The fruits of four wild plants, namely, Capparis decidua, Ficus carica, Syzygium cumini, and Ziziphus jujuba, are separately used as traditional dietary and remedial agents in remote areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.The results of our study on these four plants revealed that the examined fruits were a valuable source of nutraceuticals and exhibited good level of antimicrobial activity. The fruits of these four investigated plants are promising source of polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, and saponins. These four plants' fruits are good sources of iron, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium, and chromium. It was also observed that these fruits are potential source of antioxidant agent and the possible reason could be that these samples had good amount of phytochemicals. Hence, the proper propagation, conservation, and chemical investigation are recommended so that these fruits should be incorporated for the eradication of food and health related problems. The undertaken study was conducted to find out the seroprevalence and coinfection of HBV and HCV infection among patients seeking hospital care. A total of 845 samples were received at tertiary care hospital of Islamabad and were screened for hepatitis B and C. The ELISA was used to detect antigen for HBV and antibodies for HCV in patient serum. Among 845 collected samples, 255 (30.1%) were seropositive for HBV and HCV. Out of 255 seropositive samples, 45 (5.3%) were positive for HBsAg while 199 (23.5%) were positive for anti-HCV. Among 255, 11 (1.3%) were seropositive for both HBsAg and anti-HCV (coinfection). Among the seropositive male, HBV was more prevalent (23.8%) while female patients had a high incidence of HCV (52.2%). Among the age group variable, HBV, HCV, and coinfection were found to be more common in the age groups of 21-30 (29%) and 30-40 (24%) years. The seropositivity for HBsAg was higher in unmarried individuals (31.2%) while anti-HCV was more prevalent in married individuals (84%).The present study provides the preliminary information about high HCV and HBV prevalence. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of cigarette smoking on gingival bleeding and serum concentrations of cotinine, haptoglobin, and alpha 1-antitrypsin in Malaysian smokers. A total of 197 male smokers and nonsmokers were recruited for this study. Plaque index, bleeding on probing (BOP), and levels of serum cotinine, haptoglobin, and alpha 1-antitrypsin were evaluated. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0, with the significance level set at α ≤ 0.05. Linear regression analyses were performed. The mean cigarette consumption per day was 13.39 ± 5.75 cigarettes; the mean duration was 16.03 ± 8.78 years. Relatively low BOP values (26.05 ± 1.48) and moderate plaque indexes (51.35 ± 11.27) were found. The levels of serum cotinine (106.9±30.71 ng/dL), haptoglobin (76.04 ± 52.48 mg/dL), and alpha 1-antitrypsin (141.90 ± 18.40 mg/dL) were significantly higher in smokers compared to non-smokers. Multiple logistic regression models for all variables and smokers demonstrated observed differences between BOP, the number of cigarettes per day, and duration of smoking, while serum cotinine, haptoglobin and alpha-1 antitrypsin levels showed no significant differences. Duration of smoking (years) and the cotinine level in serum showed a significant correlation with plaque index. The present analysis demonstrated that the duration of smoking in years, but not the number of cigarettes smoked per day, was associated with reduced gingival bleeding in smokers. Alveolar bone resorption is one of the most important facts in denture construction. Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) causes alveolar bone resorption, and morphologic measurements are the most frequent methods to identify bone resorption in periodontal studies. This study has aimed at evaluating the effect of Andrographolide (AND) on alveolar bone resorption in rats induced by Pg. 24 healthy male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into four groups as follows: normal control group and three experimental groups challenged orally with Pg ATCC 33277 five times a week supplemented with 20 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg of AND for twelve weeks. Alveolar bones of the left and right sides of the mandible were assessed by a morphometric method. The bone level, that is, the distance from the alveolar bone crest to cementumenamel junction (CEJ), was measured using 6.1: 1 zoom stereomicroscope and software. AND reduced the effect of Pg on alveolar bone resorption and decreased the serum levels of Hexanoyl-Lysine (HEL); furthermore the reduced glutathione/oxidised glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio in AND treated groups (10 and 20 mg/kg) significantly increased when compared with the Pg group (P < 0.05). Objective. This study was performed to develop a biodegradable periodontal chip containing thymoquinone and to evaluate its effectiveness for managing chronic periodontitis. Methods. Chips were formulated from thymoquinone and chitosan. Twelve patients with periodontal pockets measuring ⩾5 mm participated in this study. Overall, 180 periodontal pockets were evaluated. At day zero, all patients were treated with full-mouth scaling and root planning. Periodontal pockets were divided into three groups. Group one served as the control group, while group two received plain chitosan chips. Group three received chips containing thymoquinone. Plaque index, bleeding upon probing, periodontal probing pocket depths, and clinical attachment levels were recorded at days 0 and 60. Results. The statistical significance of differences was tested with a paired sample t-test, a Chi-squared test, and a one-way ANOVA. The results indicated significant improvement in plaque index and bleeding upon probing and a reduction in periodontal pockets from baseline in all four groups (P < 0.05). Gains in clinical attachment levels were significantly higher (P < 0.005) in the group receiving thymoquinone chips compared to other groups. Conclusion. Periodontal chips containing thymoquinone can be used as adjuncts for the treatment of patients with chronic periodontitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

El-Karaksy HM, Anwar G, Esmat G, Mansour S, Sabry M, Helmy H, El-Hennawy A, Fouad H. Prevalence of hepatic abnormalities in a cohort of Egyptian children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Background and aim: Children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) are frequently investigated for hepatic abnormalities. This study was carried out to report on the prevalence of hepatic abnormalities in diabetic children and adolescents and to highlight the possible etiology and appropriate management. Methods: The study included 692 children (333 were males) with T1DM attending the Diabetes Unit at Cairo University Pediatric Hospital. Their mean age was 9.65 ± 4.18 yr. All children were subjected to clinical examination for hepatomegaly, determination of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and antibodies to hepatitis C virus (anti-HCV), and abdominal ultrasonography. All children with clinical, laboratory or ultrasound abnormality were counseled about proper glycemic control and followed up. If abnormalities persisted, more detailed investigations were carried out. HCV RNA was done for anti-HCV positive children. Results: Sixty (8.7%) were found to have one or more abnormalities: clinical hepatomegaly in 13 (1.9%), elevated ALT in 27 (3.9%), anti-HCV in 25 (3.6%) and abnormal hepatic ultrasound in 31 (4.5%). Forty percent of anti-HCV positive children were HCV-RNA positive. Glycogenic hepatopathy was diagnosed in three cases by liver biopsy. Abnormalities were reversible in 37/60 after proper glycemic control. Conclusion: Although diabetic children are at risk of acquisition of HCV, poor glycemic control is the key factor that predisposes to hepatomegaly, elevated ALT and abnormal ultrasound findings. A 4 to 8-wk therapeutic trial of proper glycemic control is recommended prior to more invasive diagnostic procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work analyses the distribution, histology and ultrastructure of chromaffin cells (CCs) and interrenal tissue (It) in the head kidney of Epinephilus tauvina. Histological examination revealed that chromaffin cells are found in small groups under the endothelium of the posterior cardinal vein (PCV) and are mostly closely associated with the interrenal tissue. Ultrastructure examination confirmed the existence of two main chromaffin cell types, distinguished by different types of secretory granules. The first type was characterized by the presence of vesicles with round, strongly electron dense core granules, which were eccentrically located. Such cells were interpreted as being noradrenaline cells. Meanwhile, cells with vesicles that were completely electron lucent or that contained small less dense eccentric granules were identified as adrenaline cells. Nerve endings were invaginated into the chromaffin cells through synaptic junctions. Interrenal tissue consisted of nests, cords, or strands of cells in contact with the posterior cardinal vein (PCV) and interposed with haematopoietic tissue. Ultrastructure analysis revealed only one interrenal cell type, which contained abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum (sER) and numerous mitochondria with tubulo-vesicular cristae, characteristics of steroid-producing cells. The interrenal tissue cells have different cytological aspects that can be linked to a steroidogenic cell cycle allowing a periodical renewal of organelles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
