To calibrate non-contact sensors with fast response and high scale factor, it is critical to develop step pulse generators capable of generating standard high voltage step pulses and accurately measuring the generated waveform. In this paper, two types of step pulse generators are designed with output voltages of 2 kV and 100 kV. The 2 kV step pulse generator can generate a step pulse with a rise time of ∼300 ps and an adjustable pulse width. A step pulse with a rise time less than 5 ns and a pulse width over 1 μs can be generated with the 100 kV step pulse generator. The uncertainty of 2 kV step pulse generator is then analyzed by simulations and experiments. Finally, a performance comparison with step pulse generators in previous studies is carried out. The increased availability of quantitative historical datasets has provided new research opportunities for multiple disciplines in social science. In this article, we work closely with the constructors of a new dataset, CGED-Q (China Government Employee Database-Qing), that records the career trajectories of over 340,000 government officials in the Qing bureaucracy in China from 1760 to 1912. We use these data to study career mobility from a historical perspective and understand social mobility and inequality. However, existing statistical approaches are inadequate for analyzing career mobility in this historical dataset with its fine-grained attributes and long time span, since they are mostly hypothesis-driven and require substantial effort. We propose CareerLens, an interactive visual analytics system for assisting experts in exploring, understanding, and reasoning from historical career data. With CareerLens, experts examine mobility patterns in three levels-of-detail, namely, the macro-level providing a summary of overall mobility, the meso-level extracting latent group mobility patterns, and the micro-level revealing social relationships of individuals. We demonstrate the effectiveness and usability of CareerLens through two case studies and receive encouraging feedback from follow-up interviews with domain experts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We demonstrate broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in a piece of indium fluoride fiber pumped by an ultralow repetition rate noise-like pulse mode-locked fiber laser. This figure-9 mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser has a long laser cavity by inserting a piece of standard single mode fiber and a piece of dispersion compensation fiber, which delivers mode-locked noise-like pulse with a repetition rate of ∼190 kHz. The mode-locked noise-like pulse train has a low pulse duty cycle of 4.38 × 10−4. With only one Tm-doped fiber amplifier, the ultra-low repetition rate noise-like pulse is amplified to ∼3 W. The pulse energy is boosted to ∼15 μJ with a peak power of ∼6.5 kW. Pumping a piece of highly nonlinear indium fluoride fiber with the amplified noise-like pulse, a flat mid-infrared supercontinuum with a covering range from ∼1500 nm to ∼4100 nm can be achieved. Due to the low operational power, no cooling installations are required to control the temperature of the supercontinuum laser system. This all-fiber mid-infrared SC laser source has a relatively simple architecture and low cost. A detailed analysis of theexcited state absorption (ESA) transition 4I13/2→4I9/2 which occurs in erbium (Er) doped ZBLAN fiber lasers is performed through numerical modeling. It is found that the ESA plays a significant role in enhancing the 2.8 μm lasing of Er3+ ions. The ESA promotes the ions residing in 4I13/2 (the lower state of the 2.8 μm laser) to 4I9/2, where the ions subsequently decay to 4I11/2 (the upper state of the 2.8 μm laser) rapidly. An energy recycling is consequently realized via the ESA. The ESA can be activated in cascaded 2.8 μm/1.6 μm Er-doped ZBLAN fiber lasers by absorbing the 1.6 μm signal. Through numerical simulation it is found that in cascaded lasers the slope efficiency of the 2.8 μm laser can be elevated to ∼48% with the assistance of the ESA, a value that surpasses the Stokes limit (∼35%) substantially and agrees well with the experimental results previously reported. It is also found that the ESA-induced energy recycling is exothermic, an effect that is non-ignorable in the high-power circumstance. Moreover, the injection of an additional 1.6 μm pump for directly exploiting the 4I13/2→4I9/2 ESA is simulated using the model. It is found that as the second pump is introduced, the 2.8 μm lasing almost entirely relies on the ESA-induced energy recycling, and hence, the laser is capable of operating under very low 976 nm pump power. The simulation results indicate that the 2.8 μm lasing in Er-doped ZBLAN fiber lasers can even be realized using a single 1.6 μm pump, via a combination of the 4I15/2→4I13/2 and 4I13/2→4I9/2 transition. In table tennis, tactics specified by three consecutive strokes represent the high-level competition strategies in matches. Effective detection and analysis of tactics can reveal the playing styles of players, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. However, tactical analysis in table tennis is challenging as the analysts can often be overwhelmed by the large quantity and high dimension of the data. Statistical charts have been extensively used by researchers to explore and visualize table tennis data. However, these charts cannot support efficient comparative and correlation analysis of complicated tactic attributes. Besides, existing studies are limited to the analysis of one match. However, one player's strategy can change along with his/her opponents in different matches. Therefore, the data of multiple matches can support a more comprehensive tactical analysis. To address these issues, we introduced a visual analytics system called Tac-Miner to allow analysts to effectively analyze, explore, and compare tactics of multiple matches based on the advanced embedding and dimension reduction algorithms along with an interactive glyph. A 1/1.5 μm dual-band mode-locked fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated. The laser is based upon an architecture in which the 1 μm and the 1.5 μm signals are generated in independent cavities that share the identical active fiber. The mode-locking of the 1 μm laser is realized via nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE), whilst the 1.5 μm laser is mode-locked through cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced by the 1 μm laser and the mode-locking is further stabilized by NPE. In soccer, passing is the most frequent interaction between players and plays a significant role in creating scoring chances. Experts are interested in analyzing players' passing behavior to learn passing tactics, i.e., how players build up an attack with passing. Various approaches have been proposed to facilitate the analysis of passing tactics. However, the dynamic changes of a team's employed tactics over a match have not been comprehensively investigated. To address the problem, we closely collaborate with domain experts and characterize requirements to analyze the dynamic changes of a team's passing tactics. To characterize the passing tactic employed for each attack, we propose a topic-based approach that provides a high-level abstraction of complex passing behaviors. Based on the model, we propose a glyph-based design to reveal the multi-variate information of passing tactics within different phases of attacks, including player identity, spatial context, and formation. We further design and develop PassVizor, a visual analytics system, to support the comprehensive analysis of passing dynamics. With the system, users can detect the changing patterns of passing tactics and examine the detailed passing process for evaluating passing tactics. As a means to thwart thermal covert channel attack in a multi-/many-core system, a strong heat noise whose frequency band coincides with that occupied by the thermal covert channel is injected to jam the channel. However, this undiscriminating channel jamming-based countermeasure will fail if a thermal covert channel is allowed to change its transmission frequency dynamically in response to the jamming. To combat this enhanced thermal covert channel, a more advanced countermeasure is needed and thus proposed that checks the frequency spectrum and tracks any possible covert channel. Only after a channel is detected to be susceptible, a thermal noise with this channel frequency is then emitted to jam the covert channel. The communication protocols and frequency changing scheme pertaining to this enhanced thermal covert channel are described in this article. The experimental results confirm that, when the proposed countermeasure is applied, the enhanced thermal covert channel, much more resilient to jamming, suffers from an extremely high packet error rate (PER), which makes any meaningful data leakage practically impossible. As the proposed countermeasure method is poised to contain dangerous thermal covert channel attacks with an anti-jamming capability, it lends itself well to secure multi-/many-core systems. Simulative analysis in competitive sports can provide prospective insights, which can help improve the performance of players in future matches. However, adequately simulating the complex competition process and effectively explaining the simulation result to domain experts are typically challenging. This work presents a design study to address these challenges in table tennis. We propose a well-established hybrid second-order Markov chain model to characterize and simulate the competition process in table tennis. Compared with existing methods, our approach is the first to support the effective simulation of tactics, which represent high-level competition strategies in table tennis. Furthermore, we introduce a visual analytics system called Tac-Simur based on the proposed model for simulative visual analytics. Tac-Simur enables users to easily navigate different players and their tactics based on their respective performance in matches to identify the player and the tactics of interest for further analysis. Then, users can utilize the system to interactively explore diverse simulation tasks and visually explain the simulation results. The effectiveness and usefulness of this work are demonstrated by two case studies, in which domain experts utilize Tac-Simur to find interesting and valuable insights. Owing to the strong penetration ability of X-rays and the imaging visibility, X-ray inspection has been gradually applied to power grids. However, various problems occur in the promotion and application of X-ray inspection in ultra high voltage gas-insulated switchgear (UHV GIS) owing to its large size. These problems relate to parameter selection, photography, protection area, random defect recognition, and risk assessment based on the X-ray image. In this paper, an X-ray digital imaging system is set up for UHV GIS inspection. Parameter selection for UHV GIS is discussed, and we demonstrate that UHV GIS can be photographed under a source-to-detector distance (SDD) of 2.8 m, a tube voltage of 300 kV, and an exposure of >240 mA·s. A photographic method for UHV GIS, entailing adjustment of the position of the imaging plate with a fixed position of the X-ray generator, is proposed to reduce the difficulty in image stitching. The influence of the parameters on imaging quality is discussed, and we show that the brightness and contrast increase with increasing exposure or decreasing SDD. The interactions between parameters are qualitatively introduced. Moreover, the sensitivity of X-ray inspection in UHV GIS is studied under selected parameters, and the sensitivity of X-ray inspection to copper particles and aluminum particles in UHV GIS are shown to be <0.7 mm and <1.1 mm, respectively. Radiation protection for operators is also discussed. In addition, a pseudo-color scheme for identifying random tiny defects is proposed to reduce human error. A theoretical model to describe in-band pumped holmium doped silica fiber lasers is presented. The model is established based upon theory and parameters obtained from published research works. Both core-pumped system and cladding-pumped system are simulated with the model. The simulation results agree well with most experimental results, and for the cases in which the simulation results show discrepancy with the experimental results the disagreement can be reasonably explained. Through numerical analysis it is found that besides common negative factors such as non-radiative decay, fiber loss, and non-optimized resonator configuration, energy transfer upconversion plays a deleterious role in the performance of in-band pumped holmium doped silica fiber lasers. In particular, inhomogeneous upconversion associated with ion clustering is found to cause significant degradation of slope efficiencies of lasers, a fact that is useful to understand the unsolved problem regarding the lower-than-expected slope efficiencies observed in previous studies of in-band pumped holmium doped fiber lasers. The direction of arrival (DoA) estimation performance of three different coarray structures, namely, the nested array, the coprime sampling array, and the sparse ruler array are presented and compared. The coarray concept makes it possible to detect the DoAs of much more sources than the number of physical antennas. Crucial is that for the first time, these coarrays are investigated based on real measurements conducted on a demonstrator platform. Based on the results obtained, the conclusion is clear. The MUSIC algorithm-based coarray concept with spatial smoothing is not suitable for DoA estimation in practical circumstances due to the unavoidable multipath phenomenon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rapid development of information technology paved the way for the recording of fine-grained data, such as stroke techniques and stroke placements, during a table tennis match. This data recording creates opportunities to analyze and evaluate matches from new perspectives. Nevertheless, the increasingly complex data poses a significant challenge to make sense of and gain insights into. Analysts usually employ tedious and cumbersome methods which are limited to watching videos and reading statistical tables. However, existing sports visualization methods cannot be applied to visualizing table tennis competitions due to different competition rules and particular data attributes. In this work, we collaborate with data analysts to understand and characterize the sophisticated domain problem of analysis of table tennis data. We propose iTTVis, a novel interactive table tennis visualization system, which to our knowledge, is the first visual analysis system for analyzing and exploring table tennis data. iTTVis provides a holistic visualization of an entire match from three main perspectives, namely, time-oriented, statistical, and tactical analyses. The proposed system with several well-coordinated views not only supports correlation identification through statistics and pattern detection of tactics with a score timeline but also allows cross analysis to gain insights. Overheating is one of the severe defects in gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). However, researches on decomposition characteristics of SF6 under overheating conditions are relatively limited. In this paper, SF6 decomposition products are studied under three overheating conditions which are overheating of solid insulation, overheating of metal, and overheating of metal adjacent to insulating material. Influence of overheating temperature, gas pressure, initial moisture content and adsorbent on the decomposition characteristics of SF6 is discussed. The results show that typical decomposition products of SF6 under overheating of solid insulation are H2, CO, CO2, CH4, SOF2, SO2, H2S, COS and CF4, and typical decomposition products of SF6 under overheating of metal are SOF2, SO2, CO and CO2. Besides, typical decomposition products of SF6 under overheating of metal adjacent to insulating material are CO, CO2, SOF2, SO2, CF4, CS2 and COS. Types of overheating can be recognized by characteristic ratio of (SOF2+SO2)/(CO+CO2): for overheating of solid insulation, the ratio is 0 to 0.25, and for overheating involving metal, it is greater than 1. The capillary-based pulsed plasma thruster (PPT) has high-energy transfer efficiency, which provides potential to improve traditional PPT performance. In this paper, the discharge characteristics of a capillary-based PPT have been investigated. First, the typical process of voltage and current waveform is recognized. It is featured with a fast voltage drop (~25 ns) and a consequent damped sine wave oscillation discharge. Then based on the circuit analysis, the equivalent plasma resistance has been calculated. The current waveform is well fit with a linearly increasing resistance model. The influence of charging voltage has also been studied. The deposited energy increases while the transfer efficiency decreases with the increasing applied voltage. The cavity dimension has effects on the equivalent circuit parameters. The results show that longer cavity and smaller diameter lead to more deposited energy and higher transfer efficiency. The influence of voltage and capillary dimension on the mass shot characteristic has been discussed. Finally, the estimated impulse bit has been calculated and the impulse bit characteristics have been discussed. These results can contribute to the further optimization of PPT. The lifetime tests for High Voltage Ceramic Capacitors (HVCC) were investigated under repetitive frequency operation at 25 Hz and three kinds of failure modes were summarized. The significant innovation of this paper is testing HVCC, made in the laboratory, under repetitive pulses and proposing several effective improvement methods. The results show that the lifetime of HVCC meets inverse power-law with the applied voltage and the voltage acceleration factor is about 5.8. Failure modes of HVCC are inner breakdown of ceramic dielectric, interface breakdown of ceramic-epoxy and abscission of brass terminals. The inner breakdown is in connection with abrupt destructive discharge under much higher stress while the interface breakdown is related to interface delamination and development of electrical trees in relatively low strength. The third failure mode is always caused by high current density. Based on the failure modes, several methods were taken to improve the performance of HVCC, which included coating semiconductor at the edge of silver layers, adding coupling agent to ceramic-epoxy interface and improving the structure of brass terminals. The lifetime of HVCC under repetitive frequency operation has been extended greatly from 103 shots to more than 105 shots after the investigation and improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
