Summary: Solar steam generation has proven to be a sustainable method to handle water shortage. Various materials for solar steam generation have been introduced in the past few years. However, the utilization of tedious and complicated synthesis to generate a photoactive layer is a matter of concern in the fabrication solar steam generation devices. Thus, improved methods toward cost‐effectiveness by exploring economical materials with simple manufacturing process are urgently and essentially needed. In this study, we first report on manufacturing hybrid membranes using commercially accessible materials, that is, cellulose paper and pencil graphite. The proposed method is to trace and coat a cellulose paper directly with a pencil without the use of solvents and chemicals, and it is possible to create an ecofriendly photoactive layer without a complicated process. The formed pencil graphite‐traced membranes were successfully utilized in solar steam generation and showed excellent steam generation rate of 4.32 kg/m2h which is almost 3.5 times more than that of pristine membrane at solar intensity of 3 Sun. The developed method could be widely utilized in the field of solar steam generation, since it is very facile and simple, and can be integrated to other commonly used materials for solar steam generation such as fabric and wood. Paper is one of the most widely used materials, due to its application in books, packaging, and office supplies. However, conventional paper has many disadvantages, such as low tensile strength, poor resistance to water and oil contamination, lack of antigraffiti capability, and easily deformed by moisture. Therefore, we proposed a double-layer protective coating that consists of a polyurethane (PU) bottom layer, to enhance tensile strength, and a top polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite layer to enable antigraffiti and contamination-resistant capabilities. In the study, a double-layer coating was applied to conventional paper, using a simple two-step spraying method. The results showed that the prepared coating structure exhibited outstanding self-cleaning characteristics with respect to both water and oil contamination and adequately demonstrated antigraffiti capability. Moreover, the coating maintained superhydrophobic and oil-stain resistance after four months of outdoor storage. Finally, the tensile strength of the coated paper was 6.3 times as high as that of the original paper, making this coating structure a promising solution to the problems that limit paper from being more widely utilized in commercial and consumer application. In the peak period of a railway system, operators typically add additional trains to provide increased capacity to satisfy the increasing passenger demand. The paper proposes a new optimization framework for designing the operation plan, which includes the number of additional trains, train type, stop plan, and timetable, for additional trains in a peak period. A space-time network representation is used to obtain a feasible primary operation plan by finding a set of feasible space-time paths in the space-time network. Considering simultaneously the passenger demand and the trains' total travel times, we formulate a biobjective integer programming model for generating a cost and passenger responsible primary operation plan. A set of loading capacity constraints are formulated in the model to guarantee a suitable loading capacity for each station's passenger demand and better service for passengers. The CPLEX solver is used to solve the proposed model and to generate the optimal operation plan. Two sets of numerical experiments are conducted on a small-scale rail corridor and on the Wuhan-Guangzhou rail corridor to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Analytical filter papers are generally made of fibrous cellulose which has the potential to adsorb metal ions. In this study, blue band ashless filter paper was used to demonstrate one of the sources of error in the determination of the concentration of Fe2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ ions. For this purpose, the metal ion content of standard solutions in the 1-100 mg/l concentration range was analysed via FAAS before and after the filtration process. The corresponding results and the calculated percentage errors due to adsorption are presented. The effect of pH on the adsorption process was also investigated. Activated carbon and soil samples were spiked with each metal ion and the solid phases from the resulting solutions were separated by both filter paper methods and centrifugation. In the statistical estimation of the results, the paired t-test was applied for non-filtered and filtered solutions in the concentration range 1-100 mg/l using the data analysis tools available in MS Excel®. The use of filter paper caused systematic errors, particularly at lower metal concentrations, and hence centrifugation or a filtering process using techniques other than filter paper is favoured as a better approach towards estimating the concentration of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution.
