In this paper, the discontinuous Galerkin method for the positive and symmetric, linear hyperbolic systems is constructed and analyzed by using bilinear finite elements on a rectangular domain, and an O(h2)-order superconvergence error estimate is established under the conditions of almost uniform partition and the H3-regularity for the exact solutions. The convergence analysis is based on some superclose estimates derived in this paper. Finally, as an application, the numerical treatment of Maxwell equation is discussed and computational results are presented.

This paper considers a stabilized method based on the difference between a consistent and an under-integrated mass matrix of the pressure for the Stokes equations approximated by the lowest equal-order finite element pairs (i.e., the P1–P1 and Q1–Q1 pairs). This method only offsets the discrete pressure space by the residual of the simple and symmetry term at element level in order to circumvent the inf–sup condition. Optimal error estimates are obtained by applying the standard Galerkin technique. Finally, the numerical illustrations agree completely with the theoretical expectations.

In this paper the buckling and post-buckling of elastic structures taking into account large rotations are investigated using an asymptotic-numerical method. The critical points are detected by two different ways: first by a bifurcation indicator, second by analysing the poles of a Padé approximant. The first step of the post-buckling branch is computed starting from the bifurcation point and using an extended system. The remaining bifurcating branch is followed by the same algorithm as for the fundamental path. Several examples are tested to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this paper, we derive two stabilized discontinuous finite element formulations, symmetric and nonsymmetric, for the Stokes equations and the equations of the linear elasticity for almost incompressible materials. These methods are derived via stabilization of a saddle point system where the continuity of the normal and tangential components of the velocity/displacements are imposed in a weak sense via Lagrange multipliers. For both methods, almost all reasonable pair of discontinuous finite element spaces can be used to approximate the velocity and the pressure. Optimal error estimate for the approximation of both the velocity of the symmetric formulation and pressure in L2 norm are obtained, as well as one in a mesh-dependent norm for the velocity in both symmetric and nonsymmetric formulations.

In this paper, we develop both semi-discrete and fully discrete mixed finite element methods for modeling wave propagation in three-dimensional double negative metamaterials. Optimal error estimates are proved for Nédélec spaces under the assumption of smooth solutions. To our best knowledge, this is the first error analysis obtained for Maxwell's equations when metamaterials are involved.

This paper is devoted to the numerical simulation of two-dimensional stationary Bingham fluid flow by semismooth Newton methods. We analyze the modeling variational inequality of the second kind, considering both Dirichlet and stress-free boundary conditions. A family of Tikhonov regularized problems is proposed and the convergence of the regularized solutions to the original one is verified. By using Fenchel’s duality, optimality systems which characterize the original and regularized solutions are obtained. The regularized optimality systems are discretized using a finite element method with (cross-grid P1)–Q0 elements for the velocity and pressure, respectively. A semismooth Newton algorithm is proposed in order to solve the discretized optimality systems. Using an additional relaxation, a descent direction is constructed from each semismooth Newton iteration. Local superlinear convergence of the method is also proved. Finally, we perform numerical experiments in order to investigate the behavior and efficiency of the method.

In this paper we consider a singularly perturbed elliptic model problem with two small parameters posed on the unit square. The problem is solved numerically by the finite element method using piecewise linear or bilinear elements on a layer-adapted Shishkin mesh. We prove that method with bilinear elements is uniformly convergent in an energy norm. Numerical results confirm our theoretical analysis.

In this paper we revisit a quasi-static contact problem of a thermoviscoelastic beam between two rigid obstacles which was recently studied in [1]. The variational problem leads to a coupled system, composed of an elliptic variational inequality for the vertical displacement and a linear variational equation for the temperature field. Then, its numerical resolution is considered, based on the finite element method to approximate the spatial variable and the implicit Euler scheme to discretize the time derivatives. Error estimates are proved from which, under adequate regularity conditions, the linear convergence is derived. Finally, some numerical simulations are presented to show the accuracy of the algorithm and the behavior of the solution.

In this paper, the linear conforming finite element method for the one-dimensional Berenger's PML boundary is investigated and well-posedness of the given equation is discussed. Furthermore, optimal error estimates and stability in the L^2 or H^1-norm are derived under the assumption that h, h^[email protected]^2 and h^[email protected]^3 are sufficiently small, where h is the mesh size and @w denotes a fixed frequency. Numerical examples are presented to validate the theoretical error bounds.

A simple technique is given in this paper for the construction and analysis of monotone iterative methods for a class of nonlinear partial differential equations. With the help of the special nonlinear property we can construct nonstationary parameters which can speed up the iterative process in solving the nonlinear system. Picard, Gauss–Seidel, and Jacobi monotone iterative methods are presented and analyzed for the adaptive solutions. The adaptive meshes are generated by the 1-irregular mesh refinement scheme which together with the M-matrix of the finite element stiffness matrix lead to existence–uniqueness–comparison theorems with simple upper and lower solutions as initial iterates. Some numerical examples, including a test problem with known analytical solution, are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the adaptive and monotone properties. Numerical results of simulations on a MOSFET with the gate length down to 34 nm are also given.

This paper derives a general procedure to produce an asymptotic expansion for eigenvalues of the Stokes problem by mixed finite elements. By means of integral expansion technique, the asymptotic error expansions for the approximations of the Stokes eigenvalue problem by Bernadi–Raugel element and Q2-P1 element are given. Based on such expansions, the extrapolation technique is applied to improve the accuracy of the approximations.

The subject of this paper is the numerical simulation of the interaction of two-dimensional incompressible viscous flow and a vibrating airfoil, which can rotate around the elastic axis and oscillate in the vertical direction. The numerical simulation consists of the finite element approximation of the Navier–Stokes equations coupled with the system of ordinary differential equations describing the airfoil motion. The arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) formulation of the Navier–Stokes equations, stabilization the finite element discretization and coupling of both models is discussed. Moreover, the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) system of equations together with the Spallart–Almaras turbulence model is also discussed. The computational results of aeroelastic calculations are presented and compared with the NASTRAN code solutions.

Real life reaction–diffusion problems are characterized by their inherent or externally induced uncertainties in the design parameters. This paper presents a finite element solution of reaction–diffusion equations of Wick type. Using the Wick-product properties and the Wiener–Itô chaos expansion, the stochastic variational problem is reformulated to a set of deterministic variational problems. To obtain the chaos coefficients in the corresponding deterministic reaction–diffusion, we implement the usual Galerkin finite element method using standard techniques. Once this representation is computed, the statistics of the numerical solution can be easily evaluated. Computational results are shown for one- and two-dimensional test examples.

This paper addresses the theoretical analysis of a fully discrete scheme for the one-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equation on unbounded domain. We first reduce the original problem into an initial-boundary value problem in a bounded domain by introducing a transparent boundary condition, then fully discretize this reduced problem by applying Crank–Nicolson scheme in time and linear or quadratic finite element approximation in space. By a rigorous analysis, this scheme has been proved to be unconditionally stable and convergent, its convergence order has also be obtained. Finally, two numerical examples are performed to show the accuracy of the scheme.

A one-dimensional singularly perturbed problem with a boundary turning point is considered in this paper. Let Vh be the linear finite element space on a suitable grid Th. A variant of streamline diffusion finite element method is proved to be almost uniform stable in the sense that the numerical approximation uh satisfies ∥u-uh∥∞⩽C|lnε| infvh∈Vh∥u-vh∥∞, where C is independent with the small diffusion coefficient ε and the mesh Th. Such stability result is applied to layer-adapted grids to obtain almost ε-uniform second order scheme for turning point problems.

In this paper we analyze a characteristic finite element approximation of convex optimal control problems governed by linear convection-dominated diffusion equations with pointwise inequality constraints on the control variable, where the state and co-state variables are discretized by piecewise linear continuous functions and the control variable is approximated by either piecewise constant functions or piecewise linear discontinuous functions. A priori error estimates are derived for the state, co-state and the control. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of the characteristic finite element method.
