Throughout the nineteenth century, shady characters appear in French writings from one end of the literary spectrum to another. While Paris gleams through the night, the City of Lights has a darker underside with its own infrastructure, its own rules and traditions – and its own literature. In the shadows of the capital, thieves, murderers, addicts, shoplifters, seducers, and smugglers carry out their nefarious acts, pursued by detectives (both police and private) who seek to apprehend and analyze them. These novels pave the way for a new genre, the detective novel or roman polar, which gains ever-increasing popularity as the nineteenth century moves toward its close and the twentieth dawns with developments in literature and other genres. These stories are experimental by nature, and lend themselves to further innovations, both apertures (to borrow Barthes's term) and departures. In addition, the detective stories of the nineteenth century contribute to the creation of a new art in the twentieth century: they are part and parcel of the work of film, especially film noir.This volume considers literature of the criminal underworld and its encounters with society, in the city and the popular imagination. The twelve essays compiled here examine the intersections between law and literature in the nineteenth century, from the newly adjusted property laws after the Revolution of 1789 through the scientific discourse around kleptomania in the fin-de-siècle. The authors question how texts, both canonical and “paraliterary,” are inscribed into the social, political, economic and artistic dialogues of the period. Other questions come up in these textual examinations: how are real-life criminals and the spaces they inhabit translated into literary ones? How do crimes in novels reflect or produce social tensions and preoccupations around issues of gender, education, class, and ideology? And, perhaps most importantly, what does it mean to be the “author of a crime”?

The Association for Teacher Education in Europe (ATEE) is a non-profit European organisation, with the aim of enhancing the quality of teacher education in Europe and supporting the professional development of teachers and teacher educators at all levels.The contents of this book represent the best papers presented at the 2015 ATEE Spring Conference, a forum at which European teacher educators could learn from each other and also from experiences, research and ideas from outside Europe. Bernard Williams begins his skeptical look at the history of ethical theory with a reminder of where it began, with Socrates'question, “how should one live?” If ethics aims to address the question of “how one should live”, then the work of historians may just be our greatest source of what Mill called “experiments in living” or narratives about the different ways in which humans have lived. Williams claimed that distance establishes a relativism that prevents us from looking to the distant past and asking whether that is “how one should live”, or whether a particular historical practice constituted “living well.” In contrast, R.G. Collingwood claimed that it is not only possible, but necessary, to hold the beliefs of distant agents in order to avoid “scissors and paste” history, or history that makes use of inductive generalization.Surveying seven decades worth of historical writing on the conflict between the US and Japan during World War II, this book explores the ways in which historians use moral statements in their writing, and particularly in their accounts of political leadership. Specifically, it identifies six distinct modes of moral reasoning used in history, and contrasts these modes of reasoning with the Kantian, Utilitarian, and Aristotelian modes of reasoning found in traditional moral philosophy. Finally, drawing on the philosophy of history of both Williams and Collingwood, the book reconciles skepticism with the possibility of using the past to understand how one should live with the historian's need to avoid scissors and paste history.

Ethnographic museums have been fundamentally reshaped during recent decades, acknowledging contemporary cultural practices, recognising aesthetic expressions and encouraging the active involvement of indigenous participants in all processes of museum creation and administration. Despite these efforts, however, this book reveals how the institution of the museum as such continues to be haunted by its previous, restrictive ideas of the other while talking about the self. It investigates the ethnographic object and its performance in museum displays, departing from notions of haunting as expressed by Jacques Derrida and Avery Gordon to think about presence and absence and the tension between object and text. The book argues that the tension between satisfying and dissatisfying informational needs is essential to the museum context, and that the objects on display have to be arranged in familiar patterns to be recognisable as material knowledge. As such, the ethnographic museum can be nothing else but a monument to its own history, and the ethnographic object remains trapped by the limitations of its category that is inseparable from the museum setting.

Bernard Eugene Meland (1899–1993) was a leader in the pragmatic tradition of constructive theology associated with the University of Chicago. This volume contains more than forty-six previously unpublished lectures, reports, and other personal documents that Meland wrote at various times between 1937 and 1979. It is a companion volume to W. Creighton Peden's book, Life and Thought of Bernard Eugene Meland, American Constructive Theologian, 1899–1993, and is intended to give the reader a deeper understanding of Meland's methods and thought.

Sailing to Byzantium brings together ten probing and pertinent critical papers, presented at the First and Second Postgraduate Forums in Byzantine Studies, held at Trinity College Dublin on 17-18 April 2007 and 15-16 May 2008 respectively. This volume presents a selection of contributions from the week-long Cyprus Syntaxfest in 2006, which brought together research in syntax by several respected and prolific theoretical linguists from all over the world. During the six days of the Syntaxfest, work from a variety of viewpoints in modern generative grammar was presented, and the research discussed and debated followed diverse methodological paths, with the thematic focus on left peripheries in linguistic structures and (their) interface interpretation.The current collection of expanded versions of selected research presented at the Cyprus Syntaxfest reflects a wide variety of approaches to these topics; it also provides a glimpse of the rich sample of cross-linguistic data that informed the discussions of syntactic peripheries and their interface interpretation. It offers eleven studies on clausal and nominal left-peripheral phenomena and their (role in) interpretation in a variety of typologically unrelated languages. More significantly, the contributions collected here underscore the by now established importance and theoretical interest of studying the edge of constituents, whether phasal or not. In every chapter, the blueprint of a general interpretive hierarchy driving and constraining syntax is also retraced throughout.

This volume brings together a collection of papers based on presentations given at the 10th and 11th Fora for Linguistic Sharing, organised by the Young Researchers Group of the Centro de Linguística da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL) and held at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal, on the 27th and 28th November 2015 and on the 25th November 2016, respectively. The papers are authored by young researchers in linguistics and present the results of original research in two broad areas, namely text and discourse linguistics and grammar. This volume also includes a brief history of the Forum for Linguistic Sharing written by its founders, Audria Leal, Carla Teixeira, Isabelle Simões Marques and Matilde Gonçalves; a keynote article on text linguistics by Matilde Gonçalves; and a keynote article on word formation by Maria do Céu Caetano. Given that it brings together contributions from different, yet complementary, subfields of linguistics, the book will appeal to a broad readership of linguists.

From Language to Discourse contains selected texts from the 6th and 7th Linguistics Sharing Forums, which took place at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa, on 25th November 2011 and 23rd November 2012, respectively.The articles included in this volume present the results of ongoing research in different domains of linguistics, such as phonology, language acquisition, syntax, and terminology. It is important to mention that these papers should be seen as work in progress, given that the young researchers who authored them are not yet PhD degree holders. By taking a context-sensitive approach to linguistic description, this book will be of interest to scholars in various adjacent fields of research, such as (applied) linguistics, (intercultural) communication studies, media studies, political science and the sociology of globalisation, as well as to relevant higher education programmes around the world.The discipline of translation studies has made its mark by conceptualising translation as a form of cross-cultural communication that transcends asymmetrical relations of power, foregrounding issues such as (colonial) domination, (cultural) hegemony, and ideology. To date, however, there has been no compelling evidence of the linguistic implications of transnational political communication, and little research has been done to help us to understand how political discourse at the international level presupposes translation. Featuring a wealth of examples from political text and talk, each article here links contextual features to the linguistic choices of political actors. By moving beyond national and cultural boundaries, these analyses help the reader to get to grips with the discursive implications of power politics, and to open up a new debate for a novel area of studies that might be termed cross-cultural political discourse analysis.

Recent studies on the syntax and semantics of complex sentences have dealt with several challenges to the traditional boundaries between coordination and subordination. Some constructions belong to one of the two types according to syntactic criteria but relate to the other type on semantic grounds, whereas other constructions are not compatible with either the canonical syntactic or semantic tests traditionally employed to establish this distinction. Other constructions, by contrast, seem to have evolved in such a way that they now cross the divide between both types. The collection of papers in this volume delves further into the theoretical implications of previous analyses and focuses on a wide array of data from different languages, taking those challenges as a point of departure to develop innovative perspectives and to advance thought-provoking ideas.

This volume is a selection of papers presented at “Linguists of Tomorrow”, the 1st Cyprus Postgraduate Conference in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, held at the University of Cyprus on 7–8 May 2010. Current Research in African Linguistics recognizes and honors Ọladele Awobuluyi's contributions to African linguistics. The contributors, an international group of scholars, represent four generations of African linguists who have been influenced by Awobuluyi's work as a scholar and teacher. The papers are organized into three thematic sections, namely applied linguistics and sociolinguistics; phonology and morphology; and syntax and semantics and their interfaces. The wide range of topics investigated in this volume will enhance the reader's understanding of current issues in the field of African linguistics today. The conference on Karachi in 2013 was the first event arranged by a newly-created body, The Karachi Conference Foundation, designed to deliberate on all aspects of the city's life. In the last two decades, feminism has often been declared dead. One reason for this was the overwhelming success of gender and queer studies; another was supposedly nurtured by the hope of conservatives that girls and women should return to that which is traditionally perceived as “female”. This volume, which brings together the most interesting papers of the feminist exegesis section of the recent International Meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature, offers vivid proof that feminist studies did not lose their appeal to young scholars, and that there is still enough potential for fresh and interesting research in this field. This book delves into the concepts of general and spatial semiotics, discussing the differences and interactions between semiotic means of diverse types and levels. It introduces an integrative model (“the sign prism”) which unites many famous schemes of sign connection. It considers the human as a being included in a self-created semiosphere of signs and interacting with a sphere of natural signals and indexes available also to animals. The majority of the text is devoted to spatial semiotics, and its distinctions from temporal ways of sign connection. Its specific categories and particular visual-spatial codes are considered here as the peculiar means of communication and thinking. An essential feature of the book is the application of the author's concepts of spatial semiotics to research of structures and the historical changes of visual arts.

This volume contains 17 articles, developed from papers that were chosen from among the 44 presentations of work on NooJ presented at the 2013 International NooJ Conference in Saarbrücken in June, 2013.NooJ is a linguistic development environment that allows linguists to formalize a wide gamut of linguistic phenomena, and then test, adapt, share and accumulate each elementary description to build linguistic “modules”, that is, structured libraries of linguistic resources. NooJ is also used as a corpus processor that can launch sophisticated queries over large corpora of texts, in order to produce various results, including concordances, statistical analyses, information extraction, and automatic translation.NooJ is used in many research centers; it has recently been endorsed by the European Metashare CESAR Project, and is now available as an open source software at the METASHARE repository. NooJ is also used by a growing number of software companies to construct various Natural Language Processing applications.

The volume explores the ways that 20th and 21st century art, drama, fiction and philosophy have been influenced and inspired by the work of the Bloomsbury Group and their London milieu. By comparing and contrasting the artistic, philosophical and literary works of the Bloomsbury Group with later artists, writers and thinkers, such as the Singh Twins, Harold Bloom, C. K. In the summer of 2008, the twelfth in a series of biennial conferences on the Literature of Region and Nation was held at Aberdeen University in the North-East of Scotland. Over fifty scholars, representing no fewer than twenty different countries, convened for the occasion; and twenty-two of the papers presented are included in this volume.As at previous conferences in the series, the papers range widely in approach, in subject-matter and in geographical coverage: readers of this book will find explorations of literature from all five continents. The papers are arranged thematically: the central concepts of region and nation are examined in the first section; and subsequent sets of papers go on to consider literary and pictorial representations of places and peoples, literature of diaspora and exile (a keynote topic of the conference), the use of language (particularly non-standard languages) in literary texts, and artistic interactions between cultures. All the papers have been peer-reviewed, and some extensively revised. The collection demonstrates the vitality of scholarship in the field of regional literary studies.

NooJ is both a corpus processing tool and a linguistic development environment: it allows linguists to formalize several levels of linguistic phenomena: orthography and spelling, lexicons for simple words, multiword units and frozen expressions, inflectional, derivational and productive morphology, local, structural syntax and transformational syntax. For each of these levels, NooJ provides linguists with one or more formal tools specifically designed to facilitate the description of each phenomenon, as well as parsing tools designed to be as computationally efficient as possible. This approach distinguishes NooJ from most computational linguistic tools, which provide a single formalism that should describe everything. As a corpus processing tool, NooJ allows users to apply sophisticated linguistic queries to large corpora in order to build indices and concordances, annotate texts automatically, perform statistical analyses, etc.NooJ is freely available and linguistic modules can already be downloaded for Acadian, Arabic, Armenian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, French, English, German, Hebrew, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.The present volume contains papers from the 2008 International NooJ conference which was held 8–10 June 2008 in Budapest. While the focus of the Budapest conference was on making NooJ compatible with other applications, the papers vary with respect to whether they regard Natural Language Processing (NLP) as a research goal or as a tool. However, they all present a slightly different problem either in the field of NLP, or in one that can be solved using NLP, or present a new development in the tool itself. The range of problems dealt with in the volume is quite varied, which will hopefully enable the readers to find contributions that are relevant to their field of interest.

This collection was compiled by an international group of scholars in recognition of Professor Yiwola Awoyale's contributions to African language and linguistic studies. Based at University of Pennsylvania, Professor Awoyale is particularly celebrated as a great field linguist, who pays special attention to data and data documentation. To mark the centenary of Mervyn Peake's birth, the Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales and Fantasy (University of Chichester) organized an international conference in July 2011 entitled “Mervyn Peake and the Fantasy Tradition.”Papers were presented by scholars, artists, and writers from all over the world, and here we have a selection of them. No other comparable collection of essays on Peake has ever been published.The contributors take a wide variety of approaches to Peake's work – not just the Gormenghast trilogy but also his books for children, his poetry, and his art. The theory of language and speech is represented not only in synchrony, but in diachrony, in the comparative and typological aspects of languages from various groups, including non-literate Yenisei languages. The 60th anniversary of the publication of George Kelly's The Psychology of Personal Constructs was marked, in 2015, by the 21st International Congress on Personal Construct Psychology. His two volume work set out personal construct theory as a radical new approach to psychology. Although Kelly was a clinical psychologist, personal construct psychology has had an extraordinarily broad range of influence and application, extending beyond the clinical setting to include areas as diverse as education, organizational and management development, social psychology, the arts, law and politics. It presaged constructivist developments in many spheres of knowledge, and its innovative research methods have been used in a vast number of studies focussed on the exploration of personal and interpersonal meaning.The 21st International Congress was held in the UK at the University of Hertfordshire, forty years after the first such congress. This volume presents contributions by many of the Congress's delegates, whose chapters reflect the diversity of contemporary applications of personal construct psychology, and the continuing relevance and vitality of Kelly's ideas and methods.

The present volume is intended as a scientific conversation between pioneering research and the traditionally leading disciplines of medievalism. With that aim, the collection presents a selection of crucial essays to add to contemporary discussion which, however convergent and synchronous in approach, also pull in heterogeneous distinct ways and enhance the multiple perspectives which are currently embraced in the study of English medievalism. The chapters, fifteen in all, constitute a peer-reviewed selection of papers presented at the 22nd International Conference of the Spanish Society for Mediaeval English Language and Literature (SELIM), which brought together a large number of scholars worldwide, and was held at the Department of Modern Languages of the University of La Rioja in 2010. A brief glance at the book's contents evinces the manifestly plural ways in which the English Middle Ages, the mesmerising media tempestas, are being addressed in current critical debate, from the diverse areas of linguistics, literature, teaching methodology and translation. In all, the book becomes exceptional witness to all these developments, being not foolhardy to predict that the dark old ages provide, as ever, foundations for stimulating new highlights and ideas.

Death has been deemed the “great equalizer,” but each journey towards our shared, ultimate fate is unique. The length of our lives, the quality of our last days, how our deaths are perceived by others, and the handling of our remains are governed by nature and many socio-cultural factors. Unequal Before Death is an edited collection that addresses inequalities surrounding death from the perspectives of scholars in a wide range of humanistic and social science disciplines, including art history, anthropology, Film and media studies, political science, popular culture, psychology, religion, sociology, and statistics. The majority of the chapters of this interdisciplinary anthology are revised versions of papers presented at the second Austin H. Kutscher Memorial Conference, entitled “Unequal Before Death,” organized by the Columbia University Seminar on Death in March 2010 and attended by leading experts in academia, healthcare and the not-for-profit sector. The purpose of this volume is to bring attention to the many inequalities affecting the end of life experience and to encourage collaborative research and action that can improve the experience for the dying and those around them. This volume does not question the truism of death as the ultimate equalizer but rather, seeks to explore the many ways in which the final journey is not equal.

Every year since 2002, the linguistic development environment NooJ has been enhanced with new online features that allow social scientists to develop new applications and explore new domains. The 2011 conference was no exception and the arrival of v3.0 has brought many more features and a new range of applications, from the analysis of ancient Arabic and old English texts to the analysis of conversations held by the Mars500 mission's astronauts. At the 2011 conference, members of the European Meta-Net CESAR project announced that NooJ will soon be available Open Source and will become the de-facto standard tool for Corpus processing in European research in Social Science.Today, NooJ is used as a research tool in over 30 academic and research centers in the world and there are NooJ modules available for over 20 languages. The international NooJ conference is organized every year; 50 participants present their work in the domains of Linguistic formalization, Corpus processing and Natural Language Processing applications.The present volume contains a selection of papers from the NooJ 2011 International Conference which was held from 13–15 June 2011 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. This volume presents problems dealing with machine translation, information extraction, processing of multi-word units, automatic disambiguation, semantic analysis, and psychological and literature analysis of various corpora.

Given the current era of global turmoil and strained relations between peoples of diverse national and cultural origins, there has never been a greater need for intercultural education than there is today. This edited volume is in honour of Jagdish Gundara, a renowned pioneer in the field, and brings together contributions from experienced educators and researchers who focus on problematic aspects of intercultural education, as well as on crucial issues related to different regional contexts. Contributors draw upon national, comparative and international perspectives, in addition to theoretical and empirical studies, to inform thinking and discussion in relation to innovative policies and pedagogies. The content of the book will be found to be both challenging and stimulating. Accordingly, it will be welcomed by graduate students and researchers, as well as educators and policy-makers both nationally and across the globe. The present volume On Words and Sounds is a collection of selected papers from PLM 2009. The Poznań Linguistic Meeting (PLM) is an annual international general linguistics conference. The book consists of fifteen articles, each of which can be read separately or in relation to others. The book will definitely appeal to the academic readership interested in linguistic disciplines such as: phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and clinical linguistics. Collectively, the contributions investigate the interrelationships among those disciplines as well as between language and music. The central aim for the scholars was to explore the PLM 2009 leitmotif “Variants, Variability, Variation” and show that the complete study of language involves diversified frameworks often rooted in interdisciplinary approaches.

This volume contains a variety of essays about Florida literature and history by scholars from across the state representing every kind of institution of higher learning, from community colleges to small liberal arts institutions to large universities. The essays in the first section, ‘Pedagogy', focus on the college classroom and the challenges facing institutions of higher learning in Florida. The essays in ‘Old Florida'explore the state's varied and unique geographies. The final section, ‘Contemporary Florida', continues to point to the state's distinctive sense of place while also locating Florida within larger literary, cultural, and political traditions.

This collection of essays is borne out of the 17th Annual Interdisciplinary German Studies Conference at the University of California, Berkeley. The essays gathered here cover a broad range of topics moving from intersections between the occult and the political, to the entanglement of conceptions of the magical, modernity, media, and aesthetics.The first two essays primarily rely on historical analysis and present a wealth of original research. One chronicles the construction of the witch in Early Modern print media, while the other unfolds the complex relationship of an infighting Third Reich with a multifaceted occult deemed at once fascinating and menacing. The third essay in the collection combines critical, literary, and feminist theories in order to address the magical as an aspect of the fairy tale – a theme in the works of Jelinek and Adorno – and as a challenge to Enlightenment reason. The next two essays, influenced heavily by narratology and semiotics, present close readings of 19th century novellas that question the nexus of mediality and perception, magic and narrative structure. The first of these two essays deals with the liminality of the marionette as it is caught between its mechanical and marvelous qualities in E. T. A. Hoffman's Rat Krespel (Councilor Krespel), while the latter addresses the collapse of reality mirrored by the magical collapse of metaphor in Theodor Storm's Pole Poppenspäler (Paul the Puppeteer). The last essay rounds out the compilation with a focus on new media. With close analyses of the films in Lang's Mabuse trilogy, this essay charts their relation to the enchantment and disenchantment of the medium of film.

In October 2005 a conference honoring the contributions of Sinclair Lewis to Midwest and American culture and celebrating the friendship between Sinclair Lewis and Ida K. Compton was held at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Sinclair Lewis would no doubt have been flattered, and perhaps a bit surprised by the breadth of this conference in his honor. The fact that scholars, writers, students and readers gathered to discuss his work and its broader influence would have pleased him. He would have learned that readers still found stimulus for serious thought in his writing, and that his works can serve as a springboard to discussion of today's societal issues, some of which might surprise him considerably.The papers selected from the conference entitled The American Village in a Global Setting consider elements of Lewis'world through today's lens. In Part I, his version of community is compared to that documented in other ways, including architecture and television. Scholars address issues such as anti-Semitism, theocratic communities, the Irish, and outdoor life. In Part II, the concept of community is expanded to the visions of other authors including his contemporaries, such as Martha Ostenso, Josephine Donovan, and Willa Cather, as well as more recent writers. In Part III, today's social and cultural issues in America are addressed, expressing the global and interdisciplinary intent of the conference. And, last, Part IV continues the global theme, addressing international communities and pedagogical philosophies through film and literature.

This volume is the outgrowth of a conference aimed at situating questions of social justice within the broad social-historical context of our times as outlined by Benjamin Barber in the international bestseller Jihad vs. McWorld. In it, 15 contributors from across the academic spectrum grapple with questions of inequality, culture, communication, education, language, representation, democracy, poverty and power in a variety of local, global, and cross-cultural contexts that extend from North America to Japan, the Middle Ages to Post-Modernity. The chapters in this book illustrate a range of cutting edge research in language and gender studies, with contributions from a number of internationally recognised experts. The three themes, femininity, feminism and gendered discourse are central to research in language and gender, and the book thus makes a valuable contribution to a number of current debates.Femininity comprises a central aspect of gender performance and the process of “gendering” individuals is on-going and unavoidable. For many people, the word “femininity” has associations with “frilly pink party dresses,” with demureness, deference, and lack of power and influence. The first section of this book demonstrates some alternative conceptions of femininity, and a range of ways in which femininity is performed in different contexts and cultures. The analyses illustrate that we are all continually performing aspects of femininity (and masculinity) in flexible, dynamic, ambiguous, predictable and unpredictable ways.Language and gender research has a long tradition of engagement with the political, and specifically with feminism and feminist goals. The chapters in the second section of this book demonstrate the value of identifying gendered patterns in order to challenge their potentially repressive effects in social interaction in a range of spheres. The researchers analyse contemporary international evidence of sexism in language use, including material from Japanese spam emails expressing sexual desire, and from media reporting on male and female candidates in the 2007 French elections.The final section of this book focuses on the different ways in which we negotiate our gender through discourse. Gender is just one of many facets of our intrinsically hybridized social identities. Nevertheless, it is a very significant facet, a salient dimension in everyday life, with a pervasive social influence on everything we do and say. Interaction is typically viewed through “gendered” spectacles much of the time. The chapters in the third section focus in detail on diverse ways in which gender is constructed through discourse, examining the interaction between individual agency and the larger constraining social structures, including socio-cultural norms, within which that agency is enacted.Finally, the different contributions in this book represent research from a multiplicity of geographic and cultural backgrounds, supporting efforts to internationalise language and gender research, and to raise awareness of empirical studies undertaken in a wide range of linguistic and cultural contexts.

This book reflects the European Union's need for hard power in order to provide the military security its own citizens demand but understand too little. In this sense, the paper stems from the need to clarify the next possible evolution of the current Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU, while also introducing to the public the controversial possibility of the EU joining forces and creating its own army. Beyond the theoretical background, the paper proposes a practical, exploratory approach, which addresses data and forecasts for testing such a major administrative undertaking, while including both a qualitative and quantitative approach. Suitable for a wide range of audiences, from the young generation to scholars, research centres, development hubs, political decision-makers, or legislators, the paper aims to bring more clarity and concrete solutions to the current stages of military cooperation and integration of the EU's Member States, while opening at the same time new and relevant paths towards further and deeper research reflections in this regard.
