Objective. Develop a prototype on-line positron emission tomography (PET) scanner and evaluate its capability of on-line imaging and intra-fractionated proton-induced radioactivity range measurement. Approach. Each detector consists of 32 × 32 array of 2 × 2 × 30 mm3 Lutetium–Yttrium Oxyorthosilicate scintillators with single-scintillator-end readout through a 20 × 20 array of 3 × 3 mm2 Silicon Photomultipliers. The PET can be configurated with a full-ring of 20 detectors for conventional PET imaging or a partial-ring of 18 detectors for on-line imaging and range measurement. All detector-level readout and processing electronics are attached to the backside of the system gantry and their output signals are transferred to a field-programable-gate-array based system electronics and data acquisition that can be placed 2 m away from the gantry. The PET imaging performance and radioactivity range measurement capability were evaluated by both the offline study that placed a radioactive source with known intensity and distribution within a phantom and the online study that irradiated a phantom with proton beams under different radiation and imaging conditions. Main results. The PET has 32 cm diameter and 6.5 cm axial length field-of-view (FOV), ∼2.3–5.0 mm spatial resolution within FOV, 3% sensitivity at the FOV center, 18%–30% energy resolution, and ∼9 ns coincidence time resolution. The offline study shows the PET can determine the shift of distal falloff edge position of a known radioactivity distribution with the accuracy of 0.3 ± 0.3 mm even without attenuation and scatter corrections, and online study shows the PET can measure the shift of proton-induced positron radioactive range with the accuracy of 0.6 ± 0.3 mm from the data acquired with a short-acquisition (60 s) and low-dose (5 MU) proton radiation to a human head phantom. This study demonstrated the capability of intra-fractionated PET imaging and radioactivity range measurement and will enable the investigation on the feasibility of intra-fractionated, range-shift compensated adaptive proton therapy. The VEGA-3 laser system at the Centro de Láseres Pulsados delivers laser pulses up to 1 PW at 1 Hz repetition rate, focused to intensities up to 2.5 × 10 20 W cm−2. A versatile and compact solid target suitable for up to 0.05 Hz is presented which can operate in the challenging petawatt laser environment close to the laser-plasma interaction. Strips are spooled in a tape target system to deliver a solid density target to the laser focus for every shot. Results are presented for different tape materials and thicknesses, and a shot-to-shot standard deviation of the cut-off energy of 1.5% was obtained for Kapton reinforced aluminium tapes of 9 µ m thickness. Experimental ion spectra are recorded by a Thomson Parabola Ion Spectrometer coupled with a scintillator screen; and an antenna array is used for the characterization of electromagnetic pulses. Introduction. Dispersion in an accelerator quantifies the deviation of the proton trajectory when there is a momentum deviation. We present for the first time a safe method of measuring dispersion in the clinic, using a scintillator detector and the momentum deviations within a spill. This is an important accelerator quantity as we found that this is the reason behind the large dose fluctuation in our absolute dosimetry measurement. Methods. Dispersions are measured for nine energies in a Hitachi ProBeat system at three locations (isocenter and at two profile monitors) and at two gantry angles (0 and 90 degrees) by first measuring the spot position and momentum drift within a spill. The spot position drift is measured by the XRV-4000 at the isocenter, and by the two profile monitors located at 0.57 and 2.27 m from the isocenter. The momentum drift is calculated from the intra-spill range drift which is measured using the Ranger accessory. The dispersion at isocenter and its gradient are calculated using the weighted least square regression on the measured dispersions at the three locations. A constraint is formulated on the dispersion and its gradient to ensure minimal intra-spill spot position deviation around the isocenter. Results. The measured intra-spill range and spot positional drift at isocenter are less than 0.25 mm and 0.7 mm respectively. The momentum spread calculated from the range drift are less than 0.08%. The dispersion at the isocenter ranged from 0.50 to 4.30 m and the zero-crossing happens upstream of isocenter for all energies. 2 of the 9 energies (168.0 and 187.5 MeV) violated the constraint and has an intra-spill spot positional deviation greater than 1.0 within 5 cm from the isocenter. Conclusion. This measurement is recommended as part of commissioning and annual quality assurance for accelerator monitoring and to ensure intra-spill spot deviations remain low. Time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) detectors improve the signal-to-noise ratio of PET images by limiting the position of the generation of two 511 keV gamma-rays in space using the arrival time difference between the two photons. Unfortunately, bismuth germanate (BGO), widely used in conventional PET detectors, was limited as a TOF PET scintillator due to the relatively slow decay time of the scintillation photons. However, prompt Cerenkov light in BGO has been identified in addition to scintillation photons. Using Cerenkov photons for timing has significantly improved the coincidence timing resolution (CTR) of BGO. Based on this, further research on improving the CTR for a BGO-based TOF PET system is being actively conducted. Wrapping materials for BGO pixels have primarily employed white reflectors to most efficiently collect scintillation light. White reflectors have customarily been used as reflectors for BGO pixels even after Cerenkov light began to be utilized for timing calculations in pixel-level experiments. However, when the arrival-time differences of the two 511 keV annihilations photons were measured with pure Cerenkov radiators, painting the lateral sides of the radiators black can improve CTR by suppressing the reflection of Cerenkov photons. The use of BGO for TOF PET detectors requires simultaneously minimizing scintillation loss for good energy information and suppressing reflected Cerenkov photons for better timing performance. Thus, reflectors for BGO pixels should be optimized for better timing and energy performance. In this study, colored polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tapes with discontinuous reflectance values at specific wavelengths were applied as a BGO reflector. We hypothesized that CTR could be enhanced by selectively suppressing reflected Cerenkov photons with an optimum colored reflector on the BGO pixel while minimizing scintillation photon loss. CTRs were investigated utilizing white and three colors (yellow, red, and green) PTFE tapes as a reflector. In addition, black-painted PTFE tape and enhanced specular reflector film were investigated as reference reflector materials. When 3 × 3 × 20 mm3 BGO pixels were wrapped with the yellow PTFE reflector, the CTR was significantly improved to 365 ± 5 ps from 403 ± 14 ps measured with the conventional white PTFE reflector. Adequate energy information was still obtained with only 4.1% degradation in light collection compared to the white reflector. Recently, the remarkable advances in thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted much attention due to their 100% exciton utilization efficiency in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Although the commercialization of TADF materials is at an early stage, they exhibit enormous potential for next-generation OLEDs due to the comparable electroluminescence performance to metal of their phosphorescent complex counterparts, but without the presence of precious metal elements. This review summarizes the different types of TADF small molecules with various photophysical properties and the state-of-the-art molecular design strategies. Furthermore, the device engineering is discussed, and emerging optoelectronic applications, such as organic light-emitting electrochemical cells, organic lasing, and organic scintillators, are introduced. Objective. Existing dual-layer flat panel detectors (DL-FPDs) use a thin scintillator layer to preferentially detect low-energy x-rays, followed by a permanent Cu filter to absorb residual low-energy x-rays, and finally, a thicker scintillator layer to preferentially detect high-energy x-rays. The image outputs of the two scintillator layers can be jointly processed for dual-energy (DE) planar and cone-beam CT imaging. In clinical practice, a given FPD is often used for not only DE imaging but also routine single-energy (SE) imaging. With the permanent Cu layer, the total x-ray absorption is unsatisfactory for SE imaging since more than 30% of x-rays can be lost in the Cu layer. The purpose of this work was to demonstrate the benefits of using a removable filter material in DL-FPDs for SE and DE imaging applications. Approach. The proposed detector contains a removable filter between the two scintillator layers. The filter can be either a chamber filled with a liquid high- Z eff material or a removable solid filter. When DE imaging is not clinically indicated, the DL-FPD can switch to a high-efficiency SE imaging mode by retracting the filter from the inter-scintillator space. For commonly available filter materials (iodine, gadolinium, and Cu), their optimal area densities were theoretically calculated for both water-bone decomposition and water-iodine decomposition DE imaging tasks. Preliminary experimental studies were also performed to compare the SE performance of the proposed DL-FPD with the existing DL-FPD with the permanent Cu filter and study the stability of the liquid filter on a rotating gantry. Main results. The optimal filter material was found to be an iodine solution (approximately 375 mg cm−2). With this liquid filter in place, the proposed DL-FPD has equivalent or better DE imaging performance compared with the existing DL-FPD with the Cu filter. When the filter is removed from the inter-scintillator space for SE imaging, the total x-ray absorption efficiency of the proposed DL-FPD ranges from 73% (100 kVp) to 54% (140 kVp), compared with 51% (100 kVp) to 41% (140 kVp) for the existing DL-FPD with a permanent 1 mm Cu filter. Significance. The removable filter provides a boost to the total x-ray absorption efficiency of DL-FPDs for SE imaging without compromising DE imaging. Objective. Together with novel photodetector technologies and emerging electronic front-end designs, scintillator material research is one of the key aspects to obtain ultra-fast timing in time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET). In the late 1990s, Cerium-doped lutetium–yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) has been established as the state-of-the-art PET scintillator due to its fast decay time, high light yield and high stopping power. It has been shown that co-doping with divalent ions, such as Ca 2+ and Mg 2+, is beneficial for its scintillation characteristics and timing performance. Therefore, this work aims to identify a fast scintillation material to combine it with novel photosensor technologies to push the state of the art in TOF-PET. Approach. This study evaluates commercially available LYSO:Ce,Ca and LYSO:Ce,Mg samples manufactured by Taiwan Applied Crystal Co., LTD regarding their rise and decay times as well as their coincidence time resolution (CTR) with both ultra-fast high-frequency (HF) readout and commercially available readout electronics, i.e. the TOFPET2 ASIC. Main results. The co-doped samples exhibit state-of-the-art rise times of on average 60 ps and effective decay times of on average 35 ns. Using the latest technological improvements made on NUV-MT SiPMs by Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Broadcom Inc., a 3 × 3 × 19 mm3 LYSO:Ce,Ca crystal achieves a CTR of 95 ps (FWHM) with ultra-fast HF readout and 157 ps (FWHM) with the system-applicable TOFPET2 ASIC. Evaluating the timing limits of the scintillation material, we even show a CTR of 56 ps (FWHM) for small 2 × 2 × 3 mm3 pixels. A complete overview of the timing performance obtained with different coatings (Teflon, BaSO4) and different crystal sizes coupled to standard Broadcom AFBR-S4N33C013 SiPMs will be presented and discussed. This work thoroughly evaluates commercially available co-doped LYSO:Ce crystals and, in combination with novel NUV-MT SiPMs, shows a TOF performance that significantly exceeds the current state of the art. The effect of n = 1 magnetic perturbations (MPs) on prompt fast ion losses in DIII-D has been investigated using the light ion beam probe technique. The effect of normalized beta, β n , and the plasma response to the MPs is studied for several MP spectra. Magnetics data show a strong dependence of plasma response to β n that depends on the phase difference in perturbation coils, Δ ϕ U L . For most phases, the response increases with β n , however, the response is suppressed for phases between 180∘ and 240∘. Experimental data from scintillator based fast ion loss detectors shows that relative fluctuation of lost ions (20%–30% of the steady signal) does not diminish across the L- to H-mode transition for Δ ϕ U L = 240 ∘ , despite the 34% decrease in radial response field and 50% decrease in poloidal response field. Simulations of the DIII-D discharges using M3D-C1 and ASCOT5 find that prompt losses from neutral beam injection in each investigated case hit the first wall at several concentrated locations: the vessel floor, midplane diagnostic ports, vessel ceiling, and inner wall. Simulated losses from co-injection neutral beams are born outside the last closed flux surface, corresponding to radial orbit displacements of 3–6 cm due to the MPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This presentation examines the energetic particle transport induced by saturated kink modes and sawtooth crashes in JET deuterium plasmas. It is known that kink mode-resonant transport and phase-space redistribution from sawtooth crashes can drive strong fast ion transport with dependencies on particle pitch and energy. Measurements with JET’s Faraday cup fast ion loss detector array have shown that the internal kink growth phase preceding sawtooth crashes produces substantial fast ion losses. This report will numerically investigate the dominant energetic particle transport mechanism with a detailed examination of the fast ion phase-space dependencies, resonances, orbit topology changes, induced losses, and redistribution associated with the long-lived, resonant, kink mode and non-resonant sawtooth crash. The ORBIT-kick model forms the basis of the transport studies with realistic fast ion distributions produced from TRANSP. A recently created reduced model for sawtooth induced transport is used while the saturated kink modes are modeled with ideal magnetohydrodynamic codes. The simulations were further validated against experiment with a newly developed synthetic Faraday cup fast ion loss detector in addition to scintillator probe and neutron measurements. We implemented a didactic experiment to study the angular correlation between the two gamma rays emitted in typical 60Co radioactive decays. We used two NaI(Tl) scintillators, already available in our laboratory, and a low-activity 60Co source. The detectors were mounted on two rails, with the source at their center. The first rail was fixed, while the second could be rotated around the source. We performed several measurements by changing the angle between the two scintillators in the range from 90° to 180°. Dedicated background runs were also performed, removing the source from the experimental setup. We found that the signal rate increases with the angular separation between the two scintillators, with small discrepancies from the theoretical expectations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective. Monolithic scintillator crystals coupled to silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays are promising detectors for PET applications, offering spatial resolution around 1 mm and depth-of-interaction information. However, their timing resolution has always been inferior to that of pixellated crystals, while the best results on spatial resolution have been obtained with algorithms that cannot operate in real-time in a PET detector. In this study, we explore the capabilities of monolithic crystals with respect to spatial and timing resolution, presenting new algorithms that overcome the mentioned problems. Approach. Our algorithms were tested first using a simulation framework, then on experimentally acquired data. We tested an event timestamping algorithm based on neural networks which was then integrated into a second neural network for simultaneous estimation of the event position and timestamp. Both algorithms are implemented in a low-cost field-programmable gate array that can be integrated in the detector and can process more than 1 million events per second in real-time. Results. Testing the neural network for the simultaneous estimation of the event position and timestamp on experimental data we obtain 0.78 2D FWHM on the (x, y) plane, 1.2 depth-of-interaction FWHM and 156 coincidence time resolution on a 25 mm Ă— 25 mm Ă— 8 mm Ă— LYSO monolith read-out by 64 3 mm Ă— 3 mm Hamamatsu SiPMs. Significance. Our results show that monolithic crystals combined with artificial intelligence can rival pixellated crystals performance for time-of-flight PET applications, while having better spatial resolution and DOI resolution. Thanks to the use of very light neural networks, event characterization can be done on-line directly in the detector, solving the issues of scalability and computational complexity that up to now were preventing the use of monolithic crystals in clinical PET scanners. The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station consists of a high-energy cosmic-ray CALorimeter (CAL) and a lower-energy CALET Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (CGBM). CAL is sensitive to electrons up to 20 TeV, cosmic-ray nuclei from Z = 1 through Z ∼ 40, and gamma rays over the range 1 GeVâ€"10 TeV. CGBM observes gamma rays from 7 keV to 20 MeV. The combined CAL-CGBM instrument has conducted a search for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) since 2015 October. We report here on the results of a search for X-ray/gamma-ray counterparts to gravitational-wave events reported during the LIGO/Virgo observing run O3. No events have been detected that pass all acceptance criteria. We describe the components, performance, and triggering algorithms of the CGBMâ€"the two Hard X-ray Monitors consisting of LaBr3(Ce) scintillators sensitive to 7 keVâ€"1 MeV gamma rays and a Soft Gamma-ray Monitor BGO scintillator sensitive to 40 keVâ€"20 MeVâ€"and the high-energy CAL consisting of a charge detection module, imaging calorimeter, and the fully active total absorption calorimeter. We model long-term variations in the scintillation of binary pulsar PSR J1603âˆ'7202, observed by the 64 m Parkes radio telescope (Murriyang) between 2004 and 2016. We find that the time variation in the scintillation arc curvature is well-modeled by scattering from an anisotropic thin screen of plasma between the Earth and the pulsar. Using our scintillation model, we measure the inclination angle and longitude of ascending node of the orbit, yielding a significant improvement over the constraints from pulsar timing. From our measurement of the inclination angle, we place a lower bound on the mass of J1603âˆ'7202's companion of ≳0.5 M ⊙ assuming a pulsar mass of ≳1.2 M ⊙. We find that the scintillation arcs are most pronounced when the electron column density along the line of sight is increased, and that arcs are present during a known extreme scattering event. We measure the distance to the interstellar plasma and its velocity, and we discuss some structures seen in individual scintillation arcs within the context of our model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, single crystalline boron nanowires (BNWs) have been synthesized by chemical vapor transport using boron element as boron source, iodine as transport agent, and Au as catalyst. The results demonstrate that BNWs can be all formed at 600 °Câ€"950 °C for 2 h, and possess rhombohedral crystal structure (β -boron). The NWs have diameters from several to hundreds of nanometers, and lengths from several to hundreds of microns. A single nanowire has been fabricated to field effect transistor (FET) which shows excellent solar blind photosensitivity and selectivity. The photo/dark current ratio and photoresponsitity is 1.14 and 97.6 mA Wâˆ'1 at a bias of 5 V under light illumination of 254 nm with 0.42 mW cmâˆ'2, respectively, and both the rising and decay time of the onâ€"off currents are 4.6 s and 10.3 s, respectively. When the FET is used as a personal breath sensor, the ratio of exsufflating and inhaling currents is 2.7, rising and decay time of the breath currents are 0.4 s and 2.2 s, respectively. Objective. Despite the demonstrated benefits of hyperspectral formalism for stem effect corrections in the context of fiber dose measurements, this approach has not been yet translated into volumetric measurements where cameras are typically used for their distinguishing spatial resolution. This work investigates demosaicing algorithms for polychromatic cameras based spectral imaging. Approach. The scintillation and Cherenkov signals produced in a radioluminescent phantom are imaged by a polychromatic camera and isolated using the spectral formalism. To do so, five demosaicing algorithms are investigated from calibration to measurements: a clustering method and four interpolation algorithms. The resulting accuracy of scintillation and Cherenkov images is evaluated with measurements of the differences (mean ± standard deviation) between the obtained and expected signals from profiles drawn across a scintillation spot. Signal-to-noise ratio and signal-to-background ratio are further measured and compared in the resulting scintillation images. Finally, the resulting differences on the scintillation signal from a 0.2 × 0.2 cm2 region-of-interest (ROI) were reported. Main results. Clustering, OpenCV, bilinear, Malvar and Menon demosaicing algorithms respectively yielded differences of 3 ± 5%, 1 ± 3%, 1 ± 3%, 1 ± 2% and 2 ± 4% in the resulting scintillation images. For the Cherenkov images, all algorithms provided differences below 1%. All methods enabled measurements over the detectability (SBR > 2) and sensitivity (SNR > 5) thresholds with the bilinear algorithm providing the best SNR value. Clustering, OpenCV, bilinear, Malvar and Menon demosaicing algorithms respectively provided differences on the ROI analysis of 7 ± 5%, 3 ± 2%, 3 ± 2%, 4 ± 2%, 7 ± 3%. Significance. Radioluminescent signals can accurately be isolated using a single polychromatic camera. Moreover, demosaicing using a bilinear kernel provided the best results and enabled Cherenkov signal subtraction while preserving the full spatial resolution of the camera. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In contrast to clinical radiation therapy (RT) that ubiquitously uses PET/CT image to accurately guide RT, all current commercial animal irradiators can only provide CT image-guided preclinical RT that severely limits their capability for preclinical and compatibility for translational radiation oncology research. To address this problem, we have developed a compact and lightweight PET with uniform, high spatial resolution that is suited to be installed inside an existing animal irradiator for potential onboard PET/CT image-guided preclinical RT research. Approach: The design focused on the balance of achieving sufficient imaging performance for practical preclinical RT guidance with constrained size and weight. The detector head consists of a ring of 12 detector panels in a dodecagon configuration and 12 front-end electronics boards that are closely attached to the detector panels. The overall size and weight of the detector head are 33.0 cm diameter, 11.0 cm axial length and ∼6.5 kg weight that can be installed inside an existing irradiator. Each detector panel has a 30 × 30 array of 1 × 1 × 20 mm3 LYSO scintillators with depth-of-interaction (DOI) measurement. The front-end electronics boards process and convert detected signals to digital signals and transfer them to system electronics and data acquisition located outside the irradiator through low-voltage-differential-signaling cables. Main results: The typical energy, DOI and coincidence timing resolutions are around 22.1%, 3.1 mm, and 1.92 ns. The imaging field-of-view (FOV) is 8.0 cm diameter and 3.5 cm axial length. The performance evaluations show a 1.8% sensitivity at the center FOV, uniform ∼1.1 mm resolution within 6 cm diameter FOV, and all rods of 1.0 mm diameter can be clearly resolved from the image of an ultra-micro hot-rods phantom. Significance: Overall, this compact and lightweight PET has demonstrated its designed capability and performance sufficient for providing onboard functional/biological/molecular image to guide the preclinical RT research. Objective: Dual-ended readout depth-encoding detectors based on bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation crystal arrays are good candidates for high-sensitivity small animal positron emission tomography used for very-low-dose imaging. In this paper, the performance of three dual-ended readout detectors based on 15 × 15 BGO arrays with three different reflector arrangements and 8 × 8 silicon photomultiplier arrays were evaluated and compared. Approach: The three BGO arrays, denoted wo-ILG (without internal light guide), wp-ILG (with partial internal light guide), and wf-ILG (with full internal light guide), share a pitch size of 1.6 mm and thickness of 20 mm. Toray E60 with a thickness of 50 μ m was used as inter-crystal reflector. All reflector lengths in the wo-ILG and wf-ILG BGO arrays were 20 and 18 mm, respectively; the reflectors in the wp-ILG BGO array were 18 mm at the central region of the array and 20 mm at the edge. By using 18 mm reflectors, part of the crystals in the wp-ILG and wf-ILG BGO arrays worked as internal light guides. Main results: The results showed that the detector based on the wo-ILG BGO array provided the best flood histogram. The energy, timing and DOI resolutions of the three detectors were similar. The energy resolutions full width at half maximum (FWHM value) based on the wo-ILG, wp-ILG and wf-ILG BGO arrays were 27.2 ± 3.9%, 28.7 ± 4.6%, and 29.5 ± 4.7%, respectively. The timing resolutions (FWHM value) were 4.7 ± 0.5 ns, 4.9 ± 0.5 ns, and 5.0 ± 0.6 ns, respectively. The DOI resolution (FWHM value) were 3.0 ± 0.2 mm, 2.9 ± 0.2 mm, and 3.0 ± 0.2 mm, respectively. Non-vanishing electromagnetic properties of neutrinos have been predicted by many theories beyond the Standard Model, and an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment can have profound implications for fundamental physics. The XENON1T experiment recently detected an excess of electron recoil events in the 1â€"7 keV energy range, which can be compatible with solar neutrino magnetic moment interaction at a most probable value of μν = 2.1 Ă— 10âˆ'11 ÎĽ B. However, tritium backgrounds or solar axion interaction in this energy window are equally plausible causes. Upcoming multi-tonne noble liquid detectors will test these scenarios more in depth, but will continue to face similar ambiguity. We report a unique capability of future large liquid scintillator detectors to help resolve the potential neutrino magnetic moment scenario. With O (100) ktonâ‹...year exposure of liquid scintillator to solar neutrinos, a sensitivity of μν < 10âˆ'11 ÎĽ B can be reached at an energy threshold greater than 40 keV, where no tritium or solar axion events but only neutrino magnetic moment signal is still present. A multilayer depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography DOI PET) detector with an independent readout structure has a potential advantage as a time-of-flight (TOF) PET detector. The thin scintillator block of each detector layer can afford an improved coincidence time resolution (CTR) of ∼100 ps because the photon transfer time spread within the scintillator inherently decreases. To evaluate the potential TOF capabilities of a multilayer DOI-PET detector, which consists of thin layers of a cerium-doped lutetium–yttrium oxyorthosilicate (LYSO:Ce) scintillator coupled to a multi-pixel photon counter (MPPC) array, we examined the detector's CTR performance via Monte Carlo simulations. We used several types of scintillator structures: a monolithic plate, laser-processing array with 3.2 mm pitch, fine laser-processing array with 1.6 mm pitch, and pixelated array with 3.2 mm pitch, with 2, 4, 6, and 8 mm thickness values of a 25.6 mm 25.6 mm scintillator cross-section. The MPPC array was composed of 3.0 mm 3.0 mm photosensitive segments arranged in an 8 × 8 array. Here, we note that the CTR performance also significantly depends on the timing detection method, which generates a timing trigger signal for coincidence detection. Thus, we evaluated the CTRs for each scintillator structure by adopting four timing detection methods: using the total sum signal of 64 MPPC chips (T sum), the maximum signal in the 64 MPPC chips (Max), the sum signal of a partial number of MPPC chips located at and in the vicinity of the γ-ray interaction position (P sum), and the average of the timestamps generated at several MPPC chips (Ave). When using the T sum for timing detection, the CTR full width at half-maximum values were ∼100 ps regardless of the scintillator structure. However, when using the Max signal approach, the CTRs of the monolithic plates, laser-processing arrays, and fine-pitch laser-processing arrays were drastically degraded with increasing thickness. On the other hand, the CTRs of the pixelated arrays exhibited almost no degradation. To improve the CTRs of the monolithic plate and the (fine-pitch) laser-processing array that exhibit a large light spread in the scintillator block, we applied the P sum and Ave methods. The resulting CTRs significantly improved upon using P sum; however, in the Ave approach the improvement effect disappeared when the thickness was 6 mm in case of our simulation. Sensitivity and spatial resolution of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners can be improved by using thicker scintillation crystals with depth-of-interaction (DOI) encoding. Subsurface laser engraving (SSLE) can be used to segment crystals of a scintillation detector in order to fabricate a DOI detector. We previously applied SSLE to crystal bars of 3 × 3 × 20 mm3 and 1.5 × 1.5 × 20 mm3 and developed two dual-ended detectors with DOI segments of 3 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively. To further improve the DOI resolution, our SSLE detector design can be used with smaller pitch crystal bars, making them excellent detector candidates for small animal PET scanners with submillimetre resolution. In the present study, three small crystal bars of 1 × 1 × 20 mm3, 2 × 1 × 20 mm3, and 2 × 1 × 40 mm3 were laser engraved to 12, 20 and 40 segments, respectively, by applying SSLE in their height directions. The segmented crystal bars were characterised in three prototype detector arrangements. First, the 1 × 1 × 20 mm3 crystal bars were characterised in an 8 × 8 crystal array designed for DOI encoding along crystal height in a conventional small animal PET design. Second, a 4 × 8 crystal array of 2 × 1 × 20 mm3 crystal bars was characterised for using the DOI information for crystal interaction positioning along the axial axis of a small animal PET scanner. Finally, the third part of the study was performed on a single 2 × 1 × 40 mm3 crystal bar with 40 segments to investigate the feasibility of DOI estimation in longer crystals for application in a system with extended axial length. We evaluated the capability of segment identification and energy resolution of theses detectors. The 3D position maps of the detectors were obtained using the Anger-type calculation and the crystal identification performance was evaluated for each detector. Clear segment separation was obtained for the crystal arrays with 12 (segment pitch of 1.67 mm) and 20 (segment pitch of 1 mm) segments. Mean energy resolutions of 8.8% ± 0.4% and 9.6% ± 0.8% at 511 keV were obtained for the segments in the central regions of the 8 × 8 array with 12 segments and the 4 × 8 array with 20 segments, respectively. Clear segment identification was found to be difficult for the detector with 40 segments, especially for the segments at the middle of the crystal. Energy and interaction positioning characterisation results suggest that both prototype detectors with 12 and 20 segments are well suited for small animal PET scanners with high spatial resolution. Plastic scintillation detectors are increasingly used to measure dose distributions in the context of radiotherapy treatments. Their water-equivalence, real-time response and high spatial resolution distinguish them from traditional detectors, especially in complex irradiation geometries. Their range of applications could be further extended by embedding scintillators in a deformable matrix mimicking anatomical changes. In this work, we characterized signal variations arising from the translation and rotation of scintillating fibers with respect to a camera. Corrections are proposed using stereo vision techniques and two sCMOS complementing a CCD camera. The study was extended to the case of a prototype real-time deformable dosimeter comprising an array of 19 scintillating fibers. The signal to angle relationship follows a gaussian distribution (FWHM = 52°) whereas the intensity variation from radial displacement follows the inverse square law. Tracking the position and angle of the fibers enabled the correction of these spatial dependencies. The detecting system provides an accuracy and precision of respectively 0.08 mm and 0.3 mm on the position detection. This resulted in an uncertainty of 2° on the angle measurement. Displacing the dosimeter by ±3 cm in depth resulted in relative intensities of 100 ± 10% (mean ± standard deviation) to the reference position. Applying corrections reduced the variations thus resulting in relative intensities of 100 ± 1%. Similarly, for lateral displacements of ±3 cm, intensities went from 98 ± 3% to 100 ± 1% after the correction. Therefore, accurate correction of the signal collected by a camera imaging the output of scintillating elements in a 3D volume is possible. The purpose of the presented research is estimation of the performance characteristics of the economic total-body Jagiellonian-PET system (TB-J-PET) constructed from plastic scintillators. The characteristics are estimated according to the NEMA NU-2-2018 standards utilizing the GATE package. The simulated detector consists of 24 modules, each built out of 32 plastic scintillator strips (each with cross section of 6 mm times 30 mm and length of 140 or 200 cm) arranged in two layers in regular 24-sided polygon circumscribing a circle with the diameter of 78.6 cm. For the TB-J-PET with an axial field-of-view (AFOV) of 200 cm, a spatial resolutions (SRs) of 3.7 mm (transversal) and 4.9 mm (axial) are achieved. The noise equivalent count rate (NECR) peak of 630 kcps is expected at 30 kBq cc−1. Activity concentration and the sensitivity at the center amounts to 38 cps kBq−1. The scatter fraction (SF) is estimated to 36.2 %. The values of SF and SR are comparable to those obtained for the state-of-the-art clinical PET scanners and the first total-body tomographs: uExplorer and PennPET. With respect to the standard PET systems with AFOV in the range from 16 to 26 cm, the TB-J-PET is characterized by an increase in NECR approximately by factor of 4 and by the increase of the whole-body sensitivity by factor of 12.6 to 38. The time-of-flight resolution for the TB-J-PET is expected to be at the level of CRT = 240 ps full width at half maximum. For the TB-J-PET with an AFOV of 140 cm, an image quality of the reconstructed images of a NEMA IEC phantom was presented with a contrast recovery coefficient and a background variability parameters. The increase of the whole-body sensitivity and NECR estimated for the TB-J-PET with respect to current commercial PET systems makes the TB-J-PET a promising cost-effective solution for the broad clinical applications of total-body PET scanners. TB-J-PET may constitute an economic alternative for the crystal TB-PET scanners, since plastic scintillators are much cheaper than BGO or LYSO crystals and axial arrangement of the strips significantly reduces the costs of readout electronics and SiPMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We extract interstellar scintillation parameters for pulsars observed by the NANOGrav radio pulsar timing program. Dynamic spectra for the observing epochs of each pulsar were used to obtain estimates of scintillation timescales, scintillation bandwidths, and the corresponding scattering delays using a stretching algorithm to account for frequency-dependent scaling. We were able to measure scintillation bandwidths for 28 pulsars at 1500 MHz and 15 pulsars at 820 MHz. We examine scaling behavior for 17 pulsars and find power-law indices ranging from −0.7 to −3.6, though these may be biased shallow due to insufficient frequency resolution at lower frequencies. We were also able to measure scintillation timescales for six pulsars at 1500 MHz and seven pulsars at 820 MHz. There is fair agreement between our scattering delay measurements and electron-density model predictions for most pulsars. We derive interstellar scattering-based transverse velocities assuming isotropic scattering and a scattering screen halfway between the pulsar and Earth. We also estimate the location of the scattering screens assuming proper motion and interstellar scattering-derived transverse velocities are equal. We find no correlations between variations in scattering delay and either variations in dispersion measure or flux density. For most pulsars for which scattering delays are measurable, we find that time-of-arrival uncertainties for a given epoch are larger than our scattering delay measurements, indicating that variable scattering delays are currently subdominant in our overall noise budget but are important for achieving precisions of tens of nanoseconds or less. The system spatial resolution of whole-body positron emission tomography (PET) is limited to around 2 mm due to positron physics and the large diameter of the bore. To stay below this 'physics'-limit a scintillation detector with an intrinsic spatial resolution of around 1.3 mm is needed. Currently used detector technology consists of arrays of 2.6–5 mm segmented scintillator pixels which are the dominant factor contributing to the system resolution. Pixelated detectors using smaller pixels exist but face major drawbacks in sensitivity, timing, energy resolution and cost. Monolithic continuous detectors, where the spatial resolution is determined by the shape of the light distribution on the photodetector array, are a promising alternative. Without having the drawbacks of pixelated detectors, monolithic ones can also provide depth-of-interaction (DOI) information. In this work we present a monolithic detector design aiming to serve high-resolution clinical PET systems while maintaining high sensitivity. A 50 × 50 × 16 mm3 Lutetium–Yttrium oxyorthosilicate scintillation crystal with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) backside readout is calibrated in singles mode by a collimated beam obtaining a reference dataset for the event positioning. A mean nearest neighbour (MNN) algorithm and an artificial neural network for positioning are compared. The targeted intrinsic detector resolution of 1.3 mm needed to reach a 2 mm resolution on system level was accomplished with both algorithms. The neural network achieved a mean spatial resolution of 1.14 mm FWHM for the whole detector and 1.02 mm in the centre (30 × 30 mm2). The MNN algorithm performed slightly worse with 1.17 mm for the whole detector and 1.13 mm in the centre. The purpose of this study is to compare the image quality of an integrating proton radiography (PR) system, composed of a monolithic scintillator and two digital cameras, using integral lateral-dose and integral depth-dose image reconstruction techniques. Monte Carlo simulations were used to obtain the energy deposition in a 3D monolithic scintillator detector (30 × 30 × 30 cm3 poly vinyl toluene organic scintillator) to create radiographs of various phantoms—a slanted aluminum cube for spatial resolution analysis and a Las Vegas phantom for contrast analysis. The light emission of the scintillator was corrected using Birks scintillation model. We compared two integrating PR methods and the expected results from an idealized proton tracking radiography system. Four different image reconstruction methods were utilized in this study: integral scintillation light projected from the beams-eye view, depth-dose based reconstruction methods both with and without optimization, and single particle tracking PR was used for reference data. Results showed that heterogeneity artifact due to medium-interface mismatch was identified from the Las Vegas phantom simulated in air. Spatial resolution was found to be highest for single-event reconstruction. Contrast levels, ranked from best to worst, were found to correspond to particle tracking, optimized depth-dose, depth-dose, and projection-based image reconstructions. The image quality of a monolithic scintillator integrating PR system was sufficient to warrant further exploration. In this work, we present the development and application of a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based algorithm to precisely determine the interaction position of γ-quanta in large monolithic scintillators. Those are used as an absorber component of a Compton camera (CC) system under development for ion beam range verification via prompt-gamma imaging. We examined two scintillation crystals: LaBr3:Ce and CeBr3. Each crystal had dimensions of 50.8 mm × 50.8 mm × 30 mm and was coupled to a 64-fold segmented multi-anode photomultiplier tube (PMT) with an 8 × 8 pixel arrangement. We determined the spatial resolution for three photon energies of 662, 1.17 and 1.33 MeV obtained from 2D detector scans with tightly collimated 137Cs and 60Co photon sources. With the new algorithm we achieved a spatial resolution for the CeBr3 crystal below 1.11(8) mm and below 0.98(7) mm for the LaBr3:Ce detector for all investigated energies between 662 keV and 1.33 MeV. We thereby improved the performance by more than a factor of 2.5 compared to the previously used categorical average pattern algorithm, which is a variation of the well-established k-nearest neighbor algorithm. The trained CNN has a low memory footprint and enables the reconstruction of up to 104 events per second with only one GPU. Those improvements are crucial on the way to future clinical in vivo applicability of the CC for ion beam range verification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The translucent GGAG:Ce/glass composites are prepared successfully by ball-milling, tableting, and pressureless sintering. The thickness of composites is about 400 μm. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), density of composite materials are measured and discussed systematically. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) elemental mapping are employed to analyze the particle size, the shape of powders, and the distribution of GGAG:Ce particles in the glass matrix, respectively. The decay time, ultraviolet, (UV), x-ray excitation luminescence spectra, and temperature spectra are studied. The results show that the composite materials have high light output, good thermostability, and short decay time. The method adopted in this work is an effective method to reduce the preparation time and cost of the sample. The ultralow afterglow indicates that the composite materials have an opportunity to be used for x-ray detection and imaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of a miniaturized inorganic scintillator detector is demonstrated in the analysis of the small static photon fields used in external radiation therapy. Such a detector is constituted by a 0.25 mm diameter and 0.48 mm long inorganic scintillating cell (1.6 × 10−5 cm3 detection volume) efficiently coupled to a narrow 125 μm diameter silica optical fiber using a tiny photonic interface (an optical antenna). The response of our miniaturized scintillator detector (MSD) under 6 MV bremsstrahlung beam of various sizes (from 1 × 1 cm2 to 4 × 4 cm2) is compared to that of two high resolution reference probes, namely, a micro-diamond detector and a dedicated silicon diode. The spurious Cerenkov signal transmitted through our bare detector is rejected with a basic spectral filtering. The MSD shows a linear response regarding the dose, a repeatability within 0.1% and a radial directional dependence of 0.36% (standard deviations). Beam profiling at 5 cm depth with the MSD and the micro-diamond detector shows a mismatch in the measurement of the full widths at 80% and 50% of the maximum which does not exceed 0.25 mm. The same difference range is found between the micro-diamond detector and a silicon diode. The deviation of the percentage depth dose between the MSD and micro-diamond detector remains below 2.3% within the first fifteen centimeters of the decay region for field sizes of 1 × 1 cm2, 2 × 2 cm2 and 3 × 3 cm2 (0.76% between the silicon diode and the micro-diamond in the same field range). The 2D dose mapping of a 0.6 × 0.6 cm2 photon field evidences the strong 3D character of the radiation-matter interaction in small photon field regime. From a beam-probe convolution theory, we predict that our probe overestimates the beam width by 0.06%, making our detector a right compromise between high resolution, compactness, flexibility and ease of use. The MSD overcomes problem of volume averaging, stem effects, and despite its water non-equivalence it is expected to minimize electron fluence perturbation due to its extreme compactness. Such a detector thus has the potential to become a valuable dose verification tool in small field radiation therapy, and by extension in Brachytherapy, FLASH-radiotherapy and microbeam radiation therapy. Inorganic scintillators are widely used for fast timing applications in high-energy physics (HEP) experiments, time-of-flight positron emission tomography and time tagging of soft and hard x-ray photons at advanced light sources. As the best coincidence time resolution (CTR) achievable is proportional to the square root of the scintillation decay time it is worth studying fast cross-luminescence, for example in BaF2 which has an intrinsic yield of about 1400 photons/MeV. However, emission bands in BaF2 are located in the deep-UV at 195 nm and 220 nm, which sets severe constraints on photodetector selection. Recent developments in dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches have led to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) with photon detection efficiencies of 20%–25% at wavelengths of 200 nm. We tested state-of-the-art devices from Fondazione Bruno Kessler and measured a best CTR of 51 ± 5 ps full width at half maximum when coupling 2 mm × 2 mm × 3 mm BaF2 crystals excited by 511 keV electron–positron annihilation gammas. Using these vacuum ultraviolet SiPMs we recorded the scintillation kinetics of samples from Epic Crystal under 511 keV excitation, confirming a fast decay time of 855 ps with 12.2% relative light yield and 805 ns with 84.0% abundance, together with a smaller rise time of 4 ps beyond the resolution of our setup. The total intrinsic light yield was determined to be 8500 photons/MeV. We also revealed a faster component with 136 ps decay time and 3.7% light yield contribution, which is extremely interesting for the fastest timing applications. Timing characteristics and CTR results on BaF2 samples from different producers and with different dopants (yttrium, cadmium and lanthanum) are given, and clearly show that the the slow 800 ns emission can be effectively suppressed. Such results ultimately pave the way for high-rate ultrafast timing applications in medical diagnosis, range monitoring in proton or heavy ion therapy and HEP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lead halide quantum dots (QDs) have unique optical properties such as a tunable wavelength, narrow band, and high quantum efficiency, and have been used in optoelectronics such as light-emitting diode device, and photodetector. Recently, solution-processed perovskite has also attracted great attention for high sensitivity x-ray detector. Here, we have investigated the scintillation performances of Pb halide perovskite QDs solution. Both CH3NH3PbBr3 and CsPbBr3 QDs liquid scintillator exhibits the scintillation performances such as the linear relationship with the irradiation dose rate in a wide range, high radiation hardness, thermal stability, and fast counting speed. The scintillation performances of these liquid perovskite QDs solution provide a promising potential application for indirect radiation applications including fast gamma-ray counter and wide range dosimeter. The imaging performance of clinical positron emission tomography (PET) systems has evolved impressively during the last ∼15 years. A main driver of these improvements has been the introduction of time-of-flight (TOF) detectors with high spatial resolution and detection efficiency, initially based on photomultiplier tubes, later silicon photomultipliers. This review aims to offer insight into the challenges encountered, solutions developed, and lessons learned during this period. Detectors based on fast, bright, inorganic scintillators form the scope of this work, as these are used in essentially all clinical TOF-PET systems today. The improvement of the coincidence resolving time (CRT) requires the optimization of the entire detection chain and a sound understanding of the physics involved facilitates this effort greatly. Therefore, the theory of scintillation detector timing is reviewed first. Once the fundamentals have been set forth, the principal detector components are discussed: the scintillator and the photosensor. The parameters that influence the CRT are examined and the history, state-of-the-art, and ongoing developments are reviewed. Finally, the interplay between these components and the optimization of the overall detector design are considered. Based on the knowledge gained to date, it appears feasible to improve the CRT from the values of 200–400 ps achieved by current state-of-the-art TOF-PET systems to about 100 ps or less, even though this may require the implementation of advanced methods such as time resolution recovery. At the same time, it appears unlikely that a system-level CRT in the order of ∼10 ps can be reached with conventional scintillation detectors. Such a CRT could eliminate the need for conventional tomographic image reconstruction and a search for new approaches to timestamp annihilation photons with ultra-high precision is therefore warranted. While the focus of this review is on timing performance, it attempts to approach the topic from a clinically driven perspective, i.e. bearing in mind that the ultimate goal is to optimize the value of PET in research and (personalized) medicine. Integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) into a simultaneous device calls for adaptations of the radio frequency (RF) shielding concept. Conventional PET module housings fully encase the entire PET detector to reduce mutual interference. Excluding passive components, i.e. scintillators, from the housings, offers integration advantages, e.g. by reducing the overall housing volume or utilizing bigger scintillators. However, locating the scintillator outside of the RF shielding requires an optically transparent RF shielding interface between the scintillators and the photodetector to close the aperture. Therefore, a careful evaluation and selection of RF materials is essential to ensure an excellent PET/MRI system performance. To this end, we examined 10 materials (coated glasses, coated foils, meshes). The shielding effectiveness (SE) was evaluated at 100 and 300 MHz. PET performance was tested for single event registration and coincident events by integrating the material into the PET detector stack between the digital silicon photomultiplier photodetector array and one-to-one coupled scintillator. We determined photon attenuation (PA), energy resolution (dE/E), and coincidence resolving time (CRT) and compared to reference measurements for each material group. MRI compatibility was assessed by analyzing the material influence on the main magnetic field (B0) homogeneity. The coated glasses and foils exhibited SEs of up to 25 dB at 300 MHz. Both had a PA < 23% with dE/E and CRT comparable to the reference measurements, and no measurable impact on the B0 field was registered. The meshes exhibited higher SEs up to 56 dB, but also a PA > 58% with a higher impact on dE/E and CRT. Only one mesh affected B0 homogeneity. Overall, we recommend the coated foil HS 9400 for integration concepts as it exhibited a good performance with SE = 25 dB, PA = 22%, resulting in a PET performance of dE/E = 12% and CRT = 274 ps. The challenge to reach 10 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) in time-of-flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) is triggering major efforts worldwide, but timing improvements of scintillation detectors will remain elusive without depth-of-interaction (DOI) correction in long crystals. Nonetheless, this momentum opportunely brings up the prospect of a fully time-based DOI estimation since fast timing signals intrinsically carry DOI information, even with a traditional single-ended readout. Consequently, extracting features of the detected signal time distribution could uncover the spatial origin of the interaction and in return, provide enhancement on the timing precision of detectors. We demonstrate the validity of a time-based DOI estimation concept in two steps. First, experimental measurements were carried out with current LSO:Ce:Ca crystals coupled to FBK NUV-HD SiPMs read out by fast high-frequency electronics to provide new evidence of a distinct DOI effect on CTR not observable before with slower electronics. Using this detector, a DOI discrimination using a double-threshold scheme on the analog timing signal together with the signal intensity information was also developed without any complex readout or detector modification. As a second step, we explored by simulation the anticipated performance requirements of future detectors to efficiently estimate the DOI and we proposed four estimators that exploit either more generic or more precise features of th dependent timestamp distribution. A simple estimator using the time difference between two timestamps provided enhanced CTR. Additional improvements were achieved with estimators using multiple timestamps (e.g. kernel density estimation and neural network) converging to the Cramér–Rao lower bound developed in this work for a time-based DOI estimation. This two-step study provides insights on current and future possibilities in exploiting the timing signal features for DOI estimation aiming at ultra-fast CTR while maintaining detection efficiency for TOF PET. An undergraduate-level student experiment has been designed and implemented to measure the forward–backward asymmetry of the decay of the cosmic-ray muons, offering a pedagogical view to the parity violation in weak interactions. The detector system consists of six plastic scintillators installed vertically in row. The backward–forward asymmetry of the decay e− and e+ with respect to the muon motion direction is correlated with the incident depth of the muon stopped in the scintillator. MC simulations have been carried out in order to better interpret the data and optimize the data analysis. The forward–backward asymmetry of 0.051 ± 0.027 is deduced for the decay of cosmic-ray muons in the energy range being studied. The results are consistent with the picture of parity violation in weak interactions. The experiment can be constructed by the senior undergraduate students under the guidance of the course teacher. This study introduces the HYPERSCINT research platform (HYPERSCINT-RP100, Medscint Inc., Quebec, Canada), the first commercially available scintillation dosimetry platform capable of multi-point dosimetry through the hyperspectral approach. Optic and dosimetric performances of the system were investigated through comparison with another commercially available solution, the Ocean Optics QE65Pro spectrometer. The optical characterization was accomplished by measuring the linearity of the signal as a function of integration time, photon detection efficiency and spectral resolution for both systems under the same conditions. Dosimetric performances were then evaluated with a 3-point plastic scintillator detector (mPSD) in terms of signal to noise ratio (SNR) and signal to background ratio (SBR) associated with each scintillator. The latter were subsequently compared with those found in the literature for the Exradin W1, a single-point plastic scintillator detector. Finally, various beam measurements were realized with the HYPERSCINT platform to evaluate its ability to perform clinical photon beam dosimetry. Both systems were found to be comparable in terms of linearity of the signal as a function of the intensity. Although the QE65Pro possesses a higher spectral resolution, the detection efficiency of the HYPERSCINT is up to 1000 time greater. Dosimetric measurements shows that the latter also offers a better SNR and SBR, surpassing even the SNR of the Exradin W1 single-point PSD. While doses ranging from 1 to 600 cGy were accurately measured within 2.1% of the predicted dose using the HYPERSCINT platform coupled to the mPSD, the Ocean optics spectrometer shows discrepancies up to 86% under 50cGy. Similarly, depth dose, full width at half maximum region of the beam profile and output factors were all accurately measured within 2.3% of the predicted dose using the HYPERSCINT platform and exhibit an average difference of 0.5%, 1.6% and 0.6%, respectively. Multi-layer imaging (MLI) devices improve the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) while maintaining the spatial resolution of conventional mega-voltage (MV) x-ray detectors for applications in radiotherapy. To date, only MLIs with identical detector layers have been explored. However, it may be possible to instead use different scintillation materials in each layer to improve the final image quality. To this end, we developed and validated a method for optimally combining the individual images from each layer of MLI devices that are built with heterogeneous layers. Two configurations were modeled within the GATE Monte Carlo package by stacking different layers of a terbium doped gadolinium oxysulfide Gd2O2S:Tb (GOS) phosphor and a LKH-5 glass scintillator. Detector response was characterized in terms of the modulation transfer function (MTF), normalized noise power spectrum (NNPS) and DQE. Spatial frequency-dependent weighting factors were then analytically derived for each layer such that the total DQE of the summed combination image would be maximized across all spatial modes. The final image is obtained as the weighted sum of the sub-images from each layer. Optimal weighting factors that maximize the DQE were found to be the quotient of MTF and NNPS of each layer in the heterogeneous MLI detector. Results validated the improvement of the DQE across the entire frequency domain. For the LKH-5 slab configuration, DQE(0) increases between 2%–3% (absolute), while the corresponding improvement for the LKH-5 pixelated configuration was 7%. The performance of the weighting method was quantitatively evaluated with respect to spatial resolution, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of simulated planar images of phantoms at 2.5 and 6 MV. The line pair phantom acquisition exhibited a twofold increase in CNR and SNR, however MTF was degraded at spatial frequencies greater than 0.2 lp mm−1. For the Las Vegas phantom, the weighting improved the CNR by around 30% depending on the contrast region while the SNR values are higher by a factor of 2.5. These results indicate that the imaging performance of MLI systems can be enhanced using the proposed frequency-dependent weighting scheme. We have developed a scalable detector readout design for a 100 ps coincidence time resolution (CTR) time of flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) detector technology. The basic scintillation detectors studied in this paper are based on 2 × 4 arrays of 3 × 3 × 10 mm3 'fast-LGSO:Ce' scintillation crystals side-coupled to 6 × 4 arrays of 3 × 3 mm2 silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). We employed a novel mixed-signal front-end electronic configuration and a low timing jitter Field Programming Gate Array-based time to digital converter for data acquisition. Using a 22Na point source, >10 000 coincidence events were experimentally acquired for several SiPM bias voltages, leading edge time-pickoff thresholds, and timing channels. CTR of 102.03 ± 1.9 ps full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) was achieved using single 3 × 3 × 10 mm3 'fast-LGSO' crystal elements, wrapped in Teflon tape and side coupled to a linear array of 3 SiPMs. In addition, the measured average CTR was 113.4 ± 0.7 ps for the side-coupled 2 × 4 crystal array. The purpose of this article is to explore the cause of the over-response phenomenon of fiber x-ray sensor. The sensor is based on a length of PMMA fiber, whose end is filled with the scintillation material Gd2O2S:Tb. The Monte Carlo simulation software GEANT4 uses the phase space file provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), by irradiating the fiber x-ray sensor in the water phantom, counting the fluorescence signal of the optical fiber x-ray sensor after propagation through the fiber. In addition, the number of Cerenkov photons propagating through the fiber is also counted. Comparing this article with previous research, we believe that one of the reasons for the over-response of the fiber x-ray sensor is the non-linear response of the deposition energy of the scintillator to the fluorescence. By establishing a region of interest and counting the x-rays in this region, the simulation results show that the counted number of x-rays that may affect the fiber x-ray sensor is the biggest in the area of interest at a water depth of 5 cm. This result is close to the maximum dose point of the experimental and simulated percentage depth dose (PDD) curve of fiber x-ray sensor. Therefore, the second reason of the over-response phenomenon is believed to be fact that the inorganic materials such as Gd2O2S:Tb have larger effective atomic numbers, so the fiber x-ray sensors will cause more collisions with x-ray in a low energy region of 0.1 MeV–1.5 MeV. Both monolithic and semi-monolithic scintillator positron emission tomography (PET) detectors can measure the depth of interaction with single-ended readout. Usually scintillators with a thickness of 10 mm or less are used since the position resolutions of the detectors degrade as the scintillator thickness increases. In this work, the performance of a 20 mm thick long rectangular semi-monolithic scintillator PET detector was measured by using both single-ended and dual-ended readouts with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays to provide a high detection efficiency. The semi-monolithic scintillator detector consists of nine lutetium–yttrium oxyorthosilicate slices measuring 1.37 × 51.2 × 20 mm3 with erythrocyte sedimentation rate foils of 0.065 mm thickness in between the slices. The SiPM array at each end of the scintillator detector consists of 16 × 4 SiPMs with a pixel size of 3.0 × 3.0 mm2 and a pitch of 3.2 mm. The 64 signals of each SiPM array are processed by using the TOFPET2 application-specific integrated circuit individually. All but the edge slices can be clearly resolved for the detectors with both single-ended and dual-ended readouts. The single-ended readout detector provides an average full width at half maximum (FWHM) Y (continuous direction) position resolution of 2.43 mm, Z (depth direction) position resolution of 4.77 mm, energy resolution of 25.7% and timing resolution of 779 ps. The dual-ended readout detector significantly improves the Y and Z position resolutions, slightly improves the energy and timing resolution at the cost of two photodetectors required for one detector module and provides an average FWHM Y position resolution of 1.97 mm, Z position resolution of 2.60 mm, energy resolution of 21.7% and timing resolution of 718 ps. The energy and timing resolution of the semi-monolithic scintillator detector in this work are worse than those of the segmented scintillator array detector and need to be further improved. The semi-monolithic scintillator detector described in this work reduces costs as compared to the traditional segmented scintillator array detector and reduces the edge effect as compared to the monolithic scintillator detector. The plasma that accelerates and compresses in the formation of the pinch in dense plasma focus devices has been found to be an abundant source of multiple radiations like ion beams and x-rays. In this work, the ion beam and x-ray emissions from a 2.7 kJ (13.5 kV, 30 µF) plasma focus device operated at pressure below 1 mbar were investigated. The time profile of the ion beam emission was analysed from the simultaneously measured ion beam, soft and hard x-ray signals using biased ion collectors, BPX 65 silicon PIN diode and a scintillator-photomultiplier tube assembly. Time resolved analysis of the emissions revealed that the emission of the ion beam corresponded to several different pinching instances. Two components of the ion beam were identified. An ion beam of lower energy but higher intensity was emitted followed by an ion beam of higher energy but lower intensity in the first plasma pinch. The ion beam emitted from the first plasma pinch also has higher energy than subsequent plasma pinches. The emission was found to be associated with the amplitude of voltage spike. The results from ion beam and electron beams suggest that they were emitted by the same localized electric field induced in the pinched plasma. The strongest plasma focus discharge indicated by sharp voltage spike of high amplitude and highest ion beam energy were both observed at 0.2 mbar. The average energy of the ion beam obtained is (53 ± 13) keV. At this optimum condition, the ions beam with the highest energy also led to the highest hard x-ray emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We are exploring a scintillator-based PET detector with potential of high sensitivity, depth of interaction (DOI) capability, and timing resolution, with single-side readout. Our design combines two previous concepts: (1) multiple scintillator arrays stacked with relative offset, yielding inherent DOI information, but good timing performance has not been demonstrated with conventional light sharing readout. (2) Single crystal array with one-to-one coupling to the photodetector, showing superior timing performance compared to its light sharing counterparts, but lacks DOI. The combination, where the first layer of a staggered design is coupled one-to-one to a photodetector array, may provide both DOI and timing resolution and this concept is here evaluated through light transport simulations. Results show that: (1) unpolished crystal pixels in the staggered configuration yield better performance across all metrics compared to polished pixels, regardless of readout scheme. (2) One-to-one readout of the first layer allows for accurate DOI extraction using a single threshold. The number of multi pixel photon counter (MPPC) pixels with signal amplitudes exceeding the threshold corresponds to the interaction layer. This approach was not possible with conventional light sharing readout. (3) With a threshold of 2 optical photons, the layered approach with one-to-one coupled first layer improves timing close to the MPPC compared to the conventional one-to-one coupling non-DOI detector, due to effectively reduced crystal thickness. Single detector timing resolution values of 91, 127, 151 and 164 ps were observed per layer in the 4-layer design, to be compared to 148 ps for the single array with one-to-one coupling. (4) For the layered design with light sharing readout, timing improves with increased MPPC pixel size due to higher signal per channel. In conclusion, the combination of straightforward DOI determination, good timing performance, and relatively simple design makes the proposed concept promising fo DOI-Time-of-Flight PET detectors. In this work, a new method of range verification for proton therapy (PT) is experimentally demonstrated for the first time. If a metal marker is implanted near the tumour site, its response to proton activation will result in the emission of characteristic γ rays. The relative intensity of γ rays originating from competing fusion-evaporation reaction channels provides a unique signature of the average proton energy at the marker, and by extension the beam's range, in vivo and in real time. The clinical feasibility of this method was investigated at the PT facility at TRIUMF with a proof-of-principle experiment which irradiated a naturally-abundant molybdenum foil at various proton beam energies. Delayed characteristic γ rays were measured with two Compton-shielded LaBr3 scintillators. The technique was successfully demonstrated by relating the relative intensity of two γ-ray peaks to the energy of the beam at the Mo target, opening the door to future clinical applications where the range of the beam can be verified in real time. A sensitive photodetection based on a novel hybrid CMOS inverter has been demonstrated. Unlike common photo-current type photodetectors, which convert optical signals to current, the CMOS inverter realizes voltage–output, overcoming the difficulty to monitor current signal in the range of nA. The hybrid CMOS logic inverter employs n-channel MoS2 nanosheet/perovskite heterojunction FET and p-channel organic pentacene FET in a planar architecture. In order to obtain high performance, we adopt the interdigital electrodes for the pentacene FET to enhance the current density of the p-channel, and stack perovskite on the MoS2 channel to modify the threshold voltage of the n-channel. As a result, a CMOS inverter with a voltage gain of more than ten is obtained. When VIN is around the transition voltage (−38 V), the inverter can obtain stable optical detection signal, the VOUT changes from 6 V in dark to 1 V under 633 nm light exposure. This finding indicates the potential to fabricate visible light detecting devices with voltage–output based on the inverter and may be further applicable for a photo-logic circuit. The purpose of this work is to develop a validated Geant4 simulation model of a whole-body prototype PET scanner constructed from the four-layer depth-of-interaction detectors developed at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology, Japan. The simulation model emulates the behaviour of the unique depth of interaction sensing capability of the scanner without needing to directly simulate optical photon transport in the scintillator and photodetector modules. The model was validated by evaluating and comparing performance metrics from the NEMA NU 2-2012 protocol on both the simulated and physical scanner, including spatial resolution, sensitivity, scatter fraction, noise equivalent count rates and image quality. The results show that the average sensitivities of the scanner in the field-of-view were 5.9 cps kBq−1 and 6.0 cps kBq−1 for experiment and simulation, respectively. The average spatial resolutions measured for point sources placed at several radial offsets were 5.2± 0.7 mm and 5.0± 0.8 mm FWHM for experiment and simulation, respectively. The peak NECR was 22.9 kcps at 7.4 kBq ml−1 for the experiment, while the NECR obtained via simulation was 23.3 kcps at the same activity. The scatter fractions were 44% and 41.3% for the experiment and simulation, respectively. Contrast recovery estimates performed in different regions of a simulated image quality phantom matched the experimental results with an average error of -8.7% and +3.4% for hot and cold lesions, respectively. The results demonstrate that the developed Geant4 model reliably reproduces the key NEMA NU 2-2012 performance metrics evaluated on the prototype PET scanner. We propose and evaluate the performance of an improved preclinical positron emission tomography (PET) scanner design, referred to as Polaroid-PET, consisting of a detector equipped with a layer of horizontal Polaroid to filter scintillation photons with vertical polarization. This makes it possible to improve the spatial resolution of PET scanners based on monolithic crystals. First, a detector module based on a lutetium-yttrium orthosilicate monolithic crystal with 10 mm thickness and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) was implemented in the GEANT4 Monte Carlo toolkit. Subsequently, a layer of Polaroid was inserted between the crystal and the SiPMs. Two preclinical PET scanners based on ten detector modules with and without Polaroid were simulated. The performance of the proposed detector modules and corresponding PET scanner for the two configurations (with and without Polaroid) was assessed using standard performance parameters, including spatial resolution, sensitivity, optical photon ratio detected for positioning, and image quality. The detector module fitted with Polaroid led to higher spatial resolution (1.05 mm FWHM) in comparison with a detector without Polaroid (1.30 mm FHWM) for a point source located at the center of the detector module. From 100% of optical photons produced in the scintillator crystal, 65% and 66% were used for positioning in the detectors without and with Polaroid, respectively. Polaroid-PET resulted in higher axial spatial resolution (0.83 mm FWHM) compared to the scanner without Polaroid (1.01 mm FWHM) for a point source at the center of the field of view (CFOV). The absolute sensitivity at the CFOV was 4.37% and 4.31% for regular and Polaroid-PET, respectively. Planar images of a grid phantom demonstrated the potential of the detector with a Polaroid in distinguishing point sources located at close distances. Our results indicated that Polaroid-PET may improve spatial resolution by filtering the reflected optical photons according to their polarization state, while retaining the high sensitivity expected with monolithic crystal detector blocks. The purpose of this study is to leverage radioluminescence imaging for the development of an automated high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy quality assurance (QA) system that enables simultaneous measurements of dwell position, dwell time, wire velocity, and relative source strength in a single test. The system consists of a radioluminescence phosphor sheet (a mixture of Gd2O2S:Tb and PDMS) positioned atop a HDR needle applicator, a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor digital camera used to capture the emitted radioluminescence signals from the scintillator sheet, and an in-house graphical user interface for signal processing. The signal processing was used to extract source intensity, location, and elapsed time, yielding the final measurements on dwell position, dwell time, and wire velocity. The source strength relative to the well chamber calibration (in unit of Air-Kerma strength, Sk) is measured by establishing a calibration curve that correlates Sk with the detector response. Validation experiments are performed using three customized treatment plans. With these plans, the dwell position and dwell time are verified for a range of 110.0 cm–117.5 cm and 2 s–16 s, respectively, and the linear correlation with Sk is demonstrated for the source strength varying between 28 348 U (cGy cm2 h−1) and 41 906 U. The wire velocity, i.e. the speed of the radioactive source averaged over the distance in between dwell positions, is calculated for various distances ranging from 5 mm to 50 mm. Results show that the mean deviations of the measured dwell position and dwell time are 0.1 mm (range from 0 to 0.2 mm) and 32.5 ms (range from 0 to 60.0 ms) with respect to the planned values, respectively, and the system response is highly linear with Sk(R2 = 0.998). Moreover, the measured wire velocities are comparable to previously reported values. An emerging prospect of solution-processed organic–inorganic hybrid halide perovskites is promising for next generation x-ray imaging applications. Herein, the optical and x-ray scintillation properties of lead-free two-dimensional perovskite crystals are reported, i.e. X2MnCl4 (X = PEA, PPA). At room temperature (RT), the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of both crystals show a peak around 600 nm with the lifetime between 3 and 4 µs, making them applicable for scintillator in x-ray imaging applications. Materials with a small electronic band gap of about 2 eV may allow a good promise for high-light-yield scintillators. On the other hand, x-ray luminescence (XL) measurements for both crystals show no spectra at RT, while those at 10 K exhibit the similar features observed in PL spectra. Temperature-dependent XL intensities reveal thermal quenching behaviour with activation energies between 40 and 54 meV. Thermoluminescence (TL) and glow curves in both crystals show residual luminescence background as slow as 1648 s and some deep traps with energies as large as 190 meV. Thermal quenching and TL measurements of both crystals are the opposite of those of PEA2PbCl4 crystals. Although some properties may not be beneficial for scintillators, the small differences of scintillation properties in both crystals may provide direction for the new designs of high-light-yield lead-free perovskite single crystal scintillators. The imaging neutral particle analyzer (INPA) is a scintillator-based diagnostic that provides energy and radially resolved measurements of confined fast ions. To verify operation, understanding and modeling of the diagnostic performance, distributions of deuterium beam ions in low density, nearly MHD-quiescent plasmas are measured on the DIII-D tokamak using the INPA. The distribution is altered by changing the pitch-angle scattering rate with electron cyclotron heating (ECH). Experimental images are mostly reproduced with simulation of core fast ions charge exchanging with injected beam and edge cold neutrals in classical cases. Image comparisons between the experiment and simulation show agreement with less than 25% discrepancies near the beam injection energy of 50 keV. Other strong passive signals, observed in a localized region on the image, are suggested to come from charge exchange between cold neutrals and fast ions around the plasma boundary. Organic plastic scintillation detectors (PSDs) are known to produce less light per absorbed dose in highly dense radiations in comparison with e.g. 60Co gamma beams. This so-called ionization density quenching can be experimentally determined by comparison of the scintillator output with the absorbed dose established with a reference detector. The hypothesis of this work was that a newly developed small-core graphite calorimeter (core size: ř5mm × 7mm) can be used as reference for such measurements. The potential benefit of a calorimetric reference would be to have a robust and accurate reference with well-understood dosimetry properties even in high-intensity FLASH beams. As a first step, the hypothesis was tested by comparing previously established quenching parameter estimates for the BCF-60 scintillating material with data obtained with the new instrument at different depths along the central axis of a 170 MeV scanned proton beam. After the calorimetric measurements, scintillator measurements were acquired under equivalent conditions by positioning the PSD in a replica graphite core nominally identical to the core used for calorimetry. To experimentally document details of the irradiations, the spot width was mapped along the central beam axis using a new technique based on a PSD and a time-to-distance conversion procedure. Analysing the proton data in the framework of the Birks model, the graphite calorimeter gave a quenching parameter for BCF-60 in agreement with literature values. The consistency between the calorimetric results and the other sources of information supports the validity of the new method, and we therefore aim to apply it for characterization of other detectors in more intense beams where ionometry cannot serve as reference. In positron emission tomography (PET) with pixelated detectors, a significant number of annihilation photons interact with scintillation crystals through single or multiple Compton scattering events. When these partial energy depositions occur across multiple crystal elements, we call them inter-crystal scatter (ICS) events. ICS events lead to incorrect localization of the annihilation photons, thereby degrading the PET image contrast, spatial resolution, and lesion detectability. The accurate identification of ICS events is the first essential step to improve the quality of PET images by rejecting ICS events or recovering ICS events without losing PET sensitivity. In this study, we propose a novel silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout method to identify ICS events in one-to-one coupled PET detectors with a reduced number of data acquisition channels. For concept verification, we assembled a PET detector that consists of a 16-channel SiPM array and 4 4 lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) array with a 3.2 mm crystal pitch. The proposed SiPM readout scheme serializes the 16 SiPM anode signals into four pulse train outputs encoded with four increasing time-delays in steps of 250 ns intervals. A Sum signal of the 16 SiPM anodes provides the timing information for time-of-flight measurement and a trigger signal for coincidence detection. A time-over-threshold (TOT) method was applied for obtaining the energy information followed by a subsequent TOT-to-energy calibration. We successfully identified the ICS events and determined their interacted positions and deposited energies by analyzing the digital pulses from the four pulse train output channels. The occurrence rate of ICS events was 10.85% for the 4 × 4 PET detector module with 3.2 mm-pitch LSO crystals. The PET detector yielded an energy resolution of 10.9 0.6% and coincidence timing resolution of 285 12 ps FWHM. We expect that the proposed method can be a useful solution for alleviating the readout burden of SiPM-based PET scanners with ICS event identification capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
