The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has over 40 years of experience with airborne and spaceborne sensors and is now starting to use small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) to validate products from large coverage area sensors and create new methodologies for very high resolution products. Wetlands have several functions including water storage and retention which can reduce flooding and provide continuous flow for hydroelectric generation and irrigation for agriculture. Synthetic Aperture Radar is well suited as a tool for monitoring surface water by supplying acquisitions irrespective of cloud cover or time of day. Wetlands can be subdivided into three classes: open water, flooded vegetation and upland which can vary seasonally with time and water level changes. RADARSAT-2 data from the Wide-Ultra Fine, Spotlight and Fine Quad-Pol modes has been used to map the open water in the Peace-Athabasca Delta, Alberta using intensity thresholding. We also use spotlight modes for higher resolution and the fully polarimetric mode (FQ) for polarimetric decomposition. Validation of these products will be done using a low altitude flying sUAS to generate optical georeferenced images. The article presents a study which investigates on the use of radar diagnosis to determine the subglacial condition in Dronning Maud Land in East Antarctica. The study was performed to three ground-based and pulse-modulated radar sounders, wherein two radar sounders have a centre frequency of 179MHz. The study shows that returned power decreases in the area as ice becomes thicker.

Joint observations of the all-sky camera at Resolute Bay (Nunavut, Canada) and the Polar Dual Auroral Radar Network (PolarDARN) HF radars at Rankin Inlet and Inuvik (Canada) are considered to establish radar signatures of poleward moving polar cap arcs "detaching" from the auroral oval. Common features of the events considered are enhanced power or echo occurrence in the wake of the arcs and enhanced spectral width of these echoes. When the arcs were oriented along some of the radar beams, velocity reversals at the arc location were observed with the directions of the arc-associated flows corresponding to a converging electric field. For the event of 9 December 2007, two arcs were poleward progressing almost along the central beams of the Inuvik radar at the speed close to the E×B drift of the bulk of the F-region plasma as inferred from HF Doppler velocities and from independent measurements by the Resolute Bay ionosonde. In global-scale convection maps inferred from all Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radar measurements, the polar cap arcs were often seen close to the reversal line of additional mesoscale convection cells located poleward of the normal cells related to the auroral oval. The three-dimensional structure and evolution of an isolated and stationary microburst are simulated using a time-dependent, high resolution Large-Eddy-Simulation (LES) model. The microburst is initiated by specifying a simplified cooling source at the top of the domain around 2 km a.g.l. that leads to a strong downdraft. Surface winds of the order of 30 m s-1 were obtained over a region of 500 m radius around the central point of the impinging downdraft, with the simulated microburst lasting for a few minutes. These characteristic length and time scales are consistent with results obtained from numerical simulations of microbursts using cloud-resolving models. The simulated flow replicated some of the principal features of microbursts observed by Doppler radars: in particular, the horizontal spread of strong surface winds and a ring vortex at the leading edge of the cold outflow. In addition to the primary surface outflow, the simulation also generated a secondary surge of strong winds that appears to represent a pulsation in the microburst evolution. These results highlight the capability of LES to reproduce complex phenomena like microbursts, indicating the potential usage of LES models to represent atmospheric phenomena of time and space scales between the convective scale and the microscale.
