The main objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters for milk urea nitrogen (MUN) in Holstein cattle and to conduct a single-step (ss)GWAS to identify candidate genes associated with MUN. Phenotypic measurements from 24,435 Holstein cows were collected from March 2013 to July 2019 in 9 dairy farms located in the Beijing area, China. A total of 2,029 cows were genotyped using the Illumina 150K Bovine Bead Chip, containing 121,188 SNP. A single-trait repeatability model was used to evaluate the genetic background of MUN. We found that MUN is a trait with low heritability (0.06 ± 0.004) and repeatability (0.12). Considering similar milk production levels, a lower MUN concentration indicates higher nitrogen digestibility. The genetic correlations between MUN and milk yield, net energy concentration, fat percentage, protein percentage, and lactose percentage were positive and ranged from 0.02 to 0.26. The genetic correlation between MUN and somatic cell score (SCS) was negative (−0.18), indicating that animals with higher MUN levels tend to have lower SCS. Both ssGWAS and pathway enrichment analyses were used to explore the genetic mechanisms underlying MUN. A total of 18 SNP (located on BTA11, BTA12, BTA14, BTA17, and BTA18) were found to be significantly associated with MUN. The genes CFAP77 , CAMSAP1 , CACNA1B , ADGRB1 , FARP1 , and INTU are considered to be candidate genes for MUN. These candidate genes are associated with important biological processes such as protein and lipid metabolism and binding to specific proteins. This set of candidate genes, metabolic pathways, and their functions provide a better understanding of the genomic architecture and physiological mechanisms underlying MUN in Holstein cattle. Drought-associated tree mortality and forest decline have been increasingly observed across the globe due to warmer and drier climates, particularly in drought-prone environments. Understanding how forests respond to the increasing inter-annual climate variability and frequent severe drought events in the context of global change is of great significance for predicting the dynamics of forest ecosystems under future warming-drying climate scenarios. This study combined tree-ring series, xylem anatomy, wood isotope signatures, and remote sensing methods to examine the physiological mechanisms underlying the response of natural H. davidii forests in Horqin Sandy Land, a water-limited area in northern China, to the identified severe drought events and long-term climatic variability. Our results indicated that the climatic variables related to environmental moisture conditions exert the most profound influence on the performance of the studied species, with severe drought events significantly reducing growth vigor. The concurrent reduction in water-transporting conductivity and increase in water-use efficiency signified the prevalence of a more conservative water-use strategy in response to severe droughts at the holistic level of the whole tree, which physiologically accounts for the increased hydraulic safety and diminished radial growth during the period. Remotely sensed vegetation indices appeared to respond less conspicuously to severe drought events compared to radial growth, xylem anatomical traits, and water use efficiency. Nonetheless, a coordinated response to climatic variability between tree canopy and individual-level performance was found over the long-term time series, implying that a multiscale approach enhances our comprehension of the long-term forest responses to climatic variability. In short, this study highlights the role of water-related physiology in modulating the performance of H. davidii trees during severe droughts by adjusting xylem hydraulic functioning and tree water use efficiency. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a dominant pathological type in China. NUPR1 is a complex molecule implicated in various physiological and biological functions whose expression is upregulated in response to stress. Furthermore, autophagy is a vital physiological mechanism in the onset and metastasis of malignancies. This study aims to uncover the influence of NUPR1 on ESCC occurrence and development by regulating autophagy while also exploring its association with the MAPK signaling pathway. First, the differences in NUPR1 between ESCC and normal tissues were analyzed through online databases. Subsequently, the pathological tissues of clinical samples were stained and scored using immunohistochemistry. And NUPR1 expression in ESCC cells was investigated, as was the function of NUPR1 in the modulation of ESCC's malignant behavior. Furthermore, a nude mouse ESCC xenograft model was developed. Finally, RNA sequencing was performed on NUPR1-downregulated ESCC cells, which was verified using WB. Our findings initially uncovered differences in the expression of NUPR1 in ESCC and normal tissues. In vitro experiments demonstrated that NUPR1 downregulation significantly inhibited ESCC cell proliferation, invasion, and migration, as well as promoted their apoptosis. Our xenograft model exhibited significant inhibition of ESCC tumors upon NUPR1 downregulation. Subsequently, RNA sequencing uncovered that NUPR1 regulates its malignant biological behavior through MAPK-mTOR signaling pathway. Finally, we found that NUPR1 downregulation can inhibit autophagic flux in ESCC. Nitrogen (N 2)-fixing legumes can be used for phytoremediation of toxic heavy metal Mercury (Hg) contaminated soil, but N 2 -fixation highly relies on phosphorus (P) availability for nodule formation and functioning. Here, we characterized the significance of P deficiency for Hg accumulation and toxicity in woody legume plants. Consequences for foliar and root traits of rhizobia inoculation, Hg exposure (+Hg) and low P (-P) supply, individually and in combination were characterized at both the metabolite and transcriptome levels in seedlings of two Robinia pseudoacacia L. provenances originating from contrasting climate and soil backgrounds, i.e., GS in northwest and the DB in northeast China. Our results reveal that depleted P mitigates the toxicity of Hg at the transcriptional level. In leaves of Robinia depleted P reduced oxidative stress and improved the utilization strategy of C, N and P nutrition; in roots depleted P regulated the expression of genes scavenging oxidative stress and promoting cell membrane synthesis. Rhizobia inoculation significantly improved the performance of both Robinia provenances under individual and combined +Hg and -P by promoting photosynthesis, increasing foliar N and P content and reducing H 2 O 2 and MDA accumulation despite enhanced Hg uptake. DB plants developed more nodules, had higher biomass and accumulated higher Hg amounts than GS plants and thus are suggested as the high potential Robinia provenance for future phytoremediation of Hg contaminated soils with P deficiency. Soil pollution and nutrient depletion constitute serious threats for human and environmental health. However, information on the responses of plants to combined Hg pollution and P depletion has so far not been reported, at both, the metabolite and transcriptome levels. In the present study, we characterized the interaction of Hg exposure with P depletion in Robinia -rhizobia associations of two Robinia provenances originating from different environments at the metabolic and transcriptional levels. Provenance-specific differences in Robinia performance upon rhizobia inoculation at Hg and low P exposure were identified. From these results we recommend one of the two Robinia provenances for future remediation of Hg contaminated soils with low P content. The economically adaptable mulberry (Morus alba L.) has a long history of grafting in China, yet the physiological mechanisms and advantages in drought tolerance remain unexplored. In our study, we investigated the responses of self-rooted 2X (diploid), 3X (triploid), and 4X (tetraploid) plants, as well as polyploid plants grafted onto diploid seedling rootstocks (2X/2X, 3X/2X, and 4X/2X) under drought stress. We found that self-rooted diploid plants exhibited the most severe phenotypic damage, lowest water retention, photosynthetic capacity, and the least effective osmotic stress adjustment compared to tetraploid and triploid plants. However, grafted diploid and triploid plants showed effective mitigation of drought-induced damage, with higher relative water content and improved soil water retention. Grafted plants also improved the photosystem response to drought stress through elevated photosynthetic potential, closed stomatal aperture, and faster recovery of chlorophyll biosynthesis in the leaves. Additionally, grafted plants altered osmotic protective compound levels, including starch, soluble sugar, and proline content, thereby enhancing drought resistance. Absolute quantification PCR indicated that the expression levels of proline synthesis-related genes in grafted plants were not influenced after drought stress, whereas they were significantly increased in self-rooted plants. Consequently, our findings support that self-rooted triploid and tetraploid mulberries exhibited superior drought resistance compared to diploid plants. Moreover, grafting onto seedling rootstocks enhanced tolerance against drought stress in diploid and triploid mulberry, but not in tetraploid. • The growth rate of young trees did not change over the whole period 1951–2018. • Mature trees significantly increased the growth rate from 1985 to 2018. • Mature trees are more sensitive to rising CO 2 than young trees. • Mature and young trees have different water use strategies in a warming world. The effects of tree age-related intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) under climate change such as warming and rising atmospheric CO 2 concentrations (C a) on tree growth are still poorly understood. We measured tree-ring δ13C, δ18O, tree-ring width, and their relationships with climate variables, calculated iWUE for relatively young (90 ± 5 yr) and mature (230 ± 40 yr) Larix dahurica trees in a boreal permafrost region in northeastern China. The period of tree-ring measurements covering 70 years includes a pre-warming period (1951–1984; base period) and a warm period (1985–2018; warm period). The growth rate of both mature and young trees did not change with time over the base period, while the mature trees but not the young ones significantly increased the growth rate with time over the warm period. The iWUE of mature trees consistently increased from 1951 to 2018, whereas that of the young trees increased only with time during the warm period from 1985 to 2018. The tree-ring δ13C and δ18O were not correlated for both young and mature trees over both base and warm periods, except for a significantly positive correlation between tree-ring δ13C and δ18O for mature trees during the warm period. We found that mature trees were more sensitive to C a than young trees. Our results suggest that mature trees have a more 'conservative' (low stomatal conductance (g s), constant assimilation rate (A)) water use strategy than young trees (constant g s , high A) in the permafrost regions in a warming world. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is widely present in marine animals. However, the characteristics of TMAO content in different classes of marine animals are insufficiently understood. In this study, the TMAO content in 79 marine animals (48 species, 7 classes) collected in the coastal and offshore areas of China during year 2019–2022 was analysed. The results showed that the TMAO content of the total samples varied from 0 to 139.19 mmol kg−1. The TMAO content in the classes Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Polychaeta and Holothuroidea varied from 0.06 ± 0.09 to 0.38 ± 0.63 mmol kg−1, but it varied from 30.20 ± 24.20 to 75.90 ± 38.59 mmol kg−1 in the classes Crustacea, Cephalopoda, and Osteichthyes. The TMAO content in the latter 3 classes was 2–3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the former 4 classes. • Autotetraploidization enhanced the salt tolerance of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. var. spinosa. • Salinity stress induced differential expression of many value genes and pathways between the diploid and autotetraploid. • More diverse transcription factors and complex protein-protein interaction networks may enhance salt tolerance of the autotetraploid. • More up-regulated genes and greater fold change related to osmotic adjustment exhibited in the autotetraploid than that in diploid. Chinese jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.), native to China, is an important deciduous fruit tree. This species is mainly propagated by grafting, with Z. jujuba var. spinosa widely used as the rootstock because of its resistance to adverse conditions such as saline environments. In a previous study, we found that autotetraploid jujube is phenotypically superior to the corresponding diploid, furthermore, the differences in salt tolerance between the two plant materials and the underlying molecular mechanism were still unclear. To clarify this issue, we investigated the leaf and shoot morphology and physiology of diploid and autotetraploid plants treated with NaCl for 0, 2, 6, 10, and 14 days. We also carried out transcriptome profiling after 0, 1, and 2 days of salinity treatment. Comparisons of diploid and autotetraploid plants under salinity conditions in morphology and eight physiological traits indicating that the autotetraploid has superior salt tolerance. Many differentially expressed genes related to salt stress response in diploid and autotetraploid Z. jujuba were assigned to functional categories such as detoxification, stimulus response, catalytic enzyme activity, antioxidant enzyme activity, glutathione metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, flavonoid biosynthesis, peroxisome, plant hormone signaling, and ABC transport. These genes constituted a complex regulatory network for maintaining osmosis and intracellular ion homeostasis and resisting oxidative stress. In addition, several genes encoding MYB, AP2/ERF-ERF, WRKY, GRAS, and C2H2 as well as hub proteins, including aquaporins, heat stress transcription factors, chaperone, cytochrome P450, and kinases, were differentially expressed under salt stress. The number, function, and fold changes of these genes differentially expressed under salinity treatment differed between the diploid and its autotetraploid, with more active, diverse strategies taking place in the autotetraploid to adapt to long-term salt stress. Finally, we found that there were more up-regulated DEGs and greater fold change related to osmotic adjustment in autotetraploid than in diploid which could further explain the enhanced salt stress tolerance in the autotetraploid. Our findings contribute to an understanding of the genetic basis of salt tolerance in autotetraploid jujube, which can guide future tolerance breeding of jujube cultivars and their rootstocks. Antimony (Sb) exposure threatens human health. To identify human biomarkers for Sb exposure, we analyzed 480 environmental samples from an active Sb mining area in Hunan, China. Elevated Sb concentrations exceeding the reference level were detected in drinking water (70% of n  = 83 total samples), foods (80%, n  = 188), urine (95%, n  = 63), saliva (44%, n  = 48), hair (80%, n  = 51) and nails (83%, n  = 47). Drinking water contributed 85%–100% of the average daily dose (ADD) of Sb, and the total ADD (11.7 μg/kg bodyweight/day) was up to thirty times higher than the oral reference dose (0.4 μg/kg bodyweight/day) as recommended by USEPA. A positive correlation was found between ADD and Sb content in hair ( p  = 0.02), but not in urine ( p  = 0.051), saliva ( p  = 0.52) or nails ( p  = 0.85), suggesting that hair is the best non-invasive biomarker. Micro X-ray fluorescence analysis indicated that Sb is distributed in discrete spots in hair and nails, and Sb distribution is correlated with other metals. Methylated Sb species were predominant in urine (46%–100%) and saliva (74%–100%) in collected samples, implying that the human metabolic system adopts methylation as an effective pathway to detoxify and excrete Sb. Background: Cross-sectional studies suggest that coffee drinking is associated with better renal function. However, to our knowledge, no prospective study has examined its relation with the risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD).Objective: We examined the relations between coffee, tea, soda, and total caffeine consumption and the risk of ESRD among middle-aged and older Chinese in Singapore.Methods: We used data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study, a prospective cohort of 63,257 men and women aged 45-74 y at recruitment from 1993 to 1998. Baseline information on the consumption of caffeinated coffee and other caffeinated beverages (tea and sodas), habitual diet, medical history, and lifestyle factors was obtained via in-person interviews. The standard serving size of 1 cup was assigned as 237 mL in the questionnaire. Incident ESRD cases were identified via linkage with the nationwide registry. We used multivariable Cox regression models to estimate HRs and 95% CIs of ESRD risk associated with the consumption of caffeinated beverages, with adjustment for potential confounders.Results: After a mean follow-up of 16.8 y, 1143 cohort subjects developed ESRD. Compared with those who drank coffee less than daily, the HR (95% CI) was 0.91 (0.79, 1.05) for those who drank 1 cup of coffee/d and 0.82 (0.71, 0.96) for those who drank ≥2 cups/d (P-trend = 0.012). When stratified by sex, this association was observed in men but not in women. Compared with those who drank less than daily, the HR (95% CI) for drinking ≥2 cups/d was 0.71 (0.57, 0.87) among men and 0.97 (0.78, 1.19) among women (P-interaction = 0.03). Conversely, intakes of tea, soda, or total caffeine were not associated with the risk of ESRD in multivariable models.Conclusion: The consumption of ≥2 cups of coffee/d may reduce the risk of ESRD in the general population, especially among men. Background: Recent studies suggest that ambient air pollution exposure during pregnancy is associated with stillbirth occurrence. However, the results on the associations between ambient air pollutants and stillbirths are inconsistent and little is known about the gestational timing of sensitive periods for the effects of ambient air pollutants exposure on stillbirth.Objective: This study aimed to examine whether exposure to high levels of ambient air pollutants in a Chinese population is associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, and determine the gestational period when the fetus is most susceptible.Methods: We conducted a population-based cohort study in Wuhan, China, involving 95,354 births between June 10, 2011 and June 9, 2013. The exposure assessments were based on the daily mean concentrations of air pollutants obtained from the exposure monitor nearest to the pregnant women's residence. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the associations between stillbirths and exposure to each of the air pollutants at different pregnancy periods with adjustment for confounding factors.Results: Stillbirth increased with a 10 μg/m3 increase in particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) in each stage of pregnancy, and a significant association between carbon monoxide (CO) exposure and stillbirth was found during the third trimester (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.01, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00-1.01) and in the entire pregnancy (aOR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.04-1.34). Furthermore, an increased risk of stillbirth in the third trimester was associated with a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM10 (aOR: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.04-1.11), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) (aOR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.07-1.21) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) (aOR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.16-1.35). However, no positive association was observed between ozone exposure and stillbirth. In the two-pollutant models, PM2.5 and CO exposures were found to be consistently associated with stillbirth.Conclusions: Our study revealed that exposure to high levels of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2 and CO increases the risk of stillbirth and the most susceptible gestational period to ambient air pollution exposure was in the third trimester. Background: Existing studies exploring the association between low birth weight (LBW) and maternal fine particulate matter (aerodynamic diameter<2.5μm, PM2.5) exposure have presented equivocal results, and one of the possible reasons for this finding might be due to relatively low maternal exposures. In addition, relatively narrow maternal exposure windows to PM2.5 have not been well established for LBW.Methods: We employed a nested matched case-control design among 43,855 term births in a large maternity and child care hospital in Jinan, China. A total of 369 cases were identified, and four controls per case matched by maternal age were randomly selected among those with normal birth weight (n=1,476) from 2014 to 2016. Ambient air monitoring data on continuous measures of PM2.5, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) (24-h average concentrations) from 2013 to 2016 were collected from thirteen local monitoring stations. An inverse distance weighting method based on both home and work addresses was adopted to estimate the individual daily exposures to these air pollutants during pregnancy by weighting the average of the twelve nearest monitoring stations within 30km of each 100m×100m grid cell by an inverse squared distance, and then the average exposure concentrations for gestational months, trimesters and the entire pregnancy were calculated. Adjusted conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratios (ORs) per 10μg/m3 increment in PM2.5 and by PM2.5 quartiles during different gestational periods.Results: In this study, the estimated mean values of PM2.5, NO2, and SO2 exposure during the entire pregnancy were 88.0, 54.6, and 63.1μg/m3, respectively. Term low birth weight (TLBW) increased in association with per 10μg/m3 increment in PM2.5 for the 8th month [OR=1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.04, 1.22], the 9th month (OR=1.06, 95% CI: 0.99, 1.15), the third trimester (OR=1.17, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.29), and the entire pregnancy (OR=1.38, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.77) in models adjusted for one pollutant (PM2.5). In models categorizing the PM2.5 exposure by quartiles, comparing the second, third, and highest with the lowest PM2.5 exposure quartile, the PM2.5 was positively associated with TLBW during the 8th month (OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.88; OR: 1.77, 95% CI: 1.03, 3.04; OR: 1.92, 95% CI: 1.04, 3.55, respectively) and for the 9th month, only association for exposure in the third versus the lowest quartile was significant (OR: 1.91, 95% CI: 1.02, 3.58).Conclusions: The study provides evidence that exposure to PM2.5 during pregnancy might be associated with the risk of TLBW in the context of very high pollution level of PM2.5, and the 8th and 9th months were identified as potentially relevant exposure windows. The use of fertilizers to overcome nutrient constraints is standard practice in Paulownia fortunei plantations to increase stem wood production and tree yields. However, little is known about the responses and important role of the soil bacteria involved in the increases of soil fertility and standing volume with different fertilization. The 16S rRNA was used to compare four different fertilizer treatments for soil bacterial communities in three P. fortunei plantations, in Hunan Province, China. The results showed that the soil bacteria richness was significantly higher in plantations fertilized for ten years than for shorter times. The phyla Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes were more prevalent for ten-year old plantations, and Firmicutes significantly increased with organic manure treatment (denoted as OM; p < 0.05). OM significantly increased the ratio of Bacilli -like sequences in Firmicutes to 87%, 97% and 78% in seven-, nine- and ten-year-old plantations, respectively ( p < 0.05), while control and inorganic fertilizer had no effect. Principal coordinate analysis revealed that the soil bacterial communities in OM were different from the control and inorganic fertilizer in the three different plantations. Canonical correspondence analyses showed that available phosphorus and available magnesium were the most strongly related to bacterial community composition. The addition of OM led to soil being more fertile and an increased standing volume compared with the other fertilizer treatments. Bacilli , the most abundant class of Firmicutes may represent the bacterial type that responded most distinctly to organic manure fertilization and could be highly effective bacteria to increase soil fertility and achieve sustainable development of P. fortunei plantations. Background Triclosan (TCS) has been widely detected in pregnant women. The reproductive endocrine-disrupting effects of TCS have been observed in humans and animals. Little is known about the potential impact of prenatal TCS exposure on fetal reproductive development as well as its potential mechanism. Objectives We investigated the potential effect of prenatal TCS exposure on fetal reproductive hormones in cord blood and its potential mechanism in relation to placental steroidogenic enzymes. Methods Urinary TCS was detected among 537 healthy pregnant women from a prospective cohort in China. Four reproductive hormones in cord blood, namely E 2 (n = 430), T (n = 424), LH (n = 428) and FSH (n = 373), and three steroidogenic enzymes in placenta, namely P450arom (n = 233), 3β-HSD (n = 227) and 17β-HSD (n = 222), were measured. Results Prenatal TCS exposure was associated with increased testosterone concentrations in cord blood in a dose-dependent manner. Infants with prenatal TCS levels > 0.6 μg/L had, on average, a 0.23 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.05, 0.45, p = 0.02) higher testosterone concentrations in cord blood compared to those with prenatal TCS levels < 0.1 μg/L. Of note, prenatal TCS exposure was associated with increased testosterone and decreased E 2 concentrations in cord blood among male infants. Adverse associations were found between the prenatal TCS exposure and concentrations of three placental steroidogenic enzymes. 3β-HSD and P450arom demonstrated mediating effects in the association between prenatal TCS exposure and testosterone concentrations in cord blood. Conclusions Our findings suggested potential impacts of prenatal TCS exposure on reproductive hormones in cord blood mediated by steroidogenic enzymes, and male infants were more vulnerable. PM 2.5 is one of the most studied atmospheric pollutants due to its adverse impacts on human health and welfare and the environment. An improved model (the chemical mass balance gas constraint-Iteration: CMBGC-Iteration) is proposed and applied to identify source categories and estimate source contributions of PM 2.5. The CMBGC-Iteration model uses the ratio of gases to PM as constraints and considers the uncertainties of source profiles and receptor datasets, which is crucial information for source apportionment. To apply this model, samples of PM 2.5 were collected at Tianjin, a megacity in northern China. The ambient PM 2.5 dataset, source information, and gas-to-particle ratios (such as SO 2 /PM 2.5 , CO/PM 2.5 , and NOx/PM 2.5 ratios) were introduced into the CMBGC-Iteration to identify the potential sources and their contributions. Six source categories were identified by this model and the order based on their contributions to PM 2.5 was as follows: secondary sources (30%), crustal dust (25%), vehicle exhaust (16%), coal combustion (13%), SOC (7.6%), and cement dust (0.40%). In addition, the same dataset was also calculated by other receptor models (CMB, CMB-Iteration, CMB-GC, PMF, WALSPMF, and NCAPCA), and the results obtained were compared. Ensemble-average source impacts were calculated based on the seven source apportionment results: contributions of secondary sources (28%), crustal dust (20%), coal combustion (18%), vehicle exhaust (17%), SOC (11%), and cement dust (1.3%). Liver cancer ranks the sixth in cancer incidence and the second in tumor related mortality worldwide, with over half of the new cases and deaths occur in China. Because of difficulties in early diagnosis, rapid progression and lack of targeted drugs, the survival rate of liver cancer is extremely low. The existence of extraordinary heterogeneity has greatly limited the progress in early detection, molecular classification and targeted therapy of live cancer, owing to its varied risk factors, genetic susceptibilities, morphological diversity and microenvironmental discrepancies. Based on the heterogeneity of individual patients, precision medicine brings a new dimension to cancer personalized diagnosis and more-targeted treatment, and even give us access to pre-clinical screening of tumors in high risk populations. The present review article will provide progresses in precision diagnosis, molecular classification, signaling disregulation, preclinical models and personalized treatment of liver cancer in China. Background Currently, there is no dedicated equation to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for transplanted kidneys. This study aimed to compare the performance of serum creatinine (Scr)- and cystatin C (CysC)-based equations in Chinese renal transplant recipients. Methods A total of 252 stable renal transplant recipients were enrolled in this study. The plasma clearance of 99m Tc-DTPA (rGFR) was used as a reference standard. The Scr, CysC, and rGFR of the patients were measured on the same day. The bias, precision, accuracy (percentage of estimates within 10%, 30%, and 50% of rGFR), and agreements of 8 Scr and 5 CysC eGFR equations were assessed. The factors affecting the accuracy were also evaluated. Results Among the Scr-based equations, the Japanese Society of Nephrology-Chronic Kidney Disease Initiatives (JSN-CKDI) equation had the best overall performance with a bias of −6.2 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , and 96.1% of its estimates were within 30% of the rGFR. For the CysC-based equations, the Filler equation had the best performance with a bias of −3.9 mL/min/1.73 m 2 , and 93.7% of its estimates were within 30% of the rGFR. Overall, the CysC-based equations showed better performance than the Scr-based equations. In addition, significant differences were observed between bias and gender and between bias and rGFR value in some equations, whereas transplantation time and immunosuppressive regimens were not correlated with the bias. Conclusion The JSN-CKDI equation provides the best estimation of the GFR equations, and the CysC-based equations performed better than the Scr-based equations in this population. The low methionine content in plant-based diets is a major limiting factor for feed utilization by animals. However, the molecular consequences triggered by methionine deficiency have not been well characterized, especially in fish species, whose metabolism is unique in many aspects and important for aquaculture industry. In the present study, the primary muscle cells of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) were isolated and treated with or without methionine for 12 h in culture. The responses of nutrient sensing pathways, the proteomic profiling of metabolic processes, and the expressions of key metabolic molecules were systematically examined. Methionine deprivation (MD) suppressed target of rapamycin (TOR) signaling, activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and amino acid response (AAR) pathways. Reduced cellular protein synthesis and increased protein degradation by MD led to increased intracellular free amino acid levels and degradations. MD also reduced glycolysis and lipogenesis while stimulated lipolysis, thus resulted in decreased intracellular lipid pool. MD significantly enhanced energy expenditure through stimulated tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Collectively, our results identified a comprehensive set of transcriptional, proteomic, and signaling responses generated by MD and provided the molecular insight into the integration of cell homeostasis and metabolic controls in fish species. The objective of this study was to compare the laying performance, egg quality, and serum biochemistry of hens maintained in conventional cage rearing system (CRS), flat net-rearing system (NRS), and free range system (FRS) under summer conditions. Indigenous Xianju chickens (n = 540) were randomly allocated into cages or pens of rearing system groups, within each system there were 5 replicates with 36 hens in each replicate. The experiment lasted between 21 and 29 wk of age. Hen-day egg production (P = 0.00) and egg mass (P = 0.00) were higher in the CRS but were similar in the NRS and FRS. Lowest egg weight (P = 0.02), yolk weight (P = 0.00) and yolk ratio (P = 0.01), and feed intake (P = 0.01) were observed from the FRS, whereas lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) was recorded from the CRS (P = 0.01). Rearing systems had negligible effect on egg quality. Serum Ca (P = 0.04) and total protein (P = 0.03) levels were found to be higher in the CRS but were lower in the FRS. Serum levels of glucose (P = 0.01), cholesterol (P = 0.00), and triglyceride (P = 0.00) in the CRS increased compared with the NRS and FRS groups, whereas serum levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C; P = 0.01) in the CRS decreased. It can be concluded that under summer conditions, Xianju chickens from CRS had an advantage in terms of productivity parameters, but exhibited higher levels of serum lipids and glucose. To develop a consensus on the definition and measurement of Internet gaming disorder (IGD), several recent studies have used the DSM-5's proposed criteria for IGD as the basis in scale construction. This study contributes to this emerging consensus by developing and validating a new Chinese Internet Gaming Disorder Scale (C-IGDS) based on the DSM-5 criteria. A representative sample of Hong Kong community adults (n=502, 50% men, mean age=37.1, age range=18-60) was recruited for a telephone survey with random digit dialing. Various statistical techniques were used to assess the psychometric properties of the C-IGDS. The C-IGDS had good reliability (Cronbach's α=0.91) and structural validity (CFA model fit: RMSEA=0.027, CFI=0.991, TLI=0.988) in our sample. Moderate to moderately strong correlations with depressive symptoms (r=0.617, p<0.001), social anxiety symptoms (r=0.366, p<0.001), and gaming hours (r=0.412, p<0.001) supported the criterion validity of the C-IGDS. In addition, the C-IGDS exhibited strict measurement invariance for sex and at least strong measurement invariance for age. In addition to providing the first Chinese scale for measuring IGD based on the DSM-5's proposed criteria, this study provides empirical support for the validity of these diagnostic criteria as the basis for a universal measure of IGD. Metal contamination is widespread, but only a few studies have evaluated the toxicological risks of metals (Cd, Cu, and Pb) in earthworms from farmlands in North China (Hebei province). Amynthas hupeiensis , the dominant species in the study area, was used to determine the responses and detoxification mechanisms of uncontaminated (CK), and low (LM)-, and high (HM)-metal-contaminated soils following 7-, 14-, and 28-days exposure. Metal toxicity in LM and HM soils inhibited the biomass of A. hupeiensis. The concentrations of Cd in A. hupeiensis bodies indicated accumulated Cd appeared to remain steady with prolonged exposure, while Cu/Pb increased significantly with soil levels. Bioaccumulation occurred in the order Cd > Pb > Cu in LM soil, and in the order Cd > Cu ≈ Pb in HM soil, which was attributed to differences in available fractions between LM and HM soils. Physiological levels of biomarkers in A. hupeiensis were determined, including total protein (TP), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and malondialdehyde (MDA). Deviations in GSH, GPx, and AChE were considered to denote sensitive biomarkers using the IBRv2 index. Metabolomics data (1H nuclear magnetic resonance-based) revealed changes in metabolites following 28-days exposure to LM and HM soils. Differences in metabolism in A. hupeiensis following exposure to LM and HM were related to energy metabolism, amino acid biosynthesis, glycerophospholipid metabolism, inositol phosphate metabolism, and glutathione metabolism. Metal stress from LM and HM soils disturbed osmoregulation, resulting in oxidative stress, destruction of cell membranes and inflammation, and altered levels of amino acids required for energy by A. hupeiensis. These findings provide biochemical insights into the physiological and metabolic mechanisms underlying the ability of A. hupeiensis to resist metal stress, and for assessing the environmental risks of metal-contaminated soils in farmland in North China. Modern maize cultivars have high nitrogen responsiveness of grain yield. However, the underlying physiological mechanism is unclear. In the present study, from 17 cultivars released from 1950 s to 2010 s in China, three maize cultivars released in 1950 s (BMY), 1970 s (ZD2), and 1990 s (ZD958) were selected according to their growth responses to nitrogen supply. Nitrogen responsiveness of shoot biomass was highest in the new cultivar ZD958, and the lowest in the old cultivar BMY, with the medium cultivar ZD2 in between. Shoot biomass was closely related to leaf elongation rate. Leaf elongation was further analyzed using kinematic analysis method. Cell division rate and cell production rate were greater and more responsive to nitrogen supply in ZD958 than in the other cultivars. In agreement, there were more cells in the elongation zone of ZD958 and they were more responsive to increasing supply, resulting a longer leaf elongation zone. The interaction effect between cultivar and nitrogen supply on leaf elongation was in consistence with the change in gibberellin (GA 1 and GA 3) concentration in leaf growth zone. Accordingly, the genes encoding gibberellin biosynthesis or signal transduction was more up-regulated in ZD958, which was positively correlated to the up-regulation of genes related to cell cycle and DNA replication. On the contrary, the genes related to the inactivation of gibberellin was more down-regulated in ZD958. Exogenous application of bioactive gibberellin or its biosynthesis inhibitor eliminated the interaction effect between cultivar and nitrogen supply on leaf elongation rate. In China, the rate of spicy food consumption is rising, and chili pepper is among the most popular spicy foods consumed nationwide. According to the 'cued overeating' model, visual and olfactory cues of food can lead to changes in physiological responses and increase the likelihood and amount of food intake. However, no studies have explored the role of spicy food cues in cue reactivity among spicy food cravers. The exploratory study aimed to investigate cue-induced physiological responses, subjective cravings, eating behaviors and their associations in spicy food cravers. A group of spicy cravers (n = 59) and a group of age- and sex-matched non-cravers (n = 60) were exposed to food cues that contained or did not contain chili, during which physiological responses and food consumption were measured. The results revealed that spicy food cravers showed increased salivation and heart rate in response to food cues that contained chili compared to cues without chili and consumed significantly more chili oil after chili exposure. For cravers, heart rate during chili exposure was positively correlated with changes in subjective spicy food craving, and increases in subjective spicy food craving during chili exposure positively predicted subsequent chili oil consumption. The current exploratory study confirms the 'cued overeating' model and extends previous findings on food cravings, showing that even though chili peppers can elicit aversive oral burns and pain, they share the same physiological mechanism underlying cue reactivity as other kinds of cravings. The South American mussel, Mytella strigata , is a highly invasive fouling species of great concern along intertidal shores in East and Southeast Asia, posing serious threats to native biodiversity and ecosystems. Intertidal areas, being increasingly attacked by heatwaves over the last decade, are among the most thermally challenging habitats, yet the fate of this highly invasive mussel under scenarios of hotter heatwaves remains unknown. Here, we investigated how M. strigata responded to intensifying heatwaves frequently occurring in the South China Sea. Over 97% of individuals survived the five-day-lasting heatwaves, suggesting their high ability to cope with short-term heatwaves. Virtually unaffected clearance rate and absorption efficiency throughout the course of heatwaves indicate the maintenance of energy acquisition, and significantly decreased respiration rate implies the depression of energy metabolism, generating significant decreases in the O:N ratio when heatwaves occurred. Scope for growth of heatwaves-stressed mussels significantly decreased during initial exposure and then increased over time. These findings indicate the remarkable ability of M. strigata to cope with heatwaves recorded in its invasive habitats and call the attention for the rapid spread of this highly invasive fouling species in the context of climate change. • Impacts of heatwaves on highly invasive mussels in China were examined. • Almost all mussels survived heatwaves frequently nowadays in intertidal areas. • Physiological energetics provided insights into mussel responses to heatwaves. Optimal plant density and nitrogen (N) application rate are important to achieve high maize yield. High plant density increases plant-plant competition for light and nutrients. However, too much applied N promotes excessive vegetative growth and delays maturity, resulting in low N use efficiency (NUE) and potentially environmental problems. The physiological and molecular mechanisms behind the interaction between plant density and N application rate are largely unknown. We hypothesized that simultaneously improving maize yield and NUE depends on fine regulation of nitrogen partitioning in response to the interaction between nitrogen applications and plant densities. With a 2-year field experiment, we performed phenotypic, physiological, and gene expression analyses under two plant densities (low density of 60,000 plants ha-1 and high density of 90,000 plants ha-1) and three nitrogen application levels [115 (N1), 190 (N3) and 430 (N4) kg N ha-1] in the high N-responsiveness maize cultivar ZD958. By labeling maize with 15N, 2-year results showed that both 15N uptake per plant and 15N partitioning to ear decreased under high-density conditions. Compared to N1 treatment, application of N to N3/N4 level increased maize yield by 13.9%− 43.2%, which can be explained by bigger root angle, larger leaf area and lower lodging rate under high density condition. In addition, results in 2019 experiment showed that yield, NUE, nitrogen allocation to stem and the expression of some N transporter genes were regulated by the interaction between nitrogen applications and plant densities. Compared to the N4 treatment, N3 treatment has a 55.8% reduction in N, a tendency of increase in population yield, and increased NUE by 59.6% and 63.0% in low-density and high-density plantings, respectively. Our proposed model suggested that the appropriate N supply increased NUE by either increasing N translocation from leaves to ears under low-density conditions or by increasing N allocation to ears rather than to stems under high-density conditions. Based on correlation analysis, N allocation/translocation and expression of nitrogen transporter genes could be used as biomarkers to indicate appropriate levels of N application under different planting densities, and are thereby important for the simultaneously improving ZD958 yield and NUE in intensive agriculture. Walking, slow running (jogging) and fast running often occur in daily life, Physical Education Class and Physical Fitness Test for children. However, potential impact of jogging and running on plantar pressure of children is not clear. The purpose of this study was to compare the characteristics of plantar pressure distribution patterns in obese and non-obese children during walking, jogging and running, and evaluate biomechanical effects of three movements on obese children. A 2-m footscan plantar pressure plate (RSscan International, Belgium) was used to collect the gait data of 20 obese children (10.69±2.11years; 1.51±0.11m; 65.15±14.22kg) and 20 non-obese children (11.02±1.01years; 1.48±0.07m; 38.57±6.09kg) during three movements. Paired t-test and independent sample t-test were performed for statistical comparisons and ANOVA was used for comparisons of gait characteristics among three movements. Significance was defined as p <0.05. Propulsion phase during jogging for obese children was the longest among three movements (p=0.02). Peak pressures under metatarsal heads IV, V (M4, M5), midfoot (MF), heel medial (HM) and heel lateral (HL) during jogging for obese children were the highest among three movements (p=0.005, p=0.003, p=0.004, p=0.03, p=0.01). Arch index (AI) of left foot during jogging for obese children was the largest (p=0.04).Conclusions: Plantar pressure distribution during three movements changed differently between two groups. The peak pressures under most plantar regions and AI during jogging for obese children were the largest among three movements, indicating that jogging caused more stress to their lower extremities. Aims Prediabetes has received public attention owing to the increasing prevalence worldwide. Mounting evidence has indicated that inflammation directly contributed to the etiology of glucose metabolism disorders. Although immunoglobulins play a crucial role in immune responses, little research has been done on the link between immunoglobulins and prediabetes in adults. Hence, the aim of the present study was to explore the associations between immunoglobulins levels and prevalence of prediabetes in a general adult population. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 8856 adults (mean ± standard deviation age: 48.4 ± 10.7 years) in Tianjin, China. The serum immunoglobulins concentrations were measured by the immunonephelometric technique. Prediabetes was diagnosed using the following parameters in accordance with the American Diabetes Association: fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin. The associations between concentrations of immunoglobulins and the prevalence of prediabetes were assessed using multiple logistic regression models. Results Overall, the prevalence of prediabetes was 37.4% (3311/8856). After controlling for confounders, compared with the lowest quintile, the odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of prediabetes for the highest quintile of immunoglobulins (immunoglobulin G, immunoglobulin E, immunoglobulin M and immunoglobulin A) were as follows: 1.06 (0.91–1.23), 1.31 (1.13–1.52), 0.86 (0.74–1.01), and 1.19 (1.03–1.38) ( P for trend were 0.35, < 0.0001, 0.04 and 0.02), respectively. Conclusions Elevated immunoglobulin E and immunoglobulin A levels were independently and positively associated with prediabetes prevalence. There was also a trending association between immunoglobulin M concentrations and prediabetes prevalence. Further studies are necessary to clarify if there is a causal association of immunoglobulins in prediabetes or if they reflect early immunologic disturbances in these patients. Summary After three decades of mobile phone diffusion, thousands of mobile-phone-based health projects worldwide (“mHealth”), and hundreds of thousands of smartphone health applications, fundamental questions about the effect of phone diffusion on people’s healthcare behavior continue to remain unanswered. This study investigated whether, in the absence of specific mHealth interventions, people make different healthcare decisions if they use mobile phones during an illness. Following mainstream narratives, we hypothesized that phone use during an illness (a) increases and (b) accelerates healthcare access. Our study was based on original survey data from 800 respondents in rural Rajasthan (India) and Gansu (China), sampled from the general adult population in 2014 in a three-stage stratified cluster random sampling design. We analyzed single- and multi-level logistic, Poisson, and negative binomial regression models with cluster-robust standard errors. Contrary to other research at the intersection of mobile phones and healthcare, we captured actual health-related mobile phone use during people’s illnesses irrespective of whether they own a phone. Our analysis produced the first quantitative micro-evidence that patients’ personal mobile phone use is correlated with their healthcare decisions. Despite a positive association between phone use and healthcare access, health-related phone use was also linked to delayed access to public doctors and nurses. We considered theoretical explanations for the observed patterns by augmenting transaction cost and information deficit arguments with the prevailing health system configuration and with notions of heuristic decision-making during the healthcare-seeking process. Our study was a first step toward understanding the implications of mobile technology diffusion on health behavior in low- and middle-income countries in the absence of specific mHealth interventions. Future research will have to explore the causal relationships underlying these statistical associations. Such a link could potentially mean that development interventions aimed at improving access to healthcare continue to require conventional solutions to sustain healthcare equity. We report new zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope compositions, and whole-rock major and trace element and Sr–Nd isotope data for the Meiriqiecuo Formation (MF) bimodal volcanic rocks collected from the Duolong Cu mining district (DCMD) in the western Qiangtang terrane (QT), western Tibet. These data provide important constraints on the petrogenetic evolution and geodynamic setting of Early Cretaceous magmatism in the DCMD. The MF bimodal volcanic rocks are mainly basaltic andesite and andesite, with subordinate rhyolite. Four mafic samples yielded zircon U–Pb ages of ca. 108.2–113.0 Ma, and one silicic sample has an age of 109.3 ± 2.2 Ma, indicating that the mafic and silicic eruptions were contemporaneous. The MF bimodal volcanic rocks belong to the medium-K calc-alkaline to shoshonite series. The rocks show arc-type affinities characterized by significant enrichment in light rare earth (La N /Yb N = 7.74–12.60) and large-ion lithophile elements (Rb, Cs, K, and Pb), but depletions in the high-field-strength elements (Nb, Ta, and Ti), which geochemically resemble Andean arc basalts. Therefore, the MF bimodal volcanic rocks were likely emplaced at an Andean-type active continental margin and represent an Early Cretaceous magmatic arc that was located at the western QT margin. Moreover, the mafic volcanic rocks have high initial Sr isotopic ratios (0.705269–0.705413) and negative ε Nd (t) values of −1.5 to −0.6 compared with the silicic volcanic rocks (( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) i = 0.704770–0.704903; ε Nd (t) = +1.2 to +1.3). Zircons from silicic samples have significantly higher ε Hf (t) values (+11.6 to +15.5) and predominantly lower Paleoproterozoic Hf crustal model ages ( T DMC = 180–428 Ma) than the mafic samples, which have variable ε Hf (t) values of +3.4 to +13.0 and T DMC ages of 346–952 Ma. These results indicate that the mafic and silicic end-members of the MF bimodal suite were generated from mantle and crustal sources, respectively. The basaltic andesite and andesite may have been derived from mantle enriched by the metasomatism of subducted fluids, whereas the rhyolite could have been derived by partial melting of mafic juvenile crust that originated from an older and more depleted mantle. In light of the geochemical characteristics and field relationships, we propose that breakoff of the Bangong–Nujiang oceanic lithosphere was responsible for the generation and emplacement of the MF bimodal volcanic rocks. The fact that the MF bimodal volcanic arc magmatism was active at ca. 108–113 Ma indicates that it was associated with closure of the Bangong–Nujiang Ocean via an arc-arc “soft” collision during the Early Cretaceous. The utility of aquatic macroinvertebrates as indicators of the ecological conditions has long been established in rivers and streams. However, useful invertebrate indicators of wetland conditions remain more poorly developed probably because wetland macroinvertebrates have many attributes that reduce their ability to reflect wetland environmental quality. Snails, however, possess several attributes that should make them useful as potential environmental indicators. In this study, we sampled snail assemblages in 16 wetlands across a range of conditions, from relatively pristine “best available” reference sites to obviously human-impacted sites in Northeastern China’s Sanjiang Plain. We aimed to investigate the utility of snail taxa for indicating environmental variation across these wetland habitats. Results showed that study wetlands divided into three major groups using multivariate analyses: the five wetlands provided the most protection and having the least impacts grouped as apparent “references”, and ten other wetlands in obviously developed areas separated into two other groups of wetlands. Overall snail abundance was higher in the reference wetlands than the impacted wetlands. Seven of the snail species were indicators of specific wetland types. Five pulmonate species including Segmentina nitida , Segmentina hemisphaerula , and Planorbis corneus , Aplexa hypnorum (Physidae), and Galba pervia (Lymnaeidae) were indicators of reference wetlands. Non-pulmonate Bithynia ussuriensis (Bithyniidae) and Valvata sibirica (Valvatidae) were indicators of one of the categories of impacted wetlands. In NE China, snail assemblages and certain indicator species may provide a robust and rapid indicator of environmental impacts on wetlands. Because snails are distributed widely and are generally easy to sample and identify, this overall approach should have applicability in the many wetlands worldwide where diverse snail assemblages naturally occur. Purpose: To evaluate the corneal biomechanical metrics by Corvis ST (CST) in healthy Chinese adults.Methods: This cross-sectional study used CST to measure intraocular pressure (IOP), central corneal thickness (CCT), and corneal biomechanical parameters, including time, velocity, length, deformation amplitude at the first (A1T, A1V, A1L, A1DA) and second applanation (A2T, A2V, A2L, A2DA), time, radius curvature and deformation amplitude at highest concavity (HCT, HCR, HCDA) and peak distance (PD).Results: A total of 158 healthy adults (158 eyes) were included in the final analysis. No significant differences were observed between male and female for any biomechanical parameters (All P>0.05). With increasing age, a significant trend of increase was detected among A1V, A1DA, A2T, A2DA, and HCDA (All P<0.05). The A1T decreased significantly with increasing age (P<0.001). The cluster analysis using Pearson coefficient divided the CST parameters into 5 sub-clusters, where IOP, A1T, A2V had strongest relation. The multivariable linear regression analyses demonstrated that age was independently associated with A1DA, A2DA, and HCDA. The IOP was positively associated with A1T, A2V, and HCR, while negatively with A1V, A2T, HCT, PD, and HCDA. The CCT was positively correlated with A1L, A1DA, A2L, A2V, or HCR.Conclusions: CST provided informative corneal biomechanical measurements in this Chinese population. Most corneal biomechanical parameters were associated with IOP, and several parameters were influenced by age or CCT, suggesting adjustment of these factors was needed before interpretations of CST outputs. Background: An understudied component of the diet, branchedchain fatty acids (BCFAs) are distinctive saturated fatty acids that may have an important influence on health. Human-milk fatty acid composition is known to differ worldwide, but comparative data are lacking on BCFAs. Objective: We tested the hypotheses that concentrations of BCFAs in human milk differ between populations and are associated with maternal diet. Design: We surveyed the BCFA composition of samples collected as part of a standardized, prospective study of human-milk composition. Mothers were enrolled from 3 urban populations with differing diets: Cincinnati, Ohio; Shanghai, China; and Mexico City, Mexico. Enrollment was limited to healthy mothers of term singleton infants. We undertook a cross-sectional analysis of milk from all women with samples at postpartum week 4 (n = 359; ~ 120 women/site). Fatty acids were extracted from milk by using a modified Bligh-Dyer technique and analyzed by gas chromatography. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA and Tobit regression. For Cincinnati mothers, 24-h diet recalls were analyzed in relation to the individual BCFA concentrations measured in milk samples. Results: Total BCFAs in milk differed by site, with the highest concentration in Cincinnati followed by Mexico City and Shanghai (mean ± SE: 7.90 ± 0.41, 6.10 ± 0.36, and 4.27 ± 0.25 mg/100 mL, respectively; P < 0.001). Site differences persisted after delivery mode, maternal age, and body mass index were controlled for. The individual concentrations of iso-14:0, iso-16:0, iso-18:0, anteiso-15:0, and anteiso-17:0 also differed between sites. Milk concentrations of iso-14:0 and anteiso-15:0 were associated with maternal intake of dairy; iso-16:0 was associated with maternal intakes of dairy and beef. Conclusions: BCFA concentrations in milk at 4 wk postpartum differed between mothers from Cincinnati, Shanghai, and Mexico City. Variations in human-milk BCFAs are influenced by diet. Background: Excessive iodine intake may have adverse effects on the thyroid, particularly in children, but the safe upper iodine intake concentration in children is unclear. Objective: We assessed the adverse effects of high iodine intake from iodine-rich drinking water on thyroid size in children by examining associations between thyroid volume (Tvol), total goiter rate (TGR), and iodine intake. Design: In a multistage cross-sectional survey, we collected two 24-h urine samples on 2 nonconsecutive days and determined 24-h urinary iodine excretion, then calculated habitual daily iodine intake. Ultrasonographic Tvol was measured, and TGR was calculated based on international and Chinese reference ranges for Tvol in children. Results: This study included 2089 children from Shandong province, where the median (IQR) drinking water iodine concentration was 183 mg/L (69-406 mg/L). The median (IQR) 24-h urinary iodine concentrations for the 2 collections were 381 mg/L (203-649 mg/L) and 398 mg/L (202-687 mg/L), respectively. The median (IQR) habitual daily iodine intake of children was 298 mg/d (186-437 mg/d). Tvols were slightly higher in boys than in girls (P = 0.035). The overall TGR was 9.7% and did not differ by sex. The TGR was ~5% for children aged 7-10 and 11-14 y at iodine intakes of 200-249 and 250-299 mg/d, respectively. With the use of logistic regression and 2-step linear regression, a nonlinear association was observed between Tvol, TGR, and iodine intake, with a threshold intake of 150 mg/d. Conclusions: Tvol begins to increase in children when iodine intake is $ 150 mg/d, and the TGR exceeds 5% when daily iodine intake is $250 mg/d for children aged 7-10 y and $300 mg/d for children aged 11-14 y. Swimming performance is extremely important to critical activities of fishes, such as foraging, anti-predator, and migration. As one of primary stock enhancement fish species in China, it is imperative to study on swimming performance of the large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea). In the present study, the swimming performance of juvenile large yellow croaker was investigated, including the behavior, muscle morphology, stress physiology, and genetic mechanisms underlying the individual difference. Juveniles of the croaker were individually subjected to the critical swimming speed (U crit) test, and thereby divided into fast (36.47 cm/s) and slow (18.65 cm/s) groups. The juveniles in the fast group had significantly higher tail beat frequency, smaller muscle fiber diameter and more muscle fiber number, as well as lower plasma cortisol and corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) levels than those in the slow group. Meanwhile, expression levels of hsp70 and pcna in the brain were significantly higher in the fast group than in the slow group, however no significant difference was observed in syt1a expression. Furthermore, the key genes and pathways involved in the swimming performance were assessed by mapping the white skeletal muscle transcriptome. We found that a total of 157 transcripts was differentially expressed between the fast and slow groups, enriched in oxidative phosphorylation, glycosaminoglycan biosynthesis, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism, cellular senescence, and cardiac muscle contraction pathways. A multitude of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunits and solute carrier family genes were especially related. In conclusion, we for the first time found that fish swimming performance directly links to muscle fiber plasticity, stress physiology, and molecular base divergence in the large yellow croaker. Genotypic difference in nitrogen responsiveness of maize grain yield has gained considerable attention, however, the underlying physiological mechanism is less understood. Leaf area and plant type are important factors determining biomass production, and both of them are regulated by nitrogen supply. The current research aims to assess whether high nitrogen responsiveness is related to leaf growth and plant type. A 2-year field experiment was conducted with three maize cultivars (BMY, ZD2 and ZD958) differing in nitrogen responsiveness under a wide range of nitrogen supply (0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg N ha-1). The links between grain yield, leaf area dynamics, leaf angle and orientation value, and radiation use efficiency were investigated. Nitrogen responsiveness, defined as yield increment per unit of increased nitrogen supply, was 8.3–29.1% higher in ZD958 compared with the other cultivars. The maximum grain yield of ZD958 was 21.4–74.6% higher than that of the other cultivars. With increasing nitrogen supply, the increments in maximum leaf area and linear growth rate of leaf area were greater in ZD958, which was positively correlated with grain yield. The interaction effect between cultivar and nitrogen supply was significant on leaf length, but not on leaf width. Across the combinations between cultivar and nitrogen supply, the variation in grain yield was explained by leaf length rather than leaf width. High nitrogen supply increased leaf angle and reduced leaf orientation value, so as to make the leaf more horizontally distributed. However, this change was less significant in ZD958, indicating that the plant type was more compact under high nitrogen supply in maize cultivars with high nitrogen responsiveness. Radiation use efficiency, defined as the slope of the linear relationship between above-ground biomass produced and cumulated intercepted photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) was 5.2–13.2% higher in ZD958 than that of BMY. Accumulating evidence suggests that an instant exposure to particulate matter (PM) may elevate blood pressure (BP), where cell-adhesion regulatory genes may be involved in the interplay. However, few studies to date critically examined their interaction, and it remained unclear whether these genes modified the association. To assess the association between instant PM exposure and BP, and to examine whether single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) mapped in four cell adhesion regulatory genes modify the relationship, a cross-sectional study was performed, based on the baseline of an ongoing family-based cohort in Beijing, China. A total of 4418 persons from 2089 families in Northern China were included in the analysis. Four tagged SNPs in cell adhesion regulatory genes were selected among ZFHX3, CXCL12, RASGRP1 and MIR146A. A generalized additive model (GAM) with a Gaussian link was adopted to estimate the change in blood pressure after instant PM 2.5 or PM 10 exposure. A cross-product term of PM 2.5 /PM 10 and genotype was incorporated into the GAM model to test for interaction. The study observed that an instant exposure to either PM 2.5 or PM 10 was found to be associated with elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP). On average, a 10 μg/m3 increase in instant exposure to PM 2.5 and PM 10 concentration corresponded to 0.140% (95% CI: 0.014%–0.265% , P = 0.029) and 0.173% (95% CI: 0.080%–0.266%, P < 0.001) higher SBP. However, diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was not elevated as the PM 2.5 or PM 10 concentration increased (P > 0.05). A synergetic interaction on SBP was observed between SNPs in four cell adhesion regulatory genes (rs2910164 in MIR146A , rs2297630 in CXCL12, rs7403531 in RASGRP1 , and rs7193343 in ZFHX3) and instant PM 2.5 exposure (P for interaction <0.05). Briefly, as carriers of risk alleles in each of these four genes increased, an enhanced association was found between instant PM 2.5 exposure and SBP. Aquaculture has greater potential for seafood production than wild capture fisheries. To meet the growing demand for seafood, China's marine aquaculture industry has begun building deep-water cages in the open sea. However, under these conditions, fish encounter strong currents and waves, and ensuring their healthy growth is key to the farming process. To address these issues, it is necessary to study the sustained swimming abilities of cultured fish species. Blackhead seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii) and red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) are traditional economic fish species in China; however, their sustained swimming ability under a constant current has been underexplored. Therefore, we examined the endurance swimming ability of three size classes of blackhead seabream and red drum at 20 °C. The fish were then subjected to swimming tests of 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 min at a constant swimming speed of 0.55 m/s (0.80 m/s), 0.65 m/s (0.90 m/s), and 0.70 m/s (0.98 m/s). The fish were then dissected to obtain muscle, blood, and liver samples; sample metabolite concentrations were measured at six time points, each of which guaranteed five sets of valid data. The results indicated that red drum has a significantly stronger swimming ability, and can be cultured in waters with a short-term flow rate not exceeding 0.75 m/s or 3.5 BL/s. Further, blackhead seabream can be cultured in waters with a flow velocity lower than 0.55 m/s or 2.5 BL/s. The species-related metabolic differences were mainly reflected in the hepatic glycogen and blood glucose concentrations, and those in swimming ability caused by body length were mainly reflected by the hepatic glycogen concentration. The hepatic glycogen concentration had the most significant effect on fish with body lengths >28 cm (P < 0.05). This paper investigates the correlation of human thermal sensation with multiple physiological information in stable indoor thermal environment. Fifteen young male subjects from East China participate in the experimental study. The thermal sensation votes (TSVs) are collected by subjective questionnaire, and six physiological information are measured simultaneously, i.e., wrist skin temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability (ECG), skin conductance and blood oxygen saturation. A total of nine different physiological markers including four ECG signals are recorded. The deviation analysis between TSV and PMV standard is conducted. A detailed correlation analysis of nine physiological markers with thermal sensation is performed. It is found that young males of East China prefer lower ambient temperature in summer than PMV's prediction. Two environmental and seven physiological variables have obvious correlations with TSV. Among them, wrist skin temperature, heart rate and ECG (pNN50) are three physiological markers that have high correlations with TSV. On this basis, a data-driven thermal sensation predictive model based on multiple physiological information is designed. Urban green spaces (UGS) offer several ecosystemical benefits to the urban environment. However, these advantages may be weakened by alterations of plants photophysiological mechanisms due to increasing tropospheric ozone (O 3 ) concentrations, a serious problem for China. To evaluate their utilization in UGS, we selected three widely-used urban plant species (smoke tree, Cotinus coggygria Scop.; marigold, Tagetes erecta Linn.; rose, Rosa chinensis Jacp.) to investigate their biometric and photophysiological responses to (i) ambient air (AA), (ii) AA + 60 ppb O 3 (AA + 60), and (iii) AA + 120 ppb O 3 (AA + 120) (9 h d −1 , from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm). Considering visible injury and biomass production, smoke tree and marigold seem to be O 3 -sensitive, whereas rose should be considered more tolerant. The exposure to the pollutant gas reduced photosynthetic efficiency in all seedlings. However, different features were shown throughout our study by the three species here monitored. In smoke tree, stomatal limitations seemed to be its principal weakness. In marigold, the reduction of the photosynthetic performance was mainly ascribable to impairments of both light and dark reactions of photosynthesis. Here, stomatal closure maybe not the cause to limit the photosynthetic rate, but a down-regulated response. Unexpectedly, CO 2 assimilation increased in roses exposed to AA + 60 and did not change in those treated with AA + 120 after one month from the beginning of the exposure (FBE). This seemed due to a better efficacy of these plants in dark reactions of photosynthesis. This feature was confirmed also a month later. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that non-invasive methods such as gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence for monitoring photosynthetic performance of urban plants can be useful to give guidelines to manage UGS in the “climate change era”. Generally, in severe O 3 -polluted areas as those of several cities of China, the plants with high-efficient biochemical processes driving a well photosynthetic performance (such as rose) might be a recommended choice. Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an important oilseed crop worldwide, and is also considered as one of the most promising plants for alkali-affected soil amelioration in the northeast of China. Seed germination plays a vital role in seedling establishment, and is always sensitive to alkali stress. However, little is known about the dynamic changes and regulatory mechanisms of gene expression and metabolic processes of this species during germination stage under alkali stress. In the present study, physiological, metabolome and transcriptome responses in germinating seeds of castor were investigated when exposed to 0, 50, 100 and 150 mM alkalinity (NaHCO 3). The results showed that alkali stress sharply decreased germination percentage. The Na+ content increased but K+ content decreased under alkalinity. In addition, the malondialdehyde and proline contents increased with the increasing alkalinities. Meanwhile, 50, 100 and 150 mM alkalinity induced 31, 48 and 113 differential metabolites, respectively. Furthermore, transcriptome profiling result showed that there were 138, 845 and 694 differentially expressed genes in the seeds under different concentrations alkali stresses, respectively. The integrating analysis of metabolite and gene expression changes indicating that germination response of castor seeds under alkali stress was closely related to amino acid metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and nucleotide metabolism. The adaptive strategies of castor seeds under alkaline stress were promoting amino acid metabolism and tricarboxylic acid cycle to regulate osmotic balance and ROS level; as well as providing materials and energy for secondary metabolism, although alkali stress affected the membrane fluidity due to the reduction of unsaturated fatty acid content. Moreover, castor seeds increased metabolites on nucleotide biosynthesis to ensure their germination process under alkaline salt stress. Increasing atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has been recognized to have a profound influence on ecosystem functioning, especially in typically N- and water-limited temperate forests. However, the effects of N deposition on leaf-derived iWUE estimates and the underlying physiological mechanisms remain poorly understood, as well as effects related to the developmental stage of temperate plantation forests. Using leaf stable carbon and oxygen isotope (δ13C and δ18O) approaches, we investigated iWUE of sapling and mature larch plantations subjected to decadal N addition in northern China. Results showed that saplings had significantly higher leaf iWUE compared to mature individuals. Long-term N addition significantly increased iWUE by 6.85% in the sapling stand, with no remarkable changes occurred in the mature stand. In saplings, the N-addition-induced increase in iWUE could be attributed to enhanced photosynthesis (illustrated by higher leaf N concentration), while leaf shading may cause lower leaf photosynthesis regardless of N level in mature trees. The higher and temporal stable leaf iWUE in saplings imply conservative water-use strategy, whereas the opposites in mature trees imply profligate water-use strategy. Objectives: The aims of this study were to document the trajectory of weight gain and body mass index (BMI) in children with type 1 narcolepsy, and to analyze basal metabolic rate (BMR).Methods: A total of 65 Chinese children with type 1 narcolepsy with a disease duration ≤12 months were included. In addition, 79 healthy age-matched students were enrolled as controls. Height and body weight were measured every six months for up to 36 months to calculate BMI growth. BMR was measured using COSMED K4b2 indirect calorimetry in 34 patients and 30 healthy controls at six months. At the end of 36 months, the BMR was compared among 18 patients and 16 healthy controls.Results: The children with type 1 narcolepsy showed higher BMIs at follow-up assessments. At the end of the study, 38.46% of the patients were obese and an additional 26.15% were overweight. The patients' BMI growth at six, 12, 18, 24 and 30 months of follow-up was significantly higher, but not at month 36. The patients' basal energy expenditure was significantly lower than that of the controls at six months but not at 36 months.Conclusion: BMI increased rapidly in children with type 1 narcolepsy after disease onset, but BMI growth decreased gradually with prolonged disease. Decreased BMR is an important cause underlying rapid weight gain. Aspartic acid racemization in teeth has been increasingly used to estimate chronological age with a considerably high accuracy in forensic practice. The Chaoshan population in South China is relatively isolated in geography, and has specific lifestyle and dietary inhibits. It is still unknown whether this method is suitable for this population. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between chronological age and the d/l aspartic acid ratio in dentin in the third molar tooth of the Chaoshan population. Fifty-eight non-carious third molar teeth (31 mandibles and 27 maxillae), from 58 living individuals of known age (24 males and 34 females), were retrieved. Dentin was extracted from these teeth. The d- and l-aspartic acids in dentins were separated and detected by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Linear regression was performed between the d/l aspartic acid ratio of dentins and chronological age. Results showed that the correlation coefficient (r) was 0.969, and the mean absolute error (MAE) was 2.19 years, its standard deviation (SD) was ±1.53 years, indicating excellent correlation. There was no significant difference in racemization rates of dentin between sexes (P=0.113, F=2.6), or between mandibles and maxillae (P=0.964, F=0.000). Results indicate that the ratio of the d and l forms of aspartic acid of dentins, in the third molar, is closely correlated with chronological age, special lifestyle do no obviously affect the accuracy of the age estimations by aspartic acid racemization of the dentin in the third molar and that aspartic acid racemization in the third molar dentin can be used as an accurate method to estimate chronological age in the Chaoshan population in South China. Survival rate and emergence timing of the overwintering generation of many temperate agricultural pests is expected to affect their population dynamics and damage potential. However the impact of fluctuating winter and spring conditions on the successful emergence of insects post-diapause is generally poorly known. Here we characterize diapause responses in the peach fruit moth (PFM) pest, Carposina sasakii Matsumura, which overwinters at the larval stage in soil. Temperatures at a depth of 5 cm fluctuated markedly in early spring during the critical PFM post-diapause period (late December to mid-April). By removing outdoor larval samples over this period, we show that the completion of diapause for PFM in northern China starts from late January and continues until March. This extended developmental period is accompanied by an ongoing loss of cold resistance. Temperature conditions experienced in the field were associated with cold tolerance and emergence times, and reduced cold tolerance was associated with shorter emergence time. Cryoprotectants declined from late December, and levels were associated with changes in the supercooling point (SCP) of the larvae, but both correlated weakly to survival under cold stress during the post-diapause period. These findings suggest that diapause stage and soil temperatures should be taken into account when predicting field dynamics of soil-dwelling overwintering insects based on degree day accumulation models and other approaches. The aim of the work described here was to establish the range for optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and potential factors influencing ONSD in healthy Chinese adults. Both ONSDs were measured twice in the sagittal and transversal planes by two observers. The final ONSD value for each participant was the average of 16 measurements of both eyes. The ONSD range (N = 3680) among 230 participants was 2.65-4.30 mm. The upper ONSD limit was lower than those in previous studies in Caucasian and African samples. Simple linear regression analyses revealed that the ONSD was correlated with sex, body mass index and waistline and head circumference. After adjustment for potential confounds between these factors, sex (coefficient = 0.225, p < 0.001) and body mass index (coefficient = 0.042, p < 0.001) were independently associated with ONSD. Underweight women had the smallest ONSD. These results suggest that racial, sex, and body mass index differences should be noted when assessing ultrasonographic criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the incidence and predictors of in-stent re-stenosis (ISR) for nitinol stents in the superficial femoral artery (SFA) by color duplex ultrasound (CDU). In total, 235 patients undergoing SFA stenting were included in the present study. The cumulative ISR rates at 3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 mo post-procedure were 5.4%, 24.0%, 49.0%, 61.5% and 71.5%, respectively. The markedly low peak systolic velocity of the popliteal artery (PSV2) post-operation was inversely correlated with the ISR. The threshold for ≥50% re-stenosis was PSV2 ≤ 63 cm/s with 86.6% sensitivity and 90.5% specificity. With regard to re-occlusion, the PSV2 was ≤40 cm/s with 98.1% sensitivity and 93.4% specificity. Cox regression analysis indicated that the cumulative stent length, diabetes, and pre-stent stenosis level were independent risk factors of ISR. Protein is a necessary nutrient for the sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicus , an important commercial species in China, South Korea and Japan. In this study, the dietary protein requirements of two newly discovered color morphs—white and purple was investigated and compared with the common, green morph. The green, white and purple morphs were fed a diet with five different protein levels (1, 6, 11, 16 and 21%) for 60 days with a mixture of soybean meal and fish meal (1:1) as the protein source, and their growth, energy budget, physiological and immunological performance were measured. Results showed that dietary protein levels had a significant effect on the growth performance of A. japonicus (P < 0.05). The maximum specific growth rate (SGR) and proportion of energy allocated for growth occurred at dietary protein levels of 6 and 11%, and the food conversion efficiency (FCE) was highest at the 11% protein level, indicating that the optimum dietary protein level for these color morphs is at ~ 11%. Apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter (ADMD) and crude protein (ACPD) increased, but the ingestion rate decreased with increasing dietary protein levels, due perhaps to the decreased sea-mud content of the diets. The energy allocated to excretion, and the free ammonia and malonaldehyde content in coelomic fluid increased with increasing dietary protein levels, which can be explained by enhanced protein metabolism. Trypsin activity decreased significantly when dietary protein was > 16%, indicating that the protein content was beyond the digestive ability of sea cucumber, and that excess protein in the diet inhibits protein digestion. Catalase (CAT) and glutamic–oxaloacetic transaminase activity was positively and significantly correlated with SGR, indicating that rapid growth was supported by a robust immune system and effective protein metabolism. At a 1% dietary protein level, the purple color morph had significantly higher SGR, FCE, ACPD and CAT activity, and allocated more energy for growth than the green morph, indicating that the purple morph may be better adapted to a low protein diet than the green morph. The white morph had lower SGR, FCE, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and CAT activity, and allocated less energy to growth, but had a higher excretion energy and higher free ammonia content in coelomic fluid than the green or purple morphs, indicating a difference or physiological defect in protein metabolism in the white morph. Background: Idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) originating from the pulmonary sinus cusp (PSC) have not been sufficiently clarified.Objectives: The goal of this study was to investigate the prevalence, electrocardiographic characteristics, mapping, and ablation of idiopathic VAs arising from the PSC.Methods: Data were analyzed from 218 patients undergoing successful endocardial ablation of idiopathic VAs with a left bundle branch block morphology and inferior axis deviation.Results: Twenty-four patients had VAs originating from the PSC. In the first 7 patients, initial ablation performed in the right ventricular outflow tract failed to abolish the clinical VAs but produced a small change in the QRS morphology in 3 patients. In all 24 patients, the earliest activation was eventually identified in the PSC, at which a sharp potential was observed preceding the QRS complex onset by 28.2 ± 2.9 ms. The successful ablation site was in the right cusp (RC) in 10 patients (42%), the left cusp (LC) in 8 (33%), and the anterior cusp (AC) in 6 (25%). Electrocardiographic analysis showed that RC-VAs had significantly larger R-wave amplitude in lead I and a smaller aVL/aVR ratio of Q-wave amplitude compared with AC-VAs and LC-VAs, respectively. The R-wave amplitude in inferior leads was smaller in VAs localized in the RC than in the LC but did not differ between VAs from the AC and LC.Conclusions: VAs arising from the PSC are not uncommon, and RC-VAs have unique electrocardiographic characteristics. Since the beginning of the 1980s, 33 emerging tick-borne agents have been identified in mainland China, including eight species of spotted fever group rickettsiae, seven species in the family Anaplasmataceae, six genospecies in the complex Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, 11 species of Babesia, and the virus causing severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome. In this Review we have mapped the geographical distributions of human cases of infection. 15 of the 33 emerging tick-borne agents have been reported to cause human disease, and their clinical characteristics have been described. The non-specific clinical manifestations caused by tick-borne pathogens present a major diagnostic challenge and most physicians are unfamiliar with the many tick-borne diseases that present with non-specific symptoms in the early stages of the illness. Advances in and application of modern molecular techniques should help with identification of emerging tick-borne pathogens and improve laboratory diagnosis of human infections. We expect that more novel tick-borne infections in ticks and animals will be identified and additional emerging tick-borne diseases in human beings will be discovered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aiming at the current situation in China with vast territory, diverse climate, and a big difference on thermal adaptation of the indoor thermal environment among the people in different regions, the paper analyzes the typical model research of thermal adaptation, and points out the features of three representative models and the ignored reason of physiological thermal adaptation, summarizes some results on field studies of thermal adaptation in China, induces three research directions about physiological indexes selection research, physiological thermal adaptation research and multivariate evaluation model research of thermal comfort based on the physical, psychological and behavioral adjustments. The paper proposes to explain the differences of physiological thermal adaptation in these different climatic regions and to further finds out the relations between all these differences and the physiological indexes. The goal is to establish physiological index to evaluate thermal comfort and to perfect the climate adaptation model which can give some advises to the architecture designers on how to realize the comfortable and energy-saving thermal environment.
