In this work, a semiactive electromagnetic vibration absorber has been developed based on a proposed electromagnetic stiffness adjustable spring model, which presents a new solution for adjusting stiffness in the field of vibration absorber devices. Simulation study on the electromagnetic spring has been performed to determine the structural parameter of the semiactive vibration absorber. An experimental rig is also built up to investigate its practical vibration control effectiveness. Firstly, the finite element model of the test bench is used to analyze its vibration characteristics. Then, the vibration reduction effect is predicted through the simulation analysis, from which the optimal control positions are found. Finally, the experimental studies are also conducted, and the results show that this semiactive electromagnetic vibration absorber has a frequency adjustment range from 21 Hz to 25 Hz, in which considerable vibration reduction from 5 dB to 10 dB can be achieved.

Recently, there have been a number of research activities on spur gears with asymmetric teeth. The benefits of asymmetric gears are: higher load capacity, reduced bending and contact stress, lower weight, lower dynamic loads, reduced wear depths on tooth flank, higher reliability, and higher efficiency. Each of the benefits can be obtained through asymmetric teeth designed correctly. Gears operate in several conditions, such as inappropriate lubrication, excessive loads and installation problems. In working conditions, damage can occur in tooth surfaces due to excessive loads and unsuitable operating conditions. One of the important parameters of the tooth is stiffness, which is found to be reduced proportionally to the severity of the defect by asymmetric tooth design as described in this paper. The estimation of gear stiffness is an important parameter for determining loads between the gear teeth when two sets of teeth are in contact. In this paper, a 2-D tooth model is developed for finite elements analysis. A novel formula is derived from finite element results in order to estimate tooth stiffness depending on the tooth number and pressure angle on the drive side. Tooth stiffness for spur gears with asymmetric teeth is calculated and the results were compared with well known equations in literature.

In this paper, the stiffness of 3-PPR planar parallel manipulator (PPM) is analyzed with the consideration of nonlinear actuation compliance. The characteristics of the stiffness matrix pertaining to the planar parallel manipulators are analyzed and discussed. Graphic representation of the stiffness characteristics by means of translational and rotational stiffness mapping is developed. The developed method is illustrated with an unsymmetrical 3-PPR PPM, being compared with its structure-symmetrical counterpart.Copyright © 2012 by ASME

An important aspect in wind-turbine technology nowadays is to reduce the uncertainties related to blade dynamics by the improvement of the quality of numerical simulations of the fluid-structure interaction process. A fundamental step in that direction is the implementation of structural models capable of capturing the complex features of innovative prototype blades, so that they can be tested at realistic full-scale conditions with a reasonable computational cost. To this end, we developed a code based on a modified implementation of the variational-asymptotic beam sectional (VABS) technique proposed by Hodges et al. VABS has the capacity of reducing the geometrical complexity of the blade section into a stiffness matrix for an equivalent beam, allowing accurate modeling of the 3D structure of the blade as a 1D finite-element problem. In this paper, we report some recent results we have obtained by applying our code to full-scale composite laminate wind-turbine blades, analyzing the fundamental vibrational modes and the stress load in normal operational conditions.
