The recent transition from decelerated to accelerated expansion can be seen as a reflection (or "bounce") in the connection variable, defined by the inverse comoving Hubble length ($b=\dot a$, on-shell). We study the quantum cosmology of this process. We use a formalism for obtaining relational time variables either through the demotion of the constants of Nature to integration constants, or by identifying fluid constants of motion. We extend its previous application to a toy model (radiation and $\Lambda$) to the realistic setting of a transition from dust matter to $\Lambda$ domination. In the dust and $\Lambda$ model two time variables may be defined, conjugate to $\Lambda$ and to the dust constant of motion, and we work out the monochromatic solutions to the Schr\"odinger equation representing the Hamiltonian constraint. As for their radiation and $\Lambda$ counterparts, these solutions exhibit "ringing", whereby the incident and reflected waves interfere, leading to oscillations in the amplitude. In the semi-classical approximation we find that, close to the bounce, the probability distribution becomes double-peaked, one peak following a trajectory close to the classical limit but with a Hubble parameter slightly shifted downwards, the other with a value of $b$ stuck at its minimum $b=b_\star$. Still closer to the transition, the distribution is better approximated by an exponential distribution, with a single peak at $b=b_\star$, and a (more representative) average $b$ biased towards a value higher than the classical trajectory. Thus, we obtain a distinctive prediction for the average Hubble parameter with redshift: slightly lower than its classical value when $z\approx 0$, but potentially much higher than the classical prediction around $z\sim 0.64$, where the bounce most likely occurred. A cosmological model with a time-varying mass of electrons seems a promising solution for the so-called Hubble tension. We examine the big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) constraints on the time-varying electron mass model, because a larger electron mass gives rise to the smaller neutron decay rate which could affect the light element abundance. Additionally, different inferred cosmological parameters, primarily baryon asymmetry, to keep the cosmic background power spectrum unchanged could affect the abundance of light element. We find that the predicted helium fraction becomes larger and the deuterium abundance becomes smaller as the electron mass at the BBN time becomes larger. Thus, we conclude that an acceptable electron mass at the BBN time would be only approximately 1% greater than the current electron mass., Comment: version published in Phys. Rev. The next generation of cosmological observations will be sensitive to small deviations from a pure power law in the primordial power spectrum of the curvature perturbations. In the context of slow-roll inflation, these deviations are expected and correspond to the so-called running of the spectral index. Their measurement would bring as much information as the discovery of deviations from scale invariance. However, robust parameter inference requires to marginalize over any possible higher order uncertainties, which have been, up to now, not fully determined. We tackle this issue by deriving the inflationary scalar and tensor slow-roll power spectra at next-to-next-to-next to leading order (N3LO), fully expanded around an observable pivot wavenumber, for all single field inflationary models having minimal and non-minimal kinetic terms. We discuss new consistency relations for single field models of inflation capable of generating primordial black holes (PBH), and their observational implications for CMB $\mu$-space distortions. These inflationary models include a short period of non-attractor evolution: the scale-dependent profile of curvature perturbation is characterized by a pronounced dip, followed by a rapid growth leading to a peak responsible for PBH formation. We investigate the squeezed and the collapsed limits of three and four point functions of curvature perturbation around the dip, showing that they satisfy consistency relations connecting their values to the total amplification of the curvature spectrum, and to the duration of the non-attractor era. Moreover, the corresponding non-Gaussian parameters are scale-dependent in proximity of the dip, with features that again depend on the amplification of the spectrum. For typical PBH scenarios requiring an order ${\cal O}(10^7)$ enhancement of the spectrum from large towards small scales, we generally find values $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm sq}\,=\,{\cal O}(10)$ and $\tau_{\rm NL}^{\rm col}\,=\,{\cal O}(10^3)$ in a range of scales that can be probed by CMB $\mu$-space distortions. Using these consistency relations, we carefully analyze how the scale-dependence of non-Gaussian parameters leads to characteristic features in $\langle \mu T \rangle$ and $\langle \mu \mu \rangle$ correlators, providing distinctive probes of inflationary PBH scenarios that can be tested using well-understood CMB physics., Comment: 27 Pages + Appendices, 15 Figures

Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity molecular tritium gas source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter around the end point at 18.57 keV. The analysis is sensitive to a local relic neutrino overdensity ratio of η < 9.7 × 1010/α (1.1 × 1011/α) at a 90% (95%) confidence level with α = 1 (0.5) for Majorana (Dirac) neutrinos. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the end point accounting for relic neutrino captures in the tritium source reveals no significant overdensity. This work improves the results obtained by the previous neutrino mass experiments at Los Alamos and Troitsk. We furthermore update the projected final sensitivity of the KATRIN experiment to η < 1 × 1010/α at 90% confidence level, by relying on updated operational conditions

It was recently shown that a powerful beam of radio/microwave radiation sent out to space can produce detectable back-scattering via the stimulated decay of ambient axion dark matter. This echo is a faint and narrow signal centered at an angular frequency close to half the axion mass. In this article, we provide a detailed analytical and numerical analysis of this signal, considering the effects of the axion velocity distribution as well as the outgoing beam shape. In agreement with the original proposal, we find that the divergence of the outgoing beam does not affect the echo signal, which is only constrained by the axion velocity distribution. Non-gravitational interaction between dark matter and dark energy has been considered in a spatially flat Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) universe. The interaction rate is assumed to be linear in the energy densities of dark matter and dark energy and it is also proportional to the Hubble rate of the FLRW universe. This kind of interaction model leads to an autonomous linear dynamical system, and depending on the coupling parameters, could be solved analytically by calculating the exponential of the matrix, defining the system. We show here that such interaction rate has a very deep connection with some well known cosmological theories. We then investigate the theoretical bounds on the coupling parameters of the interaction rate in order that the energy densities of the dark sector remain positive throughout the evolution of the universe and asymptotically converge to zero at very late times. We provide a new extension of general relativity (GR) which has the remarkable property of being more constrained than GR plus a cosmological constant, having one less free parameter. This is implemented by allowing the cosmological constant to have a consistent space-time variation, through coding its dynamics in the torsion tensor. We demonstrate this mechanism by adding a `quasi-topological' term to the Einstein action, which naturally realizes a dynamical torsion with an automatic satisfaction of the Bianchi identities. Moreover, variation of the action with respect to this dynamical $\Lambda$ fixes it in terms of other variables, thus providing a scenario with less freedom than general relativity with a cosmological constant. Once matter is introduced, at least in the homogeneous and isotropic reduction, $\Lambda$ is uniquely determined by the field content of the model. We make an explicit construction using the Palatini formulation of GR and describe the striking properties of this new theory. We also highlight some possible extensions to the theory. Inserting a varying Lambda in Einstein's field equations can be made consistent with the Bianchi identities by allowing for torsion, without the need to add scalar field degrees of freedom. In the minimal such theory, Lambda is totally free and undetermined by the field equations in the absence of matter. Inclusion of matter ties Lambda algebraically to it, at least when homogeneity and isotropy are assumed, i.e. when there is no Weyl curvature. We show that Lambda is proportional to the matter density, with a proportionality constant depending on the equation of state. Unfortunately, the proportionality constant becomes infinite for pure radiation, ruling out the minimal theory prima facie despite of its novel internal consistency. It is possible to generalize the theory still without the addition of kinetic terms, leading to a new algebraically-enforced proportionality between Lambda and the matter density. Lambda and radiation may now coexist in a form consistent with Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, though this places strict constraints on the single free parameter of the theory, $\theta$. In the matter epoch Lambda behaves just like a dark matter component. Its density is proportional to the baryonic and/or dark matter, and its presence and gravitational effects would need to be included in accounting for the necessary dark matter in our Universe. We study inflationary universes with an SU(3) gauge field coupled to an inflaton through a gauge kinetic function. Although the SU(3) gauge field grows at the initial stage of inflation due to the interaction with the inflaton, nonlinear self-couplings in the kinetic term of the gauge field become significant and cause nontrivial dynamics after sufficient growth. We investigate the evolution of the SU(3) gauge field numerically and reveal attractor solutions in the Bianchi type I spacetime. In general cases where all the components of the SU(3) gauge field have the same magnitude initially, they all tend to decay eventually because of the nonlinear self-couplings. Therefore, the cosmic no-hair conjecture generically holds in a mathematical sense. Practically, however, the anisotropy can be generated transiently in the early universe, even for an isotropic initial condition. Moreover, we find particular cases for which several components of the SU(3) gauge field survive against the nonlinear self-couplings. It occurs due to flat directions in the potential of a gauge field for Lie groups whose rank is higher than one. We derive constraints on scalar field theories coupled to gravity by using recently developed positivity bounds in the presence of gravity. It is found that a canonically-normalized real scalar cannot have an arbitrarily flat potential unless some new physics enters well below the Planck scale. An upper bound on the scale of new physics is determined by loop corrections to the self-energy. The Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) is expected to be a key observable for Gravitational Wave (GW) interferometry. Its detection will open a new window on early universe cosmology and on the astrophysics of compact objects. Using a Boltzmann approach, we study the angular anisotropies of the GW energy density, which is an important tool to disentangle the different cosmological and astrophysical contributions to the SGWB. Anisotropies in the cosmological background are imprinted both at its production, and by GW propagation through the large-scale scalar and tensor perturbations of the universe. The first contribution is not present in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation (as the universe is not transparent to photons before recombination), causing an order one dependence of the anisotropies on frequency. Moreover, we provide a new method to characterize the cosmological SGWB through its possible deviation from a Gaussian statistics. The recently proposed chameleonic extension of bigravity theory, by including a scalar field dependence in the graviton potential, avoids several fine-tunings found to be necessary in usual massive bigravity. In particular it ensures that the Higuchi bound is satisfied at all scales, that no Vainshtein mechanism is needed to satisfy solar-system experiments, and that the strong coupling scale is always above the scale of cosmological interest all the way up to the early universe. This paper extends the previous work by presenting a stable example of cosmology in the chameleon bigravity model. We find a set of initial conditions and parameters such that the derived stability conditions on general flat Friedmann background are satisfied at all times. The evolution goes through radiation dominated, matter dominated, and de Sitter eras. We argue that the parameter space allowing for such a stable evolution may be large enough to encompass an observationally viable evolution. The initial singularity is the most troubling feature of the standard cosmology, which quantum effects are hoped to resolve. In this paper, we study quantum cosmology with conformal (Weyl) invariant matter. We show it is natural to extend the scale factor to negative values, allowing a large, collapsing Universe to evolve across a quantum "bounce" into an expanding Universe like ours. We compute the Feynman propagator for Friedmann-Robertson-Walker backgrounds exactly, identifying curious pathologies in the case of curved (open or closed) universes. We then include anisotropies, fixing the operator ordering of the quantum Hamiltonian by imposing covariance under field redefinitions and again finding exact solutions. We show how complex classical solutions allow one to circumvent the singularity while maintaining the validity of the semiclassical approximation. The simplest isotropic universes sit on a critical boundary, beyond which there is qualitatively different behavior, with potential for instability. Additional scalars improve the theory's stability. Finally, we study the semiclassical propagation of inhomogeneous perturbations about the flat, isotropic case, at linear and nonlinear order, showing that, at least at this level, there is no particle production across the bounce. Gamma-ray experiments seeking to detect evidence of dark matter annihilation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies require knowledge of the distribution of dark matter within these systems. We analyze the effects of flattening on the annihilation (J) and decay (D) factors of dwarf spheroidal galaxies with both analytic and numerical methods. Flattening has two consequences: first, there is a geometric effect as the squeezing (or stretching) of the dark matter distribution enhances (or diminishes) the J-factor; second, the line of sight velocity dispersion of stars must hold up the flattened baryonic component in the flattened dark matter halo. We provide analytic formulae and a simple numerical approach to estimate the correction to the J- and D-factors required over simple spherical modeling. The formulae are validated with a series of equilibrium models of flattened stellar distributions embedded in flattened dark-matter distributions. We compute corrections to the J- and D-factors for the Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies under the assumption that they are all prolate or all oblate and find that the hierarchy of J-factors for the dwarf spheroidals is slightly altered (typical correction factors for an ellipticity of $0.4$ are $0.75$ for the oblate case and $1.6$ for the prolate case). We demonstrate that spherical estimates of the D-factors are very insensitive to the flattening and introduce uncertainties significantly less than the uncertainties in the D-factors from the other observables for all the dwarf spheroidals (for example, ${}^{+10\mathrm{\,percent}}_{-3\mathrm{\,percent}}$ for a typical ellipticity of $0.4$). We conclude by investigating the spread in correction factors produced by triaxial figures and provide uncertainties in the J-factors for the dwarf spheroidals using different physically-motivated assumptions for their intrinsic shape and axis alignments. We study dressed inflation with a cuscuton and find a novel exact power-law solution. It is well known that the conventional power-law inflation is inconsistent with the Planck data. In contrast to this standard lore, we find that power-law inflation with a cuscuton can be reconciled with the Planck data. Generic black hole binaries radiate gravitational waves anisotropically, imparting a recoil, or kick, velocity to the merger remnant. If a component of the kick along the line of sight is present, gravitational waves emitted during the final orbits and merger will be gradually Doppler shifted as the kick builds up. We develop a simple prescription to capture this effect in existing waveform models, showing that future gravitational wave experiments will be able to perform direct measurements, not only of the black hole kick velocity, but also of its accumulation profile. In particular, the eLISA space mission will measure supermassive black hole kick velocities as low as ~500 km/s, which are expected to be a common outcome of black hole binary coalescence following galaxy mergers. The code provides a comprehensive toolbox to (i) study the evolution of the black-hole spins along their precession cycles, (ii) perform gravitational-wave-driven binary inspirals using both orbit-averaged and precession-averaged integrations, and (iii) predict the properties of the merger remnant through fitting formulas obtained from numerical-relativity simulations. precession is a ready-to-use tool to add the black-hole spin dynamics to larger-scale numerical studies such as gravitational-wave parameter estimation codes, population synthesis models to predict gravitational-wave event rates, galaxy merger trees and cosmological simulations of structure formation. precession provides fast and reliable integration methods to propagate statistical samples of black-hole binaries from/to large separations where they form to/from small separations where they become detectable, thus linking gravitational-wave observations of spinning black-hole binaries to their astrophysical formation history. The code is also a useful tool to compute initial parameters for numerical-relativity simulations targeting specific precessing systems. precession can be installed from the python Package Index, and it is freely distributed under version control on github, where further documentation is provided.

We present a novel approach for setting initial conditions on the mode functions of the Mukhanov Sazaki equation. These conditions are motivated by minimisation of the renormalised stress-energy tensor, and are valid for setting a vacuum state even in a context where the spacetime is changing rapidly. Moreover, these alternative conditions are potentially observationally distinguishable. Memory effects of gravitational waves from astronomical events or primordial universe might have the information of new physics. It is intriguing to observe that the memory effect exists in electrodynamics as a net momentum kick, while the memory effect in gravity appears as a net relatively displacement. In particular, Winicour has shown that the B-mode memory, which characterizes parity odd global distribution of memory, does not exist. We study the memory effect in axion electrodynamics and find that the B-mode memory effect can exist provided the existence of coherently oscillating axion background field. Moreover, we examine the detectability of the axion dark matter using this effect. We study the evolution of photon polarization during the photon-axion conversion process with focusing on the magnetic field configuration dependence. Most previous studies have been carried out in a conventional model where a network of magnetic domains is considered and each domain has a constant magnetic field. We investigate a more general model where a network of domains is still assumed, but each domain has a helical magnetic field. We find that the asymptotic behavior does not depend on the configuration of magnetic fields. Remarkably, we analytically obtain the asymptotic values of the variance of polarization in the conventional model. When the helicity is small, we show that there appears the damped oscillating behavior in the early stage of evolution. Moreover, we see that the constraints on the axion coupling and the cosmological magnetic fields using polarization observations are affected by the magnetic field configuration. This is because the different transient behavior of polarization dynamics is caused by the different magnetic field configuration. Recently, [C. Wang and D. Lai, J. Cosmol. Astropart. We study the ultralight axion dark matter with mass around $10^{-22}$ eV in $f(R)$ gravity which might resolve the dark energy problem. In particular, we focus on the fact that the pressure of the axion field oscillating in time produces oscillations of gravitational potentials. We show that the oscillation of the gravitational potential is sensitive to the model of gravity. We investigate the axion inflation model derived by poly-instanton effects in type II superstring theories. Poly-instanton effects are instanton effects corrected by another instanton and it can generate the modulus-axion potential with the double exponential function. Although the axion has a period of small value, this potential can have a flat region because its derivatives are exponentially suppressed by non-perturbative effects. From the view point of the cosmic inflation, such potential is interesting. In this paper, we numerically study the possibilities for realizing the cosmic inflation. We assume cold dark matter to possess a small bulk-viscous pressure which typically attenuates the growth of inhomogeneities. Explicit calculations, based on Eckart's theory of dissipative processes, reveal that for viscous cold dark matter the usual Newtonian approximation for perturbation scales smaller than the Hubble scale is no longer valid. We advocate the use of a neo-Newtonian approach which consistently incorporates pressure effects into the fluid dynamics and correctly reproduces the general relativistic dynamics. This result is of interest for numerical simulations of nonlinear structure formation involving nonstandard dark-matter fluids. We obtain upper limits on the magnitude of the viscous pressure by requiring that relevant perturbation amplitudes should grow sufficiently to enter the nonlinear stage., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Kinematical and dynamical properties of a generic inhomogeneous cosmological model, spatially averaged with respect to free-falling (generalized fundamental) observers, are investigated for the matter model irrotational dust. Paraphrasing a previous Newtonian investigation, we present a relativistic generalization of a backreaction model based on volume-averaging the Relativistic Zeldovich Approximation. In this model we investigate the effect of kinematical backreaction on the evolution of cosmological parameters as they are defined in an averaged inhomogeneous cosmology, and we show that the backreaction model interpolates between orthogonal symmetry properties by covering subcases of the plane-symmetric solution, the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi solution and the Szekeres solution. We so obtain a powerful model that lays the foundations for quantitatively addressing curvature inhomogeneities as they would be interpreted as Dark Energy or Dark Matter in a quasi-Newtonian cosmology. The present model, having a limited architecture due to an assumed FLRW background, is nevertheless capable of replacing 1/4 of the needed amount for Dark Energy on domains of 200 Mpc in diameter for typical (one-sigma) fluctuations in a CDM initial power spectrum. However, the model is far from explaining Dark Energy on larger scales (spatially), where a 6% effect on 400 Mpc domains is identified that can be traced back to an on average negative intrinsic curvature today. One drawback of the quantitative results presented is the fact that the epoch when backreaction is effective on large scales and leads to volume acceleration lies in the future. An ultralight axion around $10^{-23}$ eV is known as a viable dark matter candidate. A distinguished feature of such a dark matter is the oscillating pressure which produces the oscillation of the gravitational potential with frequency in the nano-Hz range. Recently, Khmelnitsky and Rubakov pointed out that this time dependent potential induces the pulse arrival residual and could be observed by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) experiment. In this paper, we study the detectability of the oscillating pressure of the axion in the framework of $f(R)$ theory, and show that the amplitude of the gravitational potential can be enhanced or suppressed compared to that in Einstein's theory depending on the parameters of the $f(R)$ model and mass of the axion. We show how the relativistic matter and velocity power spectra behave in different gauges. We construct a new gauge where both spectra coincide with Newtonian theory on all scales. However, in this gauge there are geometric quantities present which do not exist in Newtonian theory, for example the local variation of the Hubble parameter. Comparing this quantity to second order Newtonian quantities, we find that Newtonian theory is inaccurate on scales larger than 10 Mpc. The generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model is the prototype of a unified model of dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM). It is characterized by equation-of-state (EoS) parameters $A$ and $\alpha$. We use a statistical analysis of the 2dFGRS data to constrain these parameters. In particular, we find that very small (close to zero) and very large values ($\alpha\gg 1$) of the equation-of-state parameter $\alpha$ are preferred. To test the validity of this type of unification of the dark sector we admit the existence of a separate DM component in addition to the Chaplygin gas and calculate the probability distribution for the fractional contributions of both components to the total energy density. This analysis favors a model for which the Universe is nearly entirely made up of the separate DM component with an almost negligible Chaplygin gas part. We present counter examples to the claim that the $\lambda \phi^4$ inflaton potential is excluded by recent cosmological data. Finding counter examples requires that the actually observed primordial fluctuations are generated at the onset of the slow-roll regime of inflation. This set up for the initial conditions is therefore different from the usual scenario of chaotic inflation where inflation starts long before the observed fluctuations are created. We study chromo-natural inflation in the axiverse. More precisely, we investigate natural inflation with two axions coupled with a SU(2) gauge field. Assuming a hierarchy between the coupling constants, we find that for certain initial conditions, conventional natural inflation commences and continues for tens of e-foldings, and subsequently chromo-natural inflation takes over from natural inflation. For these solutions, we expect that the predictions are in agreement with observations on CMB scales. Moreover, since chromo-natural inflation occurs in the latter part of the inflationary stage, chiral primordial gravitational waves are produced in the interesting frequency range higher than $10^{-10}$Hz, which might be detectable by future gravitational wave observations., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We study the dynamics of $SU(2)_L$ times $U(1)_Y$ electroweak gauge fields during and after Higgs inflation. In particular, we investigate configurations of the gauge fields during inflation and find the gauge fields remain topologically non-trivial. We also find that the gauge fields grow due to parametric resonances caused by oscillations of a Higgs field after inflation. We show that the Chern-Simons number also grows significantly. Interestingly, the parametric amplification gives rise to sizable magnetic fields after the inflation whose final amplitudes depend on the anisotropy survived during inflation., 16 pages, 8 figures
