Moderate control of rice tillering and the development of rice varieties with large panicles are important topics for future high-yield rice breeding. Herein, we found that low-tillering rice varieties stopped tillering earlier and had a larger leaf area of the sixth leaf. Notably, at 28 days after sowing, the rice seedlings of the low-tillering group had an average single-culm above-ground biomass of 0.84 g, significantly higher than that of the multi-tillering group by 56.26%, and their NSC (non-structural carbohydrate) and starch contents in sheaths were increased by 43.34% and 97.75%, respectively. These results indicated that the low-tillering group of rice varieties had a stronger ability to store photosynthetic products in the form of starch in their sheaths, which was thus more beneficial for their large panicle development. The results of carbon and nitrogen metabolism analyses showed that the low-tillering group had a relatively strong carbon metabolism activity, which was more favorable for the accumulation of photosynthesis products and the following development of large panicles, while the multi-tillering group showed relatively strong nitrogen metabolism activity, which was more beneficial for the development and formation of new organs, such as tillers. Accordingly, in the low-tillering rice varieties, the up-regulated genes were enriched in the pathways mainly related to the synthesis of carbohydrates, while the down-regulated genes were mainly enriched in the nitrogen metabolism pathways. Vanadium (IV) chalcogenide materials are of increasing interest for use in catalysis and energy conversion-related applications. Since no ternary compounds are yet known in the V–Se–Te system, we studied ternary VwSeyTe2−y (w = 1.10, 1.13; y = 0.42, 0.72) phases crystallizing in space group P 3 ¯ m1 (no. 164). Two single-crystal specimens with differing compositions of a solid solution were obtained using the ceramic method. All products were characterized by either single-crystal or powder X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameters increase with rising tellurium content in accordance with the larger ionic radius of the tellurium anion compared to selenium. The chemical compositions were confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Furthermore, magnetic measurements mostly revealed antiferromagnetic properties. Simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric analyses in a nitrogen atmosphere showed endothermic decomposition accompanied by the formation of VN. The decomposition of VSe and VTe was observed in an argon atmosphere. A newly produced silk fibroin (SF) aerogel particulate system using a supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2)-assisted drying technology is herein proposed for biomedical applications. Different concentrations of silk fibroin (3%, 5%, and 7% (w/v)) were explored to investigate the potential of this technology to produce size- and porosity-controlled particles. Laser diffraction, helium pycnometry, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis and Fourier Transform Infrared with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectroscopy were performed to characterize the physicochemical properties of the material. The enzymatic degradation profile of the SF aerogel particles was evaluated by immersion in protease XIV solution, and the biological properties by cell viability and cell proliferation assays. The obtained aerogel particles were mesoporous with high and concentration dependent specific surface area (203–326 m2/g). They displayed significant antioxidant activity and sustained degradation in the presence of protease XIV enzyme. In this article, for the first time, TG-DSC and TG-FTIR investigations of potential pharmaceutics, i.e., analgesic and anticancer active annelated triazinones (1–9) have been presented. The thermal behaviour of these molecules was established in oxidative and inert conditions. The solid–liquid phase transition for each compound (1–9) was documented by one sharp DSC peak confirming the high purity of each sample studied. All the molecules were characterised in terms of calorimetric changes and mass changes during their heating. They revealed high thermal stability in oxidative and inert conditions. The observed tendency in thermal stability changes in relation to a substituent present at the phenyl moiety was found to be similar in air and nitrogen. It was confirmed that annelated triazinones 1–9 were stable up to a temperature range of 241–296 °C in air, and their decomposition process proceeded in two stages under oxidative conditions. In addition, it was established that their thermal stability in air decreased in the following order of R at the phenyl moiety: 4-Cl > 3,4-Cl2 > H > 3-Cl > 4-CH3 > 2-CH3 > 3-CH3 > 2-Cl > 2-OCH3. The volatile decomposition products of the investigated molecules were proposed by comparing the FTIR spectra collected during their thermogravimetric analysis in nitrogen with the spectra from the database of reference compounds. None of annelated triazinones 1–9 underwent any polymorphic transformation during thermal studies. All the compounds proved to be safe for erythrocytes. Simple Summary: Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) pose significant therapeutic challenges. Despite the advancement of treatment methods, they are still characterised by a poor prognosis. The isotopic abundance of oral cancers reflects their biology. A better understanding of OSCC biology may improve treatment outcomes. In this study, the isotopic compositions of the nitrogen and carbon of OSCC tissue samples were investigated across different oral cancer localisations. The correlations between the isotopic composition and clinical and histological advancement were established. The results suggest that assessment of the isotopic composition might serve as a valuable tool for determining tumour biology and behaviour. The aim of this paper was to characterise the isotopic composition of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) specimens of different areas of the oral cavity. Secondly, we assessed whether there was a correlation between clinical stages of OSCC and isotopic abundance. The IRMS procedure was performed on 124 samples derived from 31 patients with OSCC of 15 N and 13 C to assess the isotopic composition. From each individual, four samples from the tumour, two from the margins, and two samples of healthy oral mucous membranes were derived. The two samples from the tumour and two samples from the margin were additionally subjected to histopathological assessment. Then, statistical analysis was conducted. Tumour infiltration tissues of the lower lip were characterised by higher mean δ13C values compared to samples derived from cancers of the other oral cavity regions (−23.82 ± 1.21 vs. −22.67 ± 1.35); (p = 0.04). The mean percentage of nitrogen content in tumour tissues was statistically higher in patients with the most advanced cancers (11.89 ± 0.03%) versus the group of patients with II and III stage cancers (11.12 ± 0.02%); (p = 0.04). In patients at stage IV, the mean δ13C value in the cancer samples equalled −22.69 ± 1.42 and was lower than that in patients at less severe clinical stages (p = 0.04). Lower lip cancer tissues differed in the isotopic abundance of carbon in comparison with tissues derived from the group of combined samples from other locations. Values of δ13C observed in specimens derived from lower lip cancers were similar to those observed in healthy oral mucous membranes. Cancer tissues obtained from patients in the last stage of OSCC had a different isotopic composition in comparison with those obtained from earlier stages. Zeolites in powder form have the potential to agglomerate, lowering access to active sites. Furthermore, a suspension of fine zeolite powder in liquid media is difficult to separate. Such drawbacks could be improved by dispersing zeolite crystals on support materials. This work demonstrates the dispersion of zeolite NaY crystals on bamboo wood by mixing the wood with zeolite gel before hydrothermal treatment. The syntheses were performed with acid-refluxed and non–refluxed wood. The phase of zeolites, particle distribution and morphology, zeolite content in the wood, and zeolite–wood interaction were investigated using X-ray diffraction, X-ray tomography, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen sorption analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Higher zeolite content and better particle dispersion were obtained in the synthesis with the acid–refluxed wood. The composite of NaY on the acid-refluxed wood was demonstrated to be an effective adsorbent for Ni(II) ions in aqueous solutions, providing a higher adsorbed amount of Ni(II) per weight of NaY. The overapplication of nitrogen to wheat reduces profits and has adverse environmental consequences. Machine learning techniques are employed to identify the factors that hold the most potential in improving nitrogen recommendations. The database used in our analysis consisted of a formula fertilization project, the second soil census of China, and cultivated land fertility evaluation. The results showed that the wheat nitrogen yield response was mainly concentrated around 1300–2400 kg/ha in Henan Province, with the highest values observed in the southern and eastern regions and the lowest in the northern region. The soil nitrogen content, nitrogen fertilizer, wet nitrogen deposition, dry nitrogen deposition, and soil nitrogen supply capacity were mainly concentrated around 0.65–1.30 g/kg, 173–203 kg N/ha, 15–39 kg N/(ha yr), 7–49 kg N/(ha yr), and 105–150 kg N/ha, respectively. When comparing the spatial distribution of the soil nitrogen content, nitrogen fertilizer, and nitrogen deposition, we found that the soil nitrogen supply capacity emerged as the predominant factor controlling wheat grain production. Soil types, precipitation, and temperature demonstrated a notable positive correlation with the soil nitrogen supply capacity. Given this background, it would be unreasonable to rely solely on the soil nitrogen content as the standard for fertilizer management. Particularly in high-yield fields, our focus should be on preserving optimal soil fertility by placing greater emphasis on the soil nitrogen supply capacity rather than simply reducing fertilizer application during wheat growth. This work presented the production and incorporation of calcium-hydrolyzed nano-solutions at three concentrations (1, 2, and 3 wt.%) in alkali-activated gold mine tailings (MTs) from Arequipa, Perú. As the primary activator solution, a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution at 10 M was used. Calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles with a particle size of 10 nm were localized inside self-assembled molecular spherical systems (micelles) with diameters of less than 80 nm that were well-dispersed in aqueous solutions and acted as secondary activator, and also as additional calcium resource for alkali-activated materials (AAMs) based on low-calcium gold MTs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (HR-TEM/EDS) analyses were carried out to characterize the morphology, size, and structure of the calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses were then used to understand the chemical bonding interactions in the calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles and in the AAMs. Scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD) were performed to study the structural, chemical, and phase compositions of the AAMs; uniaxial compressive tests evaluated the compressive strength of the reaction AAMs; and nitrogen adsorption–desorption analyses measured porosity changes in the AAMs at the nanostructure level. The results indicated that the main cementing product generated was amorphous binder gel with low quantities of nanostructured C-S-H and C-A-S-H phases. The surplus production of this amorphous binder gel produced denser AAMs at the micro-level and nano-level (macroporous systems). In addition, each increase in the concentration of calcium-hydrolyzed nano-solution had a direct/proportional effect on the mechanical properties of the AAM samples. AAM with 3 wt.% calcium-hydrolyzed nano-solution had the highest compressive strength, with a value of 15.16 MPa, which represented an increase of 62% compared with the original system without nanoparticles that were aged under the same conditions at 70 °C for seven days. These results provided useful information about the positive effect of calcium-hydrolyzed nanoparticles on gold MTs and their conversion into sustainable building materials through alkali activation. The present study aimed at utilizing technically hydrolyzed lignin (THL), industrial biomass residue, derived in high-temperature diluted sulfuric acid hydrolysis of softwood and hardwood chips to sugars. The THL was carbonized in a horizontal tube furnace at atmospheric pressure, in inert atmosphere and at three different temperatures (500, 600, and 700 °C). Biochar chemical composition was investigated along with its HHV, thermal stability (thermogravimetric analysis), and textural properties. Surface area and pore volume were measured with nitrogen physisorption analysis often named upon Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET). Increasing the carbonization temperature reduced volatile organic compounds (40 ÷ 96 wt. %), increased fixed carbon (2.11 to 3.68 times the wt. % of fixed carbon in THL), ash, and C-content. Moreover, H and O were reduced, while N- and S-content were below the detection limit. This suggested biochar application as solid biofuel. The biochar Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectra revealed that the functional groups were gradually lost, thus forming materials having merely polycyclic aromatic structures and high condensation rate. The biochar obtained at 600 and 700 °C proved having properties typical for microporous adsorbents, suitable for selective adsorption purposes. Nitrogen metabolism (NM) plays an essential role in response to abiotic stresses for plants. Enzyme activities have been extensively studied for nitrogen metabolism-associated pathways, but the knowledge of nitrogen metabolism-associated genes involved in stress response is still limited, especially for rice. In this study, we performed the genome-wide characterization of the genes putatively involved in nitrogen metabolism. A total of 1110 potential genes were obtained to be involved in nitrogen metabolism from eight species (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh., Glycine max (L.) Merr., Brassica napus L., Triticum aestivum L., Sorghum bicolor L., Zea mays L., Oryza sativa L. and Amborella trichopoda Baill.), especially 104 genes in rice. The comparative phylogenetic analysis of the superfamily revealed the complicated divergence of different NM genes. The expression analysis among different tissues in rice indicates the NM genes showed diverse functions in the pathway of nitrogen absorption and assimilation. Distinct expression patterns of NM genes were observed in rice under drought stress, heat stress, and salt stress, indicating that the NM genes play a curial role in response to abiotic stress. Most NM genes showed a down-regulated pattern under heat stress, while complicated expression patterns were observed for different genes under salt stress and drought stress. The function of four representative NM genes (OsGS2, OsGLU, OsGDH2, and OsAMT1;1) was further validated by using qRT-PCR analysis to confirm their responses to these abiotic stresses. Based on the predicted transcription factor binding sites (TFBSs), we built a co-expression regulatory network containing transcription factors (TFs) and NM genes, of which the constructed ERF and Dof genes may act as the core genes to respond to abiotic stresses. Two novel fluorescent mesoporous silica-based hybrid materials were obtained through the covalent grafting of [4-hydrazinyl-7-nitrobenz-[2,1,3-d]-oxadiazole (NBDH) and N1-(7-nitrobenzo[c][1,2,5]-oxadiazol-4-yl) benzene-1,2-diamine (NBD-PD), respectively, inside the channels of mesoporous silica SBA-15. The presence of fluorescent organic compounds (nitrobenzofurazan derivatives) was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermal analysis (TG), and fluorescence spectroscopy. The nitrogen physisorption analysis showed that the nitrobenzofurazan derivatives were distributed uniformly on the internal surface of SBA-15, the immobilization process having a negligible effect on the structure of the support. Their antioxidant activity was studied by measuring the ability to reduce free radicals DPPH (free radical scavenging activity), in order to formulate potential applications of the materials obtained. Cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized materials, SBA-NBDH and SBA-NBD-PD, was evaluated on human B16 melanoma cells. The morphology of these cells, internalization and localization of the investigated materials in melanoma and fibroblast cells were examined through fluorescence imaging. The viability of B16 (3D) spheroids after treatment with SBA-NBDH and SBA-NBD-PD was evaluated using MTS assay. The results showed that both materials induced a selective antiproliferative effect, reducing to various degrees the viability of melanoma cells. The observed effect was enhanced with increasing concentration. SBA-NBD-PD exhibited a higher antitumor effect compared to SBA-NBDH starting with a concentration of 125 µg/mL. In both cases, a significantly more pronounced antiproliferative effect on tumor cells compared to normal cells was observed. The viability of B16 spheroids dropped by 40% after treatment with SBA-NBDH and SBA-NBD-PD at 500 µg/mL concentration, indicating a clear cytotoxic effect of the tested compounds. Reduced imine cage (RCC3) was covalently bonded to the surface of silica spheres, and then the secondary amine group of the molecular cage was embedded in non-polar C10 for modification to prepare a novel RCC3-C10@silica HPLC stationary phase with multiple separation functions. Through infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and nitrogen adsorption–desorption characterization, it was confirmed that RCC3-C10 was successfully bonded to the surface of silica spheres. The resolution of RCC3-C10@silica in reversed-phase separation mode is as high as 2.95, 3.73, 3.27 and 4.09 for p-phenethyl alcohol, 1-phenyl-2-propanol, p-methylphenethyl alcohol and 1-phenyl-1-propanol, indicating that the stationary phase has excellent chiral resolution performance. In reversed-phase and hydrophilic separation modes, RCC3-C10@silica realized the separation and analysis of a total of 70 compounds in 8 classes of Tanaka mixtures, alkylbenzene rings, polyphenyl rings, phenols, anilines, sulfonamides, nucleosides and flavonoids, and the analysis of a variety of chiral and achiral complex mixtures have been completed at the same time. Compared with the traditional C18 commercial column, RCC3-C10@silica exhibits better chromatographic separation selectivity, aromatic selectivity and polar selectivity. The multifunctional separation mechanism exhibited by the stationary phase originates from various synergistic effects such as hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction, hydrogen bonding and steric interaction provided by RCC3 and C10 groups. Spent caustic wastewater produced in a soda plant has a high concentration of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N). As excessive NH4+-N discharging into water bodies would cause eutrophication as well as destruction to the ecology balance, developing an efficient technology for NH4+-N removal from the spent caustic wastewater is imperative in the current society. In this study, an electrochemical process with graphene electrodes was designed for the NH4+-N removal in the spent caustic wastewater. The removal efficiency of the NH4+-N during the electrochemical process could reach 98.7% at 4 A in a short treatment time (within 120 s) with an acceptable energy consumption (6.1 kWh/m3-order). NO3− and NO2− were not detected during the electrochemical process. An insignificant amount of NH2Cl, NHCl2, and NCl3 produced in the treatment suggested that little of the NH4+-N reacted with chlorine, that is, chlorination played a negligible role in the NH4+-N removal. By electron equilibrium and nitrogen conversion analysis, we think that NH4+-N was primarily converted to NH2(ads) on the surface of a graphene electrode by one-electron transfer during the direct oxidation of the electrochemical process. Due to the high calcium ion (Ca2+) in the spent caustic wastewater, the electrode scale significantly increased to 1.4 g after treatment of 240 s at 4 A. By X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the composition of the electrode scale is portlandite Ca(OH)2. Although the electrode scale was obvious during the electrochemical treatment, it could be alleviated by alternating the electrode polarity. As a result, the life and efficiency of the graphene electrode for NH4+-N removal could remain stable for a long time. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) processing by-products (hemp cake and hemp seed hulls) were studied for their protein content, extraction of protein isolates (PIs), and their in vitro protein digestibility (IVPD). Crude protein contents of hemp cake and hemp seed hulls were 30.4% and 8.6%, respectively, calculated based on generalized N-to-P conversion factor (N × 5.37). Extraction efficiency of PIs from defatted biomass ranged from 56.0 to 67.7% with alkaline extraction (0.1 M NaOH) followed by isoelectric precipitation (1.0 M HCl). Nitrogen analysis suggested that the total protein contents of PIs extracted using three different alkaline conditions (0.5 M, 0.1 M, and pH 10.0 with NaOH) were >69.7%. The hemp by-product PIs contained all essential amino acids (EAAs) required for fish with leucine, valine, and phenylalanine belonging to the five dominant amino acids. Overall, glutamate was the dominant non-EAA followed by aspartate. Coomassie staining of an SDS-PAGE gel revealed strong presence of the storage protein edestin. High IVPD of >88% was observed for PIs extracted from hemp seeds and by-products when evaluated using a two-phase in vitro gastric/pancreatic protein digestibility assay. PIs extracted from by-products were further tested for their antioxidant activities. Sensor- and satellite-based determination of nitrogen uptake provides critical data in site-specific fertilization algorithms. Therefore, two basic noncontact measurement methods (sensor and satellite) were investigated in winter wheat, and their precision was evaluated in this study. Nitrogen uptake at four characteristic growth stages (BBCH 31, BBCH 39, BBCH 55, and BBCH 65) was determined using algorithms based on sensor and satellite data. As a reference, nitrogen uptake was determined using biomass samples in the laboratory (ground truth data). The precision of the tested methods was evaluated using statistical indicators (mean, median, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation) and correlation analyses between the nitrogen uptake of the ground truth data and that of the respective method. The results showed moderate to strong correlations with the nitrogen uptake of the ground truth data for both methods (R2 = 0.57–0.83). Both sensor and satellite data best represented nitrogen uptake in BBCH 39 and 55 (R2 = 0.63–0.83). In sum, there were only slight deviations in the absolute amount of nitrogen uptake (≤±15%). Clear deviations can be explained by external influences during measurement. Overall, the investigations showed that the nitrogen uptake could be appropriately determined as a data basis for site-specific fertilization systems using sensor and satellite data. Andrographolide, the principal secondary metabolite of Andrographis paniculata, displays a wide spectrum of medicinal activities. The content of andrographolide varies significantly in the species collected from different geographical regions. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the role of different abiotic factors and selecting suitable sites for the cultivation of A. paniculata with high andrographolide content using a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) approach. A total of 150 accessions of A. paniculata collected from different regions of Odisha and West Bengal in eastern India showed a variation in andrographolide content in the range of 0.28–5.45% on a dry weight basis. The MLP-ANN was trained using climatic factors and soil nutrients as the input layer and the andrographolide content as the output layer. The best topological ANN architecture, consisting of 14 input neurons, 12 hidden neurons, and 1 output neuron, could predict the andrographolide content with 90% accuracy. The developed ANN model showed good predictive performance with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.9716 and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 0.18. The global sensitivity analysis revealed nitrogen followed by phosphorus and potassium as the predominant input variables influencing the andrographolide content. The andrographolide content could be increased from 3.38% to 4.90% by optimizing these sensitive factors. During the process development for multigram-scale synthesis of olmesartan medoxomil (OM), two principal regioisomeric process-related impurities were observed along with the final active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). The impurities were identified as N-1- and N-2-(5-methyl-2-oxo-1,3-dioxolen-4-yl)methyl derivatives of OM. Both compounds, of which N-2 isomer of olmesartan dimedoxomil is a novel impurity of OM, were synthesized and fully characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), infrared spectroscopy (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and high-resolution mass spectrometry/electrospray ionization (HRMS/ESI). Their 1H, 13C and 15N nuclear magnetic resonance signals were fully assigned. The molecular structures of N-triphenylmethylolmesartan ethyl (N-tritylolmesartan ethyl) and N-tritylolmesartan medoxomil, the key intermediates in OM synthesis, were solved and refined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The SCXRD study revealed that N-tritylated intermediates of OM exist exclusively as one of the two possible regioisomers. In molecular structures of these regioisomers, the trityl substituent is attached to the N-2 nitrogen atom of the tetrazole ring, and not to the N-1 nitrogen, as has been widely reported up to the present. This finding indicates that the reported structural formula of N-tritylolmesartan ethyl and N-tritylolmesartan medoxomil, as well as their systematic chemical names, must be revised. Over the last several years there has been a huge increase in the development and applications of new efficient organocatalysts for enantioselective pericyclic reactions, which represent one of the most powerful types of organic transformations. The specific mechanisms by which nitrogen affects nodulation and nitrogen fixation in leguminous crops are still unclear. To study the relationship between nitrogen, nodulation and nitrogen fixation in soybeans, dual-root soybean plants with unilateral nodulation were prepared by grafting. At the third trifoliate leaf (V3) to fourth trifoliate leaf (V4) growth stages (for 5 days), nitrogen nutrient solution was added to the non-nodulated side, while nitrogen-free nutrient solution was added to the nodulated side. The experiment was designed to study the effects of exogenous nitrogen on proteins and metabolites in root nodules and provide a theoretical reference for analyzing the physiological mechanisms of the interaction between nitrogen application and nitrogen fixation in soybean root nodules. Compared with no nitrogen treatment, exogenous nitrogen regulated the metabolic pathways of starch and sucrose metabolism, organic acid metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, and amino acid metabolism, among others. Additionally, exogenous nitrogen promoted the synthesis of signaling molecules, including putrescine, nitric oxide, and asparagine in root nodules, and inhibited the transformation of sucrose to malic acid; consequently, the rhizobia lacked energy for nitrogen fixation. Ammonium is a paradoxical nutrient because it is more metabolically efficient than nitrate, but also causes plant stresses in excess, i.e., ammonium toxicity. Current knowledge indicates that ammonium tolerance is species-specific and related to the ammonium assimilation enzyme activities. However, the mechanisms underlying the ammonium tolerance in bedding plants remain to be elucidated. The study described herein explores the primary traits contributing to the ammonium tolerance in three bedding plants. Three NH4+:NO3− ratios (0:100, 50:50, 100:0) were supplied to salvia, petunia, and ageratum. We determined that they possessed distinct ammonium tolerances: salvia and petunia were, respectively, extremely sensitive and moderately sensitive to high NH4+ concentrations, whereas ageratum was tolerant to NH4+, as characterized by the responses of the shoot and root growth, photosynthetic capacity, and nitrogen (amino acid and soluble protein)-carbohydrate (starch) distributions. An analysis of the major nitrogen assimilation enzymes showed that the root GS (glutamine synthetase) and NADH-GDH (glutamate dehydrogenase) activities in ageratum exhibited a dose-response relationship (reinforced by 25.24% and 6.64%, respectively) as the NH4+ level was raised from 50% to 100%; but both enzyme activities were significantly diminished in salvia. Besides, negligible changes of GS activities monitored in leaves revealed that only the root GS and NADH-GDH underpin the ammonium tolerances of the three bedding plants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, the antibacterial properties of Carvacrol (Carv) have been significantly reported. However, due to the unstable properties of Carv under various environment conditions, research approaches tailored towards its widespread and efficient use in various antimicrobial applications are scarce. Here, we discuss progress towards overcoming this challenge by utilising the encapsulation of Carv in gellan gum hydrogels to form thin films (GG-Carv) containing different concentrations of Carv (0.01–0.32 M). FTIR spectrum of GG-Carv revealed that both functional groups from GG and Carv existed. The carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen elemental analysis further supported the encapsulation of Carv with the changes in the element percentage of GG-Carv. Both swelling and degradation percentage increased with time and the decreasing patterns were observed as the concentration of Carv increased. In an antibacterial study, GG-Carv exhibited significant antibacterial activity against E. coli with the clear inhibition zone of 200 mm and the detection of bacterial growth showed enhancement with continuous decline throughout the study as compared to free-standing Carv. Synthetic saponites were successfully used to prepare phase change materials (PCMs) based on paraffin/synthetic saponite. Paraffin/synthetic saponites PCMs were prepared by a solution intercalation process. The PCMs were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermal analyses and nitrogen adsorption. The thermal properties and the stability of PCMs were measured by DSC analysis and from heating–cooling curves. The results showed that the prepared PCMs have a higher heating rate and a lower cooling speed than paraffin because the heat storage was improved with the synthetic saponite. A one-pot synthesis method for obtaining PCM has been successfully developed in this work. The material thus obtained had better results for heat storage applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the deepening of urbanization and industrialization, as well as the exacerbation of energy consumption, China is facing a severe situation in which nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions reduction is imperative. In this study, it is aimed to put forward countermeasures and suggestions to reduce NOx emissions by analyzing the impact and mechanism of new urbanization, the agglomeration of energy-intensive industries and mutual interactions on China's NOx emissions. By analyzing the data of 30 provinces in China from 2006 to 2017, this paper adopted the system generalized method of moments (SYS-GMM) and intermediary effect model to introduce four variables, such as: energy efficiency, human capital, industrial structure and energy structure, which were for empirical analysis. From the results, it was shown that: (1) NOx emissions in China have an accumulated effect; (2) new urbanization inhibits NOx emissions, whilst the agglomeration of energy-intensive industries intensifies NOx emissions. New urbanization weakens the negative impact of the agglomeration of energy-intensive industries on NOx emissions reduction and, (3) among the impacts of new urbanization on NOx emissions, the energy efficiency and human capital reflect the intermediary effect mechanism. At the same time, in the impact of the agglomeration of energy-intensive industries on NOx emissions, the industrial structure and energy structure show the mechanisms of the intermediary effect and masking effect, respectively. This paper explores the thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of HFC-134a over γ-Al2O3 calcined at temperatures of 550 °C (A550), 650 °C (A650), 750 °C (A750), and 850 °C (A850). The physicochemical properties of catalysts were studied through thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller equation for nitrogen physisorption analysis (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD). The non-catalytic pyrolysis of HFC-134a showed less than 15% decomposition of HFC-134a. Catalysts increased the decomposition as A650 revealed the highest decomposition efficiency by decomposing more than 95% HFC-134a for 8 h followed by A750, A850, and A550. The larger surface area and pore volume paired with a low amount of strong acidic sites were considered as the main contributors to the comparatively longer catalytic activity of A650. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of three different treatments on the morphology, microstructure, and the thermal characteristics of a montmorillonite (Mt) sample, by using hydrochloric acid (HCl), tributyl tetradecyl phosphonium chloride (TTPC) surfactant, and γ-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MPS). The resultant nanofillers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the amount of chemical grafting of the γ-MPS was increased after the acid treatment, whereas the amount of intercalation of the TTPC surfactant was decreased. The preintercalation of TTPC or silylation of γ-MPS, for the Mt sample, had a certain hindrance effect on its subsequent silylation or intercalation treatments. Furthermore, the effect of four different nanofillers on the thermal stability properties of the polystyrene (PS) matrix were also investigated. The results showed an increase in thermal stability for the triple-functionalized Mt, compared with the double-functionalized samples. The onset decomposition temperatures and the maximum mass loss temperatures of the PS nanocomposites were increased by 27 °C and 32 °C, respectively, by the incorporation of triple-modified Mt, as a result of the good exfoliation and dispersion of the nanolayers, more favorable polymer–nanofiller interaction, as well as the formation of a more remarkable tortuous pathway in the continuous matrix. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) on reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) concentrations using the statistical method of the Anderson-Darling test. To compare and analyze this effect, a spray-type form of TiO2 was applied to the asphalt pavement surface on urban roads. Data acquisition for NOx concentration was collected from a test section with TiO2 applied and a reference section without TiO2 applied. The probabilities of occurrence of the NOx concentration in the test and reference section were estimated and compared using the Anderson-Darling test. In sum, most of the NOx concentrations were probabilistically lower in the test section. The average probability of the NOx concentration in the test section in the 'low' range was 46.2% higher than in the reference section. In the 'high' and 'moderate' ranges, the average probability of the NOx concentration compared to that of the reference section was lower by 28.1% and 18.8%, respectively. These results revealed that the photochemical reaction from the TiO2 material applied on asphalt pavement was effective in reducing NOx. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nitrogen (N) is crucial for plant growth and development; however, excessive use of N fertilizers cause many problems including environmental damage, degradation of soil fertility, and high cost to the farmers. Therefore, immediate implementation is required to develop N efficient crop varieties. Rice being low nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and a high demand staple food across the world has become a favorite crop to study the NUE trait. In the current study, we used the publicly available transcriptome data generated from the root and shoot tissues of two rice genotypes IR-64 and Nagina-22 (N-22) under optimum N supply (N+) and chronic N-starvation (N−). A stringent pipeline was applied to detect differentially expressed genes (DEGs), alternatively spliced (DAS) genes, differentially expressed transcripts (DETs) and differential transcript usage (DTU) transcripts in both the varieties and tissues under N+ and N− conditions. The DAS genes and DTU transcripts identified in the study were found to be involved in several metabolic and biosynthesis processes. We suggest alternative splicing (AS) plays an important role in fine-tuning the regulation of metabolic pathways related genes in genotype, tissue, and condition-dependent manner. The application of layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanomaterials as catalysts has attracted great interest due to their unique structural features. It also triggered the need to study their fate and behavior in the aquatic environment. In the present study, Zn-Fe nanolayered double hydroxides (Zn-Fe LDHs) were synthesized using a co-precipitation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses. The toxicity of the home-made Zn-Fe LDHs catalyst was examined by employing a variety of aquatic organisms from different trophic levels, namely the marine photobacterium Vibrio fischeri, the freshwater microalga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, the freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna, and the duckweed Spirodela polyrhiza. From the experimental results, it was evident that the acute toxicity of the catalyst depended on the exposure time and type of selected test organism. This paper reports on the analysis and findings of the data collected during a mobile air quality campaign commissioned by the City of London Corporation (CoL). This was done using an equipped vehicle capable of taking continuous precision measurements of local air quality while travelling within the City. Several comparative analyses on measured Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) data have been performed between Smogmobile data and those available from CoL precision systems as well as with indicative systems, namely Diffusion Tubes, distributed across the City. Key findings highlight that data collected from the Smogmobile, in terms of average concentration of NO2 across the City (62 µg/m3), are very similar to those obtained by averaging the values from the 48 indicative systems (59.5 µg/m3), with an error of just 4%. Overall, this study demonstrates significant potential and value in using mobile air quality measurements to support assessment of air quality over large areas by Local authorities. A raw montmorillonite (Mt) was submitted to different acidic activation times in order to investigate the influence of the strength and the nature (Brønsted and Lewis) of acidic sites on the synergistic action with an intumescent formulation (IF) composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) when incorporated into a polypropylene (PP) matrix. The acidity of the Mt samples was quantified by ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (TPD-NH3) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) with pyridine adsorption. The mineral clays were also characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption analysis and particle size distribution. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limit oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 were performed to evaluate the flame-retardant properties and the thermal stability. The TGA results show that the final residue increased 2 to 3 fold in comparison to the values predicted theoretically. The flammability properties achieved a maximum for the system containing an excess of moderate-strength Brønsted sites relative to the Lewis ones, reaching 38% in the LOI test. This result suggests that the presence of these Brønsted acidic sites is important, as they take part in the esterification reaction between APP and PER which gives rise to the char formation. The FTIR-Pyr adsorption and flammability results indicate that both the nature and strength of the acidic sites influence the flame-retardant properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The TiO2-Fe3O4 composite materials were fabricated via the hydrothermal-assisted technique. It was determined how the molar ratio of TiO2 to Fe3O4 influences the crystalline structure and morphology of the synthesized composite materials. The effect of the molar ratio of components on the antibacterial activity was also analyzed. On the basis of XRD patterns for the obtained titanium(IV) oxide-iron(II, III) oxide composites, the two separate crystalline forms—anatase and magnetite —were observed. Transmission electron microscopy revealed particles of cubic and tetragonal shape for TiO2 and spherical for Fe3O4. The results of low-temperature nitrogen sorption analysis indicated that an increase in the iron(II, III) oxide content leads to a decrease in the BET surface area. Moreover, the superparamagnetic properties of titanium(IV) oxide-iron(II, III) oxide composites should be noted. An important aim of the work was to determine the antibacterial activity of selected TiO2-Fe3O4 materials. For this purpose, two representative strains of bacteria, the Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, were used. The titanium(IV) oxide-iron(II, III) oxide composites demonstrated a large zone of growth inhibition for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In this paper, a robust analysis of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration measurements taken at Belisario station (Quito, Ecuador) was performed. The data used for the analysis constitute a set of measurements taken from 1 January 2008 to 31 December 2019. Furthermore, the analysis was carried out in a robust way, defining variables that represent years, months, days and hours, and classifying these variables based on estimates of the central tendency and dispersion of the data. The estimators used here were classic, nonparametric, based on a bootstrap method, and robust. Additionally, confidence intervals based on these estimators were built, and these intervals were used to categorize the variables under study. The results of this research showed that the NO2 concentration at Belisario station is not harmful to humans. Moreover, it was shown that this concentration tends to be stable across the years, changes slightly during the days of the week, and varies greatly when analyzed by months and hours of the day. Here, the precision provided by both nonparametric and robust statistical methods served to comprehensively proof the aforementioned. Finally, it can be concluded that the city of Quito is progressing on the right path in terms of improving air quality, because it has been shown that there is a decreasing tendency in the NO2 concentration across the years. In addition, according to the Quito Air Quality Index, most of the observations are in either the desirable level or acceptable level of air pollution, and the number of observations that are in the desirable level of air pollution increases across the years. In this work we propose a facile method of preparing cost-effective clay-metaloxide/metal (CuO/Ag and ZnO/Ag) composite pellets for an efficient water purification technique. Clay, with intrinsic antibacterial activity, served as a membrane support for different metaloxide/Ag nanoparticles (NPs) concentrations (2.5, 5 and 10 wt.%), as the active fillers. The effect of time (24 and 48 h) on the bactericidal activity of these pellets was also monitored. The clay–nanocomposite pellets were characterized using: X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometry and nitrogen desorption analysis. The antibacterial activity performance was tested using E. coli and S. aureus strains of ATCC25922 and ATCC25923, respectively, in two aqueous media (nutrient broth and nutrient-free) by the colony-forming unit method. The results showed that the clay-CuO/Ag composite with a bandgap (1.24 eV) exhibited overall best performance under all conditions and time factors of ~100% efficiency in nutrient-free medium for all concentrations and times and 20–40% efficiency in nutrient broth for 24 h. The clay-ZnO/Ag with a bandgap of 2.88 eV showed no bactericidal activity in both media, except for that with 10 wt.% ZnO/Ag which showed 100% efficiency in nutrient-free medium after 24 h. All the synthesized composites showed 100% bactericidal efficiency in nutrient free medium after 48 h. Herein, we propose hydrothermal treatment as a facile and environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide hybrids. A series of self-assembled hybrid materials with different component mass ratios of conductive polymer to graphene oxide was prepared. The morphology, porous structure, chemical composition and electrochemical performance of the synthesized hybrids as electrode materials for supercapacitors were investigated. Nitrogen sorption analysis at 77 K revealed significant changes in the textural development of the synthesized materials, presenting specific surface areas ranging from 25 to 199 m2 g−1. The combination of the pseudocapacitive polypyrrole and robust graphene material resulted in hybrids with excellent electrochemical properties, which achieved specific capacitances as high as 198 F g−1 at a current density of 20 A g−1 and retained up to 92% of their initial capacitance after 3000 charge–discharge cycles. We found that a suitable morphology and chemical composition are key factors that determine the electrochemical properties of polypyrrole/reduced graphene oxide hybrid materials. Several studies show a synergistic effect between intumescent formulations and aluminosilicates, such as zeolites and clays, but little is known about the effect of acidity of these additives on the synergistic action. In this work, H-ZSM-5 zeolite was submitted to desilication treatments for 30 min and for 2 h, and silicalite-1 was synthesized. The objective was to obtain samples of equivalent crystalline structure, but with different amounts of acid sites, in order to evaluate the effect of acid concentration of H-ZSM-5 zeolites on the synergistic action with an intumescent formulation composed by ammonium polyphosphate and pentaerythritol in polypropylene. H-ZSM-5 zeolites and silicalite were characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption analysis and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia. The desilication produced H-ZSM-5 zeolites with similar volumes of mesopores in both treatments, but the zeolite resulting from 2 h of desilication presented a higher concentration of acid sites than the zeolite from 30 min. The flame-retardant properties were evaluated by UL-94 classification, limiting oxygen index, glow-wire, thermogravimetric analysis and heating microscopy. The results showed that increasing the concentration and accessibility of the acid sites of H-ZSM-5 zeolites the flame-retardant properties of the studied composites improved. It is suggested that the increase of acid site concentration positively influences the catalysis of the reaction between ammonium polyphosphate and pentaerythritol, favoring the production of the precursors of the intumescent layer. Supercritical solvent impregnation (SSI) is a green unconventional technique for preparing amorphous drug formulations. A mesoporous nanostructured ZnO (mesoNsZnO) carrier with 8-nm pores, spherical-nanoparticle morphology, and an SSA of 75 m2/g has been synthesized and, for the first time, subjected to SSI with poorly water-soluble drugs. Ibuprofen (IBU), clotrimazole (CTZ), and hydrocortisone (HC) were selected as highly, moderately, and poorly CO2-soluble drugs. Powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption analysis, and ethanol extraction coupled with ultraviolet spectroscopy were employed to characterize the samples and quantify drug loading. Successful results were obtained with IBU and CTZ while HC loading was negligible, which could be related to different solubilities in CO2, drug size, and polarity. Successful SSI resulted in amorphous multilayer confinement of the drug. The mesoNsZnO-IBU system showed double drug loading than the mesoNsZnO-CTZ one, with a maximum uptake of 0.24 g/g. Variation of contact time during SSI of the mesoNsZnO-IBU system showed that drug loading triplicated between 3 and 8 h with an additional 30% increment between 8 h and 24 h. SSI did not affect the mesoNsZnO structure, and the presence of the adsorbed drug reduced the chemisorption of CO2 on the carrier surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the first time, zirconia nanofibers with an average diameter of about 75 nm have been fabricated by calcination of electrospun zirconium acetylacetonate/polyacrylonitrile fibers in the range of 500–1100 °C. Composite and ceramic filaments have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. The stages of the transition of zirconium acetylacetonate to zirconia have been revealed. It has been found out that a rise in calcination temperature from 500 to 1100 °C induces transformation of mesoporous tetragonal zirconia nanofibers with a high specific surface area (102.3 m2/g) to non-porous monoclinic zirconia nanofibers of almost the same diameter with a low value of specific surface area (8.3 m2/g). The tetragonal zirconia nanofibers with high specific surface area prepared at 500 °C can be considered, for instance, as promising supports for heterogeneous catalysts, enhancing their activity. Novel hyperspectral indices, which are the first derivative normalized difference nitrogen index (FD-NDNI) and the first derivative ratio nitrogen vegetation index (FD-SRNI), were developed to estimate the leaf nitrogen content (LNC) of wheat. The field stress experiments were conducted with different nitrogen and water application rates across the growing season of wheat and 190 measurements were collected on canopy spectra and LNC under various treatments. The inversion models were constructed based on the dataset to evaluate the ability of various spectral indices to estimate LNC. A comparative analysis showed that the model accuracies of FD-NDNI and FD-SRNI were higher than those of other commonly used hyperspectral indices including mNDVI705, mSR, and NDVI705, which was indicated by higher R2 and lower root mean square error (RMSE) values. The least squares support vector regression (LS-SVR) and random forest regression (RFR) algorithms were then used to optimize the models constructed by FD-NDNI and FD-SRNI. The p-R2 values of the FD-NDNI_RFR and FD-SRNI_RFR models reached 0.874 and 0.872, respectively, which were higher than those of the exponential and SVR model and indicated that the RFR model was accurate. Using the RFR inversion model, remote sensing mapping for the Operative Modular Imaging Spectrometer (OMIS) image was accomplished. The remote sensing mapping of the OMIS image yielded an accuracy of R2 = 0.721 and RMSE = 0.540 for FD-NDNI and R2 = 0.720 and RMSE = 0.495 for FD-SRNI, which indicates that the similarity between the inversion value and the measured value was high. The results show that the new hyperspectral indices, i.e., FD-NDNI and FD-SRNI, are the optimal hyperspectral indices for estimating LNC and that the RFR algorithm is the preferred modeling method. Nitrogen (and also oxygen) determination has become an important parameter to characterize (oxy)nitride materials for many properties and applications. Analyzing such anions with accuracy is still a challenge for some materials. However, to date, a large panel of methodologies is available to answer this issue with relevant results, even for thin films. Carrier gas hot extraction techniques and electron probe microanalysis with wavelength dispersive spectroscopy (EPMA-WDS) look attractive to analyze bulk materials and thin films, respectively. Remote sensing has been widely used to estimate the distribution of foliar nitrogen (N) in a cost-effective manner. Although hyperspectral remote sensing targeting the red edge and shortwave infrared regions has proved successful at estimating foliar N, research has recently shifted to include exploring the benefits of using the near-infrared (NIR) region, especially when using broadband sensing. Bootstrapped random forest regression analysis was applied on Sentinel 2 data to test the significance of using the NIR in foliar N estimation in miombo woodlands. The results revealed a low ranking for individual NIR bands, but the ranking improved when spectral indices were used. In addition, the results indicated a marginal increase in the normalised root mean square error of prediction (nRMSE) from 11.35% N when all bands were used to 11.69% N when the NIR bands were excluded from the model. Bootstrapping results show higher accuracy and better consistency in the prediction of foliar N using combined spectral indices and individual bands. This study therefore underscores the significance of spectral indices to increase the NIR region’s importance in estimating the distribution of foliar N as a key indicator of ecosystem health at the landscape scale in miombo systems.
