In modern China, industrialization has formed a critical foundation for the transition to modernization. However, the spatiotemporal evolution patterns and driving mechanisms of urban industrial development in Nanjing from 1840 to 1949 remain unclear. Based on textual historical sources, this study examined the spatiotemporal patterns of urban industrial development in Nanjing from 1840 to 1949 by using spatial analysis methods, GeoDetector, regression models and industrial structure indices. The results reveal the following: (1) The overall spatial distribution pattern of the industry in modern Nanjing exhibited a "one main, one secondary" dual-center "ladle-shaped" arrangement. Over time, industry has expanded from the urban center toward the east and north. (2) The modernization level of different industries was uneven, exhibiting a "center-periphery" spatial pattern. (3) At the micro level, transportation and population density were the primary influencing factors for industrial location, whereas at the macro level, government intervention mainly affected the industrialization pattern. (4) The industrial development pattern in modern Nanjing, in alignment with the "pole-axis" spatial system, serves as a microcosm of China's urban modernization transition. Accurately measuring industrial spatial agglomeration patterns is crucial for promoting regional economic development. However, few studies have considered both agglomeration degrees and cluster locations of industries. Moreover, the traditional multi-scale cluster location mining (MCLM) method still has limitations in terms of accuracy, parameter setting, calculation efficiency, etc. This study proposes a new framework for analyzing industrial spatial agglomeration patterns, which uses the Duranton and Overman (DO) index for estimating agglomeration degrees and a newly developed local DO (LDO) index for mining cluster locations. The MCLM-LDO method was proposed by incorporating the LDO index into the MCLM method, and it was validated via comparisons with three baseline methods based on two synthetic datasets. The results proved that the MCLM-LDO method can achieve accuracies of 0.945 and 1 with computational times of 0.15 s and 0.11 s on two datasets, which are superior to existing MCLM methods. The proposed framework was further applied to analyze the spatial agglomeration patterns of the industry of computer, communication, and other electronic equipment manufacturing in Guangdong Province, China. The results showed that the framework gives a more holistic perspective of spatial agglomeration patterns, which can serve as more meaningful references for industrial sustainable development. The global surge in environmental pollution, largely attributed to industrialization, has fueled a pressing need for sustainable solutions. In response, the construction sector is increasingly focusing on bio-based materials such as hemp, recognized for its low environmental footprint and prominent carbon-negative quality. As designers, housebuilders, and an environmentally conscious society pivot towards ecological alternatives to standard building materials, hempcrete emerges as a promising candidate. As a composite material mainly made from hemp hurd/shiv, water, and lime, hempcrete offers the ability to sequester carbon long after its incorporation into structures. As a result, the hemp cultivation process—which can be completed within less than four months—ensures that more carbon is absorbed during production and deployment than emitted, e.g., per one study, sequestration on the order of 300 kg of CO2 per m3 of hempcrete. In comparison to concrete, hempcrete offers a more sustainable footprint, given its recyclability post life cycle. This state-of-the-art review paper delves deep into different aspects of hempcrete, summarizing its multifaceted attributes, particularly its compressive strength. Based on the study conducted, the paper also suggests strategies to augment this strength, thereby transitioning hempcrete from a non-load-bearing material to one capable of shouldering significant weight. As architects and designers consistently strive to align their projects with high ecological standards, focusing not just on aesthetic appeal but also environmental compatibility, hempcrete becomes an increasingly fitting solution for the future of construction. China's industrial sector generally relies on electricity as its main source of energy, and industrial production can be affected if there are problems with the electricity supply. In order to deal with the uncertain electricity supply and achieve the "dual carbon" target, the industrial sector needs to take effective measures to enhance carbon total factor productivity (CTFP). We use the biennial Luenberger productivity index (BLPI) to try to provide strategies for low-carbon industrial development in China. The results indicate that the overall CTFP of China's industrial sector showed an increasing trend from 2006 to 2019. Technology change was the main contributor to the change in CTFP, but fluctuations in efficiency change remained a challenge. Differences were observed between the light industry sector (LIS) and the heavy industry sector (HIS) in terms of changes in CTFP, with LIS showing more stable changes and HIS experiencing larger fluctuations. Most sub-sectors showed increased CTFP during the sample period. R&D investment and R&D personnel have a positive impact on CTFP, while energy structure is found to hinder CTFP. According to the research results of this study, we offer the corresponding policy implications. This study is the first to explore the balance between low-carbon goals and industrial production from the perspective of improving CTFP, providing a new viewpoint on the contributions of technological innovation to solving socio-economic issues. With the development of nanotechnology and confronting the problems of traditional pharmaceutical formulations in treating lung diseases, inhalable nano-formulations have attracted interest. Inhalable nano-formulations for treating lung diseases allow for precise pulmonary drug delivery, overcoming physiological barriers, improving aerosol lung deposition rates, and increasing drug bioavailability. They are expected to solve the difficulties faced in treating lung diseases. However, limited success has been recorded in the industrialization translation of inhalable nano-formulations. Only one relevant product has been approved by the FDA to date, suggesting that there are still many issues to be resolved in the clinical application of inhalable nano-formulations. These systems are characterized by a dependence on inhalation devices, while the adaptability of device formulation is still inconclusive, which is the most important issue impeding translational research. In this review, we categorized various inhalable nano-formulations, summarized the advantages of inhalable nano-formulations over conventional inhalation formulations, and listed the inhalable nano-formulations undergoing clinical studies. We focused on the influence of inhalation devices on nano-formulations and analyzed their adaptability. After extensive analysis of the drug delivery mechanisms, technical processes, and limitations of different inhalation devices, we concluded that vibrating mesh nebulizers might be most suitable for delivering inhalable nano-formulations, and related examples were introduced to validate our view. Industrial development has led to the widespread production of toxic materials, including carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic chemicals. Even with strict management and control measures, such materials still pose threats to human health. Therefore, convenient chemical sensors are required for toxic chemical monitoring, such as optical, electrochemical, nanomaterial-based, and biological-system-based sensors. Many existing and new chemical sensors have been developed, as well as new methods based on novel technologies for detecting toxic materials. The emergence of material sciences and advanced technologies for fabrication and signal-transducing processes has led to substantial improvements in the sensing elements for target recognition and signal-transducing elements for reporting interactions between targets and sensing elements. Many excellent reviews have effectively summarized the general principles and applications of different types of chemical sensors. Therefore, this review focuses on chemical sensor advancements in terms of the sensing and signal-transducing elements, as well as more recent achievements in chemical sensors for toxic material detection. Improving energy efficiency is vital for addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions in emerging economies. Financial development (FD) is crucial for economic growth, and its environmental impact and the adjustment of the industrial structure (IND) is a crucial lever in China's economic transition period. This study explored the relationship between FD, IND, and China's green total factor productivity (GTFEE) from 2000 to 2020 using the super-efficiency SBM-undesirable model, which estimates China's GTFEE. The ARDL results suggest that FD and IND enhance GTFEE in the long term, with FD promoting GTFEE by facilitating industrial structure adjustments. The Dumitrescu–Hurlin panel causality tests supported this finding. The QRPD panel quantile regression and heterogeneity analysis revealed significant heterogeneity in the effects. With increasing GTFEE, FD exerts a restraining effect, gradually weakening and transitioning into a promoting effect, while the IND consistently plays a promoting role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: A primary cause of heavy metal pollution in the environment is human economic activity associated with increased industrialisation and urbanisation, agricultural development, transport, and energy production. The present study determines the degree of contamination by cadmium (Cd), a heavy metal, based on its concentrations in the organs of animals living in regions of Poland. Our findings indicate that Cd is present in the highest concentrations in the southern regions of Poland, where the mining, energy, metallurgical, and steel industries are located. Surprisingly, high Cd concentrations were also found in the northeastern region, which is generally considered to be unpolluted. The aim of this study was to determine the concentration of cadmium (Cd) in the organs of game animals from areas with different degrees of industrialisation and to assess its intake following the consumption of the livers of these animals. The material for this study consisted of liver and kidney samples taken from roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and wild boar (Sus scrofa) from five regions differing in land use and industrialisation. Compared to the kidneys, the liver was an indicator of the current state of the environment and Cd intake, while the kidney was used to assess the long-term accumulation of Cd in the body. The cadmium concentration in the samples was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The cadmium concentrations of the organs were found to vary according to geographical location, with the highest levels being observed in Southern Poland, i.e., areas characterised by the highest degree of industrialisation and the presence of heavy industry. However, high Cd concentrations were also reported in the northeastern region. Examples of excessive cadmium levels in the kidneys were noted in all tested regions. Cd intake by humans was evaluated by calculating the estimated daily cadmium intake, and this was compared with the tolerable weekly intake (TWI). β-Farnesene is an advanced molecule with promising applications in agriculture, the cosmetics industry, pharmaceuticals, and bioenergy. To supplement the shortcomings of rational design in the development of high-producing β-farnesene strains, a Metabolic Pathway Design-Fermentation Test-Metabolomic Analysis-Target Mining experimental cycle was designed. In this study, by over-adding 20 different amino acids/nucleobases to induce fluctuations in the production of β-farnesene, the changes in intracellular metabolites in the β-farnesene titer-increased group were analyzed using non-targeted metabolomics. Differential metabolites that were detected in each experimental group were selected, and their metabolic pathways were located. Based on these differential metabolites, targeted strain gene editing and culture medium optimization were performed. The overexpression of the coenzyme A synthesis-related gene pantothenate kinase (PanK) and the addition of four mixed water-soluble vitamins in the culture medium increased the β-farnesene titer in the shake flask to 1054.8 mg/L, a 48.5% increase from the initial strain. In the subsequent fed-batch fermentation, the β-farnesene titer further reached 24.6 g/L. This work demonstrates the tremendous application value of metabolomics analysis for the development of industrial recombinant strains and the optimization of fermentation conditions. Duplex stainless steel is a unique material for cast products, the use of which is possible in various fields. With the same chemical composition, melting, casting and heat treatment technology, pitting and crevice corrosion were observed at the interphase boundaries of non-metallic inclusions and the steel matrix. To increase the cleanliness of steel, it is necessary to carefully select the technology for deoxidizing with titanium or aluminum, as the most common deoxidizers, and the technology for modifying with rare earth metals. In this work, a comprehensive analysis of the thermodynamic data in the literature on the behavior of oxides and sulfides in this highly alloyed system under consideration was performed. Based on this analysis, a thermodynamic model was developed to describe their behavior in liquid and solidified duplex stainless steels. The critical concentrations at which the existence of certain phases is possible during the deoxidation of DSS with titanium, aluminum and modification by rare earth metals, including the simultaneous contribution of lanthanum and cerium, was determined. Experimental ingots were produced, the cleanliness of experimental steels was assessed, and the key metric parameters of non-metallic inclusions were described. In steels deoxidized using titanium, clusters of inclusions with a diameter of 84 microns with a volume fraction of 0.066% were formed, the volume fraction of which was decreased to 0.01% with the subsequent addition of aluminum. The clusters completely disappeared when REMs were added. The reason for this behavior of inclusions was interpreted using thermodynamic modeling and explained by the difference in temperature at which specific types of NMIs begin to form. A comparison of experimental and calculated results showed that the proposed model adequately describes the process of formation of non-metallic inclusions in the steel under consideration and can be used for the development of industrial technology. With rapid infrastructure development worldwide, the generation of industrial solid waste (ISW) has substantially increased, causing resource wastage and environmental pollution. Meanwhile, tunnel engineering requires large quantities of grouting material for ground treatment and consolidation. Using ISW as a component in tunnel grouts provides a sustainable solution to both issues. This paper presented a comprehensive review of the recent advancements in tunnel grouting materials using ISW, focusing on their feasibility, mechanical characteristics, and future development directions. Initially, the concept and classification of ISW were introduced, examining its feasibility and advantages as grouting materials in tunnels. Subsequently, various performances of ISW in tunnel grouting materials were summarized to explore the factors influencing mechanical strength, fluidity, durability, and microstructure characteristics. Simultaneously, this review analyzed current research trends and outlines future development directions. Major challenges, including quality assurance, environmental risks, and lack of standardized specifications, are discussed. Future research directions, including multifunctional grouts, integrated waste utilization, and advanced characterization techniques, are suggested to further advance this field. With the rapid development of industrial digitalization and intelligence, there is an urgent need to accurately depict the physical world in digital space, and, in turn, regulate and optimize the behavior of physical entities based on massive data collection and analysis. As a technology that combines virtual space and physical space, digital twin can satisfy all of the above needs, and has attracted widespread attention. Due to the promising application prospects of digital twins, both academia and industry have launched research in this field, and related studies have been conducted from different perspectives. Accordingly, some articles summarizing the existing work have also been published, but they are all from a single perspective, lacking a systematic introduction and summary. Based on this, this paper conducts a comprehensive review of the existing work on digital twins from four perspectives: data, model, network and application, and strives to gain a better understanding of the development of the field from the physical to the virtual and back to the physical. In the realm of Industry 4.0, diverse technologies such as AI, Cyber-Physical Systems, IoT, and advanced sensors converge to shape smarter future factories. Mobile manipulators (MMs) are pivotal, fostering flexibility, adaptability, and collaboration in industrial processes. On one hand, MMs offer a remarkable level of flexibility, adaptability, and collaboration in industrial processes, facilitating swift production line changes and efficiency enhancements. On the other hand, their integration into real manufacturing environments requires meticulous considerations, such as safety, human–robot interaction, and cybersecurity. This article delves into MMs' essential role in achieving Industry 4.0's automation and adaptability by integrating mobility with manipulation capabilities. The study reviews MMs' industrial applications and integration into manufacturing systems. The most observed applications are logistics (49%) and manufacturing (33%). As Industry 4.0 advances, the paper emphasizes updating and aligning MMs with the smart factory concept by networks of sensors and the real-time analysis of them, especially for an enhanced human–robot interaction. Another objective is categorizing considerations for MMs' utilization in Industry 4.0-aligned manufacturing. This review methodically covers a wide range of considerations and evaluates existing solutions. It shows a more comprehensive approach to understanding MMs in Industry 4.0 than previous works. Key focus areas encompass perception, data analysis, connectivity, human–robot interaction, safety, virtualization, and cybersecurity. By bringing together different aspects, this research emphasizes a more integrated view of the role and challenges of MMs in the Industry 4.0 paradigm and provides insights into aspects often overlooked. A detailed and synthetic analysis of existing knowledge was performed, and insights into their future path in Industry 4.0 environments were provided as part of the contributions of this paper. The article also appraises initiatives in these domains, along with a succinct technology readiness analysis. The environmental impact of industrial development has been well-documented. The use of physical and chemical methods in industrial development has negative consequences for the environment, raising concerns about the sustainability of this approach. There is a growing need for advanced technologies that are compatible with preserving the environment. The use of fungi products for nanoparticle (NP) synthesis is a promising approach that has the potential to meet this need. The genus Trichoderma is a non-pathogenic filamentous fungus with a high degree of genetic diversity. Different strains of this genus have a variety of important environmental, agricultural, and industrial applications. Species of Trichoderma can be used to synthesize metallic NPs using a biological method that is environmentally friendly, low cost, energy saving, and non-toxic. In this review, we provide an overview of the role of Trichoderma metabolism in the synthesis of metallic NPs. We discuss the different metabolic pathways involved in NP synthesis, as well as the role of metabolic metabolites in stabilizing NPs and promoting their synergistic effects. In addition, the future perspective of NPs synthesized by extracts of Trichoderma is discussed, as well as their potential applications in biomedicine, agriculture, and environmental health. Nowadays, since the air pollution problem is becoming global and denitrification is efficient to control nitrogen oxides, research and development of burners with low pollutant emissions in industries are urgent and necessary due to the increasingly severe environmental requirements. Based on the advanced CFD (computational fluid dynamics) numerical analysis technique, this work focuses on developing an industrial denitration-used burner, aiming to decrease the emission of nitrogen oxides. A burner with multiple ejectors is proposed, and the gas premixing and combustion process in the burner are systematically studied. Firstly, for the ejector, the well-known orthogonal experiment method is adopted to reveal the premixing performance under different structural parameters. Results show that the angle and number of swirl blades have significant effects on the C O mixing uniformity. The C O mixing uniformity first decreases and then increases with thr rising swirl blade angle, and it enhances with more swirl blades. Through comparison, a preferred ejector is determined with optimal structure parameters including the nozzle diameter of 75 mm, the ejector suction chamber diameter of 290 mm, the blade swirl angle of 45 ∘ , and the swirl blade number 16. And then, the burners installed with the confirmed ejector and two types of flues, i.e., a cylindrical and a rectangular one, are simulated and compared. The effects of ejector arrangements on the temperature distributions at the burner outlet are analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. It is found that the temperature variances at the outlets of R 2 and C 1 are the smallest, respectively, 13.12 and 23.69 , representing the optimal temperature uniformity under each type. Finally, the burner of the R2 arrangement is verified with a satisfied premixing performance and combustion temperature uniformity, meeting the denitration demands in the industry. The use of microorganisms in industry has enabled the (over)production of various compounds (e.g., primary and secondary metabolites, proteins and enzymes) that are relevant for the production of antibiotics, food, beverages, cosmetics, chemicals and biofuels, among others. Industrial strains are commonly obtained by conventional (non-GMO) strain improvement strategies and random screening and selection. However, recombinant DNA technology has made it possible to improve microbial strains by adding, deleting or modifying specific genes. Techniques such as genetic engineering and genome editing are contributing to the development of industrial production strains. Nevertheless, there is still significant room for further strain improvement. In this review, we will focus on classical and recent methods, tools and technologies used for the development of fungal production strains with the potential to be applied at an industrial scale. Additionally, the use of functional genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics together with the implementation of genetic manipulation techniques and expression tools will be discussed. The development of the tertiary industry is of great significance for promoting industrial structure, optimizing and upgrading it, and achieving regional energy conservation and emission reduction goals. This study adopts a quantitative method to analyze the spatio-temporal pattern of carbon emissions from China's tertiary industry from 2004 to 2019. In order to analyze emissions from aspects such as energy structure, energy intensity, energy carrying capacity, industrial structure, level of industrial development, income level, consumption capacity, energy consumption intensity, and population size, this study establishes a hybrid factor decomposition model called the "energy-industry-consumption" research framework. The study shows that carbon emissions from China's tertiary industry have been increasing year by year from 2004 to 2019, with a growth rate of 353.10%. Transportation is the largest contributor to the increase in carbon emissions from China's tertiary industry. The carbon emissions from the tertiary industry in each province show four types: high-speed growth, low-speed growth, fluctuating growth, and stable growth. During the study period, carbon emissions produce a spatial heterogeneity with the highest emissions in the south and lowest in the northwestern part of China. The spatial pattern of per capita carbon emissions is not significant. Guangdong has the highest carbon emissions, and Shanghai and Beijing have higher per capita carbon emissions. Industrial factors and consumption factors have a positive effect on carbon emissions in China's tertiary industry, while energy factors have a negative effect. Due to increasingly strong and varied performance requirements, cooperative wireless communication systems today occupy a prominent place in both academic research and industrial development. The technological and economic challenges for future sixth-generation (6G) wireless systems are considerable, with the objectives of improving coverage, data rate, latency, reliability, mobile connectivity and energy efficiency. Over the past decade, new technologies have emerged, such as massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS), unmanned aerial vehicular (UAV)-assisted communications, dual-polarized (DP) antenna arrays, three dimensional (3D) polarized channel modeling, and millimeter-wave (mmW) communication. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of tensor-based MIMO cooperative communication systems. Indeed, during the last two decades, tensors have been the subject of many applications in signal processing, especially for digital communications, and more broadly for big data processing. After a brief reminder of basic tensor operations and decompositions, we present the main characteristics allowing to classify cooperative systems, illustrated by means of different architectures. A review of main codings used for cooperative systems is provided before a didactic and comprehensive presentation of two-hop systems, highlighting different tensor models. In a companion paper currently in preparation, we will show how these tensor models can be exploited to develop semi-blind receivers to jointly estimate transmitted information symbols and communication channels. This paper presents the relationship between the factors of the industrialization of oil and gas scientific and technological achievements. These have established the internal coupling model and the external coupling model among the factors of the industrialization of oil and gas scientific and technological achievements. As revealed in the process of the industrialization of oil and gas scientific and technological achievements, there is a mutual influence between the factors. The actual data is used to simulate the internal coupling and the coupling between the factors of the industrialization of oil and gas scientific and technological achievements. The results show that the degree of the internal coupling and the coupling between the factors changes from coupling dissonance to a coordination state, indicating that the coupling of the factors of the industrialization of oil and gas scientific and technological achievements are enhanced. Results are presented the degree of internal coupling and coupling coordination of each factor basically changed from coupling dissonance to coordination state, indicating that the coupling of the elements in the industrialization of oil and gas scientific and technological achievements is synergistic. Given a smooth-plane Jordan curve with bounded absolute curvature κ > 0 , we determine equivalence classes of distinctive disks of radius 1 / κ included in both plane regions separated by the curve. The bound on absolute curvature leads to a completely symmetric trajectory behaviour with respect to the curve turning. These lead to a decomposition of the plane into a finite number of maximal regions with respect to set inclusion leading to natural lower bounds for the length an area enclosed by the curve. We present a "half version" of the Pestov–Ionin theorem, and subsequently a generalisation of the classical Blaschke rolling disk theorem. An interesting consequence is that we describe geometric conditions relying exclusively on curvature and independent of any kind of convexity that allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of families of rolling disks for planar domains that are not necessarily convex. We expect this approach would lead to further generalisations as, for example, characterising volumetric objects in closed surfaces as first studied by Lagunov. Although this is a classical problem in differential geometry, recent developments in industrial manufacturing when cutting along some prescribed shapes on prescribed materials have revived the necessity of a deeper understanding on disks enclosed by sufficiently smooth Jordan curves. Japan is often surrounded by the myth of featuring a unique "love for nature", and its traditional culture and lifestyle as having been "in harmony with nature" before it was corrupted by modernization and Westernization. In this paper, I employ three examples to delineate images of nature in different times of Japanese history and point out the discrepancy between discourse on nature and physical engagement with nature. I argue that the environmental destruction that peaked in the Meiji period (1868–1912) is not primarily derived from a new, dualistic Euro-American understanding of nature. Rather, I demonstrate that environmental harm was already inherent in premodern Japan and was reconcilable with the respective concepts of nature. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are biopolyesters regarded as an attractive alternative to petroleum-derived plastics. Nitrogen limitation and phosphate limitation in glucose cultivations were evaluated for poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB)) production by Halomonas elongata 1H9T, a moderate halophilic strain. Co-production of P(3HB) and gluconic acid was observed in fed-batch glucose cultivations under nitrogen limiting conditions. A maximum P(3HB) accumulation of 53.0% (w/w) and a maximum co-production of 133 g/L of gluconic acid were attained. Fed-batch glucose cultivation under phosphate limiting conditions resulted in a P(3HB) accumulation of only 33.3% (w/w) and no gluconic acid production. As gluconic acid is a valuable organic acid with extensive applications in several industries, this work presents an interesting approach for the future development of an industrial process aiming at the co-production of an intracellular biopolymer, P(3HB), and a value-added extracellular product, gluconic acid. With the development of industrial automation, articulated robots have gradually replaced labor in the field of bolt installation. Although the installation efficiency has been improved, installation defects may still occur. Bolt installation defects can considerably affect the mechanical properties of structures and even lead to safety accidents. Therefore, in order to ensure the success rate of bolt assembly, an efficient and timely detection method of incorrect or missing assembly is needed. At present, the automatic detection of bolt installation defects mainly depends on a single type of sensor, which is prone to mis-inspection. Visual sensors can identify the incorrect or missing installation of bolts, but it cannot detect torque defects. Torque sensors can only be judged according to the torque and angel information, but cannot accurately identify the incorrect or missing installation of bolts. To solve this problem, a detection method of bolt installation defects based on multiple sensors is proposed. The trained YOLO (You Only Look Once) v3 network is used to judge the images collected by the visual sensor, and the recognition rate of visual detection is up to 99.75%, and the average confidence of the output is 0.947. The detection speed is 48 FPS, which meets the real-time requirement. At the same time, torque and angle sensors are used to judge the torque defects and whether bolts have slipped. Combined with the multi-sensor judgment results, this method can effectively identify defects such as missing bolts and sliding teeth. Finally, this paper carried out experiments to identify bolt installation defects such as incorrect, missing torque defects, and bolt slips. At this time, the traditional detection method based on a single type of sensor cannot be effectively identified, and the detection method based on multiple sensors can be accurately identified. Beta zeolite, a crystal material with a three-dimensional twelve-ring cross-channel structure, has many advantages, such as high Brønsted acid concentration, high Si/Al ratio, thermal/hydrothermal stability, and large surface area. Due to these advantages, beta zeolite shows excellent catalytic performance in petroleum refining and petrochemical processes. However, traditionally microporous beta zeolite has strong steric hindrance and diffusion restrictions, which hinder large molecules from passing through its internal channels. In addition, carbon deposition occurs, resulting in catalyst deactivation. The main strategy to solve this problem is to prepare nanosized or hierarchical beta zeolites, which allow for large molecule conversion and shortening diffusion pathways. Therefore, researchers have explored different synthesis strategies to prepare beta zeolite with different particle sizes and porosities to obtain better zeolite catalysts. This paper briefly describes the recent research progress in the preparation of nanosized and hierarchical beta zeolite. Additionally, the mechanisms of various preparation methods, structural characteristics, and applications of the materials are introduced in detail. Furthermore, the main problems existing in its industrial application are describing by comparing the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods to prepare optimally nanosized and hierarchical zeolite to meet the requirements of industrial development. Aluminum alloys have been extensively used as heatproof and heat-dissipation components in automotive and communication industries, and the demand for aluminum alloys with higher thermal conductivity is increasing. Therefore, this review focuses on the thermal conductivity of aluminum alloys. First, we formulate the theory of thermal conduction of metals and effective medium theory, and then analyze the effect of alloying elements, secondary phases, and temperature on the thermal conductivity of aluminum alloys. Alloying elements are the most crucial factor, whose species, existing states, and mutual interactions significantly affect the thermal conductivity of aluminum. Alloying elements in a solid solution weaken the thermal conductivity of aluminum more dramatically than those in the precipitated state. The characteristics and morphology of secondary phases also affect thermal conductivity. Temperature also affects thermal conductivity by influencing the thermal conduction of electrons and phonons in aluminum alloys. Furthermore, recent studies on the effects of casting, heat treatment, and AM processes on the thermal conductivity of aluminum alloys are summarized, in which processes mainly affect thermal conductivity by varying existing states of alloying elements and the morphology of secondary phases. The development of prognostics and health management solutions in the manufacturing industry has lagged behind academic advances due to a number of practical challenges. This work proposes a framework for the initial development of industrial PHM solutions that is based on the system development life cycle commonly used for software-based applications. Methodologies for completing the planning and design stages, which are critical for industrial solutions, are presented. Two challenges that are inherent to health modeling in manufacturing environments, data quality and modeling systems that experience trend-based degradation, are then identified and methods to overcome them are proposed. Additionally included is a case study documenting the development of an industrial PHM solution for a hyper compressor at a manufacturing facility operated by The Dow Chemical Company. Background: Delivery of inhalable nanoparticles through metered-dose inhalers (MDI) is a promising approach to treat lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nanocoating of the inhalable nanoparticles helps in stability and cellular uptake enhancement but complicates the production process. Thus, it is meaningful to accelerate the translation process of MDI encapsulating inhalable nanoparticles with nanocoating structure. Methods: In this study, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) are selected as a model inhalable nanoparticle system. An established reverse microemulsion strategy was utilized to explore the industrialization potential of SLN-based MDI. Three categories of nanocoating with the functions of stabilization (by Poloxamer 188, encoded as SLN(0)), cellular uptake enhancement (by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, encoded as SLN(+)), and targetability (by hyaluronic acid, encoded as SLN(−)) were constructed upon SLN, whose particle size distribution and zeta-potential were characterized. Subsequently, SLN were loaded into MDI, and evaluated for the processing reliability, physicochemical nature, formulation stability, and biocompatibility. Results: The results elucidated that three types of SLN-based MDI were successfully fabricated with good reproducibility and stability. Regarding safety, SLN(0) and SLN(−) showed negligible cytotoxicity on cellular level. Stress and disease are critical factors hindering the industrial development of red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Breeding crayfish with stress- and disease-resistant characteristics can overcome these limitations and promote their industrial development. In this study, the crayfish breed F3, which exhibits rapid growth and a favoured haplotype combination of the immune genes R, ALF, and crustin2, encoding the Toll-like receptor, anti-lipopolysaccharide factor, and antimicrobial peptide, respectively, were selected as parents to breed offspring (the selected group (SG)). The genotype, stress resistance, and disease resistance of crayfish in the SG and unselected group (USG) were compared. The results showed that the ratio of the favoured haplotype was higher in the SG crayfish than in the USG crayfish, leading to stronger stress and disease resistance. Compared to that of the USG crayfish, the mortality of the SG crayfish subjected to stress during eight days of transport and challenged with bacteria (Aeromonas hydrophila or Vibrio parahaemolyticus) or white spot syndrome virus were significantly reduced by 60% and 20%, respectively (p < 0.05). Based on these results, the stress- and disease-resistant SG crayfish were named the "Huachizhen-1" breed. Additionally, the ratio of the unfavoured homozygous genotypes of R, ALF, and crustin2 sharply decreased, whereas those of the heterozygous genotypes increased together with stress and disease resistance during crayfish maturation under natural conditions, indicating that the heterozygotes of these genes also exhibit strong stress and disease resistance. Agricultural industries are the foundation of the modernization of agricultural and rural areas in China. National Modern Agricultural Industrial Parks (NMAIPs) provides a considerable nationwide platform for agricultural industries. We take 200 NMAIPs in China as objects. Through spatial analysis, the Herfindahl–Hirschman index, and the SBM-DEA model, we analyzed the development characteristics and regional differences of NMAIPs from the muti-level perspective of national planning, provincial coordination, and county implementation to propose policy recommendations aimed at sustainable and high-quality development. The results are as follows: (1) Regarding geospatial characteristics, NMAIPs are unevenly distributed, with a decreasing gradient from east to west. The direction is east (northward) to west (southward), consistent with the direction of the Hu line. The distribution density shows that the east is dense and the west is sparse. (2) For industrial concentration, the leading industries in NMAIPs tend to be homogenous. The HHI indicates that the homogenization of leading industries is widely represented in each province. The low oligopolistic areas are in the central and eastern regions of China, while the highly oligopolistic locations are in the western and northeastern provinces. (3) In inputs–outputs efficiency, the comprehensive technical efficiency is high but not optimal, while the distribution of values is high in the south and low in the north. Ten provinces are non-effective. According to inputs and outputs, the ineffective contribution of population of townships covered, occupied area and the capital from the collective economy are development barriers, and the high output value of NMAIPs cannot fully drive the employment and income of farmers. Further improvements are needed in terms of both pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency, and adjustments to scale operations should be in response to different returns to scale. Our research results provide policy recommendations for NMAIPs, including the establishment of a multi-level management mechanism, balancing regional development, diversifying and coordinating regional leading industries, and improving the efficiency of utilization factors. Accuracy becomes progressively important in the wake of development in advanced industrial equipment. A key position sensor to such a quest is the optical linear encoder. Occasionally, inappropriate mounting can cause errors greater than the accuracy grade of the optical linear encoder itself, especially for open-type optical linear encoders, where the mounting distance between the reading head and main scale must be accurately controlled. This paper analyzes the diffraction fields of a traditional scanning reticle made by amplitude grating and a newly designed combined grating; the latter shows a more stable phase in mathematical calculation and simulations. The proposed combined gratings are fabricated in a laboratory and assembled into the reading heads. The global economy is moving into a new era characterized by digital and green development. To examine the impact of digital industrialization development on the energy supply chain, in relation to the sustainable development of China's energy security, we discuss the nonlinear impact and transmission mechanism of digital industrialization on the supply chain of the energy industry using a panel threshold regression model based on sample data on the development of the provincial natural gas industry in China from 2006 to 2020. We found that there are multiple threshold effects of digital industrialization level development on energy supply chain length, and the results are statistically significant, i.e., digital industrialization development positively contributes to natural gas supply chain length after digital industrialization is raised to or crosses the critical threshold. Meanwhile, the heterogeneity analysis results show that there are differences in the impact of digital industrialization on the energy supply chain from sub-sectors, regional development differences, and different development periods. Therefore, we provide some factual support and experience for achieving the construction goal of "Digital China" and accelerating the digital reform of the energy supply chain as well as transforming and upgrading the economic structure. Replacing in vivo with in vitro studies can increase sustainability in the development of medicines. This principle has already been applied in the biowaiver approach based on the biopharmaceutical classification system, BCS. A biowaiver is a regulatory process in which a drug is approved based on evidence of in vitro equivalence, i.e., a dissolution test, rather than on in vivo bioequivalence. Currently biowaivers can only be granted for highly water-soluble drugs, i.e., BCS class I/III drugs. When evaluating poorly soluble drugs, i.e., BCS class II/IV drugs, in vitro dissolution testing has proved to be inadequate for predicting in vivo drug performance due to the lack of permeability interpretation. The aim of this review was to provide solid proofs that at least two commercially available cell-free in vitro assays, namely, the parallel artificial membrane permeability assay, PAMPA, and the PermeaPad® assay, PermeaPad, in different formats and set-ups, have the potential to reduce and replace in vivo testing to some extent, thus increasing sustainability in drug development. Based on the literature review presented here, we suggest that these assays should be implemented as alternatives to (1) more energy-intense in vitro methods, e.g., refining/replacing cell-based permeability assays, and (2) in vivo studies, e.g., reducing the number of pharmacokinetic studies conducted on animals and humans. In Chile, the concept of sacrifice zones corresponds to those land surfaces in which industrial development was prioritized over the environmental impact that it caused. A high number of industries that emit pollutants into the environment are concentrated in these zones. This paper studies the atmospheric component of the Environmental Impact Declaration and Assessment's (EID and EIA, respectively) environmental assessment instruments of the thermoelectric power plants in northern Chile, based on their consistency with current environmental quality regulations. We specify concepts on air quality, atmospheric emission regulations, and the critical parameters and factors to be considered when carrying out an environmental impact assessment. Finally, we end by presenting possible alternatives to replace the current methodologies and criteria for atmospheric regulation in areas identified as saturated or of environmental sacrifice, with an emphasis on both population health and an environmental approach. Under the background of "dual carbon", the coupled power generation of agricultural and forestry biomass (AFB) and coal, as a new path of coal-power transformation, is key to achieving energy conservation and reducing emissions in the power sector. Timely and effective government subsidies as well as regulation policies will play important roles in the development of the coupled power generation industry. Previous studies usually assumed government policy as singular and static, rarely considering the dynamic changes in government policies. In this study, evolutionary game theory and systematic dynamics research methods were combined. The game relationship and the dynamic evolution process of the behavioral strategies of both sides are analyzed through the construction of a mixed-strategies game model of the government and power plants. A system dynamics model is built for simulations based on the results of the dynamic game evolution, and the influence paths of key factors on the behavioral strategies of the government and power plants were further demonstrated. The results indicated the following: (1) The behavioral strategies of the government and power plants were not stable for a long period of time, but fluctuated during their mutual influence. The dynamic policies and measures formulated by the government according to changes in the behavioral strategies of power plants will promote industrial development more effectively. (2) Increasing subsidization and the strengthening of supervision caused by government policy can increase the enthusiasm of power plants to choose the coupled power generation of AFB and coal. (3) If the government improves the benefits or reduces the transformation costs caused by coupled power generation the industry will be fundamentally improved. The results clearly show the interactions as well as adjustment processes of the behavioral strategies of power plants and the government in the coupled power generation industry of AFB and coal, and the specific effects of key factors on the behavioral strategies of power plants and the government were investigated. This study can provide a theoretical basis for the government to formulate reasonable industrial policies and measures for the coupled power generation of AFB and coal, in addition to being a valuable reference for other countries to develop a coupled power generation industry. The Jakarta metropolitan region (the Jakarta megacity), located in the fourth most populous country in the world (Indonesia), is the largest urban agglomeration in the Global South—continues to grow, especially in its outer suburbs (Bekasi Regency). The governments (Central and Local) tend to implement an urban-biased policy (UBP) to connect Bekasi Regency into global production networks and boost Bekasi Regency's income. However, previous case studies of China and Vietnam have revealed that the UBP increases economic disparities between urban and rural areas. Therefore, this study probes urban–rural economic disparities and their characteristics at a microregional level (desa/kelurahan) in the Bekasi Regency. The methods applied in this study are geographically weighted regression (GWR), RULT index, and quantitative zoning. The results show that almost all desa/kelurahan in the high poverty (HPv) cluster are rural neighborhoods (desa/kelurahan with rural characteristics). By contrast, only 5% of desa/kelurahan with urban characteristics are HPvs, while the remainder are in the low poverty (LPv) cluster. Rural neighborhoods with HPv tend to have a high percentage of households dependent on agriculture. Thus, empirical results (with a case of a Global South megacity suburb) further support previous evidence that the UBP has caused urban–rural economic disparities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-healing materials have attracted great interest in recent years. Particularly, the use of thermoset/thermoplastics blends has emerged as a good option with relatively low activation temperatures and potential infinite healing cycles. Nevertheless, a methodical study of healing conditions and evaluation is still required for further industrial development. The effect of activation temperature and crack morphology in polycaprolactone (PCL)/epoxy blends are explored. For this purpose, PCL content was varied (5, 10, and 15 wt %) with contents lower than critical composition. Therefore, the morphology of all studied blends is the epoxy matrix with a separated PCL phase. In this sense, an increase in PCL content leads to a reduction in the Tg, due to the partial PCL miscibility, and the presence of larger PCL domains. It was observed that a higher temperature (150 °C) and PCL content led to a more efficient self-healing process because of both the lower viscosity of the melted PCL at higher temperatures and the presence of larger PCL reservoirs when increasing the PCL content. Crack morphology influence was studied by inducing cracks with different tools: a custom crack machine with a cutting blade, a scalpel, and a pin. The results show that the recovery was better when the cracks were smaller and shallower, that is, with the pin. In addition, the healing efficiency by means of both parameters, crack volume and depth change, showed more similar results in slimmer cracks, due to a lower crack width-to-depth ratio. As industrial development increases, electric machine systems are more widely used in industrial production. Rolling bearings play a key role in machine systems and so the prevention of faults in rolling bearings is more important than ever before. Recently, with the development of artificial intelligence, neural networks have been used to monitor the remaining useful life of rolling bearings. However, there are two problems with this technique. First, a network trained by data for a single operating condition (source domain) cannot predict the remaining useful life of bearings under a different operating condition (target domain), such as a different load or speed. Second, a large number of labeled data are needed for network training, but the acquisition of labeled data for different operating conditions is a challenging task. To address these problems, this paper proposes a domain-adaptive adversarial network, in which a transfer learning strategy and maximum mean discrepancy algorithm are used for network optimization, so that remaining useful life can be predicted without labeled data in target domain training. Our results confirm that a model trained by source domain data alone cannot predict the remaining useful life of bearings under different conditions, but the domain-adaptive adversarial network can accurately predict remaining useful life for varying operating conditions. Τhe large amounts of information produced daily by organizations and enterprises have led to the development of specialized software that can process high volumes of data. Given that the technologies and methodologies used to develop software are constantly changing, offering significant market opportunities, organizations turn to patenting their inventions to secure their ownership as well as their commercial exploitation. In this study, we investigate the landscape of data-oriented software development via the collection and analysis of information extracted from patents. To this regard, we made use of advanced statistical and machine learning approaches, namely Latent Dirichlet Allocation and Brokerage Analysis for the identification of technological trends and thematic axes related to software development patent activity dedicated to data processing and data management processes. Our findings reveal that high-profile countries and organizations are engaging in patent granting, while the main thematic circles found in the retrieved patent data revolve around data updates, integration, version control and software deployment. The results indicate that patent grants in this technological domain are expected to continue their increasing trend in the following years, given that technologies evolve and the need for efficient data processing becomes even more present. Determining the nutrient requirements of industrial hemp to increase the yield requires quantifying variations in soil nutrients and enzyme activities in different growth stages, along with relevant soil microbial response. This study investigated the effects of different growth stages of industrial hemp on rhizosphere soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. The results showed that with the increase in the growth stages, the pH and available phosphorus (AP) decreased, while the soil organic matter (SOM), available nitrogen (AN), and available potassium (AK) increased substantially, indicating that the demand for nutrients of industrial hemp was constantly changing. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota were found to be the keystone taxa to adapt to the nutrient requirements of industrial hemp at different growth stages by regulating soil enzyme activity. Furthermore, using the redundancy analysis and Spearman's correlation analysis, we found that microbial taxonomic composition was related to the variations in AN, AP, and pH. In general, we emphasized that the interaction between industrial hemp and soil is closely related to the growth stage, which increases plant adaptability and growth because of the change of soil microorganisms. Recently, the Cu-based catalyst has attracted wide attention for the hydrogenation of dimethyl oxalate (DMO) to ethylene glycol (EG) due to its high catalytic activity and it is low cost. However, its poor stability, ease of agglomeration, and the short life of the catalyst restrict its further development in industrial applications. Here, we constructed a novel MOF-derived Cu/SiO2 catalyst (MOF-CmS for short) with a controllable distribution of Cu active sites for the hydrogenation of the DMO to EG reaction. The catalyst was prepared by a hydrothermal method with the HKUST-1 uniformly coated on the surface of the silica microspheres. After the calcination, the highly dispersed and uniform Cu species were loaded on the surface of the silica. The resulted MOF-CmS catalyst showed a 100% conversion of DMO and over 98% selectivity of EG at 200 °C and 2 MPa while a traditional Cu/SiO2 catalyst exhibited serious agglomeration of Cu active sites and low catalytic activity (DMO conversion of 86.9% and EG selectivity of 46.6%). It is believed that the highly dispersed active metal center and the interaction between the active metal and carrier were the main reasons for higher catalytic activity of the MOF-CmS catalyst. Industrial development cannot be separated from policy guidance and support. Scientific evaluation and analysis of wind power industrial policies can promote the sustainable and healthy development of the industry, which has great significance to accelerate the green and low-carbon transformation of energy and achieve the double carbon target. In this paper, based on 66 wind power industrial policies from 2010 to 2021 in China, the policy texts were coded and classified into policy tools. By combining the text mining technology with the Policy Modeling Consistency (PMC) index model, 10 groups of evaluation index systems were established to evaluate the industrial policies quantitatively. The results show that the use of the three types of policy tools is unbalanced. Among them, environmental policy tools are used most frequently while supply and demand policy tools are relatively few. According to the PMC score, the overall situation of wind power industrial policy has certain scientific qualities. However, there are few policy texts for ordinary residents in terms of policy recipients, and there are shortcomings in technical support and talent construction. Quality grading in antler mushroom industrial production is a labor-intensive operation. For a long time, manual grading has been used for grading, which produces various problems such as insufficient reliability, low production efficiency, and high mushroom body damage. Automatic grading is a problem to be solved urgently for antler mushroom industrial development with increasing labor costs. To solve the problem, this paper deeply integrates the single-stage object detection of YOLOv5 and the semantic segmentation of PSPNet, and proposes a Y-PNet model for real-time object detection and an image segmentation network. This article also proposes an evaluation model for antler mushroom's size, which eliminates subjective judgment and achieves quality grading. Moreover, to meet the needs of efficient and accurate hierarchical detection in the factory, this study uses the lightweight network model to construct a lightweight YOLOv5 single-stage object detection model. The MobileNetV3 network model embedded with a CBAM module is used as the backbone extractor in PSPNet to reduce the model's size and improve the model's efficiency and accuracy for segmentation. Lack of archaeological and whole-genome diversity data has restricted current knowledge of the evolutionary history of donkeys. With the advancement of science and technology, the discovery of archaeological evidence, the development of molecular genetics, and the improvement of whole-genome sequencing technology, the in-depth understanding of the origin and domestication of donkeys has been enhanced, however. Given the lack of systematic research, the present study carefully screened and collected multiple academic papers and books, journals, and literature on donkeys over the past 15 years. The origin and domestication of donkeys are reviewed in this paper from the aspects of basic information, cultural origin, bioarcheology, mitochondrial and chromosomal microsatellite sequences, and whole-genome sequence comparison. It also highlights and reviews genome assembly technology, by assembling the genome of an individual organism and comparing it with related sample genomes, which can be used to produce more accurate results through big data statistics, analysis, and computational correlation models. Background: The donkey industry in the world and especially in China is developing rapidly, and donkey farming is transforming gradually from the family farming model to large-scale, intensive, and integrated industrial operations, which could ensure the stability of product quality and quantity. However, theoretical research on donkey breeding and its technical development lags far behind that of other livestock, thereby limiting its industrial development. This review provides holistic information for the donkey industry and researchers, that could promote theoretical research, genomic selection (GS), and reproductive management of the donkey population. With the development of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), industrial wireless sensors need to upload the collected private data to the cloud servers, resulting in a large amount of private data being exposed on the Internet. Private data are vulnerable to hacking. Many complex wireless-sensor-authentication protocols have been proposed. In this paper, we proposed an efficient authentication protocol for IIoT-oriented wireless sensor networks. The protocol introduces the PUF chip, and uses the Bloom filter to save and query the challenge–response pairs generated by the PUF chip. It ensures the security of the physical layer of the device and reduces the computing cost and communication cost of the wireless sensor side. The protocol introduces a pre-authentication mechanism to achieve continuous authentication between the gateway and the cloud server. The overall computational cost of the protocol is reduced. Formal security analysis and informal security analysis proved that our proposed protocol has more security features. We implemented various security primitives using the MIRACL cryptographic library and GMP large number library. Our proposed protocol was compared in-depth with related work. Detailed experiments show that our proposed protocol significantly reduces the computational cost and communication cost on the wireless sensor side and the overall computational cost of the protocol. α-Aminonitriles, which have anticancer, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, have played an important role in pharmacology. Furthermore, they can also be used to synthesize natural and unnatural amino acids. The main bottleneck in the commercialization of these products is their large-scale production with controlled chirality. A variety of methods have been used to synthesize α-aminonitriles. Among other reported methods for preparing α-aminonitriles, the Strecker reaction is considered appropriate. Recent developments, however, have enabled the α-cyanation of tertiary and secondary amines by functionalizing the carbon–hydrogen (C–H) bond as an attractive alternative procedure for the preparation of α-aminonitriles in the presence of an oxidant and a cyanide source. In most cases, these reactions are catalyzed by transition metal catalysts, such as Fe, Cu, Rh, V, Au, Ru, Mo, Pt, Re, and Co, or by photocatalysts. As an alternative, organocatalysts can also be used to produce aminonitriles. Although there have been numerous reviews on the preparation of α-aminonitriles, no such reviews have been published specifically on the organocatalyzed synthesis of α-aminonitriles. Organocatalysis plays a significant role in synthesizing α-aminonitriles via Strecker-type reactions and cross dehydrogenative coupling reactions (CDC). In this mini review, we discuss the organocatalyzed synthesis of these molecules. Elucidation of the intrinsic catalytic principle of iron carbides remains a substantial challenge in iron-catalyzed Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), due to possible interference from other Fe-containing species. Here, we propose a facile approach to synthesize single-phase θ-Fe3C via the pyrolysis of a molecularly defined Fe-C complex (Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3), thus affording close examination of its catalytic behavior during FTS. The crystal structure of prepared θ-Fe3C is unambiguously verified by combined XRD and MES measurement, demonstrating its single-phase nature. Strikingly, single-phase θ-Fe3C exhibited excellent selectivity to light olefins (77.8%) in the C2-C4 hydrocarbons with less than 10% CO2 formation in typical FTS conditions. This strategy further succeeds with promotion of Mn, evident for its wide-ranging compatibility for the promising industrial development of catalysts. Light-driven synthetic biology refers to an autotrophic microorganisms-based research platform that remodels microbial metabolism through synthetic biology and directly converts light energy into bio-based chemicals. This technology can help achieve the goal of carbon neutrality while promoting green production. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms that use light and CO2 for growth and production. They thus possess unique advantages as "autotrophic cell factories". Various fuels and chemicals have been synthesized by cyanobacteria, indicating their important roles in research and industrial application. This review summarized the progresses and remaining challenges in light-driven cyanobacterial cell factory. Industrialization, natural processes, and urbanization have potentially accelerated the pace and the level of heavy metals (HMs) in soil and underground water. These HMs may be accumulated in plants and animals when they take up such contaminated water, and then make their way into human food chains. Several remediation technologies have been employed to take up HMs. Diverse conventional means such as ion exchange, electrolytic technologies, and chemical extraction have been employed in the past, but the majority of these techniques are not economical for extensive projects and they need stringent control and continuous monitoring. These technologies also have low efficiency for effective removal of HMs. In this context, algae offer an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative for remediation of HMs from polluted water. The accumulation of HMs by macro and microalgae is advantageous for phycoremediation compared to other approaches that are not economical and not environmentally friendly. So, there is an urgent necessity to refine the chances of accumulation of HMs in algae, employing the techniques of genetic engineering to create transgenic species for over-expressing metallothioneins and phytochelatins, which may form complexes with HMs and store them in vacuoles to make the maximum use of phytoaccumulation while also removing hazardous metals from the aquatic habitats. This review outlines the major sources of HMs, their adverse effects on humans, the potential of algae in phytoremediation (called phycoremediation), and their uptake mechanism of HMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
