Latent Heat Storage (LHS) with Phase-Change Materials (PCMs) represents a high energy density storage technology which could be applied in a variety of applications such as waste heat recovery and integration of renewable energy technologies in energy systems. To increase the sustainability of these storage solutions, PCMs have to be developed with particular regard to bio-origin and biodegradability. Triglycerides represent an interesting class of esters as the main constituents of animal and vegetable fats, with attractive thermal properties. In order to be used as PCMs, the thermal behaviour of triglycerides has to be fully understood, as in some cases they have been reported to show polymorphism and supercooling. This study assesses the suitability of triglycerides as PCMs by reviewing the literature published so far on their behaviour and properties. In particular, melting points, enthalpies of fusion, polymorphism, thermal conductivities, heat capacities and thermal cycling stabilities are considered, with a focus on LHS and thermal energy storage applications. In addition, the efforts conducted regarding modelling and the prediction of melting points and enthalpies based on chemical structures are summarized and assessed.

In the present research, the impacts of Ce additions at various concentrations (0, 1.0, 3.4, and 4.0 wt.%) on the evolution of the microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity of as-cast and as-extruded Mg-3Sn alloys were investigated. The findings demonstrate that adding Ce caused the creation of a new ternary MgSnCe phase in the magnesium matrix. Some new Mg17Ce2 phases are generated in the microstructure when Ce levels reach 4%. The thermal conductivity of the Mg-3Sn alloy is significantly improved due to Ce addition, and the Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy exhibits the highest thermal conductivity, up to 133.8 W/(m·K) at 298 K. After extrusion, both the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties are further improved. The thermal conductivity perpendicular to the extrusion direction of Mg-3Sn-3.4Ce alloy could achieve 136.28 W/(m·K), and the tensile and yield strengths reach 264.3 MPa and 227.2 MPa, with an elongation of 7.9%. Adding Ce decreases the dissolved Sn atoms and breaks the eutectic α-Mg and Mg2Sn network organization, leading to a considerable increase in the thermal conductivity of as-cast Mg-3Sn alloys. The energy consumption of buildings presents a significant concern, which has led to a demand for materials with better thermal performance. Thermal conductivity (TC), among the most relevant thermal properties, is essential to address this demand. This study introduces a methodology integrating a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to predict the TC of concrete based on its mass composition and density. Three scenarios using experimental data from published papers and synthetic data are compared and reveal the model's outstanding performance across training, validation, and test datasets. Notably, the MLP trained on the GAN-augmented dataset outperforms the one with the real dataset, demonstrating remarkable consistency between the model's predictions and the actual values. Achieving an RMSE of 0.0244 and an R2 of 0.9975, these outcomes can offer precise quantitative information and advance energy-efficient materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of ecological sustainability, this study focuses on the effect of variables of pasture fibers on the thermal properties of slag bricks made from a green recyclable material. This experiment uses slag as the binder, sand as the aggregate, and pasture fiber as an additive. The experimental variables include the additive content ratio of the pasture fiber, the size of the pasture fiber, and the type of pasture fiber. Significance analysis of the experimental results of the thermal performance tests is carried out using Minitab 18.1.0 software, and the optimal ratios for the thermal performance of the composite samples are derived from the response optimizer and conformity analysis. The results of the experiment's test analysis using Minitab 18 software indicate that, with an increase in pasture fiber content, the thermal performance of the composite samples initially decreases before increasing. Additionally, the lower the thermal conductivity of the composite sample, the lower the apparent density and the higher the porosity. Incorporating pasture fibers into slag bricks, as revealed in this study, reduces the waste of pasture resources in pastoral areas and promotes the development of sustainable building materials with favorable thermal properties. Silica aerogel has remarkable properties, particularly its translucence/transparency, extremely low thermal conductivity and density. Due to these properties, it can be used for the thermal insulation of buildings for energy saving, cost saving, and enhanced comfort. In this context, aerogel products such as aerogel blankets have already started to demonstrate their effectiveness in retrofitting projects and the development and adoption of aerogel glazing systems and aerogel-enhanced renders is promising. Other products, for example, through the incorporation of silica aerogel granules in cement and lime renders were obtained, with high thermal insulation properties, to achieve energy efficiency on buildings facades. This research aims to come up with new aerogel particle composition insulation plasters at cost-effective rates for application in building insulation. Their physical apparent mass density, mechanical–flexural and compressive strengths, thermal conductivity, and properties were investigated. As an experimental study, the thermal conductivities of six sets of cement and lime plasters with aerogel particles (0.1–4.0 mm) were investigated and it was concluded that the thermal conductivity of cement and lime plasters with 80% aerogel was 0.2287 W·m−1·K−1, about 3.4 times smaller than the respective value of traditional lightweight plasters of 0.76 W·m−1·K−1, while the cement and lime plasters with less than 40% aerogel showed a thermal conductivity value as low as 0.3172 W·m−1·K−1. It was confirmed that the end product plasters' mechanical qualities included low apparent mass densities, no apparent shrinkage, and mechanical strength values that matched those of the prepared compositions. The miniaturization and high-power density of modern electronic devices pose significant thermal management issues, particularly affecting their performance and lifetime. Ladder-like polysilsesquioxanes (LPSQs) offer a promising solution due to their remarkable thermal, mechanical, and chemical properties. By incorporating thermally conductive fillers, LPSQ composites can achieve high thermal conductivity (TC), making them ideal for thermal management in advanced electronic applications. In this study, LPSQ-based nanocomposites containing functionalized alumina nanoparticles were prepared by solution casting and UV curing, and the effects of varying amounts of Irgacure-184 photoinitiator on their structural and thermal properties were investigated. Three sets of samples were prepared with a fixed amount of LPSQs, 80 wt.% of nanoparticles, and 1, 5, or 10 wt.% of photoinitiator with respect to the matrix. TC was evaluated from the measured values of heat capacity, density, and thermal diffusivity. TC values increased by 60%, 71.2%, and 93.1% for the three samples, respectively, compared to the neat matrix. Results indicate that an intermediate amount of photoinitiator (5%) preserved LPSQs' structural integrity, namely the presence of long linear silsesquioxane chains, and provided good filler dispersion and distribution, high polymerization degree, thermal stability, and high TC. Research into lightweight structural concrete using volcanic tuff is of great importance to the construction industry. These materials have excellent thermal insulation properties, which helps improve the energy efficiency of buildings. A three-factor experimental design was used to build the statistical model. The test methods used were methods for determining the crushability of volcanic tuff, determining the average density, compressive strength and thermal conductivity of lightweight structural concrete. The influence of basalt fiber on the properties of lightweight structural concrete has been determined. The optimal compositions of lightweight structural concrete using tuff have been selected. The compressive strength of lightweight structural concrete reached 32.0 MPa. The average density range is 1754.6–2114.0 kg/m3. Good thermal conductivity values were obtained in the range of 0.653–0.818 W/m·K. The article obtained the optimal compositions of lightweight structural concrete using volcanic tuff as a filler. PDMS-based aerogel layers were synthesized as insulation layers by adopting mullite fiber (MF), hollow glass microspheres (HGM) and silica aerogel (SA) as the main fillers, and their loading amounts and content ratios were checked to investigate their effects on the thermal insulation properties in PDMS composites by thermal conductivity, thermal stability, and thermal insulation. The loading amount of nanofillers can significantly influence the insulation-layer performance, and the best performance with the lowest thermal conductivity of 0.0568 W/(m·K) was obtained by 10 wt% loading in PDMS with MF:SA:HGM = 2:2:1, which can achieve a temperature difference (∆T) of 67 °C on a 200 °C hotplate. Moreover, the variation of the filler content ratios can also affect the thermal insulation behavior when the loading amount is fixed at 10 wt%, and the best thermal barrier performance can be found for the sample with more SA as the filler (MF:SA:HGM = 1:3:1). The formed sample had the best thermal stability and thermal insulation property, which can stand a 9 min flame test without burning by butane spray gun, and the backside of the sample showed ∆T > 500 °C for the whole test. In recent years, attention to the realization and characterization of wetsuits for scuba diving and other sea sports or activities has increased. The research has aimed to establish reliable and standardized measurement methods to objectively assess wetsuit quality, particularly focusing on their mechanical and thermal properties. In this work, we describe and compare two different measurement methods for the characterization of neoprene wetsuit thermal resistivity. The first method follows the existing regulations in the field, while the second one, which we are originally proposing in this paper, offers an alternative yet accurate way based on a simplified experimental set-up and easier measurements. In both cases, the wetsuit sample under testing was shaped in the form of a cylindrical sleeve of proper dimensions and wrapped around a phantom containing water at a higher temperature and surrounded by water at a lower temperature. The wetsuit's cylindrical surface allows heat flow from the warmer water on the inside to the colder water on the outside through the wetsuit area. In the first case, a thermal steady state was achieved, with constant heat flow from the phantom to the exterior. This was obtained with a power balance between two homogenous quantities. Electrically supplied thermal heating within the phantom was used to balance the thermal energy naturally flowing through the wetsuit's surface. In this first case, a stable and fixed temperature difference was obtained between the inner and the outer surfaces of the wetsuit sample. In the second case, a thermal transient was analyzed during the cooling process of the phantom, and the thermal time constant was measured, providing the sample thermal resistance once the phantom thermal capacity was known. In both cases and methods, the heat flow and thermal resistance of other elements than the wetsuit must be evaluated and compensated for if they are not negligible. Finally, the thermal resistivity per unit area of the wetsuit material was obtained with the product of the wetsuit sample's thermal resistance and the wetsuit area. The measurements, conducted until now by immersing the phantom in a free surface tank, show that both methods—under stationary and under transient temperature conditions—were valid to assess the wetsuit's thermal resistivity. The stationary method somehow provided better accuracy while involving less well-known parameters but at the expense of a more complicated experimental set-up and additional energy consumption. The transitory method, on the other hand, is quite easy to implement and, after careful characterization of the phantom's parameters, it provided similar results to the stationary one. An uncertainty budget was evaluated for both methods, and they did provide highly compatible measurement results, with resistivity values of 0.104(9) m2·K/W (stationary method) and 0.095(9) K·m2/W (transient method) for the same wetsuit sample under testing, which is also consistent with the values in the literature. This study compares the workability, mechanical, and thermal characteristics of structural self-compacting lightweight concrete (SCLWC) formulations using pumice aggregate (PA), expanded perlite aggregate (EPA), fly ash (FA), and silica fume (SF). FA and SF were used as partial substitutes for cement at a 10% ratio in various mixes, impacting different aspects: According to the obtained results, FA enhanced the workability but SF reduced it, while SF improved the compressive and splitting tensile strengths more than FA. EPA, used as a fine aggregate alongside PA, decreased the workability, compressive strength, and splitting tensile strength compared to the control mix (K0). The thermal properties were altered by FA and SF similarly, while EPA notably reduced the thermal conductivity coefficients. The thermal conductivity coefficients (TCCs) of the K0–K4 SCLWC mixtures ranged from 0.275 to 0.364 W/mK. K0 had a TCC of 0.364 W/mK. With 10% FA, K1 achieved 0.305 W/mK; K2 with 10% SF reached 0.325 W/mK. K3 and K4, using EPA instead of PA, showed significantly lower TCC values: 0.275 W/mK and 0.289 W/mK, respectively. FA and SF improved the thermal conductivity compared to K0, while EPA further reduced the TCC values in K3 and K4 compared to K1 and K2. The compressive strength (CS) values of the K0–K4 SCLWC mixtures at 7 and 28 days reveal notable trends. Using 10% FA in K1 decreased the CS at both 7 days (12.16 MPa) and 28 days (22.36 MPa), attributed to FA's gradual pozzolanic activity. Conversely, K2 with SF showed increased CS at 7 days (17.88 MPa) and 28 days (29.89 MPa) due to SF's rapid pozzolanic activity. Incorporating EPA into K3 and K4 reduced the CS values compared to PA, indicating EPA's lower strength contribution due to its porous structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work evaluates the electrical, optical and thermal properties of Sn-doped GexSi1-xOy thin films for use as microbolometer sensing materials. The films were prepared using a combination of a radio frequency (RF) magnetron and direct current (DC) sputtering using a Kurt J Leskar Proline PVD-75 series sputtering machine. Thin films were deposited in an O2+Ar environment at a chamber pressure of 4 mTorr. The thicknesses of the thin films were varied between 300 nm–1.2 µm by varying the deposition time. The morphology and microstructure of thin films were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging and X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the atomic composition was determined using the energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) function of a scanning electron microscope. The thin film with an atomic composition of Ge0.45Si0.05Sn0.15O0.35 was found to be amorphous. We used the Arrhenius relationship to determine the activation energy as well as temperature coefficient of resistance of the thin films, which were found to be 0.2529 eV and −3.26%/K, respectively. The noise voltage power spectral density (PSD) of the film was analyzed using a Primarius—9812DX noise analyzer using frequencies ranging from 2 Hz to 10 kHz. The noise voltage PSD of the film was found to be 1.76 × 10−11 V2/Hz and 2.78 × 10−14 V2/Hz at 2 Hz and 1 K H z frequencies, respectively. The optical constants were determined using the ellipsometry reflection data of samples using an RC2 and infrared (IR) VASE Mark-II ellipsometer from J A Woollam. Absorption, transmission and reflection data for a wavelength range of 900 nm–5000 nm were also determined. We also determined the optical constant values such as the real and imaginary parts of refractive index (n and k, respectively) and real and imaginary part of permittivity ( ε 1 and ε 2 , respectively) for wavelength ranges between 193 nm to 35 µm. An optical band gap of 1.03 eV was determined from absorption data and using Tauc's equation. In addition, the thermal conductivity of the film was analyzed using a Linseis thin film analyzer employing the 3ω method. The thermal conductivity of a 780 nm thick film was found to be 0.38 Wm−1K−1 at 300 K. Graphene foam prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method is a promising thermal interfacial material. However, the thermal properties of graphene foam highly depend on the experimental fabrication conditions during the chemical vapor deposition process. Aiming to reveal how to prepare the appropriate graphene foam for the various thermal management scenarios, the influence of experimental conditions on thermal properties of graphene foam was investigated. Furthermore, the contribution of thermal conductivity and thermal radiation to the effective thermal coefficient of graphene foam was carried out for comparison. The research results showed that the porosity and the cross-section shape of the struts of the growth template were two critical factors affecting the thermal transport of graphene foam, especially with the increase of temperature. In addition, the deposition time of graphene determined the wall thickness and affected the thermal conductivity directly. The thermal radiation contributed more than thermal conductivity when the temperature climbed continuously. Comparatively, the effective thermal coefficient of graphene foam composite with high porosity and circular-shape struts was much superior to that of others at high temperature. Ag-nanoparticle-reinforced polymethyl methacrylate (AgNP/PMMA) composites are widely used in healthcare, electronics, construction, transportation and many other fields. As the service temperature fluctuates easily, it is necessary to study the temperature effect on the properties of AgNP/PMMA composites. In this work, a preparation method of mixing and hot-pressing was used to fabricate multifunctional AgNP/PMMA composites that are suitable for large-scale industrial production. AgNPs are found to disperse homogeneously in the PMMA matrix. The thermal conductivity of the composite with 15 vol% AgNPs is 116.19% higher than that of PMMA and decreases as the temperature rises. Flexural strength increases first and then decreases with the rising of AgNP content and service temperature, while the flexural modulus decreases gradually. The minimum electrical resistivity of the composite achieves 1.37 × 10−3 Ω·m, with a low percolation threshold of 5 vol%, an improvement of nine orders of magnitude over PMMA. As detrimental byproduct waste generated during the production of fertilizers, phosphogypsum can be harmlessly treated by producing phosphogypsum-based cementitious materials (PGCs) for offshore well cementing in hydrate reservoirs. To be specific, the excellent mechanical properties of PGCs significantly promote wellbore stability. And the preeminent temperature control performance of PGCs helps to control undesirable gas channeling, increasing the formation stability of natural gas hydrate (NGH) reservoirs. Notably, to further enhance temperature control performance, foaming agents are added to PGCs to increase porosity, which however reduces the compressive strength and increases the risk of wellbore instability. Therefore, the synergetic effect between temperature control performance and mechanical properties should be quantitatively evaluated to enhance the overall performance of foamed PGCs for well cementing in NGH reservoirs. But so far, most existing studies of foamed PGCs are limited to experimental work and ignore the synergetic effect. Motivated by this, we combine experimental work with theoretical work to investigate the correlations between the porosity, temperature control performance, and mechanical properties of foamed PGCs. Specifically, the thermal conductivity and compressive strength of foamed PGCs are accurately determined through experimental measurements, then theoretical models are proposed to make up for the non-repeatability of experiments. The results show that, when the porosity increases from 6% to 70%, the 7 d and 28 d compressive strengths of foamed PGCs respectively decrease from 21.3 MPa to 0.9 MPa and from 23.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa, and the thermal conductivity decreases from 0.33 W·m−1·K−1 to 0.12 W·m−1·K−1. Additionally, an overall performance index evaluation system is established, advancing the application of foamed PGCs for well cementing in NGH reservoirs and promoting the recycling of phosphogypsum. The paper presents and discusses the results of a study of the thermal properties of cement composites with different contents of magnetite aggregate (0%, 20%, 40% and 60% by volume). The effect of grain size on the evaluated thermal properties was also investigated. For this purpose, concrete containing 50% by volume of magnetite aggregate with four different fractions (1–2 mm, 2–4 mm, 4–8 mm and 8–16 mm) was used. Thermal parameters were evaluated on specimens fully saturated with water and dried to a constant mass at 65 °C. The series with varying grain sizes of magnetite achieved thermal conductivity values in the range of 2.76–3.03 W/(m·K) and 2.00–2.21 W/(m·K) at full water saturation and after drying to a constant mass, respectively. In the case of the series with 20% magnetite by volume, the thermal conductivity was 2.65 W/(m·K) and 1.99 W/(m·K) for the material fully saturated with water and dried to a constant mass, respectively. The series with a 60% volume share of magnetite obtained values of this parameter of 3.47 W/(m·K) and 2.66 W/(m·K), respectively, under the same assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The thermal surface properties of graphenes and carbon materials are of crucial importance in the chemistry of materials, chemical engineering, and many industrial processes. Background: The determination of these surface properties is carried out using inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution, which leads to the retention volume of organic solvents adsorbed on solid surfaces. This experimental and fundamental parameter actually reflects the surface thermodynamic interactions between injected probes and solid substrates. Methods: The London dispersion equation and the Hamieh thermal model are used to quantify the London dispersive and polar surface energy of graphenes and carbon fibers as well their Lewis acid-base constants by introducing the coupling amphoteric constant of materials. Results: The London dispersive and polar acid-base surface energies, the free energy of adsorption, the polar enthalpy and entropy, and the Lewis acid-base constants of graphenes and carbon materials are determined. Conclusions: It is shown that graphene exhibited the highest values of London dispersive surface energy, polar surface energy, and Lewis acid-base constants. In a recent breakthrough in the field of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, the first synthesis of a single-atom-thick gold lattice of goldene has been reported through an innovative wet chemical removal of Ti3C2 from the layered Ti3AuC2. Inspired by this advancement, in this communication and for the first time, a comprehensive first-principles investigation using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) and machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) calculations has been conducted to delve into the stability, electronic, mechanical and thermal properties of the single-layer and free-standing goldene. The presented results confirm thermal stability at 700 K as well as remarkable dynamical stability of the stress-free and strained goldene monolayer. At the ground state, the elastic modulus and tensile strength of the goldene monolayer are predicted to be over 226 and 12 GPa, respectively. Through validated MLIP-based molecular dynamics calculations, it is found that at room temperature, the goldene nanosheet can exhibit anisotropic tensile strength over 9 GPa and a low lattice thermal conductivity around 10 ± 2 W/(m.K), respectively. We finally show that the native metallic nature of the goldene monolayer stays intact under large tensile strains. The combined insights from DFT and MLIP-based results provide a comprehensive understanding of the stability, mechanical, thermal and electronic properties of goldene nanosheets. Ambient pressure drying (APD) of silica aerogels has emerged as an attractive method adapting to large-scale production. Spring-back is a unique phenomenon during APD of silica aerogels with volume expansion after its shrinkage under capillary force. We attribute the intense spring-back at elevated drying temperatures to a dense structure formed on the surface and the formation of positive internal pressure. Furthermore, an APD-assisted foaming method with an in situ introduction of NH4HCO3 was proposed. NH4HCO3 decomposing at drying temperatures hastened the emergence of positive pressure, thereby increasing the expansion volume. Compared to the previous method, the porosity of silica aerogel increased from 82.2% to 92.6%, and mesopore volume from 1.79 cm3 g−1 to 4.54 cm3 g−1. By adjusting the amount of the silicon source, silica aerogels prepared by the APD-assisted foaming method generated higher volume expansion and lower thermal conductivity. After calcination to remove undecomposed ammonium salts, the hydrophobic silica aerogel with a density of 0.112 g cm−3 reached a mesopore volume of 5.07 cm3 g−1 and a thermal conductivity of 18.9 mW m−1·K−1. This strategy not only improves the thermal insulation properties, but also offers a significant advancement in tailoring silica aerogels with specific porosity and mesopore volume for various applications. Thermally stable high-performance phenolic resin aerogels (PRAs) are of great interest for thermal insulation because of their light weight, fire retardancy and low thermal conductivity. However, the drawbacks of PRA synthesis, such as long processing time, inherent brittleness and significant shrinkage during drying, greatly restrict their wide applications. In this work, PRAs were synthesized at ambient pressure through a near-net shape manufacturing technique, where boron-containing thermosetting phenolic resin (BPR) was introduced into the conventional linear phenolic resin (LPR) to improve the pore characteristics, mechanical properties and thermal performances. Compared with the traditional LPR-synthesized aerogel, the processing time and the linear shrinkage rate during the drying of the PRAs could be significantly reduced, which was attributed to the enhanced rigidity and the unique bimodal pore size distribution. Furthermore, no catastrophic failure and almost no mechanical degradation were observed on the PRAs, even with a compressive strain of up to 60% at temperatures ranging from 25 to 200 °C, indicating low brittleness and excellent thermo-mechanical stability. The PRAs also showed outstanding fire retardancy. On the other hand, the PRAs with a density of 0.194 g/cm3 possessed a high Young's modulus of 12.85 MPa and a low thermal conductivity of 0.038 W/(m·K). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an experimental investigation of nanocomposites composed of three ratios of epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) by weight. The 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 wt.% specimens were carefully manufactured, and their mechanical and thermal conductivity properties were examined. The tensile strength and modulus of epoxy/GNPs were enhanced by the large surface area of graphene nanoplatelets, causing crack deflection that created new fracture fronts and friction because of the rough fracture surface. However, the compressive strength was gradually reduced as GNP loading percentages increased. This was probably due to severe plastic yielding on the epoxy, leading to catastrophic axial splitting caused by premature fractures. Furthermore, the highest thermal conductivity was 0.1283 W/m-K, representing a 20.92% improvement over neat epoxy (0.1061 W/m-K) when 0.3 wt.% GNPs were added to the epoxy. This was because of efficient heat propagation in the GNPs due to electron movement through percolative paths. The tensile failure mode in epoxy/GNP nanocomposites showed a few deflected and bifurcated rough cracks and brittle, dimple-like fractures. This paper introduces a numerical methodology for classifying and identifying types of bio-based materials through experimental thermal characterization. In contrast to prevailing approaches that primarily focus on thermal conductivity, our characterization methodology encompasses several thermal parameters. In this paper, the physical characteristics of seven types of bio-based concrete were analyzed, focusing on the thermal properties of palm- and esparto-fiber-reinforced concrete. The proposed method uses artificial intelligence techniques, specifically the k-means clustering approach, to segregate data into homogeneous groups with shared thermal characteristics. This enables the elucidation of insights and recommendations regarding the utilization of bio-based insulation in building applications. The results show that the k-means algorithm is able to efficiently classify the reference concrete (RC) with a performance of up to 71%. Additionally, the technique is more accurate when retaining only six centroids, which, among other things, allows all the characteristics associated with each type of concrete to be grouped and identified. The traditional Si bonding layer in environmental barrier coatings has a low melting point (1414 °C), which is a significant challenge in meeting the requirements of the next generation higher thrust-to-weight ratio aero-engines. To seek new bonding layer materials with higher melting points, the mechanical properties of Y-Si and Gd-Si silicides were calculated by the first-principles method. Subsequently, empirical formulae were employed to compute the sound velocities, Debye temperatures, and the minimum coefficients of thermal conductivity for the YSi, Y5Si4, Y5Si3, GdSi, and Gd5Si4. The results showed that Y5Si4 has the best plasticity and ductility among all these materials. In addition, Gd5Si4 has the minimum Debye temperature (267 K) and thermal conductivity (0.43 W m−1 K−1) compared with others. The theoretical calculation results indicate that some silicides in the Y-Si and Gd-Si systems possess potential application value in high-temperature bonding layers for thermal and/or environmental barrier coating. In the realm of thermal interface materials (TIMs), high thermal conductivity and low density are key for effective thermal management and are particularly vital due to the growing compactness and lightweight nature of electronic devices. Efficient directional arrangement is a key control strategy to significantly improve thermal conductivity and comprehensive properties of thermal interface materials. In the present work, drawing inspiration from natural leaf and branch structures, a simple-to-implement approach for fabricating oriented thermal conductivity composites is introduced. Utilizing carbon fibers (CFs), known for their ultra-high thermal conductivity, as branches, this design ensures robust thermal conduction channels. Concurrently, boron nitride (BN) platelets, characterized by their substantial in-plane thermal conductivity, act as leaves. These components not only support the branches but also serve as junctions in the thermal conduction network. Remarkably, the composite achieves a thermal conductivity of 11.08 W/(m·K) with just an 11.1 wt% CF content and a 1.86 g/cm3 density. As one of the emerging nanomaterials, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) provide promising opportunities for diverse applications due to their unique properties, such as high thermal conductivity, immense inertness, and high-temperature durability, while the instability of BNNTs due to their high surface induces agglomerates susceptible to the loss of their advantages. Therefore, the proper functionalization of BNNTs is crucial to highlight their fundamental characteristics. Herein, a simplistic low-cost approach of BNNT surface modification through catechol-polyamine (CAPA) interfacial polymerization is postulated to improve its dispersibility on the polymeric matrix. The modified BNNT was assimilated as a filler additive with AlN/Al2O3 filling materials in a PDMS polymeric matrix to prepare a thermal interface material (TIM). The resulting composite exhibits a heightened isotropic thermal conductivity of 8.10 W/mK, which is a ~47.27% increase compared to pristine composite 5.50 W/mK, and this can be ascribed to the improved BNNT dispersion forming interconnected phonon pathways and the thermal interface resistance reduction due to its augmented compatibility with the polymeric matrix. Moreover, the fabricated composite manifests a fire resistance improvement of ~10% in LOI relative to the neat composite sample, which can be correlated to the thermal stability shift in the TGA and DTA data. An enhancement in thermal permanence is stipulated due to a melting point (Tm) shift of ∼38.5 °C upon the integration of BNNT-CAPA. This improvement can be associated with the good distribution and adhesion of BNNT-CAPA in the polymeric matrix, integrated with its inherent thermal stability, good charring capability, and free radical scavenging effect due to the presence of CAPA on its surface. Advanced electronics technology is moving towards smaller footprints and higher computational power. In order to achieve this, advanced packaging techniques are currently being considered, including organic, glass, and semiconductor-based substrates that allow for 2.5D or 3D integration of chips and devices. Metal-core substrates are a new alternative with similar properties to those of semiconductor-based substrates but with the added benefits of higher flexibility and metal ductility. This work comprehensively compares the thermal properties of a novel metal-based substrate, molybdenum, and silicon and fused silica glass substrates in the context of system-on-foil (SoF) integration. A simple electronic technique is used to simulate the heat generated by a typical CPU and to measure the heat dissipation properties of the substrates. The results indicate that molybdenum and silicon are able to effectively dissipate a continuous power density of 2.3 W/mm2 as the surface temperature only increases by ~15 °C. In contrast, the surface temperature of fused silica glass substrates increases by >140 °C for the same applied power. These simple techniques and measurements were validated with infrared camera measurements as well as through finite element analysis via COMSOL simulation. Building materials are responsible for significant CO2 emissions and energy consumption, both during production and operational phases. Earth as a building material offers a valuable alternative to conventional materials, as it naturally provides high hygrothermal comfort and air quality even with passive conditioning systems. However, disadvantages related to high density, conductivity, and wall thickness prevent its effective inclusion in the mainstream. This research explores enhancing the thermophysical properties of compressed earth blocks (CEBs) by using locally sourced natural materials. The study is framed in the Portuguese context and the natural materials involved are wheat straw (WS) as a by-product of wheat harvesting, cork granules (CGs) from bottle caps, and ground olive stone (GOSs) residues from olive oil production. Blocks were produced with different mixtures of these materials and the thermal response was examined in a hot box apparatus. Best results include a 20 and 26% reduction in thermal conductivity for mixtures with 5v.% CG and 10v.% GOS, respectively, and an associated reduction in bulk density of 3.8 and 5.4%. The proposed approach therefore proves to be effective in improving the key thermophysical characteristics of CEBs. In the realm of high-tech materials and energy applications, accurately measuring the transient heat flow at media boundaries and the internal thermal conductivity of materials in harsh heat exchange environments poses a significant challenge when using conventional direct measurement methods. Consequently, the study of photothermal parameter reconstruction in translucent media, which relies on indirect measurement techniques, has crucial practical value. Current research on reconstructing photothermal properties within participating media typically focuses on single-objective or time-invariant properties. There is a pressing need to develop effective methods for the simultaneous reconstruction of time-varying thermal flow fields and internal thermal conductivity at the boundaries of participating media. This paper introduces a computational model based on the numerical simulation theory of internal heat transfer systems in participating media, stochastic particle swarm optimization algorithms, and Kalman filter technology. The model aims to enable the simultaneous reconstruction of various thermal parameters within the target medium. Our results demonstrate that under varying levels of measurement noise, the inversion results for different target parameters exhibit slight oscillations around the true values, leading to a reduction in reconstruction accuracy. The long-term operation of motors induces substantial alterations in the surface conductivity and nonlinear coefficient of anti-corona paint, diminishing its efficacy and jeopardizing the longevity of large motors. Hence, the development of high-performance anti-corona paint holds paramount importance in ensuring motor safety. In this study, we integrate two nano-fillers, namely silicon carbide (SiC) and organic montmorillonite (O-MMT), into a composite matrix comprising micron silicon carbide and epoxy resin (SiC/EP). Subsequently, three distinct types of anti-corona paint are formulated: SiC/EP, Nano-SiC/EP, and O-MMT/SiC/EP. Remarkably, O-MMT/SiC/EP exhibits a glass transition temperature about 25 °C higher than that of SiC/EP, underscoring its superior thermal properties. Moreover, the introduction of nano-fillers markedly augments the surface conductivity of the anti-corona paint. Aging tests, conducted across varying temperatures, unveil a notable reduction in the fluctuation range of surface conductivity post-aging. Initially, the nonlinear coefficients exhibit a declining trend, succeeded by an ascending trajectory. The O-MMT/SiC/EP composite displays a maximum nonlinearity coefficient of 1.465 and a minimum of 1.382. Thermal energy storage (TES) using phase change materials (PCMs) is one of the potential solutions for stockpiling thermal energy and utilizing it for different applications, which results in effective energy usage. The main drawback of organic PCMs in practical applications is poor heat transfer due to low thermal conductivity (TC). Therefore, investigations into nano-enhanced PCMs are being explored to improve their thermophysical properties. In this work, the various thermophysical characteristics of nano-enhanced lauryl alcohol as a PCM were investigated using carbon-based and metallic nanoparticles. The results indicated that the addition of nanoparticles improved its thermal properties and affected other physical properties, such as viscosity. The latent heat was degraded with the addition of nanoparticles. The results revealed that by adding MWCNTs and CuO nanoparticles, a maximum of 82.6% and 49.6% improvement in TC was achieved, respectively. The maximum drop in latent heat during melting and freezing for the PCM with MWCNTs was about 10.1% and 9.3%, respectively, whereas for the PCM with CuO, they were about 11% and 10.3%, respectively. The lowest supercooling for the PCM with MWCNTs and CuO nanoparticles was 8.6 and 8.3 °C, respectively. With the development of microelectronics products with high density and high power, it is urgent to improve the electrical and thermal conductivity of electronic paste to achieve the new requirements of packaging materials. In this work, a new synthesis method of Ag-MWCNTs was designed: Firstly, carboxylated MWCNTs and stannous chloride were used as raw materials to prepare high-loading-rate Sn-MWCNT composite material to ensure the high loading rate of metal on the MWCNT surface. Then, Ag-MWCNT composite material was prepared by the chemical displacement method to solve the problem of the low loading rate of silver nanoparticles on the MWCNT surface. On the basis of this innovation, we analyzed and compared the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of Ag-MWCNT composite electronic paste. Compared with the electronic paste without adding Ag-MWCNTs, the resistivity was reduced by 77%, the thermal conductivity was increased by 66%, and the shear strength was increased by 15%. Therefore, the addition of Ag-MWCNTs effectively improves the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of the paste, making it a promising and competitive choice for new packaging materials in the future. Building material manufacturers must support new production models that encourage the manufacture of more efficient and sustainable products. This includes thinking about savings in the use of raw materials, a contribution to the energy efficiency of buildings during their useful life, and a reduction in the generation and deposit of waste in landfills. In this research, an analysis of the thermal properties of gypsum composites added with plastic waste is carried out using the most common methods, the steady state method and the transient plane source method, and the effect of water saturation on these composites is tested. The results show an improvement in the thermal performance of the composites (values reduced with respect to the reference by 4–7%), despite their heterogeneity, as well as a variation in the measurements carried out, depending on the method used for the measurements (variation up to 10%). It is also found that the degree of humidity negatively affects the thermal conductivity coefficient but, on the contrary, this coefficient is not altered in the composites with plastic waste, due to their lower hygroscopicity. Therefore, it is considered that the proposed eco-plasters are a good alternative to traditional plasters, with which to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the current European directives on waste and circular economy. The optimization of structure and thermal properties in 3D-printed insulation materials remains an underexplored area in the literature. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of 3D printing on the thermal properties of manufactured cellular composites. The materials studied were closed-cell foams with a complex cell structure based on the Voronoi cell model, manufactured using incremental technology (3D printing). The influence of the cellular structure of the composite, the type of material used, and the number of layers in the composite structure on its thermal properties, i.e., thermal conductivity coefficient, thermal resistance, and coefficient of heat transfer, was analyzed. Samples of different types of thermosetting resins, characterized by different values of emissivity coefficient, were analyzed. It was shown that both the type of material, the number of layers of the composite, and the number of pores in its structure significantly affect its thermal insulating properties. Thermal conductivity and permeability depended on the number of layers and decreased up to 30% as the number of layers increased from one to four, while thermal resistance increased to 35%. The results indicate that material structure is key in regulating thermal conduction. Controlling the number of cells in a given volume of composite (and thus the size of the air cells) and the number of layers in the composite can be an effective tool in designing materials with high insulation performance. Among the prototype composites produced, the best thermal performance was that of the metalized four-layer cellular composites (λ = 0.035 ± 0.002 W/m·K, Rc = 1.15 ± 0.02 K·m2/W, U = 0.76 ± 0.01 W/m2·K). Developing new materials to be applied in extreme environments is an opportunity and a challenge for the future. High entropy alloys are new materials that seem promising approaches to work in nuclear fusion reactors. In this work, FeTaTiVW high entropy alloys were developed and characterized with Molecular Dynamic and Hybrid Molecular Dynamic Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation results show that phase separation originates a lower potential energy per atom and a high level of segregation compared to those of a uniform solid solution. Moreover, the experimental diffractogram of the milled powder shows the formation of a body-centred cubic-type structure and the presence of TiO2. In addition, the microstructure of the consolidated material evidenced three phases: W-rich, Ti-rich, and a phase with all the elements. This phase separation observed in the microstructure agrees with the Hybrid Molecular Dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. Moreover, the consolidated material's thermal conductivity and specific heat are almost constant from 25 °C to 1000 °C, and linear expansion increases with increasing temperature. On the other hand, specific heat and thermal expansion values are in between CuCrZr and W values (materials chosen for the reactor walls). The FeTaTiVW high entropy alloy evidences a ductile behaviour at 1000 °C. Therefore, the promising thermal properties of this system can be attributed to the multiple phases and systems with different compositions of the same elements, which is exciting for future developments. The thermal performance of the building envelope is significant in energy-efficient construction. Because concrete is widely used in civil engineering, options to reduce its R-value should be considered. This study explores the thermal and structural properties of aerogel-enhanced concrete. Silica aerogel powder was mixed with fine-grained concrete at 15 vol.%. Two series of samples were prepared to identify the preferred technology. The first series of samples were mixed without isopropyl alcohol; for the second series, the alcohol was mixed with silica aerogel before mixing into the dry mix. The thermal conductivity, compressive strength, and bending resistance of the specimens were measured. The presence of silica aerogel admix resulted in a decrease in the compressive strength of the specimens by 30% compared with that of the reference samples and a reduction in the bending strength of the samples by 9% compared with that of the reference samples. For the first and second series of samples, the K-values of the aerogel-enhanced specimens varied in the range from 0.83 W/(m·K) to 1.13 W/(m·K), respectively. To further decrease the thermal conductivity, gypsum putty was then added to the specimens, resulting in the K-values further decreasing to 0.64 W/(m·K) and 0.84 W/(m·K), respectively. The calculation of heat losses through 1 m2 of the aerogel-enhanced concrete wall was performed. It has been shown that energy expenses for heating can be lowered by 30%. The calculation of the greenhouse gas emissions from the combustion of fuel required for heating was also considered. The emissions decreased by 30.2% compared with the reference sample. This study investigates a sustainable coating method for modified expanded polystyrene (MEPS) beads to improve the thermal insulation of lightweight concrete intended for wall application. The method employed in this study is based on a novel coating technique that represents a significant advancement in modifying Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) beads for enhanced lightweight concrete. This study experimentally assessed the energy-saving capabilities of MEPS concrete in comparison to control groups of uncoated EPS beads and normal concrete by analysing early-stage temperature, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, heat flux, and thermal diffusivity. The thermal conductivity of MEPS concrete is approximately 40% lower than that of normal concrete, demonstrating its usefulness in enhancing insulation. The heat flux calculated for MEPS concrete is significantly reduced (approximately 35%), and it has a 20% lower specific heat capacity than ordinary concrete, indicating a reduction in energy transfer through the material and, thus, potential energy-efficiency benefits. Furthermore, the study discovered that all test objects have very low thermal diffusivity values (less than 0.5 × 10−6 m2/s), indicating a slower heat transport through the material. The sustainable coating method utilized fly ash-enhanced thermal efficiency and employed recycled materials, hence decreasing the environmental impact. The relatively low melting point of a traditional Si bonding layer limits the upper servicing temperature of environmental barrier coatings (EBC). To explore suitable high temperature bonding layers and expedite the development of EBC, first-principles calculation was used to evaluate the mechanical properties and thermal conductivity of HfSi2, HfSi, Hf5Si4, Hf3Si2, and Hf2Si with much higher melting points than that of Si. Among them, HfSi2 has the lowest modulus capable of good modulus matching with SiC substrate. In addition, these Hf-Si compounds have much lower high temperature thermal conductivity with Hf2Si being the lowest of 0.63 W m−1 K−1, which is only half of Si, capable of improved heat insulation. Not only can perovskite solar cells be exposed to high temperatures, up to 80 °C, depending on the operating environment, but absorbed energy is lost as heat, so it is important to have thermal stability for commercialization. However, in the case of the recently reported p-i-n structure solar cell, most of the electron and hole transport layers are composed of organic materials vulnerable to heat transfer, so the light absorption layer may be continuously exposed to high temperatures when the solar cell is operated. In this study, we attempted to improve the thermal conductivity of the electron transport layer using phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) containing zinc oxide (ZnO). As a result, the thermal conductivity was improved by more than 7.4% and 23.5% by adding 6.57vol% and 22.38vol% of ZnO to PCBM, respectively. In addition, the insertion of ZnO resulted in changes in the electron transport behavior and energy level of the electron transport layer. As a result, it was confirmed that not only could the temperature stability of the perovskite thin film be improved, but the efficiency of the solar cell could also be improved from 14.12% to 17.97%. Reduced graphene oxide, due to its structure, exhibits anisotropic properties, which are particularly evident in electrical and thermal conductivity. This study focuses on examining the influence of reduced graphene oxide in silicon carbide on these properties in directions perpendicular and parallel to the direction of the aligned rGO flakes in produced composites. Reduced graphene oxide is characterized by very high in-plane thermal and electrical conductivity. It was observed that the addition of rGO increases thermal conductivity from 64 W/mK (reference sample) up to 98 W/mK for a SiC–3 wt.% rGO composite in the direction parallel to the rGO flakes. In the perpendicular direction, the values were slightly lower, reaching up to 84 W/mK. The difference observed in electrical conductivity values is more significant and is 1–2 orders of magnitude higher for the flakes' alignment direction. The measured electrical conductivity increased from 1.2710−8 S/m for the reference SiC sinter up to 1.55 × 10−5 S/m and 1.2410−4 S/m for the composites with 3 wt.% rGO for the perpendicular and parallel directions, respectively. This represents an enhancement of four orders of magnitude, with a clearly visible influence of the anisotropy of the rGO. The porous TiCO ceramic was synthesized through a one-step sintering method, utilizing phenolic resin, TiO2 powder, and KCl foaming agent as raw materials. Ni(NO3)2·6H2O was incorporated as a catalyst to facilitate the carbothermal reaction between the pyrolytic carbon and TiO2 powder. The influence of Ni(NO3)2·6H2O catalyst content (0, 5, 10 wt.% of the TiO2 powder) on the microstructure, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity of the resultant porous TiCO ceramic was examined. X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed the formation of TiC and TiO in all samples, with an increase in the peak of TiC and a decrease in that of TiO as the Ni(NO3)2·6H2O content increased from 0% to 10%. Scanning electron microscopy results demonstrated a morphological change in the pore wall, transforming from a honeycomb-like porous structure composed of well-dispersed carbon and TiC-TiO particles to rod-shaped TiC whiskers, interconnected with each other as the catalyst content increased from 0% to 10%. Mercury intrusion porosimetry results proved a dual modal pore-size distribution of the samples, comprising nano-scale pores and micro-scale pores. The micro-scale pore size of the samples minorly changed, while the nano-scale pore size escalated from 52 nm to 138 nm as the catalyst content increased from 0 to 10%. The morphology of the pore wall and nano-scale pore size primarily influenced the compressive strength and thermal conductivity of the samples by affecting the load-bearing capability and solid heat-transfer conduction path, respectively. Molten salt-based nanofluid is a thermal storage and heat transfer medium for concentrated solar thermal power plants formed by adding nanoparticles to molten salt, which can enhance the thermal performance of molten salt. However, the nanoparticles tend to aggregate in nanofluids, causing changes in thermal properties. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the effect of morphological characteristics of aggregates on the thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of molten salt-based nanofluids. The results show that the aggregated nanoparticles cause a greater increase in thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity than dispersed nanoparticles. Additionally, the increase in fractal dimension leads to thermal conductivity reduction, while there is no clear correlation between the fractal dimension and specific heat capacity. New insights into the thermal properties of aggregated nanofluids are provided by analyzing the contribution of material components, heat flux fluctuation modes, and energy compositions. It is found that the thermal conductivity of aggregated nanofluids is mainly dominated by the base liquid and collision term. However, the specific heat is not related to the variation in the contribution of different energy compositions. Moreover, compared to the dispersed nanofluid, the increased specific heat capacity of aggregated nanofluids is attributed to the thicker semi-solid layer. In this regard, the large-scale use of earth represents a promising option, not only due to its widespread availability but especially for its minimal embodied energy. However, to enhance its durability, it is necessary to stabilize the mixtures of raw materials. This study analyzes experimental systems based on earth stabilized with bio-based polymers to evaluate their thermal properties and how these vary depending on the selected mix-design. The experimental measurements showed thermal properties comparable to conventional materials. As expected, thermal conductivity increases when porosity decreases. The minimum value is equal to 0.216 W/m·K vs. a porosity of 43.5%, while the maximum is 0.507 W/m·K vs. a porosity of 33.2%. However, the data obtained for individual systems may vary depending on the topological characteristics, which were analyzed through a model for granular materials. The thermodynamic and kinetic simulations based on the re-assessment of the thermodynamic and kinetic database of the Ni-Ti-Cu system were employed to predict the phenomena of mechanical alloying, spark plasma sintering and thermal properties of the intriguing Ni-Ti-Cu system. Thermodynamic calculations are presented for the stable and unstable phases of NiTiCu materials and support a correlation with the evolving microstructure during the technological process. Also, the thermal conductivity, the thermal diffusivity and the specific heat of spark plasma sintered and aged Cu-alloyed NiTi-based shape memory alloys (NiTiCu) with two compositions, Ni45Ti50Cu5 and Ni40Ti50Cu10, are evaluated and the influence of mechanical alloying and precipitates on thermal properties is discussed. Measurements of these thermal properties were carried out from 25 °C up to 175 °C using the laser flash method, as well as differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal hysteresis of the 20 mm diameter samples was between 8.8 and 24.5 °C. The observed T0 temperatures from DSC experimental transformation features are in reasonable accordance with the thermodynamic predictions. The determined k values are between 20.04 and 26.87 W/m K and in agreement with the literature results. The mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber interface material (TIM) with a vertical array was prepared by using mesophase pitch-based short-cut fibers (MPCFs) and 3016 epoxy resin as raw materials and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as additives through electrostatic flocking and resin pouring molding process. The microstructure and thermal properties of the interface were analyzed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), laser thermal conductivity and thermal infrared imaging methods. The results indicate that the plate spacing and fusing voltage have a significant impact on the orientation of the arrays formed by mesophase pitch-based carbon fibers. While the orientation of the carbon fiber array has a minimal impact on the shore hardness of TIM, it does have a direct influence on its thermal conductivity. At a flocking voltage of 20 kV and plate spacing of 12 cm, the interface material exhibited an optimal thermal conductivity of 24.47 W/(m·K), shore hardness of 42 A and carbon fiber filling rate of 6.30 wt%. By incorporating 2% carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the epoxy matrix, the interface material achieves a thermal conductivity of 28.97 W/(m·K) at a flocking voltage of 30 kV and plate spacing of 10 cm. This represents a 52.1% increase in thermal conductivity compared to the material without TIM. The material achieves temperature uniformity within 10 s at the same heat source temperatures, which indicates a good application prospect in IC packaging and electronic heat dissipation. The effects of octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS), fumed silica, and silica aerogel on the thermal insulation properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber were studied. On this basis, two kinds of fillers with good performances were selected to study the thermal insulation of an EPDM full-formula system. The results show that the addition of fumed silica or silica aerogel had a positive effect on the thermal insulation performance of EPDM rubber and its composite. A 30 wt% silica aerogel can be well dispersed in the EPDM rubber system and with a lower thermal conductivity compared with fumed silica. EPDM composite with 23.4 wt% fumed silica can produce more char residues at 1000 °C than at 500 °C in a burn-through test and formed the compact and porous char at 1000 °C, which had a lowest thermal conductivity. EPDM composite with fumed silica cannot be burned through 1000 °C burning, and comparison with silica aerogel revealed that it achieved the lowest back temperature and had a temperature of 388 °C after 800 s. In the present work, a metal–matrix composite was casted using the LM13 aluminum alloy, which is most widely used for casting automotive components. Such applications require materials to withstand high operating temperatures and perform reliably without compromising their properties. In this regard, particulate-reinforced composites have gained widespread adaptability. The particulate reinforcements used comprise of one of the widely available industrial by-products. which is fly ash, along with the abundantly available quartz. Hybrid composites are fabricated through the economical liquid route that is widely used in mass production. Though there are numerous published research articles investigating the mechanical properties of metal–matrix composites, very few investigated the thermal properties of the composites. In the present work, thermal properties such as thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of cast hybrid composites were evaluated. The particulate reinforcements were added in varied weight percentages to the molten LM13 alloy and were dispersed uniformly using a power-driven stirrer. The melt with the dispersed particulate reinforcements was then poured into a thoroughly dried sand mold, and the melt was allowed to solidify. The quality of the castings was ascertained through density evaluation followed by a microstructural examination. It was found that the composites with only the fly ash particles as a reinforcement were less dense in comparison to the composites cast with the quartz particulate reinforcement. However, the hybrid composite, with both particulate reinforcements were dense. The microstructure revealed a refined grain structure. The thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity values were lower for the composites cast with only the fly ash reinforcement. On the other hand, the composites cast with only quartz as the particulate reinforcement exhibited higher thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity. The specific heat capacity was found to be lower for the fly ash-reinforced composites and higher for the quartz-reinforced composites in comparison to the LM13 base matrix alloy. However, the highest value of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity were reported for the hybrid composites with a 10 wt.% inclusion of both fly ash and quartz particulate reinforcements. This study aims to explore the viability of adding a hybrid blend of eggshell and banana fibers treated with NaOH to improve the structural characteristics of epoxy composites. In order to determine their appropriateness for different applications, the study includes assessments of mechanical performance, water permeability, and heat transfer properties. Chicken eggshell was used to make calcined eggshell particulate (CEP), and bananas were used to obtain processed banana fibers (TBF). For the creation of bio-composites, NaOH-treated banana fiber (30 wt.%) was integrated into an epoxy matrix with different weight percentages of CEP (like 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 wt.%) through the hand layup with a vacuum backing technique. Examination of the data revealed that, in comparison to epoxy with no reinforcement, the addition of bio-fillers improved the thermal insulation (4 wt.% of CEP exhibits 0.052 W/mk), water absorption (4 wt.% of CEP produced 5.31%), flexural strength (20 wt.% of CEP exhibit 36.57 MPa), and modulus (12 wt.% of CEP exhibit 300.12 MPa) of the hybrids. This suggests that by lowering the conductivity of the bio-based composites, the inclusion of these bio-based reinforcements improved their thermal insulation ability. One crucial property of concrete, particularly in construction, is its thermal conductivity, which impacts heat transfer through conduction. For example, reducing the thermal conductivity of concrete can lead to energy savings in buildings. Various techniques exist for measuring the thermal conductivity of materials, but there is limited discussion in the literature about suitable methods for concrete. In this study, the transient line source method is employed to evaluate the thermal conductivity of concrete samples with natural and synthetic fibers after 7 and 28 days of curing. The results indicate that concrete with hemp fiber generally exhibits higher thermal conductivity values, increasing by 48% after 28 days of curing, while synthetic fibers have a minimal effect. In conclusion, this research opens the door to using natural alternatives like hemp fiber to improve concrete's thermal properties, providing alternatives for thermo-active foundations and geothermal energy piles which require high thermal conductivities. The efficiency, durability, and overall performance of a car engine are influenced by several critical factors. The quality and properties of engine oil play a crucial role, and oil is used in internal combustion engines for lubrication and cooling purposes. This research study aimed to compare the impact of fullerene-C60 (99.5%), Fe2O3, and TiO2 nanoparticles on the thermal properties of C.A.L.T.E.X. red engine oil with grades 10W30, 20W40, and 20W50. This study focused on the effect of a nanoparticle concentration of 0.01 wt.% in different engine oil grades at various temperature values of 30–120 °C. The nanofluids were prepared using the two-step direct mixing method, employing a magnetic stirrer and an ultrasonicator, ensuring uniform distribution of nanoparticles in the base fluids. The thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and volumetric heat capacity of the base fluids and nanofluids were measured using the FLUCON LAMBDA thermal conductivity meter. Additionally, flash points were measured using the flash point tester. Solid–liquid organic phase-change micro/nanocapsules are potential candidates for energy storage. Recently, significant progress has been made regarding phase-change micro/nanocapsules in terms of their synthesis, properties, and applications. Extensive research has been conducted to enhance their thermal properties, such as thermal storage capacity, thermal conductivity, and thermal reliability. However, factors that influence the thermal properties of micro/nanocapsules have received little attention. This study presents a comprehensive review of phase-change micro/nanocapsules focusing on their thermal properties and their influencing factors. In addition, the thermal properties of the major solid–liquid organic pure phase-change materials are summarized. Furthermore, common micro/nanoencapsulation methods and their influence on the thermal properties were analyzed. Finally, the potential applications of these phase-change micro/nanocapsules were also investigated. The article discusses the effect of additives of waste mineral wool fibers on geopolymer binder. This is an important study in terms of the possibility of recycling mineral wool waste. The paper describes an effective method for pulverizing the wool and the methodology for forming geopolymer samples, labeled G1 for glass-wool-based geopolymer and G2 for stone-wool-based geopolymer. The compressive and flexural strengths and thermal conductivity coefficient of the geopolymer with the addition of mineral fibers were determined. The key element of the article is to verify whether the addition of mineral wool fibers positively affects the properties of the geopolymer. The results obtained prove that the addition of fibers significantly improves the flexural strength. For the G1 formulation, the ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength is 18.7%. However, for G2 samples, an even better ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength values of 26.3% was obtained. The average thermal conductivity coefficient obtained was 1.053 W/(m·K) for the G1 series samples and 0.953 W/(m·K) for the G2 series samples. The conclusions obtained show a correlation between the porosity and compressive strength and thermal conductivity coefficient.
