This paper considers the issues of image fusion in a spatially distributed small-size on-board location system for operational monitoring. The purpose of this research is to develop a new method for the formation of fused images of the land surface based on data obtained from optical and radar devices operated from two-position spatially distributed systems of small aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles. The advantages of the method for integrating information from radar and optical information-measuring systems are justified. The combined approach allows removing the limitations of each separate system. The practicality of choosing the integration of information from several widely used variants of heterogeneous sources is shown. An iterative approach is used in the method for combining multi-angle location images. This approach improves the quality of synthesis and increases the accuracy of integration, as well as improves the information content and reliability of the final fused image by using the pixel clustering algorithm, which produces many partitions into clusters. The search for reference points on isolated contours is carried out on a pair of left and right images of the docked image from the selected partition. For these reference points, a functional transformation is determined. Having applied it to the original multi-angle heterogeneous images, the degree of correlation of the fused image is assessed. Both the position of the reference points of the contour and the desired functional transformation itself are refined until the quality assessment of the fusion becomes acceptable. The type of functional transformation is selected based on clustered images and then applied to the original multi-angle heterogeneous images. This process is repeated for clustered images with greater granularity in case if quality assessment of the fusion is considered to be poor. At each iteration, there is a search for pairs of points of the contour of the isolated areas. Areas are isolated with the use of two image segmentation methods. Experiments on the formation of fused images are presented. The result of the research is the proposed method for integrating information obtained from a two-position airborne small-sized radar system and an optical location system. The implemented method can improve the information content, quality, and reliability of the finally established fused image of the land surface.

This research examines the potential of digital twin (DT) technology for reformation within China's traditional solid-wood-panel processing industry, which currently suffers from production inefficiencies and the slow adoption of digital technology. The research centers around developing a digital twin system, elucidating improvements in manufacturing efficiency, waste management, process simulation, and real-time monitoring. These capabilities facilitate immediate problem solving and offer transparency in the process. The digital twin system is comprised of physical, transport, virtual, and application layers, employing a MySQL database and using the Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) protocol for communication. The application of this system has led to heightened production efficiency and better material use in the solid-wood-panel manufacturing line. Integrating the dynamic selection adaptive genetic algorithm (DSAGA) into the virtual layer drives the system's efficiency forward. This evolved approach has allowed for an enhancement of 8.93% in the scheduling efficiency of DSAGA compared to traditional genetic algorithms (GAs), thereby contributing to increased system productivity. Real-time mapping and an advanced simulation interface have strengthened the system's monitoring aspect. These additions enrich data visualization, leading to better comprehension and a holistic process view. This research has ignited improvements in solid-wood-panel production, illustrating the tangible benefits and representing progress in incorporating digital technology into traditional industries. This research sets a path for transforming these industries into smart manufacturing by effectively bridging the gap between physical production and digital monitoring. In this work, we aim to evaluate the feasibility and operational limitations of using Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to monitor water levels in the Poço da Cruz reservoir from September 2016–September 2020, in the semi-arid region of northeast Brazil. To segment water/non-water features, SAR backscattering thresholding was carried out via the graphical interpretation of backscatter coefficient histograms. In addition, surrounding environmental effects on SAR polarization thresholds were investigated by applying wavelet analysis, and the Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 normalized difference water index (NDWI) and modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) were used to compare and discuss the SAR results. The assessment of the observed and estimated water levels showed that (i) SAR accuracy was equivalent to that of NDWI/Landsat-8; (ii) optical image accuracy outperformed SAR image accuracy in inlet branches, where the complexity of water features is higher; and (iii) VV polarization outperformed VH polarization. The results confirm that SAR images can be suitable for operational reservoir monitoring, offering a similar accuracy to that of multispectral indices. SAR threshold variations were strongly correlated to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the soil moisture variations in the reservoir depletion zone, and the prior precipitation quantities, which can be used as a proxy to predict cross-polarization (VH) and co-polarization (VV) thresholds. Our findings may improve the accuracy of the algorithms designed to automate the extraction of water levels using SAR data, either in isolation or combined with multispectral images. The triangle method has been applied to derive a weekly indicator of evaporative fraction on vegetated areas in a temperate region in Northern Italy. Daily MODIS Aqua Land Surface Temperature (MYD11A1) data has been combined with air temperature maps and 8-day composite MODIS NDVI (MOD13Q1/MYD13Q1) data to estimate the Evaporative Fraction ( EF ) at 1 km resolution, on a daily basis. Measurements at two eddy covariance towers located within the study area have been exploited to assess the reliability of satellite based EF estimations as well as the robustness of input data. Weekly syntheses of the daily EF indicator ( EF w ) were then derived at regional scale for the years 2010, 2011 and 2012 as a proxy of overall surface moisture condition. EF w showed a temporal behavior consistent with growing cycles and agro-practices of the main crops cultivated in the study area (rice, forages and corn). Comparison with official regional corn yield data showed that variations in EF w cumulated over summer are related with crop production shortages induced by water scarcity. These results suggest that weekly-averaged EF estimated from MODIS data is sensible to water stress conditions and can be used as an indicator of crops' moisture conditions at agronomical district level. This manuscript describes methods for evaluating the efficacy of five satellite-based Chlorophyll-a algorithms in Chesapeake Bay, spanning three separate sensors: Ocean Land Color Imager (OLCI), Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), and MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS). The algorithms were compared using in situ Chlorophyll-a measurements from 38 separate stations, provided through the Chesapeake Bay Program (CBP). These stations span nearly the entire 300 km length of the optically complex Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States. Overall accuracy was examined for the entire dataset, in addition to assessing the differences related to the distance from the turbidity maximum to the north by grouping the results into the upper bay, middle bay, or lower bay. The mean bias and the Mean Absolute Error (MAE) as well as the median bias and Median Absolute Error (MedAE) were conducted for comparison. A two-band algorithm, that is based on the red-edge portion of the electromagnetic spectrum (RE10), when applied to OLCI imagery, exhibited the lowest overall MedAE of 36% at all stations. As a result, it is recommended that the RE10 algorithm be applied to OLCI and provided as an operational product through NOAA's CoastWatch program. Desert locust swarms intermittently damage crops and pastures in sixty countries from Africa to western Asia, threatening the food security of 10% of the world's population. During the 20th century, desert locust control operations began organizing, and nowadays, they are coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which promotes a preventative strategy based on early warning and rapid response. This strategy implies a constant monitoring of the populations and of the ecological conditions favorable to their development. Satellite remote sensing can provide a near real-time monitoring of these conditions at the continental scale. Thus, the desert locust control community needs a reliable detection of green vegetation in arid and semi-arid areas as an indicator of potential desert locust habitat. To meet this need, a colorimetric transformation has been developed on both SPOT-VEGETATION and MODIS data to produce dynamic greenness maps. After their integration in the daily locust control activities, this research aimed at assessing those dynamic greenness maps from the producers' and the users' points of view. Eight confusion matrices and Pareto boundaries were derived from high resolution reference maps representative of the temporal and spatial diversity of Mauritanian habitats. The dynamic greenness maps were found to be accurate in summer breeding areas (F-score = 0.64-0.87), but accuracy dropped in winter breeding areas (F-score = 0.28-0.40). Accuracy is related to landscape fragmentation (R² = 0.9): the current spatial resolution remains too coarse to resolve complex fragmented patterns and accounts for a substantial (60%) part of the error. The exploitation of PROBA-V 100-m images at the finest resolution (100-m) would enhance by 20% the vegetation detection in fragmented habitat. A survey revealed that end-users are satisfied with the product and find it fit for monitoring, thanks to an intuitive interpretation, leading to more efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many remote sensing applications are devoted to the agricultural sector. Representative case studies are presented in the special issue "Advances in Remote Sensing of Agriculture". To complement the examples published within the special issue, a few main applications with regional to global focus were selected for this review, where remote sensing contributions are traditionally strong. The selected applications are put in the context of the global challenges the agricultural sector is facing: minimizing the environmental impact, while increasing production and productivity. Five different applications have been selected, which are illustrated and described: (1) biomass and yield estimation, (2) vegetation vigor and drought stress monitoring, (3) assessment of crop phenological development, (4) crop acreage estimation and cropland mapping and (5) mapping of disturbances and land use/land cover (LULC) changes. Many other applications exist, such as precision agriculture and irrigation management (see other special issues of this journal), but were not included to keep the paper concise. The paper starts with an overview of the main agricultural challenges. This section is followed by a brief overview of existing operational monitoring systems. In flood-prone areas, the delineation of the spatial pattern of historical flood extents, damage assessment, and flood durations allow planners to anticipate potential threats from floods and to formulate strategies to mitigate or abate these events. The Chenab plain in the Punjab region of Pakistan is particularly prone to flooding but is understudied. It experienced its worst riverine flood in recorded history in September 2014. The present study applies Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) techniques to estimate the riverine flood extent and duration and assess the resulting damage using Landsat-8 data. The Landsat-8 images were acquired for the pre-flooding, co-flooding, and post-flooding periods for the comprehensive analysis and delineation of flood extent, damage assessment, and duration. We used supervised classification to determine land use/cover changes, and the satellite-derived modified normalized difference water index (MNDWI) to detect flooded areas and duration. The analysis permitted us to calculate flood inundation, damages to built-up areas, and agriculture, as well as the flood duration and recession. The results also reveal that the floodwaters remained in the study area for almost two months, which further affected cultivation and increased the financial cost. Our study provides an empirical basis for flood response assessment and rehabilitation efforts in future events. Over the last decade, West African coastal countries, including Ghana, have experienced extensive economic damage due to illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activity, estimated at about USD 100 million in losses each year. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing poses an enormous threat to the conservation and management of the dwindling fish stocks, causing multiple adverse consequences for fisheries, coastal and marine ecosystems and for the people who depend on these resources. The Integrated System for Surveillance of Illegal, Unlicensed and Unreported Fishing (INSURE) is an efficient and inexpensive system that has been developed for the monitoring of IUU fishing in Ghanaian waters. It makes use of fast-delivery Earth observation data from the synthetic aperture radar instrument on Sentinel-1 and the Multi Spectral Imager on Sentinel-2, detecting objects that differ markedly from their immediate background using a constant false alarm rate test. Detections are matched to, and verified by, Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, which provide the location and dimensions of ships that are legally operating in the region. Matched and unmatched data are then displayed on a web portal for use by coastal management authorities in Ghana. The system has a detection success rate of 91% for AIS-registered vessels, and a fast throughput, processing and delivering information within 2 h of acquiring the satellite overpass. However, over the 17-month analysis period, 75% of SAR detections have no equivalent in the AIS record, suggesting significant unregulated marine activity, including vessels potentially involved in IUU. The INSURE system demonstrated its efficiency in Ghana's exclusive economic zone and it can be extended to the neighbouring states in the Gulf of Guinea, or other geographical regions that need to improve fisheries surveillance. Reservoir construction and land use change are altering sediment transport within river systems at a global scale. Changes in sediment transport can impact river morphology, aquatic ecosystems, and ultimately the growth and retreat of delta environments. The Lower Mekong Basin is crucial to five neighboring countries for transportation, energy production, sustainable water supply, and food production. In response, countries have coordinated to develop programs for regional scale water quality monitoring that including surface sediment concentrations (SSSC); however, these programs are based on a limited number of point measurements and due to resource limitations, cannot provide comprehensive insights into sediment transport across all strategic locations within the Lower Mekong Basin. To augment in situ SSSC data from the current monitoring program, we developed an empirical model to estimate SSSC across the Lower Mekong Basin from Landsat observations. Model validation revealed that remotely sensed SSSC estimates captured the spatial and temporal dynamics in a range of aquatic environments (main stem of Mekong river, tributary systems, Mekong Floodplain, and reservoirs) while, on average, slightly underestimating SSSC by about 2 mg·L − 1 across all settings. The operational SSSC model was developed and implemented using Google Earth Engine and Google App Engine was used to host an online application that allows users, without any knowledge of remote sensing, to access SSSC data across the region. Expanded access to SSSC data should be particularly helpful for resource managers and other stakeholders seeking to understand the dynamics between surface sediment concentrations and land use conversions, water policy, and energy production in a globally strategic region. This study presents an approach to forest canopy disturbance monitoring in evergreen forests in continental Southeast Asia, based on temporal differences of a modified normalized burn ratio (NBR) vegetation index. We generate NBR values from each available Landsat 8 scene of a given period. A step of ‘self-referencing’ normalizes the NBR values, largely eliminating illumination/topography effects, thus maximizing inter-comparability. We then create yearly composites of these self-referenced NBR (rNBR) values, selecting per pixel the maximum rNBR value over each observation period, which reflects the most open canopy cover condition of that pixel. The ΔrNBR is generated as the difference between the composites of two reference periods. The methodology produces seamless and consistent maps, highlighting patterns of canopy disturbances (e.g., encroachment, selective logging), and keeping artifacts at minimum level. The monitoring approach was validated within four test sites with an overall accuracy of almost 78% using very high resolution satellite reference imagery. The methodology was implemented in a Google Earth Engine (GEE) script requiring no user interaction. A threshold is applied to the final output dataset in order to separate signal from noise. The approach, capable of detecting sub-pixel disturbance events as small as 0.005 ha, is transparent and reproducible, and can help to increase the credibility of monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), as required in the context of reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+). Time series analysis is a method of key importance for systems of various hierarchies' economic security studies. This article's main goal is to develop an economic security rapid indicators system, introducing threshold values and utilizing indices with a one-month sampling period, and its approbation during Russia's economic security operational monitoring. In order to develop such a system, the authors accumulated economic security world experience including reliability, visibility and tree structure principles. The authors' monitoring system includes four spheres: real economy, social, monetary and foreign economic, each of which contains three indicators. In order to organize economic security monitoring, it is proposed to use the index method, which converts indicators into a dimensionless form with integral values in subsequent calculations. Based on integral indices values, the economic security generalized index is synthesized, which can be used to analyze a system's development trends. We present economic security normalized indicators and integral indices dynamics for the years 2020–2022, which show two crises dynamics. The first is due the COVID-19 pandemic, while the second is associated with economic sanctions against Russia, implemented in 2022. The proposed economic security operational monitoring indicators system can be used effectively in the government's practical tasks in order to ensure the required level of economic security. Evaluating the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their impact on receiving surface water bodies is a complex and highly significant task due to its regulatory implications for both environmental and public health. The monitoring of many water quality parameters related to the compliance of treated wastewater with environmental standards has led to the development of a unitless metric, the Wastewater Quality Index (WWQI), which serves as a practical tool for regulatory authorities. The aim of this research is to propose an appropriate WWQI methodology, incorporating a set of water quality indicators and a weighting approach, to evaluate wastewater effluents under operational monitoring. In this study, WWQI was successfully applied to access the operation of 21 WWTPs' effluents within a single monitoring campaign, outside the mandatory monitoring schemes. The WWQI was computed for physical-chemical parameters including chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total suspended solids (TSS), electrical conductivity (EC) and pH, priority substances (Cd, Ni and Pb) and a specific contaminant (Cr) using the weighted approach in the WWQI calculation, based on equal weighting, expert judgement and PCA weighing using factor loadings. The three approaches give similar results for the calculated WWQI. The expert judgment approach is more suitable for evaluating WWTP performance during a single monitoring campaign due to its simplicity compared to the PCA-based approach and its ability to prioritize specific water quality parameters over an equal weightage method. The seepage characteristics of clay core walls are crucial for the seepage safety of core rockfill dams, with the permeability coefficient in the unsaturated zone being nonlinear. To accurately determine the unsaturated seepage parameters in clay core rockfill dams, this paper first proposes an enhanced reptile search algorithm (ERSA) by applying three improvement strategies: Arnold's cat chaotic map, nonlinear evolutionary factor, and adaptive Cauchy–Gaussian mutation with variable weight. Then, by integrating the ERSA with the unsaturated seepage finite element method, an inverse modeling approach is developed. This approach is applied to an actual rockfill dam with operational monitoring data to determine the unsaturated seepage parameters of the clay core. Results indicate that the ERSA outperforms the original RSA in test functions, and the calculation results of the seepage parameters determined through inversion are consistent with the monitoring data, showing an overall mean absolute error of 1.086 m. The inverse modeling approach provides a valuable reference for determining unsaturated seepage parameters in similar clay core rockfill dams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a framework that integrates digital twin and virtual reality (VR) technologies to improve the efficiency and safety of human–robot collaborative systems in the disassembly domain. With the increasing complexity of the handling of end-of-life electronic products and as the related disassembly tasks are characterized by variabilities such as rust, deformation, and diverse part geometries, traditional industrial robots face significant challenges in this domain. These challenges require adaptable and flexible automation solutions that can work safely alongside human workers. We developed an architecture to address these challenges and support system configuration, training, and operational monitoring. Our framework incorporates a digital twin to provide a real-time virtual representation of the physical disassembly process, allowing for immediate feedback and dynamic adjustment of operations. In addition, VR is used to simulate and optimize the workspace layout, improve human–robot interaction, and facilitate safe and effective training scenarios without the need for physical prototypes. A unique case study is presented, where the collaborative system is specifically applied to the disassembly of antenna amplifiers, illustrating the potential of our comprehensive approach to facilitate engineering processes and enhance collaborative safety. Motor fault diagnosis is an important task in the operational monitoring of electrical machines in manufacturing. This study proposes an effective bearing fault diagnosis model for electrical machinery based on machine learning techniques. The proposed model is a combination of three processes: feature extraction of signals collected from the motor based on multi-resolution analysis, fast Fourier transform, and envelope analysis. Next, redundant or irrelevant features are removed using the feature selection technique. A binary salps swarm algorithm combined with an extended repository is the proposed method to remove unnecessary features. As a result, an optimal feature subset is obtained to improve the performance of the classification model. Finally, two classifiers, k-nearest neighbor and support vector machine, are used to classify the fault of the electric motor. There are four input datasets used to evaluate the model performance, and UCI is the benchmark dataset to verify the effectiveness of the proposed feature selection technique. The remaining three datasets include the bearing dataset collected from experiments, with an average classification accuracy of 99.9%, as well as Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) and Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT), which are public datasets with average classification accuracies of 99.6% and 98.98%, respectively. The subsea control system, a pivotal element of the subsea production system, plays an essential role in collecting production data and real-time operational monitoring, crucial for the consistent and stable output of offshore oil and gas fields. The increasing demand for secure offshore oil and gas extraction underscores the necessity for advanced reliability modeling and effective maintenance strategies for subsea control systems. Given the enhanced reliability of subsea equipment due to technological advancements, resulting in scarce failure data, traditional reliability modeling methods reliant on historical failure data are becoming inadequate. This paper proposes an innovative reliability modeling technique for subsea control systems that integrates a Wiener degradation model affected by random shocks and utilizes the Copula function to compute the joint reliability of components and their backups. This approach considers the unique challenges of the subsea environment and the complex interplay between components under variable loads, improving model accuracy. This study also examines the effects of imperfect maintenance on degradation paths and introduces a holistic lifecycle cost model for preventive maintenance (PM), optimized against reliability and economic considerations. Generating accurate monthly estimations of water level fluctuations in reservoirs and lakes is crucial for supporting effective water resource management and protection. The dual-satellite configuration of Sentinel-3 makes it possible to monitor water level changes with great coverage and short time intervals. However, the potential of Sentinel-3's Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimetry (SRAL) data to enable operational monitoring of water levels across Jiangsu Province on a monthly basis has not yet been fully explored. This study demonstrated and validated the use of Sentinel-3's SRAL to generate accurate monthly water level estimations needed to inform water management strategies. The monthly water levels of lakes and reservoirs from 2017 to 2021 were produced using Sentinel-3 level-2 land products. Results showed that, compared with in situ data across eight studied lakes, all lakes presented R (Pearson correlation coefficient) values greater than 0.5 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) values less than 1 m. Notably, water level estimates for Tai Lake, Gaoyou Lake, and Luoma Lake were particularly accurate, with R above 0.9 and RMSE below 0.5 m. Furthermore, the monthly water level estimates derived from the Sentinel-3 data showed consistent seasonal trends over the multi-year study period. The annual water level of all lakes did not change significantly, except for Shijiu Lake, of which the difference between the highest and lowest water level was up to about 5 m. Our findings confirmed the water level observation ability of Sentinel-3. The accuracy of water level monitoring could be influenced by internal water level differences, terrain features, as well as the area and shape of the lake. Larger lakes with more altimetry sampling points tended to yield higher accuracy estimates of water level fluctuations. These results demonstrate that the frequent, wide-area coverage offered by this satellite platform provides valuable hydrological information, especially across remote regions lacking in situ data. In the architecture, engineering, and construction industries, the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) has become instrumental in shaping the design and commissioning of smart buildings. At the center of this development is the pursuit of more intelligent, efficient, and sustainable built environments. The emergence of smart buildings equipped with advanced sensor networks and automation systems increasingly requires the implementation of Digital Twins (DT) for the direct coupling of BIM methods for integral building planning, commissioning, and operational monitoring. While simulation tools and methods exist in the design phase of developing advanced controls, their mapping to construction or post-construction models is less well developed. Through systematic, keyword-based literature research on publisher-independent databases, this review paper gives a comprehensive overview of the state of the research on BIM integration of building control systems with a primary focus on combined controls for daylight and artificial lighting systems. The review, supported by a bibliometric literature analysis, highlights major development fields in HVAC controls, failure detection, and fire-detection systems, while the integration of daylight and artificial lighting controls in Digital Twins is still at an early stage of development. In addition to already existing reviews in the context of BIM and Digital planning methods, this review particularly intends to build the necessary knowledge base to further motivate research activities to integrate simulation-based control methods in the BIM planning process and to further close the gap between planning, implementation, and commissioning. Ultrasonic sensors are one of the most common automatic monitoring methods in operational snow depth monitoring with reliable results. On the other hand, there is significant uncertainty when measuring small snow depths (<2 cm), thus it cannot provide binary snow presence (on/off) information. The use of webcams in monitoring snow cover has proven to be successful in recent studies and applications. In this study, we applied an adaptive thresholding technique on images from webcams to obtain reliable snow on/off information to complement the ultrasonic snow depth measurements. Camera and ultrasonic sensor data from two weather stations in Finland were studied. The webcam data was processed using FMIPROT (Finnish Meteorological Institute Image Processing Tool) software, operating in a cloud computing environment, which can generate near real-time data. Our results indicate that webcam-derived data can be successfully used for quality control or as auxiliary data to support operational ultrasonic sensor measurements and provide a cost-effective improvement to operational monitoring capabilities. The identification and monitoring of cyanobacterial blooms (CBs) is critical for ensuring water security. However, traditional methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive and are not ideal for large-scale monitoring. In operational monitoring, the existing remote sensing methods are also not ideal due to complex surface features, unstable models, and poor robustness thresholds. Here, a novel algorithm, the pseudo-Forel-Ule index (P-FUI), is developed and validated to identify cyanobacterial blooms based on Terra MODIS, Landsat-8 OLI, Sentinel-2 MSI, and Sentinel-3 OLCI sensors. First, three parameters of P-FUI, that is, brightness Y, saturation s, and hue angle α, were calculated based on remote sensing reflectance. Then, the robustness thresholds of the parameters were determined by statistical analysis for a frequency distribution histogram. We validated the accuracy of our approach using high-spatial-resolution satellite data with the aid of field investigations. Considerable results were obtained by using water color differences directly. The overall classification accuracy is more than 93.76%, and the user's accuracy and producer's accuracy are more than 94.60% and 94.00%, respectively, with a kappa coefficient of 0.91. The identified cyanobacterial blooms' spatial distribution with high, medium, and low intensity produced consistent results compared to those based on satellite data. Impact factors were also discussed, and the algorithm was shown to be tolerant of perturbations by clouds and high turbidity. Mangrove forests are a biodiverse ecosystem known for a wide variety of crucial ecological services, including carbon sequestration, coastal erosion control, and prevention of saltwater intrusion. Given the ecological importance of mangrove forests, a comprehensive and up-to-date mangrove extent mapping at broad geographic scales is needed to define mangrove forest changes, assess their implications, and support restoration activities and decision making. The main objective of this study is to evaluate mangrove classifications derived from a combination of Landsat-8 OLI, Sentinel-2, and Sentinel-1 observations using a random forest (RF) machine learning (ML) algorithm to identify the best approach for monitoring Guyana's mangrove forests on an annual basis. Algorithm accuracy was tested using high-resolution planet imagery in Collect Earth Online. Results varied widely across the different combinations of input data (overall accuracy, 88–95%; producer's accuracy for mangroves, 50–87%; user's accuracy for mangroves, 13–69%). The combined optical–radar classification demonstrated the best performance with an overall accuracy of 95%. Area estimates of mangrove extent ranged from 908.4 to 3645.0 hectares. A ground-based validation exercise confirmed the extent of several large, previously undocumented areas of mangrove forest loss. The results establish that a data fusion approach combining optical and radar data performs marginally better than optical-only approaches to mangrove classification. This ML approach, which leverages free and open data and a cloud-based analytics platform, can be applied to mapping other areas of mangrove forests in Guyana. Dendrochronology is a technique that can be applied as a retrospective monitoring (RM) approach to evaluate the performance of nutrient application in forest ecosystems. Applying the RM approach across operations lacks experimental controls, which may adversely affect accuracy and precision of estimates due to greater mismatches in stand conditions between treated and untreated plots. To test the rigor of the RM approach, we collected increment cores of coastal Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) at eight sites of an experiment where stands were fertilized in 1971. First, we tested the approach under ideal conditions by sampling from treated and untreated plots of the experiment. Second, we tested the approach using newly established surrogate control (SC) plots, which differed in ecological site classification from those of the treated plots to understand how robust the approach was to mismatches in conditions between treated and untreated samples. We hypothesized that detrending ring width would mitigate error in responses to nutrient application resulting from mismatches in site classification. Within the experiment, the approach indicated an average increase of 15% (5% to 26%, p < 0.05) growth response to operational doses of urea. Different responses were found when the analysis relied on SC plots. Detrending low-frequency variation in ring widths eliminated differences in results arising, at least in part, to mismatches in site class. However, it also reduced the growth response using the experimental control plots to 10%. Dendrochronology with detrending shows promise in the ability to mitigate variation introduced by mismatches in ecological site classification that may occur in operational monitoring. HF radar systems form part of many operational coastal monitoring systems providing near-real-time surface currents for many useful applications. Although wave measurements have been possible with these systems for many years, they have not yet been adopted widely for operational monitoring because they have not been thought to be sufficiently accurate or reliable. However, the value of such data is beginning to be appreciated, and this is motivating more work on wave measurement with HF radar systems with many more papers on accuracy assessment and data availability appearing in the literature. In this paper, the wave measurement capability, limitations, and differences between different radar types are reviewed, and methods to assess accuracy are discussed and applied to phased array HF radar data obtained from the University of Plymouth WERA radars using the Seaview Software inversion method during April and November 2012 compared with directional buoy data. Good accuracy over a range of different wave parameters will be demonstrated. Newly available single-radar inversions are shown to be less accurate than dual-radar inversions, although they still provide useful data, and ways to improve performance are discussed. Swell and wind–sea components in the directional spectra are identified, and qualitative agreement with buoy peak parameters is demonstrated. The widespread nature of heat-resistant alloys is associated with the difficulties in their mechanical machining. It forces the use of the wire electrical discharge machining to be wider. The productivity, roughness, and dimensions of the modified layer of the machined surfaces are indicators of the machining quality. The search for new diagnostic parameters that can expand the information content of the operational monitoring/diagnostics of wire electrical discharge machining and accompany the currently used electrical parameters' data is an urgent research task. The article presents the studies of the relationship between the parameters of acoustic emission signals accompanying wire electrical discharge machining of heat-resistant alloys, process quality indicators, and characteristics of discharge pulses. The results are presented as mathematical expressions and graphs demonstrating the experimentally obtained dependencies. The research focuses on the formed white layer during wire electrical discharge machining. Pictures of thin cross-sections of the machined surfaces with traces of the modified layer are provided. Antarctic mapping with satellite images is an important basic task for polar environmental monitoring. Since the first Chinese marine satellite was launched in 2002, China has formed three series of more than 10 marine satellites in orbit. As global operational monitoring satellites of ocean color series, HY-1C and HY-1D have good coverage characteristics and imaging performance in polar regions, and they provide an effective tool for Antarctic monitoring and mapping. In this paper, Antarctic images acquired by the HY-1 satellite Coastal Zone Imager (CZI) sensor were used to study color matching in the mosaic process. According to the CZI characteristics for Antarctic imaging, experiments were carried out on the illuminance nonuniformity of a single image and color registration of multiple images. A gray-level segmentation color-matching method is proposed to solve the problem of image overstretching in the Antarctic image color-matching process. The results and statistical analysis show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate the color deviation between HY-1 Antarctic images, and the mosaic results have a good effect. In high-speed railway operational monitoring network systems targeting railway infrastructure as its monitoring objective, there is a wide variety of sensor types with diverse operational requirements. These systems have varying demands on data transmission latency and network lifespan. Most of the previous research focuses only on prolonging network lifetime or reducing data transmission delays when designing or optimizing routing protocols, without co-designing the two. In addition, due to the harsh operating environment of high-speed railways, when the network changes dynamically, the traditional routing algorithm generates unnecessary redesigns and leads to high overhead. Based on the actual needs of high-speed railway operation environment monitoring, this paper proposes a novel Double Q-values adaptive model combined with the existing reinforcement learning method, which considers the energy balance of the network and real-time data transmission, and constructs energy saving and delay. The two-dimensional reward avoids the extra overhead of maintaining a global routing table while capturing network dynamics. In addition, the adaptive weight coefficient is used to ensure the adaptability of the model to each business of the high-speed railway operation environment monitoring system. Finally, simulations and performance evaluations are carried out and compared with previous studies. The results show that the proposed routing algorithm extends the network lifecycle by 33% compared to the comparison algorithm and achieves good real-time data performance. Gas flaring is an environmental problem of local, regional and global concerns. Gas flares emit pollutants and greenhouse gases, yet knowledge about the source strength is limited due to disparate reporting approaches in different geographies, whenever and wherever those are considered. Remote sensing has bridged the gap but uncertainties remain. There are numerous sensors which provide measurements over flaring-active regions in wavelengths that are suitable for the observation of gas flares and the retrieval of flaring activity. However, their use for operational monitoring has been limited. Besides several potential sensors, there are also different approaches to conduct the retrievals. In the current paper, we compare two retrieval approaches over an offshore flaring area during an extended period of time. Our results show that retrieved activities are consistent between methods although discrepancies may originate for individual flares at the highly temporal scale, which are traced back to the variable nature of flaring. The presented results are helpful for the estimation of flaring activity from different sources and will be useful in a future integration of diverse sensors and methodologies into a single monitoring scheme. This article discusses the results obtained from performing a test acoustic-hydrological experiment in August 2022 at a marine test site from the coast of Sakhalin Island to the Kita-Yamato Bank in the Sea of Japan. A methodology for preliminary studies in the water area is presented. It is designed to study the climatic variability of the temperature regimes of the aquatic environment based on numerical modeling using the RAY computer program and the NEMO ocean hydrodynamic circulation model. One of the main results is the value of the average temperature of the marine environment calculated with high accuracy on the axis of the underwater sound channel in the Sea of Japan on a thousand-kilometer acoustic path when crossing the vortex system. The appearance of the measuring system, technical means, and methods described in the article can be used as the basis for organizing high-precision operational monitoring of thermodynamic processes in extended marine areas. This paper examines the impacts of three different potential evapotranspiration (PET) models on drought severity and frequencies indicated by the standardized precipitation index (SPEI). The standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index is a recent approach to operational monitoring and analysis of drought severity. The standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index combines precipitation and temperature data, quantifying the severity of a drought as the difference in a timestep as the difference between precipitation and PET. The standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index thus represents the hydrological processes that drive drought events more realistically than the standardized precipitation index at the expense of additional computational complexity and increased data demands. The additional computational complexity is principally due to the need to estimate PET within each time step. The standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index was originally defined using the Thornthwaite PET model. However, numerous researchers have demonstrated the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index is sensitive to the PET model adopted. PET models requiring sparse meteorological inputs, such as the Thornthwaite model, have particular utility for drought monitoring in data scarce environments. The aridity index (AI) investigates the spatiotemporal changes in the hydroclimatic system. It is defined as the ratio between potential evapotranspiration and precipitation. It is used to characterize wet (humid) and dry (arid) regions. In this study, a sensitivity analysis for the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration and aridity indexes was carried out using three different PET models; namely, the Penman–Monteith model, a temperature-based parametric model and the Thornthwaite model. The analysis was undertaken in six gauge stations in California region where long-term drought events have occurred. Having used the Penman–Monteith model as the PET model for estimating the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index, our findings highlight the presence of uncertainty in defining the severity of drought, especially for large timescales (12 months to 48 months), and that the PET parametric model is a preferable model to the Thornthwaite model for both the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index and the aridity indexes. The latter outcome is worth further consideration for when climatic studies are under development in data scarce areas where full required meteorological variables for Penman–Monteith assessment are not available. Using airborne drones to monitor water quality in inland, transitional or coastal surface waters is an emerging research field. Airborne drones can fly under clouds at preferred times, capturing data at cm resolution, filling a significant gap between existing in situ, airborne and satellite remote sensing capabilities. Suitable drones and lightweight cameras are readily available on the market, whereas deriving water quality products from the captured image is not straightforward; vignetting effects, georeferencing, the dynamic nature and high light absorption efficiency of water, sun glint and sky glint effects require careful data processing. This paper presents the data processing workflow behind MapEO water, an end-to-end cloud-based solution that deals with the complexities of observing water surfaces and retrieves water-leaving reflectance and water quality products like turbidity and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration. MapEO water supports common camera types and performs a geometric and radiometric correction and subsequent conversion to reflectance and water quality products. This study shows validation results of water-leaving reflectance, turbidity and Chl-a maps derived using DJI Phantom 4 pro and MicaSense cameras for several lakes across Europe. Coefficients of determination values of 0.71 and 0.93 are obtained for turbidity and Chl-a, respectively. We conclude that airborne drone data has major potential to be embedded in operational monitoring programmes and can form useful links between satellite and in situ observations. Solid Waste Management (SWM) is a technical subject which requires comprehensive planning, execution, and effective operational monitoring under cost-effective modes compatible with environmentally sound technologies. The policymakers made some enormous efforts for the sustainability of this sector as well as setting a benchmark for other municipalities and Waste Management Companies (WMCs) in the country. Provincial Government prioritizes its focus on SWM, i.e., waste collection, transportation, treatment, and final disposal. The waste management sector in Lahore has achieved sustainability in waste collection and haulage components by gaining experience from international outsourcing and, now, sharing its knowledge with other municipalities to strengthen the sector in the country. Lahore has emerged with the highest collection efficiency (84%) in SAARC countries and placed fifth in rank in comparison to 54 low–middle-income countries/cities worldwide. The sectorial interventions in Lahore reveal an aspiration for the sustainability of the SWM sector in Pakistan. However, there is an urgent need to focus and invest in waste-related infrastructure development, i.e., permanent/mobile transfer stations, semi-underground containers for commercial and planned areas, material recovery facilities (MRF), and landfill. Environmental and economic sustainability in this sector can be achieved through public–private partnership (PPP) modality in compost, anaerobic digestion, recycling, and refuse-derived fuel (RDF) as it is a more feasible option to strengthen the industry in the country. This paper describes HYDRONET, a telemetry-based prototype of a streamflow monitoring network in the Greek territory, where such data are sparse. HYDRONET provides free and near-real-time online access to data. Instead of commercially available stations, in-house-designed and -built telemetric stations were installed, which reduced the equipment cost by approximately 50%. The labour of hydrometric campaigns was reduced by applying a new maximum-entropy method to estimate the discharge from surface velocity observations. Here, we describe these novelty elements succinctly. The potential of HYDRONET to provide civil protection services is exemplified by a flood warning demonstrator for Kalamata's City Centre. The network's operation, including the hydraulic criteria for monitoring site selection, the characteristics of the telemetric equipment, the operational monitoring and hydrometric procedures, and the specifics of data transmission, quality control, and storage are described in detail, along with experiences with problems encountered during this pilot phase. When describing the behaviour and modelling of real systems, which are characterized by considerable complexity, great difficulty, and often the impossibility of their formal mathematical description, and whose operational monitoring and measurement are difficult, conventional analytical–statistical models run into the limits of their use. The application of these models leads to necessary simplifications, which cause insufficient adequacy of the resulting mathematical description. In such cases, it is appropriate for modelling to use the methods brought by a new scientific discipline—artificial intelligence. Artificial neural networks are mathematical models that approximate non-linear functions of an arbitrary waveform. The advantage of neural networks is their ability to generalize the dependencies between individual quantities by learning the presented patterns. This property of a neural network is referred to as generalization. Their use is suitable for processing complex problems where the dependencies between individual quantities are not exactly known. Tropical cyclones (TCs) are destructive natural disasters. Accurate prediction and monitoring are important to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Although remarkable efforts have been made to understand TCs, operational monitoring information still depends on the experience and knowledge of forecasters. In this study, a fully automated geostationary-satellite-based TC center estimation approach is proposed. The proposed approach consists of two improved methods: the setting of regions of interest (ROI) using a score matrix (SCM) and a TC center determination method using an enhanced logarithmic spiral band (LSB) and SCM. The former enables prescreening of the regions that may be misidentified as TC centers during the ROI setting step, and the latter contributes to the determination of an accurate TC center, considering the size and length of the TC rainband in relation to its intensity. Two schemes, schemes A and B, were examined depending on whether the forecasting data or real-time observations were used to determine the initial guess of the TC centers. For each scheme, two models were evaluated to discern whether SCM was combined with LSB for TC center determination. The results were investigated based on TC intensity and phase to determine the impact of TC structural characteristics on TC center determination. While both proposed models improved the detection performance over the existing approach, the best-performing model (i.e., LSB combined with SCM) achieved skill scores (SSs) of +17.4% and +20.8% for the two schemes. In particular, the model resulted in a significant improvement for strong TCs (categories 4 and 5), with SSs of +47.8% and +72.8% and +41.2% and +72.3% for schemes A and B, respectively. The research findings provide an improved understanding of the intensity- and phase-wise spatial characteristics of TCs, which contributes to objective TC center estimation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The obtained procedures could be applied on several environmental data in order to cyclically and promptly repeat spatial analysis to detect changes in space and time in support of ecosystem conservation issues, especially to evaluate the impact of illegal actions (e.g., forest harvesting) or natural hazards (e.g., destructive storms or other natural disasters) on habitat distribution. Among the methods used to process the remotely sensed data, the increasing focus on the use of machine learning algorithm models such as Random Forests (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Linear Regression (LR), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Deep Learning (DL) classifier is noteworthy. Consistent and spatially explicit periodic monitoring of forest structure is essential for estimating forest-related carbon emissions, analyzing forest degradation, and supporting sustainable forest management policies. To date, few products are available that allow for continental to global operational monitoring of changes in canopy structure. In this study, we explored the synergy between the NASA's spaceborne Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) waveform LiDAR and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) data to produce spatially explicit and consistent annual maps of canopy height (CH), percent canopy cover (PCC), plant area index (PAI), and foliage height diversity (FHD) across the conterminous United States (CONUS) at a 1-km resolution for 2013–2020. The accuracies of the annual maps were assessed using forest structure attribute derived from airborne laser scanning (ALS) data acquired between 2013 and 2020 for the 48 National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) field sites distributed across the CONUS. The root mean square error (RMSE) values of the annual canopy height maps as compared with the ALS reference data varied from a minimum of 3.31-m for 2020 to a maximum of 4.19-m for 2017. Similarly, the RMSE values for PCC ranged between 8% (2020) and 11% (all other years). Qualitative evaluations of the annual maps using time series of very high-resolution images further suggested that the VIIRS-derived products could capture both large and "more" subtle changes in forest structure associated with partial harvesting, wind damage, wildfires, and other environmental stresses. The methods developed in this study are expected to enable multi-decadal analysis of forest structure and its dynamics using consistent satellite observations from moderate resolution sensors such as VIIRS onboard JPSS satellites. Moscow State University is developing a project for a multi-satellite constellation intended for the monitoring of space radiation. A number of small satellites of CubeSat format were launched into selected orbits crossing the wide range of magnetic drift shells. The primary scope for the project is the operational monitoring of near-Earth's radiation environment, i.e., fluxes of electrons and protons of Earth's radiation belts and energetic particles of solar and galactic origin. To date, there are four CubeSat satellites operating in near-Earth orbits, which deliver scientific and telemetric data. Thus, for the first time, a unique multi-satellite constellation has been implemented, which makes it possible to simultaneously measure the particle and quantum fluxes at different areas in the near-Earth space using the same type of instruments. A special compact detector of gamma quanta and energetic charged particles (electrons and protons) DeCoR has been developed to carry out radiation monitoring by CubeSats. With their help, observations of various effects of space weather have been made. These effects include a variety of electron fluxes in the outer belt during geomagnetic activity in late November–early December 2021, filling of polar caps by solar energetic particles accelerated in flares occurring in late October–early November, and the existence of stable electron fluxes near the geomagnetic equator. This article presents the QDA-System (Sistema Qualidade da Água, from Portuguese), a system developed to monitor the quality of surface waters in Brazilian hydroelectric reservoirs using satellite images and cloud computing services. The development requirements of the QDA-System considered its use for operational monitoring purposes, with all processing steps automated, and a user-friendly interface to access and query the data generated automatically by the system. A pilot application of the QDA-System was customized and implemented for monitoring the Foz do Chapecó hydroelectric reservoir located in southern Brazil. For the pilot application, the QDA-System was customized to estimate nine water quality parameters,: five were estimated directly from Sentinel-2 multispectral images and four were estimated indirectly. We expect that in the near future the QDA-System can be replicated to monitor other Brazilian reservoirs, bringing benefits and cost reduction related to water quality monitoring, not only for the sector of hydroelectric generation but for other sectors that also need similar monitoring, such as sanitation and aquaculture production. Aluminum and its alloys are widely used in the busbar structures of electrolytic aluminum production. However, they are prone to corrosion and wear damage during use, leading to a decline in current-transmission efficiency and potentially causing safety issues. To repair damaged aluminum busbars, this paper explores the feasibility of using cold spraying technology for surface restoration. Using 6063 aluminum alloy as the substrate, AlZn/nickel-plated graphite composite coatings were applied through cold spraying. The effects of different nickel-plated graphite contents on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of the coatings were studied. Annealing treatments (200 °C, 300 °C, 400 °C) were further used to improve the coating's density and performance. The results show that with an increase in the nickel-plated graphite content, the porosity of the coating gradually increases, while the coating's density and bond strength improve. Additionally, the annealing treatment significantly enhanced the uniformity and hardness of the coating. Moreover, the cold-sprayed coatings exhibited excellent corrosion resistance, especially in the annealed coatings, which showed superior microstructural stability and lower corrosion current density. This study provides a new technological approach for the repair of aluminum busbars and offers an in-depth discussion on the application of cold spraying technology in the surface restoration of aluminum-based composite materials. West Africa faces a complex range of challenges arising from climatic, social, economic, and ecological factors, which pose significant risks. The rapidly growing population, coupled with persistently low agricultural yield, further exacerbates these risks. A state-of-the-art monitoring and data derivation of agricultural systems are crucial for improving livelihoods and enhancing food security. Despite smallholder farming systems accounting for 80% of cultivated cropland area and providing about 42% of the total employment in West Africa, there exists a lack of a comprehensive overview of Remote Sensing (RS) products and studies specifically tailored to smallholder farming systems, which this review aims to address. Through a systematic literature review comprising 163 SCI papers sourced from the Web of Science database (Filter I), followed by a full-text review (Filter II), we analyze the RS sensors, spatiotemporal distribution, temporal scales, the crop types examined, and thematic foci employed in existing research. Our findings highlight the predominance of high to very high-resolution, multispectral sensors as the primary data source and we observe that a wide array of available sensors and datasets, along with increasing computing capacities, have shaped the field over the last years. By highlighting existing knowledge, this study identifies the potential of RS and pinpoints the key research gaps. Background: Blockchain technology can transform military operations, increasing security and transparency and gaining efficiency. It addresses many problems related to data security, privacy, communication, and supply chain management. The most researched aspects are its integration with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, the IoT, application in uncrewed aerial vehicles, and secure communications. Methods: A systematic review of 43 peer-reviewed articles was performed to discover the applications of blockchain in defense. Key areas analyzed include the role of blockchain in securing communications, fostering transparency, promoting real-time data sharing, and using smart contracts for maintenance management. Challenges were assessed, including scalability, interoperability, and integration with the legacy system, alongside possible solutions, such as sharding and optimized consensus mechanisms. Results: In the case of blockchain, great potential benefits were shown in enhancing military operations, including secure communication, immutable record keeping, and real-time integration of data with the IoT and AI. Smart contracts optimized resource allocation and reduced maintenance procedures. However, challenges remain, such as scalability, interoperability, and high energy requirements. Proposed solutions, like sharding and hybrid architecture, show promise to address these issues. Conclusions: Blockchain is set to revolutionize the efficiency and security of the military. Its potential is enormous, but it must overcome scalability, interoperability, and integration issues. In the rapidly changing digital economy, manufacturing companies are under growing pressure to adopt new approaches to business management by developing digital capabilities. This research explores the role of digital technologies in enabling these capabilities, using the Digital Capability Model (DCM) as a guiding framework. While previous research often focused on theoretical perspectives, this study operationalizes the DCM by identifying specific applications of digital technologies that enhance business processes. Through a multiple case study methodology, eight manufacturing companies were examined to assess how digital technologies foster the development of digital capabilities. The case studies provide practical insights into the application of these technologies and their impact on organizational resilience and competitiveness, particularly in response to global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings reveal that certain technologies are more promising than others for enhancing digital capabilities and that their strategic implementation significantly improves a company's ability to navigate uncertainty. Embracing digital transformation not only mitigates operational risks but also ensures sustainable competitive advantages in an increasingly volatile and complex environment. This research bridges the gap between theory and practice, offering actionable insights for managers to strategically develop and leverage digital capabilities for long-term success. Retrofitting legacy systems provides significant advantages by addressing compatibility issues with new devices and technologies, meeting current process requirements, and increasing security and regulatory compliance. The process starts by collecting requirements and evaluating the legacy system's attributes and limitations, followed by integrating modern technologies to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and enhancing performance and interoperability while leveraging existing facilities to reduce costs. A systematic approach ensures that updates align with modern technological standards, with performance evaluations conducted via qualitative and quantitative methods and system maturity assessed according to the Reference Architecture Model for Industries 4.0 (RAMI 4.0 model's) criteria for intelligent factories. By incorporating digital twin (DT) capabilities, which replicate the physical state of systems and provide real-time data updates, the retrofit strategy aligns the physical system with Industry 4.0 contexts, facilitating continuous improvement and seamless integration with modern processes. The goal is to advance the legacy system technologically to ensure seamless integration with contemporary processes, validated through RAMI criteria analysis for smart factories. As part of this process, digital twin architecture was built. This architecture was the basis for building and operating digital twins in the process. The methodology was used to enhance and transform legacy systems, creating the foundation for creating a fully digital twin. Using this method, these systems can be updated to meet the requirements of Industry 4.0. With the rapid advancement of modern industries, pressure vessels and piping have become increasingly integral to sectors such as energy, petrochemicals, and process industries. To grasp the research and application status in the field of pressure vessel and piping safety, 670 publications in the Web of Science core database from 2008 to 2024 were taken as data samples in this paper. The knowledge mapping tools were used to carry out co-occurrence analysis, keyword burst detection, and co-citation analysis. The results show that the research in this field presents a multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary state, involving multiple disciplines such as Nuclear Science and Technology, Engineering Mechanics, and Energy and Fuels. The "International Journal of Hydrogen Energy", "International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping", and "Nuclear Engineering and Design" are the primary publication outlets in this domain. The study identifies three major research hotspots: (1) the safety performance of pressure vessels and piping, (2) structural integrity, failure mechanisms, and stress analysis, and (3) numerical simulation and thermal–hydraulic analysis under various operating conditions. The current challenges can be summarized into three aspects: (1) addressing the safety risks brought by new technologies and materials, (2) promoting innovation and the application of detection and monitoring technologies, and (3) strengthening the building capacity for accident prevention and emergency management. Specific to China, the current challenges include the safety and management of aging equipment, the effective detection of circumferential weld cracks, the refinement of risk assessment models, and the advancement of smart technology applications. Floods have catastrophic effects worldwide, particularly in monsoonal Asia. This systematic review investigates the literature from the past two decades, focusing on the use of remote sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GISs), and technologies for flood disaster management in South Asia, and addresses the urgent need for effective strategies in the face of escalating flood disasters. This study emphasizes the importance of tailored GIS- and RS-based flood disaster studies inspired by diverse research, particularly in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, and the Maldives. Our dataset comprises 94 research articles from Google Scholar, Scopus, and ScienceDirect. The analysis revealed an upward trend after 2014, with a peak in 2023 for publications on flood-related topics, primarily within the scope of RS and GIS, flood-risk monitoring, and flood-risk assessment. Keyword analysis using VOSviewer revealed that out of 6402, the most used keyword was "climate change", with 360 occurrences. Bibliometric analysis shows that 1104 authors from 52 countries meet the five minimum document requirements. Indian and Pakistani researchers published the most number of papers, whereas Elsevier, Springer, and MDPI were the three largest publishers. Thematic analysis has identified several major research areas, including flood risk assessment, flood monitoring, early flood warning, RS and GIS, hydrological modeling, and urban planning. RS and GIS technologies have been shown to have transformative effects on early detection, accurate mapping, vulnerability assessment, decision support, community engagement, and cross-border collaboration. Future research directions include integrating advanced technologies, fine-tuning spatial resolution, multisensor data fusion, social–environmental integration, climate change adaptation strategies, community-centric early warning systems, policy integration, ethics and privacy protocols, and capacity-building initiatives. This systematic review provides extensive knowledge and offers valuable insights to help researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and communities address the intricate problems of flood management in the dynamic landscapes of South Asia.
