This book comprises a selection of articles published, mainly in peer-reviewed academic journals, together with a small number of documents prepared for policy makers within the Catholic education sector in England and Wales. The texts have been reprinted almost entirely as originally published, but with some minor editing to avoid unnecessary duplication.The papers are grouped into four sections. The first is concerned with the context of state maintained Catholic schools. The second explores research into the academic performance of Catholic schools prior to 1995. The third provides data on pupils'academic and social outcomes, together with comparative studies of teachers and leadership of Catholic schools. The fourth section contains briefing papers about various aspects of state maintained Catholic education.

This book reflects the European Union's need for hard power in order to provide the military security its own citizens demand but understand too little. In this sense, the paper stems from the need to clarify the next possible evolution of the current Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU, while also introducing to the public the controversial possibility of the EU joining forces and creating its own army. Beyond the theoretical background, the paper proposes a practical, exploratory approach, which addresses data and forecasts for testing such a major administrative undertaking, while including both a qualitative and quantitative approach. Suitable for a wide range of audiences, from the young generation to scholars, research centres, development hubs, political decision-makers, or legislators, the paper aims to bring more clarity and concrete solutions to the current stages of military cooperation and integration of the EU's Member States, while opening at the same time new and relevant paths towards further and deeper research reflections in this regard.

This edited collection consists of research papers dealing with different interdisciplinary subtopics from the multifaceted interplay between language and the political sphere. Being intertwined and thus inseparable, language and politics have received a lot of scholarly attention in the last 30 years. This volume of essays and research papers is dedicated to David Hughes in honour of his contribution to research, teaching and dissemination of the music of Japan, South-East Asia, and other countries over many years. Dr Hughes'academic output from the 1970s to the present has covered many aspects of Japanese traditional music-making, in particular the min'yō (folk song) genre of which he remains the primary scholar outside Japan. His groundbreaking work has also encompassed theories of musical grammars, oral notation systems in cross-cultural perspective, as well as several papers on cultural heritage and preservation societies. This book contains a selection of nine detailed and varied research papers in the area of environment-behaviour studies. The papers are based on presentations at the 4th UK Environmental Psychology (EPUK4) conference that was held in Glasgow, Scotland in September 2005.The conference theme centred on a recurring debate in Environmental Psychology and one which had recently been ‘reopened'by Prof. Christopher Spencer (University of Sheffield), namely: “how can we ensure that the findings from high quality environment-behaviour research are put into practice in ‘real-world'applications”? This book outlines current views on the debate along with suggestions on how we might more effectively address this ‘research-practice'relationship.EPUK is an informal organisation that brings together environmental psychologists and other professionals working in the area of environment-behaviour research. EPUK4 was jointly organised by Dr. Edward Edgerton (University of Paisley) and Dr. Ombretta Romice (University of Strathclyde), and was attended by around sixty international experts in the field.

This volume explores the implications of Chinese for linguistic theory building and for the field of second language acquisition. Bringing together selected papers from the first International Symposium on Chinese Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, it sheds light upon under-documented topics in a variety of areas within theoretical and applied research. The topics covered here include competing approaches within optimality theory to phonological opacity, formal solutions to puzzles in Shanghainese morphosyntax, and different approaches to polarity items and presentational sentences in Chinese. The corpus-based approach has developed into a well established paradigm in translation studies and has been recognised as a principal reason for the revival of contrastive linguistics since the 1990s, while corpus-based contrastive and translation studies have in turn significantly expanded the scope of corpus linguistics. This book features a selection of twenty-three papers from the 2008 meeting of Using Corpora in Contrastive and Translation Studies (UCCTS), an international conference series launched to provide an international forum for the exploration of theoretical and practical issues pertaining to the creation and use of corpora in contrastive and translation studies.The papers in this collection represent the latest developments in corpus-based translation studies, corpus-based contrastive studies, parallel corpus development and bilingual lexicography. When the archive of the English philosopher and polymath Colin Wilson (1931-2013) was officially opened at the University of Nottingham, UK, in the summer of 2011, it was agreed among those present that a conference should be held there to discuss his work. In July 2016, the First International Colin Wilson Conference was staged with the Proceedings being published a year later. The success of that conference inevitably meant that a second was arranged and held two years later in July 2018.This volume—which will be of interest to scholars and fans of Wilson's work, in addition to students of philosophy and consciousness studies—contains the transcripts of the papers presented on July 6, 2018: day one of that second conference. This study offers an original and innovative collection of fresh approaches to the investigation of the concept of ugliness. It is divided into three parts: the idea of ugliness; Kantian conceptions of the ugly; and ugliness and art. The papers in all three sections deal with problems in the way that aesthetics has understood the concept of the ugly, in aesthetic experience, in fine art, and in contrast with the beautiful. These are new papers from a range of scholars from diverse philosophical backgrounds, and use the most recent literature in their areas of expertise. There is no other book available that collects the latest research in this field, and, as such, it will be a key contribution to recent and growing theoretical interest in the place of the ugly in aesthetics.

The focus of this volume in our ongoing series has shifted from the technological advances that were the topic of numerous papers in the previous book to more rigorous and empirical research, especially in the linguistics and methodology section. While the former is represented by the majority of papers, methodology still manages to surprise with new findings in often-overlooked areas, such as how to address students with impairments in English Language Teaching (ELT), the use of gesture, and the development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). The linguistics section starts out with a look at academic English as a lingua franca (ELF) practices, native and non-native English varieties and ELT, pragmatic markers and hedging, and corpora. The book offers a collection of papers that draw on contemporary developments in cultural studies in their discussions of postmillennial trends in works of Anglophone literature and media. The first section of the book, “Addressing the Theories of a New Cultural Paradigm”, comprises ten essays that present, respectively, performatist, metamodernist, digimodernist, and hypomodernist readings of selected texts in order to test the usefulness of recent theories in explorations of the new paradigm in literary, media and food studies. The papers cover a wide variety of genres, including the novel, the film, the documentary, the cookbook, the food magazine, and the food commercial, and present a number of themes which shed light on the nature of the new paradigm. The second part of the volume, “Mapping the Dynamics of a New Sensibility”, offers a wider perspective and presents seven papers that search for evidence of a new sensibility in selected examples of postmillennial texts. These contributions move beyond the frameworks of the theories explored in the first part in order to offer new perspectives in the contributors'respective fields of interest.

This book charts a significant aspect of European heritage: cemeteries. Cemeteries are nowadays considered as formal cultural sites and open-air museums attracting a great number of visitors; while cemetery records, memorial monuments, epitaph inscriptions and symbols provide useful data, attracting the interest of an increasing number of scholars from various disciplines and backgrounds. This collective volume consists of selected papers, presented at the ASCE (Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe) Conference: “Ancient Greek Art and European Funerary Art” organized by the Harokopio University of Athens-Greece on October 5-7 2017, aiming to highlight various cultural aspects of cemeteries. The authors present funerary art and its classical origin, investigate theoretical and historical approaches, plan cultural and educational routes, design technological applications concerning the use of cemeteries as cultural sites, and propose multiple ways for promoting cemetery heritage and public engagement; while the majority of the papers is based on field and archival research and is accompanied by original images. The multicultural character of death heritage is highlighted through the variety of case-studies presented in this volume, introducing different perspectives and interpretations on art, history, heritage and cultural tourism, laying the groundwork for the public discussion on our common heritage as appeared in cemeteries, appealing to both the wider public and the academic community.

Toward a Philosophical Approach to Psychiatry presents a collection of philosophical and historical papers authored by the psychiatrist Kenneth S. Kendler. Giacomo Meyerbeer was once one of the most famous of all opera composers, enjoying into the twentieth century the same universal admiration and performance as a composer like Puccini does today.Through a series of adverse factors, his reputation was seriously damaged with the resurgence of nationalism and the growing ant-Semitism in France and Germany at the end of the nineteenth century, the propagation of a Wagnerian operatic aesthetic, the decline of the bel canto vocal tradition, and the disfavour manifested towards the heroism of French grand opera. All these factors, and especially the ban on his music in Nazi Germany, meant that Meyerbeer's reputation was seriously overshadowed in the years after the Second World War. During the 1960s and 1970s, a tentative interest began to manifest itself, and with the advent of the new millennium, a growing rediscovery of his operas has been apparent. Not least in this process has been the recovery of all the composer's private papers and their scholarly editing. His life and work have been the subject of a growing number of informed studies which have enabled radical reassessment. This volume takes a fresh look at this process of rediscovery by considering the composer in terms of the primary sources (diaries and letters) now available for forming a more complete and detailed biography unclouded by prejudicial or uninformed opinions. The extraordinary nature of Meyerbeer's Jewish background and the role of this family in Prussian emancipation are also considered. Most importantly, however, his life and works are presented in a critical chronology that is fundamentally based on his own private papers, with testimony (both positive and negative) from many contemporary sources. A detailed iconography is integral to this process, and helps to bring Meyerbeer's story and music more vividly to life.

Contemporary introductions to the theme of self-knowledge too often trace its emergence in the history of philosophy to thinkers such as René Descartes and David Hume. Whereas Descartes conceives of self-knowledge as intimate and first-personal, Hume contends that it is limited to our awareness of our impressions and ideas. In point of fact, self-knowledge is a perennial theme. We may, for instance, trace the lineage of Hume and Descartes on these matters to Aristotle and Plato, respectively. This volume studies philosophical treatments of self-knowledge in the Medieval Latin West. It comprises two sets of papers; the first is taken from an author-meets-critics session on Therese Scarpelli-Cory's Aquinas on Human Self Knowledge, which advances the thesis that Aquinas's theory of self-knowledge wherein the intellect grasps itself in its activity bridges the divide between mediated and first-personal self-knowledge. The second set of papers discuss self-knowledge in terms of self-fulfilment. Authors look to Aquinas's account of how we can know when we have acquired the virtues necessary for human happiness, as well as the medieval traditions of mysticism and theology, which offer accounts of transformative self-knowledge, the fulfilment that this brings to our emotional and physical selves, and the authority to teach and counsel about what this awareness confers.

English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) research has become central in current debates in linguistics and is commonly referred to in conferences dealing with other sub-fields of sociolinguistics. This volume collects ten papers that testify to the great scope of ELF research currently being carried out through the analysis of different kinds of data in a variety of contexts and domains. The three chapters in the first part of the volume tackle computer-mediated communication, a medium that currently accounts for a great proportion of human communication. The four contributions in the second section differ with regards to the domains under investigation, and all touch upon social issues that have an impact on how language is used: from Vietnamese university students negotiating their identities in the UK to a Pakistani migrant making efforts to be understood by Italian officials. Finally, the three papers in the final part are an example of the many ELF-oriented pedagogical initiatives that have emerged in recent years across educational levels and all over the world. The introduction to the volume also situates ELF research in its current transition to a third phase in which more attention will be paid to the multilingual nature of ELF users. The proposal put forward in the introductory chapter holds that ELF has two well established fronts where more quality work will surely be carried out, and that ELF could benefit from establishing connections to other approaches to multilingualism and languaging, but without forgetting what the E in the acronym stands for.This collection of papers will be of interest to teachers and language practitioners who are curious about the ELF paradigm; researchers in ELF and in sociolinguistics and applied linguistics in general; internet linguists and computer-medaited communication experts; educational policymakers; and undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in areas such as applied linguistics, English studies, multilingualism and plurilingualism, and intercultural communication, amongst other fields.

This book includes a selection of papers in linguistics presented at the 14th Conference on British and American Studies. Its tripartite structure reflects the main topics around which the nineteen contributions cluster. The first part, “Native language profiling: explorations and findings”, displays a variety of methodological approaches aimed at highlighting syntactic, morphological, and lexico-semantic aspects of, primarily, English and Romanian. The papers in the second section, “Aspects of language change, bilingualism, and cross-linguistic variation”, bring to the fore some of the topical issues falling within the ambit of language contact, such as mixed languages, bilingualism, and code-switching, as well as contrastive investigations of language structure. It is based on papers presented at the workshop bearing the same title held at the University of Bucharest in November 2015 and is dedicated to Professor Martin Maiden of the University of Oxford in honour of his 60th birthday. This collection of essays highlights the thorny and divisive issue of the admission of women into the sacramental diaconal priesthood of the Christian Church from the Orthodox theological perspective. The contributions here stem from scientific papers presented at an international conference titled “Deaconesses, Ordination of Women and Orthodox Theology”, organized in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2015 by the Center of Ecumenical, Missiological and Environmental Studies (CEMES). They cover almost all the fields of biblical, liturgical, patristic, systematic, canonical, and historical theology. The volume's main focus is the ancient order of deaconesses, in connection with the overall issue of the ordination of women. Although most papers address the issues from an Orthodox perspective, their sober analysis can provide theological argumentation for the wider Christian community, both the Churches and Christian denominations that exclude women from the sacramental priesthood, and those that have already adopted their ordination.

In March 2017, researchers, advocates and NGOs from twelve countries came together in Rotorua, New Zealand, for the first conference of the International Coalition for the children of incarcerated parents. The Coalition had been formed the previous year to recognise that similar issues faced the children of prisoners all over the world. From the first arrest until release from prison, the system is stacked against the child. Justice systems are all about punishing individuals, and are, as one conference speaker noted, ‘child blind'.The papers in this collection cover many of the themes in the wider literature on the children of prisoners. Advocacy themes include moving towards child-friendly prison systems, using mass incarceration to influence wider social change, the effects of pre-trial detention on families, the particular issues in Hawaii, and how arrest and detention procedures harm children. A set of papers reflect contemporary research and analysis on the children of prisoners. One paper sets out ‘12 guiding principles'for working with children and families of the incarcerated. Others look at how babies and young children react to parental imprisonment, as well as children who are resilient in the face of it. Two papers consider women: one on mothers involuntarily committed to psychiatric hospital and the other examining the difficulties in maintaining family ties when a mother is sent to prison. Another contribution looks at an initiative between university and community set up to ‘expand knowledge and inspire change'for the children of prisoners. One paper examines the difficult issue of supporting families where a parent has been convicted of a sexual offence. Also discussed in this volume are the Tyro programme that works to break the cycles of self-destruction for the children of prisoners and case studies of prison staff ‘making a difference'in child and family visiting.

The volume examines syntactic complexity from an acquisitional perspective, which offers a peculiarly grounded starting point when dealing with linguistic complexity, under the assumption that what is simpler is acquired earlier than what must be thought of as complex. Connecting acquisitional data inseparably to formal linguistic analyses, it not only allows a comparison between structures at various levels in terms of complexity, but also a deeper insight into the factors determining complexity in different populations of acquirers.The book is divided into two parts following an introductory chapter. The papers in Part I consider the first language acquisition of some complex structures such as different types of passives, relative clauses, questions and classes of predicates, with a look at children's early sensitivity to seemingly complex domains, such as the Definiteness Effect and unaccusative predicates. Part II is dedicated to the acquisition of complex structures in different modes of acquisition. The papers here examine, sometimes comparatively, different conditions of language acquisition dealing with clitics, types of relative clauses or referential pronouns. The languages considered range from European Portuguese to Finnish, French, German, Italian and Romanian.

Coming to terms with Britten's music is no easy task. The complex, often contradictory language associated with Britten's style likely stems from his double interest in progressive composition and immediate connection with a broad, popular audience – an apparent paradox in the splintered musical culture of the 20th century – as well as from complicated truths in his own life, such as his love for a country that accepted neither his sexuality nor his politics. As a result, the attempt to describe his music can tell us as much about our own biases and the inadequacies of our analytic tools as it does about the music itself. Such audits of our scholarly language and strategies are vital in light of the still-murky view we have of twentieth century music. This opportunity for academic self-reflection is the reason Britten studies such as this book are so important. The essays included here challenge assumptions about musical constructs, relationships between text and music, and the influences of age, spirituality, and personal relationships on compositional technique.Part One offers nine essays originally compiled for a symposium designed to recognize the composer's unique and varied contributions to music. In November 2016 the University of Brighton hosted a one day conference entitled “The Future of Human Rights in the UK”. Legal academics and practitioners from across the UK and Ireland attended to discuss the various topical issues that arise under the title of the conference. Is it Real? is a collection of twenty-eight papers on the most challenging, provocative – and profound – topics related to the quest for real and virtual realities of vision and other senses, and realities that are either constructed or imagined. There was no school, no theory, no methodology, nor any empirical approach in semiotics which was not forced to take a position, whether implicitly or explicitly, in attempting to discuss this issue. Semiotics is a discipline dealing with signs, and, thus, it is commonly thought that if we say of something that it is a “sign”, then it is something “less” real than the thing itself to which it refers. As such, the field of problems which opens from the theme “Is it Real?” is almost endless – but also relevant. This volume presents interactive dialogue related to this question structured under six different headings: five papers on the topic of “Visual Realities”; six on “What is Real?”; five on “Textual Realities”, concentrating on realities revealed from literature or the written language through texts; five on “Constructed Realities”; three on “Virtual Realities”; and, finally, four papers on “Imagery Realities”.

Art has been as significant as text in the history of book design and production. This volume brings together seven essays that deal with a number of key presentations of time in the history of philosophy. Best described as phenomenological studies of time, the articles here address the problems and questions of temporality as they appear in the works of thinkers of the Western philosophical tradition. The innovative approaches to understanding time that all of the essays feature are grounded in careful research. The papers were originally given at the 2015 “Phenomenology of Time” Boston College Philosophy Colloquium, and thematize philosophical accounts of time, offering avenues for thinking about the role of time in psychology, cognitive studies, physics, and education. The familiar subjects that are addressed in the pieces by Manoussakis, Gay, and Floyd offer reflections on temporality of love, death, and anxiety. Biondi's essay elucidates the relationship between time and eternity. The more technical papers by Michael Kelly, as well as Kevin and Marina Marren, draw on such thinkers as Heidegger, Kant, and Husserl, tracing the relationship between conscious awareness of time and the role of temporality in pre-cognitive synthesis.

This book represents selected papers of an international conference convened by the Department of Humanities at Qatar University, Doha, in March 2013. Its theme was “Interdisciplinarity in History: An Old Method in New World Context”. Twelve out of the fifty papers presented at the conference have been thoroughly reviewed, revised and compiled in this volume. Their contributions emphasize that interdisciplinary in history has become a key term for professional historians who reject the professional identity of history based on its claimed autonomy and the distinctiveness of its research methods, and argue that this claim has seriously narrowed the intellectual horizons of the discipline in terms of both teaching and research. The chapters also stress that historical research should not be confined to political events as it was by ancient historians, but, rather, be open to other complex issues which require thorough investigation and collaboration between history and other disciplines. In this sense, interdisciplinarity in history is a process of answering questions, solving problems, or examining topics that are too broad or multifaceted to be tackled adequately by history as a discipline on its own. Therefore, history “should not be regarded as a stationary subject,” as Robinson wrote, but as a discipline that would transcend the limitations formerly imposed upon the study of the past, and integrate with other social science disciplines to widen its methodological scope and investigate many issues that had previously ignored or marginalized.

From a scientific point of view, several challenges to renewable energy come from the intermittent nature of energy sources such as wind, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal. These problems are currently being addressed with research on power electronics converters, storage systems, Artificial Intelligence techniques, new materials and production technologies, numerical analysis techniques, among others. This research endeavours to reduce costs and find alternative energy sources that are competitive with fossil fuels. Consequently, these efforts of the scientific community will contribute to improving the quality of life on the planet. This book summarises ten years of contributions to these topics, and contains a selection of the best papers presented at the International Conferences on Renewable Energy and Power Quality (ICREPQ) from 2003 to 2012. These contributions have been selected by a team of voluntary reviewers, with two to four reviewers assigned to each paper. At the end of this process only about 5% of all presented papers were selected. Considering each paper had been reviewed before, in order to be accepted for the conference, the selected papers represent “the best of the best”. In the south-east Mediterranean region, the so-called ‘Fertile Crescent', the modern world began its development at the very beginning of human civilisation. More than 7000 years ago, groups of early farmers (the Linearbandkeramik, or LBK) spread over vast areas of Europe. Their cultural characteristics comprised common choices and styles of execution, with a central meaning and functionality attached to ‘doing things a certain way', over an enormous geographical area. However, recent evidence suggests that the reality was much more varied and diverse. The central question of this book is the extent to which notions of ‘uniformity'and ‘diversity'have caused a wider shift in archaeological perspective.Using the LBK case study as a starting point, the volume brings together contributions by international specialists tackling the notion of cultural diversity and its explanatory power in archaeological analysis more generally. Through discussions of the domestic architecture, stone tool inventory, pottery traditions, landscape use and burial traditions of the LBK, this book provides a crucial reappraisal of the culture's potential for adaptability and change. Papers in the second part of the volume are devoted to archaeological case studies from around the globe in which the tension between diversity and uniformity has also proved controversial, including the Near Eastern Halaf culture, the North American Mississippian, the Pacific expansion of the Lapita culture, and the European Bell Beaker phenomenon. All provide exciting theoretical and methodological contributions on how the appreciation of cultural diversity as a whole can be moved forward. Jawdat R. Haydar (1905–2006) was a prominent Lebanese poet from Baalbek, who contributed to world literature in the English language, and was the author of several books of poetry, including Voices (1980), Echoes (1989), and Shadows (1998). In 2006, he published his last book of poems, 101 Selected Poems, at the age of 101. Haydar was the recipient of several awards, including the Lebanese Order of the Cedars, the Gold Medal of Lebanese Merit, the Croix de Grand Officier of France, and a papal medal from Pope John XXIII for his humanitarian work.This edited volume of the proceedings of the first Jawdat Haydar international conference held at the Lebanese American University on April 24 2013 comprises scholarly papers on the English-language poems of the Lebanese poet. It will appeal to both an academic and non-academic readership interested in the field of 20th century English-language world literature. This volume brings together selected papers presented during the 9th International Conference of the Association of Czech Teachers of English, titled “Teaching for Tomorrow” and hosted by the English Department of the Faculty of Science, Humanities and Education at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic. The conference brought together English Language Teaching (ELT) professionals from primary, secondary and tertiary education to discuss a variety of English as a Foreign Language (EFL)-related topics, ranging from reports on language research to viewpoints and insights on classroom practice.The contributions are grouped into three sections: a) Focus on Selected Language Topics, b) Increasing Learner Autonomy and c) Innovative Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) ideas. Re-engaging the African Diasporas: Pan-Africanism in the Age of Globalization is the second volume in the Kwame Nkrumah International Conference series, and brings together twenty selected papers presented at the Third Kwame Nkrumah International Conference held at Kwantlen Polytechnic University on August 19-21, 2014. Two premises inform this volume: (1) If the history of slavery and its vestiges divided and continue to divide the continent and its Diasporas, modern technology should be harnessed to bridge that divide, and (2) the continent's development is a boon to the development of what the African Union has dubbed Africa's “Sixth Region”. The book threads together papers that seek to give academic and intellectual impetus to tie the continent's development to that of the African Diaspora. Form and Process in Music, 1300–2014: An Analytic Sampler draws together papers delivered at the 2014 meeting of the West Coast Conference of Music Theory and Analysis. One of the most debated topics in medieval philosophy was the metaphysics of identity—that is, what accounts for the distinctness (non-identity) of different individuals of the same, specific kind and the persistence (self-identity) of the same individuals over time and in different possible situations, especially with regard to individuals of our specific kind, namely, human persons. The first three papers of this volume investigate the comparative development of positions. One problem, considered by William of Auvergne and Albert the Great, deals with Aristotle's doctrine of the active intellect and its relation to Christian philosophical conceptions of personhood. A larger set of issues on the nature and post-mortem fate of human beings is highlighted as common inquiry among Muslim philosophers and Thomas Aquinas, as well as Aquinas and the modern thinker John Locke. Finally, the last two papers offer a debate over Aquinas's exact views regarding whether substances persist identically across metaphysical “gaps” (periods of non-existence), either by nature or divine power.
