Abstract Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between head and neck posture and superficial neck flexor and extensor activity during performance of the craniocervical flexion test (CCFT) in women with migraine and healthy controls. Methods Fifty-two women with episodic migraine, 16 with chronic migraine, and 23 healthy controls participated. Head and neck posture were determined by assessing the craniovertebral (CV) angle and cervical lordosis angle. Surface electromyography signals were recorded bilaterally from sternocleidomastoid, anterior scalene, splenius capitis, and upper trapezius muscles as participants performed the CCFT. Differences in electromyogram activity and posture among groups were compared with analyses of variance. Correlations between posture and electromyogram activity were analyzed with the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results Both migraine groups had a significant increase in splenius capitis muscle activity, when acting as an antagonist, at the last stage of CCFT (F = 4.687; P =.012) compared with controls. No differences among groups were observed for head and neck posture. No significant correlation was found in the episodic migraine group. Moderate correlations between the CV angle and upper trapezius activity at the majority stages of the CCFT (-0.61 < r < -0.65, all P <.05) were observed within the chronic migraine group: the more extended the head posture, the higher the activity of the upper trapezius muscle. The CV angle also was correlated with upper trapezius muscle activity at the first stage of the CCFT and with splenius capitis muscle activity at the last stages (-0.42 < r < -0.52; P <.05). Conclusion An extended (forward) head posture was moderately correlated with an increased in electrical activity of superficial neck extensor muscles, particularly the upper trapezius, when acting as an antagonist, during the performance of the CCFT in women with chronic but not episodic migraine. This study aimed to objectively verify smoking and drinking behavior during pregnancy and to disclose self-misreporting through maternal hair analysis. A total of 153 women attending a university hospital in Barcelona (Spain) were selected and interviewed after delivery, on their smoking and drinking habits during pregnancy. A 9-cm hair strand was collected and analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the presence of nicotine (NIC) and ethyl glucuronide (EtG) as biomarkers of tobacco and alcohol consumption, respectively. Concentrations of EtG <7 pg/mg hair and ≥30 pg/mg hair in the 0-3-cm hair segment have been used to assess, respectively, total abstinence and chronic excessive consumption in the previous 3 months, with repetitive moderate drinking lying in the interval 7-30 pg EtG per mg hair. Hair NIC less than 1 ng/mg hair indicates non-exposure to tobacco smoke while hair NIC indicates daily active smoking. In the interview, 28.1% of women declared to have smoked occasionally during gestation, while only 2.6% stated to have consumed alcohol on more than one occasion during pregnancy. Hair testing of smoking biomarkers disclosed that 7.2% of women remained active smokers during the whole pregnancy (hair NIC: 3.21-56.98 ng/mg hair), 16.3% were passive non-smokers or occasional smokers (hair NIC: 1.04-2.99 ng/mg hair), while 76.5% were not exposed to any cigarette smoke (hair NIC < limit of quantification - 0.91 ng/mg hair). Conversely, alcohol hair biomarkers showed that only 35.3% of women were totally abstinent during gestation (hair EtG: 3.89-6.73 pg/mg hair), while 62.7% drank a non-negligible amount of alcohol during pregnancy (hair EtG: 7.06-26.57 pg/mg hair), and 2% were chronic excessive drinkers (hair EtG: 35.33-47.52 pg/mg hair). Maternal hair analysis has shown to be significantly more sensitive than interviews in revealing an alarming misreported prevalence of alcohol use during pregnancy. These findings stress the need to use objective measures to assess alcohol exposure and to consider the inclusion of targeted actions to reduce alcohol consumption in maternal-child health policies. Background Evidence on the short-term effects of ultrafine particles (with diameter < 100 nm, UFP) on health is still inconsistent. New particles in ambient urban air are the result of direct emissions and also the formation of secondary UFP from gaseous precursors. We segregated UFP into these two components and investigated their impact on daily mortality in three Spanish cities affected by different sources of air pollution. Methods We separated the UFP using a method based on the high correlation between black carbon (BC) and particle number concentration (N). The first component accounts for aerosol constituents emitted by vehicle exhaust (N1) and the second for the photochemical new particle formation enhancements (N2). We applied city-specific Poisson regression models, adjusting for long-term trends, temperature and population dynamics. Results Mean BC levels were higher in Barcelona and Tenerife (1.8 and 1.2 μg·m − 3 , respectively) than in Huelva (0.8 μg·m − 3 ). While mean UFP concentrations were similar in the three cities, from which N1 was 40% in Barcelona, 46% in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and 27% in Huelva. We observed an association with N1 and daily mortality in Barcelona, by increasing approximately 1.5% between lags 0 and 2, per an interquartile increase (IQR) of 3277 cm − 3 , but not with N2. A similar pattern was found in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, although none of the associations were significant. Conversely, in the industrial city of Huelva mortality was associated with N2 at lag 0, by increasing 3.9% per an IQR of 12,032·cm − 3 . Conclusion The pattern and origin of UFP determines their short-term effect on human health. BC is possibly the better parameter to evaluate the health effects of particulate vehicle exhaust emissions, although in areas influenced by domestic solid fuel combustion this should also be taken into account. Background: Dietary factors can affect telomere length (TL), a biomarker of aging, through oxidation and inflammation-related mechanisms. A Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) could help to understand the effect of the inflammatory potential of the diet on telomere shortening. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of the DII with TL and to examine whether diet-associated inflammation could modify the telomere attrition rate after a 5-y follow-up of a Mediterranean dietary intervention. Design: This was a prospective study of 520 participants at high cardiovascular disease risk (mean 6 SD age: 67.0 6 6.0 y, 45% males) from the PREDIMED-NAVARRA (PREvención con DIeta MEDiterráneaNAVARRA) trial. Leukocyte TL was measured by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction at baseline and after 5 y of follow-up. The DII was calculated from self-reported data by using a validated 137-item food-frequency questionnaire. Results: Longer telomeres at baseline were found in participants who had a more anti-inflammatory diet (lowest DII score) (P-trend = 0.012). Longitudinal analyses further showed that a greater anti-inflammatory potential of the diet (i.e., a decrease in the DII) could significantly slow down the rate of telomere shortening. Moreover, the multivariableadjusted OR for short telomeres (z score #20th percentile) was 1.80 (95% CI: 1.03, 3.17) in a comparison between the highest (proinflammatory) and the lowest (anti-inflammatory) DII tertiles. Similarly, a greater DII (greatest proinflammatory values) after a 5-y follow-up was associated with almost a 2-fold higher risk of accelerated telomere attrition compared with the highest decrease in DII (greatest antiinflammatory values) during this period (P-trend = 0.025). Conclusions: This study showed both cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the inflammatory potential of the diet and telomere shortening in subjects with a high cardiovascular disease risk. Our findings are consistent with, but do not show, a beneficial effect of adherence to an anti-inflammatory diet on aging and health by slowing down telomere shortening. These results suggest that diet might play a key role as a determinant of TL through proinflammatory or anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The taxonomic position of the bivalve pathogen PP-638 was studied together with five similar isolates. The strains were isolated from flat oyster ( Ostrea edulis ) and Manila clam ( Venerupis philippinarum ) cultures during outbreaks of disease in two shellfish hatcheries (Galicia, NW Spain). The pathogenicity, previously established for PP-638, was demonstrated with all isolates and for several bivalve species, including the original hosts. On the basis of phenotypic characterization and 16S rRNA gene sequences, a tight group was defined within the genus Vibrio . Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) based on concatenated sequences of the 16S rRNA gene and the five housekeeping genes rec A , rpo A, pyr H, gyr B and fts Z revealed that these strains form a cluster within the Orientalis clade, close to the species Vibrio tubiashii . The results of MLSA, the DDH rate and the phenotypic differences with the type strain of V. tubiashii supported the differentiation of the Galician isolates as a new subspecies within V. tubiashii , for which the name V. tubiashii subsp. europaensis subsp. nov. is proposed (type strain PP-638 T = CECT 8136 T = DSM 7349 T ) The emended description of V. tubiashii is included. The pathogenicity assays widen the host range of V. tubiashii to add two unreported species, Venerupis decussata and Donax trunculus , and the described as relatively resistant species V. philippinarum . Abstract: This study undertakes an overall assessment of pollution in a large region (over 2500 km of coastline) of the N-NW Spanish coast, by combining the use of biochemical (AChE, GST, GPx) and physiological (SFG) responses to pollution, with chemical analyses in wild mussel populations (Mytilus galloprovincialis). The application of chemical analysis and biological techniques identified polluted sites and quantified the level of toxicity. High levels of pollutants were found in mussel populations located close to major cities and industrialized areas and, in general, average concentrations were higher in the Cantabrian than in the Iberian Atlantic coast. AChE activities ranged between 5.8 and 27.1 nmol/min/mg prot, showing inhibition in 12 sampling sites, according to available ecotoxicological criteria. GST activities ranged between 29.5 and 112.7 nmol/min/mg prot, and extreme variability was observed in GPx, showing activities between 2.6 and 64.5 nmol/min/mg prot. Regarding SFG, only 5 sites showed ‘moderate stress’ (SFG value below 20 J/g/h), and most sites presented a ‘high potential growth’ (>35 J/g/h) corresponding to a ‘healthy state’. Multivariate statistical techniques applied to the chemical and biological data identified PCBs, organochlorine pesticides and BDEs as the main responsible of the observed toxicity. However, the alteration of biological responses caused by pollutants seems to be, in general, masked by biological variables, namely age and mussel condition, which have an effect on the mussels' response to pollutant exposure. Abstract: Four Vitis vinifera L. varieties (Mencía, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Merlot) were evaluated for viticultural characteristics in the vineyards of a winery located in the Bierzo Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) region of León in Spain. Must parameters (total soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity, total phenolic content, colour intensity and colour tonality), production parameters (mean berry weight, yield, number of clusters and mean cluster weight) and vigour parameters (shoot pruning weight, Ravaz index, number of shoots, mean weight of shoots, mean length of shoots, mean number of buds per shoot, mean length of internodes, and mean diameter of shoots) were measured during four seasons (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010). The grape samples were taken 3–5 days after harvest with similar degree brix levels. Must and production parameters differed significantly among varieties and seasons. Although total soluble solids and pH values differed significantly between varieties, the range for the two measurements was small. Mencía yielded the highest grape production while Tempranillo had the lowest, with differences due primarily to mean berry weight and mean cluster weight. Tempranillo and Cabernet had the highest vigour values. Ravaz index values were highest (>10) for Mencía and lowest (<4) for Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet. Mencía was the variety best suited to the growing area and the preferential variety for the wines made in the Bierzo PDO. Tempranillo adapted most poorly to the growing conditions. Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Medicinal plant complexes of different species sharing vernacular names, morphological and aromatic characteristics and uses are common in traditional medicine of different cultures. A quantitative methodology as a tool for ethnopharmacological studies is presented for systematically analyzing morphological and therapeutic features shared by several species integrating such complexes. Aim of the study: The aim of this paper is to apply a novel methodology to determine whether complexes are homogeneous and species within the complexes are completely interchangeable or not. Moreover, to find out if those species giving the name to the complex are also those which provide a large number of complex descriptors. For this purpose we study the complex of medicinal plant species which share the vernacular name “Árnica” in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, through the systematic recording of past and current local therapeutic uses and administration forms, plant-parts and localities where the different species are used. Being a newly introduced name in the region, “Árnica” offers an interesting field to study the genesis and dynamics of ethnopharmacological categories and medicinal plant complexes. Methods: A systematic review of the botanical, ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological literature from 1895 to 2010 and of databases was performed in order to obtain information on the use of plants locally named as “Árnica” or with binomials that include the word “Árnica”, in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Results: The “Árnica” complex includes 32 different plant species in the Iberian Peninsula, belonging to six families of Angiosperms, which partially share morphological characteristics and therapeutic properties. These are some of the most popular medicinal species of the Iberian Peninsula and are mainly used to treat inflammation, wounds, hematoma, and contusion. The vegetal materials are primarily macerated or decocted, and the methods of administration are plasters, washes, frictions or direct application of the plant. Conclusions: Medicinal plant complexes are frequent in ethnopharmacological contexts and require being clearly detected, and systematically studied. Plant species within each complex are only partly interchangeable because the sharing of characters, including medicinal uses, is low. “Árnica” medicinal plant complex is extremely dynamic in the Iberian Peninsula. In less than two hundred years up to 32 different plant species belonging to six different plant families became labeled “Árnica”. Medical staff was extremely influential in the adoption of “Árnica” as a vernacular name between 1785 and 1864 in Spain and Portugal but not in the repertory of uses adopted for the plants within the complex. In terms of total descriptors shared in the complex, Arnica montana L. is less relevant than other three species, belonging to the Inuleae Cass. tribe, of the Asteraceae (Chiliadenus glutinosus (L.) Fourr., Inula montana L. and Dittrichia viscosa (L.) Greuter). Thus “Árnica” complex is labeled by three different Inuleae Cass. species and receives the name from a fourth Madieae Jeps. species (Arnica montana L.). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: SFG and physiological rates were measured in wild mussels from the Spanish Marine Pollution monitoring program (SMP) in order to determine seawater quality. It consists of 41 stations, covering almost 2500km of coast, making the SMP the widest-ranging monitoring network in the Iberian Peninsula''s Atlantic region. Results of the 2007 and 2008 surveys when 39 sites were sampled: (20 in 2007 and 19 in 2008, being 8 sites sampled both years) were presented. Chemical analyses were carried out to determine the relationships between physiological rates and the accumulation of toxic compounds. Data presented are the first to become available on the use of SFG as a biomarker of the marine environment on a large spatial scale (>1000km) along Spain''s Atlantic seaboard. SFG values enable significant differences to be established between the areas sampled and between the two years surveyed. The integration of biological and chemical data suggests that certain organochlorine compounds, namely chlordanes and DDTs, may have a negative effect on SFG, although such an effect is of a lesser magnitude than that associated with certain biological parameters such as condition index and mussel age. These variables act as confounding factors when attempting to determine the effect of chemical compounds present in the marine environment on mussel SFG. Further research is therefore needed on the relation between these confounding factors and SFG in order to apply the relevant corrective strategies to enable this index to be used in monitoring programs. The effect of these confounding factors is more clearly revealed in studies that cover a wide-ranging spatial and time scale, such as those carried out within the SMP. These results do not invalidate the use of biological data in monitoring programs, but rather point to the need to analyze all the factors affecting each biological process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this study the effects of the main marine pollutants (metals, PAHs, PCBs and DDTs) were assessed in native mussels from the Mediterranean coast of Spain. For this purpose several biomarkers such as benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase (BPH), DT-diaphorase (DTD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidases (GPs), glutathione reductase (GR), metallothionein (MT) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were measured in the digestive gland. Results showed increased LPO levels in mussels which accumulated high loads of organic compounds and arsenic in their tissues. BPH levels correlated to the concentrations of organic compounds in mussel tissues, though the range of BPH response was low in relation to the high gradient of accumulation of organic pollutants. Increased BPH levels, concomitant to low DTD and GST activities, were detected in mussels which presented high levels of organic pollutants in their tissues. This suggests that signs of LPO present in these organisms are related to the imbalance between phase I and phase II biotransformation processes. Furthermore, the increased levels of MT and CAT detected in mussels which showed high levels of Cd in their tissues appear to reflect a coordinated response which protects against the toxicity of this metal. Abstract: A survey to determine the level of parasite resistance to benzimidazoles (BZ) under field conditions was performed on 107 commercial sheep farms located in the Aragon region of northeast Spain. Resistance was measured using the discriminant dose, a simplified form of the in vitro egg hatch assay (EHA). Taking into account the spatial structure of the data, a multivariate approach was applied to management and environmental variables as well as to their relationships with BZ resistance levels compiled from each flock. Results estimated that 11% of flocks had resistant parasite populations, although we suspected the presence of BZ-resistant parasite strains in 98% of the sample. Resistance levels were more similar among the nearest flocks, suggesting a contagious spatial distribution of resistance (i.e., resistance at neighbouring farms was not independent from one another). Management variables such as frequency of deworming, grazing in private pastures and underdosing were positively related to resistance levels, whereas only the use of BZ was negatively related to resistance levels, likely because BZ were replaced by other anthelmintics in flocks where reduced BZ efficacy was suspected. In addition to climatic conditions and seasonality, land use was an environmental variable associated with observed BZ resistance levels. Generally, resistance was highest in cooler and wetter areas but was lower in flocks sampled during January–March compared to flocks sampled in April–June or October–December. Variation partitioning procedures showed that the variation of resistance explained by the effect of environmental variables was higher than management variables. The effects of both variable groups, however, highly overlapped with the spatial structure of resistant levels, which suggests that a considerable amount of the effects attributable to both variable groups may be actually due to the spatial distribution of resistance. The resistance variation explained by the spatial component suggested that other uncontrolled factors acting at short spatial scale (e.g., common management and environmental variables; the importation of resistant strains and their posterior spread across neighbouring flocks; the selection history of the worms carried out by historical management events previous to this survey; and genetic, physiological or both types of parasite population variation) could yield this contagious spatial structure of BZ resistance. Although further research is needed, both seasonal variation and the dependence of resistance levels among neighbouring flocks should be taken into account in the design of future research or observational resistance programmes to minimise spatial and temporal pseudo-replication. Objective: Intestinal microbiota plays an important role in the prevention of certain diseases during the pediatric years. Thus, there is an increasing interest in the addition of probiotics to infant formulas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of a follow-on formula with Lactobacillus salivarius CECT5713 in 6-mo-old children. Methods: The antibiotic susceptibility of L. salivarius CECT5713 was analyzed by a dilution method. A double-blinded, randomized, placebo controlled study was performed. Children (n = 80) were distributed in two groups and consumed the formula supplemented or not with probiotics (2 × 106 colony-forming units [cfu]/g) during 6 mo. Fecal samples were collected at enrollment, at 3 mo, and at the end of trial. Clinical and anthropometric evaluations were performed. Depending on the variable, one-way or two-way repeated measures analysis of variance were used for the statistical analysis. Results: The antibiotic susceptibility profile of the strain resulted as safe. No adverse effects associated with the consumption of the probiotic formula were reported. In addition, clinical parameters did not differ between groups. Consumption of the probiotic supplemented formula led to an increase in the fecal lactobacilli content (7.6 ± 0.2 versus 7.9 ± 0.1 log cfu/g, P < 0.05). Lactobacillus salivarius CECT5713 was detected in the feces of volunteers from the probiotic group. Probiotic consumption induced a significant increase in the fecal concentration of butyric acid at 6 mo. Conclusion: Thus, a follow-on formula with L. salivarius CECT5713 is safe and well tolerated in 6-mo-old infants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Antioxidant response was used to assess the effects of the main pollutants in wild mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) along the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Antioxidant enzyme activities – those of catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidases, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and DT-diaphorase – as well as lipid peroxidation and metallothionein concentrations were measured in gills of mussels from 16 selected sites. Furthermore, concentrations of the main contaminants (Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, As, PAH, PCB, and DDT) were quantified in mussel tissue, and environmental parameters were measured in water samples collected at each site. Results showed that the glutathione-dependent antioxidant enzymes offered an increased and coordinated response against metal (Hg, Pb and Cd) contamination. These enzymatic activities correlated positively to temperature, suggesting the influence of this environmental parameter on antioxidant responses in gill tissues. Furthermore, although temperature did not reach stressful levels in the study area, it seemed to add a synergistic effect to that produced by metals to induce antioxidant enzymes in the most metal-polluted sites. Catalase activity appeared to be involved in a different antioxidant pathway, more related to organic pollutant bioaccumulation, offering an efficient protection mechanism against reactive oxygen species generation due both to organic exposure and high physiological activity, reflected by high condition indices. In general terms, increased levels of antioxidant enzymes at some sites suffering from metal and organic pollution indicated a situation of oxidative stress that nevertheless did not appear to be harmful, since lipid peroxidation levels showed no peroxidative damage in gill tissues of mussels collected from even the most heavily polluted sites. On the other hand, metallothionein and DT-diaphorase did not reflect pollutant exposure and seemed to be more influenced by environmental variables than by the pollutants. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Element load, conventional biomarkers and altered protein expression profiles were studied in Carcinus maenas crabs, to assess contamination of “Domingo Rubio” stream, an aquatic ecosystem that receives pyritic metals, industrial contaminants, and pesticides. Lower antioxidative activities – glucose-6-phosphate and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenases, catalase – were found in parallel to higher levels of damaged biomolecules – malondialdehyde, oxidized glutathione –, due to oxidative lesions promoted by contaminants, as the increased levels of essential – Zn, Cu, Co – and nonessential – Cr, Ni, Cd – elements. Utility of Proteomics to assess environmental quality was confirmed, especially after considering the six proteins identified by de novo sequencing through capLC-μESI-ITMS/MS and homology search on databases. They include tripartite motif-containing protein 11 and ATF7 transcription factor (upregulated), plus CBR-NHR-218 nuclear hormone receptor, two components of the ABC transporters and aldehyde dehydrogenase (downregulated). These proteins could be used as novel potential biomarkers of the deleterious effects of pollutants present in the area. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: To address the lack of physiological approaches in current models assessing the potential distribution of the Argentine ant, we used data on brood development from distinct sources to evaluate a series of degree-day models for Catalonia (NE Iberian Peninsula), and data on the brood survival and oviposition rates to develop a worker production model. The degree-day model generated using data from Newell and Barber (1913) and Benois (1973) indicated that the number of degree-days required for the complete development from egg to adult worker was 445.4 degree-days above a threshold of 15.9 °C, while the model calibrated using data from Abril et al. (2008, in press) suggested 599.5 degree-days above 18.4 °C. Comparisons between the degree-day model predictions and the currently known distribution of the Argentine ant suggested that the one generated using data from Newell and Barber (1913) and Benois (1973) overestimated the presence of the species, while the one calibrated using data from Abril et al. (2008; in press) underestimated it. On the other hand, the predicted daily net production of Argentine ant workers generated by the worker production model predicted more accurately the distribution of the Argentine ant than the degree-day models. Our results show the utility of incorporating physiological data in models to assess the distribution limits of the Argentine ant, which up to date have taken little account of the physiological needs of the species in terms of its establishment and dispersion in its introduced ranges. Abstract: Caged, transplanted, intermoult, female shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) were exposed to sediments from the Port of Cadiz (SW, Spain); the Port of Huelva (SW, Spain), the Port of Pasajes (NE, Spain) and the Port of Bilbao (NW, Spain) for a period of 28days. Organisms were sampled on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 allowing examination of different biomarkers to exposure to metals and organic compounds; metallothioneins (MTs), ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Sediment samples were also analyzed to determine chemical concentration of metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn), PAHs and PCBs. Metals such as As, Cu and Zn associated with mining activities (Port of Huelva), and contaminants such as Ni, Pb, Hg and PCBs, associated with oil spills and industrial activities (Ports of Cadiz, Pasajes and Bilbao), were found to interfere in detoxification and/or anti-stress oxidative defenses in C. maenas. Positive, significant (p <0.05) induction of MTs concentration was associated with increasing sediment As, Cu, Zn and Hg concentrations. EROD activity was associated with PCBs, GST activity with Hg and GPX activity with As, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. The use of the parameter AR, which involves the kinetic patterns of the battery of biomarkers tested, was found to be a powerful and sensitive tool for evaluating the bioavailability and adverse effects of contaminants bound to sediments, enabling polluted and nonpolluted sites to be easily distinguished. The Pb mining area of the valley of Alcudia and the Sierra Madrona mountains (S. Spain) has been exploited intermittently for over 2100 years, since Roman occupation and up until the late 1900s. Red deer (n =168) and wild boar (n =58) liver and bone (metacarpus) were analyzed for Pb, Zn, Cu, Cd, As and Se. Lipid peroxidation, total and oxidized glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), GSH peroxidase (GPX) and fatty acid composition were studied in liver of red deer. The concentrations of Pb in liver and bone of red deer and wild boar were higher in the mining area than in the control area, and higher in the wild boar than red deer, but well below the level associated with clinical signs of Pb poisoning. Liver levels of Cu, Cd and Se were also higher in red deer from the mining area. Red deer from the mining area had 39% less total GSH than in the control area. The percentage of docosahexaenoic acid in liver of red deer from the mining area was 16% lower than in the control area. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Almaraz nuclear power plant (Spain) uses the water of Arrocampo reservoir for cooling, and consequently raises the radioactive levels of the aquatic ecosystem of this reservoir. From July 2002 to June 2005, monthly samples of surface water, bulrushes (Typha latifolia) and carp (Cyprinus carpio) were collected from this reservoir. They were analyzed to determine the temporal evolution of the levels of 3H in surface water and of its transfer from the surface water to free-water in the tissues (TFWT) of the aforementioned two organisms. The tritium levels in the surface water oscillate with a biannual period, with their values in the study period ranging between 53 and 433Bq/L. The incorporation of tritium to bulrushes and carp was fairly similar, the respective mean concentration factors being 0.74 and 0.8 (unitless, as Bq/L tissue water per Bq/L reservoir water). The temporal evolution of the levels fairly closely followed that observed for the surface water tritium, although detailed analysis showed the dominant periodicity for the bulrushes to be annual. This difference reflects the influence on the incorporation of tritium to bulrushes of diverse environmental and metabolic factors, especially evapotranspiration and the seasonal growth of this plant. Abstract: To evaluate the effect of Spanish summer commercial journeys on the stress response of young bulls born and reared under extensive conditions, 2 replicates of a transport from an assembly centre to a growing-finishing farm were studied. Journeys lasted 27 h, involving a total of 62 young bulls. Variables under study included haematocrit, red blood cell count (RBC), total white blood cell count (WBC), differential WBC counts, serum haptoglobin (Hp), cortisol, glucose, creatine phosphokinase (CPK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), total protein, and albumin at loading, at the end of an intermediate market stop, and at the unloading. Before the beginning of the journey elevated WBC and neutrophil counts, and high Hp values were detected, reflecting high stress levels probably as a consequence of previous procedures associated with the grouping at the assembly centre. Some stress was also detected at the end of the market stop, with cortisol increasing from 6.5 to 12.6±2.0 ng/mL (P <0.001), although a change in Hp concentration was not observed. Neither CPK and LDH activities, related to muscular tissue damage, nor haematocrit and RBC count, related to dehydration revealed a significant effect of this first stage of the journey on the physical stress of the young bulls. Subsequent 13 h transport to the growing-finishing farm induced an increase in Hp levels from 0.48 to 0.78±0.16 mg/mL (P <0.001), reflecting an onset of the acute stress response, although cortisol levels immediately after the unloading were similar to those found before loading at the market, suggesting that calves got accustomed to transport. At the end of the journey some dehydration and physical stress were also detected. Overall, our study provides new information to the discussion of the effect of temperatures during cattle transport. Although an improvement in pre-transport conditions is essential if the welfare of assembled and transported cattle is to be improved, the stress-related alteration of cattle physiology under Spanish summer commercial transport conditions is similar to that observed under colder conditions. Four 2–3m sediment cores were taken at the sites on the periphery of mussel raft concentrations in the subtidal zone of the inner Ría de Vigo (Galicia, NW Spain) with a view to evaluate the potential risk to mariculture from sediment-borne trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn). The distribution of each of these elements in reactive, organic, pyrite and silicate-bound fractions was determined at 64 samples, and these data were used to calculate the degree of trace metal pyritization (DTMP) of each metal/metalloid. In the top 10–20cm, relatively oxic conditions led to As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn having large reactive fractions due to their association with Fe and Mn oxyhydroxides. At lower levels, anoxic conditions favoured by intense diagenesis led to the precipitation of trace metals and metalloids as sulphides, with or without association with pyrite. Particularly large pyrite fractions in the 20–100cm layer are attributed to the organic matter of this layer being more marine in origin than that of deeper sediments. DTMP was greatest for Cu and As, and least for Pb, Zn and Cr. The risk of trace element toxicity in the event of disturbances instituting oxic conditions in these sediments is discussed. Abstract: [1.] Field body temperatures (T b''s) of Chamaeleo chamaeleon in southwestern Spain averaged 28°C in October and 30°C in June. Slopes of regressions of T b on T a (ambient temperature at perch height) indicated that individuals were able to maintain a preferred body temperature of about 30°C in June but not in October. [2.] Review of data from the literature indicated that chameleons in general have field body temperatures and selected body temperatures (means 30 and 31°C, respectively) that are low relative to those of most other diurnal lizards. Birth weight plays a central role in lamb survival and growth, and the knowledge of its genetic determinism has become essential in worldwide selection programmes. Within this context, within-litter birth weight variation (BWV) has been suggested as an attractive trait to homogenise litters in prolific species, although it has not been analysed in sheep. The objective of this study was to ascertain whether maternal additive genetic variance exists for BWV in Ripollesa ewes, and to study its genetic, permanent environmental and residual relationships with litter weight (LW) and litter size (LS) at birth. Data were recorded in the Ripollesa experimental flock of the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona, between 1986 and 2005, and included 1 662 litters from 380 ewes, with 712 records of BWV and 1 530 records of LW. Traits were analysed with a multivariate animal model solved through Bayesian methodologies, and with a threshold characterisation of LS. Additionally, the effect of BWV on lamb survival was studied. Additive genetic variance was observed for BWV (h2 = 0.061), as well as for LW (h2 = 0.200) and LS (h2 = 0.141). Nevertheless, genetic correlations among those traits were not substantial (BWV and LW = 0.151; BWV and LS = − 0.219; LW and LS = − 0.320) and suffered from a high degree of uncertainly, with the null correlation included within the highest posterior interval at 95%. Within-litter birth weight variation and LS showed a negative and large permanent environmental correlation ( − 0.872), and LW and LS were negatively correlated due to residual ( − 0.762) and permanent environmental ( − 0.449) random sources of variation. Within-litter birth weight variation influenced lamb mortality during the first 7 days of life (P 0.05). The low heritability found indicates that slow genetic progress may be expected from selecting for BWV. Close to zero genetic correlations suggest that this selection will probably not affect LS and LW, although some significant permanent and residual correlations must be taken into account. Protein deposition in Iberian pigs is low and the reasons for this are unknown. We investigated differences in protein synthesis rate in tissues of 30 Iberian and Landrace gilts fed 2 diets with adequate amino acid composition containing 160 or 120 g crude protein (CP)/kg, or a lysine-deficient diet (containing 120 or 160 g CP/kg for Iberian and Landrace pigs, respectively). Pigs were infused with a flooding dose of phenylalanine (15% as [(2)H(5)]-phenylalanine). Blood samples were taken from 12 to 40 min after the start of infusion, and samples from longissimus dorsi (ld), biceps femoris (bf), and semimembranosus (sm) muscles, liver, and duodenum were taken after slaughter. Body weights (BW) were 22.9 +/- 0.37 and 27.1 +/- 0.64 kg for Iberian and Landrace pigs, respectively. Iberian pigs fed the adequate diets had higher muscle fractional protein synthesis rates (FSR, %/d) than Landrace pigs. The FSR were 7.9 +/- 0.34 vs. 6.3 +/- 0.29%/d; 8.3 +/- 0.36 vs. 6.3 +/- 0.21%/d, and 7.7 +/- 0.23 vs. 6.4 +/- 0.36%/d for ld, bf, and sm muscles in Iberian and Landrace breeds, respectively (P < 0.01). However, muscles were between 20 and 32% smaller in the Iberian pigs (P < 0.01). Dietary protein level did not affect muscle FSR or size in either breed. Lysine deficiency reduced muscle FSR (46-49%, P < 0.001). Visceral tissues had greater relative weights in Iberian pigs (P < 0.001) with no breed differences in FSR. Yearling meat goat doelings, 25 Boer×Spanish (BS) and 25 Spanish (S) (27 and 21 kg initial BW, respectively; S.E.=0.6), were used in a 16-week experiment (four 28-day periods) to determine effects on growth of length of nutrient restriction and level of concentrate supplementation during realimentation. Doelings consumed prairie hay (6.2% CP, 70% NDF and 9.1% ADL) ad libitum and received daily supplementation with 0.75% BW of concentrate (30% CP; C treatment), sequential 28-day periods of no supplementation and daily supplementation with 1.50 or 0.75% of concentrate (H-28 and L-28, respectively) or 56 days without supplementation followed by supplementation for 56 days with 1.50 or 0.75% of concentrate (H-56 and L-56, respectively). Ruminal ammonia N concentration was below 6 mg/dl when concentrate was not supplemented. ADG was similar among dietary treatments and between genotypes in period 1. Dietary treatment and genotype interacted (P<0.05) in ADG during periods 2 and 3. In period 2, ADG was generally lowest among treatments for 56-day restriction treatments, with the difference being greater for BS vs. S (24, 34, 41, −63 and −96 g for BS, and 6, 13, −5, −40 and −36 g for S, with C, H-28, L-28, H-56 and L-56, respectively; S.E.=16.0). In period 3, ADG was similar among dietary treatments for S but was lower with 28- vs. 56-day restriction treatments for BS (85, −9, 0, 123 and 112 g for BS, and 26, 32, 34, 64 and 68 g for S, with C, H-28, L-28, H-56 and L-56, respectively; S.E.=17.3). In period 4, ADG was lower (P<0.05) for C vs. H-56 and L-56 (39, 53, 71, 87 and 85 g with C, H-28, L-28, H-56 and L-56, respectively). Overall ADG in periods 1–4 (dietary treatment×genotype interaction; P<0.05) was similar among dietary treatments for S but was greater (P<0.05) for C than for H-28, L-28 and L-56 (57, 28, 26, 46 and 22 g for BS, and 18, 24, 29, 35 and 29 g for S, with C, H-28, L-28, H-56 and L-56, respectively; S.E.=7.3). In conclusion, maintaining an adequate plane of nutrition for steady growth and development appears more important for BS than for S yearling doelings, with the former possibly requiring longer periods of realimentation than previous nutrient restriction. Cataract is an important visual problem of older people and a substantial health care cost in many countries. Most studies investigating risk factors for cataract have been conducted in the United States, and there is less information on the possible role of dietary factors in European populations. We conducted a case-control study to investigate the association of antioxidant vitamins (vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, zeaxanthin and lutein) and minerals (zinc and selenium) and risk of cataract in a Mediterranean population. Cases with cataract (343) and 334 age/sex frequency-matched controls aged 55 to 74 y were selected from an ophthalmic outreach clinic in Valencia, Spain. Participants were interviewed about their diet using a Food Frequency Questionnaire, and other information on potential confounders, such as smoking, alcohol, and education. Blood samples were analyzed by a colorimetric method for vitamin C and by reversed-phase HLPC for other blood antioxidants. Blood levels of vitamin C above 49 micromol/L were associated with a 64% reduced odds for cataract (P < 0.0001). Dietary intake of vitamins C, E and selenium were marginally associated with decreased odds (P = 0.09, P = 0.09, P = 0.07, respectively), whereas moderately high levels of blood lycopene (>0.30 micromol/L) were associated with a 46% increased odds of cataract (P = 0.04). Our results strengthen the evidence for a protective role for vitamin C on the aging lens as this effect was seen in a population characterized by high vitamin C intakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To describe the events associated with the blastocyst formation and implantation that occur in embryos during preimplantation development based on the largest sample size ever described with time-lapse monitoring.Design: Observational, retrospective, single-center clinical study.Setting: University-affiliated private IVF center.Patient(s): A total of 7,483 zygotes from 990 first treatments of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI; 627 of oocyte donor vs. 363 autologous oocyte cycles), of which 832 blastocysts were transferred.Intervention(s): No patient intervention. Embryos were cultured in a time-lapse monitoring system, and the embryos were transferred on day 5 after ICSI. Embryo selection was based on the multivariable model previously developed and on blastocyst morphology.Main Outcome Measure(s): Using a time-lapse system, embryo images were acquired every 15 minutes for 120 hours. Embryos cleavage time points up to the 9-cell stage (t2-t9) as well as to the morula stage (tM) and blastocyst formation (tB) were registered in hours after ICSI. Additionally, duration of the cell cycle and synchrony of the second and third cell cycles were defined. As a result, we have monitored the embryonic development of a total of 3,215 blastocysts, of which 832 were transferred. Finally, we analyzed the characteristics of embryonic development of blastocyst (phase 1) and of implanted and not implanted (phase 2) embryos as finally validated in an independent data set (phase 3).Result(s): A detailed retrospective analysis of cleavage times was made for 7,483 zygotes. We analyzed 17 parameters and found several significantly correlated with subsequent blastocyst formation and implantation. The most predictive parameters for blastocyst formation were time of morula formation, tM (81.28-96.0 hours after ICSI), and t8-t5 (≤8.78 hours) or time of transition of 5-blastomere embryos to 8-blastomere embryos with a receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) value = 0.849 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.835-0.854; phase 1). These parameters were less predictive of implantation, with a ROC value = 0.546 (95% CI, 0.507-0.585). We also observed that time for expansion blastocyst, tEB (107.9-112.9 hours after ICSI), and t8-t5 (≤5.67 hours after ICSI) predict blastocyst implantation, with a ROC value = 0.591 (95% CI, 0.552-0.630; phase 2). The model was validated on an independent data set and gave a ROC of 0.596 (0.526-0.666; phase 3).Conclusion(s): The inclusion of kinetic parameters into score evaluation may improve blastocyst selection criteria and can predict blastocyst formation with high accuracy. We propose two multivariable models based on our findings to classify embryos according to their probabilities of blastocyst stage and implantation in the largest data set ever reported of human blastocysts.
