We introduce the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)/ Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) value-added catalogue of Galactic globular cluster (GC) stars. The catalogue is the result of a critical search of the APOGEE Data Release 17 (DR17) catalogue for candidate members of all known Galactic GCs. Candidate members are assigned to various GCs on the basis of position in the sky, proper motion, and radial velocity. The catalogue contains a total of 7737 entries for 6422 unique stars associated with 72 Galactic GCs. Full APOGEE DR17 information is provided, including radial velocities and abundances for up to 20 elements. Membership probabilities estimated on the basis of precision radial velocities are made available. Comparisons with chemical compositions derived from the GALactic Archaeology with HERMES (GALAH) survey, as well as optical values from the literature, show good agreement. This catalogue represents a significant increase in the public data base of GC star chemical compositions and kinematics, providing a massive homogeneous data set that will enable a variety of studies. It has been proposed that the globular cluster-like system Terzan 5 is the surviving remnant of a primordial building block of the Milky Way bulge, mainly due to the age/metallicity spread and the distribution of its stars in the α–Fe plane. We employ Sloan Digital Sky Survey data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment to test this hypothesis. Adopting a random sampling technique, we contrast the abundances of 10 elements in Terzan 5 stars with those of their bulge field counterparts with comparable atmospheric parameters, finding that they differ at statistically significant levels. Abundances between the two groups differ by more than 1σ in Ca, Mn, C, O, and Al, and more than 2σ in Si and Mg. Terzan 5 stars have lower [α/Fe] and higher [Mn/Fe] than their bulge counterparts. Given those differences, we conclude that Terzan 5 is not the remnant of a major building block of the bulge. We also estimate the stellar mass of the Terzan 5 progenitor based on predictions by the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments suite of cosmological numerical simulations, concluding that it may have been as low as ∼3 × 108 M⊙ so that it was likely unable to significantly influence the mean chemistry of the bulge/inner disc, which is significantly more massive (∼1010 M⊙). Numerous studies of integrated starlight, stellar counts, and kinematics have confirmed that the Milky Way is a barred galaxy. However, far fewer studies have investigated the bar's stellar population properties, which carry valuable independent information regarding the bar's formation history. Here, we conduct a detailed analysis of chemical abundance distributions ([Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe]) in the on-bar and off-bar regions to study the azimuthal variation of star formation history (SFH) in the inner Galaxy. We find that the on-bar and off-bar stars at Galactocentric radii 3 kpc < r GC < 5 kpc have remarkably consistent [Fe/H] and [Mg/Fe] distribution functions and [Mg/Fe]–[Fe/H] relation, suggesting a common SFH shared by the long bar and the disc. In contrast, the bar and disc at smaller radii (2 kpc < r GC < 3 kpc) show noticeable differences, with relatively more very metal-rich (⁠|$\rm [Fe/H] \sim 0.4$|⁠) stars but fewer solar abundance stars in the bar. Given the three-phase star formation history proposed for the inner Galaxy in Lian et al. these differences could be explained by the off-bar disc having experienced either a faster early quenching process or recent metal-poor gas accretion. Vertical variations of the abundance distributions at small r GC suggest a wider vertical distribution of low-α stars in the bar, which may serve as chemical evidence for vertical heating through the bar buckling process. We use data of ∼13 000 stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey/Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment survey to study the shape of the bulge metallicity distribution function (MDF) within the region |ℓ| ≤ 11° and | b | ≤ 13°, and spatially constrained to R GC ≤ 3.5 kpc. We apply Gaussian mixture modelling and non-negative matrix factorization decomposition techniques to identify the optimal number and the properties of MDF components. We find that the shape and spatial variations of the MDF (at [Fe/H] ≥ −1 dex) are well represented as a smoothly varying contribution of three overlapping components located at [Fe/H] = +0.32, −0.17, and −0.66 dex. The bimodal MDF found in previous studies is in agreement with our trimodal assessment once the limitations in sample size and individual measurement errors are taken into account. The shape of the MDF and its correlations with kinematics reveal different spatial distributions and kinematical structure for the three components co-existing in the bulge region. We confirm the consensus physical interpretation of metal-rich stars as associated with the secularly evolved disc into a boxy/peanut X-shape bar. On the other hand, metal-intermediate stars could be the product of in-situ formation at high redshift in a gas-rich environment characterized by violent and fast star formation. This interpretation would help us to link a present-day structure with those observed in formation in the centre of high-redshift galaxies. Finally, metal-poor stars may correspond to the metal-rich tail of the population sampled at lower metallicity from the study of RR Lyrae stars. Metal-poor stars are important tools for tracing the early history of the Milky Way, and for learning about the first generations of stars. Simulations suggest that the oldest metal-poor stars are to be found in the inner Galaxy. Typical bulge surveys, however, lack low metallicity (⁠|$\rm {[Fe/H]} \lt -1.0$|⁠) stars because the inner Galaxy is predominantly metal-rich. The aim of the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) is to study the metal-poor and very metal-poor (VMP, |$\rm {[Fe/H]} \lt -2.0$|⁠) stars in this region. In PIGS, metal-poor targets for spectroscopic follow-up are selected from metallicity-sensitive CaHK photometry from the CFHT. This work presents the ∼250 deg2 photometric survey as well as intermediate-resolution spectroscopic follow-up observations for ∼8000 stars using AAOmega on the AAT. The spectra are analysed using two independent tools: ULySS with an empirical spectral library, and FERRE with a library of synthetic spectra. The comparison between the two methods enables a robust determination of the stellar parameters and their uncertainties. We present a sample of 1300 VMP stars – the largest sample of VMP stars in the inner Galaxy to date. Additionally, our spectroscopic data set includes ∼1700 horizontal branch stars, which are useful metal-poor standard candles. We furthermore show that PIGS photometry selects VMP stars with unprecedented efficiency: 86 per cent/80 per cent (lower/higher extinction) of the best candidates satisfy |$\rm {[Fe/H]} \lt -2.0$|⁠ , as do 80 per cent/63 per cent of a larger, less strictly selected sample. We investigate the Fe, C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ce, and Nd abundances of 2283 red giant stars in 31 globular clusters from high-resolution spectra observed in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere by the SDSS-IV APOGEE-2 survey. This unprecedented homogeneous data set, largest to date, allows us to discuss the intrinsic Fe spread, the shape, and statistics of Al-Mg and N-C anti-correlations as a function of cluster mass, luminosity, age, and metallicity for all 31 clusters. We find that the Fe spread does not depend on these parameters within our uncertainties including cluster metallicity, contradicting earlier observations. We do not confirm the metallicity variations previously observed in M22 and NGC 1851. Some clusters show a bimodal Al distribution, while others exhibit a continuous distribution as has been previously reported in the literature. We confirm more than two populations in ω Cen and NGC 6752, and find new ones in M79. We discuss the scatter of Al by implementing a correction to the standard chemical evolution of Al in the Milky Way. After correction, its dependence on cluster mass is increased suggesting that the extent of Al enrichment as a function of mass was suppressed before the correction. We observe a turnover in the Mg-Al anticorrelation at very low Mg in ω Cen, similar to the pattern previously reported in M15 and M92. ω Cen may also have a weak K-Mg anticorrelation, and if confirmed, it would be only the third cluster known to show such a pattern. Objective In response to the national opioid crisis, governmental and medical organizations have called for broader insurance coverage of acupuncture to improve access to nonpharmacologic pain therapies, especially in cancer populations, where undertreatment of pain is prevalent. We evaluated whether cancer patients would be willing to use insurance-covered acupuncture for pain. Design and Setting We conducted a cross-sectional survey of cancer patients with pain at one academic center and 11 community hospitals. Methods We used logistic regression models to examine factors associated with willingness to use insurance-covered acupuncture for pain. Results Among 634 cancer patients, 304 (47.9%) reported willingness to use insurance-covered acupuncture for pain. In univariate analyses, patients were more likely to report willingness if they had severe pain (odds ratio [OR] = 1.59, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.03–2.45) but were less likely if they were nonwhite (OR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.39–0.90) or had only received high school education or less (OR = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.32–0.65). After adjusting for attitudes and beliefs in multivariable analyses, willingness was no longer significantly associated with education (adjusted OR [aOR] = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.50–1.21) and was more negatively associated with nonwhite race (aOR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.29–0.84). Conclusions Approximately one in two cancer patients was willing to use insurance-covered acupuncture for pain. Willingness was influenced by patients' attitudes and beliefs, which are potentially modifiable through counseling and education. Background: The purpose of this nonrandomized, open‐label, phase I study (NCT01285037) was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of merestinib, an oral antiproliferative and antiangiogenic kinase inhibitor, and to determine a recommended phase II dose and schedule for patients with advanced cancer. Materials and Methods: This was a multicenter, nonrandomized, open‐label, phase I study of oral merestinib consisting of six parts: dose escalation (part A), followed by a four‐cohort dose‐confirmation study (part B) and subsequently a four‐part dose expansion and combination safety testing of merestinib with standard doses of cetuximab (part C), cisplatin (part D), gemcitabine and cisplatin (part E), and ramucirumab (part F) in patients with specific types of advanced cancers. Safety, tolerability, antitumor activity, and pharmacokinetics were evaluated in all cohorts. Results: The dose escalation, confirmation, and expansion results support the dosing of merestinib at 120 mg once daily, based on acceptable exposure and safety at this dose. One complete response was observed in a patient with cholangiocarcinoma, and three patients with cholangiocarcinoma achieved a partial response. Overall, 60 (32%) of the 186 patients enrolled in the study had a best response of stable disease. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that merestinib has a tolerable safety profile and potential anticancer activity and warrants further clinical investigation. Implications for Practice: Merestinib treatment in patients with advanced cancer demonstrated an acceptable safety profile and potential antitumor activity, supporting its future development in specific disease populations as a monotherapy and/or in combination with other therapies. Background: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy is an established component of the nonoperative management of locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), but the standard dose of 100 mg/m2 cisplatin every 3 weeks is associated with clinically significant toxicity. Interest in a more tolerable regimen has led to the widespread use of weekly lower dose cisplatin, but few randomized trials have compared these approaches.Methods: We examined outcomes of patients with stage III-IVb HNSCC treated with definitive intent chemoradiotherapy using either high-dose cisplatin (HDC) or low-dose cisplatin (LDC), using population-based Veterans Affairs data. In an intent-to-treat analysis, patients were assigned to the HDC vs LDC group according to the dose of their first cycle. Variables potentially influencing treatment decisions including cancer site, stage, smoking/alcohol use, and comorbidities were used to generate propensity scores (PS) for the use of HDC. We compared overall survival (OS) by treatment group using Cox regression, adjusting for PS. We then determined the risk of toxicities using PS-adjusted logistic regression.Results: A total of 2901 patients were included in the analysis; 2200 received HDC (mean initial dose 100 mg/m2). The mean initial dose of LDC was 40 mg/m2. After PS adjustment, HDC was not associated with improved OS over LDC (hazard ratio = 0.94, 95% confidence interval = 0.80 to 1.04). Adjusting for PS, HDC was associated with an increased risk of acute kidney injury, neutropenia, dehydration/electrolyte disturbance, and hearing loss.Conclusion: In this large, population-based study of US military veterans, LDC was associated with similar survival to HDC in the nonoperative definitive management of locally advanced HNSCC of the oral cavity, oropharynx, and hypopharynx/larynx. Background In RAS-mutant tumors, combined MEK and autophagy inhibition using chloroquine demonstrated synthetic lethality in preclinical studies. This phase II trial evaluated the safety and activity of the MEK inhibitor binimetinib combined with hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in patients with advanced KRAS -mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Methods Eligibility criteria included KRAS- mutant NSCLC, progression after first-line therapy, ECOG PS 0-1, and adequate end-organ function. Binimetinib 45 mg was administered orally (p.o.) bid with HCQ 400 mg p.o. bid. The primary endpoint was objective response rate (ORR). A Simon's 2-stage phase II clinical trial design was used, with an α error of 5% and a power β of 80%, anticipating an ORR of 30% to proceed to the 2-stage expansion. Results Between April 2021 and January 2022, 9 patients were enrolled to stage I: median age 64 years, 44.4% females, 78% smokers. The best response was stable disease in one patient (11.1%). The median progression free survival (PFS) was 1.9 months, and median overall survival (OS) was 5.3 months. Overall, 5 patients (55.6%) developed a grade 3 adverse event (AE). The most common grade 3 toxicity was rash (33%). Pre-specified criteria for stopping the trial early due to lack of efficacy were met. Conclusion The combination of B + HCQ in second- or later-line treatment of patients with advanced KRAS-mutant NSCLC did not show significant antitumor activity. We leverage new high-quality data from Hubble Space Telescope program GO-14164 to explore the variation in horizontal branch morphology among globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our new observations lead to photometry with a precision commensurate with that available for the Galactic globular cluster population. Our analysis indicates that, once metallicity is accounted for, clusters in the LMC largely share similar horizontal branch morphologies regardless of their location within the system. Furthermore, the LMC clusters possess, on average, slightly redder morphologies than most of the inner halo Galactic population; we find, instead, that their characteristics tend to be more similar to those exhibited by clusters in the outer Galactic halo. We analyse Hubble Space Telescope observations of six globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) from programme GO-14164 in Cycle 23. These are the deepest available observations of the LMC globular cluster population; their uniformity facilitates a precise comparison with globular clusters in the Milky Way. Measuring the magnitude of the main-sequence turn-off point relative to template Galactic globular clusters allows the relative ages of the clusters to be determined with a mean precision of 8.4 per cent, and down to 6 per cent for individual objects. We find that the mean age of our LMC cluster ensemble is identical to the mean age of the oldest metal-poor clusters in the Milky Way halo to 0.2 ± 0.4 Gyr. This provides the most sensitive test to date of the synchronicity of the earliest epoch of globular cluster formation in two independent galaxies. Horizontal branch magnitudes and subdwarf fitting to the main sequence allow us to determine distance estimates for each cluster and examine their geometric distribution in the LMC. Multiple populations revealed in globular clusters (GCs) are important windows to the formation and evolution of these stellar systems. The metal-rich GCs in the Galactic bulge are an indispensable part of this picture, but the high optical extinction in this region has prevented extensive research. In this work, we use the high-resolution near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic data from Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) to study the chemical abundances of NGC 6553, which is one of the most metal-rich bulge GCs. We identify 10 red giants as cluster members using their positions, radial velocities, iron abundances, and NIR photometry. Our sample stars show a mean radial velocity of -0.14 ± 5.47 km s-1, and a mean [Fe/H] of -0.15 ± 0.05. We clearly separate two populations of stars in C and N in this GC for the first time. NGC 6553 is the most metal-rich GC where the multiple stellar population phenomenon is found until now. Substantial chemical variations are also found in Na, O, and Al. However, the two populations show similar Si, Ca, and iron-peak element abundances. Therefore, we infer that the CNO, NeNa, and MgAl cycles have been activated, but the MgAl cycle is too weak to show its effect on Mg. Type Ia and Type II supernovae do not seem to have significantly polluted the second generation stars. Comparing with other GC studies, NGC 6553 shows similar chemical variations as other relatively metal-rich GCs. We present wide-field JHKS photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the Two Micron All-Sky Survey photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used to build distance- and reddening-independent relations between observed photometric features and cluster metallicity, optimizing the sample size and metallicity baseline of these relations by supplementing our sample with results from the literature. We find that the magnitude difference between the HB and the RGB bump can be used to predict metallicities, in terms of both iron abundance [Fe/H] and global metallicity [M/H], with a precision of better than 0.1 dex in all three near-IR bandpasses for relatively metal-rich ([M/H] ≳ -1) clusters. Meanwhile, both the slope of the upper RGB and the magnitude difference between the RGB tip and bump are useful metallicity indicators over the entire sampled metallicity range (-2 ≲ [M/H] ≲ 0) with a precision of 0.2 dex or better, despite model predictions that the RGB slope may become unreliable at high (near-solar) metallicities. Our results agree with previous calibrations in light of the relevant uncertainties, and we discuss implications for clusters with controversial metallicities as well as directions for further investigation. Objective: Risk of nodal involvement in patients with sinonasal small-cell carcinoma and sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma (SNUC) has not been well defined because of their rarity. We describe a population-based assessment of specific nodal level involvement in this group of rare neuroectodermal tumours. Methods: The Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database from 2004 to 2011 identified patients with SNUC and sinonasal small-cell carcinoma. Overall neck involvement and individual nodal level involvement at presentation were assessed, and comparison was made with a contemporaneous cohort of patients with a borderline clinically significant risk of nodal involvement and recurrence. Results: Of 141 patients, 31 (22%) had gross nodal involvement at presentation (range 14-33% by site and histology). Non-nasal, non-ethmoid site with SNUC histology has the highest rates of initial nodal involvement, whereas higher stage and size do not predict for higher nodal involvement rates. Bilateral Levels 2-3 for all sinonasal small cell; Levels 2-3 for nasal or ethmoid SNUC; and bilateral Levels 1-3 in non-nasal/non-ethmoid SNUC have the highest rates of involvement compared with a clinical reference standard. Conclusion: We found high rates of initial nodal involvement in all SNUC and sinonasal small-cell carcinoma. We found higher initial involvement of Levels 2 and 3 and in certain cases to the Level 1 nodal levels, hypothesizing benefit for elective treatment to those levels. ABSTRACT This study is aimed at investigating the period-luminosity relation of SX Phoenicis (SX Phe) pulsators in Galactic globular clusters (GGCs) and Local Group dwarf galaxies. We verify isochrone-fitting distances of 46 GGCs by fitting their main sequences to a carefully chosen set of nearby, unevolved subdwarfs. We find that the difference between cluster distances obtained via isochrone fitting by Dotter et al. and those resulting from our subdwarf fits has a mean of 0.094 mag and a standard deviation of 0.098 mag. The cluster distances from Dotter et al. are used to calibrate an SX Phe period--luminosity relation based on radial double mode pulsators. The resulting empirical period-luminosity relation, which is insensitive to the inclusion of colour and/or metallicity terms, generally agrees well with previous empirical relations as well as theoretical predictions based on single-star pulsational and evolutionary models. However, there is a subset of 'subluminous' variables identified most notably in Fornax, Carina, NGC 2419 and Omega Centauri. We explore the possibility that, at least in GGCs, they represent blue stragglers which have enhanced helium content that was either inherited from second-generation progenitors or gained as a result of the blue straggler formation process. A pilot study was initiated to explore a sequential combination antiretroviral regimen in 21 patients with AIDS or advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, who had received little or no prior anti-HIV therapy. The mean entry CD4 cell count was 184/mm3. Patients received 3-week cycles consisting of zidovudine plus acyclovir, dideoxyinosine, and dideoxycytidine for 1 week each. Overall, the regimen was well tolerated for up to 3 years. The principal toxicities were anemia, nausea, and vomiting; 1 patient developed retinal lesions. The mean CD4 cell count reached a peak of 64 cells/mm3 above baseline at week 8 (P = .005 compared to baseline) and remained above baseline for >40 weeks. Patients also gained weight and had decreases in serum HIV p24 antigen. Eight patients developed opportunistic infections or tumors. Only 4 patients died during 3 years of follow-up. This regimen appears to be generally tolerable and to have anti-HIV activity. One approach to reduce treatment-related morbidity for human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated tonsil cancer is omitting radiotherapy to the contralateral neck. Pathologic risk factors for early contralateral neck disease, however, are poorly understood. We report on the risk contralateral neck failures from the time of pre-operative diagnostic imaging to time of planning for adjuvant radiation in a single institution series of HPV-associated tonsillar cancer patients undergoing surgery followed by radiotherapy (RT). Retrospective analysis of 123 patients with T1–T3 HPV-positive tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma treated between 2010 and 2016 with transoral robotic surgery and selective ipsilateral neck dissection followed by adjuvant RT. Contralateral neck recurrence was classified as the detection of a pathologic node in the contralateral neck prior to initiation of adjuvant RT. Seven patients (5.7%) developed contralateral neck disease/failure between the time of pre-operative diagnostic neck imaging and time of planning of adjuvant radiation. Increased ratio of positive/resected nodes [odds ratio (OR) 1.073, p = 0.005] was significantly associated with increased risk of contralateral neck recurrence, with a trend found for close/positive margins (OR 5.355, p = 0.06), tumor size (OR 2.046, p = 0.09), and total number of nodes positive (OR 1.179, p = 0.062). Patients who develop very early contralateral neck disease, between completion of ipsilateral neck dissection and the initiation of radiotherapy, have a higher ratio of positive nodes to total nodes resected in the ipsilateral neck. These findings suggest that proper selection of patients for omission of treatment of the contralateral, node-negative neck should be made with this in mind, with future studies needed to document the impact on toxicity and disease outcomes from such an approach. Pathologic risk factors in the dissected, ipsilateral neck in patients with tonsil cancer may inform the risk of contralateral neck failure.
