Abstract The main aim of this paper is to evaluate if certain processes that were documented in a specific area of Central-Southern Patagonia during the Late Holocene were also registered in a broader spatial scale. Previous investigations carried out in our study area located in Central-Western Santa Cruz province, Patagonia, have stated that climatic fluctuations during the Late Holocene (last 2500 years) were the cause of a reduction of hunter-gatherers' residential mobility. The new climatic conditions were characterized by important environmental droughts, which increased during the Mediaeval Climatic Anomaly, circa 900 years BP. This reduction in mobility resulted in concentrations of populations in low altitude basins and increased logistical and seasonal mobility, defined as a process of extensification. In this paper we take a broad spatial perspective to evaluate to what extent the low residential mobility identified in our research area had a correlation in a larger regional scale. Also we assess if this lead to a regional differentiation among hunter-gatherer populations, previous to European contact (450 years BP). In order to achieve these aims, we undertake a coarse grain analysis, using available data published on the composition and distribution of the archaeological record for Central-Southern Patagonia, an area of about 450.000 km2. Specifically, we consider evidence about technology, zooarchaeology, rock art, mortuary record and paleodietary studies. The analysis indicates that a reduced residential mobility could have occurred in certain areas of the study region, linked to the aforementioned climatic changes. On the issue of regional differentiation, the archaeological record highlights the complexity of this process. There are a variety of arguments both for and against the idea of a process of regionalization in Central-Southern Patagonia in the Late Holocene. We propose a process of differentiation of populations with low residential mobility which nonetheless remained connected through the circulation of goods, information and people. This paper compares quantitative and qualitative results from selected pottery assemblages in sites in the northern Philippines with those from sites in the Mariana Islands. Pottery appears in this region sometime between 4000 and 3000 years ago, with the pottery of the Marianas Islands being towards the younger end of this age range. Arguments concerning the origins of the first pottery in the Marianas have been dominated to date by the correlation of selected decorative and stylistic attributes of the Marianas pottery with that of pottery found in sites in Island Southeast Asia (ISEA). The similarities and differences in the pottery at the assemblage levels, however, have never been fully articulated. Recent arguments regarding the pottery have been specifically focused on perceived parallels between the early Marianas Red pottery and the early pottery of the Cagayan Valley in the northern Philippines. Although it has not been explicitly suggested that the northern Philippines was the immediate departure point for migrant boats, it has nevertheless been argued that there are more parallels between the pottery assemblages of these two regions than any others. This has even been a contributing factor in recent revisions to the Out of Taiwan model, which concerns the migration and dispersal of Austronesian language speakers. The results presented herein, however, show that there are distinct differences in the pottery technologies of the two regions that would not be expected if the sites are directly related. Consequently, there is no clear evidence that the pottery assemblages of the northern Philippines are ancestral to those of the Marianas. While both the early Marianas Red pottery and the northern Philippines pottery assemblages originate in a red-type pottery horizon that exists in both ISEA and the Marianas, the data to date suggests only a loose affinity between the assemblages, there being a high degree of variation in the constituent pottery characteristics between regions. This paper presents the results of a study of firewood use and management by human groups in the Ongamira valley, Córdoba, Argentina (dated between c. 5700-950 BP). In order to understand firewood gathering practices at different periods in the Late Holocene, samples from 63 combustion events recorded in 9 rockshelters were analysed. From the anthracological analysis (14,976 fragments) 19 woody taxa, and 4 botanically indeterminate taxa, were identified belonging to Chaco Serrano forest vegetation. The identification of abundant small flat fireplaces suggests short-lived activities repeated over time. A detailed analysis of the samples (types of fire pits, alterations during combustion and taphonomic processes) permits inferring firewood gathering in the local vegetation around the sites, as well as some taxa belonging to different environmental settings. Archaeological evidence indicates that groups were mobile, with the establishment of a network of places in the landscape where different activities were carried out (tool production, food consumption and pottery manufacture) with fire making as a central activity. Palaeoclimatic records from southern tip of South America during the Last Holocene, indicate important climate intervals, such as the Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little Ice Age, which offered new scenarios to hunter-gatherer groups who inhabited the region. The aim of this paper is to explore the social practices carried out by hunter-fisher-gatherer societies of the southern part of the Atlantic Coast of Tierra del Fuego island (53–55°S, 66–74°W) in order to deal with these environmental changes. From our perspective, foragers have played an active role in designing strategies to cope with environmental fluctuations. Consequently, we argue that in a context of ecological uncertainty, these societies would have developed flexible strategies in terms of subsistence, technology and settlement patterns. In order to test this proposal, zooarchaeological and technological analysis of different archaeological assemblages dated between the 1300 to 220 BP were undertaken. The results show that these hunter-fisher-gatherer societies exploited a broad range of faunal resources using a versatile technology which encompassed tools with low production values and high use values. Likewise, the analysis of landscape organization revealed a settlement strategy centered on the most productive habitats, which were preferentially reoccupied. We suggest that these strategies, supported by cumulative knowledge and material conditions, could have enhanced social resilience and sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we present and assess human isotopic data (δ13C and δ15N) available for Southern Chile. We analyze 24 cases from six different geographical zones, dated 200-1850 AD. This new information allows us to characterize individuals who had different subsistence patterns, social organization and historical trajectories, vis-a-vis phenomena like the adoption of ceramics (150 BC), cultigens (750-1000 AD) and the arrival of Europeans (1550 AD). This is complemented by a regional baseline of 45 archaeological faunal and plant resources. Based on our results, three dietary patterns can be identified over time (from 1000 to 1850 AD): one oriented towards marine resources, another towards C 3 plants and terrestrial protein, and the last focused on a mixed consumption of C 3 and C 4 plants, complemented by intake of terrestrial and marine protein. These cases show significant intra-zone consistency over time, and high inter-zone variability. This heterogeneous situation is evident even in synchronous individuals ascribed to the same cultural-historical unit or inhabiting the same geographical macro-zone (valley, coast, islands). It also contrasts with results from adjacent areas to Southern Chile. This highlights the complex diet variability that existed in societies which otherwise appear to be extremely alike in their archaeological record (burials, pottery) and ethnographic features (language, rituals). A transition from cereal-based agriculture to pastoralism in North China occurred around 3600 cal yr B.P., and corresponded to Northern Hemisphere cooling and the onset of an arid climate over North China. In this paper, we investigate the mechanisms for the ~3600 cal yr B.P. climate transition that may have triggered this change in Chinese civilization based on a compilation of 33 high-resolution paleoclimate records spanning the 4000–3000 cal yr B.P. interval. Results show that North and South China experienced a meridional dipole pattern of the climate change. From 4000 to 3600 cal yr B.P., the region north of 30°N was wet and the region south of 30°N was dry, then from 3600 to 3000 cal yr B.P., the pattern reversed with a drier north and a wetter south. We found that this climate transition was related to the onset of a more El Niño-like state in the tropical Pacific Ocean after ~3600 cal yr B.P., which resulted in more precipitation in South China but less precipitation in North China. Climate in the marginal monsoon areas of North China deteriorated, becoming more cold and arid, and pastoralism replaced cereal agriculture as the dominant mode of subsistence. Abstract The arrival of Europeans in the New World, and the rapid deforestation for agriculture and settlement that shortly followed, resulted in large and rapid increases in soil erosion and sediment aggradation. In Australia, as in parts of North America and other New World sites, this event dates to the last several centuries of the Common Era, a period for which we have surprisingly little historical or scientific data capable of informing debates on the impact of European colonisation on soils and erosion. These research themes and debates were central to the work of Karl Butzer, who undertook field and archival research in Australia to test existing ideas of the timing and magnitude of landscape response to colonisation. In this paper, the work and impact of Butzer in Australia is reviewed as part of ongoing scholarship on the impact of colonisation on landscapes to which Butzer contributed (Butzer and Helgren, 2005). Geomorphic records of soil erosion and historical accounts of land use and impact from eastern Australia show that European settlement, land clearing, and agriculture resulted in rapid, and often severe, increases in erosion in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, mirroring the experience of anthropogenic soil loss experienced in other parts of the world. It is postulated that the geomorphic response to European settlement in Australia is more complex than researchers have previously noted that, in some contexts, continues to influence catchment processes decades and centuries after colonisation. Assessing the integrity and resolution of archaeological sites in sandy environments is a key issue for understanding site formation processes in hunter-gatherer's contexts. A case study from the lower course of the Colorado River, at the eastern Pampa-Patagonian transition (Argentina) is presented here. The studied area is characterized by a sand dune relief that is superimposed upon ancient fluvial and marine environments. The sites date to between c. 2000 and 250 14C yr BP (late Holocene) and they are mostly located in eolian contexts. The objective of this paper is to understand environmental dynamics and the site formation processes that operated in archaeological sites of the late Holocene through the integration of geoarchaeological and taphonomic information. The obtained results allowed the identification of site formation processes related to the different environmental settings (coast, ancient delta and inland). However, general patterns that relate some taphonomic effects as root action and weathering with landscape processes such as pedogenesis at an areal scale were also recognized. Despite the varied and highly dynamic environmental conditions of this arid-semiarid area, archaeological contexts with good degrees of resolution and integrity were recognized. Abstract Late Holocene climate change is an important issue in global change research, because of its close relationship with human societal development. The Horqin sandy land is an important area for early dryland agriculture development. However, the role that climatic factors, especially temperature and precipitation, played in regional agriculture development is still unclear. This paper presents a high-resolution multi-proxy palaeomoisture record spanning 4300–1000 cal. yr BP derived from sequential aeolian sediments of the Liuhutun section on the northeastern frontier of the Horqin sandy land, northeast China. The 2.96 m section, with a chronology based on seven radiocarbon dates, was analyzed for sediment grain-size, CaCO 3 content, organic matter content and environmental magnetic parameters. The results indicate that 4300–3800 cal. yr BP was a humid period with a drying trend; that 3800–1700 cal. yr BP was generally dry; and that 1700–1000 cal. yr BP was sub-humid. It is clear that the regional climate was responsive to East Asian monsoonal circulation driven by variations in Northern Hemisphere summer insolation. We further investigate the relationship between climate change and regional agriculture development by comparing moisture records with regional temperature and subsistence strategy changes inferred from previous studies. The results suggest that high temperature and moderate precipitation may have facilitated agricultural development during the Lower Xiajiadian period (ca. 4000–3400 yr BP). Owing to the drought-tolerant and thermophilic phenological properties of millets, which are major crops of northeast China, temperature may have played a more important role in regional agriculture than precipitation. Abstract: Assessment of ongoing relative sea level rise in NW-Europe for individual tidal basins is wanted and, consequently, a variety of methods must be available for investigations under different local conditions. The methodology presented in this paper is based on OSL (optically stimulated luminescence) dating of tidal flat sedimentary records. It uses a conceptual model that assumes that tidal flat clastic sediments record small changes in sea level trend. These changes are in NW-Europe superimposed on the general rising trend of the near-field sea level during the late Holocene (last ∼3500 years). The dating approach can be complemented by 210Pb-dating for the most recent period (last ∼100 years). This combination has the potential to bridge between contrasting short-term and long-term data about sea level change. The paper describes the model for sedimentation and the dating technique. The accuracy of the method is assessed at a test site on the East Frisian coast (North Sea, German Bight), for which independent sea level data achieved by archaeological and biostratigraphical means were available. In this paper, we undertake a high-resolution palynological analysis of a sediment core covering the last 1500 years obtained from Lake Ayakum in the northern Tibetan Plateau, to improve the understanding of regional climate fluctuations and their driving mechanisms. The pollen spectra are dominated by herbaceous species such as Artemisia , Chenopodiaceae, Cyperaceae and Poaceae, which grew in various alpine desert settings. Four pollen assemblage zones are identified using stratigraphically constrained cluster analysis, representing climate history at different stages. The Artemisia /Chenopodiaceae (A/C) ratio and axis score of the first principal component are used to infer regional moisture conditions and reveal a temporal pattern that is consistent with various records from central Asia. The source of Cyperaceae pollen is mainly from marsh wetlands distributed around the lake, which responded sensitively to the lake level fluctuations. In contrast, arboreal pollen is mainly a long-distance transported component, reflecting changes in regional vegetation. Our findings show that the northern Tibetan Plateau experienced relatively wet conditions during the Dark Age Cold Period and the Little Ice Age, while relatively dry conditions occurred during the Medieval Warm Period and the last two centuries. Fluctuations in moisture levels are broadly consistent with moisture records elsewhere in western China, and show a good correlation with phase changes of the North Atlantic Oscillation. High-latitude permafrost peatlands are sensitive to global warming, and understanding their paleohydrological evolution is critical for assessing future hydrological and environmental changes. This paper presents a diatom record from a peat deposit covering the past 3300 years to reconstruct the moisture and acidity conditions in the Tuqiang permafrost peatland in the northern Greater Khingan Mountains of northeast China. Our findings are integrated with previously published records of plant macrofossils, palynology, and geochemistry from the same profile. From 3300 to 2800 cal yr BP, planktonic and benthic diatoms were equally abundant, indicating relatively high moisture conditions, while the low abundance of acidophilous diatoms reflects relatively high pH during this interval. Pollen data show dominance by sedges with input from the surrounding Pinus forest, while LOI data and lithology suggest that the site was a non-peat accumulating wetland. During the period 2800–1100 cal yr BP, the dominance of planktonic diatoms indicates a wetter local environment, concurrent with the dominance of peat-forming sedges (Eriophorum), indicating the development of a peatland. Between 1100 and 500 cal yr BP, a short-lived increase in acidophilous diatoms (Eunotia) marks a decrease in pH. Since 500 cal yr BP, the dominance of benthic diatoms reflects a drier environment, while a vegetation shift from an Eriophorum -dominated rich fen to a Sphagnum- and Ericaceae-dominated poor fen. An increase in Eunotia diatoms prior to the Sphagnum peak may indicate that diatoms are more sensitive to local acidified habitats than moss. Peatland development in the northern Greater Khingan Mountains was likely induced by the onset of a cooler and wetter climate starting at approximately 2800 cal yr BP, a scenario supported by regional paleoclimate records. Since 700 cal yr BP, the peatland has been affected by both anthropogenic activities and climatic changes, as a drying climate and intensified human activities around the study area reduced diatom species diversity and peat accumulation. The Pyrenean Lake Montcortès sediments hold the longest continuous and absolutely varve-dated record of the Mediterranean region, encompassing the last three millennia, from the Late Bronze Age to the present. The reconstruction of vegetation and landscape dynamics during this time period has advanced gradually, following the progress of absolute dating by varve counting, and has been progressively published and updated in a number of papers dealing with specific time intervals at different temporal resolutions. This paper synthesizes all these studies in a single composite paleoecological sequence constrained by a single age-depth varve model. The final resolution of this reconstruction is bidecadal, on average, but some periods have been resolved at quasidecadal (Middle Ages) and subdecadal (Modern Age to present) resolutions. The study is focused on the timing of anthropization and the further development of vegetation under climatic and anthropogenic drivers until the shaping of present landscapes. An additional advantage of Montcortès is that the local history of the Pallars region, where the lake is located, is well documented and can be easily correlated with the paleoecological record. Contrary to former interpretations of general landscape anthropization of the Pyrenees during the Middle Ages, the Montcortès catchment was irreversibly transformed by anthropic activities at the beginning of the Iron Age (ca. 750-650 BCE). From this point, the catchment underwent successive transformations due to varied human uses (fire, grazing, cereal cultivation, weed/ruderal plant expansions, hemp cultivation/retting), which have been related to the different cultural phases and sociopolitical changes documented in the local historical records. The regional forests, dominated by Pinus and Quercus , experienced four main clearance events (RD) during the Iron Age (RD1; ca. 300 BCE), the Roman Period (RD2; ca. 300 CE), the Middle Ages (RD3; ca. 1000 CE) and the Modern Age (RD4; ca. 1800 CE). The detailed trends of the last two deforestation events and their causes could be studied at a decadal resolution, which significantly improved interpretation quality in ecological terms. The potential effects of climatic changes and the eventual interactions with human activities on catchment vegetation and regional forests throughout the record have also been discussed. The Montcortès record has been compared with other records at local (Pyrenees), regional (Iberian Peninsula) and biome (Mediterranean) scales. Locally and regionally, anthropization times and further ecological trends showed significant heterogeneity according to elevation, biogeographical patterns and cultural trends. The most significant coincidence is an intensification of human pressure, as noted in forest clearing and extensive land use, during several phases of the Middle Ages. At the Mediterranean level, the Montcortès record emerges as a unique sequence for the western sector of this biome that should be complemented with similar archives from the central and eastern Mediterranean. The most promising candidates for such sequences are discussed on the basis of available Mediterranean varved records. In this paper we identify changes in the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) intensity during the late Holocene as revealed by palaeohydrological proxies in the fluvial archives of western India. Proxy indices, including the geomorphological, sedimentological, geochemical and biological evidence along with chronology have been employed to highlight the trend in ISM intensity over the late Holocene. It is inferred that on a longer timescale, the Indian Summer Monsoon weakened during the late Holocene however; short pulses of ameliorated monsoon occurred around 3, 1.6 and 0.3 cal ka BP. Clustering of flood events is seen to occur at 3–2.8, 2.2–1.6, 1.3–1.1 and 0.65–0.2 cal ka BP not necessarily coinciding with strengthening of the ISM. Palaeoflood data with regard to the ISM variability shows that the two most prevalent flood events at 0.5 and 1.7 cal ka BP coincide with the weak monsoon period/climatic transition in this region. The occurrence of high magnitude flood events during weak monsoon periods is also reflected in the modern flood and rainfall data. It is surmised that high magnitude flood events may represent peak monsoon periods however, cannot be singularly considered as indicators for enhanced monsoon conditions in a region. This paper presents relatively high-resolution geochemical records spanning the past 4000 cal yr BP obtained from the lacustrine sediments of Poyang Lake in central China. The variations in the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) are traced using the K/Na, Ti/Na, Al/K, kaolinite/illite and clay/feldspar ratios, together with the chemical index of alteration (CIA), as indicators of chemical weathering. During the last 4000 years, the proxy records of chemical weathering from Poyang Lake exhibit an overall enhanced trend, consistent with regional hydrological changes in previous independent records. Further comparisons and analyses demonstrate that regional moisture variations in central China is inversely correlated with the EASM intensity, with weak EASM generating high precipitation in central China. Our data reveal three intervals of dramatically dry climatic conditions (i.e., ca. 4000–3200 cal yr BP, ca. 2800–2400 cal yr BP, and ca. 500–200 cal yr BP). A period of weak chemical weathering, related to cold and dry climatic conditions, occurred during the Little Ice Age (LIA), whereas more intense chemical weathering, reflecting warm and humid climatic conditions, was recorded during the Medieval Warm Period (MWP). Besides, an intensification of chemical weathering in Poyang Lake during the late Holocene agrees well with strong ENSO activity, suggesting that moisture variations in central China may be predominantly driven by ENSO variability. This paper focuses on past woodland changes and land uses in an ancient mining area of the Eastern Pyrenees (Ariège, France). The area discussed is located at the western entrance of the Vicdessos, a valley with significant steel production, and it is crossed by the road used from the 14th c. to the end of the 18th c. for the iron-charcoal exchange with the forest Province of Couserans. The introduction of this singular exchange and the silver ore mining history of this border area raise the question of their impact on forest cover changes and changes in human practices and their link with anthropisation processes. To deal with this issue, we put in place an interdisciplinary approach involving archaeology, charcoal analysis, ecological history and geochemistry. The archaeological investigations and fourteen radiocarbon ages allowed characterising and dating of mining and charcoal-making remains. They situate the emergence of metal ore mining during the Second Iron Age and charcoal making activity between the 15th and 17th c. The geochemical analysis of 9 galena samples showed some different isotopic signatures between ores extracted in ancient times and those mined during the modern period. The charcoal analysis of (i) 2442 charcoals from 31 charcoal kilns (ii) 500 from one pedoarchaeological pit excavated in a waste heap related to firesetting, and (iii) 250 from two pedoanthracological sampling points carried out in the charcoal burning forest, permits a detailed reconstruction of the woodland cover changes from the Second Iron Age to the 19th c. Furthermore, the combination of data from different disciplines allows for a long-term reconstruction of human practices history and woodland management for different uses. In particular, the results show the transformation of the fir-beech forest, still dominated by fir around the turn of the Roman era, into pure beech wood managed on northern slopes for human daily needs, occasionally mining, lumber and mainly charcoal production until the 19th c. The elimination of fir dates back to the 17th c. This assumes the end of lumber activities in that period. Pedoanthracological and palynological data suggest that southern slopes, progressively deforested since the Bronze Age, were entirely devoted to permanent agropastoral activities probably at least since the end of the medieval period. This paper demonstrates the decisive role of natural preconditions on the formation of large late Holocene sea ingressions in peaty coastal plains along the North Sea’s southern shores. Geological and archaeological evidence shows that these sea ingressions (expansion of new tidal systems) were mainly caused by land subsidence, which occurred due to intensified agricultural use of artificially drained peatlands since the Late Iron Age (250–12 BC). This made the coastal plain sensitive to storm-surge ingression through weak spots, e.g., at the location of existing creeks, in the coastline. Using The Netherlands as a case study, we show that natural preconditions (i.e., the geological setting at the time of ingression) played a key role in the pacing and extent of tidal area expansion. Ingressive tidal systems eventually reached most far inland in coastal segments with wide peaty back-barrier plains. In contrast, sea ingression formation was hampered in coastal segments with well-developed natural ingression-protecting geomorphic features (e.g., beach-barriers, supratidal levees). Feedback mechanisms, such as additional peat subsidence by loading of sediment imported into the new tidal area, caused further tidal volume increase and created accommodation space for tidal deposits. These combined effects caused irreversible sea ingression over large areas that consequently became unsuitable for habitation for many centuries. Improved understanding of such sea-ingression mechanisms and their facilitating conditions are essential for the assessment of the sensitivity of many densely populated coastal plains, which experience major human-induced subsidence, eventually leading to coastal plain drowning. The marine shelves of passive margins receive huge amount of terrestrial organic carbon (OC) exported from adjacent terrestrial ecosystems. Long-term sequestration of terrestrial OC into marine sediments plays an important role in the global carbon cycle on a range of timescales. However, our knowledge of factors affecting the fate of terrestrial OC in continental-marginal settings is incomplete, with ongoing debates regarding rates of degradation during transport and burial. In this paper, we employ analyses of total OC and its stable isotope (δ13C), terrestrial biomarkers and mineral surface area in sediment core 39-A obtained from mud-rich regions of the inner shelf of the East China Sea to investigate terrestrial OC burial history over the last 3000 years. Analysis of terrestrial lipid biomarker and terrestrial OC calculated based on a δ13C-binary mixing model shows increasing trends since ∼1400 yr BP, accompanied by a synchronous increase of terrestrial OC preservation rate. By compiling terrestrial OC records from mud-rich regions of the East China Sea inner shelf, we propose that the most reasonable explanation is the intensification of the East Asian Winter Monsoon. This resulted in a strengthening of coastal currents, which accelerated lateral transport speed (thereby shortening oxygen exposure time) of Changjiang (Yangtze River)-derived terrestrial OC towards the deposition site, resulting in greater terrestrial OC preservation. Moreover, we also found delayed responses of terrestrial OC burial to the East Asian Winter Monsoon in the middle and southern part of the Min-Zhe coastal mud region, implying that the transport of terrestrial OC towards this region took place on a centennial-time scale. The aim of this paper is to discuss hunter–gatherers' logistical mobility strategies in Central-Western Santa Cruz province during the last 2500 years BP, in a context of human adaptations to semi-desert conditions. The approach to the archaeological record is focused on integrating three independent lines of evidence: technology, zooarchaeological and anthracological analysis. Logistical mobility will be addressed focusing on two main aspects: resources transportation and variability of archaeological contexts. The observed variability has allowed shedding light on the use of the category “logistical” used to describe plateaus. Fossil pollen and spore diversity in marine sediment cores from the coasts off SW Kalimantan and NE Java (Java Sea) as well as modern pollen assemblages collected off West Java in the SE Indian Ocean in a marine sediment trap are documented in this paper. In total, photographic images of 138 pollen and 41 spores including 14 pollen and 32 unidentified spore types are presented in morphological order. Illustrated pollen and spore taxa list may help pollen and spore identification of future palynological investigations focused on the reconstruction of past vegetation, climate and environment dynamics in SE Asia. This paper shows the preliminary results of the zooarchaeological analysis of Dupuy Rockshelter (La Toma, San Luis Province, Argentina). This rock shelter has evidence of Late Holocene (Last Millennium) human occupation dating from 340 ± 40 BP. Some species, including Lama guanicoe and Ozotoceros bezoarticus , were exploited and their bones were used as raw material to make instruments. The zooarchaeological analysis is complemented by geological and phytoarchaological evidence which indicates a humid environment during the Holocene and a mixed diet that included vegetables. This paper presents the analysis of the ichtyoarchaeological record from Los Bananos site (Goya, Corrientes, Argentine). The aim of this study is to render a first evaluation to the role played by fish in subsistence during subsequent occupations of the site. The site is located in the alluvial plain of Middle Paraná River, beside Paraná Miní creek, and it has provided new information about pottery and lithic technology, subsistence, chronology ( 14 C), site formation processes, etc. Bones from Los Bananos have been divided into three assemblages (LB1, LB2 and LB3), according to associated cultural materials. The pre-Hispanic populations that occupied this area by the end of the Late Holocene based their subsistence in hunting, gathering and fishing. Also, the makers of a distinctive ceramic ware associated with LB1 assemblage (related to Goya-Malabrigo entity - lato sensu -), relied on small-scale horticulture. Preceding materials of the other sets (LB2 and LB3) do not present necessary characteristics for cultural association as shown in LB1. The assemblages will be discussed in sequence of their deposition; and compared with results from other related sites. The results of zooarchaeological and taphonomic analysis of the faunal remains suggest that fish was an important resource in LB1. While from LB3 analysis, we will see that fish constituted a complementary resource in the diet. Thus, we can infer that, the role of animals in the diet of the site's prehistoric inhabitants changed during the time deposits were laid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the first high-resolution Holocene stalagmite record of Taiwan from Jianfei Cave (22°50.873 N; 120°21.255 E) in Dagangshan Mountain, South Taiwan. The 13.6-cm long stalagmite (DGS-1) has been dated by AMS 14 C dating, spanning from AD 700 to AD 1933. The δ 18 O, δ 13 C and XRF scanned elemental profiles reveal interannual variations in climate and environmental conditions, with light δ 18 O and δ 13 C excursions reflecting wet climate and better vegetation coverage under stronger East Asia Summer Monsoon (EASM). Dark layers in DGS-1 containing high Fe, Mn and Sr contents were formed during dry episodes. Five periods with different climate regimes and vegetation conditions can be identified in the DGS-1 record: Period I (AD 700–1200) and Period V (AD 1810–1933) had warm and wet climates with good vegetation coverage. A drying trend probably corresponding to the switch from El Niño-like to La Niña-like oceanic condition occurred during Period II (AD 1200–1400). Cold but relatively wet climates with good vegetation coverage were prevailed during Period III (AD 1400–1610), whereas cold and dry climates with poor vegetation coverage were dominated during Period IV (AD 1610–1810). Based on the rainfall record of Tainan since AD 1897 and the stalagmite record, we found that stronger total solar irradiation (TSI) resulting in strong EASM produces heavy rainfall in South Taiwan on interannual-to-decadal scales; and vice versa. The 117-yr instrumental rainfall record of Tainan showed that rainfall in Tainan decreased during April-to-June and strongly increased during July-to-September in many La Niña years (positive SOI and negative Niño 3.4). This may be because weaker Meiyu rainfall but stronger tropical Equatorial Pacific cyclones (or typhoon) under La Niña condition. Thus, it is better to use seasonal rainfall for detecting relationship between Tainan rainfall and ENSO. The evolution of the monsoonal climate in the Indian Himalayan region remains poorly understood due to the sparse coverage of paleoclimatic datasets. In the present paper, elemental concentrations and grain size parameters are measured for a radiocarbon-dated sediment core retrieved from Shilloi Lake (Nagaland, India) to understand climate variability over north-eastern India during the past two thousand years. The end-member modeling of grain-size distribution along with the elemental composition and ratios (Mg/Al, Sr/Al, Ti/Al) are used to identify changes in clastic input and authigenic carbonate precipitation as well as lake level changes. In addition, the REE distribution pattern and elemental ratios (U/Th, Europium anomaly – Eu*) are evaluated to understand provenance and redox conditions. We identify two main hydrological events: (i) wet conditions during ~1900 to ~1000 cal yrs. BP characterised by high clastic sediment input (as indicated by increased Mg, Al, Mg/Al) and dominant contribution of fine-grained sediments as represented by end member (EM) 1 in zone 1, and (ii) an increase in aridity as signified by decreasing detrital content and increased coarse-grained sediments (EM3) in zone 2 (~1000 cal yrs. BP to present). The regional comparison of paleoclimatic records from NE Himalaya and central India shows an opposing trend in precipitation patterns. However, a synthesis of hydrological proxy records from the tropical Pacific region does not point to an active role of ENSO in the study region. The study of technological organization associated with hunter-gatherers groups has been one of the topics of greatest interest in the archaeological research of the Pampean region. In this sense, the aims of this paper were to interpret the role of the Cerro Largo Formation chert in the technological practices of human groups and to discuss how this rock was used and transported in the center of the Humid Pampa sub-region during the Late Holocene. We will present the techno-morphological analysis on chert artifacts recovered from Boca de la Sierra workshop in order to identify how this stone was used at the beginning of its exploitation. Then, we will compare and discuss diverse chaînes opérotoires on chert found in archaeological sites located at different distances from the sources. In Boca de la Sierra workshop, we recorded three initial forms of exploitation of the nodules. The Cerro Largo Formation chert had been transported from this workshop to other sites in the form of different kinds of partially and/or totally decorticated cores, nodules, large flakes, and possibly tools. In those sites located at a short distance from the quarry workshops (Empalme Querandíes 1 and Laguna La Barrancosa 2) we observed complete chaînes opérotoires organized through débitage , with low production of standardized blank and a high frequency of external flakes used as blank for the manufacture of different kinds of tools. In those sites located at a long distance from the quarry workshops (Laguna La Larga and Laguna Seca 2), we recorded chaînes opérotoires developed almost entirely. Even though some expedient tools are recorded, the greatest maximization in the use of Cerro Largo Formation chert is remarkable. The high proportion of standardized, small and shaped tools, the identification of exhausted cores, the use of a bipolar technique, and the presence of resharpening flake edges show a curated technological strategy. Finally, the presence of complete chaînes opérotoires close to the hills allow us to infer direct access to the outcrops and an easy acquisition of chert; whereas the features observed in the other sites indicate that the chert acquisition was done by specific trips or by social exchange and interaction networks with other groups. This paper focuses on Late Holocene coastal occupations of hunter–gatherers that inhabited the northern steppes of Grande Island of Tierra del Fuego. Available archaeological data produced by our previous research in the Argentine portion of the island located north of San Sebastian Cape is discussed from a regional taphonomy perspective. Our approach is based on the characterization of the main taphonomic modes recognized in the region. Preservational and other patterns for bones and lithics are presented and discussed. The main objective of this paper is to describe the late Holocene behaviour of rivers using an interdisciplinary approach combining fluvial geomorphology and subfossil trunk dendrochronology. The subfossil wood material collected along the rivers was investigated for dendrometric and dendrochronologic parameters. The research methods in these fields helped us to understand the effect of the fluvial environment on riparian trees and their records and helped in reconstructing the riparian palaeoenvironment. The study area consists of two rivers with different typologies but comparable sizes: the Moldova River, which features a braided to wandering channel in its lower reach, and the Siret River, which features a sinuous-meandering channel. Along the 100-km-long floodplain of the former and the 144-km-long floodplain of the latter, we found and sampled 77 subfossil trunks, of which 26 were subjected to 14 C dating. The resulting data consist of floodplain facies mapping data, electric resistivity measurements, absolute dates, and dendrometric and dendrochronologic data. The results indicate that during a 100-year period, the two rivers were sensitive to climate change and anthropogenic effects, particularly a narrowing of the active channel by 76% in the braided channel and 38% in the sinuous-meandering channel. During the past 3300–3000 YBP, the Moldova River maintained its braided style, whereas the sinuous-meandering style has been characteristic of the Siret River for the previous 6800–4600 YBP. The two distinct fluvial environments are recorded in the dendrometric structure of the trunks buried in the channel-fill sediments. The braided fluvial environment was more effective in uprooting riparian trees and incorporating them in the floodplain deposits, whereas the sinuous-meandering style of stream effectively buried tree trunks in lateral accretion lobes. Absolute and dendrochronologic dating allowed for the reconstruction of timelines of the felling of the trees and estimates of the magnitude of the responsible hydrological event. The flood events on the Siret River with a recurrence interval of 200 years ( Q max ~ 2500–2800 m 3 /s) were those most effective in destroying riparian forests, and the events on the Moldova floods with a 100-year recurrence interval ( Q max ~ 1200–1400 m 3 /s) were the most effective. Dendrochronology allowed for identification of wet phases (i.e., 3500–2900 YBP, 2200–2075 YBP, and 1000–800 YBP) and dry phases (e.g., 3200–3150 or 2775–2700 YBP, 1400 YBP). This paper presents a new palynological record from a 146 cm long finely laminated sediment core obtained in 2009 from the deep-water meromictic Lake Shira (54°30′38″N, 90°12″09′E; ca. 353 m a.s.l.) situated in the Khakassian steppe region of southern Siberia between the rivers Ob' and Yenisei. The area is rich in lakes and represents an exceptionally well preserved sequence of Bronze and Iron Age archeological cultures. Little is known about the changes in vegetation and climate of the region during the Holocene. The palynological analysis of the core allows us to partly fill up this gap in current knowledge. The record of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs presented here covers the past 2450 year interval with an average resolution of 22 years. The results obtained support the interpretation that the late Holocene vegetation changes around Lake Shira are mainly associated with large-scale atmospheric circulation processes controlling the regional water balance rather than with human activities. An attempt to trace human impact in the pollen assemblages provides no clear evidence for anthropogenic activity, except for the last few decades since ca. 1955, though the region has a long history of mobile pastoralists. For explanation of decadal-scale changes in the regional vegetation cover, the Artemisia /Chenopodiaceae (A/C) pollen ratio proved to be a reliable indicator of effective moisture availability. Using available fossil and published instrumental data our study suggests a link between the North Atlantic warmer/colder temperatures and higher/lower atmospheric precipitation (or moisture availability) in southern Siberia at multi-decadal to centennial scales. Since the 19th century, it has been proposed that the wide geographic distribution of the Guaraní indigenous populations in large areas of South America was the result of prehistoric movements of large numbers of people through the main rivers of the La Plata Basin and the Brazilian coastline. However, no detailed spatial and temporal analysis has been carried out with the dated Guaraní archaeological sites of the different zones of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. This is one of the reasons why some of the main ideas about this past population expansion still lack empirical validation. This paper presents a study on the geographic and temporal distribution of the Guaraní archaeological sites in the La Plata Basin and the Atlantic coast of southern Brazil. The overall purpose is to contribute to understanding the Guaraní expansion using the analysis of two basic archaeological variables: space and time. Based on available numerical dates ( 14 C and thermoluminescence) and the application of GIS software, potential dispersion routes are discussed. To date, more than 1100 archaeological sites assigned to the Guaraní, along with almost 250 numerical dates were analyzed. With this data, it was possible to elaborate a Dispersion Routes Model and a Temporal Visualization Model, which enabled identification of the sequence of population dispersal, with two main expansion pulses, throughout nearly two millennia of Guaraní movements across the South American Lowlands. This paper summarizes and discusses the main results achieved over three decades of research on paleodemographic aspects of Late Holocene hunter-gatherers in Northwestern Santa Cruz (Argentina). Research has been guided by a model of regional settlement that proposes that, as a result of the progressive aridization process recorded in Patagonia during the Late Holocene, human groups would have reduced their residential mobility and concentrated their settlements in low altitude basins with water availability, such as Lake Cardiel and Lake Salitroso. Paleodemographic questions derived from the model relate to population regional continuity and dynamics and were tested using several lines of research at regional and local scales. The assessment of the chronological information and temporal trends of the archaeological record at the regional level allowed for a coarse grain paleodemographic approach, and acted as a mean to support hypotheses related to changes in mobility and land use strategies. Building on this, several lines of bioarchaeological evidence were used to address paleodemographic aspects of the model, including temporal, distributional, and compositional studies of the mortuary record, isotopic, morphometric and DNA analyses and the sex and age structure of the skeletal samples recovered in Lake Salitroso basin. Results point to a biological and cultural population continuity in the region during the Late Holocene. Tropical peatlands are an important carbon reservoir; however, they are vulnerable to climate change, fire events, and human disturbances, and may become a significant carbon source if degraded. In this paper, we investigated the late Holocene record of vegetation change, peatland evolution, and C accumulation based on analysis of a sediment core through a Mauritia-flexuosa palm dominated swamp (locally called " aguajal ") in the Madre de Dios region in southern Peru to better understand tropical peatland dynamics. Sedimentation commenced within shallow water, ponded on an impervious substrate, perhaps within an abandoned river channel or oxbow lake (1380–820 cal yr BP) located adjacent to a steep escarpment with terra firme (upland) rainforest above and lateral to floodplain forests. This was followed by the development of marsh (820–640 cal yr BP). A closed-canopy Mauritia flexuosa -dominated palm swamp was subsequently established (640300calyr BP) which later changed into an open canopy and mixed Mauritia - Hedyosmum palm swamp (300 cal yr BP to present). Two major changes in peat and C accumulation rates were observed: (1) onset of peat and C accumulation at 820 cal yr BP and (2) decrease of peat and C accumulation after 520 cal yr BP. Comparisons of our results with palaeoecological records from aguajales in northern Peru suggest that the dynamics were different in this region. The peat and C accumulation rates in our study core in southern Peru were ca. 4 mm yr−1 and ca. 200 g m−2 yr−1 faster, similar to a few sites in northern Peru. Aguajales in Madre de Dios region in southern Peru are an important carbon sink. This paper provides an important archive of the largest paleoflood event along the Gold Gorge of the upper Hanjiang River, with a review of regional extraordinary flood magnitudes using historical, gauged, and paleoflood datasets. Paleoflood slackwater deposit (SWD) was identified using the sedimentological criteria and high-resolution physicochemical indexes. End-member model demonstrates the paleoflood SWD was dominated by sand component. Optical chronology indicates the paleoflood event was dated to 1000–900 a BP, corresponding to the North Song Dynasty (AD 960–1127). Paleoflood magnitudes derived from one-dimensional unsteady model vary between 23,000 and 34,000 m3/s. The paleoflood data provide a good representation of extraordinary flood event with a 10,000-years return period and greatly improve current flood frequency estimations. Moreover, the envelope curve for extraordinary floods was first established as Q = 50D0.65 and the paleoflood peak discharges are approximately 2–2.5 times of the largest gauged floods within the catchment. These results provide an upper limit of the maximum flood magnitudes along the upper Hanjiang River and also expand our understanding of rare and large magnitude floods in the middle Yangtze River valley. Abstract: This paper presents a stratigraphical and geomorphological analysis supported with geochronological dating aiming to reconstruct the Late Holocene lake-level fluctuations and paleohydrological history of Lake Hayk. This lake (23km2 in surface) is located in the eastern side of the northern Ethiopia highlands, at an altitude of around 2000m above sea level. Along the northern margin of the lake, which is mainly characterized by steep rocky slopes, the studied succession consists of colluvial and stromatolitic deposits. Along the southern margin, which is characterized by a wide coastal plain drained by the main watercourse feeding the lake (the Ankarka River), the study deposits are mainly palustrine, deltaic and fluvial in origin. Geomorphological and sedimentological data, integrated with a radiocarbon chronology, highlighted that during the last 3500years the lake was affected by three main highstand phases, which occurred at about 3250–3000, 2600–950 and 650–160cal yrs BP, respectively. These highstands are documented by aggradation of siliciclastic systems both along the southern and northern margins, whereas isotope data highlight that most of the stromatolitic deposits developed during phases of intense evaporation. This peculiar feature could be differently explained: i) stromatolite growth was triggered by rapid lacustrine rises, but mainly occurred during the long-lasting lacustrine falls; ii) stromatolite developed during tectonic-induced transgressions, which occurred during phases of intense evaporation. Despite the possible effects of local tectonics, the Lake Hayk record shows a good correlation with those of several late Holocene lakes of East Africa lakes (Naivasha, Tanganyika, Victoria, Turkana, Abhè, Ziway-Shala, Bosumtwi and Abyiata), highlighting that it can be considered as a suitable climatic proxy for late Holocene time span. In particular, by both siliciclastic and stromatolitic deposits occurring in the uppermost part of the sedimentary succession record high-frequency oscillations, which have been ascribed to three main droughts that occurred during the Little Ice Age. Abstract: This paper presents the late Holocene vegetation and fire history record from Parque Provincial Cruce Caballero, Misiones, NE Argentina (26° 30′ 55.35″ S, 53° 59′ 44.73″ W). The pollen and charcoal content of the 194cm deep sediment core dating to ca. 1840calyr BP permitted the recognition of three distinct zones. Zone CC-1 (before ca. 1810calyr BP) was characterised by a forest dominated by Myrtaceae that also included other forest taxa like Alchornea, Trema and Moraceae/Urticaceae. The presence of Zea mays (maize) pollen grains around 1840calyr BP suggests the presence of pre-Colombian groups in the region who practiced food-production. Zone CC-2 (ca. 1810 to ca. 40calyr BP) witnessed the establishment of an herbaceous wetland in the locality as evidenced by the formation of peat and the increase in wetland taxa, in particular the Cyperaceae, indicating the change to a wetter and less seasonal climate that appears to be coeval with pollen records and soil-depth profiles'' carbon isotope records documented in other regions of the southern Brazilian highlands during the late Holocene. The basal section of this zone also documents the arrival of Araucaria angustifolia trees to the region, the presence of maize, and a moderate increase in fires that could be related to more intense human activity in the region. The upper section of this zone shows a slight increase in A. angustifolia paralleled by a raise of other typical elements of mixed Araucaria forests like Clethra, Ilex, Myrsine and Podocarpus. Zone CC-3 (ca. 40calyr BP–today) shows a major increase in trees and ferns (particularly Osmunda) at the expense of sedges and grasses evidencing a local change from a wetland dominated herbaceous vegetation to the one dominated by arboreal taxa and ferns that exists today. This zone also shows a reduction in regional fires and the disappearance of local fires that seems to be associated to the creation of the Parque Provincial Cruce Caballero. Poaceae pollen percentages remained relatively low throughout the sequence indicating that the region did not support Campos (grassland) vegetation but was a forested landscape during the late Holocene. Interactions between human societies and the environment that they inhabit have been a controversial topic in archaeology for at least the past fifty years. Currently, modern theoretical approaches take this subject as a key issue in their research agenda. This paper presents a review of the main outcomes of several archaeological and multidisciplinary South American projects related to this theme. The case-studies discussed here are all located within arid settings, and can be grouped into three broad geographic areas: Puna (or Altiplano) of northwestern Argentina, Cuyo (west-central Argentina), and southern Patagonia. These regions cover a wide latitudinal range extending from 22° to 52° S. They were selected for comparison due to environmental similarities, and a common record of past climate impacts mainly related to the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA) and the Little Ice Age (LIA). Although the impacts of these climatic changes were locally heterogeneous in their intensity and the quality of the available information is regionally variable, they provide a base-line for comparison and supra-regional integration. The integration of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental data on this broad supra-regional spatial scale allows us to identify interesting historical trajectories associated with particular time periods. As an example, there are some spatial rearrangements of large populations during the MCA, in the three areas. Additionally, there are variable patterns in the changes associated with the different social contexts that impose specific demographic and economic constraints. Finally, this study sets the basis for new questions and provides a guide to the methodological and theoretical issues that we need to address in order to answer them. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Guadalquivir estuary is one of the most important in Europe. It is isolated from the sea by two important littoral spits (Doñana and La Algaida). Its sedimentary filling occurred as a result of deltaic contributions of the Guadalquivir River, giving rise to marshes primarily composed of mud deposits, among which a succession of sandy and shelly ridges can be found. The aim of this paper is to explain the genesis and evolution of these sandy and shelly ridges clarifying what types of ridges are found and their spatial distribution, identifying the processes responsible for their formation. These ridges extend in the form of long strands along the estuary, influencing its evolution during the Late Holocene. The geomorphologic and lithostratigraphic features of these ridges allow them to be defined as transgressive cheniers, regressive cheniers and laterally accreted ridges (spits), as components of the Guadalquivir estuary chenier plain complex. This chenier plain has the peculiarity of developing on a semi-enclosed shoreline, contrary to other chenier plains in the world, which develop on open coasts. In the Guadalquivir estuary the chenier plain formation is related to two relatively higher sea level (4200–2800 yr BP and 1400–1000 yr BP) during which high energy events occur (storms and tsunamis), that transgressed the large littoral spits. The Carrizosa (∼4000 yr BP) and Vetalengua (∼1400–1300 yr BP) spits have been formed across the inlet, and prograded landwards of the estuary. From here, several sequences of cheniers (mainly transgressive cheniers) associated with these events were formed. These cheniers form two groups: Las Nuevas (∼1100–1000 yr BP) and Marilópez (∼3000 yr BP), composed mainly of shells and shell fragments. These cheniers were constructed by waves which reworked the shells above estuarine levees, and led to their intense landward migration, thus explaining the peculiar, high inland position of the cheniers. Abstract: Landslides are common in the Polish part of the Flysch Carpathians. They are controlled mostly by lithology and tectonics of the bedrock and by climate. They are a major factor of slope transformation. Rock cliffs within deep landslides are overgrown with lichen thalli of the Rhizocarpon genus, so these cliffs may be dated using lichenometry. This paper presents the basics of lichenometry as well as its applications in geomorphological research in Poland and worldwide. Also presented are results of lichenometric dating of landslide–rockfall walls in the western part of the Polish Flysch Carpathians. The study helps to identify landslide episodes from historical times. The results obtained indicate that on the slopes studied there coexist several generations of landslide–rockfall forms of various age, including recent and active ones. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper deals with modern and ancient sedimentation in fresh water lakes and the marine shelf of the southern Marmara region, NW Anatolia, Turkey. Most of the information has been obtained from monitoring of suspended load discharged into two lakes (Manyas and Ulubat) in the last 45 years and from 8 to 11 m thick lacustrine sediments, in addition to radiocarbon-dated shelf sediments. This allows a holistic approach to the drainage basin denudation over time. The results show that the sedimentation rates in the lakes were low 0.22 cm year-1, from 4000 to 2000 years BP and then they increased (0.29 cm year-1) up to sub-recent times and reached 0.44 cm year-1 in the last century. It is suggested that deforestation created high rates of sedimentation in the basins and/or strong denudation of the region during the Late Holocene. This study also shows that for shallow freshwater lakes the calculation of sedimentation rates must include fine particles lost by the outlets and coarse-grained bed load deposited on their shores. In addition, a high rate of sedimentation has been created by short, but repetitive intense depositions. During the last century particularly during the last 45 years, the rate of sedimentation or denudation has increased dramatically in NW Turkey. Intercalated layers of sand and mud deposited in tide-dominated environments, usually of extreme tidal range, have been shown to exhibit sinusoidal variations in thickness, particularly of the sand layers. Tidal cyclicities derived from statistical analysis of these tidal rhythmites have been reported from several ancient and modern environments. Less attention has been paid to intertidal deposits which accumulated under a more moderate tidal range. This paper reports evidence of tidal cycles in a late Holocene laminated sequence infilling the former Wainway Channel on Walland Marsh which forms part of the Romney Marsh depositional complex on the southeast coast of England. The Wainway was a blind tidal channel which drained westwards into the estuary of the River Rother in Rye Bay where the current tidal range is around 6.7 m. The channel, and adjoining intertidal flats and salt marshes, were reclaimed in a piecemeal fashion through the 17th century in the study area. Autocorrelation and spectral analysis of variations in sand layer thickness up core reveals periodicities of 2, 5 to 8 and 11 to 13 layers/cycle which were interpreted as evidence of a diurnal inequality, neap–spring and lunar monthly cyclicity, respectively, within these sediments. Very short-term (several months) deposition rates inferred from the statistical analysis were equivalent to 1 m/yr. However, evidence of annual cycles preserved within these deposits indicate that the sedimentary record was not continuous, and that actual accumulation rates were approximately 0.5 m/yr on average over the longer term (several years). In the Central Atacama Desert (22°-24°S; henceforth CAD), around 3700 cal yrs BP, human economies begin to transition from relying mostly on hunting and gathering to increasingly incorporating horticulture and pastoralism became more intensive during the Late Intermediate Period (LIP; beginning at ca. 1050 cal yrs BP/900 AD). In this extreme environment, the well-being of past and present farming and herding communities is directly tied to water availability. The lack of proper paleoclimatic/environmental records in terms of their temporal/spatial resolution impeded evaluation whether sedentarization was synchronous, in some degree, with the amelioration of dry conditions recorded during the Late Holocene at millennial timescales. The present paper thus aims (1) to reconstruct the past environmental and climatic dynamics in the CAD (22°S) during the late Holocene at millennial to sub-centennial scales based on the pollen record of fossil rodent middens of Cuesta Chita site and; (2) to discuss their possible relationship to changes in cultivation and water management as seen at the archaeological sites of Topaín, Paniri and Turi, located in the Salado River basin. The CCH rodent midden pollen record reflects wetter (drier) than present phases around 4400, 3650, 3000, 2200–2100, 1600, 855–840, 520–450 and 100 cal yrs BP (980, 450-115 cal yrs BP). By the time that wetter-than-present conditions occurred in the CAD (Formative Period, 3500-1050 cal yrs BP), local communities had already developed small-scale horticultural practices, yet they did not develop extensive or intensive agricultural practices. Indeed, historical processes leading to economic transformations and the rapid adoption of intensive agriculture throughout the CAD after 1000 cal yrs BP occurred and were probably favored by wetter than present conditions, suggesting positive correlations between climatic and cultural change. However, these correlations are complex and non-deterministic. In fact, decreased moisture between 650 and 600 cal yrs BP in the Turi Basin was met by agropastoralists at Topaín with complex local strategies that included changing water management practices and significantly extending farmed lands. Similarly, the Topaín fields were abandoned during a period of much-wetter-than-present conditions. The varved sediments of Lake Montcortès (central pre-Pyrenees) have provided a continuous high-resolution record of the last ca. 3000 years. Previous chronological and sedimentological studies of this record have furnished detailed paleoenvironmental reconstructions. However, palynological studies are only available for the last millennium, when the landscape around the lake had already been transformed by humans. Therefore, the earlier vegetation of Montcortès and the history of its anthropogenic transformations remain unknown. This paper presents a palynological analysis of the interval between the Late Bronze Age and the Early Medieval period, aimed at recording preanthropic conditions, anthropization onset and the further landscape transformations. During the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1100 BCE to 770 BCE), the vegetation did not show any evidence of human impact. The decisive anthropogenic transformation of the Montcortès catchment vegetation and landscape started at the beginning of the Iron Age (770 BCE) and continued during Roman and Medieval times in the form of recurrent burning, grazing, cultivation, silviculture and hemp retting. Some intervals of lower human pressure were recorded, but the original vegetation never returned. The anthropization that took place during the Iron Age did not cause notable changes in the sediment yield to the lake, but a significant limnological shift occurred, as manifested in the initiation of varve formation, a process that has been continuous until today. Climatic shifts seem to have played a secondary role in influencing vegetation and landscape changes. These results contrast with previous inferences of low anthropogenic impact until the Medieval Period, at a regional level. In recent decades, numerous studies have focused on the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of coastal areas, with special emphasis on the detection of tsunami layers. These multidisciplinary investigations usually do not study the mineralogy of the environment as well as the underlying or overlying layers.This paper analyzes the whole-rock mineralogy and clay minerals contained in seven short cores obtained in the Doñana National Park (SW Spain) and deposited during the 5.000–1.500 cal. yr BP interval.The main purpose is to deduce the paleoenvironments from which the sedimentary facies present in them were formed and an approximation to the transport mechanisms involved in their formation. Results of X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the main minerals are phyllosilicates, quartz and calcite, with smectites and illite being the most abundant phyllosilicates. According to the whole-rock mineralogy and additional statistical procedures (correlation, cluster analysis), the main source of quartz is the erosion of Doñana spit, while the Guadalquivir river, its tributaries and the old lagoon have contributed mainly with smectite-rich phyllosilicates. On the contrary, waves, tides and high-energy events introduced illite and bioclasts in an old lagoon from the nearby shallow marine sectors. Consequently, the mineralogical analysis is revealed as an interesting tool for palaeoenvironmental reconstruction in this area, since it varies between different sedimentary environments. In addition, the combined study of whole-rock and clay mineralogy detects the tsunami layers and the provenance of their sediments in the studied cores.
