In this paper, we present a reconstruction of climate conditions during the Last Glacial Maximum on a karst plateau Snežnik, which lies in Dinaric Mountains (southern Slovenia) and bears evidence of glaciation. The reconstruction merges geomorphological ice limits, classified as either clear or unclear, and a computer modelling approach based on the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM). Based on extensive numerical experiments where we studied the agreements between simulated and geomorphological ice extent, we propose using a combination of a high-resolution precipitation model that accounts for orographic precipitation combined with a simple elevation-based temperature model. The geomorphological ice extent can be simulated with climate to be around 6 °C colder than the modern day and with a lower-than-modern-day amount of precipitation, which matches other state-of-the art climate reconstructions for the era. The results indicate that an orographic precipitation model is essential for the accurate simulation of the study area, with moist southern winds from the nearby Adriatic Sea having a predominant effect on the precipitation patterns. Finally, this study shows that transforming climate conditions towards wetter and warmer or drier and colder does not significantly change the conditions for glacier formation. The total air content (TAC) of polar ice cores has long been considered a potential proxy for past ice sheet elevation. Recent work, however, has shown that a variety of other factors also influence this parameter. In this paper we present a high-resolution TAC record from the South Pole ice core (SPC14) covering the last 54 000 years and discuss the implications of the data for interpreting TAC from ice cores. The SPC14 TAC record shows multiple features of interest, including (1) long-term orbital-scale variability, (2) millennial-scale variability in the Holocene and last glacial period, and (3) a period of stability from 35 to 25 ka. The longer, orbital-scale variations in TAC are highly correlated with integrated summer insolation (ISI), corroborating the potential of TAC to provide an independent dating tool via orbital tuning. Large millennial-scale variability in TAC during the last glacial period is positively correlated with past accumulation rate reconstructions as well as δ15 N-N 2 , a firn thickness proxy. These TAC variations are too large to be controlled by direct effects of temperature and too rapid to be tied to elevation changes. We propose that grain size metamorphism near the firn surface explains these changes. We note, however, that at sites with different climate histories than the South Pole, TAC variations may be dominated by other processes. The North Sea Last Interglacial sea level is sensitive to the fingerprint of mass loss from polar ice sheets. However, the signal is complicated by the influence of glacial isostatic adjustment driven by Penultimate Glacial Period ice-sheet changes, and yet these ice-sheet geometries remain significantly uncertain. Here, we produce new reconstructions of the Eurasian ice sheet during the Penultimate Glacial Maximum (PGM) by employing large ensemble experiments from a simple ice-sheet model that depends solely on basal shear stress, ice extent, and topography. To explore the range of uncertainty in possible ice geometries, we use a parameterised shear-stress map as input that has been developed to incorporate bedrock characteristics and the influence of ice-sheet basal processes. We perform Bayesian uncertainty quantification, utilising Gaussian process emulation, to calibrate against global ice-sheet reconstructions of the Last Deglaciation and rule out combinations of input parameters that produce unrealistic ice sheets. The refined parameter space is then applied to the PGM to create an ensemble of constrained 3D Eurasian ice-sheet geometries. Our reconstructed PGM Eurasian ice-sheet volume is 48±8 m sea-level equivalent (SLE). We find that the Barents–Kara Sea region displays both the largest mean volume and volume uncertainty of 24±8 m SLE while the British–Irish sector volume of 1.7±0.2 m SLE is the smallest. During the Last Glacial Period, the climate shift to cold conditions associated with changes in atmospheric circulation and vegetation cover resulted in the development of large aeolian systems in Europe. On a regional scale, many factors may have influenced dust dynamics, such as the latitudinal difference between the various aeolian systems and the variability of the sources of wind-transported particles. Therefore, the assumption that the timing of aeolian deposition is strictly synchronous in Europe does not seem to be the most plausible hypothesis and needs to be evaluated. To test this assumption, the chronology of loess deposition in different European regions was investigated by studying 93 luminescence-dated loess–palaeosol sequences with their data recalculated and compiled in a single comma separated values (*.csv) file: the ChronoLoess database. Our study shows that the two major aeolian systems, the Northern European Loess Belt (NELB) on the one hand and the systems associated with the rivers draining the Alpine Ice Sheet on the other hand, developed asynchronously. The significant deposition started at about 32 kyr b2k for the NELB vs. 42 kyr b2k for the perialpine loess and peaked about 2 millennia later for the former (21.8 vs. 23.9 kyr b2k, respectively). This shift resulted mainly from the time lag between the maxima of the Alpine and Fennoscandian ice sheets, which acted as the primary sources of fine-grained particles through glacial abrasion. The major geomorphic changes that resulted from the development and decay of the Fennoscandian and British–Irish ice sheets also played an important role. Particularly, ice sheet coalescence during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) diverted meltwater fluxes through the Channel River and provided vast amounts of glacial particles available for deflation in the western NELB. The period during which the maximum mass accumulation rate was reached for each loess–palaeosol sequence is relatively homogeneous in the NELB and ranges from 30 to 19 kyr b2k, whereas it is more scattered in the perialpine systems (>60 to 14 kyr b2k). This probably resulted from a combination of factors, including the asynchrony of maximum valley glacier advances and local geomorphic factors. The precise environmental mechanisms controlling Quaternary glacial cycles remain ambiguous. To address this problem, it is critical to better comprehend the drivers of spatio-temporal variability in ice-sheet evolution by establishing reliable chronologies of former outlet-glacier advances. When spanning multiple glacial cycles, such chronologies have the capacity to contribute to knowledge on the topic of interhemispheric phasing of glaciations and climate events. In southern Argentina, reconstructions of this kind are achievable, as Quaternary expansions of the Patagonian Ice Sheet have emplaced a well-preserved geomorphological record covering several glacial cycles. Moreover, robust ice-sheet reconstructions from Patagonia are powerful barometers of former climate change, as Patagonian glaciers are influenced by the Southern Westerly Winds and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current coupled to them. It is essential to better constrain former shifts in these circulation mechanisms as they may have played a critical role in pacing regional and possibly global Quaternary climate change. Here, we present a new set of cosmogenic 10 Be and 26 Al exposure ages from pre-Last Glacial Cycle moraine boulder, glaciofluvial outwash cobble, and bedrock samples. This dataset constitutes the first direct chronology dating pre-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) glacier advances in northern Patagonia and completes our effort to date the entire preserved moraine record of the Río Corcovado valley system (43 ∘ S, 71 ∘ W). We find that the outermost margins of the study site depict at least three distinct pre-Last Glacial Cycle stadials occurring around 290–270, 270–245, and 130–150 ka. Combined with the local LGM chronology, we discover that a minimum of four distinct Pleistocene stadials occurred during Marine Isotope Stages 8, 6, and 2 in northern Patagonia. Evidence for Marine Isotope Stage 4 and 3 deposits were not found at the study site. This may illustrate former longitudinal and latitudinal asynchronies in the Patagonian Ice Sheet mass balance during these Marine Isotope Stages. We find that the most extensive middle-to-late Pleistocene expansions of the Patagonian Ice Sheet appear to be out of phase with local summer insolation intensity but synchronous with orbitally controlled periods of longer and colder winters. Our findings thus enable the exploration of the potential roles of seasonality and seasonal duration in driving the southern mid-latitude ice-sheet mass balance, and they facilitate novel glacio-geomorphological interpretations for the study region. Spring onset is an important phenological observation that is sensitive to modern climate change and can be traced back in geological time. The Late Glacial (∼ 14 500–11 700 cal yr BP) spring onset and growing season (growing degree days) dynamics in the eastern Baltic region were reconstructed using the micro-phenological approach based on the dwarf birch (Betula nana) subfossil leaf cuticles. The presented study sites, Lake Lielais Svetinu (eastern Latvia) and Lake Kosilase (central Estonia), are located ∼ 200 km apart in the region affected by the south-eastern sector of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. During the Late Glacial period the region and its biota were influenced by the retreating glacier and the different stages of the Baltic Ice Lake. The plant macrofossil data confirm that the study sites were in different vegetation zones (arctic-to-boreal) during the Late Glacial period. The dynamics of the estimated length of the growing season and spring onset, combined with the regional collection of plant macrofossil records, suggest the importance of local settings to species migration. During the Late Glacial warming period (Bølling–Allerød), a notable spring warming and longer growing season was calculated based on micro-phenology, but the treeline did not extend beyond central Estonia. The comparison of pollen- and chironomid-inferred past temperature estimations with spring onset, growing degree days, and plant macrofossil data shows coherent patterns during the cooler Older Dryas and warmer Bølling–Allerød periods, while suggesting more complicated climate dynamics and possible warmer episodes during the Younger Dryas cold reversal. The Arctic's glacial history has classically been interpreted from marine records in terms of the fluctuations of the Eurasian and North American ice sheets. However, the extent and timing of the East Siberian Ice Sheet (ESIS) have remained uncertain. A recently discovered glacially scoured cross-shelf trough extending to the edge of the continental shelf north of the De Long Islands has provided additional evidence that glacial ice existed on parts of the East Siberian Sea (ESS) during previous glacial periods MIS 6 and 4. This study concentrates on defining the heavy mineral signature of glacigenic deposits from the East Siberian continental margin which were collected during the 2014 SWERUS-C3 expedition. The cores studied are 20-GC1 from the East Siberian shelf, 23-GC1 and 24-GC1 from the De Long Trough (DLT), and 29-GC1 from the southern Lomonosov Ridge (LR). Heavy mineral assemblages were used to identify prominent parent rocks in hinterland and other sediment source areas. The parent rock areas include major eastern Siberian geological provinces such as the Omolon massif, the Chukotka fold belt, the Verkhoyansk fold belt, and possibly the Okhotsk–Chukotka volcanic belt. The primary riverine sources for the ESS sediments are the Indigirka and Kolyma rivers, the material of which was glacially eroded and re-deposited in the DLT. The higher abundances of amphiboles in the heavy mineral assemblages may indicate ESS paleovalley of the Indigirka River as a major pathway of sediments, while the Kolyma River paleovalley pathway relates to a higher share of pyroxenes and epidote. The mineralogical signature in the DLT diamicts, consisting predominantly of amphiboles and pyroxenes with a minor content of garnet and epidote, shows clear delivery from the eastern part of the ESIS. Although the physical properties of the DLT glacial diamict closely resemble a pervasive diamict unit recovered from the southern LR, their source material is slightly different. The assemblages with elevated amphibole and garnet content, along with higher titanite and ilmenite content of the southern LR ice-rafted diamict, emphasise the Verkhoyansk fold belt as a possible primary source. The presence of glacial sediments and the recovered glacial–tectonic features on the East Siberian continental shelf and slope, along with the results from this heavy mineral analysis, imply that glacial ice not only grew out of the East Siberian shelf but also from the De Long Islands, and that there was also ice rafting related sediment transportation to the southern LR from westerly sources, such as the Laptev Sea. ​​​​​​​Abrupt climate changes are defined as sudden climate changes that took place over tens to hundreds of years or recurred at millennial timescales; they are thought to involve processes that are internal to the climate system. By contrast, astronomically forced climate changes involve processes that are external to the climate system and whose multi-millennial quasi-periodic variations are well known from astronomical theory. In this paper, we re-examine the main climate variations determined from the U1308 North Atlantic marine record, which yields a detailed calving history of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets over the past 3.2 Myr. The magnitude and periodicity of the ice-rafted debris (IRD) events observed in the U1308 record allow one to determine the timing of several abrupt climate changes, the larger ones corresponding to the massive iceberg discharges labeled Heinrich events (HEs). In parallel, abrupt warmings, called Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) events, have been identified in the Greenland records of the last glaciation cycle. Combining the HE and DO observations, we study a complex mechanism giving rise to the observed millennial-scale variability that subsumes the abrupt climate changes of last 0.9 Myr. This process is characterized by the presence of Bond cycles, which group DO events and the associated Greenland stadials into a trend of increased cooling, with IRD events embedded into every stadial, the latest of these being an HE. These Bond cycles may have occurred during the last 0.9 Ma when Northern Hemisphere ice sheets reached their maximum extent and volume, thus becoming a major player in this time interval's climate dynamics. Since the waxing and waning of ice sheets during the Quaternary period are orbitally paced, we conclude that the abrupt climate changes observed during the Middle Pleistocene and Upper Pleistocene are therewith indirectly linked to the astronomical theory of climate. The glacial landscape of northern Brandenburg, especially the Eberswalde–Chorin area, is one of the most important study areas of Quaternary research in northern Germany, not only with respect to its research history, but especially with regard to new mapping, sedimentological logging, and dating results using up-to-date methodologies. These new results have added an important puzzle-piece contributing to the development of a new concept of ice dynamics in the SW sector of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) during Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2). The young moraine area to the south-east of Berlin was repeatedly overrun and covered by Scandinavian ice sheets (SISs). The last glaciation took place during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), when the last/most recent SIS reached its furthest southern extent. An incompletely formed chain of terminal moraines marks the Brandenburg ice stage. The most recent glacier had its greatest environmental impact due to the large quantities of released meltwaters. Many subglacial channels, massive proglacial sands and huge meltwater streamways (Urstromtäler) were formed at that time. Changes in Southern Ocean export production have broad biogeochemical and climatic implications. Specifically, iron fertilization likely increased subantarctic nutrient utilization and enhanced the efficiency of the biological pump during glacials. However, past export production in the subantarctic southeastern Pacific is poorly documented, and its connection to Fe fertilization, potentially related to Patagonian Ice Sheet dynamics, is unknown. We report biological productivity changes over the past 400 kyr, based on a combination of 230 Th xs -normalized and stratigraphy-based mass accumulation rates of biogenic barium, organic carbon, biogenic opal and calcium carbonate as indicators of paleo-export production in a sediment core upstream of the Drake Passage (57.5 ∘ S, 70.3 ∘ W). In addition, we use fluxes of iron and lithogenic material as proxies for terrigenous input, and thus potential micronutrient supply. Stratigraphy-based mass accumulation rates are strongly influenced by bottom-current dynamics, which result in variable sediment focussing or winnowing at our site. Carbonate is virtually absent in the core, except during peak interglacial intervals of the Holocene, and Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 5 and 11, likely caused by transient decreases in carbonate dissolution. All other proxies suggest that export production increased during most glacial periods, coinciding with high iron fluxes. Such augmented glacial iron fluxes at the core site were most likely derived from glaciogenic input from the Patagonian Ice Sheet promoting the growth of phytoplankton. Additionally, glacial export production peaks are also consistent with northward shifts of the Subantarctic and Polar Fronts, which positioned our site south of the Subantarctic Front and closer to silicic acid-rich waters of the Polar Frontal Zone. However, glacial export production near the Drake Passage was lower than in the Atlantic and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean, which may relate to complete consumption of silicic acid in the study area. Our results underline the importance of micro-nutrient fertilization through lateral terrigenous input from South America rather than eolian transport and exemplify the role of frontal shifts and nutrient limitation for past productivity changes in the Pacific entrance to the Drake Passage. Reconstructing the growth and decay of palaeo-ice sheets is critical to understanding the relationships between global climate and sea-level change and to testing numerical ice sheet models. In this study, we integrate recently acquired high-resolution 2D seismic reflection and borehole datasets from two wind-farm sites offshore of the Netherlands to investigate the sedimentary, geomorphological, and glaciotectonic records left by the Saalian Drenthe substage glaciation, when Scandinavian land ice reached its southernmost extent in the southern North Sea (ca. 160 ka, Marine Isotope Stage 6). A complex assemblage of glaciogenic sediments and glaciotectonic structures is buried in the shallow subsurface. The northern wind-farm site revealed a set of NE–SW-oriented subglacial meltwater channels filled with till and glaciofluvial sediments and an E–W-trending composite ridge with local evidence of intense glaciotectonic deformation that denotes the maximum limit reached by the ice. Based on the identified glacial geomorphology, we refine the mapping of the maximum ice sheet extent offshore, revealing that the ice margin morphology is more complex than previously envisaged and displaying a lobate shape. Ice retreat left an unusual paraglacial landscape characterised by the progressive infilling of topographic depressions carved by ice-driven erosion and a diffuse drainage network of outwash channels. The net direction of outwash was to the west and southwest into a nearby glacial basin. We demonstrate the utility of offshore wind-farm data as records of process–form relationships preserved in buried landscapes, which can be utilised in refining palaeo-ice sheet margins and informing longer-term drivers of change in low-relief settings. Glacial periods undergo frequent climate shifts between warm interstadials and cold stadials on a millennial timescale. Recent studies show that the duration of these climate modes varies with the background climate; a colder background climate and lower CO 2 generally result in a shorter interstadial and a longer stadial through its impact on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). However, the duration of stadials is shorter during Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3) than during MIS5, despite the colder climate in MIS3, suggesting potential control from other climate factors on the duration of stadials. In this study, we investigate the role of glacial ice sheets. For this purpose, freshwater hosing experiments are conducted with an atmosphere–ocean general circulation model under MIS5a and MIS3 boundary conditions, as well as MIS3 boundary conditions with MIS5a ice sheets. The impact of ice sheet differences on the duration of the stadials is evaluated by comparing recovery times of the AMOC after the freshwater forcing is stopped. These experiments show a slightly shorter recovery time of the AMOC during MIS3 compared with MIS5a, which is consistent with ice core data. We find that larger glacial ice sheets in MIS3 shorten the recovery time. Sensitivity experiments show that stronger surface winds over the North Atlantic shorten the recovery time by increasing the surface salinity and decreasing the sea ice amount in the deepwater formation region, which sets favorable conditions for oceanic convection. In contrast, we also find that surface cooling by larger ice sheets tends to increase the recovery time of the AMOC by increasing the sea ice thickness over the deepwater formation region. Thus, this study suggests that the larger ice sheet during MIS3 compared with MIS5a could have contributed to the shortening of stadials in MIS3, despite the climate being colder than that of MIS5a, because surface wind plays a larger role. We investigate the sensitivity of a distributed glacier surface mass and energy balance model using a variance-based analysis, for two distinct periods of the last glacial cycle: the present day (PD) and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The results can be summarized in three major findings: the sensitivity towards individual model parameters and parameterizations is as variable in space as it is in time. The model is most sensitive to uncertainty related to atmospheric emissivity and the down-welling longwave radiation. While the turbulent latent heat flux has a sizable contribution to the surface mass balance uncertainty in central Greenland today, it dominates over the entire ice sheet during the cold climate of the LGM, in spite of its low impact on the overall surface mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet in the modern climate. We conclude that quantifying the model sensitivity is very helpful for tuning free model parameters because it clarifies the relative importance of individual parameters and highlights interactions between them that need to be considered. Unanswered questions about the glacier and climate history preceding the global Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in the southern temperate latitudes remain. The Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 is normally understood as a global interstadial period; nonetheless its climate was punctuated by conspicuous variability, and its signature has not been resolved beyond the polar realms. In this paper, we compile a 10Be depth profile, single grain infrared (IR) stimulated luminescence dating and 14C samples to derive a new glacier record for the principal outwash plain complex, deposited by the western Patagonian Ice Sheet (PIS) during the last glacial period (Llanquihue Glaciation) on the Isla de Chiloé, southern Chile (42 ∘ S). In this region, the Golfo de Corcovado Ice Lobe left a distinct geomorphic and stratigraphic imprint, suitable for reconstructing former ice dynamics and timing of past climate change. Our data indicate that maximum glaciation occurred by 57.8±4.7 ka without reaching the Pacific Ocean coast. Ice readavanced and buttressed against the eastern side of the Cordillera de la Costa again by 26.0±2.9 ka. Our data further support the notion of a large ice extent during parts of the MIS 3 in Patagonia and New Zealand but appear to contradict near contemporaneous interstadial evidence in the southern midlatitudes, including Chiloé. We propose that the PIS expanded to its full-glacial Llanquihue moraines, recording a rapid response of southern mountain glaciers to the millennial-scale climate stadials that punctuated the MIS 3 at the poles and elsewhere. Das Marine Isotopenstadium (MIS) 3 wird gemeinhin als globale interstadiale Phase verstanden, die jedoch durch phasenweise starke Variabilität gekennzeichnet war, deren Verlauf jenseits der Polargebiete jedoch noch nicht aufgelöst werden konnte. In dieser Studie werden ein 10Be Tiefenprofil, Datierungsergebnisse von Einzelkorn-Lumineszenz-Messungen mittels infraroter (IR) Stimulation und Alter von 14C Datierungen kompiliert, um für den Haupt-Sander-Komplex, der vom westlichen Patagonischen Eisschild (PIS) während des letzten Glazials (Llanquihue Vereisung) auf der Isla de Chiloé (südliches Chile, 42 ∘ S) aufgebaut wurde, eine neue Vereisungschronologie aufzubauen. In dieser Region ermöglichen die deutliche geomorphologische und stratigraphische Prägung durch den Golfo de Corcovado Lobus die Rekonstruktion von vergangener Eisdynamik und der Zeitstellung klimatischer Veränderungen. A new ice core drilled at the South Pole provides a 54 000-year paleoenvironmental record including the composition of the past atmosphere. This paper describes the SP19 chronology for the South Pole atmospheric gas record and complements a previous paper (Winski et al., 2019) describing the SP19 ice chronology. The gas chronology is based on a discrete methane (CH 4) record with 20- to 190-year resolution. To construct the gas timescale, abrupt changes in atmospheric CH 4 during the glacial period and centennial CH 4 variability during the Holocene were used to synchronize the South Pole gas record with analogous data from the West Antarctic Ice Sheet Divide ice core. Stratigraphic matching based on visual optimization was verified using an automated matching algorithm. The South Pole ice core recovers all expected changes in CH 4 based on previous records. Gas transport in the firn results in smoothing of the atmospheric gas record with a smoothing function spectral width that ranges from 30 to 78 years, equal to 3 % of the gas-age–ice-age difference, or Δ age. The new gas chronology, in combination with the existing ice age scale from Winski et al. (2019), allows a model-independent reconstruction of the gas-age–ice-age difference through the whole record, which will be useful for testing firn densification models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In 2013 an ice core was recovered from Roosevelt Island, an ice dome between two submarine troughs carved by paleo-ice-streams in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. The ice core is part of the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) project and provides new information about the past configuration of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and its retreat during the last deglaciation. In this work we present the RICE17 chronology, which establishes the depth–age relationship for the top 754 m of the 763 m core. RICE17 is a composite chronology combining annual layer interpretations for 0–343 m with new estimates for gas and ice ages based on synchronization of CH4 and δ18O atm records to corresponding records from the WAIS Divide ice core and by modeling of the gas age–ice age difference. Novel aspects of this work include the following: (1) an automated algorithm for multiproxy stratigraphic synchronization of high-resolution gas records; (2) synchronization using centennial-scale variations in methane for pre-anthropogenic time periods (60–720 m, 1971 CE to 30 ka), a strategy applicable for future ice cores; and (3) the observation of a continuous climate record back to ∼65 ka providing evidence that the Roosevelt Island Ice Dome was a constant feature throughout the last glacial period. The initiation and evolution of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet are relatively poorly constrained. International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 341 recovered marine sediments at Site U1417 in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA). Here we present alkenone-derived sea surface temperature (SST) analyses alongside ice-rafted debris (IRD), terrigenous, and marine organic matter inputs to the GOA through the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene. The first IRD contribution from tidewater glaciers in southwest Alaska is recorded at 2.9 Ma, indicating that the Cordilleran Ice Sheet extent increased in the late Pliocene. A higher occurrence of IRD and higher sedimentation rates in the GOA during the early Pleistocene, at 2.5 Ma, occur in synchrony with SSTs warming on the order of 1 ∘ C relative to the Pliocene. All records show a high degree of variability in the early Pleistocene, indicating highly efficient ocean–climate–ice interactions through warm SST–ocean evaporation–orographic precipitation–ice growth mechanisms. A climatic shift towards ocean circulation in the subarctic Pacific similar to the pattern observed during negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) conditions today occurs with the development of more extensive Cordilleran glaciation and may have played a role through increased moisture supply to the subarctic Pacific. Outburst floods from subglacial lakes beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet modulate ice-flow velocities over periods of months to years. Although subglacial lake drainage events have been observed from satellite-altimetric data, little is known about their role in the long-term evolution of ice-sheet basal hydrology. Here, we systematically map and model past water flow through an extensive area containing over 1000 subglacial channels and 19 former lake basins exposed on over 19 000 km 2 of seafloor by the retreat of Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers, West Antarctica. At 507 m wide and 43 m deep on average, the channels offshore of present-day Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers are approximately twice as deep, 3 times as wide, and cover an area over 400 times larger than the terrestrial meltwater channels comprising the Labyrinth in the Antarctic Dry Valleys. The channels incised into bedrock offshore of contemporary Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers would have been capable of accommodating discharges of up to 8.8×106 m 3 s -1. We suggest that the channels were formed by episodic discharges from subglacial lakes trapped during ice-sheet advance and retreat over multiple glacial periods. Our results document the widespread influence of episodic subglacial drainage events during past glacial periods, in particular beneath large ice streams similar to those that continue to dominate contemporary ice-sheet discharge. The last glacial period (LGP; ca. 110–10 kyr BP) was marked by the existence of two types of abrupt climatic changes, Dansgaard–Oeschger (DO) and Heinrich (H) events. Although the mechanisms behind these are not fully understood, it is generally accepted that the presence of ice sheets played an important role in their occurrence. While an important effort has been made to investigate the dynamics and evolution of the Laurentide ice sheet (LIS) during this period, the Eurasian ice sheet (EIS) has not received much attention, in particular from a modeling perspective. However, meltwater discharge from this and other ice sheets surrounding the Nordic seas is often implied as a potential cause of ocean instabilities that lead to glacial abrupt climate changes. Thus, a better comprehension of the evolution of the EIS during the LGP is important to understand its role in glacial abrupt climate changes. Here we investigate the response of the EIS to millennial-scale climate variability during the LGP. We use a hybrid, three-dimensional, thermomechanical ice-sheet model that includes ice shelves and ice streams. The model is forced off-line via a novel perturbative approach that, as opposed to conventional methods, clearly differentiates between the spatial patterns of millennial-scale and orbital-scale climate variability. Thus, it provides a more realistic treatment of the forcing at millennial timescales. The effect of both atmospheric and oceanic variations are included. Our results show that the EIS responds with enhanced ice discharge in phase with interstadial warming in the North Atlantic when forced with surface ocean temperatures. Conversely, when subsurface ocean temperatures are used, enhanced ice discharge occurs both during stadials and at the beginning of the interstadials. Separating the atmospheric and oceanic effects demonstrates the major role of the ocean in controlling the dynamics of the EIS on millennial timescales. While the atmospheric forcing alone is only able to produce modest iceberg discharges, warming of the ocean leads to higher rates of iceberg discharges as a result of relatively strong basal melting at the margins of the ice sheet. Our results clearly show the capability of the EIS to react to glacial abrupt climate changes, and highlight the need for stronger constraints on the ice sheet's glacial dynamics and climate–ocean interactions. The European Alps, the cradle of pioneering glacial studies, are one of the regions where geological markers of past glaciations are most abundant and well-studied. Such conditions make the region ideal for testing numerical glacier models based on simplified ice flow physics against field-based reconstructions and vice versa. Here, we use the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM) to model the entire last glacial cycle (120-0 ka) in the Alps, using horizontal resolutions of 2 and 1 km. Climate forcing is derived using two sources: present-day climate data from WorldClim and the ERA-Interim reanalysis; time-dependent temperature offsets from multiple palaeo-climate proxies. Among the latter, only the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) ice core record yields glaciation during marine oxygen isotope stages 4 (69-62 ka) and 2 (34-18 ka). This is spatially and temporally consistent with the geological reconstructions, while the other records used result in excessive early glacial cycle ice cover and a late Last Glacial Maximum. Despite the low variability of this Antarcticbased climate forcing, our simulation depicts a highly dynamic ice sheet, showing that Alpine glaciers may have advanced many times over the foreland during the last glacial cycle. Ice flow patterns during peak glaciation are largely governed by subglacial topography but include occasional transfluences through the mountain passes. Modelled maximum ice surface is on average 861m higher than observed trimline elevations in the upper Rhône Valley, yet our simulation predicts little erosion at high elevation due to cold-based ice. Finally, despite the uniform climate forcing, differences in glacier catchment hypsometry produce a timetransgressive Last Glacial Maximum advance, with some glaciers reaching their modelled maximum extent as early as 27 ka and others as late as 21 ka. Systematically monitoring Greenland's outlet glaciers is central to understanding the timescales over which their flow and sea level contributions evolve. In this study we use data from the new Sentinel-1a/b satellite constellation to generate 187 velocity maps, covering four key outlet glaciers in Greenland: Jakobshavn Isbræ, Petermann Glacier, Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden, and Zachariæ Isstrøm. These data provide a new high temporal resolution record (6-day averaged solutions) of each glacier's evolution since 2014, and resolve recent seasonal speedup periods and inter-annual changes in Greenland outlet glacier speed with an estimated certainty of 10 %. We find that since 2012, Jakobshavn Isbræ has been decelerating, and now flows approximately 1250myr-1 (10 %), slower than 5 years previously, thus reversing an increasing trend in ice velocity that has persisted during the last decade. Despite this, we show that seasonal variability in ice velocity remains significant: up to 750myr-1 (14 %) at a distance of 12 km inland of the terminus. We also use our new dataset to estimate the duration of speedup periods (80-95 days) and to demonstrate a strong relationship between ice front position and ice flow at Jakobshavn Isbræ, with increases in speed of ~1800myr-1 in response to 1 km of retreat. Elsewhere, we record significant seasonal changes in flow of up to 25% (2015) and 18% (2016) at Petermann Glacier and Zachariæ Isstrøm, respectively. This study provides a first demonstration of the capacity of a new era of operational radar satellites to provide frequent and timely monitoring of ice sheet flow, and to better resolve the timescales over which glacier dynamics evolve. It is well known that ice sheet-climate feedbacks are essential for realistically simulating the spatiotemporal evolution of continental ice sheets over glacial-interglacial cycles. However, many of these feedbacks are dependent on the ice sheet thickness, which is poorly constrained by proxy data records. For example, height estimates of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) topography at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; ~ 21 000 years ago) vary by more than 1 km among different ice sheet reconstructions. In order to better constrain the LIS elevation it is therefore important to understand how the mean climate is influenced by elevation discrepancies of this magnitude. Here we use an atmospheric circulation model coupled to a slab-ocean model to analyze the LGM surface temperature response to a broad range of LIS elevations (from 0 to over 4 km). We find that raising the LIS topography induces a widespread surface warming in the Arctic region, amounting to approximately 1.5 °C per km of elevation increase, or about 6.5 °C for the highest LIS. The warming is attributed to an increased poleward energy flux by atmospheric stationary waves, amplified by surface albedo and water vapor feedbacks, which account for about two-thirds of the total temperature response. These results suggest a strong feedback between continental-scale ice sheets and the Arctic temperatures that may help constrain LIS elevation estimates for the LGM and explain differences in ice distribution between the LGM and earlier glacial periods. The surface energy and mass balance of ice sheets strongly depends on the amount of solar radiation absorbed at the surface, which is mainly controlled by the albedo of snow and ice. Here, using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity, we explore the role played by surface albedo for the simulation of glacial cycles. We show that the evolution of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets over the last glacial cycle is very sensitive to the representation of snow albedo in the model. It is well known that the albedo of snow depends strongly on snow grain size and the content of lightabsorbing impurities. Excluding either the snow aging effect or the dust darkening effect on snow albedo leads to an excessive ice build-up during glacial times and consequently to a failure in simulating deglaciation. While the effect of snow grain growth on snow albedo is well constrained, the albedo reduction due to the presence of dust in snow is much more uncertain because the light-absorbing properties of dust vary widely as a function of dust mineral composition. We also show that assuming slightly different optical properties of dust leads to very different ice sheet and climate evolutions in the model. Conversely, ice sheet evolution is less sensitive to the choice of ice albedo in the model. During the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the glaciation in the European Alps reached maximum ice extent. We already simulated the steady states of the Alpine ice coverage for several climate drivers in Becker et al. (2016) and heighten in this article such studies for the Swiss Valais region. To this end, we employ the Parallel Ice Sheet Model (PISM), which combines the shallow ice approximation (SIA) with basal sliding elements of the shallow shelf approximation (SSA), and subject this model to various external driving mechanisms. We further test the sensitivity of this kind of the ice coverage in the Valais region to a temporally constant climate and to monotonic ice sheet build-up from inception to steady state as well as to the Dye 3 temperature driving during the past 120 000 years. We also test differences in the precipitation patterns exerted to the northern and southern catchment areas of the Rhone and Toce rivers to possible transfluence changes in ice from the northern to the southern catchment areas and vice versa. Moreover, we study the effect of the ice deformability and estimate the removal up to 1000m of sediment in the Rhone Valley and study the removal of rock hindering the flow through the valley cross section at the knee of Martigny. All these studies took place because of a discrepancy in the ice height prediction of the modelled ice sheet with its geomorphologically reconstructed counterpart with proxy data obtained by Bini et al. (2009) as well as a difference in ice height between the two of up to 800 m. Unfortunately, all the scenarios in the model do not sufficiently reduce this discrepancy in the height prediction and the geomorphological reconstruction. The aim of this study is to assess and improve the methods currently used to force ice sheet models offline. To this end, three different synthetic transient forcing climatologies are developed for the past 120 kyr following a perturbative approach and applied to an ice-sheet model. The results are used to evaluate their consequences for simulating the paleo evolution of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. The first method follows the usual approach in which temperature anomalies relative to present are calculated by combining a present-day climatology with a simulated glacial-interglacial climatic anomaly field interpolated through an index derived from ice-core data. In the second approach the representation of millennial-scale climate variability is improved by incorporating a simulated stadial-interstadial anomaly field. The third is a refinement of the second one in which the amplitudes of both orbital and millennial-scale variations are corrected to provide a perfect agreement with a recent absolute temperature reconstruction over Greenland. The comparison of the three climate forcing methods highlights the tendency of the usual approach to overestimate the temperature variability over North America and Eurasia at millennial timescales. This leads to a relatively high Northern Hemisphere (NH) ice-volume variability on these timescales. Through enhanced ablation, this results in too low an ice volume throughout the last glacial period (LGP), below or at the lower end of the uncertainty range of estimations. Improving the representation of millennial-scale variability alone yields an important increase of ice volume in all NH ice sheets, but especially in the Fennoscandian ice sheet (FIS). Optimizing the amplitude of the temperature anomalies to match the Greenland reconstruction results in a further increase of the simulated ice-sheet volume throughout the LGP. Our new method provides a more realistic representation of orbital and millennial scale climate variability and represents an improvement in the transient forcing of ice sheets during the last glacial period. Interestingly, our new approach underestimates ice-volume variations on millennial timescales as indicated by sea-level records. This suggests that either the origin of the latter is not the NH or that processes not represented in our study, notably variations in oceanic conditions, need to be invoked to account for an important role of millennial-scale climate variability on millennial-scale ice-volume fluctuations. We finally provide here both our derived climate evolution of the LGP using the three methods as well as the resulting ice-sheet configurations. These could be of interest for future studies dealing with the atmospheric or/and oceanic consequences of transient ice-sheet evolution throughout the LGP, and as a source of climate input to other ice sheet models. Large climate perturbations occurred during the transition between the penultimate glacial period and the Last Interglacial (Termination II), when the ice sheets retreated from their glacial configuration. Here we investigate the impact of ice sheet changes and associated freshwater fluxes on the climate evolution at the onset of the Last Interglacial. The period from 135 to 120 kyr BP is simulated with the Earth system model of intermediate complexity LOVECLIM v.1.3 with prescribed evolution of the Antarctic ice sheet, the Greenland ice sheet, and the other Northern Hemisphere ice sheets. Variations in meltwater fluxes from the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets lead to North Atlantic temperature changes and modifications of the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. By means of the interhemispheric see-saw effect, variations in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation also give rise to temperature changes in the Southern Hemisphere, which are additionally modulated by the direct impact of Antarctic meltwater fluxes into the Southern Ocean. Freshwater fluxes from the melting Antarctic ice sheet lead to a millennial timescale oceanic cold event in the Southern Ocean with expanded sea ice as evidenced in some ocean sediment cores, which may be used to constrain the timing of ice sheet retreat. After more than a century of geological research, the Cordilleran ice sheet of North America remains among the least understood in terms of its former extent, volume, and dynamics. Because of the mountainous topography on which the ice sheet formed, geological studies have often had only local or regional relevance and shown such a complexity that ice-sheet-wide spatial reconstructions of advance and retreat patterns are lacking. Here we use a numerical ice sheet model calibrated against field-based evidence to attempt a quantitative reconstruction of the Cordilleran ice sheet history through the last glacial cycle. A series of simulations is driven by time-dependent temperature offsets from six proxy records located around the globe. Although this approach reveals large variations in model response to evolving climate forcing, all simulations produce two major glaciations during marine oxygen isotope stages 4 (62.2-56.9 ka) and 2 (23.2-16.9 ka). The timing of glaciation is better reproduced using temperature reconstructions from Greenland and Antarctic ice cores than from regional oceanic sediment cores. During most of the last glacial cycle, the modelled ice cover is discontinuous and restricted to high mountain areas. However, widespread precipitation over the Skeena Mountains favours the persistence of a central ice dome throughout the glacial cycle. It acts as a nucleation centre before the Last Glacial Maximum and hosts the last remains of Cordilleran ice until the middle Holocene (6.7 ka). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper examines the coupled thermo-hydromechanical (THM) processes that develop in a fractured rock region within a fluid-saturated rock mass due to loads imposed by an advancing glacier. This scenario needs to be examined in order to assess the suitability of potential sites for the location of deep geologic repositories for the storage of high-level nuclear waste. The THM processes are examined using a computational multiphysics approach that takes into account thermo-poroelasticity of the intact geological formation and the presence of a system of sessile but hydraulically interacting fractures (fracture zones). The modelling considers coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical effects in both the intact rock and the fracture zones due to contact normal stresses and fluid pressure at the base of the advancing glacier. We present a new seafloor map for the northern Antarctic Peninsula (AP), including swath multibeam data sets from five national programs. Our map allows for the examination and interpretation of Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) paleo-ice-flow paths developed on the seafloor from the preservation of mega-scale glacial lineations, drumlinized features, and selective linear erosion. We combine this with terrestrial observations of flow direction to place constraints on ice divides and ice domes on the AP continental shelf during the LGM time interval. The results show a flow bifurcation as ice exits the Larsen B embayment. Flow emanating off the Seal Nunataks (including Robertson Island) is directed toward the southeast, then eastward as the flow transits toward the Robertson Trough. A second, stronger "streaming flow" is directed toward the southeast, then southward as ice overflowed the tip of the Jason Peninsula to reach the southern perimeter of the embayment. Our reconstruction also refines the extent of at least five other distinct paleo-ice-stream systems that, in turn, serve to delineate seven broad regions where contemporaneous ice domes must have been centered on the continental shelf at LGM. During the Cenozoic, land ice and climate interacted on many different timescales. On long timescales, the effect of land ice on global climate and sea level is mainly set by large ice sheets in North America, Eurasia, Greenland and Antarctica. The climatic forcing of these ice sheets is largely determined by the meridional temperature profile resulting from radiation and greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing. As a response, the ice sheets cause an increase in albedo and surface elevation, which operates as a feedback in the climate system. To quantify the importance of these climate-land ice processes, a zonally averaged energy balance climate model is coupled to five one-dimensional ice sheet models, representing the major ice sheets. In this study, we focus on the transient simulation of the past 800000 years, where a high-confidence CO2 record from ice core samples is used as input in combination with Milankovitch radiation changes. We obtain simulations of atmospheric temperature, ice volume and sea level that are in good agreement with recent proxy-data reconstructions. We examine long-term climate-ice-sheet interactions by a comparison of simulations with uncoupled and coupled ice sheets. We show that these interactions amplify global temperature anomalies by up to a factor of 2.6, and that they increase polar amplification by 94%. We demonstrate that, on these long timescales, the ice-albedo feedback has a larger and more global influence on the meridional atmospheric temperature profile than the surface-height-temperature feedback. Furthermore, we assess the influence of CO2 and insolation by performing runs with one or both of these variables held constant. We find that atmospheric temperature is controlled by a complex interaction of CO2 and insolation, and both variables serve as thresholds for northern hemispheric glaciation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recovery of a 1.5 million yr long ice core from Antarctica represents a keystone of our understanding of Quaternary climate, the progression of glaciation over this time period and the role of greenhouse gas cycles in this progression. Here we tackle the question of where such ice may still be found in the Antarctic ice sheet. We can show that such old ice is most likely to exist in the plateau area of the East Antarctic ice sheet (EAIS) without stratigraphic disturbance and should be able to be recovered after careful presite selection studies. Based on a simple ice and heat flow model and glaciological observations, we conclude that positions in the vicinity of major domes and saddle position on the East Antarctic Plateau will most likely have such old ice in store and represent the best study areas for dedicated reconnaissance studies in the near future. In contrast to previous ice core drill site selections, however, we strongly suggest significantly reduced ice thickness to avoid bottom melting. For example for the geothermal heat flux and accumulation conditions at Dome C, an ice thickness lower than but close to about 2500m would be required to find 1.5 Myr old ice (i.e., more than 700m less than at the current EPICA Dome C drill site). Within this constraint, the resolution of an Oldest-Ice record and the distance of such old ice to the bedrock should be maximized to avoid ice flow disturbances, for example, by finding locations with minimum geothermal heat flux. As the geothermal heat flux is largely unknown for the EAIS, this parameter has to be carefully determined beforehand. In addition, detailed bedrock topography and ice flow history has to be reconstructed for candidates of an Oldest-Ice ice coring site. Finally, we argue strongly for rapid access drilling before any full, deep ice coring activity commences to bring datable samples to the surface and to allow an age check of the oldest ice. In this study, we compare the simulated climatic impact of adding an Antarctic ice sheet (AIS) to the "greenhouse world" of the Eocene and removing the AIS from the modern world. The modern global mean surface temperature anomaly (ΔT ) induced by Antarctic Glaciation depends on the background COO2 levels and ranges from -1.22 to -0.18 K. The Eocene ΔT is nearly constant at ~-0.25 K. We calculate an climate sensitivity parameter S[Antarctica] which we define as ΔT divided by the change in effective radiative forcing (ΔQAntarctica) which includes some fast feedbacks imposed by prescribing the glacial properties of Antarctica. The main difference between the modern and Eocene responses is that a negative cloud feedback warms much of the Earth's surface as a large AIS is introduced in the Eocene, whereas this cloud feedback is weakly positive and acts in combination with positive sea-ice feedbacks to enhance cooling introduced by adding an ice sheet in the modern. Because of the importance of cloud feedbacks in determining the final temperature sensitivity of the AIS, our results are likely to be model dependent. Nevertheless, these model results suggest that the effective radiative forcing and feedbacks induced by the AIS did not significantly decrease global mean surface temperature across the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT -34.1 to 33.6 Ma) and that other factors like declining atmospheric CO2 are more important for cooling across the EOT. The results illustrate that the efficacy of AIS forcing in the Eocene is not necessarily close to one and is likely to be model and state dependent. This implies that using EOT paleoclimate proxy data by itself to estimate climate sensitivity for future climate prediction requires climate models and consequently these estimates will have large uncertainty, largely due to uncertainties in modelling low clouds. During the last glacial cycle, the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) has passed from an interglacial state, warmer than present day (PD), slowly into a glacial state, known as the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and then deglaciated on a faster timescale into the Holocene and PD conditions. Although we have proxy data of the size and extent of the ice sheet for the LGM, neither the oceanic temperatures of the Southern Ocean, nor the precipitation fields are well constrained. Also the time evolution of the ice volume during the glacial cycle is not fully clear. It is well assumed that it follows a sawtooth pattern, but from a modelling perspective different combinations of parameters and boundary conditions can give rise to plausible Antarctic configurations. Here we aim to study the uncertainty in AIS evolution resulting from ice-sheet model parameters, as well as the imposed climatic fields used as forcing. For this purpose we use the three-dimensional thermomechanical hybrid ice-sheet-shelf model Yelmo, which treats ice dynamics via the shallow-ce and shallow-shelf approximations, and accounts for basal melt below ice shelves and a subgrid parameterisation for treatment of the grounding line. We will focus on the effect of different climatic fields, such as precipitation and oceanic temperatures, as well as the effect of different enhancement factors and basal drag choices for reproducing consistent Antarctic configurations in the LGM and the PD. Improving our understanding of the effect of different ice-dynamics configurations in various climatic scenarios will help to better understand the past evolution of the AIS and potentially constrain its future evolution as well. Recent climatic warming has resulted in rapid retreat of glacier margins in the northern hemisphere exposing landforms which record changes in glacier extent and behaviour through their sedimentology and geomorphology. These modern glacial systems can be used as analogues for paleoglacial deposits, such as those found throughout Europe, Canada and the northern USA. Large ice sheets that covered land masses in the northern hemisphere during the Quaternary are known to have hosted fast-flowing ice streams that controlled ice dynamics and behaviour. However, the former positions of these ice steams are difficult to determine in paleoglacial deposits. This study focuses on documentation of sedimentological and geomorphological characteristics of the proglacial fields of western Slettjökull and Öldufellsjökull, northern outlet glaciers of the Mýrdalsjökull Ice Cap in southern Iceland. These glaciers were selected as they have both experienced periodic episodes of fast ice flow and rapid marginal advance (surges) during the last century. It is believed that surging ice margins can be used as analogues for rapidly moving paleoice streams common within the Laurentide and Scandinavian Ice Sheets during the last glaciation. A combination of landsystem analysis, whereby landforms are classified into genetically related landform-sediment assemblages, and architectural element analysis (AEA), a hierarchal method of examining sedimentary deposits, is applied in this study. This methodology allows a detailed model of the process-form relationship of landforms and sediments exposed in front of the retreating glaciers to be created. Initial mapping of the proglacial fields of Sléttjökull and Öldufellsjökull was completed using high resolution digital elevation models (DEM) obtained from the Icelandic Meteorological Office to investigate the types, scale and distribution of glacial landforms. These maps were ground checked in the field using a portable geographic information systems (GIS) unit. Sedimentological data were collected from exposures along river banks and terraces to identify the sediment types associated with different landform types. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was also used to collect high resolution imagery of the proglacial fields, focusing in particular on areas impacted by the most recent surge events. Field and remotely sensed data were combined into a GIS to examine the spatial relationship between the various landforms and their associated sediments. The proglacial fields of these two outlet glaciers show overall similarities in the distribution and morphology of landsystems tracts connected with end moraine development. However, the proglacial field of Sléttjökull has a larger sandur proximal to the glacier margin and a greater amount of glaciofluvial sediment compared with Öldufellsjökull. The areas of the proglacial fields impacted by surges that occurred in the 20th century show a distribution of landforms that is similar to that described from other surge-type glaciers, including hummocky terrain and kettle holes. However, these proglacial fields lack the prominent glaciotectonized end moraine frequently reported at surge-type glaciers. The model developed for these proglacial fields may be utilized to help identify areas affected by fast-flowing ice and the position of former ice streams in previously glaciated regions. Marine Isotope Stage 2 (MIS 2) is the latest glacial period and includes the Last Glacial Maximum, which is known as the period when global ice volume reached its maximum and global temperature lower than today. An advantage of MIS 2 is the availability of radiocarbon dating to make it possible to compare sea-level data with other paleoclimatic proxies. However, the number and accuracy of sea-level records during MIS 2 is currently lacking. Here we present the history of MIS 2 sea-level and ice-sheet change as recorded in the Bonaparte Gulf, northwestern Australia, by reconstructing relative sea level and then modeling glacial isostatic adjustment. The isostatically-corrected global sea-level history indicates that sea-level plateaued around 23 cal kyr BP prior reaching its minimum (~19 cal kyr BP). The maximal extent of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) on eastern Baffin Island during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM; about 20 000 years ago) has been widely debated during the last decades as different palaeo-glaciological models have been proposed. Spatial and temporal variability of ice sheets extension during Quaternary glaciations complicate the establishment of a reliable reconstruction of the ice margin. Furthermore, the lack of geophysical data in most of the fjords, and seaward, makes it difficult to reconcile the proposed terrestrial and marine glacial margins. Here we use high-resolution swath bathymetry imagery, combined with acoustic stratigraphy data and sediment cores collected during various oceanographic expeditions, focusing on the ice dynamics in the area of Clyde Inlet since the LGM. Our data reveal possible positions of the maximal extent of the LIS near the continental shelf edge. The deglaciation on the shelf was rather slow and episodic, as indicated by the presence of grounding-zone wedges, recessional moraines, as well as time-transgressive glacial lineations. Ice retreat in the fjord occurred more rapidly, most likely due to increased water depths. However, the presence of multiple moraine systems reveals periods of ice-margin stabilizations. The aim of this paper is to showcase an ancient (Late Palaeozoic) striated surface in South Africa, and discuss its interpretation in the context of a soft-bedded ice sheet during the retreat phase. The quality of glacial geomorphic evidence, preserved in semiarid terrains of Africa, is extremely high, and allows special insight into aspects of an ancient glaciation that has gone to completion. The Dwyka Formation evidences multiple cycles of glacial advance and retreat which include a thick succession of diamictites and heterolithic strata. Painstaking work in the 1970s and 1980s produced regional palaeogeographic reconstructions, among which complex ice flows were identified. Trunk glaciers and / or ice streams appeared on a variety of palaeogeographic maps, many of which highlighted highly complex flow structures within the ice sheet. Nowhere are complex ice flow directions more apparent that in the Northern Cape Province, which exposes an outstanding soft-sediment striated surface at Oorlogskloof. Using a combination of field observations, aerial photograph interpretations, and new digital elevation models collected from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), we map the macrostructure of the surface. The inventory of structures, which include grain flow lobes at the flanks of flutes, suggests that the surface was largely generated at the ice-sediment interface, with local evidence for internal deformation and shearing of the sediment pile. Most importantly, the aerial images reveal two features that reveal a composite history to this pavement. Firstly, flutes and grooves to have high length to width ratios, potentially implying rapid ice flow. Secondly, the UAV images reveal a discontinuous network of bulbous ridges which traverse, fold and distort the striations and flutes. The latter features are interpreted to result from bulldozing beneath a floating ice mass. The glacial extents of western Eurasian ice sheets is rather well established for the past 450 ka or so, essentially reflecting 3 major glaciations classified in continental Europe as Elsterian (MIS 12), Saalian (MIS 6), and Weichselian (MIS 2-5). This is because the western-southern geographical expansion of each glaciation became progressively less from the oldest to the next youngest glaciation. A very similar temporal pattern is also recorded in the amount of iceberg-rafted debris (IRD) in polar-subpolar marine sediment cores from all along the western European margin. As the glacial IRD input also decreased over time a direct relationship between the volume of iceberg discharge into the ocean and ice-sheet size over the adjacent continent may be inferred. By contrast, along its northern periphery, the North Eurasian shelf edge of the Barents-Kara seas, ice sheet activity there remained rather inactive before Saalian times. This latter finding is contrary to field evidence from southern and eastern Russia where the existence of several major glaciations predate both the Weichselian and the Saalian. We explain this temporal/spatial asymmetry in terrestrial glacial evolution between the Arctic and the regions farther south to have been caused by enhanced oceanic heat available in the mid-latitudes which eventually enabled significant amounts of moisture to be transported via atmospheric circulation into the European high Arctic only as late as the Saalian time. Although it is well documented that the late Paleozoic experienced one of the most severe ice ages of Earth's history, the exact timing and frequency of glaciations is still debated. This is in part due to the difficulty of accurately dating glacial deposits that are often barren, with no faunal recovery, and riddled with stratigraphic hiatuses. In order to circumvent these limitations, one alternative way to reconstruct the evolution of grounded ice volume during the Early Carboniferous is to use far-field reconstruction of eustatic sea-level fluctuations.In this study, we report on a detailed sedimentological investigation of Early Carboniferous strata from Western Libya. In the Late Paleozoic, this region was part of the Saharan platform, on the Northern margin of Gondwana, that formed a widespread, extremely low-angle, tectonically stable ramp. During the Early Carboniferous, extensive and thick exposures of siliciclastic-dominated sediments were deposited along a N-S orientated outcrop belt, parallel to depositional dip.A total of 4800m of sedimentary section was logged over a ca. 400km-long transect. Fieldwork observations and integrated subsurface data allow establishment of a detailed sequence stratigraphic framework. During the Tournaisian, Visean and Early Serpukhovian, six lowstand system tracts are identified, composed of incised valleys filled with fully amalgamated fluvial sandstones, capped by open marine packages. These incised valleys can reach a thickness of 50m. Given that they are embedded within shoreface to offshore marine deposits, total sea-level fluctuations of at least 70-80m can be estimated from these deposits. Due to the stable tectonic nature of the Saharan Platform during the Early Carboniferous, glacio-eustasy is the most-likely explanation for the origin of the observed scale of sea-level fluctuations, pointing at the onset of incipient Late Paleozoic glaciation during the earliest Visean. This is compatible with published evidence of Visean glacial deposits in Southern Sahara and South America, further inland on the Gondwanan margins. Ice sheet retreat is probably the mechanism responsible for contribution of the large volume of coarse continental clastics that initially fill the valleys exclusively with fluvial facies, preserved by the followed rapid transgression associated with ice melt.In line with paleotemperature reconstruction, our study indicate that the Late Paleozoic Ice Age has started prior to what is generally depicted in the literature. The location of the study area, on a stable passive margin, provides confidence in the mechanism controlling the incision, and the results provide improved resolution that offers an insight into the scale and frequency of glacial cycles in the Visean. The last glacial period was punctuated by episodes of warm and humid climate. These rapid climate instabilities, called Dansgaard/Oeschger (D/O) events, lasted between a few hundred and a few thousand years. The triggering mechanism of these events is still not comprehensively decoded and various hypotheses are debated including oscillations of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation driven by changes in the freshwater budget, changes in the elevation of the Laurentide ice-sheet and its effect on wind stress and sea-ice cover, as well as ocean–sea ice interactions internal to the Nordic Seas. Morever, two time periods during the last glacial show a distinctive reduction or even an absence of D/Os (~70 to 60 ka and ~26 to 16 ka). Those periods concur with minimum sea-level and are important constraints to test hypotheses for the D/O triggering mechanism as not all of them can explain this absence of D/O cyclicity. Knowledge about D/O cyclicity could be improved by extending the investigations to the penultimate glacial. However, existing records cover only parts of the interval between ~200 and 130 ka or are located far from the D/O event core location and may have missed some events. Especially marine records, which would be ideally located in the North Atlantic to detect D/O events, are often limited with respect to their age control during this period. Here, we present a new, replicated and precisely dated speleothem record from the northern rim of the European Alps covering the penultimate glacial. This area has previously proven to be highly sensitive to rapid millennial-scale climate variations. Between ~202 and ~133 ka before present our new Alpine speleothem record reveals a similar number of D/O events as compared to the last glacial period. D/O events were notably absent during three ~8 ka-long intervals, which coincided with sea-level low-stands during the penultimate glacial. Hence, our results strongly support findings from the last glacial that D/O-events were precluded during intervals when the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets reached their maximum extent. The Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS) is the largest ice stream of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS). Its area has been suffering a significant ice mass loss during the last decade, partly due to rising oceanic temperatures in the subpolar North Atlantic, which increase submarine basal melting and enhance mass discharge. This behavior demonstrates the high sensitivity of this region to oceanic changes. In parallel, a recent study suggests that the NEGIS grounding line was about 300 km behind its glacial maximum location for 15 ka during Marine Isotopic Stage (MIS) 3, despite the background glacial conditions. This retreat has been explained through a combination of atmospheric and external forcings but a modelling approach to the problem is pending. Here we study the sensitivity of the NEGIS to the oceanic forcing during the Last Glacial Period (LGP) using a three-dimensional hybrid ice-sheet-shelf model, dotated of a submarine melt parameterisation that transform oceanic temperature changes into melting at the grounding line. Our results suggest that a sufficiently high oceanic forcing could account for a NEGIS ice-margin retreat of several tens of km, potentially explaining the recently proposed NEGIS grounding-line retreat during MIS-3. The Mid Pleistocene Transition (MPT) was a global climatic event that occurred between 1250 and 700 thousand years (ky) ago. This period was characterized by a drastic change in the deep thermohaline circulation during the glacial periods that resulted in more intense and longer lasting glacial periods (changing from 40ky to 100ky cycles) and cooler sea-surface temperatures (SST). It is believed that the MPT may have been influenced by ocean-atmosphere system changes directly linked to an increased ice volume. A consensus point is that there was a pCO2 reduction which in turn reduced the atmosphere's temperature, causing the expansion of continental ice sheets. In the North Atlantic, high-resolution records documenting the MPT's impact are still limited. The present study's objective is therefore to characterize surface-water variations at the mid-latitude southern Portuguese margin during the MPT. We are generating planktonic foraminifera faunal and related SST data for Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Site U1387, retrieved from the Faro Drift in the Gulf of Cadiz, for the MPT interval from Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 20 to MIS 26 at a temporal resolution of about 500 y. Nowadays, this site is dominantly influenced by subtropical surface waters. Frist results for the interval from MIS 20 to MIS 23 indicate highly variable SSTs off southern Portugal. Warmest summer SST between 23-25ºC are recorded during interglacial MIS 21 when the fauna is dominated by tropical-subtropical species. During interglacial MIS 23, SST reached only 21ºC with warm periods being interrupted by abrupt cooling events with minimum SST of 10ºC. Glacial MIS 22 has three phases starting and ending with extreme cold events separated by an interstadial period of 14ky duration, during which SST increased up to 21ºC. During the first extreme cold event SST stayed below 10ºC for nearly 5ky. The impact of the second cold event was more extreme with SST dropping below 5ºC for 4ky. The transition from this cold event to MIS 21 interglacial conditions occurred within 1ky. Contrary to MIS 22, MIS 20 was a relative warm glacial period with SST dropping down to 9ºC only during the terminal event at the MIS 20/19 transition. So, the Site U1387 SST record reveals dominantly subtropical gyre influence interrupted by incursions of subpolar waters when the North Atlantic's subarctic front moved to southernmost position during the MPT. The high-altitudinal plateaus of Jotunheimen in central South Norway, the mountain region home of Norway's highest summits, create a unique and diverse natural environment. The specific gross morphology of Jotunheimen facilitates the occurrence of a variety of periglacial landforms ranging considerably in both dimension and age. The regional distribution of permafrost is one of the major controlling factors for the altitudinal distribution of these periglacial landforms. The largest individual features of patterned ground, undisputed the regionally most dominant periglacial landforms, are situated on terrain currently underlain by permafrost. They visually appear to be quite relict, despite the occurrence of permafrost, and the exact timing of their formation remains unknown. This example points to additional factors significantly influencing the periglacial landform assemblage, like topography, ground moisture availability, and the local deglaciation history. The lack of a regional overview regarding periglacial landforms in Jotunheimen exacerbates the need for a profound investigation of their altitudinal zonation and potential causal links to climate, permafrost, (de-)glaciation, and other factors.The compilation of a regional overview based on aerial imagery and a literature review aims, therefore, to reveal further insight into the controlling factors for and mechanisms of periglacial landform development in Jotunheimen. This shall be achieved by creating an altitudinal zonation for periglacial features and highlighting causal links between their spatial/altitudinal distribution and possible influencing factors. In an outlook to future studies this attempt may also provide more detailed information on the regional basal properties of the former Scandinavian ice sheet, the regional/local deglaciation patterns for the Jotunheimen region, and about the exact chronology of formation of the periglacial landforms studied. Improved understanding of the dynamics, extent and palaeogeography of retreating ice sheets can be accomplished by combining ice sheet modelling with the wealth of evidence they leave behind. Large volumes of constraining data exist and numerical models which can simulate entire glaciations are readily available. However, attempts to directly compare and connect empirically-based reconstructions with model-based simulations have been surprisingly rare, perhaps due to the complexity of combining the two fields and the abundance of approaches that could be taken. Here, we focus on a new method of directing ice sheet model simulations to match empirically reconstructed ice extents through time. Empirical evidence recording the behaviour of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet has been enhanced by the BRITICE-CHRONO consortium of researchers. This has been a six-year project to constrain the timing of retreat by a systematic dating programme focused on the marine-to-terrestrial transition. From two research cruises (18,000 km of geophysical data and 377 vibro- and piston cores), along with numerous investigations of stratigraphic sections on land we collected samples for dating from 914 sites from which 639 new geochronometric ages have been derived (336 radiocarbon, 156 luminescence and 157 cosmogenic). Organised into eight key transects from the shelf break to tens of kilometers onshore the pattern and pace of retreat has been compiled into an ice sheet wide reconstruction of ice extent at one thousand year times steps. We then used numerical models either forced or nudged to comply with these ice extents to yield simulations of ice sheet change thereby incorporating ice sheet physics, grounding lines, ice shelves, ice streams, and glacio isostatic adjustment and sea level. Its submarine base and exposure to warm shelf waters makes the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) highly vulnerable to climatic and oceanographic changes. Modelling infers that the WAIS has likely had a very dynamic history throughout the Neogene to the present. A complete collapse of the WAIS would result in a global sea level rise of 3.3 to 4.3 m, yet there is large uncertainty on predicting its future behavior and its role in sea level rise. Geological data on the past behavior of the WAIS are relatively sparsely and unequally distributed, in particular records of time intervals with climatic conditions similar to those expected for the near and distant future. Reconstructions and quantifications of partial or complete WAIS collapses in the past are therefore urgently needed for constraining and testing ice sheet models that aim to project future WAIS behavior.JOIDES Resolution departed from Punta Arenas in mid-January 2019 for IODP Expedition 379 to drill sites on the continental shelf and rise of the Amundsen Sea Embayment (ASE), where records are expected to represent dynamical advance and retreat processes of the central part of the WAIS. This embayment is of particular significance for studying WAIS dynamics as this sector currently experiences the largest ice mass loss in Antarctica, driven by ocean heat transport to the cavities of the main outlet glaciers. The plan was to drill a series of sites on the shelf where seismic data reveal seaward-dipping sedimentary sequences that span from the preglacial depositional phase to the most recent glacial periods. Deep-water sites on the continental rise were selected for recovering continuous records of glacially transported sediments and detailed archives of climatic and oceanographic changes throughout glacial–interglacial cycles.In this presentation, we will provide on-hand information of the recently completed drilling operation in a notoriously ice-infested environment as well as first preliminary drilling results with regard to our objectives of reconstructing the onset of glaciation in the greenhouse to icehouse transition, processes of dynamic ice sheet behavior during the Neogene and Quaternary, and ocean conditions associated with the glacial cycles. The last glacial period (LGP; ca.110-10 ka BP) was marked by the existence of abrupt climatic changes on millennial time scales. Ice sheets are thought to play an important role in their occurrence or, at least, to have responded to these climate changes. While a considerable effort has been made to investigate the dynamics and evolution of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) during this period, the Eurasian Ice Sheet (EIS) has received less attention, particularly from a modeling perspective. Here we focus on the response of the EIS by using a hybrid, three-dimensional, thermomechanical ice-sheet model that includes ice shelves and ice streams. The model is forced offline including the effects of both atmospheric and oceanic variations. Our results show that the EIS responds with enhanced ice discharge in phase with interstadial warming in the North Atlantic when forced with surface ocean temperatures. Conversely, when subsurface ocean temperatures are used, an increase in ice discharge is found both during stadials and at the beginning of the interstadials. Separating the atmospheric and oceanic effects demonstrates the major role of the ocean in controlling the dynamics of the EIS on millennial time scales. While the atmospheric forcing alone is only able to produce modest iceberg discharges, warming of the ocean leads to higher rates of iceberg discharges and major grounding line reorganizations. Our results highlight the need for stronger constraints on the local North Atlantic behavior in order to improve our understanding of the ice sheet's glacial dynamics and its implication in the occurrence of millennial-scale climate variability. In our study, we present new model simulations with a recently developed three-dimensional coupled climate – ice-sheet model (LOVECLIM – Penn State University ice-sheet model) covering the period from 240 thousand years ago (ka) to 170ka (MIS 7 to MIS 6). A series of initial sensitivity experiments reveals the presence of multiple climate – ice-sheet equilibria and run-away effects. To overcome unrealistic ice-sheet growth, we adjust several global parameters (such as climate sensitivity etc.) and enhance the basal sliding coefficient over the Hudson bay. Our simulations suggest such regional scale adjustments to affect the global response to orbital variations and to be crucial for realistically simulating the amplitude of extreme glaciation events. We also investigate the independent effects of orbital and GHG forcings during this period. More realistic simulations also show the emergence of millennial scale variability. We further test the hypothesis that millennial-scale dynamics play a pivotal role in ice-sheet growth/decay on orbital timescales.
