The research groups in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning have dedicated a substantial amount of attention to the areas of 3D object reconstruction, augmentation, and registration. Deep learning is the predominant method used in artificial intelligence for addressing computer vision challenges. However, deep learning on three-dimensional data presents distinct obstacles and is now in its nascent phase. There have been significant advancements in deep learning specifically for three-dimensional data, offering a range of ways to address these issues. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the latest advancements in deep learning methodologies. We examine many benchmark models for the tasks of 3D object registration, augmentation, and reconstruction. We thoroughly analyse their architectures, advantages, and constraints. In summary, this report provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in three-dimensional deep learning and highlights unresolved research areas that will need to be addressed in the future.

Quality assessment in industrial applications is often carried out through visual inspection, usually performed or supported by human domain experts. However, the manual visual inspection of processes and products is error-prone and expensive. It is therefore not surprising that the automation of visual inspection in manufacturing and maintenance is heavily researched and discussed. The use of artificial intelligence as an approach to visual inspection in industrial applications has been considered for decades. Recent successes, driven by advances in deep learning, present a possible paradigm shift and have the potential to facilitate automated visual inspection, even under complex environmental conditions. For this reason, we explore the question of to what extent deep learning is already being used in the field of automated visual inspection and which potential improvements to the state of the art could be realized utilizing concepts from academic research. By conducting an extensive review of the openly accessible literature, we provide an overview of proposed and in-use deep-learning models presented in recent years. Our survey consists of 196 open-access publications, of which 31.7% are manufacturing use cases and 68.3% are maintenance use cases. Furthermore, the survey also shows that the majority of the models currently in use are based on convolutional neural networks, the current de facto standard for image classification, object recognition, or object segmentation tasks. Nevertheless, we see the emergence of vision transformer models that seem to outperform convolutional neural networks but require more resources, which also opens up new research opportunities for the future. Another finding is that in 97% of the publications, the authors use supervised learning techniques to train their models. However, with the median dataset size consisting of 2500 samples, deep-learning models cannot be trained from scratch, so it would be beneficial to use other training paradigms, such as self-supervised learning. In addition, we identified a gap of approximately three years between approaches from deep-learning-based computer vision being published and their introduction in industrial visual inspection applications. Based on our findings, we additionally discuss potential future developments in the area of automated visual inspection.

To explore whether the brain contains pattern differences in the rock–paper–scissors (RPS) imagery task, this paper attempts to classify this task using fNIRS and deep learning. In this study, we designed an RPS task with a total duration of 25 min and 40 s, and recruited 22 volunteers for the experiment. We used the fNIRS acquisition device (FOIRE-3000) to record the cerebral neural activities of these participants in the RPS task. The time series classification (TSC) algorithm was introduced into the time-domain fNIRS signal classification. Experiments show that CNN-based TSC methods can achieve 97% accuracy in RPS classification. CNN-based TSC method is suitable for the classification of fNIRS signals in RPS motor imagery tasks, and may find new application directions for the development of brain–computer interfaces (BCI).

With advances in science and technology and changes in industry, research on promising future technologies has emerged as important. Furthermore, with the advent of a ubiquitous and smart environment, governments and enterprises are required to predict future promising technologies on which new important core technologies will be developed. Therefore, this study aimed to establish science and technology development strategies and support business activities by predicting future promising technologies using big data and deep learning models. The names of the “TOP 10 Emerging Technologies” from 2018 to 2021 selected by the World Economic Forum were used as keywords. Next, patents collected from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and the Science Citation Index (SCI) papers collected from the Web of Science database were analyzed using a time-series forecast. For each technology, the number of patents and SCI papers in 2022, 2023 and 2024 were predicted using the long short-term memory model with the number of patents and SCI papers from 1980 to 2021 as input data. Promising technologies are determined based on the predicted number of patents and SCI papers for the next three years. Keywords characterizing future promising technologies are extracted by analyzing abstracts of patent data collected for each technology and the term frequency-inverse document frequency is measured for each patent abstract. The research results can help business managers make optimal decisions in the present situation and provide researchers with an understanding of the direction of technology development.

In any document, graphical elements like tables, figures, and formulas contain essential information. The processing and interpretation of such information require specialized algorithms. Off-the-shelf OCR components cannot process this information reliably. Therefore, an essential step in document analysis pipelines is to detect these graphical components. It leads to a high-level conceptual understanding of the documents that make the digitization of documents viable. Since the advent of deep learning, deep learning-based object detection performance has improved many folds. This work outlines and summarizes the deep learning approaches for detecting graphical page objects in document images. Therefore, we discuss the most relevant deep learning-based approaches and state-of-the-art graphical page object detection in document images. This work provides a comprehensive understanding of the current state-of-the-art and related challenges. Furthermore, we discuss leading datasets along with the quantitative evaluation. Moreover, it discusses briefly the promising directions that can be utilized for further improvements.

Using instance segmentation and video inpainting provides a significant leap in real-time football video broadcast enhancements by removing potential visual distractions, such as an occasional person or another object accidentally occupying the frame. Despite its relevance and importance in the media industry, this area remains challenging and relatively understudied, thus offering potential for research. Specifically, the segmentation and inpainting of camera operator instances from video remains an underexplored research area. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a framework designed to accurately detect and remove camera operators while seamlessly hallucinating the background in real-time football broadcasts. The approach aims to enhance the quality of the broadcast by maintaining its consistency and level of engagement to retain and attract users during the game. To implement the inpainting task, firstly, the camera operators instance segmentation method should be developed. We used a YOLOv8 model for accurate real-time operator instance segmentation. The resulting model produces masked frames, which are used for further camera operator inpainting. Moreover, this paper presents an extensive “Cameramen Instances” dataset with more than 7500 samples, which serves as a solid foundation for future investigations in this area. The experimental results show that the YOLOv8 model performs better than other baseline algorithms in different scenarios. The precision of 95.5%, recall of 92.7%, mAP50-95 of 79.6, and a high FPS rate of 87 in low-volume environment prove the solution efficacy for real-time applications.

This paper presents a novel deep-learning network designed to detect intervals of jump discontinuities in single-variable piecewise smooth functions from their noisy samples. Enhancing the accuracy of jump discontinuity estimations can be used to find a more precise overall approximation of the function, as traditional approximation methods often produce significant errors near discontinuities. Detecting intervals of discontinuities is relatively straightforward when working with exact function data, as finite differences in the data can serve as indicators of smoothness. However, these smoothness indicators become unreliable when dealing with highly noisy data. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning network to pinpoint the location of a jump discontinuity even in the presence of substantial noise.

Deep learning has recently demonstrated the ability to predict long-term patient risk and its stratification when trained on imaging data such as chest radiographs. However, existing methods formulate estimating patient risk as a binary classification, typically ignoring or limiting the use of temporal information, and not accounting for the loss of patient follow-up, which reduces the fidelity of estimation and limits the prediction to a certain time horizon. In this paper, we demonstrate that deep survival and time-to-event prediction models can outperform binary classifiers at predicting mortality and risk of adverse health events. In our study, deep survival models were trained to predict risk scores from chest radiographs and patient demographic information in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) cancer screening trial (25,433 patient data points used in this paper) for 2-, 5-, and 10-year time horizons. Binary classification models that predict mortality at these time horizons were built as baselines. Compared to the considered alternative, deep survival models improve the Brier score (5-year: 0.0455 [95% CI, 0.0427–0.0482] vs. 0.0555 [95% CI, (0.0535–0.0575)], p < 0.05) and expected calibration error (ECE) (5-year: 0.0110 [95% CI, 0.0080–0.0141] vs. 0.0747 [95% CI, 0.0718–0.0776], p < 0.05) for those fixed time horizons and are able to generate predictions for any time horizon, without the need to retrain the models. Our study suggests that deep survival analysis tools can outperform binary classification in terms of both discriminative performance and calibration, offering a potentially plausible solution for forecasting risk in clinical practice.

Increasing numbers of public and private locations now have surveillance cameras installed to make those areas more secure. Even though many organizations still hire someone to monitor the cameras, the person hired is more likely to miss some unexpected events in the video feeds because of human error. Several researchers have worked on surveillance data and have presented a number of approaches for automatically detecting aberrant events. To keep track of all the video data that accumulate, a supervisor is often required. To analyze the video data automatically, we recommend using neural networks to identify the crimes happening in the real world. Through our approach, it will be easier for police agencies to discover and assess criminal activity more quickly using our method, which will reduce the burden on their staff. In this paper, we aim to provide anomaly detection using surveillance videos as input specifically for the crimes of arson, burglary, stealing, and vandalism. It will provide an efficient and adaptable crime-detection system if integrated across the smart city infrastructure. In our project, we trained multiple accurate deep learning models for object detection and crime classification for arson, burglary and vandalism. For arson, the videos were trained using YOLOv5. Similarly for burglary and vandalism, we trained using YOLOv7 and YOLOv6, respectively. When the models were compared, YOLOv7 performed better with the highest mAP of 87. In this, we could not compare the model’s performance based on crime type because all the datasets for each crime type varied. So, for arson YOLOv5 performed well with 80% mAP and for vandalism, YOLOv6 performed well with 86% mAP. This paper designed an automatic identification of crime types based on camera or surveillance video in the absence of a monitoring person, and alerts registered users about crimes such as arson, burglary, and vandalism through an SMS service. To detect the object of the crime in the video, we trained five different machine learning models: Improved YOLOv5 for arson, Faster RCNN and YOLOv7 for burglary, and SSD MobileNet and YOLOv6 for vandalism. Other than improved models, we innovated by building ensemble models of all three crime types. The main aim of the project is to provide security to the society without human involvement and make affordable surveillance cameras to detect and classify crimes. In addition, we implemented the Web system design using the built package in Python, which is Gradio. This helps the registered user of the Twilio communication tool to receive alert messages when any suspicious activity happens around their communities.

With the increasing dominance of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, the important prospects for their application have extended to various medical fields, including domains such as in vitro diagnosis, intelligent rehabilitation, medical imaging, and prognosis. Breast cancer is a common malignancy that critically affects women’s physical and mental health. Early breast cancer screening—through mammography, ultrasound, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)—can substantially improve the prognosis for breast cancer patients. AI applications have shown excellent performance in various image recognition tasks, and their use in breast cancer screening has been explored in numerous studies. This paper introduces relevant AI techniques and their applications in the field of medical imaging of the breast (mammography and ultrasound), specifically in terms of identifying, segmenting, and classifying lesions; assessing breast cancer risk; and improving image quality. Focusing on medical imaging for breast cancer, this paper also reviews related challenges and prospects for AI.

Background: This research goes into in deep learning technologies within the realm of medical imaging, with a specific focus on the detection of anomalies in medical pathology, emphasizing breast cancer. It underscores the critical importance of segmentation techniques in identifying diseases and addresses the challenges of scarce labelled data in Whole Slide Images. Additionally, the paper provides a review, cataloguing 61 deep learning architectures identified during the study. Objectives: The aim of this study is to present and assess a novel quantitative approach utilizing specific deep learning architectures, namely the Feature Pyramid Net-work and the Linknet model, both of which integrate a ResNet34 layer encoder to enhance performance. The paper also seeks to examine the efficiency of a semi-supervised training regimen using a dual model architecture, consisting of ‘Teacher’ and ‘Student’ models, in addressing the issue of limited labelled datasets. Methods: Employing a semi-supervised training methodology, this research enables the ‘Student’ model to learn from the ‘Teacher’ model’s outputs. The study methodically evaluates the models’ stability, accuracy, and segmentation capabilities, employing metrics such as the Dice Coefficient and the Jaccard Index for comprehensive assessment. Results: The investigation reveals that the Linknet model exhibits good performance, achieving an accuracy rate of 94% in the detection of breast cancer tissues utilizing a 21-seed parameter for the initialization of model weights. It further excels in generating annotations for the ‘Student’ model, which then achieves a 91% accuracy with minimal computational demands. Conversely, the Feature Pyramid Network model demonstrates a slightly lower accuracy of 93% in the Teacher model but exhibits improved and more consistent results in the ‘Student’ model, reaching 95% accuracy with a 42-seed parameter. Conclusions: This study underscores the efficacy and potential of the Feature Pyra-mid Network and Linknet models in the domain of medical image analysis, particularly in the detection of breast cancer, and suggests their broader applicability in various medical segmentation tasks related to other pathology disorders. Furthermore, the research enhances the understanding of the pivotal role that deep learning technologies play in advancing diagnostic methods within the field of medical imaging.

This paper addresses the evolving landscape of communication technology, emphasizing the pivotal role of 5G and the emerging 6G networks in accommodating the increasing demand for high-speed and accurate data transmission. We delve into the advancements in 5G technology, particularly the implementation of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies ranging from 30 to 300 GHz. These advancements are instrumental in enhancing applications requiring massive data transmission and reception, facilitated by massive MIMO (multiple input multiple output) systems. Looking towards the future, this paper forecasts the necessity for faster data transmission technologies, shifting the focus toward the development of 6G networks. These future networks are projected to employ ultra-massive MIMO systems in the terahertz band, operating within 0.1–10 THz frequency ranges. A significant part of our research is dedicated to exploring advanced signal detection techniques, helping to mitigate the impact of interference and improve accuracy in data transmission and enabling more efficient communication, even in environments with high levels of noise, and including zero forcing (ZF) and minimum mean square error (MMSE) methods, which form the cornerstone of our proposed approach. Additionally, signal detection contributes to the development of new communication technologies such as 5G and 6G, which require a high data transmission efficiency and rapid response speeds. The core contribution of this study lies in the application of deep learning to signal detection in ultra-massive MIMO systems, a critical component of 6G technology. We compare this approach with existing ELMx-based machine learning methods, focusing on algorithmic efficiency and computational performance. Our comparative analysis included the regularized extreme learning machine (RELM) and the outlier robust extreme learning machine (ORELM), juxtaposed with ZF and MMSE methods. Simulation results indicated the superiority of our convolutional neural network for signal detection (CNN-SD) over the traditional ELMx-based, ZF, and MMSE methods, particularly in terms of channel capacity and bit error rate. Furthermore, we demonstrate the computational efficiency and reduced complexity of the CNN-SD method, underscoring its suitability for future expansive MIMO systems.

Given the climate change in recent decades and the ever-increasing energy consumption in the building sector, research is widely focused on the green revolution and ecological transition of buildings. In this regard, artificial intelligence can be a precious tool to simulate and optimize building energy performance, as shown by a plethora of recent studies. Accordingly, this paper provides a review of more than 70 articles from recent years, i.e., mostly from 2018 to 2023, about the applications of machine/deep learning (ML/DL) in forecasting the energy performance of buildings and their simulation/control/optimization. This review was conducted using the SCOPUS database with the keywords “buildings”, “energy”, “machine learning” and “deep learning” and by selecting recent papers addressing the following applications: energy design/retrofit optimization, prediction, control/management of heating/cooling systems and of renewable source systems, and/or fault detection. Notably, this paper discusses the main differences between ML and DL techniques, showing examples of their use in building energy simulation/control/optimization. The main aim is to group the most frequent ML/DL techniques used in the field of building energy performance, highlighting the potentiality and limitations of each one, both fundamental aspects for future studies. The ML approaches considered are decision trees/random forest, naive Bayes, support vector machines, the Kriging method and artificial neural networks. The DL techniques investigated are convolutional and recursive neural networks, long short-term memory and gated recurrent units. Firstly, various ML/DL techniques are explained and divided based on their methodology. Secondly, grouping by the aforementioned applications occurs. It emerges that ML is mostly used in energy efficiency issues while DL in the management of renewable source systems.

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) play an important role in regulating biological processes, such as gene regulation. Understanding their behaviors, for example, their binding site, can be helpful in understanding RBP-related diseases. Studies have focused on predicting RNA binding by means of machine learning algorithms including deep convolutional neural network models. One of the integral parts of modeling deep learning is achieving optimal hyperparameter tuning and minimizing a loss function using optimization algorithms. In this paper, we investigate the role of optimization in the RBP classification problem using the CLIP-Seq 21 dataset. Three optimization methods are employed on the RNA–protein binding CNN prediction model; namely, grid search, random search, and Bayesian optimizer. The empirical results show an AUC of 94.42%, 93.78%, 93.23% and 92.68% on the ELAVL1C, ELAVL1B, ELAVL1A, and HNRNPC datasets, respectively, and a mean AUC of 85.30 on 24 datasets. This paper’s findings provide evidence on the role of optimizers in improving the performance of RNA–protein binding prediction.

Concrete stands as the most widely used construction material globally due to its versatility, encompassing applications ranging from pavement, multifloor structures, and bridges to dams. However, these concrete structures endure structural stress and require close monitoring to prevent accidents and ensure sustainability throughout their complete life cycle. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision (CV) have demonstrated considerable potential in diverse applications within construction engineering, including structural health monitoring (SHM) and inspection processes such as crack and damage detection, as well as rebar exposure. While it is undeniable that CV and deep learning models are transforming the construction industry by offering robust solutions for complex scenarios, there remain numerous challenges pertinent to their applications that require attention. This paper aims to systematically and critically review the literature of the past decade on the application of deep learning models in the construction industry for SHM purposes in concrete structures. The review delves into proposed methodologies and technologies while identifying opportunities and challenges associated with these applications in practice. Additionally, the paper provides insights to bridge the gap between theory and application.

Human Pose Estimation (HPE) is the task that aims to predict the location of human joints from images and videos. This task is used in many applications, such as sports analysis and surveillance systems. Recently, several studies have embraced deep learning to enhance the performance of HPE tasks. However, building an efficient HPE model is difficult; many challenges, like crowded scenes and occlusion, must be handled. This paper followed a systematic procedure to review different HPE models comprehensively. About 100 articles published since 2014 on HPE using deep learning were selected using several selection criteria. Both image and video data types of methods were investigated. Furthermore, both single and multiple HPE methods were reviewed. In addition, the available datasets, different loss functions used in HPE, and pretrained feature extraction models were all covered. Our analysis revealed that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) are the most used in HPE. Moreover, occlusion and crowd scenes remain the main problems affecting models’ performance. Therefore, the paper presented various solutions to address these issues. Finally, this paper highlighted the potential opportunities for future work in this task.

The falling cost of IoT cameras, the advancement of AI-based computer vision algorithms, and powerful hardware accelerators for deep learning have enabled the widespread deployment of surveillance cameras with the ability to automatically analyze streaming video feeds to detect events of interest. While streaming video analytics is currently largely performed in the cloud, edge computing has emerged as a pivotal component due to its advantages of low latency, reduced bandwidth, and enhanced privacy. However, a distinct gap persists between state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms and the successful practical implementation of edge-based streaming video analytics systems. This paper presents a comprehensive review of more than 30 research papers published over the last 6 years on IoT edge streaming video analytics (IE-SVA) systems. The papers are analyzed across 17 distinct dimensions. Unlike prior reviews, we examine each system holistically, identifying their strengths and weaknesses in diverse implementations. Our findings suggest that certain critical topics necessary for the practical realization of IE-SVA systems are not sufficiently addressed in current research. Based on these observations, we propose research trajectories across short-, medium-, and long-term horizons. Additionally, we explore trending topics in other computing areas that can significantly impact the evolution of IE-SVA systems.

In order to improve the precision of phase recognition and reduce the rate of misdetection, this paper applies the deep learning method to automatic phase recognition. In this paper, an automatic seismic phase recognition model based on the Bi-LSTM network is designed. To test the performance of this model, the STEAD dataset is used for training and testing, and this model is compared with the traditional STA/LTA and AIC methods. The experimental results show that, compared to STA/LTA and AIC methods, the Bi-LSTM network can reduce the misdetection rate by about 8–15%, and improve the RSEM; especially, the prediction error of S-wave is greatly reduced.

Text matching promotes the research and application of deep understanding of text information, and it provides the basis for information retrieval, recommendation systems and natural language processing by exploring the similar structures in text data. Owning to the outstanding performance and automatically extract text features for the target, the methods based-pre-training models gradually become the mainstream. However, such models usually suffer from the disadvantages of slow retrieval speed and low running efficiency. On the other hand, previous text matching algorithms have mainly focused on horizontal domain research, and there are relatively few vertical domain algorithms for agricultural text, which need to be further investigated. To address this issue, a second-order text matching algorithm has been developed. This paper first obtains a large amount of text about typical agricultural crops and constructs a database by using web crawlers and querying relevant textbooks, etc. Then BM25 algorithm is used to generate a candidate set and BERT model is used to filter the optimal match based on the candidate set. Experiments have shown that the Precision@1 of this second-order algorithm can reach 88.34% on the dataset constructed in this paper, and the average time to match a piece of text is only 2.02 s. Compared with BERT model and BM25 algorithm, there is an increase of 8.81% and 13.73% in Precision@1 respectively. In terms of the average time required for matching a text, it is 55.2 s faster than BERT model and only 2 s slower than BM25 algorithm. It can improve the efficiency and accuracy of agricultural information retrieval, agricultural decision support, agricultural market analysis, etc., and promote the sustainable development of agriculture.

The integration of edge computing with IoT (EC-IoT) systems provides significant improvements in addressing security and privacy challenges in IoT networks. This paper examines the combination of EC-IoT and artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting practical strategies to improve data and network security. The published literature has suggested decentralized and reliable trust measurement mechanisms and security frameworks designed explicitly for IoT-enabled systems. Therefore, this paper reviews the latest attack models threatening EC-IoT systems and their impacts on IoT networks. It also examines AI-based methods to counter these security threats and evaluates their effectiveness in real-world scenarios. Finally, this survey aims to guide future research by stressing the need for scalable, adaptable, and robust security solutions to address evolving threats in EC-IoT environments, focusing on the integration of AI to enhance the privacy, security, and efficiency of IoT systems while tackling the challenges of scalability and resource limitations.

Human action recognition has many application prospects in human-computer interactions, innovative furniture, healthcare, and other fields. The traditional human motion recognition methods have limitations in privacy protection, complex environments, and multi-person scenarios. Millimeter-wave radar has attracted attention due to its ultra-high resolution and all-weather operation. Many existing studies have discussed the application of millimeter-wave radar in single-person scenarios, but only some have addressed the problem of action recognition in multi-person scenarios. This paper uses a commercial millimeter-wave radar device for human action recognition in multi-person scenarios. In order to solve the problems of severe interference and complex target segmentation in multiplayer scenarios, we propose a filtering method based on millimeter-wave inter-frame differences to filter the collected human point cloud data. We then use the DBSCAN algorithm and the Hungarian algorithm to segment the target, and finally input the data into a neural network for classification. The classification accuracy of the system proposed in this paper reaches 92.2% in multi-person scenarios through experimental tests with the five actions we set.

When people tell lies, they often exhibit tension and emotional fluctuations, reflecting a complex psychological state. However, the scarcity of labeled data in datasets and the complexity of deception information pose significant challenges in extracting effective lie features, which severely restrict the accuracy of lie detection systems. To address this, this paper proposes a semi-supervised lie detection algorithm based on integrating multiple speech emotional features. Firstly, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Auto Encoder (AE) network process log Mel spectrogram features and acoustic statistical features, respectively, to capture the contextual links between similar features. Secondly, the joint attention model is used to learn the complementary relationship among different features to obtain feature representations with richer details. Lastly, the model combines the unsupervised loss Local Maximum Mean Discrepancy (LMMD) and supervised loss Jefferys multi-loss optimization to enhance the classification performance. Experimental results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper achieves better performance.

Named-entity recognition (NER) is a crucial task in natural language processing, especially for extracting meaningful information from unstructured text data. In the healthcare domain, accurate NER can significantly enhance patient care by enabling efficient extraction and analysis of clinical information. This paper presents MedNER, a novel service-oriented framework designed specifically for medical NER in Chinese medical texts. MedNER leverages advanced deep learning techniques and domain-specific linguistic resources to achieve good performance in identifying diabetes-related entities such as symptoms, tests, and drugs. The framework integrates seamlessly with real-world healthcare systems, offering scalable and efficient solutions for processing large volumes of clinical data. This paper provides an in-depth discussion on the architecture and implementation of MedNER, featuring the concept of Deep Learning as a Service (DLaaS). A prototype has encapsulated BiLSTM-CRF and BERT-BiLSTM-CRF models into the core service, demonstrating its flexibility, usability, and effectiveness in addressing the unique challenges of Chinese medical text processing.

This study uses deep learning methods to explore the Internet of Things (IoT) network intrusion detection method based on the CIC-IoT-2023 dataset. This dataset contains extensive data on real-life IoT environments. Based on this, this study proposes an effective intrusion detection method. Apply seven deep learning models, including Transformer, to analyze network traffic characteristics and identify abnormal behavior and potential intrusions through binary and multivariate classifications. Compared with other papers, we not only use a Transformer model, but we also consider the model’s performance in the multi-class classification. Although the accuracy of the Transformer model used in the binary classification is lower than that of DNN and CNN + LSTM hybrid models, it achieves better results in the multi-class classification. The accuracy of binary classification of our model is 0.74% higher than that of papers that also use Transformer on TON-IOT. In the multi-class classification, our best-performing model combination is Transformer, which reaches 99.40% accuracy. Its accuracy is 3.8%, 0.65%, and 0.29% higher than the 95.60%, 98.75%, and 99.11% figures recorded in papers using the same dataset, respectively.

Estimating the calorie content of fruits is critical for weight management and maintaining overall health as well as aiding individuals in making informed dietary choices. Accurate knowledge of fruit calorie content assists in crafting personalized nutrition plans and preventing obesity and associated health issues. In this paper, we investigate the application of deep learning models for estimating the calorie content in fruits from digital images, aiming to provide a more efficient and accurate method for nutritional analysis. We create a dataset comprising images of various fruits and employ random data augmentation techniques during training to enhance model robustness. We utilize the RT-DETR model integrated into the ultralytics framework for implementation and conduct comparative experiments with YOLOv10 on the dataset. Our results show that the RT-DETR model achieved a precision rate of 99.01% and mAP50-95 of 94.45% in fruit detection from digital images, outperforming YOLOv10 in terms of F1- Confidence Curves, P-R curves, precision, and mAP. Conclusively, in this paper, we utilize a transformer architecture to detect fruits and estimate their calorie and nutritional content. The results of the experiments provide a technical reference for more accurately monitoring an individual’s dietary intake by estimating the calorie content of fruits.

The maritime industry is integral to global trade and heavily depends on precise forecasting to maintain efficiency, safety, and economic sustainability. Adopting deep learning for predictive analysis has markedly improved operational accuracy, cost efficiency, and decision-making. This technology facilitates advanced time series analysis, vital for optimizing maritime operations. This paper reviews deep learning applications in time series analysis within the maritime industry, focusing on three areas: ship operation-related, port operation-related, and shipping market-related topics. It provides a detailed overview of the existing literature on applications such as ship trajectory prediction, ship fuel consumption prediction, port throughput prediction, and shipping market prediction. The paper comprehensively examines the primary deep learning architectures used for time series forecasting in the maritime industry, categorizing them into four principal types. It systematically analyzes the advantages of deep learning architectures across different application scenarios and explores methodologies for selecting models based on specific requirements. Additionally, it analyzes data sources from the existing literature and suggests future research directions.

Small UAV target detection and tracking based on cross-modality image fusion have gained widespread attention. Due to the limited feature information available from small UAVs in images, where they occupy a minimal number of pixels, the precision required for detection and tracking algorithms is particularly high in complex backgrounds. Image fusion techniques can enrich the detailed information for small UAVs, showing significant advantages under extreme lighting conditions. Image registration is a fundamental step preceding image fusion. It is essential to achieve accurate image alignment before proceeding with image fusion to prevent severe ghosting and artifacts. This paper specifically focused on the alignment of small UAV targets within infrared and visible light imagery. To address this issue, this paper proposed a cross-modality image registration network based on deep learning, which includes a structure preservation and style transformation network (SPSTN) and a multi-level cross-attention residual registration network (MCARN). Firstly, the SPSTN is employed for modality transformation, transferring the cross-modality task into a single-modality task to reduce the information discrepancy between modalities. Then, the MCARN is utilized for single-modality image registration, capable of deeply extracting and fusing features from pseudo infrared and visible images to achieve efficient registration. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comprehensive experimental evaluations were conducted on the Anti-UAV dataset. The extensive evaluation results validate the superiority and universality of the cross-modality image registration framework proposed in this paper, which plays a crucial role in subsequent image fusion tasks for more effective target detection.

Focusing on the problem of identifying and classifying aero-engine models, this paper measures the infrared spectrum data of aero-engine hot jets using a telemetry Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Simultaneously, infrared spectral data sets with the six different types of aero-engines were created. For the purpose of classifying and identifying infrared spectral data, a CNN architecture based on the continuous wavelet transform peak-seeking attention mechanism (CWT-AM-CNN) is suggested. This method calculates the peak value of middle wave band by continuous wavelet transform, and the peak data are extracted by the statistics of the wave number locations with high frequency. The attention mechanism was used for the peak data, and the attention mechanism was weighted to the feature map of the feature extraction block. The training set, validation set and prediction set were divided in the ratio of 8:1:1 for the infrared spectral data sets. For three different data sets, the CWT-AM-CNN proposed in this paper was compared with the classical classifier algorithm based on CO2 feature vector and the popular AE, RNN and LSTM spectral processing networks. The prediction accuracy of the proposed algorithm in the three data sets was as high as 97%, and the lightweight network structure design not only guarantees high precision, but also has a fast running speed, which can realize the rapid and high-precision classification of the infrared spectral data of the aero-engine hot jets.

Railway transportation has been integrated into people’s lives. According to the “Notice on the release of the General Technical Specification of High-speed Railway Power Supply Safety Testing (6C System) System” issued by the National Railway Administration of China in 2012, it is required to install pantograph and slide monitoring devices in high-speed railway stations, station throats and the inlet and exit lines of high-speed railway sections, and it is required to detect the damage of the slider with high precision. It can be seen that the good condition of the pantograph slider is very important for the normal operation of the railway system. As a part of providing power for high-speed rail and subway, the pantograph must be paid attention to in railway transportation to ensure its integrity. The wear of the pantograph is mainly due to the contact power supply between the slide block and the long wire during high-speed operation, which inevitably produces scratches, resulting in depressions on the upper surface of the pantograph slide block. During long-term use, because the depression is too deep, there is a risk of fracture. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the slider regularly and replace the slider with serious wear. At present, most of the traditional methods use automation technology or simple computer vision technology for detection, which is inefficient. Therefore, this paper introduces computer vision and deep learning technology into pantograph slide wear detection. Specifically, this paper mainly studies the wear detection of the pantograph slider based on deep learning and the main purpose is to improve the detection accuracy and improve the effect of segmentation. From a methodological perspective, this paper employs a linear array camera to enhance the quality of the data sets. Additionally, it integrates an attention mechanism to improve segmentation performance. Furthermore, this study introduces a novel image stitching method to address issues related to incomplete images, thereby providing a comprehensive solution.

Tool condition monitoring technology is an indispensable part of intelligent manufacturing. Most current research focuses on complex signal processing techniques or advanced deep learning algorithms to improve prediction performance without fully leveraging the end-to-end advantages of deep learning. The challenge lies in transforming multi-sensor raw data into input data suitable for direct model feeding, all while minimizing data scale and preserving sufficient temporal interpretation of tool wear. However, there is no clear reference standard for this so far. In light of this, this paper innovatively explores the processing methods that transform raw data into input data for deep learning models, a process known as an input paradigm. This paper introduces three new input paradigms: the downsampling paradigm, the periodic paradigm, and the subsequence paradigm. Then an improved hybrid model that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) was employed to validate the model’s performance. The subsequence paradigm demonstrated considerable superiority in prediction results based on the PHM2010 dataset, as the newly generated time series maintained the integrity of the raw data. Further investigation revealed that, with 120 subsequences and the temporal indicator being the maximum value, the model’s mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) were the lowest after threefold cross-validation, outperforming several classical and contemporary methods. The methods explored in this paper provide references for designing input data for deep learning models, helping to enhance the end-to-end potential of deep learning models, and promoting the industrial deployment and practical application of tool condition monitoring systems.

Protein structure prediction is important for understanding their function and behavior. This review study presents a comprehensive review of the computational models used in predicting protein structure. It covers the progression from established protein modeling to state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks. The paper will start with a brief introduction to protein structures, protein modeling, and AI. The section on established protein modeling will discuss homology modeling, ab initio modeling, and threading. The next section is deep learning-based models. It introduces some state-of-the-art AI models, such as AlphaFold (AlphaFold, AlphaFold2, AlphaFold3), RoseTTAFold, ProteinBERT, etc. This section also discusses how AI techniques have been integrated into established frameworks like Swiss-Model, Rosetta, and I-TASSER. The model performance is compared using the rankings of CASP14 (Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction) and CASP15. CASP16 is ongoing, and its results are not included in this review. Continuous Automated Model EvaluatiOn (CAMEO) complements the biennial CASP experiment. Template modeling score (TM-score), global distance test total score (GDT_TS), and Local Distance Difference Test (lDDT) score are discussed too. This paper then acknowledges the ongoing difficulties in predicting protein structure and emphasizes the necessity of additional searches like dynamic protein behavior, conformational changes, and protein–protein interactions. In the application section, this paper introduces some applications in various fields like drug design, industry, education, and novel protein development. In summary, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the latest advancements in established protein modeling and deep learning-based models for protein structure predictions. It emphasizes the significant advancements achieved by AI and identifies potential areas for further investigation.

The potato is a key crop in addressing global hunger, and deep learning is at the core of smart agriculture. Applying deep learning (e.g., YOLO series, ResNet, CNN, LSTM, etc.) in potato production can enhance both yield and economic efficiency. Therefore, researching efficient deep learning models for potato production is of great importance. Common application areas for deep learning in the potato production chain, aimed at improving yield, include pest and disease detection and diagnosis, plant health status monitoring, yield prediction and product quality detection, irrigation strategies, fertilization management, and price forecasting. The main objective of this review is to compile the research progress of deep learning in various processes of potato production and to provide direction for future research. Specifically, this paper categorizes the applications of deep learning in potato production into four types, thereby discussing and introducing the advantages and disadvantages of deep learning in the aforementioned fields, and it discusses future research directions. This paper provides an overview of deep learning and describes its current applications in various stages of the potato production chain.

The rise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has enabled the development of smart cities, intelligent buildings, and advanced industrial ecosystems. When the IoT is matched with machine learning (ML), the advantages of the resulting enhanced environments can span, for example, from energy optimization to security improvement and comfort enhancement. Together, IoT and ML technologies are widely used in smart buildings, in particular, to reduce energy consumption and create Intelligent Energy-Efficient Buildings (IEEBs). In IEEBs, ML models are typically used to analyze and predict various factors such as temperature, humidity, light, occupancy, and human behavior with the aim of optimizing building systems. In the literature, many review papers have been presented so far in the field of IEEBs. Such papers mostly focus on specific subfields of ML or on a limited number of papers. This paper presents a systematic meta-survey, i.e., a review of review articles, that compares the state of the art in the field of IEEBs using the Prisma approach. In more detail, our meta-survey aims to give a broader view, with respect to the already published surveys, of the state-of-the-art in the IEEB field, investigating the use of supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and self-supervised models in a variety of IEEB-based scenarios. Moreover, our paper aims to compare the already published surveys by answering five important research questions about IEEB definitions, architectures, methods/models used, datasets and real implementations utilized, and main challenges/research directions defined. This meta-survey provides insights that are useful both for newcomers to the field and for researchers who want to learn more about the methodologies and technologies used for IEEBs’ design and implementation.

Bufferbloat is one of the leading causes of high data transmission latency and jitter on the Internet, which severely impacts the performance of low-latency interactive applications such as online streaming, cloud-based gaming/applications, Internet of Things (IoT) applications, voice over IP (VoIP), real-time video conferencing, and so forth. There is currently a pressing need for developing Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) congestion control algorithms and bottleneck queue management schemes that can collaboratively control/reduce end-to-end latency, thus ensuring optimal quality of service (QoS) and quality of experience (QoE) for users. This paper introduces a novel solution by experimentally integrate the low latency, low loss, and scalable throughput (L4S) architecture (specified by the IETF in RFC 9330) in FreeBSD framework with the asynchronous advantage actor-critic (A3C) reinforcement learning algorithm. The first phase involves incorporating a modified dual-queue coupled active queue management (AQM) system for L4S into the FreeBSD networking stack, enhancing queue management and mitigating latency and packet loss. The second phase employs A3C to adjust and fine-tune the system performance dynamically. Finally, we evaluate the proposed solution’s effectiveness through comprehensive experiments, comparing it with traditional AQM-based systems. This paper contributes to the advancement of machine learning (ML) for transport protocol research in the field. The experimental implementation and results presented in this paper are made available through our GitHub repositories.

This paper addresses the significant problem of identifying the relevant background and contextual literature related to deep learning (DL) as an evolving technology in order to provide a comprehensive analysis of the application of DL to the specific problem of pneumonia detection via chest X-ray (CXR) imaging, which is the most common and cost-effective imaging technique available worldwide for pneumonia diagnosis. This paper in particular addresses the key period associated with COVID-19, 2020–2023, to explain, analyze, and systematically evaluate the limitations of approaches and determine their relative levels of effectiveness. The context in which DL is applied as both an aid to and an automated substitute for existing expert radiography professionals, who often have limited availability, is elaborated in detail. The rationale for the undertaken research is provided, along with a justification of the resources adopted and their relevance. This explanatory text and the subsequent analyses are intended to provide sufficient detail of the problem being addressed, existing solutions, and the limitations of these, ranging in detail from the specific to the more general. Indeed, our analysis and evaluation agree with the generally held view that the use of transformers, specifically, vision transformers (ViTs), is the most promising technique for obtaining further effective results in the area of pneumonia detection using CXR images. However, ViTs require extensive further research to address several limitations, specifically the following: biased CXR datasets, data and code availability, the ease with which a model can be explained, systematic methods of accurate model comparison, the notion of class imbalance in CXR datasets, and the possibility of adversarial attacks, the latter of which remains an area of fundamental research.

The accurate distribution of joints on the tunnel face is crucial for assessing the stability and safety of surrounding rock during tunnel construction. This paper introduces the Mask R-CNN image segmentation algorithm, a state-of-the-art deep learning model, to achieve efficient and accurate identification and extraction of joints on tunnel face images. First, digital images of tunnel faces were captured and stitched, resulting in 286 complete images suitable for analysis. Then, the joints on the tunnel face were extracted using traditional image processing algorithms, the commonly used U-net image segmentation model, and the Mask R-CNN image segmentation model introduced in this paper to address the lack of recognition accuracy. Finally, the extraction results obtained by the three methods were compared. The comparison results show that the joint extraction method based on the Mask R-CNN image segmentation deep learning model introduced in this paper achieved the best joint extraction effect with a Dice similarity coefficient of 87.48%, outperforming traditional methods and the U-net model, which scored 60.59% and 75.36%, respectively, realizing accurate and efficient acquisition of tunnel face rock joints. These findings suggest that the Mask R-CNN model can be effectively implemented in real-time monitoring systems for tunnel construction projects.

Cables are vital load-bearing components of cable-stayed bridges. Surface defects can lead to internal corrosion and fracturing, significantly impacting the stability of the bridge structure. The detection of surface defects from bridge cable images faces numerous challenges, including shadow disturbances due to uneven lighting and difficulties in addressing multiscale defect features. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel and cost-effective deep learning segmentation network, named Trans-DCN, to detect defects in the surface of the bridge cable. The network leverages an efficient Transformer-based encoder and integrates multiscale features to overcome the limitations associated with local feature inadequacy. The decoder implements an atrous Deformable Convolution (DCN) pyramid and dynamically fuses low-level feature information to perceive the complex distribution of defects. The effectiveness of Trans-DCN is evaluated by comparing it with state-of-the-art segmentation baseline models using a dataset comprising cable bridge defect images. Experimental results demonstrate that our network outperforms the state-of-the-art network SegFormer, achieving a 27.1% reduction in GFLOPs, a 1.2% increase in mean Intersection over Union, and a 1.5% increase in the F1 score. Ablation experiments confirmed the effectiveness of each module within our network, further substantiating the significant validity and advantages of Trans-DCN in the task of bridge cable defect segmentation. The network proposed in this paper provides an effective solution for downstream cable bridge image analysis.

Understanding road conditions is essential for implementing effective road safety measures and driving solutions. Road situations encompass the day-to-day conditions of roads, including the presence of vehicles and pedestrians. Surveillance cameras strategically placed along streets have been instrumental in monitoring road situations and providing valuable information on pedestrians, moving vehicles, and objects within road environments. However, these video data and information are stored in large volumes, making analysis tedious and time-consuming. Deep learning models are increasingly utilized to monitor vehicles and identify and evaluate road and driving comfort situations. However, the current neural network model requires the recognition of situations using time-series video data. In this paper, we introduced a multi-directional detection model for road situations to uphold high accuracy. Deep learning methods often integrate long short-term memory (LSTM) into long-term recurrent network architectures. This approach effectively combines recurrent neural networks to capture temporal dependencies and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to extract features from extensive video data. In our proposed method, we form a multi-directional long-term recurrent convolutional network approach with two groups equipped with CNN and two layers of LSTM. Additionally, we compare road situation recognition using convolutional neural networks, long short-term networks, and long-term recurrent convolutional networks. The paper presents a method for detecting and recognizing multi-directional road contexts using a modified LRCN. After balancing the dataset through data augmentation, the number of video files increased, resulting in our model achieving 91% accuracy, a significant improvement from the original dataset.

Signal processing is a very useful field of study in the interpretation of signals in many everyday applications. In the case of applications with time-varying signals, one possibility is to consider them as graphs, so graph theory arises, which extends classical methods to the non-Euclidean domain. In addition, machine learning techniques have been widely used in pattern recognition activities in a wide variety of tasks, including health sciences. The objective of this work is to identify and analyze the papers in the literature that address the use of machine learning applied to graph signal processing in health sciences. A search was performed in four databases (Science Direct, IEEE Xplore, ACM, and MDPI), using search strings to identify papers that are in the scope of this review. Finally, 45 papers were included in the analysis, the first being published in 2015, which indicates an emerging area. Among the gaps found, we can mention the need for better clinical interpretability of the results obtained in the papers, that is not to restrict the results or conclusions simply to performance metrics. In addition, a possible research direction is the use of new transforms. It is also important to make new public datasets available that can be used to train the models.

Brain stroke, or a cerebrovascular accident, is a devastating medical condition that disrupts the blood supply to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Each year, according to the World Health Organization, 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke. This results in approximately 5 million deaths and another 5 million individuals suffering permanent disabilities. The complex interplay of various risk factors highlights the urgent need for sophisticated analytical methods to more accurately predict stroke risks and manage their outcomes. Machine learning and deep learning technologies offer promising solutions by analyzing extensive datasets including patient demographics, health records, and lifestyle choices to uncover patterns and predictors not easily discernible by humans. These technologies enable advanced data processing, analysis, and fusion techniques for a comprehensive health assessment. We conducted a comprehensive review of 25 review papers published between 2020 and 2024 on machine learning and deep learning applications in brain stroke diagnosis, focusing on classification, segmentation, and object detection. Furthermore, all these reviews explore the performance evaluation and validation of advanced sensor systems in these areas, enhancing predictive health monitoring and personalized care recommendations. Moreover, we also provide a collection of the most relevant datasets used in brain stroke analysis. The selection of the papers was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Furthermore, this review critically examines each domain, identifies current challenges, and proposes future research directions, emphasizing the potential of AI methods in transforming health monitoring and patient care.

The paper “Using Absorption Models for Insulin and Carbohydrates and Deep Leaning to Improve Glucose Level Predictions” (Sensors 2021, 21, 5273) proposes a novel approach to predicting blood glucose levels for people with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). By building exponential models from raw carbohydrate and insulin data to simulate the absorption in the body, the authors reported a reduction in their model’s root-mean-square error (RMSE) from 15.5 mg/dL (raw) to 9.2 mg/dL (exponential) when predicting blood glucose levels one hour into the future. In this comment, we demonstrate that the experimental techniques used in that paper are flawed, which invalidates its results and conclusions. Specifically, after reviewing the authors’ code, we found that the model validation scheme was malformed, namely, the training and test data from the same time intervals were mixed. This means that the reported RMSE numbers in the referenced paper did not accurately measure the predictive capabilities of the approaches that were presented. We repaired the measurement technique by appropriately isolating the training and test data, and we discovered that their models actually performed dramatically worse than was reported in the paper. In fact, the models presented in the that paper do not appear to perform any better than a naive model that predicts future glucose levels to be the same as the current ones.

LoRa enables long-range communication for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, especially those with limited resources and low power requirements. Consequently, LoRa has emerged as a popular choice for numerous IoT applications. However, the security of LoRa devices is one of the major concerns that requires attention. Existing device identification mechanisms use cryptography which has two major issues: (1) cryptography is hard on the device resources and (2) physical attacks might prevent them from being effective. Deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification (RFFI) is emerging as a key candidate for device identification using hardware-intrinsic features. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of the state of the art in the area of deep learning-based radio frequency fingerprinting identification for LoRa devices. We discuss various categories of radio frequency fingerprinting techniques along with hardware imperfections that can be exploited to identify an emitter. Furthermore, we describe different deep learning algorithms implemented for the task of LoRa device classification and summarize the main approaches and results. We discuss several representations of the LoRa signal used as input to deep learning models. Additionally, we provide a thorough review of all the LoRa RF signal datasets used in the literature and summarize details about the hardware used, the type of signals collected, the features provided, availability, and size. Finally, we conclude this paper by discussing the existing challenges in deep learning-based LoRa device identification and also envisage future research directions and opportunities.

Estimating precipitation is of critical importance to climate systems and decision-making processes. This paper presents Espresso, a deep learning model designed for estimating precipitation from satellite observations on a global scale. Conventional methods, like ground-based radars, are limited in terms of spatial coverage. Satellite observations, on the other hand, allow global coverage. Combined with deep learning methods, these observations offer the opportunity to address the challenge of estimating precipitation on a global scale. This research paper presents the development of a deep learning model using geostationary satellite data as input and generating instantaneous rainfall rates, calibrated using data from the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory (GPMCO). The performance impact of various input data configurations on Espresso was investigated. These configurations include a sequence of four images from geostationary satellites and the optimal selection of channels. Additional descriptive features were explored to enhance the model’s robustness for global applications. When evaluated against the GPMCO test set, Espresso demonstrated highly accurate precipitation estimation, especially within equatorial regions. A comparison against six other operational products using multiple metrics indicated its competitive performance. The model’s superior storm localization and intensity estimation were further confirmed through visual comparisons in case studies. Espresso has been incorporated as an operational product at Météo-France, delivering high-quality, real-time global precipitation estimates every 30 min.

Current stomach disease detection and diagnosis is challenged by data complexity and high dimensionality and requires effective deep learning algorithms to improve diagnostic accuracy. To address this challenge, in this paper, an improved strategy based on the Adam algorithm is proposed, which aims to alleviate the influence of local optimal solutions, overfitting, and slow convergence rates by controlling the restart strategy and the gradient norm joint clipping technique. This improved algorithm is abbreviated as the CG-Adam algorithm. The control restart strategy performs a restart operation by periodically checking the number of steps and once the number of steps reaches a preset restart period. After the restart is completed, the algorithm will restart the optimization process. It helps the algorithm avoid falling into the local optimum and maintain convergence stability. Meanwhile, gradient norm joint clipping combines both gradient clipping and norm clipping techniques, which can avoid gradient explosion and gradient vanishing problems and help accelerate the convergence of the optimization process by restricting the gradient and norm to a suitable range. In order to verify the effectiveness of the CG-Adam algorithm, experimental validation is carried out on the MNIST, CIFAR10, and Stomach datasets and compared with the Adam algorithm as well as the current popular optimization algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved algorithm proposed in this paper achieves an accuracy of 98.59%, 70.7%, and 73.2% on the MNIST, CIFAR10, and Stomach datasets, respectively, surpassing the Adam algorithm. The experimental results not only prove the significant effect of the CG-Adam algorithm in accelerating the model convergence and improving generalization performance but also demonstrate its wide potential and practical application value in the field of medical image recognition.

In order to accurately predict the hazardous degree of rockbursts, this paper proposes eight new classification models for predicting the intensity level of rockbursts based on intelligent optimisation algorithms and deep learning techniques and collects 287 sets of real rockburst data to form a sample database, in which six quantitative indicators are selected as feature parameters. In order to validate the effectiveness of the constructed eight machine learning prediction models, the study selected Accuracy, Precision, Recall and F1 Score to evaluate the prediction performance of each model. The results show that the NGO-CNN-BiGRU-Attention model has the best prediction performance, with an accuracy of 0.98. Subsequently, engineering validation of the model is carried out using eight sets of real rockburst data from Daxiangling Tunnel, and the results show that the model has a strong generalisation ability and can satisfy the relevant engineering applications. In addition, this paper also uses SHAP technology to quantify the impact of different factors on the rockburst intensity level and found that the elastic strain energy index and stress ratio have the greatest impact on the rockburst intensity level.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based object detection methods are widely used in traffic detection due to their high flexibility and extensive coverage. In recent years, with the increasing complexity of the urban road environment, UAV object detection algorithms based on deep learning have gradually become a research hotspot. However, how to further improve algorithmic efficiency in response to the numerous and rapidly changing road elements, and thus achieve high-speed and accurate road object detection, remains a challenging issue. Given this context, this paper proposes the high-efficiency multi-object detection algorithm for UAVs (HeMoDU). HeMoDU reconstructs a state-of-the-art, deep-learning-based object detection model and optimizes several aspects to improve computational efficiency and detection accuracy. To validate the performance of HeMoDU in urban road environments, this paper uses the public urban road datasets VisDrone2019 and UA-DETRAC for evaluation. The experimental results show that the HeMoDU model effectively improves the speed and accuracy of UAV object detection.

Fast and accurate counting and positioning of flowers is the foundation of automated flower cultivation production. However, it remains a challenge to complete the counting and positioning of high-density flowers against a complex background. Therefore, this paper proposes a lightweight flower counting and positioning model, Light-FC-YOLO, based on YOLOv8s. By integrating lightweight convolution, the model is more portable and deployable. At the same time, a new efficient detection head, Efficient head, and the integration of the LSKA large kernel attention mechanism are proposed to enhance the model’s feature detail extraction capability and change the weight ratio of the shallow edge and key point information in the network. Finally, the SIoU loss function with target angle deviation calculation is introduced to improve the model’s detection accuracy and target positioning ability. Experimental results show that Light-FC-YOLO, with a model size reduction of 27.2% and a parameter reduction of 39.0%, has a Mean Average Precision (mAP) and recall that are 0.8% and 1.4% higher than YOLOv8s, respectively. In the counting comparison experiment, the coefficient of determination (R2) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) of Light-FC-YOLO reached 0.9577 and 8.69, respectively, both superior to lightweight models such as YOLOv8s. The lightweight flower detection method proposed in this paper can efficiently complete flower positioning and counting tasks, providing technical support and reference solutions for automated flower production management.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of premature death and disability globally, leading to significant increases in healthcare costs and economic strains. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a crucial technology in this context, promising to have a significant impact on the management of CVDs. A wide range of methods can be used to develop effective models for medical applications, encompassing everything from predicting and diagnosing diseases to determining the most suitable treatment for individual patients. This literature review synthesizes findings from multiple studies that apply AI technologies such as machine learning algorithms and neural networks to electrocardiograms, echocardiography, coronary angiography, computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. A narrative review of 127 articles identified 31 papers that were directly relevant to the research, encompassing a broad spectrum of AI applications in cardiology. These applications included AI models for ECG, echocardiography, coronary angiography, computed tomography, and cardiac MRI aimed at diagnosing various cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, pulmonary embolism, and valvulopathies. The papers also explored new methods for cardiovascular risk assessment, automated measurements, and optimizing treatment strategies, demonstrating the benefits of AI technologies in cardiology. In conclusion, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in cardiology promises substantial advancements in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases.

Nowadays, accurate and efficient short-term traffic flow forecasting plays a critical role in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, due to the fact that traffic flow is susceptible to factors such as weather and road conditions, traffic flow data tend to exhibit dynamic uncertainty and nonlinearity, making the construction of a robust and reliable forecasting model still a challenging task. Aiming at this nonlinear and complex traffic flow forecasting problem, this paper constructs a short-term traffic flow forecasting hybrid optimization model, SSA-ELM, based on extreme learning machine by embedding the sparrow search algorithm in order to solve the above problem. Extreme learning machine has been widely used in short-term traffic flow forecasting due to its characteristics such as low computational complexity and fast learning speed. By using the sparrow search algorithm to optimize the input weight values and hidden layer deviations in the extreme learning machine, the sparrow search algorithm is utilized to search for the global optimal solution while taking into account the original characteristics of the extreme learning machine, so that the model improves stability while increasing prediction accuracy. Experimental results on the Amsterdam A10 road traffic flow dataset show that the traffic flow forecasting model proposed in this paper has higher forecasting accuracy and stability, revealing the potential of hybrid optimization models in the field of short-term traffic flow forecasting.

Recent advancements in deep learning have spurred the development of numerous novel semantic segmentation models for land cover mapping, showcasing exceptional performance in delineating precise boundaries and producing highly accurate land cover maps. However, to date, no systematic literature review has comprehensively examined semantic segmentation models in the context of land cover mapping. This paper addresses this gap by synthesizing recent advancements in semantic segmentation models for land cover mapping from 2017 to 2023, drawing insights on trends, data sources, model structures, and performance metrics based on a review of 106 articles. Our analysis identifies top journals in the field, including MDPI Remote Sensing, IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Earth Science, and IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, and ISPRS Journal Of Photogrammetry And Remote Sensing. We find that research predominantly focuses on land cover, urban areas, precision agriculture, environment, coastal areas, and forests. Geographically, 35.29% of the study areas are located in China, followed by the USA (11.76%), France (5.88%), Spain (4%), and others. Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, and Landsat satellites emerge as the most used data sources. Benchmark datasets such as ISPRS Vaihingen and Potsdam, LandCover.ai, DeepGlobe, and GID datasets are frequently employed. Model architectures predominantly utilize encoder–decoder and hybrid convolutional neural network-based structures because of their impressive performances, with limited adoption of transformer-based architectures due to its computational complexity issue and slow convergence speed. Lastly, this paper highlights existing key research gaps in the field to guide future research directions.
