader with a quantum of knowledge in the two areas. A subsidiary aim is to tidy up the metalinguistic terminology, replete with such deficiencies as polysemy, whereby one term is laden with a number of senses, as well as synonymy, due to which one sense is connected with more than one term.

Aus den zahlreichen für die Adäquatheit und die Richtigkeit der Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschleistungen relevanten Aspekten wurden zwei Teilbereiche ausgewählt: die Terminologie als feste Grundlage für die translatorische Äquivalenz und der Diskurs als prozessuale Basis für einen reibungslosen und erfolgreichen Dolmetschablauf. Die theoretischen Grundlagen und Methoden, auf welche für die Analysen zurückgegriffen wird, sind die der linguistischen und translatorischen Diskursanalyse. Sie versteht das Übersetzen und das Dolmetschen als ein zielgerichtetes Kommunikationsverfahren, welches mit diversen Formen der Sprachvermittlung eng verbunden ist. Die empirische Basis der Analyse berücksichtigt die wesentlichen Ansätze des Übersetzens und des Dolmetschens – von der Fachterminologie bis zu den kulturellen Aspekten des Translationsprozesses. This volume analyzes problems crucial to the science of practical translation. Among the many aspects which are important for the adequacy and correctness in translation and interpreting services, two areas were chosen – terminology as a firm base for translation equivalence and discourse as a procedural foundation for a successful translation process. The theoretical basis and methods which were used during the analysis are the ones which form the linguistic and translation discourse analysis. It presents translation and interpreting as a goal-oriented communication procedure, which is closely related to diverse forms of intercommunication. A characteristic feature of translation discourse analysis is that the object of the study is documented very closely with the terminology as a corpus of different specialized texts. Such an empirical base for the analysis takes into consideration the most significant approaches of translation and interpreting – from legal terminology to cultural aspects of the translation process.
