For decades, the focus of Metaphor Studies laid on Conceptual Metaphor and its role in the human conceptual system. This study, however, focuses on metaphor in communication. Its aim is to shed light on how commenters in online debates discuss EU-related topics via Scenario Negotiation, expressing and negotiating their points of view via Metaphorical Scenarios. The study offers a review of current metaphor theory and practical approaches and proposes an Integrated Model of Scenario Negotiation. The results are based on context-sensitive, qualitative analysis of data which stem from a corpus of online debates from the Guardian's Comment is free section. The discussion illustrates the genre-specific conceptual-communicative functions of Scenario Negotiation in naturally occurring discourse.

This volume contains a collection of papers which deal with Romance linguistics from the perspective of discourse and interaction. Some contributions cover areas such as spoken corpora, speech and linguistic description, and phonetic aspects of speech. Others focus on multimodality, pragmatics, and conversation and discourse, and there are also contributions which deal with speech and sociolinguistics, and speech in multilingualism/bilingualism. This volume is multilingual, containing as it does contributions written in English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

The volume brings together papers emerging from the GlobE conference (University of Warsaw). The authors explore major topics in Discourse Studies, offering insights into the field's theoretical foundations and discussing the results of its empirical applications. The book integrates different lines of research in Discourse Studies as undertaken at academic centres Europe-wide and beyond. In this diversity, the editors identify certain dominant lines of study, including (new) media discourse, political discourse in the age of social/digital media, or professional discourse in globalized workplace contexts. At the same time, the volume shows that Discourse Studies not only investigate emerging language phenomena, but also critically reassess research issues formerly addressed.

This collection of papers addresses new trends in Cognitive Linguistics. Three parts of the book focus on Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Integration Network Analysis. Both the theoretical contributions and the empirical case studies stress the importance of contextual factors in the meaning making processes. They employ qualitative methods to analyze the use of metaphor in political discourse and in the conceptualization of emotions. The data sets include multimodal data, sign languages and co-speech gestures. The fourth part of the book contains two corpus-based studies. The fifth part concentrates on the grammatical categories of passive voice and aspect. One contribution discusses the problem of categorization in phonology.

This book is a collection of chapters pertaining to some of the current problems of language description couched in terms of recent advances of the theory of Cognitive Linguistics. The analyses conducted by the authors revolve around issues belonging to the scope of, among others, discourse analysis, figurative language use, metaphorisation and metonymisation processes, as well as various approaches to grammatical constructions.

This monograph is a pioneering discourse-oriented study on gambling. Adopting the approach of critical discourse analysis (CDA), it analyzes how gamblers'identities are constructed through discourse by social institutions. The data consist of newspaper forum letters, gamblers'monologues released by a state gambling regulatory agency, and materials on problem/pathological gambling published by medical professionals. Incorporating a variety of analytical frameworks from prior researchers into the study, the author offers concrete linguistic evidence on the essential complementary ontological presence of institutional power holders and the «docile bodies» (Foucault, 1977) for societal functioning and the maintenance of social stability.

Taking metadiscourse as their starting point, the contributions to this edited volume focus both on the interactive and cross-cultural aspects of written texts from varying genres. Using rich and innovative data collection and analysis methods, comparing and contrasting patterns in frequently studied (English, Japanese) with understudied (Turkish, Russian/Ukrainian) languages, and relating empirical data to a web of theoretical frameworks, the articles in this book clearly display the variety, complexity and multiplicity of metadiscoursal analysis of written texts. The volume aims to substantially advance our understanding of the communicative nature of written texts and contributes to the advancement and expansion of researchers'interests in this field.

The study presents a chronotope of linguistic and cultural changes that took place in England and Wales between the 4th and 8th centuries. It encompasses the areas of South Wales and Eastern England and describes the cultural practices of preliterate Anglo-Saxon and Celtic speech communities and their adaptation of runic, ogham and Latin scripts. The study is based on the concepts of anthropological linguistics, ethnography of communication and discourse analysis. It incorporates 23 selected ogham- and Latin-inscribed stones from Wales, and 10 rune-inscribed everyday objects from England. The presented inscriptions were designed as text occurrences with well-planned, graphical content distribution, intentionally placed in the public space to increase the range of their potential audience.

Die Monografie umreißt die polonistische Textsortenforschung in ihren wichtigsten Strömungen und Entwicklungslinien. Teil I führt in den theoretischen Kontext ein und stellt das Begriffsinstrumentarium der Forschungsdisziplin vor. Es wird dabei eine integrative Herangehensweise an literarische und Gebrauchstexte gewählt. Teil II schlägt eine einheitliche methodologische Herangehensweise an Textsorten vor, die ihre Typologie (Netzmodell), Mehrebenenstruktur, Determinanten und Wechselbeziehungen, ihre Kulturbedingtheit sowie die gegenwärtige Tendenz zur Transgression und Hybridisierung umfasst. Abschließend wird beispielhaft die Textsortencharakteristik des literarischen Textes Jadac do Babadag von A. Stasiuk herausgearbeitet, der Textsorteninterferenzen innerhalb einzelner Äußerungen aufweist.

The book's principal argument is that the concepts of Cognitive Linguistics offer considerable explanatory potential which can be systematically used in accounts of translation, and especially of subtitling as its more specifically constrained audiovisual mode. Authentic English-to-Polish subtitling data are explored to uncover patterns of construal reconfiguration which can be categorised with the use of cognitive semantic constructs. The author also examines other hypotheses: spatio-temporal constraints, for example, do not always directly account for the reductionist alterations of the source text in subtitling. Also, target construals need not display lower granularity levels than original construals and granularity can de facto be boosted via subtitling. And last, but not least, the conventionalisation of language structures used in subtitles can be higher than that of the original expressions.

Dieser Sammelband analysiert die wesentlichen und prägnanten Punkte der praktischen Übersetzungslehre. Aus den zahlreichen für die Adäquatheit und die Richtigkeit der Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschleistungen relevanten Aspekten wurden zwei Teilbereiche ausgewählt: die Terminologie als feste Grundlage für die translatorische Äquivalenz und der Diskurs als prozessuale Basis für einen reibungslosen und erfolgreichen Dolmetschablauf. Die theoretischen Grundlagen und Methoden, auf welche für die Analysen zurückgegriffen wird, sind die der linguistischen und translatorischen Diskursanalyse. Sie versteht das Übersetzen und das Dolmetschen als ein zielgerichtetes Kommunikationsverfahren, welches mit diversen Formen der Sprachvermittlung eng verbunden ist. Die empirische Basis der Analyse berücksichtigt die wesentlichen Ansätze des Übersetzens und des Dolmetschens – von der Fachterminologie bis zu den kulturellen Aspekten des Translationsprozesses. This volume analyzes problems crucial to the science of practical translation. Among the many aspects which are important for the adequacy and correctness in translation and interpreting services, two areas were chosen – terminology as a firm base for translation equivalence and discourse as a procedural foundation for a successful translation process. The theoretical basis and methods which were used during the analysis are the ones which form the linguistic and translation discourse analysis. It presents translation and interpreting as a goal-oriented communication procedure, which is closely related to diverse forms of intercommunication. A characteristic feature of translation discourse analysis is that the object of the study is documented very closely with the terminology as a corpus of different specialized texts. Such an empirical base for the analysis takes into consideration the most significant approaches of translation and interpreting – from legal terminology to cultural aspects of the translation process.
