We present an exhaustive study of Andreev crystals (ACs)—quasi-one-dimensional superconducting wires with a periodic distribution of magnetic regions. The exchange field in these regions is assumed to be much smaller than the Fermi energy. Hence, the transport through the magnetic region can be described within the quasiclassical approximation. In the first part of the paper, by assuming that the separation between the magnetic regions is larger than the coherence length, we derive the effective nearest-neighbor tight-binding equations for ACs with a helical magnetic configuration. The spectrum within the gap of the host superconductor shows a pair of energy-symmetric bands. By increasing the strength of the magnetic impurities in ferromagnetic ACs, these bands cross without interacting. However, in any other helical configuration, there is a value of the magnetic strength at which the bands touch each other, forming a Dirac point. Further increase of the magnetic strength leads to a system with an inverted gap. We study junctions between ACs with inverted spectrum and show that junctions between (anti)ferromagnetic ACs (always) never exhibit bound states at the interface. In the second part, we extend our analysis beyond the nearest-neighbor approximation by solving the Eilenberger equation for infinite ACs and junctions between semi-infinite ACs with collinear magnetization. From the obtained quasiclassical Green functions, we compute the local density of states and the local spin polarization in anti- and ferromagnetic ACs. Trigonal tellurium, a small-gap semiconductor with pronounced magneto-electric and magneto-optical responses, is among the simplest realizations of a chiral crystal. We have studied by spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy its unconventional electronic structure and unique spin texture. We identify Kramers-Weyl, composite, and accordionlike Weyl fermions, so far only predicted by theory, and show that the spin polarization is parallel to the wave vector along the lines in k space connecting high-symmetry points. Our results clarify the symmetries that enforce such spin texture in a chiral crystal, thus bringing new insight in the formation of a spin vectorial field more complex than the previously proposed hedgehog configuration. Our findings thus pave the way to a classification scheme for these exotic spin textures and their search in chiral crystals.

We theoretically investigate photoinduced phenomena induced by time-periodic driving fields in two-dimensional electron gases under perpendicular magnetic fields with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using perturbation theory, we provide analytical results for the Floquet-Landau energy spectrum appearing due to THz radiation. By employing the resulting photo-modulated states, we compute the dynamical evolution of the spin polarization function for an initially prepared coherent state. We find that the interplay of the magnetic field, Rashba spin-orbit interaction and THz radiation can lead to inversion of the spin polarization. The dynamics also induces fractional revivals and non-trivial beating patterns in the autocorrelation function due to interference of the photo-modulated quantum states. We also calculate the transverse photo-assisted conductivity in the linear response regime using Kubo formalism and analyze the impact of the radiation field and Rashba spin-orbit interaction. In the static limit, we find that our results reduce to well-known expressions of the conductivity in non-relativistic and quasi-relativistic (topological insulator surfaces) two-dimensional electron gas thoroughly described in the literature. The double-polarization observable $E$ and helicity-dependent cross sections $\sigma_{1/2}$, $\sigma_{3/2}$ have been measured for the photoproduction of $\pi^0$ pairs off quasi-free protons and neutrons at the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. A circularly polarized photon beam was produced by bremsstrahlung from longitudinally polarized electrons and impinged on a longitudinally polarized deuterated butanol target. The reaction products were detected with an almost $4\pi$ covering calorimeter. The results reveal for the first time the helicity- and isospin-dependent structure of the $\gamma N\rightarrow N\pi^0\pi^0$ reaction. They are compared to predictions from reaction models in view of nucleon resonance contributions and also to a refit of one model that predicted results for the proton and for the neutron target. We suggest a new spin orientation mechanism for localized electrons: $dynamic~electron~spin~polarization~provided~by~nuclear~spin~fluctuations$. The angular momentum for the electrons is gained from the nuclear spin system via the hyperfine interaction in a weak magnetic field. For this the sample is illuminated by an unpolarized light, which directly polarizes neither the electrons nor the nuclei. We predict, that for the electrons bound in localized excitons 100% spin polarization can be reached in longitudinal magnetic fields of a few millitesla. The proof of principle experiment is performed on momentum-indirect excitons in (In,Al)As/AlAs quantum dots, where in a magnetic field of 17 mT the electron spin polarization of 30% is measured., 6+9 pages, 3+9 figures

We develop a theory for spin transport and magnetization dynamics in a quantum dot spin valve, i.e., two magnetic reservoirs coupled to a quantum dot. Our theory is able to take into account effects of strong correlations. We demonstrate that, as a result of these strong correlations, the dot gate voltage enables control over the current-induced torques on the magnets and, in particular, enables voltage-controlled magnetic switching. The electrical resistance of the structure can be used to read out the magnetic state. Our model may be realized by a number of experimental systems, including magnetic scanning-tunneling microscope tips and artificial quantum dot systems.

We study a model of a $p$-$n$ junction in single-layer graphene in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and spin-orbit interactions. By solving the relevant quantum-mechanical problem for a potential step, we determine the exact spectrum of spin-resolved dispersive Landau levels. Close to zero energy, we find a pair of linearly dispersing zero modes, which possess a wave-vector-dependent spin polarization and can be regarded as quantum analogous of spinful snake states. We show that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, in particular, produces a wave vector shift between the dispersions of these modes with observable interference effects. These effects can in principle provide a way to detect the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction and measure its strength. Our results suggest that a graphene $p$-$n$ junction in the presence of strong spin-orbit interaction could be used as a building block in a spin field-effect transistor., 11 pages with 6 figures

On-demand spin orientation with long polarized lifetime and easily detectable signal is an ultimate goal for spintronics. However, there still exists a trade-off between controllability and stability of spin polarization, awaiting a significant breakthrough. Here, we demonstrate switchable optomagnet effects in (Fe$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$, from which we can obtain tunable magnetization, spanning from -40$\%$ to 40$\%$ of a saturated magnetization that is created from zero magnetization in the antiferromagnetic state without magnetic fields. It is accomplishable via utilizing circularly-polarized laser pulses to excite spin-flip transitions in polar antiferromagnets that have no spin canting, traditionally hard to control without very strong magnetic fields. The spin controllability in (Fe$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ originates from its polar structure that breaks the crystal inversion symmetry, allowing distinct on-site $d$-$d$ transitions for selective spin flip. By chemical doping, we exploit the phase competition between antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic states to enhance and stabilize the optomagnet effects, which result in long-lived photoinduced Kerr rotations. The present study, creating switchable giant optomagnet effects in polar antiferromagnets, sketches a new blueprint for the function of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

We demonstrate that the hybrid structures consisting of a superconducting layer with an adjacent spin-textured ferromagnet demonstrate the variety of equilibrium magnetoelectric effects originating from coupling between the conduction electron spin and superconducting current. By deriving and solving the generalized Usadel equation which takes into account the spin-filtering effect we find that a supercurrent generates spin polarization in the superconducting film which is non-coplanar with the local ferromagnetic moment. The inverse magnetoelectric effect in such structures is shown to result in the spontaneous phase difference across the magnetic topological defects such as a domain wall and helical spin texture. We study Bi-adsorbed In atomic chains on Si(111) in order to design a one-dimensional (1D) Rashba system using first-principles calculations. From the band dispersions and spin textures, we find that this system shows 1D giant Rashba splittings. The Rashba parameters of several structures in this system are comparable with other Rashba systems. Depending on the adsorption structure, this system also shows remarkable features such as a large out-of-plane spin polarization, the reversal of spin polarization in the Rashba bands, and a metal-insulator transition. We propose a mechanism to generate a nondissipative spin current by the gap opening due to an avoided crossing of Rashba bands. This mechanism is suitable for spintronic applications without requiring an external magnetic field.

We propose a spin filter device based on the interplay of a modulated spin-orbit interaction and a uniform external magnetic field acting on a quantum wire. Half-metal phases, where electrons with only a selected spin polarization exhibit ballistic conductance, can be tuned by varying the magnetic field. These half-metal phases are proven to be robust against electron-electron repulsive interactions. We demonstrate optical spin polarization of the neutrally-charged silicon-vacancy defect in diamond ($\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$), an $S=1$ defect which emits with a zero-phonon line at 946 nm. The spin polarization is found to be most efficient under resonant excitation, but non-zero at below-resonant energies. We measure an ensemble spin coherence time $T_2>100~\mathrm{��s}$ at low-temperature, and a spin relaxation limit of $T_1>25~\mathrm{s}$. Optical spin state initialization around 946 nm allows independent initialization of $\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$ and $\mathrm{NV^{-}}$ within the same optically-addressed volume, and $\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$ emits within the telecoms downconversion band to 1550 nm: when combined with its high Debye-Waller factor, our initial results suggest that $\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$ is a promising candidate for a long-range quantum communication technology.

We investigate the possible existence of spin polarization and color superconductivity in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with a tensor-type interaction at finite density and temperature. The thermodynamic potential is calculated by the functional integral method. Numerical results indicate that at low temperature and quark chemical potential the chiral condensed phase exists, and at intermediate chemical potential the color superconducting phase appears. In addition, depending on the magnitude of the tensor coupling, at large chemical potential and low temperature, a color superconducting phase and a spin polarized phase may coexist while at intermediate temperatures only the spin polarized phase occurs., 10 pages, 5 figures

We theoretically consider the spin-wave mode- and wavelength-dependent enhancement of the Gilbert damping in magnetic insulator–normal metal bilayers due to spin pumping as well as the enhancement's relation to direct and alternating inverse spin Hall voltages in the normal metal. In the long-wavelength limit, including long-range dipole interactions, the ratio of the enhancement for transverse volume modes to that of the macrospin mode is equal to two. With an out-of-plane magnetization, this ratio decreases with both an increasing surface anisotropic energy and mode number. If the surface anisotropy induces a surface state, the enhancement can be an order of magnitude larger than for the macrospin. With an in-plane magnetization, the induced dissipation enhancement can be understood by mapping the anisotropy parameter to the out-of-plane case with anisotropy. For shorter wavelengths, we compute the enhancement numerically and find good agreement with the analytical results in the applicable limits. We also compute the induced direct- and alternating-current inverse spin Hall voltages and relate these to the magnetic energy stored in the ferromagnet. Because the magnitude of the direct spin Hall voltage is a measure of spin dissipation, it is directly proportional to the enhancement of Gilbert damping. The alternating spin Hall voltage exhibits a similar in-plane wave-number dependence, and we demonstrate that it is greatest for surface-localized modes. © 2017 American Physical Society

We consider the Josephson effect through a thin spin-orbit coupled layer in the presence of an exchange field, and discover a set of supercurrent vortices appearing in the system which can be controllably moved around in the system by varying either the direction of the exchange field, its strength, or the spin-orbit coupling magnitude via a gate voltage. We refer to this phenomenon as a supercurrent vortex pinball effect and show that its origin is the spin polarization of the triplet Cooper pairs induced in the system. The supercurrent vortices thus arise from what resembles a Cooper pair-induced inverse Edelstein effect. Our results highlight the importance of considering higher-dimensional models for superconducting hybrid structures which unveils novel phenomena that are hidden in commonly used effective 1D models., 5 pages, 5 figures

Bistability in magnetism has been extensively used, in particular to store information. Here we propose an alternative route by using tetrastable magnetic domains. Using numerical and analytical calculations we show that a spin chain with a canting angle of {\pi}/4 possesses four energy-equivalent states. We discuss the static properties of such chain such as the profile and the energy of the domain walls as they govern the relaxation of the magnetization. The realisation of such spin chain could enable the encoding of the information on four bits which is a potential alternative toward the increase of storage density., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, supplementary material available

The spin-orbit interaction was found to split the cyclotron resonance of heavy holes confined in high-mobility, compressively strained germanium quantum wells. The interference between coherent spin-split cyclotron resonances was tracked on picosecond time scales using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Analysis in the time domain, or using a time-frequency decomposition based on the Gabor-Morlet wavelet, was necessary when the difference between cyclotron frequencies was comparable to the linewidth. The cubic Rashba spin-orbit coefficient β was determined via two methods: (i) the magnetic-field dependence of the cyclotron frequencies, and (ii) the spin-resolved subband densities. An enhanced β and spin polarization was created by tailoring the strain to enhance the spin-orbit interaction. The amplitude modulation of the narrow, interfering cyclotron resonances is a signature of spin coherences persisting for more than 10 ps.

We analyze the effect known as "spin current swapping" (SCS) due to electron-impurity scattering in a uniform spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas. In this effect a primary spin current $J_i^a$ (lower index for spatial direction, upper index for spin direction) generates a secondary spin current $J_a^i$ if $i \neq a$, or $J_j^j$, with $j\ne i$, if $i= a$. Contrary to naive expectation, the homogeneous spin current associated with the uniform drift of the spin polarization in the electron gas does not generate a swapped spin current by the SCS mechanism. Nevertheless, a swapped spin current will be generated, if a magnetic field is present, by a completely different mechanism, namely, the precession of the spin Hall spin current in the magnetic field. We refer to this second mechanism as Hanle spin Hall effect, and we notice that it can be observed in an experiment in which a homogeneous drift current is passed through a uniformly magnetized electron gas. In contrast to this, we show that an unambiguous observation of SCS requires inhomogeneous spin currents, such as those that are associated with spin diffusion in a metal, and no magnetic field. We study the effect of a strong magnetic field on the proton and neutron spin polarization and magnetic susceptibility of asymmetric nuclear matter within a relativistic mean-field approach. It is shown that magnetic fields $B \sim 10^{16} - 10^{17}$ G have already noticeable effects on the range of densities of interest for the study of the crust of a neutron star. Although the proton susceptibility is larger for weaker fields, the neutron susceptibility becomes of the same order or even larger for small proton fractions and subsaturation densities for $B > 10^{16}$ G. Spin ice is a frustrated magnetic system that at low temperatures exhibits a Coulomb phase, a classical spin liquid with topological order and deconfined excitations. This work establishes the presence of a Coulomb phase with coexisting ferromagnetic order in a microscopic model of classical spin ice subject to uniaxial lattice distortion. General theoretical arguments are presented for the presence of such a phase, and its existence is confirmed using Monte Carlo results. This example is used to illustrate generic properties of spin liquids with magnetic order, including deconfinement of monopoles, signatures in the neutron-scattering structure factor, and critical behavior at phase transitions. An analogous phase, a superfluid with spontaneously broken particle-hole symmetry, is demonstrated in a model of hard-core lattice bosons, related to spin ice through the quantum-classical correspondence., Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures; v2: new Fig. 9 showing effective potential between monopoles

We discuss a platform for the synthetic realization of key physical properties of helical Tomonaga Luttinger liquids (HTLLs) with ultracold fermionic atoms in one-dimensional optical lattices. The HTLL is a strongly correlated metallic state where spin polarization and propagation direction of the itinerant particles are locked to each other. We propose an unconventional one-dimensional Fermi-Hubbard model which, at quarter filling, resembles the HTLL in the long wavelength limit, as we demonstrate with a combination of analytical (bosonization) and numerical (density matrix renormalization group) methods. An experimentally feasible scheme is provided for the realization of this model with ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices. Finally, we discuss how the robustness of the HTLL against back-scattering and imperfections, well known from its realization at the edge of two-dimensional topological insulators, is reflected in the synthetic one-dimensional scenario proposed here.

Thanks to the recent experimental realization and control of artificial gauge fields, spin-orbit (SO) couplings are witnessing an ever increasing interest in the field of cold atoms. However, predicting their effect on spin polarization and energetic properties of interacting systems is a major challenge, due to the complex interplay between spin and position dynamics. In this work we exploit the diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm to compute energetic and polarization properties of a three-dimensional repulsive Fermi gas in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We find that SO effects tend to contrast the spin alignment induced by the exchange interaction, slightly shifting the onset of the Stoner instability towards larger values of the scattering length. In addition, polarization and energy properties of the system can be tuned trough a combined control of the repulsive interaction and Rashba coupling.

We study the effect of Coulomb interactions on the low energy band structure of single-layer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors using an effective low energy model. We show how a large conduction band spin splitting and a spin dependent Fermi velocity are generated in MoS$_2$, as a consequence of the difference between the gaps of the two spin projections induced by the spin-orbit interaction. The conduction band and Fermi velocity spin splittings found are in agreement with the optical absorption energies of the excitonic peaks A, B measured in the experiments., Revised version, as published in PRB

Among the factors determining the quantum coherence of the spin in molecular magnets is the presence and the nature of nuclear spins in the molecule. We have explored modifying the nuclear spin environment in Cr$_7$Ni-based molecular nanomagnets by replacing hydrogen atoms with deuterium or the halogen atoms, fluorine or chlorine. We find that the spin coherence, studied at low temperatures by pulsed electron spin resonance, is modified by a range of factors, including nuclear spin and magnetic moment, changes in dynamics owing to nuclear mass, and molecular morphology changes., 8 pages, 5 figures, including supplemental material

We have performed point contact Andreev reflection measurements with a view to study the correlation between measured spin polarization and the interface scattering parameter Z extracted from fits of the modified Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model to the conductance-voltage curves of superconductor/ferromagnet point contacts. A simple model describing spin-flip scattering in the interface region identifies (formula presented) as the effective scattering parameter and predicts that the spin polarization decays exponentially with (formula presented) in agreement with experimental data.

This paper describes a time-marking system that enables a measurement of the in-plane (horizontal) polarization of a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich. The clock time of each polarimeter event is used to unfold the 120-kHz spin precession and assign events to bins according to the direction of the horizontal polarization. After accumulation for one or more seconds, the down-up scattering asymmetry can be calculated for each direction and matched to a sinusoidal function whose magnitude is proportional to the horizontal polarization. This requires prior knowledge of the spin tune or polarization precession rate. An initial estimate is refined by re-sorting the events as the spin tune is adjusted across a narrow range and searching for the maximum polarization magnitude. The result is biased toward polarization values that are too large, in part because of statistical fluctuations but also because sinusoidal fits to even random data will produce sizeable magnitudes when the phase is left free to vary. An analysis procedure is described that matches the time dependence of the horizontal polarization to templates based on emittance-driven polarization loss while correcting for the positive bias. This information will be used to study ways to extend the horizontal polarization lifetime by correcting spin tune spread using ring sextupole fields and thereby to support the feasibility of searching for an intrinsic electric dipole moment using polarized beams in a storage ring. Ballistic spin resonance was experimentally observed in a quasi-one-dimensional wire by Frolov et al. [Nature (London) 458, 868 (2009)]. The spin resonance was generated by a combination of an external static magnetic field and the oscillating effective spin-orbit magnetic field due to periodic bouncings of the electrons off the boundaries of a narrow channel. An increase of the D'yakonov-Perel spin relaxation rate was observed when the frequency of the spin-orbit field matched that of the Larmor precession frequency around the external magnetic field. Here we develop a model to account for the D'yakonov-Perel mechanism in multisubband quantum wires with both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. Considering elastic spin-conserving impurity scatterings in the time-evolution operator (Heisenberg representation), we extract the spin relaxation time by evaluating the time-dependent average of the spin operators. The magnetic field dependence of the nonlocal voltage, which is related to the spin relaxation time behavior, shows a wide plateau, in agreement with the experimental observation. This plateau arises due to injection in higher subbands and small-angle scattering. In this quantum mechanical approach, the spin resonance occurs near the spin-orbit induced energy anticrossings of the quantum wire subbands with opposite spins. We also predict anomalous dips in the spin relaxation time as a function of the magnetic field in systems with strong spin-orbit couplings., 8 pages, 4 figures

We study the optically induced spin polarization, spin dephasing, and diffusion in several high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems, which are embedded in GaAs quantum wells grown on (110)-oriented substrates. The experimental techniques comprise a two-beam magneto-optical spectroscopy system and polarization-resolved photoluminescence. Under weak excitation conditions at liquid-helium temperatures, we observe spin lifetimes above 100 ns in one of our samples, which are reduced with increasing excitation density due to additional, hole-mediated, spin dephasing. The spin dynamic is strongly influenced by the carrier density and the ionization of remote donors, which can be controlled by temperature and above-barrier illumination. The absolute value of the average electron spin polarization in the samples is directly observable in the circular polarization of photoluminescence collected under circularly polarized excitation and reaches values of about 5%. Spin diffusion is studied by varying the distance between pump and probe beams in microspectroscopy experiments. We propose a model to account for the observed ESR-like signal at the Larmor frequency in the current noise scanning tunnel microscope (STM) experiments identifying spin centers on various substrates. The theoretical understanding of this phenomenon, which allows for single spin detection on surfaces at room temperature, is not settled for the experimentally relevant case that the tip and substrate are not spin polarized. Our model is based on a direct tip-substrate tunneling in parallel with a current flowing via the spin states. We find a sharp signal at the Larmor frequency even at high temperatures, in good agreement with experimental data. We also evaluate the noise in presence of an ac field near resonance and predict splitting of the signal into a Mollow triplet. Fil: Caso, Alvaro. The prospect of combining the dissipationless nature of superconducting currents with the spin-polarization of magnetic materials is interesting with respect to exploring superconducting analogues of topics in spintronics. In order to accomplish this aim, it is pivotal to understand how spin-supercurrents interact dynamically with magnetization textures. We investigate the appearance of a spin-supercurrent and the resulting magnetization dynamics in a textured magnetic Josephson current by using three experimentally relevant models: i) a S/F/S junction with spin-active interfaces, ii) a S/F1/F2/F3/S Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic trilayer, and iii) a Josephson junction containing a domain wall. In all of these cases, the supercurrent is spin-polarized and exerts a spin-transfer torque on the ferromagnetic interlayers which causes magnetization dynamics. Using a scattering matrix formalism in the clean limit, we compute the Andreev-bound states and free energy of the system which is used to solve the Landau-Lifshiftz-Gilbert equation. We compute both how the inhomogeneous magnetism influences the phase-dependence of the charge supercurrent as well as the magnetization dynamics caused by the spin-supercurrent. Using a realistic experimental parameter set, we find that the supercurrent can induce magnetization switching that is controlled by the superconducting phase difference. Moreover, we demonstrate that the combined effect of chiral spin symmetry breaking and interface scattering causes the system to act as a phase battery that may supply any superconducting phase difference phi in the ground state. Such a phi junction is accompanied by an anomalous supercurrent appearing even at zero phase difference, and we demonstrate that the flow direction of this current is controlled by the chirality of the magnetization configuration., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. The spin-dependent electron resonant tunneling through magnetically modulated quantum structures has been investigated with and without an external electric field. The spin polarization is found to be strongly dependent on the magnetic configuration, the applied bias, the incident electron energy, and the incident wave vector. It is shown that an unpolarized beam of conducting electrons can be strongly polarized for an electron tunneling through magnetic-barrier structures, which is an arrangement with unidentical magnetic barriers and wells. The external electric field greatly changes the spin polarization of electrons for small electronic energies, where the electron-spin polarization exhibits considerable wave-vector-dependent features.

We investigated electron spin relaxation time ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$ in $\mathrm{GaAs}/\mathrm{AlGaAs}$ (110) quantum wells (QWs), in which a predominant spin scattering mechanism [D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) mechanism] for conventional (100) QWs is substantially suppressed; ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$ in (110) QWs was of nanosecond order at room temperature, more than an order of magnitude longer than that of the (100) counterpart. The mechanism responsible for the spin relaxation was examined by studying the quantized energy, electron mobility, and temperature dependences of ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{s}$. The results suggest that in the absence of DP interaction, electron-hole exchange interaction limits ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{\mathrm{s}}$ in a wide temperature range ( $\ensuremath{\sim}0--300\mathrm{K}$).

Spin-resolved photoemission spectra of 6-, 9-, and 13-eV satellites of the ferromagnetic Ni valence band are reported. The spin polarization of the valence-band satellites and their photon energy dependence are interpreted by the multiplet configuration of ${3\mathrm{d}}^{8}$ and ${3\mathrm{d}}^{7}$ final states. This implies the localization of a photoexcited final state reflecting the strong electron correlation in Ni.

The competition between on-site Coulomb repulsion and Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) is studied on two-leg ladders by numerical techniques. By studying persistent currents in closed rings by exact diagonalization, it is found that the contribution to the current due to the RSOC V_{SO}, for a fixed value of the Hubbard repulsion U reaches a maximum at intermediate values of V_{SO}. By increasing the repulsive Hubbard coupling U, this spin-flipping current is suppressed and eventually it becomes opposite to the spin-conserving current. The main result is that the spin accumulation defined as the relative spin polarization between the two legs of the ladder is enhanced by U. Similar results for this Hubbard-Rashba model are observed for a completely different setup in which two halves of the ladders are connected to a voltage bias and the ensuing time-dependent regime is studied by the density matrix-renormalization group technique. It is also interesting a combined effect between V_{SO} and U leading to a strong enhancement of antiferromagnetic order which in turn may explain the observed behavior of the spin-flipping current. In the low-temperature regime where the thermal polarization P is of order unity and spin-lattice relaxation is “frozen out,” resonator-induced relaxation can be used to polarize a nuclear-spin sample for optimal detection sensitivity. We characterize the potential of resonator-induced polarization for enhancing the sensitivity of nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectroscopy. The sensitivities of two detection schemes are compared, one involving detection of a polarized sample dipole and the other involving detection of spin-noise correlations in an unpolarized sample. In the case where the dominant noise source is instrument noise associated with resonator fluctuations and with detection of the mechanical motion, a simple criterion can be used to compare the two schemes. Polarizing the sample improves sensitivity when P is larger than the signal-to-noise ratio for detection of a fully-polarized spin during a single transient. Even if the instrument noise is decreased to a level near the quantum-mechanical limit, it is larger than spin noise for unpolarized samples containing up to a few tens of nuclei. Under these conditions, spin polarization of order unity would enhance spectroscopic detection sensitivity by an order of magnitude or more. In the limiting case where signal decay is due to resonator-induced dissipation during ideal spin locking, and where resonator fluctuations are the noise source, the only parameter of the spin-resonator system that affects the sensitivity per spin is the ratio of frequency to temperature. A balance between the coupling strength, the noise power, and the signal lifetime causes the cancellation of other parameters from the sensitivity formula. Partial cancellation of parameters, associated with a balance between the same three quantities, occurs more generally when the resonator is both the dominant noise source and the dominant source of signal decay. An intrinsic sensitivity limit exists for resonant detection of coherent spin evolution, due to the fact that the detector causes signal decay by enhancing the spins' spontaneous emission. For a single-spin sample, the quantum-limited signal-to-noise ratio for resonant detection is 1/3. In contrast to the sensitivity, the time required for sample polarization between transients depends strongly on resonator parameters. We discuss resonator design and show that for a torsional resonator, the coupling is optimal when the resonator's magnetization remains aligned with the applied field during the mechanical oscillations.

We investigate the sensitivity of a recently proposed method for precision measurement [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 140502 (2011)], focusing on an implementation based on solid-state spin systems. The scheme amplifies a quantum sensor response to weak external fields by exploiting its coupling to spin impurities in the environment. We analyze the limits to the sensitivity due to decoherence and propose dynamical decoupling schemes to increase the spin coherence time. The sensitivity is also limited by the environment spin polarization; therefore we discuss strategies to polarize the environment spins and present a method to extend the scheme to the case of zero polarization. The coherence time and polarization determine a figure of merit for the environment's ability to enhance the sensitivity compared to echo-based sensing schemes. This figure of merit can be used to engineer optimized samples for high-sensitivity nanoscale magnetic sensing, such as diamond nanocrystals with controlled impurity density., 9 pages, 6 figures

We report on the observation of quantum interference of the emission from two separate nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. Taking advantage of optically induced spin polarization in combination with polarization filtering, we isolate a single transition within the zero-phonon line of the non-resonantly excited NV centers. The time-resolved two-photon interference contrast of this filtered emission reaches 66%. Furthermore, we observe quantum interference from dissimilar NV centers tuned into resonance through the dc Stark effect. These results pave the way towards measurement-based entanglement between remote NV centers and the realization of quantum networks with solid-state spins.

In the presence of a scattering potential, electron transport in a quantum wire is known to be dramatically modified by backward scattering and unaffected by forward scattering processes. We show that the scenario is quite different in Quantum Spin Hall effect edge states coupled at a constriction. The helical nature of these states leads to the appearance of a forward scattering spin channel that is absent in other Luttinger liquid realizations. Suitably applied ac gate voltages can thus operate on the spin of electrons tunneling across the constriction, and induce in the dc tunneling current a cusp pattern that represents the signature of the edge state electronic interaction., Comment: 4 pages, 2 Figures

We investigate the interplay between ferromagnetic and superconducting order at the edge of a quantum spin Hall insulator. Using complementary analytical and self-consistent numerical approaches, we study a ferromagnetic Josephson junction and show how the direct coupling between magnetism and the superconducting U(1) phase gives rise to several unusual phenomena which distinguishes the present system from its non-topological equivalent. In particular, we demonstrate how the anomalous current-phase relation triggers supercurrent-induced magnetization dynamics and also study the spatial localization of the Majorana fermions appearing in the junction., Comment: 4+ pages, 4 figures. A qualitative analysis for a model one-dimensional system is presented, as well as ab initio calculations for (111) surfaces of a number of fcc metals. Anomalous spin Hall effects that belong to the intrinsic type in Dresselhaus (110) quantum wells are discussed. For the out-of-plane spin component, antisymmetric current-induced spin polarization induces opposite spin Hall accumulation, even though there is no spin-orbit force due to Dresselhaus (110) coupling. A surprising feature of this spin Hall induction is that the spin accumulation sign does not change upon bias reversal. Contribution to the spin Hall accumulation from the spin Hall induction and the spin deviation due to intrinsic spin-orbit force as well as extrinsic spin scattering, can be straightforwardly distinguished simply by reversing the bias. For the inplane component, inclusion of a weak Rashba coupling leads to a new type of $S_y$ intrinsic spin Hall effect solely due to spin-orbit-force-driven spin separation., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We compute the shift in the frequency of the spin resonance in a solid that rotates in the field of a circularly polarized electromagnetic wave. Electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, and ferromagnetic resonance are considered. We show that contrary to the case of the rotating LC circuit, the shift in the frequency of the spin resonance has strong dependence on the symmetry of the receiver. The shift due to rotation occurs only when rotational symmetry is broken by the anisotropy of the gyromagnetic tensor, by the shape of the body, or by magnetocrystalline anisotropy. General expressions for the resonance frequency and power absorption are derived and implications for experiment are discussed., 8 pages, 4 figures

Spin accumulation is generated by injecting an unpolarized charge current into a channel of GaAs two-dimensional electron gas subject to an in-plane magnetic field, then measured in a nonlocal geometry. Unlike previous measurements that have used spin-polarized nanostructures, here the spin accumulation arises simply from the difference in bulk conductivities for spin-up and spin-down carriers. Comparison to a diffusive model that includes spin subband splitting in magnetic field suggests a significantly enhanced electron spin susceptibility in the two-dimensional electron gas.

We propose theoretically a spin memory effect in quantum dots and single molecules with strong electron-vibron interaction and coupled to ferromagnetic leads. The controlled electrical switching between spin states is achieved due to an interplay between Franck-Condon blockade of electron transport at low voltages and spin-dependent tunneling at high voltages. Spin lifetimes, currents, and spin polarizations are calculated as a function of the bias voltage by the master-equation method. We further propose to use a third ferromagnetic tunneling contact to probe and readout the spin state.

Spin Hall effects intermix spin and charge currents even in nonmagnetic materials and, therefore, ultimately may allow the use of spin transport without the need for ferromagnets. We show how spin Hall effects can be quantified by integrating permalloy/normal metal (N) bilayers into a coplanar waveguide. A dc spin current in N can be generated by spin pumping in a controllable way by ferromagnetic resonance. The transverse dc voltage detected along the permalloy/N has contributions from both the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and the spin Hall effect, which can be distinguished by their symmetries. We developed a theory that accounts for both. In this way, we determine the spin Hall angle quantitatively for Pt, Au and Mo. This approach can readily be adapted to any conducting material with even very small spin Hall angles., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report on the observation of the circular photogalvanic effect in Si-metal-oxide-semiconductor fieldeffect transistors with inversion channel excited by terahertz radiation. We demonstrate that in spite of the fact that the photocurrent is caused by transfer of the photon angular momentum to free carriers, it is not due to spin orientation but has a pure orbital origin. It results from the quantum interference of different pathways contributing to the free-carrier absorption of monochromatic radiation. The spin of electrons and holes in solid-state systems is an intensively studied quantum mechanical property showing a large variety of interesting physical phenomena. One of the most frequently used and powerful methods of generation and investigation of spin polarization is optical orientation with circularly polarized light. 1 Besides purely optical phenomena such as circularly polarized photoluminescence, the optical generation of an unbalanced spin distribution in a semiconductor may lead to helicity-dependent photocurrents, e.g., circular photogalvanic effect CPGE. 2‐4 CPGE current is excited only by light of nonzero helicity and reverses its direction upon switching the sign of circular polarization. So far, the CPGE has only been detected in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and described by microscopic mechanisms based on spin-related processes. 2‐4 Here we report on the observation of the CPGE caused by absorption of terahertz radiation in Si-metal-oxidesemiconductor field-effect transistors Si-MOSFETs. The experimental demonstration of the existence of a helicitysensitive photocurrent in Si-based structures is of particular interest. Silicon is characterized by a vanishingly small spinorbit coupling which makes spin-related mechanisms of the CPGE ineffective and, therefore, cannot account for the observed helicity-dependent photocurrent. Thus, an access in explaining the CPGE is required, involving mechanisms of pure orbital spin-unrelated origin. Here, we show that the CPGE in our structures is due to quantum interference of different pathways contributing to monochromatic radiation absorption. This effect has been predicted theoretically 5 see also Refs. 6 and 7 but not observed so far. Quantum interference plays an important role in various transport and optical phenomena. It has also been shown that it can induce photocurrents. Here, however, in contrast to the well-known photocurrents caused by quantum interference of one- and two-photon absorption processes in two color light, 8‐11 the photocurrent is due to quantum interference in the elementary one-photon absorption process.

We study the bias-dependent spin-transfer torque in magnetic tunnel junctions in the Stoner model by scattering theory. We show that the in-plane (Slonczewski type) torque vanishes and subsequently reverses its direction when the bias voltage becomes larger or the barrier wider than material and device-dependent critical values. We are able to reproduce the magnitude and the bias dependence of measured in-plane and out-of-plane torques using realistic parameters. The condition for the vanishing torque is summarized by a phase diagram depending on the applied bias and barrier width, which is explained in terms of an interface spin polarization and the electron focusing by the barrier. Quantum size effects in the spin-transfer torque are predicted as a function of the thickness of a normal metal layer inserted between the ferromagnet and tunnel barrier., 10 pages, 10 figures. to be published on Physical Review B

We investigate the effect of many-body electronic correlations on spin Coulomb drag (SCD) beyond the random phase approximation (RPA). We make use of the fully spin-resolved static and dynamical many-body local field factors of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) to improve the calculations of the particle-hole and plasmon-mediated contributions to the SCD. Also, we incorporate in our calculations the transverse thickness of the quantum well in which the 2DEG resides. In contrast to the conventional charge Coulomb drag, in the SCD the effect of layer thickness is significant even at relatively high temperature and densities. The final outcome of our study is that the enhancement of the spin drag caused by many-body local field effects largely compensates the reduction of the effect coming from the finite well thickness, restoring good agreement with the experimental observations by C.P. Weber et al., Nature 437 (2005) 1330.

PUBLISHED, Magnetic units attached to low-dimensional metallic nanowires are known to interact via the conduction electrons of the wire leading to preferential alignment directions of the respective magnetic moments. In addition to this so-called static interaction, here we show that a very long-ranged interaction arises when these units are allowed to precess. This dynamic version of the magnetic interaction governs the spin dynamics of the magnetic moments. We are able to relate this interaction to the spin excitation spectrum of the system in which we establish a clear correspondence between the precession relaxation time and the features of the spin susceptibility. We show that the relaxation time is predominantly determined by the availability of noncoherent Stoner modes, a process analogous to Landau damping of plasmons in the electron gas. Contrary to expectations, our results indicate that the range of this interaction is robust against the introduction of disorder. Furthermore, we show that the interaction range is frequency dependent suggesting that it may be tunable by an adequate choice of excitation frequencies.
